Your tour will begin as you approach the Colosseum, exploring its architecture and discovering why the Emperor Vespasian took the unusual step of building an amphitheater within the city walls. With LivTours, you won’t have to wait in line for tickets, just a quick security check before you are standing inside the Colosseum, under the arches where spectators used to enter to experience the most brutal of entertainments.

This tour will take you to two restricted access areas inside the Colosseum: the underground area and the Arena Floor. You’ll understand what it was like for the gladiators underground in the semi-darkness, surrounded by terrified animals, waiting to be hoisted up to stand in front of the crowds. From the Arena Floor, you’ll have an incredible view of the entire amphitheater, as the gladiators did when they walked through the Gladiator Gate to the deafening roar of 50,000 cheering spectators.

And what about the people who came to watch the games at the Colosseum? In the part of the Colosseum open to the general public, you’ll visit the first tier and look down onto the arena, get your first glimpse of the Forum, and visit the Imperial box.

Outside, you’ll pass the Arch of Constantine and skip the line into the Roman Forum. With stories that educate and entertain, your guide will bring the complexity of more than 2000 years of history to life. You will see the most famous sites of the Forum, including the Arch of Titus, the Temple of the Vestal Virgins and the spot where Julius Caesar was cremated.

• Tickets for the Colosseum Underground are extremely limited and are only released twice: 30 days prior, and 7 days prior to the tour date. Upon booking tickets on their release dates, we will confirm your tour. In the event we cannot fulfill your booking request, we will contact you immediately to provide you with the option of either a full refund, or an alternative Colosseum tour with a refund of the difference in price.
• Access to the restricted areas of the Colosseum (Underground and Arena) may be shared among other participants in the LivTours exclusive entry slot. At times, for safety reasons, logistics, and traffic control, the group may be led by one guide. This choice is at the complete discretion of the Colosseum’s administration and security policy of that day in accordance with adequate safety measures. Please be aware that this is only for 30/40 minutes of the total duration of the tour. Our max 6 people policy is guaranteed for the remainder of the duration of the tour.

• WEATHER CONDITIONS: In extreme weather conditions, parts of the restricted areas may be closed for safety reasons by the Colosseum administration. Non-Refundable Entrance Fees

Due to recent ticket policy changes imposed by the Colosseum, this tour cost is fully refundable minus the priority access Colosseum entrance fees. Cancellations or modifications will exclude these entrance fees.

The guided tour of the Colosseum, including the hypogeum, was fascinating. Our guide Rebecca was both very knowledgeable and very pleasant and friendly, and her informed commentary enhanced the experience. It is not a cheap tour, but it was worth paying a higher price to be in a private group of just five people (maximum six) rather than following a red flag in a party of thirty or more. Particularly helpful was the use of radio receivers with an earpiece, enabling us to hear Rebecca chatting away without her having to shout over other people, and also enabling us to now and then disengage from the group by a few metres in order to take photos without missing any of the commentary. Email communications with LivTours before the day were good - although their website ought to make it clear that the Colosseum ticket also provides entry to the Forum without extra charge (ask the guide for the ticket on the day). Overall, highly recommended.

Best tour while in Rome

We booked the Colosseum and Forum tour with access to underground colosseum in August 2022. Barbara was our guide in a small group of 6 and was amazing! It was the best tour we had taken while staying in Rome, she was very knowledgeable about the Ancient city and was so nice in helping us stay hydrated and cool in the shade during the summer heat. The Colosseum Underground and Dungeons

Used for storing slaves and animals, the Hypogeum (or Underground) featured two levels and an entire network of Colosseum tunnels underground. This is where gladiators, wild animals, and the condemned awaited their gruesome fate. Led by a professional English-speaking guide, explore this behind-the-scenes area of the Colosseum, where an active archaeological dig is still going on.

As you walk around this incredible part of the Colosseum, your guide will tell stories of the likely uses of the chambers and dungeons that once hid underneath the original Arena Floor.

Arena Floor and Gladiator's Gate

Ascending to floor level, you'll step back in time as you trace the footsteps of warriors through the imposing Gate of Death (or the gladiator's gate) and out onto the reconstructed Arena Floor. This is the heart of the Colosseum and where the savage games took place.

Please make sure to bring your passport or government ID! We also recommend comfortable shoes for walking on uneven terrain. Bring sunscreen and a water bottle for hot summer months.

What if I have concerns about my mobility on this tour?

This tour includes walking on uneven terrain for most of the tour. If you have any doubts about your mobility, we suggest booking a Colosseum private tour so your needs can be better accommodated.

What happens if it rains?

We run our Colosseum tours rain or shine. If rainfall is extremely heavy, the Colosseum management will sometimes close the restricted areas for safety reasons. If the restricted areas are closed, we will offer an €18 refund to compensate for missing these areas, but we'll still take you inside the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and Roman Forum.

Can my tour be canceled or moved to a different day?

Yes, it is possible. Colosseum Underground tours are very exclusive and are subject to changes, but we’re experts in this field and have staff dedicated to ensuring the best possible customer experience. If we are unable to acquire tickets on your behalf, we will let you know at least 14 days before your tour date, in which case we'll add you to a comparable tour or offer a full refund.

Is it possible The Tour Guy will change this tour time?

Yes, it is very likely to happen due to the exclusive nature of this tour. We recommend you keep your entire day open to accommodate your new tour time. Be sure to monitor your email as we will contact you at least 14 days before the tour with any new start time.

We start our enhanced tour at the special entrance to the “backstage” of the Colosseum. You’ll descend into the Underground section where your expert guide will show you its inner workings, and give you the chance to step back in time and feel what the Gladiators felt as they awaited their fate. This is the space where they would wait to go out to battle, and is also the area where the many animals used by the Roman Empire were held. Tigers, elephants and more were fought by Gladiators and other animals at the Colosseum during its day. Next, you will venture out on to a partial reconstruction of the Arena Floor. Here, you’ll be able to understand the magnitude of the amphitheater from where gladiators faced their foes. Finally, you will walk around the tiers where the spectators were watching the bloody battles that once took place in the Colosseum. • On this tour, some of the venues or parts of the venue may be subject to last-minute, unpredictable closures. When this occurs, we are happy to offer customers an extended tour in keeping with the advertised total length of the tour. 
• Please note that for security reasons, random identity checks can be carried out at the Colosseum by their staff.
• Please make sure you carry an ID or Passport with you on tour to ensure you will be able to enter the venue.

Cancelation Policy

Due to the fact that Colosseum Underground entry tickets must be purchased using the full name of each passenger and cannot be modified or canceled, no refund will be given for any tour cancelation once the tickets are purchased on the passengers’ behalf.

The Colosseum does not allow any company to conduct private visits to the Underground areas. Therefore, we can only run this tour as a group tour.  We limit our groups to no more than 24 people to ensure the tour is special for all our guests.

After the tour of the Colosseum you can choose to either enjoy the skip-the-line entrance tickets to the Roman Forum or stay inside the Colosseum without the guide.

If you wish to do so you need to advise your guide beforehand, and before exit the Colosseum.
