Cider from Hardanger
From fruit comes cider. “Cider from Hardanger” is a protected geographical designation in line with Calvados and Champagne. There are 19 different cider producers in Hardanger, all with their own unique product based on their apples and local history.
Our kiosk has a variety of ciders available for purchase to enjoy on board the vessel, but it is also possible to book cider tasting at the different farms along the fjord.
Explore the fjord villages
Except for being involved in fruit and cider production, all the towns and villages connected with the fjord cruise are unique. Eidfjord is the innermost port, gateway to Hardangervidda National Park, and where you can visit the massive Vøringsfossen waterfall. Ulvik is a charming small village where you find the fruit & cider route consisting of three farms which you can visit to taste and buy their products.
At Lofthus you find the historic Ullensvang Hotel with spa and a magnificent pool stretching from inside to outside. For an authentic cultural and historical experience, stop in Aga and visit Agatunet museum – one of the oldest cluster farms in Europe, dating back to 1220. Nå are, just as the other villages, places where you can visit local cider producers. Just remember to book your visit prior to arrival.
In Tyssedal, you can visit the interesting Musem of Hydropower and Industry to learn about the origin of industrial Norway, and how Odda and Tyssedal went from being a tourist destination to pioneering in hydropower and industry. Odda is the largest town by the fjord, with several cafés and restaurants to choose between, a nice pedestrian street with various shops, and good opportunities to learn more about the importance of hydro power and industry to the region.

Fjord sightseeing cruise in Hardanger
Take one of the world’s most beautiful boat trips – along Hardangerfjord, past the idyllic villages situated on both sides. Here, you can experience the landscape that inspired Norway’s National Romantic painters.
The crew on the Aurora of The Fjords sees the passengers off! Photo: Øystein Haara
Known locally as “the cider boat”, the journey takes you to the area’s famous orchards, where you can combine cider sampling with an exploration of Hardangerfjord’s natural and cultural heritage – an experience you will find nowhere but here in Hardangerfjord. Cider sampling is Norway’s answer to wine tasting and has quickly become extremely popular. Local apple growers nurture their crops with care and patience, and open their doors to visitors who want to sample their farm-produced wares. The landscape along the fjord is breathtaking. This year the Aurora of The Fjords is the vessel that will sail back and forth along Hardangerfjord from 15 May until 3 September. You are at liberty to take this cruise as a one-way or round trip.
The cider boat’s itinerary
This is a fjord cruise with opportunities for exploration and cider tasting along the way. Every morning during the season, the boat departs from Eidfjord at 9.30 am. On its way towards the town of Odda, the Aurora of The Fjords stops off at Ulvik, Lofthus, Aga, Nå and Tyssedal. All of these charming fjordside places have their own story to tell. The entire journey to Odda takes 3 hours and 15 minutes.
The cider boat also has two departures from Lofthus later every day: one is a fjord cruise that ends at the picturesque hamlet of Nå, and the other goes all the way in to Odda.
From Odda, the Aurora of The Fjords has two daily departures sailing down the fjord, with the last departure going all the way to Eidfjord.
You can choose to take this amazing fjord cruise in Hardanger as a purely sightseeing excursion, with a cider tasting session on board, as a transport leg on your way to another destination, or as a hop-on hop-off combination of cider tasting and visits to the cider producers along the way. Find out more about departure times and possible excursions here .
Places to visit along the way
The cider boat departs from the fjordside village of Eidfjord, which acts as a hub for exploring some of Norway’s most beautiful natural features: the Hardanger plateau, the Hardangerjøkulen glacier, the precipitous Måbødalen valley, the Vøringsfossen waterfall, the River Eio and Hardangerfjord itself. The cider boat’s first stop is Ulvik, the jewel that lies at the very head of the eponymous fjord arm Ulvikafjord. Tourists have been coming here for more than 150 years in search of spectacular landscapes and cultural experiences. Ulvik is home to Norway’s only fruit and cider trail, as well as a wealth of other things to see and do.
The cruise continues towards the Hardanger region’s key fruit-growing area, the village of Lofthus. Along the way, the Aurora of The Fjords passes beneath the Hardanger Bridge. It is a fabulous sight. At almost 1,400 m in length, the longest in Norway, its main span is 30 m longer than San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.
Idyllic Loftshus has been the centre of Norway’s fruit growing for hundreds of years – in fact, ever since a group of Cistercian monks settled in the area in the 13th century. It is therefore the perfect place to get to know the world-famous Hardanger cider.
We head towards Odda
As our fjord sightseeing cruise continues in the direction of Odda, we pass through the characteristic Hardanger landscape, with lush slopes rising from the mighty fjord. The cider boat cruises past Oksen, a mountain peak and landmark, where hikers can experience panoramic views of Hardangerfjord and its many side arms. This countryside is some of the most beautiful the west of Norway has to offer.
The boat now passes straight between Utnefjord, Sørfjord and Eidfjord, which all branch off Norway’s second longest fjord, Hardangerfjord. Stretching for a total of 179 km, Hardangerfjord starts as a ragged fringe of inlets and islands in a wide band from Haugesund to Bergen on the Atlantic coast, then gradually narrows as it carves its way towards Norway’s mountainous interior. The natural and cultural heritage you encounter here has enchanted visitors since the dawn of time, and the beautiful fjords are considered by many to be the very essence of Norway – the world’s foremost fjord landscape.
Aga and Nå on the left-hand side
The next stops on our gorgeous fjord sightseeing cruise in Hardanger are the hamlets of Aga and Nå. Both are famed for their orchards and cider production. In spring, they are encircled by row upon row of pink and white blossoming fruit trees. Add in the snow-clad mountain tops and the romantic picture is complete. As autumn approaches, you can taste the fruits of the summer. At Aga, you can also visit Agatun, the only surviving example of a traditional west Norwegian farmstead cluster, whose oldest building dates back to the early 1200s.
The Aurora of the Fjords continues on towards Tyssedal
Tyssedal is the next port of call for this Hardangerfjord cruise. The village is most well-known for its spectacular hydropower plant. Situated right on the water’s edge and looking more like a Venetian palazzo than an industrial building, the power plant was opened in 1908. In 2009, it was included in Norway’s tentative list of candidates for inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage List, along with the Odda smelting works and the Rjukan-Notodden industrial heritage site. The Tyssedal Power Plant is now a museum and well worth a visit.
Thank you for sailing with Aurora of The Fjords!
The Hardanger fjord sightseeing trip ends in the town of Odda. A popular destination for the pioneers of tourism in the mid 19th century thanks to the beauty of its location at the head of Sørfjord, Odda became an industrial powerhouse through its early exploitation of hydropower for smelting and carbide production. Nowadays, Odda is returning to its roots as an attractive tourist destination. The spectacular rock formation called Trolltunga (the troll’s tongue) has put Odda on the map, while visitors can enjoy a wealth of other activities and high-quality places to eat.
We look forward to welcoming you aboard the Hardangerfjord cruise on the cider boat. We can promise you unforgettable views of the fjord and surrounding mountains, as well as opportunities to explore the area’s natural and cultural heritage.
We are sailing daily from Eidfjord to Ulvik, further on the Lofthus and doing several stops along the fjord all the way to Odda.

Sørfjorden in Hardanger
The 38 kilometer long Sørfjorden is one of the many side fjords of the Hardangerfjord.
Along Sørfjorden are small picturesque villages like pearls on a string, surrounded by fjords, mountains, waterfalls and rivers and not least all the fruit trees that are widely known for their beautiful blossoming in spring.
In the villages around Sørfjorden, there are cafés and restaurants and sales of produce from local orchards.
Here you can read more about Sørfjorden which has attracted travellers since the dawn of time, ever since English tourists discovered Norway in the mid-19th century.
But Sørfjorden and Hardanger have attracted travellers long before the tourists rediscovered our country in the 19th century. As early as the 13th century, British monks taught local people how to grow apple trees. You can see the result of this today, with with many hundreds of thousands of apple trees scattered around Sørfjorden and throughout Hardanger.
Odda at Sørfjorden – The “hub” for the adventurous people
Odda is the perfect base if you want to explore the wild and beautiful nature in the Hardangerfjord area.

Tyssedal by Sørfjorden, the neighbour village to Odda
Like Odda, Tyssedal is an industrial village that was settled and developed by the hydroelectric power and metal industry in the early 20th century.
Both iron, steel and aluminum plants were started up in Tyssedal, but it did not take many years before they were closed down. Today, an ilmenite-plant are operated in Tyssedal. The Hydroelectric Power Museum , which is a cultural history museum, is today located in the old hydroelectric power plant in Tyssedal.
The hike to Lilletopp and Oksla is short, but the reward is a great view down towards Sørfjorden and to the surrounding mountains. Lilletopp is the top of the pipelines, which runs steep down to the power plant in Tyssedal.
It is also from Tyssedal you take off towards Skjeggedal which is the starting point of the Trolltunga hikes.
The history of the beautiful Tyssedal Hotel dates back to when the hydroelectric power adventure began in the early 20th century. The hotel was used as accommodation for the management of the hydroelectric power plant. Today it is a great boutique hotel and restaurant which is an experience in itself.
Hike to Lilletopp in Tyssedal
The hike to Lilletopp is short, but the reward is a great view down towards Sørfjorden and the surrounding mountains.
Lilletopp is where the caretaker’s residence is located, from the time when the power plant was in operation.
No one lives at Lilletopp anymore, but there is a small café there during the high season in the summer.
From Lilletopp you can continue the hike to Mt Oksla where you have a great panoramic view down to Sørfjorden. There is a steep stairway and then a short hike from Lilletopp to Mt Oksla.

The idyllic fjord village Lofthus is best known for its apple tree blossoming and the composer Edvard Grieg. Lofthus is an idyllic fjord village situated in the northern part of Sørfjorden, on the eastern side of the fjord.
In the 13th century, British monks teached the locals how to cultivate fruit trees. You can see the result of this today, with hundreds of thousands of fruit trees spread around in Lofthus and Hardanger.
Lofthus is referred to as the Orchard of Hardanger. In addition to apples, a lot of cherries (moreller) are also grown in Lofthus. Every year, a Morelle Festival is held, where among other things, there is an official Norwegian championship in Cherry Stone Spitting.
Hotel Ullensvang in the centre of Lofthus is one of Norway`s beautiful Historic Hotels. Lofthus Camping is perhaps the most beautifully situated campsite in Norway.
Blossoming in Hardanger
Hardanger is widely known for the wonderful apple trees, plum trees and morel trees blossoming in the spring.
In the 13th century, British monks taught the local people how to grow fruit trees. You can see the result of this today, with thousands of fruit trees scattered all around the Hardangerfjord.
You can get a taste of Hardanger when you visit one or more of the many farms that grow apple trees and produce local cider in their own farms in along the Hardangerfjord. Several of these farms are located in Lofthus where you can visit the farms and buy and taste the local cider products.
Lofthus Sideri , Helleland Gard , Alvavoll Frukt- og Sidergard , Opedalstunet and Lofthus Ekspedisjon are all located in Lofthus and are well worth a visit.

Agatunet Farm Cluster at Nå
Agatunet is a farm cluster with 67 protected buildings located in the village Nå on the west side of Sørfjorden in Hardanger.
The history of Agatunet goes back several thousand years. The oldest building in the farmyard is Lagmannsstova from 1220, it is a log house on high basement walls. Sigurd Brynjulfsson, who was one of King Eirik Magnusson’s advisers, lived there. This is the oldest medieval building in the country that still stands.
Today, Agatunet is a museum with exhibitions, experiences, a café and a shop. But most of all, Agatunet is a beautiful place to be and to see, experience and to explore.
Utne, Utne Hotel and Hardanger Folk Museum
Utne is an idyllic small village located down by the Utnefjord in Hardanger. Here is one of Norway’s oldest hotels and the first hotel in Hardanger, beautiful and historic Utne Hotel .
Utne Church is located right next to the hotel. The beautiful church was built in 1895.
At the very end of the small village and right above the fjord you will find Hardanger Folk Museum . There you can walk in the museum farmyard which is an old farm cluster.

In addition to hiking tours , Destination Herand also offers photo safaris and adventures by bike and kayak starting from Herand, which can perhaps best be described as a beautiful national romantic postcard.
Ulvik in Hardanger
Ulvik in Hardanger is known for its Apple Tree Blossoming, Cider Production and not at least as the home of the poet Olav H. Hauge. But most important, Ulvik is an idyllic fjord village that is worth visiting all year round.
Ulvik, which is the name of both the village and the municipality, is located northeast and at the innermost part of the Hardangerfjord. Bergen Railway runs through Ulvik Herad, and Finse Station at 1222 masl is also located in the municipality. From fjord to high mountains is therefore descriptive of Ulvik.
In summer, you can take part in a Cider Cruise on the Hardangerfjord, where you can combine a fjord cruise in beautiful nature with a visit to some of the local farms along the fjord. Some of these farms are located in Ulvik.
Brakanes Hotel in Ulvik is idyllically located down by the Ulvikafjord and is one of several Historic Hotels in Norway. Brakanes’ history began as early as in 1860, and the hotel has since been expanded at regular intervals.

The Historic Brakanes Hotel in Ulvik
In April 1940, the hotel burned down, but was rebuilt as a boarding house in 1949. The boarding house quickly became too small, and a new Brakanes Hotel was built in 1952.
The hotel is today run by the hotel chain Fjordtind , which also has hotels in Eidfjord and Øystese.
Røldal Stave Church in Røldal
Røldal Stave Church is estimated to be built between year 1200 and 1250 AD. The original church was built with the Stave Construction.
During reconstructions in 1844 and between 1913 and 1918 AD, it was discovered that Røldal Stave Church was different from other stave churches. The original walls were covered and protected by new outer walls during the last reconstruction.
In the Midde Age, Røldal Stave Church was one of the most important churches in Norway for pilgrims. Due to this, the church received large donations from the pilgrims, and the village of Røldal became quite prosperous.
Røldal Stave Church is currently in use as a regular church, but there are also guided tours in the summer. See the website of Røldal Stave Church for season and opening hours.

Trolltunga in Hardanger
As one of the most spectacular cliffs in Norway, Trolltunga has during a short time gone from being an unknown place to become one of Norway´s most famous tourist attractions. This is a relatively long and hard hike in the high mountains. The hike is not suitable for children!
It is a long and demanding mountain hike that starts from Skjeggedal not far from Odda, you should be an experienced hiker to do this hike. Due to the challenging and long hike in rapidly changing weather, we recommend you to join a Guided Hike to Trolltunga . The hike to Trolltunga and return takes around 10 to 12 hours or more.
SEASON – Summer – normally you can do the hike from mid July to mid September, all depending on the weather and the amount of snow in the mountains. Normally the terrain in the high mountains along the trail to Trolltunga is covered with snow well into the summer. See the official website of Trolltunga for more information about the hike, season and guiding.
IMPORTANT – The weather can change dramatically in the Norwegian mountains. This is why you should follow the Norwegian Mountain Code when hiking in Norway. It can change from summer and sunny weather to winter and frost in minutes, also in summer. Always check the weather before you go hiking. For safety reasons, it is recommended to avoid hiking in thunderstorms, in fog, in bad weather and when there is snow and ice in the terrain and on the paths.

The video below is from a summer-hike to Trolltunga with a few short detours. The detours were done to get some extra great views.
Dronningstien Hike – H.M. Queen Sonja´s Panoramic Trail
The Dronningstien trail is famous for being one of HM Queen Sonja´s favorite hiking trails. The most normal starting point is at Røte in Kinsarvik and ends at Lofthus, making it a total of 16 kilometers long.
This is a long hike, a total of 16 kilometers to walk. The 6-10 hour long hike is heavy and steep, so it is recommended for more experienced hikers.
It is an approximately 15 minutes drive from the Hotel Ullensvang to Røte in Kinsarvik, the starting point of HM Queen Sonja´s hike. In connection with Dronningstien and the many other mountain hikes you can do in the area, you can book transport along this road at Shuttlebus Hardanger .
We recommend the use of a guide on the hike along Dronningstien. Trolltunga Active organizes guided hikes along the Dronningstien trail. There you also get information about season and other practical information.
Road Trip from the Lysefjord to the Hardangerfjord
A few years ago I had a Road Trip in Ryfylke, Sunnhordland and Hardanger, and visited some of Norway’s best-known and most beautiful tourist icons.
On this round trip, I started with a hike to Mt Preikestolen and got to see the fantastic view of the Lysefjord . In Hardanger I hiked to Lake Bondhusvatnet , visited Låtefoss Waterfall in Oddadalen and spent the night at Ullensvang Hotel in Lofthus.
I went up to Heng which is the starting point of the Dronningstien Hike and got to see the wonderful view of four branches of the Hardangerfjord; Sørfjorden, Utnefjord, Eidfjord and Kinsarvikbukti.
The last part of the drive went from Kinsarvik to Eidfjord, up Måbødalen and over Hardangervidda Mountain Plateau. On the way I took a short detour to Fossli Hotel to see the panoramic view over Vøringsfossen Waterfall .
Hardanger National Tourist Route
The 158-kilometer-long Hardanger National Tourist Route passes through the scenic Hardangerfjord area, where for more than a century travellers have come to experience mountains, fjords, waterfalls and glaciers.
Two great hikes in the area are the hike to Trolltunga and HM Queen Sonja´s Panoramic Trail. The area offers many opportunities for hiking, outdoor adventure and culture experiences.
A drive along Sørfjorden from Kinsarvik to Lofthus
The drive along the nine kilometer long road between Kinsarvik and Lofthus is a great experience, with farms and beautiful cultural landscape on the hillsides between mountains and fjords as a backdrop.
The road is part of the Hardanger National Tourist Route . Many of those who will hike Dronningstien stay at Hotel Ullensvang in Lofthus and drive along this road either before or after the hike, depending on where they start the hikes from.
Remember that the road is narrow and winding and in many places there is room for only one vehicle in the width, so you must drive carefully and be prepared to stop and reverse to the nearest meeting place.
In connection with Dronningstien and the many other mountain hikes you can do in the area, you can book transport along this road at Shuttlebus Hardanger .
Hardangervidda National Tourist Route
The 67-kilometer-long road passes through the Hardangervidda National Park and Northern Europe’s largest mountain plateau.
The Måbødalen valley and Vøringsfossen Waterfall are two tourist attractions you can see from the road. There might be a chance that the road is closed in short periods during winter.
Lake Bondhusvatnet
If you drive from Odda through the 11,150 meter long Folgefonn tunnel to Mauranger and continue seven kilometers to Sundal and a bit up the valley, you can walk the 2.5 kilometer long gravel road to Lake Bondhusvatnet.
The hiking route is surrounded by beautiful and wild nature with steep mountains and waterfalls on all sides. This is a nice hike on a good gravel road.
At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Bondhusbreen Glacier was much larger than it is now, and the massive glacier could be seen from the outlet of Lake Bondhusvatnet.
Today, the glacier has retreated and the glacier arm is much smaller, but it can still be seen from the outlet of Lake Bondhusvatnet.
Oddadalen Valley, Lake Sandvinvatnet and the Waterfalls
Odda is a great hub if you want to see some of the most beautiful and wild nature Norway has to offer.
There is a short distance to the Oddadalen Valley with the famous waterfalls like Låtefossen and Tjørnadalsfossen Waterfalls.
The beautiful lake Sandvinvatnet separates Odda and Oddadalen valley with the great waterfalls. Trolltunga Camping and Trolltunga Hotel in Odda are both at the lakeside with great view to lake Sandvinvatnet.
Buerdalen Valley with Buarbreen Glacier and the fantastic Buer Restaurant is a short drive up the valley from the north-west side of the lake.
Summer Ski on FONNA Glacier Ski Resort
There are three Summer Ski Centres in Norway. One of them is Fonna Glacier Ski Resort which is located on the Folgefonna Glacier in Jondal in Kvinnherad in Hardanger. Restaurant FONNA is located at 1199 masl, at the base of the ski resort.
From the ski resort you have fjord view to the Hardangerfjord. From the top of the ski-lift you can see towards the Hardangerfjord in several directions.
The road up to FONNA Glacier Ski Resort
The 19 kilometer long road that goes from Jondal to Folgefonna Glacier and FONNA Glacier Ski Resort is an experience in itself.
The road that goes from the Hardangerfjord (0 masl) to Folgefonna Glacier (1199 masl) takes about 30 minutes to drive, and goes through beautiful cultural landscape with small farms with cultivated land, forests, rivers and waterfalls to snow-covered high mountains and glacial landscapes.
Remember that the road is narrow and winding and in many places there is room for only one vehicle in the width, so you must drive carefully and be prepared to stop and reverse to the nearest meeting place. The road is also a wonderful and tiring experience for those who swear by cycling.
The road is closed in winter and usually opens between mid May and early June, this depends on the amount of snow. More information about opening hours on FONNA’s website .
Kjeåsen Mountain Farm and Simadalsfjorden
Eidfjord in the eastern part of the Hardangerfjord is a great base for nature experiences and activities.
You can drive to Kjeåsen Mountain Farm above Simadalen in Eidfjord and enjoy the great view down to Simadalsfjorden and to Eidfjord in the innermost part of the Hardangerfjord.
NOTE – It is not allowed to enter the private properties at Kjeåsen. Respect privacy.
NOTE – You need to drive on a steep and narrow road and through a 2.6 kilometer long tunnel up to Kjeåsen. The tunnel is also steep and narrow. Due to this, t raffic to and from Kjeåsen is regulated so only one direction can be driven at a time. There may be some waiting time because of this. You need to have this in mind when planning the drive in both directions.
NOTE – It is forbidden to walk or bike through the tunnel.
NOTE – The road is closed during winter, depending on temperature and snow.
Vøringsfossen Waterfall
Between Eidfjord and the Hardangervidda Mountain Plateau, the Måbødalen Valley and Vøringsfossen Waterfall are two tourist attractions visible from the road.
You can drive to the view point and see the Vøringsfossen Waterfall from above, or you can do a short 45 minutes hike and experience the waterfall from the below.
Vøringsfossen Waterfall is a viewpoint located along the road that is part of the Hardangervidda National Tourist Route .
A new viewing platform and a viewing bridge above the Vøringsfossen Waterfall has been constructed in conjunction with the Hardangervidda National Tourist Route. There is a short walk to both of those viewpoints from the parking lot at Fossli Hotel .
SEASON – June to September, depending on temperature and snow. NOTE – You should never walk on the viewing platforms and the bridge if there are snow and ice, this is not safe!
The Hardangerfjord Area – Geology and Landscape
The Hardangerfjord has its main direction from southwest to northeast in Vestland county. It has its beginning where the fjord meets the open sea, the North Sea, and can be followed 180 kilometer inwards to Eidfjord. It also has a number of tributary fjords.
The Hardangerfjord mainly follows the limit between the more than one milliard years old Precambrian rocks largely on the southeast side of the main fjord and the 400 to 500 million years old rocks belonging to the Caledonian mountain building, which mainly are on the northwest side of the fjord.

Discover Russia with MS Volga Dream - Click-through map
We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.
Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.
This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.
Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.
The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.
A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.
Nizhny Novgorod
This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.
Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.
Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.
This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.
Saint Petersburg
If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.
Cocktails with the Captain
Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.
Matryoshka doll painting
There is nothing more typically Russian than a Matryoshka. It embodies the fact that there’s always something deeper to be found in every aspect of Russian life. Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!
Superb Service & Dining
Our restaurant serves the highest standard of international cuisine, freshly made by our Cordon Bleu Chef. Choose either a sumptuous buffet or set menu for lunch while dinner is always four or five courses with full service. High praise for the exquisite quality of meals is yet another constantly recurring feature in feedback from our guests.
Meet the Professor
From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.
Beginner’s Russian
The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!
Russian tea tasting
The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.
Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting
All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!
Russian Cooking Class
A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.
Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital
Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.
