30 Epic Graduation Trip Ideas (2024 USA & International)

30 graduation trip ideas

Whether you have a senior in high school or college, graduation is something to be celebrated! Some may want a party, a car, or help with their college tuition, but many would love to celebrate this accomplishment with a dream trip. As the school year begins its rapid roll toward the inevitable end of an era, it is time to start thinking about graduation trip ideas.

A grad trip serves the double purpose of celebrating the completion of this phase of schooling and an enticement for those fledglings to return to the nest from time to time. We put together a list of options for my high school senior to choose from and for those of you looking for high school graduation trip ideas, college graduation trip ideas, or senior trip ideas, I have some great suggestions for you!

The thing to consider though when planning a high school or college graduation trip is that while you may want it to be a bucket list experience or a trip of a lifetime; if you really want to take a trip right after graduation in May or June, you need to keep the season in mind.

Summer is the high season for family travel, which means crowds, peak pricing, and a need for advance planning. If you can travel in early to mid-June, you can avoid the high peak that starts in early July as European schools let out for the summer.

It is also an ideal time to visit destinations in the Northern Hemisphere, but Southern Hemisphere destinations vary in attractiveness from June-August as they experience their winter months. So forget the idea of seeing penguins in Antarctica and it may not be ideal for hiking in Patagonia or New Zealand either unless you want to wait for Christmas break. But there are still so many fantastic destinations to choose from.

Even if you have traveled extensively in the United States, there are still so many destinations and experiences that can make a graduation trip truly special. Here are a few that particularly shine in June.

lighting torch at sunset on Black Rock on Maui

The exotic allure of the Aloha State may be the perfect balm after a stressful senior year. The Big Island of Hawaii is the only place in the United States to see a live volcano, while Maui is the perfect place for adventure activities like sunrise cycling down a volcanic crater or driving the road to Hana.

Just keep in mind that June through November is technically hurricane season, although big storms are rare. We visited in late June and had pretty great weather, with just some rainstorms that delivered beautiful rainbows. Find out how much a family trip to Hawaii costs .

Bear in river

Summer is the best time to visit Alaska. An Alaskan cruise is definitely a great way to see the most popular ports in Alaska, but to get a real sense of this vast and rugged state, you need to spend some time on land too (and not just on excursions .) If planning a trip to Alaska feels too daunting, you can join one of Austin Adventures’ group family trips, like the one to Kenai Fjords and Peninsula .

You can experience calving glaciers, search for wildlife, and experience the brilliance of the Midnight Sun in the Last Frontier.

Yosemite National Park, California

Women with arms up overlooking view in Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park can get crazily crowded in the summer, but if you go early enough in June, you can get there before the worst of the crowds and when the water is still strong, resulting in beautiful, powerful waterfalls. (See this guide to easy hikes in Yosemite .)

Listen to our podcast episode on Yosemite National Park for ideas on the best places to stay, hikes, and other things to do in Yosemite .

Glacier National Park, Montana

Boat on Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park is one of the most popular destinations in the U.S. National Parks system and getting a reservation in the summer can be challenging. But head to Glacier Country in early summer to beat the crowds and get better rates. Just keep in mind that there will still be snow on the ground, and it is likely that parts of the Going-to-the-Sun road that connect the parts of the park will still be closed until sometime in July, although I was there in mid-June last year and it was open.

But there is still plenty of hiking and wildlife viewing to enjoy (plus a chance to see glaciers!). After a few days in the park, you can enjoy some fun adventures near Glacier or relax at Flathead Lake Lodge, an all-inclusive dude ranch , or spend time exploring more of Western Montana .

Walt Disney World, Florida

Magic Kingdom castle from across the lake

From weddings to birthdays, every special occasion is a good fit for a trip to Disney for lovers of magic and the mouse. It might be the perfect time to splurge on a VIP tour to make the trip extra special.

While there are plenty of rides at Disney that teens love, thrill-seekers will also like adding on a few days at Universal or some of the water parks , especially for those hot June days. And when it rains, try some of these nearby Orlando attractions .

Grand Canyon, Arizona

Grand Canyon (photo from Canva)

There are two huge downsides to visiting the Grand Canyon in the summer — the crowds and the heat. But, if you go in June it is a little more manageable, especially if you go to the less-visited North Rim, which doesn’t even open until mid-May.

To make the trip extra special, and thrilling, you can arrange for helicopter flights over the canyon, mule rides or hikes into the canyon, or multi-day float trips along the Colorado River. You can also make this part of an epic southwest road trip .

New York, New York

View of lower Manhattan at sunset from the Empire State building

Bright lights, big city — if your graduate has never visited the Big Apple, a visit to New York City can make a great graduation trip. Get tickets for the must-see Broadway show. Visit museums. Take a food tour. Go shopping. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. The possibilities are endless in the city that never sleeps.

Make sure you fit in some of the newer attractions like Hudson Yards, Summit at One Vanderbilt, Little Island @ Pier 55, the 9/11 Memorial, the Highline, or even try the new Edge NYC Skydeck. Teens also love Instagramable food stops like rainbow bagels, taiyakis, specialty cupcakes, crazy milkshakes, and more.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas sign with city skyline behind

College grads may enjoy exercising some of their new liberties in Las Vegas, but even high school graduates can enjoy under-21 attractions. The hotels along Vegas’ famous Strip are a spectacle in and of itself. Add to that one-of-a-kind entertainment, celebrity chef-owned restaurants, and thrills like the X-Scream ride at the Stratosphere Hotel, FlyOver Las Vegas , or the SkyJump off the Stratosphere Tower.

Of course outside of Las Vegas, you can also go hiking in Red Rock Canyon, visit Hoover Dam, or drive a luxury sports car or race car.

California Coast

Tips for driving Highway One on the California Coast

Rent a convertible and take your grad on a classic U.S. road trip down the California coast . Start off with a few days in San Francisco , then head down to Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea . Next, take your time exploring the beautiful coastline along Highway 1 down to Big Sur.

On the central coast, you can ride on the sand dunes, zip line through a winery, and enjoy all the small beach towns on your way to Los Angeles . Finish off with surf lessons in Huntington Beach, a tour of Universal Studios, or a day at Disneyland. If you have a college grad you can even add on a few days in Sonoma or Paso Robles for wine tasting.

Puerto Rico

El Yunque rainforest in Puerto Rico with mist over mountains

Craving an island vacation? You don’t need a passport to visit Puerto Rico. There you can enjoy gorgeous beaches, the El Yunque rainforest, outdoor adventures, and soak up the history in Old San Juan.

In Vieques and elsewhere on the island, you can even experience the magic of bioluminescence with a nighttime kayaking excursion.

Utah’s Mighty 5 National Parks

Delicate arch in Arches National Park (from Canva)

Things are starting to heat up in the southwest in June, but you can still fit in an epic trip to all five of Utah’s national parks — Arches, Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef National Parks. Or, if you really enjoy hiking and getting off the beaten path, focus on just a couple of the parks. If you are visiting two parks or more, be sure to invest in the National Parks Pass .

Start off in Salt Lake City and then head to Moab to explore Arches and Canyonlands. Next, head over to Capitol Reef and Bryce. Finish up in St. George and Zion National Park. You can then fly out of Las Vegas or loop back up to Salt Lake City. Be sure to listen to this podcast for some great tips on off-the-beaten-path stops on a Southwest Grand Circle road trip or read my friend Lesli’s Utah National Parks road trip itinerary .

Maine Windjammer Cruise

Schooner Heritage on the water

Large ship cruising may not be your cup of tea, but there are other small ship possibilities available. If your student loves sailing, then a trip aboard one of the Maine Windjammer cruises will be right up their alley. Enjoy gourmet meals and lobster bakes on the beach. Assist the crew and enjoy watching the scenic coastline glide by. Explore the rugged coastline and small seaside towns of the Maine coast .

For a real splurge, book cabins with your friends and family for a group vacation on the sea. Pair it up with a Coastal Maine road trip or a fun glamping stay near Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park .

Key West, Florida

Florida Keys Overseas Highway

One of my favorite east coast road trips is along the Overseas Highway in the Florida Keys . This scenic trip is great for graduates that love water sports — like windsurfing, snorkeling, kayaking, and scuba diving.

It is also a perfect spot for future marine biologists to visit a sea turtle hospital, explore marine preserves, study dolphins, and enjoy nature up close. Of course, all the key lime pie is also a great perk!

New Orleans, Louisiana

Balconies in the French Quarter New Orleans

Your foodie teen will enjoy a trip to the Big Easy for a food and music extravaganza. Enjoy food tours, cooking classes, and everything from celebrity-chef restaurants to the best of diners, drive-ins, and dives.

Then soak in the culture with history tours (or ghost tours), a visit to Mardi Gras World, and plenty of live jazz music. If you have time to get out of town, be sure to try an airboat tour!

Black Hills, South Dakota

Mount Rushmore

There are tons of ways for teens and young adults to seek adventure in the Black Hills . You can bike along the Mickelson Trail, one of the old rail trails that runs for 108.8 miles from Edgemont to Deadwood. Don’t worry, you don’t need to bike the whole thing. Instead, you can rent bikes and arrange for shuttle pick-ups and drop-offs to only bike as far as you choose. There is also go rock climbing, horseback riding, and enjoy amazing wildlife viewing in Custer State Park.

Be sure to leave extra days for side ventures to Devil’s Tower in Wyoming and the stunning Badlands National Park . And even if they haven’t had enough of learning for a while, make sure to visit Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and the Minuteman Missile Silo Historic Site.

15 International Graduation Trip Ideas

There are so many bucket list destinations that are great places to visit in June for a graduation trip. Here are a few options for adventure seekers, outdoor lovers, cultural explorers, and wildlife lovers.

Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsness

June is my absolute favorite time to visit Iceland, especially if you can be there for the Summer Solstice. Just be aware that many businesses and attractions are closed on June 17th for Iceland Independence Day. The weather is starting to warm up and you have full days of sunlight to explore.

Iceland is the perfect spot for outdoor adventurers. Spend a few days on the gorgeous South Coast chasing waterfalls, visiting black sand beaches, hiking on glaciers, and sailing between the icebergs. To get away from the crowds, spend a few days up in the rugged and remote West Fjords . Find out how much a trip to Iceland costs and read my Iceland travel tips .

family in Shinsekai

It took us until my daughter was in college to finally get to Japan, but this bucket list destination is perfect for a graduation trip. Immersing yourselves in a new culture is great practice for the new challenges that lie ahead for your grad. While things will be heating up in June and you can expect some rain, your grad will love exploring the food, shopping, and cultural quirkiness that lies side-by-side with ancient shrines and temples.

If you can spend two weeks in Japan , it would be ideal for getting to see Tokyo , Kyoto , and Osaka , with time for a day trip or two as well.

Giants Causeway Northern Ireland

With a drinking age of 18, graduates might enjoy some newfound freedoms in the pubs of Ireland — after all, what better place to soak in the Irish culture? Start off in Dublin , and then head off to Northern Ireland and the Coastal Causeway .

In the Republic of Ireland, don’t miss the Cliffs of Moher and a drive along the Wild Atlantic Way. The town of Killarney and the Dingle Peninsula are some of my favorite spots in Ireland. Find out how much a trip to Ireland costs and tips for traveling to Ireland .

Azores, Portugal

waterfall at Ribeira dos Caldeiroes

Natural beauty abounds in the Azores , the archipelago of Portuguese islands in the Atlantic. In June, big hydrangea blooms decorate the island in a mix of pinks, purples, and blues. This is a perfect setting for outdoor lovers, particularly on the island of Pico, home to the Mount Pico volcano. For adventure seekers, you can go coasteering, canyoning, hiking, surfing, and more on the largest island of São Miguel .

Finish up with a few days on the mainland enjoying the colorful festivals taking place in Lisbon or Porto . The Azores are a great destination for the grad that likes to do something different than everyone else and its blend of the best of Hawaii, Iceland, and Ireland make it truly unique.

Path across water to Naxos town

A week or two spent island hopping in the Cyclades is a perfect way to chill out after the exhaustion of final exams. Mid-June through mid-July is the perfect time to visit. The islands of Santorini and Mykonos are jammed in the summer, especially once the cruise ships start coming to port, but you can still avoid crowds on smaller islands like Naxos or spread out on Crete . The weather is warm but not scorching hot, and the daytime winds are not as strong as later in the summer.

Start off in Mykonos or Santorini for an introduction to the Greek Islands’ party scene, and then spend some time at some of the quieter islands, like Naxos, Paros, Crete, or some of the off-the-beaten-track islands. Find out how much a trip to Greece costs or check out our 10-day Greece itinerary.

Tuscan hillside

Like much of Europe, Italy is beautiful in early June, before the heat and tourists descend. You will want to hit the highlights in Rome and Florence , but then take some time to relax and enjoy the Tuscan countryside where you can bike through vineyards and swim in thermal pools.

You may even be able to arrange to test drive a Ferrari or sample the culinary delights in Bologna or Parma on your way to Venice . Finish up with some hiking in the Italian Dolomites. In June you are guaranteed sunny days and warm evenings in the mountains, with not too much humidity. After a day of hiking or biking, enjoy the local culinary delicacies over lunch at a mountain rifugio or a slopeside picnic.

If your grad prefers lazing on the beach, skip the gondolas and mountains and head down to the Amalfi Coast or the gorgeous island of Capri . Just make your reservations early and don’t be surprised to be rubbing elbows with newlyweds and retirees.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

History buffs (and Game of Thrones fans) will love the medieval city of Dubrovnik on the Dalmatian Coast. June is the perfect time to explore before the peak summer crowds and cruise ships arrive in July and August.

To escape the crowds, the best way to explore Croatia is by boat. Charter a sailboat and head out on the Adriatic Sea to nearby Lokrum Island or further to Korcula, one of the more charming islands in Croatia. There are also adventure activities for active teens such as biking trips, hiking, and water sports.

Switzerland

Matterhorn behind a blue lake and green fields in Switzerland

Your young adventurer may enjoy hiking in the Swiss Alps after graduation. It can still be rainy in May and early June, or snowy at higher altitudes, so shoot for late June or even early July. There are many routes for hut-to-hut (or hotel-to-hotel) hiking. Or you can settle in near Interlaken and soak in the scenery and outdoor adventures.

Interlaken is home to many extreme sports, including mountaineering, bungee jumping, zorbing, skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, helicopter skydiving, white water rafting, canyoning, ice climbing, rock climbing, trekking, and so much more.

Art lovers will also want to check out the international art show at Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland, which draws top artists from around the world. In Basel, you can also bike to three countries in one day! Bike to France and have a croissant, have a beer and lunch in Germany, and return to Switzerland and float down the river before dinner.

Dad and teen in Paris

The weather in Paris in June is perfect, the cherry blossoms are in bloom, and there are long days of sunshine to explore the city at its most romantic. Of course, summer is also when the tourists descend so it is critical to go in June (the earlier the better) before school lets out for summer in France and the United Kingdom.

Even so, it is important to book early for prime locations (see my guide for renting an apartment in Paris ) and attractions (reservations and/or timed entry tickets are needed for many attractions, including the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower.)

It is also a city where you can give your teen a little independence to practice language skills and prepare to go out on their own. Indulge your graduate’s interests in art, history, or food with private tours and cooking classes. Find out how much a trip to Paris costs , check out our 5-day Paris itinerary , and download our Paris trip planning checklist .

South Africa

Zebras on savannah in Tanzania (from Canva)

June to August is winter in South Africa, but it is also the ideal time to book a safari in Kruger or other parks. The game viewing is ideal because the bush is less dense, but the beautiful golden grasses capture the light and provide excellent photo opportunities. Plus, the dry weather typically means few to no mosquitos!

While June is typically the rainy season in Cape Town, it has a little bit of everything, which makes it the perfect destination for a graduation trip. The city is surrounded by beaches and mountains, with plenty of opportunities for adventure from cage-diving with sharks to zip-lining through mountains and forests. Your graduate can also snorkel with seals or go sea kayaking with penguins. There is also the potential to see whales along South Africa’s Whale Coast between June and November.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Watching The Great Migration in Serengeti National Park is an unforgettable experience, and June is a great time to see it. In the Western Corridor area, you can find herds of wildebeest, gazelles, and zebras as they make their way north in search of food, water, and breeding grounds.

Because June falls within Serengeti’s dry season, you’ll find less foliage, making animals easier to spot, as well as fewer mosquitos. The temperature is moderate and pleasant during the day, but chilly for early morning safaris or nights in the safari tents. This is truly a bucket list experience for families.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

While technically winter, the weather is never too terribly cold in Australia and you will find good deals on flights and hotels. It is also a perfect time to see the Great Barrier Reef. There is very little rain so diving conditions are at their peak — perfect for checking scuba diving off a bucket list.

Beyond the Reef, northern Queensland, the Northern Territory, and northern Western Australia are at their best in June. Remember, the further south you go, the colder it will be.

Palm tree and white sand in Fiji

If a tropical escape is what your student needs to relax, set your sights a bit further than the Caribbean all the way to the South Pacific. It is also technically winter in Fiji in June, but the temps never get too cold and you can just miss the summer rush that starts in July. June is one of the best months to visit Fiji, with ideal weather, countless activity options, cheaper hotel rates, and smaller crowds.

From the rich Fijian culture to the incredible beaches, there are countless reasons why Fiji’s 333 islands are the perfect vacation destination for a graduation trip.

Machu Picchu in Peru

Does your student love to learn about ancient civilizations or archeology? Summer is a great time to visit the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu. Start your journey in Lima, Peru’s vibrant capital city, or Cusco, a scenic three-hour train ride from Machu Picchu. Just be sure to give yourself time to adjust to the altitude, especially if you are considering hiking in the Sacred Valley. Reservations are also needed at this popular tourist destination.

The Amazon’s dry season starts in June, so you can pair a visit to Machu Picchu with time spent exploring the rainforest or traveling the Amazon by boat.

View of pools and beach at Ritz Carlton Aruba from above

Sitting below the hurricane belt, Aruba, along with its neighboring islands of Bonaire and Curaçao, enjoys a dry season in the summer. Yet since summer in the Caribbean isn’t high on many people’s lists, you can also enjoy lower rates and fewer crowds.

Off-road on this desert island, go horseback riding on the beach, enjoy sunset catamaran sails, and spend some time with flamingoes on this Dutch island.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!

Graduation cap and diploma with Allianz Travel insurance website on phone

Once you have booked your dream trip to celebrate your graduate, don’t forget to purchase travel insurance! Travel insurance can protect you in the case of unexpected and unforeseen circumstances that may arise on your trip such as trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, theft, emergency medical expenses and transportation (this is especially important when traveling out of the country!), travel delays, rental car damage, and more.

Even better, also gift your graduate an annual travel insurance plan that protects their trips all year long. It is the perfect gift for kids that will be flying back and forth to college or young adults just starting out in their career and spending their newfound paid time off traveling.

Before we sent our daughter off to college in Arizona, I made sure she was covered by an AllTrips Premier annual travel insurance plan from Allianz Travel. Allianz Travel has been our trusted travel insurance provider for years and the investment has paid off in multitudes. Not only do I know that her trips to school and back are protected against flight cancellations, travel delays, and lost luggage, but as an inexperienced solo traveler it gives us both peace of mind knowing that she has access to a 24-hour hotline for assistance on all sorts of travel emergencies.

9 Graduation Trip Ideas for Every Budget

By Megan Spurrell

A graduation vacation is about more than knocking back drinks in a foreign land. Such adventures can also offer moments of reflection on what lies ahead. Choosing how to spend this milestone trip isn’t easy, either. In addition to setting a budget and choosing your travel companions, recent grads should consider what they want to get out of the trip, advises Shelby Albo, travel consultant at Embarc Collective . Here, we’ve pulled together nine unforgettable graduation trip ideas that appeal to a range of travel styles—no matter what your budget is.

The other Southeast Asia loop

“Backpacking trips in a foreign country are truly unbeatable, especially for graduation,” says Jen Richardson, a travel planner at Scouted . We all know the classic loop through Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos, and it’s a great one—the region is affordable for travelers spending U.S. dollars and there is no shortage of cultural sites, natural wonders, and lively parties. But you can find all of that and more on a less-traveled path farther south.  In Indonesia, visit the bustling capital of Jakarta, scooter between rice fields in Ubud, and kick back on the postcard-perfect islands of Lombok and Bali . Experience a mix of cultures in Malaysia by tasting laksa curry on the streets of Penang and visiting the Hindu temples in the Batu Caves, then swing down to Singapore . It isn’t cheap by any stretch, but a few days in the street food capital—which has colorful architecture, lush hiking trails, and a high-tech airport with a butterfly garden and movie theater—are worth the end-of-trip-splurge.

A weekend (or longer) in Puerto Rico

The Commonwealth is an easy flight from much of the U.S., and you don’t even need a passport. If you have just a weekend, book an Airbnb in one of the candy-colored colonial buildings of Old San Juan, where reggaeton and salsa fill the streets and the Bad Bunny–approved cocktail bar La Factoría comes alive seven nights a week. If you have five to seven days to explore, plan a multi-stop road trip around the island—surfing on the West Coast, night kayaking in one of Puerto Rico's three bioluminescent bays, and baking on the dazzling white sands of Culebra Island.

South India immersion

You want to go far, but you don’t want to go alone: Intrepid Travel’s group trips are built around this premise, with accessible price points always front of mind. The outfitter’s two-week Real South India trip (from $909 per person) is a great graduation trip idea—it takes up to 16 free spirits (ages 18 to 29) from Hyderabad to Kochi, with five stops and two overnight trains in between. See Bollywood film sets in Ramoji Film City, explore Hindu temples in Mamallapuram, observe elephants and tigers in Bandipur National Park, and feast on stuffed dosa in Madurai. The rate covers guides, accommodations, select meals, and numerous activities; set your Google Flights tracker now for a stellar airline deal.

The Utah parks circuit

Grab a few pals and pile into a van to go park-hopping in Utah . The state’s national parks and monuments promise slot canyons ( Zion and Grand Staircase-Escalante), forests of rock hoodoos ( Bryce Canyon ), sand dunes (at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park), and bright red rock carved by the Colorado River (Canyonlands), to name just a few of the Beehive State’s otherworldly landscapes. Spend your days hiking and evenings camping under the stars—the Fruita Campground in Capitol Reef National Park is worth planning around—in settings so stunning, they'll stick with you for a lifetime.

A sunny Caribbean cruise

After years of grinding, you might be ready to simply laze in the sun—a true treat-yourself moment before starting college or before your first job begins. Book a spot on a Caribbean cruise , which will have space for all of your friends and won’t require you to lift a single finger once you are onboard. Royal Caribbean offers a huge selection of affordable cruises departing from New York, Florida, and Galveston, Texas. Go for one of the five-night options , which stop in the crystalline waters of Cozumel, Mexico, and George Town, Grand Cayman, and offer plenty of nightlife and poolside entertainment options to keep things interesting.

Southern U.S. road trip

For a memorable American road trip, make the drive from Atlanta to West Texas , with stops in New Orleans and Austin en route. You’ll find music and nightlife all along the way—Atlanta’s Trap Music Museum and Second Line parades weaving through the streets of NOLA are not to be missed—plus roadside photo ops (hello, Marfa Prada store ). Scrimp by staying at Airbnbs in each destination; if you’re traveling with just a friend or two, rented rooms, instead of private apartments, are a great way to meet other travelers. Staying at locally owned properties is "such a good way to support the local culture and will make for a rich experience,” says Richardson.

A tour through South America

This may not be among the first graduation trip ideas that come to mind, but why not put those years of Spanish to use in South America? While the distances are greater than those in Southeast Asia, and the prices somewhat higher, sticking to the northwestern edge of the continent will give you the best bang for your buck. Plus, “planes are super affordable,” says Katalina Mayorga, founder of El Camino Travel , thanks to new budget lines such as Viva Air Colombia and Star Perú.  In four to eight weeks, you can hit the Caribbean coast in Colombia (with stops in Cartagena and Tayrona National Natural Park); the Andean cities of Medellín , Quito , and La Paz ; and ogle natural wonders like the Amazon rain forest (best accessed via Iquitos, Peru), the Uyuni salt flats of southwest Bolivia, and, of course, Machu Picchu . From learning about Afro-Caribbean dance to touring Inca archaeological sites, you’ll have loads to talk about with the fellow travelers you meet in hostels along the way.

Eastern Europe backpacking trip

“European backpacking trips are still very popular,” says Albo. “The ease of traveling from one country to another is an attractive aspect.” Not only is Eastern Europe more affordable than France, Spain, and Italy, it’s less crowded than its western neighbors—despite offering just as many reasons to visit. In dreamy Old World cities like Prague and Budapest , regal churches and castles are just as appealing as the edgy nightlife scenes. (Want to party in a converted bunker? Done.) By train or bus, get out to the scenic countryside and hike the Tatras mountains that border Slovakia and Poland before exploring the quaint old town of Gdańsk. Trust us—you’ll leave wondering why the rest of your friends haven’t considered Eastern Europe yet.

The Camino de Santiago

There’s something enticing about marking one milestone with another. For travelers who want to do it in hiking boots , a Camino de Santiago pilgrimage is an ideal challenge. The Camino refers to a network of trails that all lead to a shrine of Saint James the Great in Galicia, Spain, with several starting points throughout the country. Beginners, however, are recommended to follow the Camino Frances route, which begins just over the border in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the French Pyrenees. The journey takes 30 to 35 days and includes overnights in albergues (bed-and-breakfasts). If you find yourself needing a little motivation along the trail, just visualize the tapas and vino waiting for you each night.

2. Road trip across the US

Nothing bonds a group together like a long car journey, making a road trip across the US with your mates the perfect post-graduation send-off. It's hard to grasp the magnitude of the United States until you drive through it. Pick between visiting iconic national parks like Yellowstone ,   Yosemite  and the Grand Canyon , or cruising along the West Coast from the Redwoods to Joshua Tree  with a stop in some of the Golden State's famed cities, like San Francisco and Los Angeles . Uncovering the mysteries of the West has long been an American tradition, not to mention watching the landscapes change and evolve in a matter of days is a mesmerizing experience.

To keep this adventure affordable, try camping in the national parks rather than staying in hotels. It will require some advanced planning, maybe even some reservations. Visit nps.gov for more information.

Few places have the same vacation appeal as Greece . With its hot, sunny climate and stellar museums, especially the Acropolis Museum , the fantastic restaurants and endless island hopping opportunities, it's hard to have a dull moment. Pro-tip: Don't skip Athens . The birthplace of Western civilization and a paradise for thinkers, artists and scientists, come see the starting place for man's greatest ideas.

When it comes to Greece's islands, Mykonos is where the nightlife takes center stage, while Santorini provides a more romantic and relaxing atmosphere. Beware, a steep price tag comes with Greece's most popular island spots. Alternatively, if you crave a slightly less touristy experience, the Ionian Islands in early autumn make a great escape. Slow down, eat your way through fresh local delicacies and see what makes the Mediterranean way of life so revered.

4. Costa Rica

If college wasn't enough of a thrill, head to Costa Rica . Considered one of the happiest places on earth and packed with adventure opportunities, you can white water raft, zipline, traverse sky-high bridges, and surf the most stellar waves to your heart's content.

If you've spent the last four years in the heart of a city and are in dire need of some nature, warm weather, and delicious food , this after-graduation trip is for you. Start your day with a hearty serving of gallo pinto , take refuge from the heat with a street mango smothered in lime juice, salt and chili powder and wrap up the day with chifrijo,  a local dish of fried pork and beans with all the toppings. Not to mention, eating your body weight in ceviche is considered a right of passage. Pura Vida is right!

Young asian couple sightseeing in a local market in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

5. Vietnam

Affordable, beautiful and warm, a graduation trip to Vietnam gets you out of your comfort zone. Get lost in a sea of mopeds in Hanoi and slurp pho on stools along the sidewalk. Head up to Halong Bay , where you can tour its limestone islands on a junk boat. Enjoy an urban metropolis like Ho Chi Minh City , wander the Binh Tay Market  or visit Vietnam's only Taoist temple,  Khanh Van Nam Vien Pagoda , before cruising along the Mekong Delta and getting to know the locals at the Cai Rang Floating Market .

6. New Orleans, Louisiana

For a graduation trip that melds celebration with culture, look no further than New Orleans . The loud streets of this city burst with energy: live bands, dancing, cocktails and more. As New Orleans continues to be impacted by climate change, try to reduce your impact during your visit by using trains, bikes and public transport to explore the city.  Eat beignets (deep-fried pâte à choux pastries) in the French Quarter , listen to jazz in a dimly lit bar, and if you time it right, join in with the commotion of Mardi Gras . Beyond the nightlife, the Big Easy is famous for its flavorful cuisine and unique rich history. Make sure to take the time to appreciate both. Don't miss having a steaming bowl of gumbo or biting into a massive Po'boy. Follow it up with a visit to the  Ogden Museum of Southern Art , which explores the city's complex influences and longtime connection to the natural world.

A couple walks down the streets of Brooklyn laughing happily.

7. New York City

A graduation trip can also be an opportunity to test out potential places you may want to live. For many, that means New York City . Visit before you commit to living here: it's busy, loud, (sometimes) stinky and eye-openingly wonderful. But it's not for everyone. For this test run, spend your time checking out galleries and parks while eating at some amazing restaurants. It will be a pricey trip, no matter how hard you try to budget. Still, it's a great chance to meet new people and try every cuisine you can imagine. Make sure to catch the train to Brooklyn for an afternoon in the Botanical Gardens .

8. South Africa

Not ready to stop learning? Head to South Africa . With a tumultuous and storied history, a trip to this stunning country can be life-changing. Apartheid isn't that far in the rearview mirror, and its lasting effects are visible across much of the nation. Dedicate time to visiting some of the historical sites in Johannesburg, such as the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill , a former prison turned Constitutional Court. Then, hit the beach to surf some famous waves at Addington Beach along the iconic Golden Mile or catch glimpses of South Africa's diverse wildlife in the expansive Kruger National Park . Keep your eyes peeled for big cats, elephants, rhinos and more. Find time to catch at least one sunset from the top of Table Mountain . Its unmatched views are accessible by cable car in Cape Town.

GettyImages-173070430.jpg

With stunning fjords, shooting geysers, natural hot springs and the northern lights – Iceland offers an otherworldly reset from your studies. A nature-first vacation, try and dedicate some time beyond the beautiful capital Reykjavik . You'll need a large budget to chase waterfalls, sip pints and toast your graduation in Iceland, but you'll look at the world entirely anew.

10. Florence, Italy

Florence offers a decadence and youthfulness that is easier to access than in Rome or Naples , and its Renaissance beauty will fill your aching heart if you don't want to leave university or college. Marvel at Botticelli's masterpiece, the Birth of Venus, in the Uffizi and wander the expansive Boboli Gardens . Luxuriate with two-hour dinners on one of their many piazzas, climb to the top of the fabled Duomo to take in the rolling hills in the distance. There is so much to love about Florence, but like most major cities in Italy, it can be expensive, but it's the price you pay to heal your heartache.

College Graduation: A Journey to Europe

The excitement of graduating from college.

Graduating from college is a significant milestone in many people’s lives, marking the end of a chapter and the start of a new journey. It’s a time of celebration, joy, and excitement, as graduates look forward to their future and the opportunities that lie ahead. The feeling of accomplishment is palpable, as students reflect on their hard work, dedication, and perseverance that got them to this point.

The Importance of Travel

One way to mark this important milestone is by embarking on a journey to Europe, a continent steeped in history, culture, and adventure. For many graduates, traveling to Europe is a lifelong dream, and what better time to fulfill that dream than after graduation? Traveling to Europe after college is not only a fun and exciting experience, but it also offers valuable opportunities for personal growth and development.

Benefits of Traveling After Graduation

Traveling after graduation can help graduates gain a new perspective on life, broaden their horizons, and develop new skills. It’s an opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone, meet new people, and experience new cultures. It can also help graduates gain a better understanding of themselves and their place in the world, as they navigate unfamiliar territory and face new challenges.

Planning Your Trip

Embarking on a trip to Europe after graduation can seem daunting, but with proper planning, it can be an unforgettable experience. One of the first things to consider when planning a trip to Europe is the destination. Europe is a vast continent with many different countries, cultures, and languages, so it’s important to choose a destination that aligns with your interests and budget.

Choosing the Right Destination

Some popular destinations for post-graduation trips to Europe include Paris, Rome, Barcelona, and Amsterdam. These cities offer a blend of history, culture, and nightlife, making them ideal destinations for young adults. Other destinations, such as Prague, Budapest, and Krakow, offer a more affordable and off-the-beaten-path experience. It’s essential to research each destination thoroughly, taking into account factors such as language, currency, safety, and transportation.

Budgeting and Financing Your Trip

Another critical aspect of planning a trip to Europe after graduation is budgeting and financing. Traveling to Europe can be expensive, so it’s important to set a budget and stick to it. This can include expenses such as airfare, accommodations, food, transportation, and entertainment. It’s also essential to consider financing options, such as student loans or credit cards, and to avoid overextending yourself financially.

Preparing for Your Trip

Once you have your destination and budget in mind, it’s time to prepare for your trip. This can include obtaining necessary travel documents, such as a passport and visa, researching local customs and etiquette, and packing appropriate clothing and gear. It’s also essential to take care of any necessary vaccinations and to purchase travel insurance to protect yourself in case of emergencies.

Making the Most of Your Trip

Once you arrive in Europe, it’s time to start making the most of your trip. Europe offers a wide range of experiences, from historic landmarks to scenic landscapes to culinary delights.

Exploring Historic Landmarks

Europe is home to many historic landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Colosseum in Rome, and the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. These landmarks offer a glimpse into the history and culture of Europe, and are a must-see for any first-time visitor.

Scenic Landscapes and Outdoor Adventures

Europe also offers a range of outdoor adventures, from hiking in the Swiss Alps to surfing in Portugal. For nature lovers, there are many scenic landscapes to explore, such as the fjords in Norway, the beaches in Greece, and the countryside in England. These experiences can offer a sense of peace and relaxation, as well as an opportunity to connect with nature.

Culinary Delights

One of the best ways to experience European culture is through its food. Each country has its own unique cuisine, from French pastries to Italian pasta to Spanish tapas. Trying local cuisines and exploring different food markets and restaurants can be a fun and delicious way to experience Europe.

Traveling to Europe after college graduation is an exciting and unforgettable experience. It offers opportunities for personal growth and development, as well as a chance to explore new cultures and destinations. With proper planning and preparation, anyone can embark on this journey and create memories that will last a lifetime. So why not take the leap and start planning your European adventure today?

Post College Graduation Europe Trip With Friends

Hi everyone! New to the forum. I am graduating college in early May and hoping to travel Europe for 3 or so weeks (maybe 4) with friends in late May/early June. The cities we would like to see in no particular order are Barcelona, Munich, Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, one of the French Beaches, Prague and Budapest. Obviously we cannot see all them in that short of time. We all like a good time and plan to go out everywhere we go. We are planning to fly out of an airport near NYC and the cheapest places to fly to seem to be Frankfurt, Paris, London or Madrid. Completely open to suggestions and would appreciate any help starting to lay out our itinerary. Thanks in advance!

When young, foot loose and fancy free, I would suggest Budapest, Vienna and Prague. The beer halls and English Gardens in Munich are another must see for any recently graduating bohemians. Amsterdam would also be another great city for young adults, but it's just a little too far out of the way. Save it for when you get a job and get your first 2 weeks' vacation. Because you will be back. You're fortunate that 2017 airfares are currently down from recent years. I first visited Munich, Vienna and Venice while in college at the University of Innsbruck in 1970. And we've returned many, many times.

These trip planning tips are spot-on, so I'd read that first.

Prague and Budapest are the geographic outliers on your list, so I'd scratch them. Something along these lines might work:

Fly into Berlin Munich Amsterdam Paris French Riviera or beaches near France/Spain border Barcelona, then fly home.

aet, your list of destinations, and potential airports don't match, except for Paris. So my advice is don't fly into somewhere you don't intend to visit. The other is fly into one destination and out of another so that you are not backtracking. That is, look at multi-city (aka open-jaw) ticketing, which will get you near a round-trip fare.

A good guidebook will help: there are a lot of questions that you might not know to ask yet.

With 4 weeks on the ground in Europe this would be comfortable (and lots of fun .... take me ??)

Fly in to Paris, then TGV to Montpellier & TER to Collioure (3N) Train to Barcelona (4N) Fly to Munich (3N) Train to Budapest (4N) Train to Prague (3N) Train to Berlin (4N) Train to Amsterdam (3N) Train to Paris (4N) Fly out of Paris

FYI Collioure http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/france/pyrenees/3201221/Collioure-France-welcome-to-the-cut-price-Cote-dAzur.html

Thanks everyone! This is super helpful. How would you change things if we wanted to make 24 days or less?

Maybe this, assuming you can fly 'open jaw' (in to Madrid and out of Paris)

Fly in to Madrid (3N) 2.5hrs by train to Barcelona (4N) Fly to Budapest (3N) 6.5hrs by train to Prague (3N) 4.5hrs by train to Berlin (4N) 6.5hrs by train to Amsterdam (3N) 3.5hrs by train to Paris (4N) Fly out of Paris

Get your beach time in Barcelona.

Fast Eddie's itinerary is good, but that time of year I would go from south to north. More below.

Stan's advice to fly into a place you are actually visiting is golden. Hopefully you can get a good fare to Barcelona. That doesn't mean you need a direct flight!

The French axis, through Paris, is especially efficient because of the way the trains work there. I don't know what you are looking for in a French beach, so you and your copaignes should get that straight. The beaches around Nice are famous but it's a bit out of your way; there are some very nice beaches in French Catalonia (such as the previously mentioned Collioure) and of course near Barcelona.

Some advice you did not ask for: The more your group can be involved in the planning, the better trip everybody will have.

Congrats on pending graduation.

David's itineraries include really long train rides. Use bahn.com to look at train schedules. It's the German train site, but it has schedules for all of Europe. Also use rome2rio.com for various transportation options. You are likely to find that flying will save you time and may not cost more. Although rail passes may work for you - there may be deals for students and/or youth. Or you may be able to use the (rapidly disappearing) night train for one or more of your legs. To find flights, also use wiki - it's page for each airport includes a table listing all the airlines and destinations available.

For your transatlantic flights, you should look at open-jaw flights (usually by choosing the "multi-destination" option). Keep in mind that saving on those tickets may not outweigh the time and money to get to your destination cities.

Prague and Budapest are generally cheaper, paris and Amsterdam expensive and Spain and Germany in the middle. Use a site like hostelworld.com or hostelz.com to find hostels, read descriptions and reviews. You can get dorm rooms for 4 or 6 (depending on how many of you there are) with a private bath. You will have to pay for the extra bed if you're an odd number, but it could still save money. An advantage to staying in hostels is that you can get lots of info and tips from the other guests, even for places you are headed to.

Frankfurt is worth spending a day on arrival before heading to Munich.

6.5hrs by train from Budapest to Prague, and Berlin to Amsterdam are about timewise when I would start to consider a flight alternative. In both these cases, however, I would stick with the train. It's a whole day given over to travel - use it to relax and recharge in comfort.

"The cities...in no particular order...." I am aware of the list of cities is in random order but the way they appear above gives the night train option for Munich to Berlin via Hannover, and Prague to Budapest, direct. If you shift any around, say in the order of Berlin to Budapest, that can be done by night train too. Budapest is a hub for night trains...Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Munich, Krakow. If you have four full weeks, then I would consider the Eurail Youth Pass, 2nd class, since you qualify by being under 26.

Here are some tools, if you don't already know about them: www.seat61.com

www.bahn.com (German rail, good schedules for everywhere but only sells German tickets.)

www.skyscanner.com (one-way budget air fares in Europe.)

Any city official tourism office.

The odds are that a multi-city ticket across the Atlantic will be a better deal than a simple round trip when you factor in the cost in time and money of getting back to the city where you first landed. Every change of city uses up at least a half a day and some of your budget. For my tastes, I would visit either Prague or Budapest in eastern Europe. I agree about going to Barcelona's beaches and forget the French beach experience (pleasant though it can be.) Use the extra time to get to know the key destinations better (especially where to party, or party again.) One tip about Berlin, a wild city: Its airline connections are very limited, at least for trans-Atlantic flights, most of them requiring a change at a European gateway city. But many of its hotels are a bargain. If this is the first time you and your friends have taken a long trip together, it is also important to work out guidelines now, before you take off. My advice is to agree than anyone can go off on her own, and can choose a different activity than the group. Also carefully work out how joint expenses will be paid. Togetherness can be over-rated when there's more than two involved.

You should be able to get some cheap fares from New York. Open jaw will keep you from backtracking. Davids plan is great. You are college students, the long train rides will be used to catch up on sleep. Stay in hostels. They are a great resource for talking to other travelers and seeing what are the best places to go, whether other hostels or bars or cities. With a rail pass you can change your itinerary if need be.

This is awesome! Great advice. We are thinking of one of the two below (thanks, David!!). The reason being that it is cheapest to fly into Madrid, Barcelona and Spain. So using open jaw booking we could do international flights for the below options for about 550. Thoughts?

Option 1: Fly in to Madrid (3N) 2.5hrs by train to Barcelona (4N) Fly to Budapest (3N) 6.5hrs by train to Prague (3N) 4.5hrs by train to Berlin (4N) 6.5hrs by train to Amsterdam (3N) 3.5hrs by train to Paris (4N) Fly out of Paris

Option 2: Fly into Barcelona Barcelona (4N) Fly to Munich (3N) Train to Budapest (3N) Train to Prague (3N) Train to Berlin (3N) Train to Amsterdam (3N) Train to Paris (4N) Fly out of Paris

Leave time for a stop at the caviar bar at CDG airport.

And the togetherness advice is also golden. Have a daily meet-up point, or if someone ones to go elsewhere for a night or more, have a plan for how group expenses are taken care of.

In addition to all this good info, you might find it helpful to check out: reddit.com/r/backpacking... a website for travelers in your age group. My son (26) used it for his recent 3 wk trip to Asia. Your trip sounds great!

I would choose the Madrid option over Munich, mostly as a personal preference, but Munich > Budapest is a 7 hour trip as opposed to Madrid > Barcelona of 2.5 hours. FYI, you do have a night train option for Budapest to Prague. It's an experience everyone should try, and can save you accomm $$ as well as give you extra daylight hours at your destination.

Traveling After College Graduation: Why, Where, & How to Pay for It

by Hailey Hirst November 15, 2022

Should I travel after college? YES! Traveling for a year after college won't just give you a taste of the real world. It'll give you a whole dang feast.

person with a red backpack standing on a misty mountain peak

Here's why you should (and how to!) travel after college graduation.

So you just finished college, and you’re about to take the next step forward, moving from the life of a student into the life of a professional. Maybe you studied abroad, maybe you didn’t, but you know you want to seek out adventure travel . You think it might be best to establish a career first, and then travel later.

You’ll be more stable, you’ll have more money, you’ll know who you are, and you’ll appreciate travel adventures more because you’ve got things “figured out.” Good idea, right? Wrong!

All those things that make life worth living like sunrises and sunsets, new friends made during late nights around campfires, and in neon lit city streets, worn backpacks, stamped passports, and journals bursting with notes from adventures .

That’s what you find in adventure travel, and you shouldn’t wait to seek it. Although counter-intuitive as a first step into a career, traveling as a recent grad is the perfect time to go for many reasons. Read on to learn the reasons for traveling after college graduation.

Why consider traveling after college graduation?

If you're still on the fence about whether or not to travel after graduation, you've come to the right corner of the internet. Here are compelling reasons to help you decide your next step:

1. You’re Not Tied Down.

You probably don’t have kids or pets to worry about. You might be living with your parents again (normal in this economy) or with a friend or two in an apartment, so you most likely don’t have a mortgage to pay off yet.

You likely haven’t nailed down your dream job, and traveling before you start a new, maybe serious job allows you freedom to explore the world without the time constraints of vacation days.

2. You Can Be Selfish with Your Money.

You most likely aren’t concerned about saving for a house yet, or retirement, or your children’s college educations. What little money you have is all yours to stretch as far as you can across the globe.

3. You're Able-Bodied & Resilient.

It’s good to be quick on your feet while traveling. You can handle the stress of lost luggage or missed connections. You won’t mind sleeping in an uncomfortable hostel bunk bed.

Well maybe you’ll mind, but your body will function just fine all the same. You can stay up late and wake up early and walk, swim, hike, and climb all day. You have the energy and drive to seek adventure.

4. You Can Make Connections.

two people walking barefoot in sand dunes

Making new, like-minded friends is a major perk to traveling after college!

You want to meet new people, and your freshly finished university days have you well practiced in the social arts. Hostels are hot spots for young travelers, and many times you can band together with bunkmates to share in adventures. You might just make a lifelong friend, which may lead to future world travels.

Maybe you’ll meet a guy from Sweden in Australia and next summer he’ll show you around Stockholm and introduce you to a friend who’s moving to the city where you live. Connections are important, and who knows, maybe they’ll be the path to that dream job!

5. You Can See a New Perspective.

When you decide to get a backpack and buy a one-way ticket to anywhere, adventure travel will help you put things in perspective. No matter where you go, you will see things. You will see that people live differently than you do.

They eat different things, they talk differently, they wear different clothes, but they are all human and they are proud of where they come from, and meeting them will inevitably change you.

You might want to live differently after your eyes are opened by other cultures and places. When you get home, maybe you’ll be more inclined to live, work, or travel abroad again. It might change your professional goals.

Maybe the meaningful work you yearn to do will come from an idea sparked by someone, or something, or somewhere that you haven’t yet found.

6. You Can De-Stress.

traveler walking down a city street

Say goodbye to normal life and live something more exciting!

What traveling will do, most definitely, is help you to see your life in context of the whole world. You will see that petty problems don’t matter in the scheme of things. You will know, in some abstract inarticulate way, more about life itself. It might not be a big revelation, but while you are out in the world, you are absorbing everything and cogs are turning within you.

By choosing to travel while you are young, your horizons will be broadened rather than bogged down by the stresses of being ‘successful’ at home immediately after college. Plus, you probably need a break. You just earned a degree after working hard and studying for years. Wouldn’t some time to explore the world, and to reflect on what you just accomplished be pretty nice?

How to travel after college with no money

person with a coat and backpack standing on a rock by the ocean

Did you know there are ways to travel the world and make money?

It's not easy, but there are ways that you can figure out how to travel after college with no money. Follow these tips and advice to get as close as possible to traveling after graduation for free.

1. Go somewhere affordable on a budget.

Don't set up your new life after college in a place like Tokyo or anywhere near Scandinavia. Research general costs of living and currency exchanges to ensure that you find a destination where your dollar and relative buying power is strong.

Avoid destinations with high costs of living—especially high start up costs—other traveling after college graduation will just be another exercise in going into debt.

2. Apply for scholarships.

If you are game for having a more structured experience when you travel after college (rather than roughing it a la solo backpacker), then you will have more finance options also available to you.

We have an entire article on Scholarships for Studying Around the World , and a portion of our website dedicated entirely to Travel Abroad Scholarships . It's not instant free money, but it's a start!

3. Set up a FundMyTravel account.

Crowdfunding has financed thousands of dreams, and with the right fore-thought and goal setting, you can easily get friends, family members, and your extended network on board with supporting your travels financially.

It's helpful to have intentions for your adventure beyond "getting drunk in a new city every three days," so think hard about what you want to accomplish—a travel program can help—and then invite everyone to support you.

4. Do a work exchange.

How to travel after college with no money? Work exchange programs! These opportunities are an awesome way to alleviate the financial stressors of paying for travel after college. In exchange for a few hours of work every day, you essentially "earn your keep."

While this varies from opportunity to opportunity, it oftentimes covers some meals and room and board. Becoming an au pair is another alternative to work exchanges that can be a great option if you dream of learning a second language of your own or developing meaningful, serious, and deep relationships with people from another culture.

5. Digital nomadism.

Here are the most popular digital nomad jobs hiring right now . Work and travel might not sound like as much fun as plain ol' travel, but getting to travel long term because you don't have as much money stresses does sound like fun (no?).

5 great European trips for college seniors

From buzzy nightlife scenes to hot-air balloon adventures, there’s a trip for all interests..

 Amber P. Lewis

Graduating from college is a massive milestone—and what better way to celebrate this special occasion than to take a vacation in Europe? We’ve put together a list of five of the best trips for college seniors in Europe, from a food-filled tour of Spain’s capital city to a spot known for its hot-air balloon rides. This moment deserves to be celebrated, and there are options for all interests.

Aerial of the Gran Vía at dusk, Madrid

A city known for art, food, and soccer, Madrid has no shortage of things to do. From tapas at El miniBar to the modern art at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia and lively Real Madrid CF games, the city is perfect for college grads looking to surround themselves in celebratory energy. The best part? The city can be experienced on any budget. Get around using Madrid’s excellent public transportation system, which offers easy access to museums like the Museo del Prado . Pro tip: this iconic museum offers free entry Monday to Saturday between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sundays and public holidays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.—just make sure you line up early.

On the flip side, Madrid is a great destination for Michelin-star dining. If you have a larger budget, book a table at Coque for tasting menus expertly paired with hand-curated wines. Stay at Central Palace Madrid for an economical yet upscale setting overlooking the Plaza de Oriente .

Cappadocia, Turkey

Girl pointing to hot-air balloon over Cappadocia, Turkey

Drawn to places with scenic views, centuries of history, and tons of personality? Consider Cappadocia . Known for its cave dwellings, cone rock formations, and hot-air balloons, vacationing here is not unlike dropping yourself into the pages of a fairytale. Celebrate your graduation with a hot-air balloon ride for a bird’s-eye view of Cappadocia’s unique landscape and enjoy a champagne toast to finish. Not a fan of heights? Watch the hot-air balloons from a nearby rooftop while the sun rises for an Instagrammable photo op, or book a quad safari tour to see the magical landscape and historic fairy chimneys up close. At night, catch a Turkish night show with unlimited food and alcoholic beverages, folk and belly dancing, and a whirling dervish ceremony. Make sure to spend a few nights in a cave house, like the Cappadocia Cave Suites , which is built inside a fairy chimney.

Rowhomes in Amsterdam at dawn

Amsterdam boasts a lively nightlife and progressive urban scene that rivals many big cities around the world. Take your pick of the wide variety of bars and nightclubs in Rembrandtplein —or head straight to Encore , home to the city’s hip-hop and R&B scene, in Melkweg. But be sure to save energy for daylight hours too, where there’s just as much to explore. Make time for a scenic canal tour , historic museums like the Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum , and the Albert Cuyp Market , one of the largest street markets in Europe selling everything from fresh fruit to streetwear. Stay at the Hotel Not Hotel Amsterdam , where each room has a different theme. Located a short 800 feet from Kinkerstraat, a street known for its many shops and restaurants, it’s the perfect place to set as your home base.

View of Berlin Cathedral from the Spree river at sunset

Often considered Europe's capital of cool, Berlin has a vibrant creative community and a buzzy nightlife scene. The Holiday Inn Berlin City Center East Prenzlauer Berg ’s central location makes it easy to enjoy this colorful city, with miles of dynamic graffiti-covered buildings, underground techno clubs, and hundreds of beer gardens. Love to shop? You’ll also find the largest department store in Europe in Berlin: the Kaufhaus des Westens , or KaDeWe. But Berlin is also more than shopping, beer, and graffiti. This city has survived lifetimes of hardships, from war to financial collapse. There are several cultural centers to learn about its history, like the Memorial of the Berlin Wall , the Jewish Museum Berlin , and the Stasimuseum .

Porto, Portugal

Ships along the Douro River in Porto, Portugal

It may be the second-largest city in Portugal, but Porto has maintained its medieval small town charm. Vacationing in Porto means exploring the riverbanks of old city Porto Ribeira , enjoying a cruise on the Douro River , and indulging in delicious pastries, like the pastel de nata—a Portuguese egg custard tart, often eaten for breakfast. In fact, there are countless ways to adventure in and around the city, including bar-hopping where the locals drink (like Aduela ), taking a day trip to the beach, or catching the sunset from the Dom Luis I bridge . Stay at the centrally located Ribeira do Porto Hotel keep yourself near all the action.

College Graduation Trip Ideas

college graduation trips to europe

Graduation is right around the corner, and your student may be dreaming about taking a trip to celebrate.

The time between graduation and the start of that first “real job” or graduate school is ideal for traveling, and a trip can be an opportunity for personal growth as well as a reward for years of hard work in college. After Amelia graduated from Bridgewater State in Massachusetts, she used her family’s flight points to help pay for airfare along with graduation gift money to finance a trip to Europe. Amelia said, “I learned more about myself in eighteen days alone in foreign countries than I did in four years of undergrad!”

Whether for an epic road trip with friends, or a solo backpacking experience in a distant part of the world, your student may have been dreaming and saving for a while — or perhaps you’ll surprise them with plane tickets, gas money or the whole trip.

Whatever your approach, we have tips and ideas to ignite some travel inspiration!

When Is the Best Time to Travel?

College graduation trip ideas

Summer is a popular season to travel and you will find more expensive flights on peak summer dates ranging from June 24 to August 7. CheapAir’s study suggests that the closer you get to late August and September, the better chance you have of booking more affordable airfare.

Graduation Trip Ideas in the United States

The United States is packed full of gems for your soon-to-be graduate to explore: historical monuments, national parks, miraculous waterfalls, incredible architecture and much more. If your student isn’t sure where they want to go yet, we’ve researched popular destinations and polled recent college graduates on some of their favorite places.

FOR THE ADVENTUROUS SPIRIT

How about a road trip to visit a couple of America’s national parks? Summer is high tourist season, so your grad should be sure to book their camping spots or make lodging reservations in advance. If they take a trip out west, suggest these national parks.

college graduation trips to europe

  • Yosemite, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, encompasses some of the finest hiking and climbing in America. Your grad will want to check out iconic Half Dome (watch the Oscar-winning documentary  Free Solo  first!) as well as Yosemite’s tallest waterfall,  Bridalveil Fall .
  • Yellowstone National Park sprawls across parts of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho and is known for its wildlife and amazing geothermal features.  Rough Guides has tips  for how to avoid the summer crowds.
  • The Grand Canyon located in Arizona is 277 miles long, about 18 miles wide, and up to one mile deep. It is an absolutely breathtaking experience. It’s pretty hot in the summer, but might be a perfect destination if your grad will plan an autumn trip.
  • Take a trip to  Glacier National Park and hike any part of the 700 miles of trails in Northwestern Montana.
  • Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming is a remarkable place to adventure with gorgeous terrain featuring mountains, lakes, rivers and forests as well as diverse wildlife.

Useful tool:  Download the  AllTrails app . It’s free and hosts over 60,000 trails for hiking, trail running and biking. It is extremely user-friendly and makes navigating in an unfamiliar place simple. Users can filter length, rating and difficulty level for a custom experience when embarking on their adventure.

DISCOVER A NEW CITY

  • New York — “the Big Apple” — is an urban experience like none other, full of bustling city lovers, lively nightlife, incredible architecture, world-class art museums and of course Broadway. Your grad won’t want to miss the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building and Ellis Island; here’s  a fun blog to share with them so they can also be sure to discover the “real” Manhattan off the beaten path. Instagram is also a great tool for finding the newest or most unique restaurants and things to do — check out New York Bucket List and the New York Foodguide . And don't forget about the subways and busses! Suggest they use the Transit app while getting around. It works just like a maps app, but with all the information you need for taking public transit to get there.
  • If your student has never visited our nation’s capital (especially if they majored in political science or government!), now is the time for a visit to Washington, D.C . Many attractions are within walking distance of each other: the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, free Smithsonian museums and more. They can rent a bike or kick back on a double-decker tour bus.

Graduation trip ideas in California

  • Boston, Massachusetts bustles with young, working professionals and will be sure to delight your grad. Popular activities include the Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall, Fenway Park (home of the Red Sox — be ready to sing “Sweet Caroline”!), the Boston Aquarium, guided Duck Tours — even whale watching!
  • Austin, Texas — known as the “Live Music Capital of the World” — is a fun, vibrant place to visit for people in their early twenties.
  • Seattle, Washington is a coastal city with a hip young vibe, and when the sun is out the views of Mount Rainier and the Olympic Range are breathtaking. Also, every person should visit Seattle’s original farmers market, Pike Place,   at least once.

Useful tool:  The  CityMappers app  is an efficient way to get a bird’s eye view of all the routes one can take to get from point A to B in a busy city. It helps locate the fastest route by subway, train, ferry, taxi, car share, bike share or walking.

SAND IN THEIR TOES

Maybe your graduate just wants to relax. Not a worry in the world if they look into these destinations!

college graduation trips to europe

  • Maui or Honolulu – Hawaii offers many options for beachy getaways and new cultural experiences, too. Aloha!
  • Diving, snorkeling, beaching, boating…there’s a ton to do in the  Florida Keys located off the southern coast of Florida .
  • Cape Hatteras National Seashore , North Carolina.  Visit the world’s tallest brick lighthouse !
  • Charleston, South Carolina is the oldest and largest city in the state. Rich with southern charm, beauty and culture, this beach town is a perfect vacation destination.
  • Laguna Beach in southern Orange County, California is a popular destination on the Pacific coast.

Graduation Trips Abroad

Here are useful apps to help them on their journey.

  • Whatsapp supplies secure, reliable messaging and free phone calls to help your student stay in touch with the family from anywhere in the world.
  • Trail Wallet is a great app for travelers keeping a keen eye on their daily budget and expenses. (Only available on the iOS)
  • Airbnb is a great option for locating rentals of private homes and affordable rooms, providing a different experience than traditional hotels or hostels.
  • XE currency,  a currency converter app , is extremely helpful when traveling from one country to the next.
  • TripLingo is a very useful tool for international travelers. It includes a voice translator that instantly helps you communicate in another language, a common phrase book to help with casual and formal speech, learning language tools, a safety feature, tip calculator and more.

STAYING ON BUDGET WHILE TRAVELING ABROAD

Unless your grad can find good hotel or Airbnb deals, hostels are great for travelers on a budget who don’t mind shared spaces. It is also a convenient way for your student to meet other young people from all around the globe and learn travel tips — and even make new friends to venture with! Many hostels post reviews online with insights into safety, cleanliness and price.

RailEurope  and  EUrail  offer deals for students who want to country hop in Europe. If your student prefers to travel by plane, they can find inexpensive flights on  Ryanair  or  EasyJet .

Meals can end up being a large expense, but travelers don’t always have to eat out! Although an authentic restaurant experience can be wonderful from time to time, your student should take advantage of local food markets — less expensive than restaurants plus fun to visit from a cultural perspective.

Trust in Your Student

For many new college graduates, a trip is a rite of passage and a way to test their newfound independence and freedom. Parents are sometimes uncomfortable when their students embark on a journey that takes them farther away from home than they’ve ever been but it’s important to honor their choice if they can make it work financially and with their other responsibilities. Be sure to discuss safety measures and logistics with them, but also trust in your student to plan their trip and deal with the obstacles that may come up along the way.

Relish this moment in time. Remember college move-in day all those years ago? What a long way you’ve both come. Your grad’s journey could not have been possible without your love and encouragement from the start.

Tips & Tricks

Graduation Trips: Top Ideas and Places to Visit

Psychology tells us that receiving the gift of experience will result in more – and longer-lasting – joy and happiness than receiving a gift that’s an item. While material things don't last forever, the memories you can create on a trip with your recent graduate will stick with them for the rest of their life. And if you want to deliver the news in something you can wrap, start by gifting your graduate some durable new luggage that will carry them through all of their adventures.

Related: Shopping on a budget? Grab these luggage  gifts for less than $250 .

Bonding trips don't have to be long or include extensive backpacking through Europe (although that's certainly an exciting option). Below, we offer a wide range of trips that run the gamut of length and adventure.

Top Graduation Trip Ideas

The best trips for recent graduates should consider their personality and family dynamics. They’ve worked hard, accomplished much, and now deserve a break before entering the next stage of life.

Grad Trips with the Fam – Ideally, family trips include places that please the whole crew. (Read up on  how to plan a family vacation to avoid mishaps). The more people traveling, the wider the range of available activities should be. As you consider a graduation gift for your senior, think about family-friendly trips like theme parks, cruises, or beach destinations with boardwalks. Throw in a new set of luggage to remind your graduate that this trip is for them.

Weekend Trips for Grads – Sometimes, long, elaborate trips just aren’t doable. The best trips of any length are customized to the individual. Does your graduating senior love the outdoors? A few days exploring the Grand Canyon, snow skiing, or learning to surf could be perfect for your adventure seeker. If your senior craves relaxation, a couple days at a spa or on a beach may hit the spot.

Head Abroad with the Family – One of the best ways to better understand other cultures is to experience how different people live around the world. New shared experiences and discoveries build bonds and lasting memories. It will also give you and your family opportunities for conversation and banter for years to come.

Go it Alone – If your graduate is very independent, maybe a solo trip is in order. Letting your kids travel and experience the world on their own helps them learn about other ways of life, which also helps them figure out who they want to be in the world. Solo travel lets them explore at their own pace, meet others, and do the things that interest them most.

Affordable Graduation Trips in the USA

Travel doesn’t have to be elaborate (or expensive). Some of the best places for a senior trip can be done on a budget. Focus on planning ahead, creating memories, and leaning into experiences.

Drive There  –  A cross-country trip can be daunting, but sometimes the adventure can be all about getting there.  Plan for three to four hours per day in the car, and spend the rest of the time exploring new areas.

Book a House  –  Skip the hotel, and book a place with at least a small kitchenette.  Eating out is one of the most expensive parts of travel; if you cook even some of your own meals, you’ll save a bundle.

Find the Hostel  – If your grad is headed to Europe, one of the best ways to experience the trip and meet fellow travelers is to book low-cost hostels.

Use Rewards Miles  – Accumulate rewards points on your credit card and redeem them for flights or hotel rooms. Rooms are often drastically cheaper with points instead of cash.

Plan in Advance  – Don't plan at the last minute when prices are at a premium. Prices can be nearly half if you plan and pay in advance.

Travel Off-Season  – You can give the gift at graduation but then take the trip when tourist seasons have died down.

Top Destinations for New Graduates

Need a few more places for those graduation trip ideas? We gathered up five awesome domestic destinations and 5 international destinations that will spark a love for travel and immerse your grad in different cultures.

Hawaii  – There’s a reason Hawaii is a popular destination for travelers. The big island and its sister islands offer consistent weather year round, pristine beaches, and loads of local food and entertainment.

New York City – If your grad hasn't been to the Big Apple, the summer after graduation may be the perfect time to go. The world's cultural, financial, and media capital is always bustling with activity and event.

Alaska –The Last Frontier should be on every bucket list for those who love nature. Experience towering mountains, vast landscapes, and wildlife - right in town. Salmon fishing in the summer is a wildly popular trip activity.

Puerto Rico – No need to break out the passport to visit this Caribbean Island. Beautiful beaches and the unique culture of Puerto Rico get you the feel of international travel without traveling internationally.

Nashville, TN   – A must-see destination for any music lover. Nashville’s Honky Tonk Highway consists of several blocks of music venues pumping tunes into the street all day and into the night.

Italy – Italy, steeped in culture and history, is an excellent place for any graduating student to visit. From the Colosseum in Rome, to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, to the canals of Venice, there are endless wonders to discover.

Switzerland – The Alps contain beauty many other mountain ranges can only hope to mimic. Discovering the Swiss Alps in person turns the iconic images of these peaks into lasting memories.

New Zealand – With a more temperate climate than Australia and sheep that outnumber people six to one, you can discover the land where the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed.

Ho Chi Minh City – One of the top travel destinations for 2023 (and undoubtedly subsequent years to come), Ho Chi Minh City ( one of Travelpro’s destination spotlights ) in Vietnam has so much to do and see; you'll likely be back for another trip .

Peru – Heading into South America, Peru has incredible mountains and rich culture. For the adventuring graduate, a hike to Machu Picchu will be remembered forever.

From a weekend trip that's a half day's drive away, to a two-week excursion around the world, the memories you create will be based on the planning and inspiration you put into your graduate’s trip.

Make your gift extra special with luggage that lasts. Peruse  our gift guides for travelers to find the perfect fit.

Great Inspiration for Graduation Trips

The gift we can give our graduates—and the gift they’ll give back to us

Graduation trips are among the most popular family trips we see here at WendyPerrin.com, and we agree that an academic achievement deserves to be marked with a fun, memorable—and yes, sometimes even educational—experience. To provide inspiration for your own travels with your favorite grad this year, we’ve looked back at the graduation trips arranged by our WOW List destination experts  that have most delighted your fellow travelers.

Portugal: “The destinations and route they planned—from Lisbon to the Alentejo region and the West Region—were perfect.”

“This was our first trip using a recommended Wendy Perrin trip planner. We travelled to Portugal March 8th—March 15th, 2024. It was a special trip to celebrate our son’s graduation from college. Our trip was planned by Goncalo and Joanna. WOW! What an amazing trip they planned for us. The accommodations that they chose for us were fantastic! Very unique and customer oriented. The destinations and route they planned—from Lisbon to the Alentejo region and the West Region—were perfect. Our driver, Sandru, was amazing and he made sure everything was taken care of when we reached our destinations. (He also knew our itinerary and was always able to answer questions.) Sandru went above and beyond to make our trip very special.

We had a wonderful cooking class and gastronomic tour with Lara in Lisbon and even attended a Benefica Football game. In the Alentejo region we experienced an outstanding lunch with a wine pairing, horseback ride, cork factory and hikes. In the West Region, a full day tour which included Obidos, Nazre, and Alcobaca. The details were taken care of for us, from tours to restaurant reservations, it was the best trip I have ever been on. I can’t wait to plan our next trip with a Wendy Perrin recommended trip planner.” —Lori Bentley

“Our January trip to Paris was for our daughter’s college graduation. She was interested in fashion, food, and the Louvre. Let’s start by how incredibly smooth our airport arrival was! Upon exiting the aircraft, we were whisked away by Mohammad, who led us through customs, helped us with our luggage, and delivered us to our driver. I bet we saved two hours not having to wait in the line at customs.

Jennifer , our trip planner, did a great job planning our tours and making our dining reservations! We were very impressed with each tour guide: our private half-day tour of the Louvre could not have been better! We loved our croissant-making class and our chef was fabulous. We were pleasantly surprised with our tour of the Dior museum—so unexpected and maybe one of our most favorite things. We had the museum to ourselves and our guide was fantastic! Jennifer secured a fashion expert who took us to neighborhood boutiques featuring up and coming Parisian designers, and this was a real treat! We loved meeting the shop owners, and we felt like locals shopping for the afternoon.

Each and every restaurant reservation that Jennifer procured provided the best table in the restaurant with amazing views of the Eiffel Tower. One of the restaurants surprised us with a sparkler in my daughter’s dessert, which was so fun.” —Kim Brown

Romania: “Since the trip was last-minute (before my daughter began her new career as a RN), and it was the height of tourist season, we wanted to pick a destination that was less traveled…”

Legendary Bran (Dracula) historical castle of Transylvania, Brasov region, Romania, Eastern Europe

“I traveled to Romania on a last-minute graduation trip with my daughter, Amelia, in August 2023. We have done numerous trips with Wendy’s WOW List agents before and knew that finding an agent through Wendy was the only way to go. Even the destination of our trip was inspired by articles written by Wendy.

Since the trip was last-minute (before my daughter began her new career as a RN), and it was the height of tourist season, we wanted to pick a destination that was less traveled. We chose Romania, and Wendy matched us up with Raluca and Ioana. Important to us was connecting with the local people and understanding the country.

Raluca and Ioana set us up with a local guide, Tavi, whose personality matched well with us, which was a good thing since we drove around Romania for 10 days with him. We started in Bucharest, which was great for my daughter to learn what can happen to a country if you vote in a narcissist authoritarian as a leader and to understand what life was like under the latter parts of communist ruling. We had a university history professor give us a tour of an apartment frozen in time from the 1980s under communist rule. We enjoyed wonderful restaurants, an amazing art exhibit, and historical sites in the city.

In Transylvania we enjoyed visiting the Cris Bethlen Castle. It was particularly fun for us since one of our favorite horror movies, The Nun, was shot there. A local man who lives in town jumped in and gave us a detailed tour, including side stories on the actors during the filming. We went on an amazing mountain bike ride (about 20 miles) primarily in the hills and forests with some fun single track as well. The mountain bike guide had helped to build the trails, which will eventually connect a large portion of Transylvania for mountain bike tours.

We saw wonderful fortressed churches and cities throughout our trip, including the beautiful Sighisoara. Always enjoying them without crowds and with a random local who had the keys to let us in the church or describe some interesting tidbit of history through our guide as the interpreter.

We met a local weaver whose family had been doing traditional weaving for generations and who rescued a loom headed for destruction. We enjoyed a visit with a local herbalist whose herb garden was expansive and whose knowledge of remedies was sought out throughout the area. Here we enjoyed a dinner in her home, again understanding her story and her life and sharing ours. We enjoyed seeing the UNESCO site Viscri, supported by King Charles, and enjoyed the views from the fortressed church over the rolling hills.

We moved on to Brasov. Here we had a private tour of Bran Castle and had the opportunity to climb into the highest turret to view the mountain pass that the lookouts would use in centuries past. When we expressed interest in a hike, Tavi took us up a mountainside where he had helped a friend build a cabin. We met one of his friends, a local shepherd, and discussed bears threatening his flock.

Bottom line our visit was filled with unique experiences where we connected with the people of Romania and attempted to understand their stories. Romania is a beautiful, relatively undiscovered country with rich medieval history and more recent history of the rise and fall of communism. It is not as restored as other places in Western Europe, but its beauty, its history, and its people are wonderful to experience. The smaller crowds allow for a much more enjoyable visit than other European countries.” —Theresa Boone

South Africa & Botswana: “My two children and I celebrated my son’s college graduation by taking a trip for the ages!”

Lynn Casper

Thomas Casper celebrated his college graduation with a safari. Here, he’s atop Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Photo: Traveler Clare Casper

“Just back from South Africa and Botswana! My two children and I celebrated my son’s college graduation by taking a trip for the ages! We worked with Christian from Julian ‘s office, who put together an itinerary that included places we had not even considered. Five days in South Africa included the awe-inspiring Grootbos Nature Preserve at the bottom of the continent. We explored ancient caves, went whale watching, hiking and thoroughly enjoyed the unforgettable cuisine at Grootbos! We loved our guide Hosea who gave us such in-depth history and cultural insight on the area. It was a small gesture, but my kids really appreciated Hosea taking them into a local market in Cape Town’s Bo-Kapp neighborhood to enjoy a mid-day snack.

After a day touring and hiking on the magnificent Table Mountain, we set off to Botswana for 6 days at 3 different safari camps. Each camp was in a different ecosystem, which was something we never would have considered and were so appreciative of Christian to plan in that manner. I knew I would see the animals but did not expect to learn so much from the guides at each camp. The magnificent birds were also an unexpected surprise. The delicious food and lovely staff will never be forgotten and really made the trip our favorite so far!

Kudos to Christian for setting up this amazing experience!” —Lynn Casper

Switzerland: “We booked a trip with our 18- and 21-year-old children to celebrate graduation and be outdoors as much as possible…”

Andy Shafran

Andy Shafran and family spelling out OHIO on top of Mt. Jungfrau.

“Switzerland was a beautiful country and our active hiking, kayaking, paragliding trip was exactly what we were looking for. We booked a trip with our 18- and 21-year-old children to celebrate graduation and be outdoors as much as possible. Nina and her staff helped us build an itinerary that maximized the experiences and minimized the hassle and travel time. We spent two days in Zurich/Rhine Falls, three days in Grindelwald, and three days in Lucerne. There is so much to do that we felt we could have stayed an extra week just in these three locations.

Our major interest was hiking, and we had a guided tour up Mt. Grindelwald first, which included a gondola ride up and a Trottibike ride down (highly, highly recommended). Then we took the train to the Jungfrau and even though it was pricey for that part of the trip, well worth it for the views and incredible Alpine experience. Thumbs up: Rhine Falls, Trümmelbach Falls, Aare Gorge hike, Lake Brienz kayak trip, and our full-day peak-to-peak hike on Mt. Rigi where we ate lunch at Berghaus Unterstetten on the side of the mountain with incredible views and good food.

All three hotels we stayed in were unique, terrific locations, and have fun quirks, such as the private funicular car that takes you up from Lake Lucerne to the Art Deco Hotel Montana….” —Andy Shafran

Japan: “I wanted to take my youngest daughter to Japan to celebrate her high school graduation…”

“I wanted to take my youngest daughter to Japan to celebrate her high school graduation. Scott planned a fabulous and varied itinerary, and our guides were fantastic: They were very flexible to accommodate our interests and energy levels and very understanding of how a teenager would like to travel.

Scott arranged several special experiences based on the relationships he has formed. We had a cooking lesson with an amazing woman in her home, a fascinating dinner at a club with geishas, and a calligraphy lesson with an excellent teacher. We both loved Studio Ghibli and the Monkey Park.

Scott’s choice of hotels was wonderful. We slept so well every night, particularly at our ryokan. The Mandarin Oriental serves a fantastic breakfast buffet. The Ritz-Carlton was very luxurious (and yes—we did see Leonardo Di Caprio there). We were particularly fortunate that the cherry blossoms came out when we got there and we got to experience the beauty of the season. Throughout the trip, I was able to sit back and relax and enjoy everything because of Scott’s careful planning and knowledge of Japan. I would absolutely use him again and recommend him. I have been a fan of Wendy’s since her Condé Nast days. This is now my second special trip with her experts, and I plan on more. The level of professionalism is exceptional.” —Patricia Klein

Austria: “I can only describe the experience as life-affirming…”

“We just returned from a 14-day family trip in Austria planned by Gwen . I can only describe the experience as life-affirming. The official occasion for the trip was my son’s graduation from high school and sending him off to music school in the fall, so we had a heavy musical focus, but there was truly something for everyone in the family. We toured palaces and cathedrals in Vienna, experienced local food, watched the Lipizzaner stallions perform and had a private tour of the stables.

We moved on to the Wachau Valley for wine tasting and breathtaking Danube scenery, then visited the abbeys of Melk and Stift-Admont. In Salzburg, we soaked up the music festival, saw the fortress and countless Sound of Music film locations, attended a Mozart opera, a Vienna Philharmonic concert, and a world-class string quartet. We learned to make apple strudel and Salzburg Nockerl, and visited the charming lake district outside Salzburg. We rounded out our trip with several days in Innsbruck and a final train ride to Munich, where we celebrated my son’s birthday at a beer hall and caught our flight home.

Gwen was helpful and responsive and understood my family’s diverse needs. She steered us away from tourist traps and embraced our interest in some off-the-beaten-path locations. She suggested lovely boutique hotel experiences and guides with extraordinary depth of knowledge of their cities.” — Katherine Stadler

Italy: “Our eight-day food tour was requested by our 21-year-old son who was graduating from university…”

“Our eight-day food tour of Italy was requested by our 21-year-old son, who was graduating from university. Milan was the starting point, next was Bologna to learn about the renowned foods of the region, and then a repeat visit to Florence—and we absolutely loved everything Maria planned. The drivers, guides, food tours, wine tasting, cooking class were all impeccable. In Milan, when our guide found out our son loved fashion, she made a call to a fashion designer, and we were able to meet with the designer. We spent an hour-plus speaking with him, trying on his designs, and buying some of his pieces.

In Bologna our guide took us on a delicious food tasting that culminated in copious amounts of prosciutto, hams, cheeses, bread, balsamic vinegar, wine. Our all-day food tour through Parma and Emilia-Romagna was incredible, as was the private wine tasting where we sat in the cellar with the vineyard owner for more than two hours, tasting food and wine pairings. The vineyard owner then asked our driver to detour us through the medieval village of Fontanellato, to view the castle and moat and to indulge in gelato.” —Deb Lurie

“We recently traveled to British Columbia to celebrate our son’s high school graduation. On Wendy Perrin’s recommendation, we contacted Sheri , who suggested that, given our time constraints, we limit our visit to Whistler and Tofino. That proved to be an excellent recommendation which allowed us to enjoy our vacation without being rushed. Our son wanted to mountain bike on Whistler/Blackcomb and truly enjoyed it.

Sheri suggested other activities which kept the rest of us active while our son spent the day on the mountain. Her recommendation that we stay at the Four Seasons Whistler was great. It’s a beautiful hotel with great staff and a wonderful breakfast. We enjoyed our time in Tofino as well; Sheri’s recommendations for lodging, food, and activities were perfect for us.” —John Masko

“This was a special trip to Peru for my niece just graduating from high school. She is about to study marine biology in college, so Marisol steered us toward the right Amazon basin area we hadn’t even considered. My husband, niece, and I just returned yesterday from Peru and wanted to send a HUGE GRACIAS to Marisol and her crew for making this trip one of a lifetime! There’s no way I ever could have constructed such a wonderful journey on my own. For sure, it was packed, but we came back feeling we’d seen such a diversity in Peru.

It was a perfect balance of wildlife, culture, adventure and a bit of relaxation. And although the weather was terrible during our one-day Inca Trail hike, with rain and clouds obscuring Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate, we still wouldn’t change a thing . I will of course recommend and tell everyone I know to use Marisol—and to once again trust a Wendy Perrin specialist. Over the years, I have used and vetted many of Wendy’s travel specialists —and, no doubt, Marisol and her team are top of the list.” —Jon Paul Buchmeyer

“My son was graduating from Harvard’s Kennedy School with a degree in public policy, and his interest is Central Asia, so as a graduation present we took him to Uzbekistan. Not only would I recommend Uzbekistan as a travel destination, but I would highly recommend Zulya to anyone planning a trip there. She arranged for a wonderful guide to accompany us throughout the country; our guide stayed with us day and night, shared meals and her culture, and helped us navigate a very foreign language. Zulya even arranged for us to have lunch with her family in Bukhara. It was amazing. Her mother taught my son how to make Plov. The lunch was a true feast, with about 20 family members. After lunch we all got up and danced together. It was an experience my wife, son, daughter-in-law, and I will cherish forever. ” —Ron Klausner
