Bistrot de la tour Eiffel

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

A great French café with an extremely varied menu. The food is served attentively and to a good quality. I understand you pay for the location (the restaurant has a view of the Eiffel Tower view) but, for the price point, I would expect a... larger portion size. More

The food was good, it is overpriced but you have a lovely view of the Eiffel Tower and the location is great so it is to be expected. We were served by Amouri and he was very polite and welcoming and provided great service throughout.... The service was very quick and he made a lot of effort to make sure we had a nice experience. More

Food was average here. Waiters seemed nice but we ended up being asked to tip. Tipping in Paris is not mandatory but instead, when we were billed, the waiter was right beside us with the credit card machine in hand, asking “how much do we... want to tip”. As a foreigner we felt compelled to give an amount on the spot. Having been in Paris for 3 days, we have never encountered anything like that. All the other restaurants we went to which had even better service, did not expect or demand for a tip in such a manner. More

I came with a friend of mine at 9pm and the waiter wasn’t very friendly. The waiter wasn’t very attentive, we finished the water bottle without anyone paying attention to us. They also mark 1€ extra fee for the orders after 7pm but the waiter... told us it didn’t apply. We ordered a croque-monsieur and a cesar salad. The croque-monsieur and fries were cold, the cheese on the croque-monsieur wasn’t melted at all.The sauce of the salad didn’t taste good, the chicken wasn’t good and the tomatoes weren’t fresh. The portion sizes were ridiculously small. A waste of money and time More

We had the l'entrecote and I had a St Germain Spritz (not on the menu) and when I got the bill, they priced my spritz the same as the steak. How ridiculous is that. I pointed it out to the waiter saying this must be... a mistake and I was told that was the price. I didn't have the energy to argue. But after that visit I looked up other reviews and a I read many that pricing doesn't seem consistent with what's on the menu. Shame. More

Shocking prices, service below average. We had already decided to eat in but didnt fancy anything heavy so we had a look inside and the croque monsieur looked nice. At 5.50 euros for 2 slices of cheap bread, with bechamel, cheap ham and gruyere we... thought it was OK. So we ordered that plus two coffee. We were ask if we wanted water so as in any other restaurants we had been previously we said yes please. The croque monsieur was below average and the coffee was the worse we have ever had, it was disgusting and served in craqued mugs. The bill came... And so did the shock. They add on 10 euros on the top of each croque monsieur for the privilege of sitting at a table where there isn't enough room to put 2 plates and not sure where the view of the Eiffel tower was. And they had charged us for the water. Some will say that's the way it is. However all the other restaurants where honest enough to explain the charging situation. Felt completely ripped off More

Ordered a cheese burger and bacon burger, not asked how we wanted them cooked when the couple next to us were asked. Burgers still mooing they were that raw and bloody. Asked for a tap water and got a 6€ bottle of still water?! We... were not looking for money off the bill, but when our meals were practically untouched due to being under cooked, I think the least they could do was knock money off but they didn’t. They just said sorry about the meat. Good view, reasonably friendly staff but overall would not recommend. More

Congrats on the worst experience in Paris! When visiting the french capital a degree of indifference/ snobbery from the occasional waiter having a bad day is expected, but when stopping at this place for a few drinks and maybe a snack before going to the... Eiffel Tower they were clear winners. We asked for a table for quatre and my wife was admonished by the tw*t of a waiter for mispronouncing quatre. He hissed ‘I don’t speak Spanish’ in retort. On ordering drinks the miserable idiot said ‘I must af snacks’ which i presume meant we must order food. I said we just wanted drinks to which he shrugged his shoulders and said ‘zen you must leave.’ So we went across the road and had drinks and snacks anyway in the very pleasant and friendly Cafe Gustav not 20 metres away. For a business clearly reliant on tourists, they obviously despise them with every fibre of their DNA. AVOID unless you enjoy being verbally abused by a failure of a waiter over a mediocre-looking croissant. More

Very poor experience I must say! We arrived for a drink at around 10pm and we were told to seat near the road, despite loads of other nicer tables available, the service was not great at all, it seemed that we were not welcomed and... the waiters kept telling us that it wasn’t his area! We ordered a Coca Cola and a glass of wine, price was 23.50 euros! An absolute disgrace, the toilets are absolutely awful and not cleaned the worst I have ever experienced! Would not recommend More

What seemed a nice spot with views on the Eiffel Tower, was a total scam. Rudest waiters ever. When the waiter came to take our order, he didn’t even want to repeat a sentence. Food en drinks were thrown on the table. Decent Bordeaux wine... but not what you expect for €30. Food totally not worth the money. €21,5 for a burger that you cant get for €4 a couple streets further at Mcdo. Anyway, that’s not the worst part. When we asked for the bill, the waiter added €20 for service. When we showed him the dessert menu, showing that taxes en service are included, he just made an angry sigh. Asking how we make our money,… Lukily we were with a group of 10 friends. He wanted to take the credit card and put it in himself so we could’t see the amount we were paying. Payment was probably also put through twice. Giving an update about this. Totally not worth the money and time. If you want to have a good time, buy some drinks and go to sit in the park ahead of the Eiffel Tower. Think twice before going here and read the other reviews… More

We asked for a table to drink something and after we sit down a waiter came to take the order and sent us away in a very rude mode because we didn't order anything to eat. They are really offensive and don't care about the... customers. Avoid it! Maleducati e offensivi nei confronti dei clienti. Da evitare assolutamente. Prezzi altissimi. More

Two club sandwiches and two children’s meals- €76. We ordered water, tap was not an option, but we were brought two bottles of water at €6 each. The food was ok, but it was not filling. For €76, I’d have expected to be full. Service... was at least quick so we didn’t have to wait for long. More

Poor for this price I expect better! The quality of the salad/lettuce was bad. It was clear that the lettuce was even already old (it was brown at the borders). Service was oriented to serve you quickly your meal and bring the bill soon: I... didn’t feel welcome and at ease. Not worth a visit, certainly for the price I expect better! More

We came after a tour in a Sena river for having something hot to drink and the service was horrible. We ordered a chocolate with baylis and we got a chocolate and the baylis separate as the kitchen forgot to put the baylis in the... Chocolate. It was a whole chaos when we try to put the baylis inside the Chocolate. No napkins... More

While this place gets bad reviews, tables were a little cramped, and the waiter asked us if we wanted to contribute to a tip (which we were happy to do) I had a great experience here. We needed to grab a quick dinner before our... tour of the Eiffel Tower and our waiter not only rushed our order for us but asked the tour guide who her personally knew to wait for us in case we were a little late. When the food came out it was excellent. Very happy with our experience. More

15 essential things to know about the Eiffel Tower

Wednesday 4 March 2020

Modified the 27/12/23

Who built the Eiffel Tower?

The Eiffel Tower was built from 1887 to 1889 by French engineer Gustave Eiffel , whose company specialized in building metal frameworks and structures. Gustave Eiffel is at the origin of many metallic works in Europe including the Porto Viaduct (Portugal), the Viaduct du Garabit (France) and the Budapest train station (Hungary).

Gustave Eiffel's company, that was located in Levallois Perret, very near Paris, France, also built the metal framework for another world-famous monument: the Statue of Liberty (New York, United States), designed by Auguste Bartholdi and offered to the United States as a gift from France to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence in 1886.

What kind of metal is the Eiffel Tower made of?

The Eiffel Tower is made of iron, not steel. The puddle iron that makes up the Eiffel Tower's structure came from the Pompey forges (East of France). The iron plates and beams produced through the puddling process were then preassembled in the Eiffel factories in Levallois Perret using rivets.

Finally, these pieces were taken to the Eiffel Tower construction site to be mounted. The prefab system is what allowed them to build the Eiffel Tower in a record time of 2 years, 2 months and 5 days.

Eiffel Tower structure

What is puddle iron?

The iron used to build the Eiffel Tower went through a refining process called puddling which eliminated the excess carbon when the ore was melted. Following this process, you obtain almost pure iron, which was, according to Gustave Eiffel at that time, the best and most robust of materials .

To protect it from corrosion, the iron is covered with a thick coat of paint that has to be renewed every 7 years. This repainting schedule was recommended by Gustave Eiffel himself and is still respected to date.

Why was the Eiffel Tower built?

The Eiffel Tower was built to be one the main attractions at the Paris World's Fair in 1889. That year, the World's Fair covered the entire Champ de Mars in Paris and its focus was the vast constructions in iron and steel that were the great industrial advancement of that time.

First called the 300-meter Tower, it soon took the name of the man who built it, Gustave Eiffel. The Tower opened to the public the same day as the World's Fair, on May 15, 1889.

Controversy over the Tower raged in the art world before and during its construction, but thanks to the audacity of its architecture and design, visitors and Parisians immediately fell under its charm and more than 2 million people toured it in the first year.

Universal Exhibition

Why is the Eiffel Tower famous ?

Since it was built and opened to the public in 1889, the Eiffel Tower instantly gained an international fame, as it was then the tallest building in the world. Its peculiar iron silhouette instantly traveled across the world in the newspapers. Built for the 1889 Exposition universelle (World's Fair) which took place in Paris, Gustave Eiffel's masterpiece aimed to show to the world the audacity of the French in the industrial and technological domains at the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution.

Being the first tower to reach the height of 1,000 feet - twice as any structure previously erected- the Eiffel Tower remained the highest building in the world during 40 years: until the Empire State Building was erected in New York in 1931!

Since 1889, the Eiffel Tower has always been opened for visits (except during the Word War 2 and the Covid-19 Pandemic): nearly 330 million visitors experienced the magic of the ascent -by elevator, or by the stairs - and discovered t8he magnificent view over Paris. Thanks to its universal power of attraction, it's the most visited monument in the world, with nearlty 7M visitors each year.

Is the Eiffel Tower the symbol France?

Its height and unique silhouette floating above the Paris landscape quickly made the Eiffel Tower one of the most popular attractions in Paris. The Tower's destiny is closely linked to that of the city of Paris, the capital of France and the Eiffel Tower's owner.

Since the beginning, the Eiffel Tower drew attention and served as the theatre for numerous events in the life of Paris and France: the grandiose fireworks on July 14 ("Bastille Day"), national-level events and large-scale sporting events.

The Tower can be seen from many and various points around Paris and its suburbs. It is photographed, drawn, filmed, and replicated in all kinds of circumstances. It is the monument photographed by all visitors to Paris. It naturally slipped into the role of symbolizing France in the collective imagination, in movies and graphic arts but also in literature and poetry.

What does the Eiffel Tower represent for French people?

For 130 years, the Eiffel Tower has been a powerful and distinctive symbol of the city of Paris, and by extension, of France. At first, when it was built for the 1889 World's Fair, it impressed the entire world by its stature and daring design, and symbolized French know-how and industrial genius.

A monument known around the world and a unique tourist attraction, the Eiffel Tower has loyally accompanied the people of Paris and its suburbs in their daily life. Rising to a height of 330 meters, it can be seen from all over Paris, and beyond, day and night until 1 am thanks to its lighting, the twinkling illumination at fixed times and its beacon that reaches out to 80 km, at 360 degrees.

The Eiffel Tower has witnessed and sometimes been an actor in important events, both sumptuous and tragic, in France's history. In its early years the Eiffel Tower was a productive laboratory for scientific experiments, in particular for wireless telegraphy, which saved it from destruction after the initially scheduled period of 20 years. The

Tower's destiny is also intimately linked to technical advancements in radio and television. The TDF installations and emitters at its summit broadcast all the digital terrestrial television and radio channels to the 12 million inhabitants of île de France.

Today, the Eiffel Tower's lights are turned off at night to honor the victims of dramatic events around the world. Even more than a symbol, it has become a means of expression for the city of Paris and all of France.

Why is the Eiffel Tower shaped like the A letter?

We have to first put the Eiffel Tower back in its historical context. It was two engineers who worked in Gustave Eiffel's company who, in 1884, imagined building a metal tower 300 meters high for the 1889 World's Fair in Paris.

These engineers were specialists in large-scale metallic structures like bridges, railway stations, viaducts, etc. It was only natural that the first sketch of the 300-meter Tower, issued from the calculations made by these two engineers, shows a pylon with 4 legs, each made of 4 robust beams linked together by open-web- joists that rise diagonally to meet at the summit.

All these shapes and curves simply recall the biggest viaducts built by Eiffel around the same time!

Is it illegal to take pictures of the Eiffel Tower at night?

There is nothing that says you can't take photos of the Eiffel Tower at night. Private individuals are free to take pictures of the Eiffel Tower at night for private use or to share on social networks, for example.

The situation is different for professionals: the Eiffel Tower's various illuminations (golden, sparkles, beacon, and illuminations for special events) are protected by copyright. Any nighttime pictures of the Eiffel Tower used by professionals for professional ends thus require previous authorization from SETE (Société d’Exploitation de la tour Eiffel - the Eiffel Tower management firm) and eventually the payment of usage rights.

Is the Eiffel Tower a work of art?

In the beginning, no one thought of the Tower as a work of art because it was the work of architects and engineers! The idea for a 300-meter-high tower came, at that time, as part of preparations for the 1889 World's Fair.

A competition was launched for the Fair, in 1886, to "study the possibility of raising an iron tower with a square base of 125 meters per side and a height of 300 meters." Gustave Eiffel's project, designed by the engineers Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier, and the architect Stephen Sauvestre , was chosen from among 107 other projects.
