Contiki is great for a particular travel audience. Generally, it’s aimed at younger budget-minded travelers 18 to 35-year-olds. Contiki has hundreds of tours operating all around the globe and their whole thing is ‘social travel’. This is for those who want to soak in the cultural side of the destination and dive deep into the local nightlife as well. It makes sense for any 18 – 35-year-old looking to travel on a budget and party at the same time. Let us take a deeper dive into this Contiki Review and see if it’s the right fit for you.

What is Contiki?

Founded in 1962 Contiki is a New Zealand-based tour company catering to the 18 to 35-year-old market. The idea came from the founder looking to travel on a tight budget yet still have fun and see Europe. Currently, they operate over 300 tours around the world so it’s easy for anyone to find a cool trip anywhere on the globe. I need to mention they won’t allow travelers over the age of 35 to join their tours.

Let me say right now that the average age for a Contiki traveler is 18 to 27.

Accommodations: BUDGET! You’ll be staying in either in a hotel or a hostel so understand these aren’t 4 or 5-star hotels or hostels. However, Contiki does its best to find the best 3-star type hotel or hostel. Depending on the continent that 3-star Euro accommodation will be a 5-star somewhere else. The negative is if you’re sharing a room, you’re hoping your roommate won’t snore and will be courteous with the shared space.

That being said, I never felt unsafe in the locations I stayed in. For the most part, you’ll be out all day and partying most of the night, that bed is there for you to crash.

Group Size : As with any Contiki tour you can expect a minimum of 20 or more travelers with you on the bus. I remember when I did a short 8-day trip I was with 25 or so other travelers. Many travelers will book multiple tours with Contiki so it’s common that during a trip a few will drop off while others will join the group.

Contiki Guides: They round up the whole group in the lobby of the hotel / hostel and they take you on the tour. Yes, they’re like the chaperones we had during a school trip. With one difference, they’re all young and they too want to party. They will take you around the city and do a pub crawl, hit up a club or some cool local spot.

Food: Breakfast is provided on all the tours however from what I remember lunch and dinner was all on you. To save money you can catch some street food that is delicious and cheap.

Cost: It depends on where you plan to go and for how many days. A tour can range from $800 to $3500. Traveling to Europe will obviously cost more than Asia. Also, you’ll need some spending money for whatever comes up, I remember all I brought was $500 for the week.

Drinking and Partying: As you probably already know Contiki has a partying atmosphere however I strongly suggest those 18 to 20 years old travelers to perhaps hold off on going to the US. The legal drinking age in the US is 21 and it’s strictly enforced. I’ve had many of my Australian travel mates say that when they visited the US the younger travelers couldn’t visit any bars or clubs.

Contiki Tours

Contiki Review:

My very first solo tour was with Contiki, I landed in Germany and ended in Prague. I can’t tell you how much fun I had. I have to be 100% honest, I was partying like an animal with everyone else so much of my day was spent being hungover. I pretty much drank Red Bulls to pull it together and finished the tour like a champ. The tour started in Berlin where I met with the tour guide and he was extremely helpful in getting me situated to my room, the rules of the tour, and explaining what optional add-ons were available.

The guide we had was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the area and took his time in explaining everything. He was very outgoing so that made the tour better.

Having a good guide is everything!

The breakfast buffet I do remember was incredible! After a full night of drinking the first thing I wanted to do was chow down on food to soak up the alcohol….we all were doing it.

The negative part was the bus transportation from Berlin to Prague, it was a 5-hour drive so we lost most of the morning.

Prague was the city I fell in love with. I was awestruck by how beautiful that city is and how much more fun I had in Prague rather than Berlin. The food and beer in Prague I felt was better and there was more to do and see. When the tour ended, I wanted to stay but alas I had to return to my life in California. That trip forever changed how I viewed traveling alone.

Final Thoughts On Contiki:

Should you go on a Contiki tour? 100% absolutely YES, if you…

  • Like to party
  • Want the whole trip planned for you
  • Want to meet new people
  • Are on a budget
  • Really like to party!

Optional Add-Ons: These are excursions that Contiki sets up that do cost extra. Depending on the country you’re in they can be just about anything but always check what the add-ons are and see which you want to do. Remember these are optional.

Bus / Coach: This is the only real negative about Contiki, when traveling from one city to the next you’ll be on the bus or coach for a while….in some cases a few hours. That can be a real drag because you lose precious time just sitting on a bus.

Beware of Australians! Seems that all Australians go on a Contiki tour at one point in their lives. Just kidding after doing so many of these tours some of the most fun people I’ve met are from Australia and frankly, they do make the coolest travel buddies.

Most Popular Contiki Tours:

Here are just some of the more popular tours that Contiki runs catering to so many tastes. The best part is they’re constantly running specials with deals left and right. Here’s a glimpse of their more popular tours:

If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience on your next trip and have the time of your life, then consider Thailand! I couldn’t believe how much fun I had during the New Year’s celebration. There’s nothing like reigning in the new year and rocking out on the beach during a ‘full moon party’.

The Truth About Contiki Tours – The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

Picture this: A diverse group of people has their own unique stories and backgrounds. They are setting out on a shared journey through the heart of Europe.

That’s Contiki’s essence. It’s a unique travel adventure for young 18 to 35-year-olds. It’s for those who crave both excitement and camaraderie.

porto group picture portugal

But don’t get too swept up in the romantic idea of gallivanting across Europe .

Let’s strip away the glossy brochure promises. Sure, the plan has famous landmarks and lesser-known spots. But, can they make your trip a memorable adventure?

Having gone on one of their trips this spring to Europe , I set out to debunk this question in this article.

As I sit down to write, I’m eager to offer you an unfiltered account of my Contiki trip. I’ll cover the highs, the lows, the unexpected twists, , and even how I managed to fit in some self-care amidst the whirlwind of activities.

At A Glance

What Is Contiki?

Why go on a guided tour, limited time for holiday, don’t want to plan your own trip, want to travel but be safe, want to travel solo and make new friends, see a bit of everything, if you’re not a patient person, if you want to explore each destination in depth, if you want more flexibility in your itinerary, if you prefer intimate or solo travel, if you desire authentic cultural immersion, i’m in my late 20s, is contiki right for me, organisation, state-of-the-art equipment, making travel matter, travel pace, personal time off, accommodation, transportation, experiences and activities, trip manager and local guides, personal expenses, travel insurance, so, is contiki worth it.

Contiki claims to be more than just another travel company; it markets itself as a haven exclusively crafted for the bold and youthful, like you and me.

Imagine a global tribe of adventurers, aged between 18 and 35, spanning 60 countries and 6 continents. This is Contiki’s promise – a vibrant community bound by a shared passion for exploration and friendship.

They offer over 350 trips and 300 unique itineraries , promising something for every type of adventurer. From exploring remote Peruvian towns to trekking through Guatemalan jungles, Contiki’s offerings seem exciting on paper.

Amidst the glossy brochures and Instagram-worthy snapshots, does the reality of the trip actually meet the hype that they promise?

Opting for a guided tour simplifies travel in many ways.

When travelling with friends, choosing a tour stops endless debates. They are about itinerary details and accommodations. Everyone pays the tour operator directly, such as Contiki. This makes logistics easy and allows for a smoother journey.

For solo travellers, guided tours offer a chance to meet new people and share costs. They also allow you to explore safely, especially in unfamiliar regions. It’s a good way to explore new cultures. It’s also a way to make friends with fellow travellers.

Guided tours also provide security. You know you have a knowledgeable guide leading the way. This allows for more immersive experiences. You can interact with locals. It enriches your understanding of different cultures.

In my experience, opting for a guided tour has made my travels more enjoyable and hassle-free.

Who’s Contiki For

If you’re strapped for time but eager to make the most of your precious vacation days, Contiki is your ticket to efficient and immersive travel experiences.

With meticulously planned itineraries, you can explore multiple destinations in a single trip without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

Travelling solo doesn’t mean you have to be alone.

With Contiki, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with like-minded travellers from around the globe. Whether you’re sharing stories over a communal meal, exploring a new city together, or embarking on adrenaline-fueled adventures, you’ll find that the bonds formed on a Contiki trip are as unforgettable as the destinations themselves.

If you’re the type of traveller who wants to see it all – from iconic landmarks to hidden gems – then Contiki is the perfect fit for you.

With a diverse range of trips and itineraries that span continents and cultures, you can customise your adventure to suit your interests and preferences.

Whether you’re craving the hustle and bustle of a vibrant city, the tranquillity of a scenic countryside, or the thrill of an adrenaline-pumping adventure, Contiki offers something for everyone.

Who’s Contiki Not For

If you prefer to move at your own pace and dislike waiting for others to catch up, Contiki may not be the best fit for you.

Group travel inherently involves coordinating schedules and accommodating varying preferences, which can sometimes result in waiting periods during activities or transit.

Contiki tours are designed to offer a taste of multiple destinations within a limited timeframe, which means that time spent in each location is often brief and packed with activities.

If you crave deep exploration and immersive experiences in every destination you visit, you may find the pace of Contiki tours too rushed.

While Contiki provides carefully curated itineraries that offer a well-rounded travel experience, there may be limited flexibility for spontaneous detours or personalised activities.

If you prefer the freedom to tailor your travel plans on the fly and explore off-the-beaten-path destinations, you may find the structured nature of Contiki tours constraining.

Contiki tours cater primarily to young travellers aged 18 to 35 who enjoy the social aspect of group travel.

If you prefer solo travel experiences that allow for deeper connections with locals and greater autonomy in decision-making, you may feel more fulfilled pursuing alternative travel options.

While Contiki offers opportunities to meet fellow travellers and forge new friendships, the group dynamic may not suit everyone’s preferences.

While Contiki strives to provide immersive cultural experiences, the nature of group travel can sometimes result in a more superficial exploration of local culture and customs.

If your travel philosophy centres around authentic cultural immersion and meaningful interactions with locals, you may find that Contiki tours prioritise convenience and entertainment over deep cultural engagement.

In my late 20s and early 30s, the world seems to stretch out before me.

During this time, I found Contiki. It promised adventures and memories to last a lifetime. And indeed, my experience was transformative.

toledo, spain

As I set foot on the shores of the Iberian Peninsula, I found myself in the rich cultures of Spain and Portugal . The streets of Cascais are colourful. The rhythms of a Flamenco show are soul-stirring. Each moment felt like a brushstroke on a canvas of discovery.

One highlight was ziplining in Toledo. I love adventure. Toledo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site . It is known for its rich history, diverse cultures, great buildings, and art. And who could forget immersing in the essence of Portugal’s renowned wine culture at a port wine tasting in a wine cellar in Porto?

But amidst the excitement, I found myself pondering: Is Contiki truly the right fit for me in my late 20s?

The itinerary promised a whirlwind of experiences. But, I wondered if travel was more than just ticking off landmarks and eating local food.

I delved deeper into Contiki. I realised that it caters to a specific group. They crave adventure but may overlook cultural immersion.

Sure, Contiki offers a taste of the wonders of the world. But, for those seeking a more introspective journey, it might leave something to be desired.

As I reflect on my time with Contiki, I can’t help but appreciate the highs and see the limits. I’ve realised that the right travel experience is about the destination and the journey within.

What I Was Impressed By Experiencing A Contiki Trip First-Hand

Experiencing a Contiki trip first-hand was an eye-opening adventure that turned out to be nothing like what I expected.

First and foremost, the level of organisation was impeccable. From the moment we gathered for the trip briefing to the final farewell, every detail was carefully planned and executed flawlessly.

As someone with a busy work schedule , having all the logistics taken care of, from accommodations to activities, allowed me to fully immerse myself in the travel experience without any added stress.

One of the things I loved most about Contiki is the sense of community it fosters.

I felt like I was part of something bigger – a global family of like-minded travellers united by a shared passion for exploration.

Whether we were sharing churros in Spain or meandering through the charming streets of Portugal, the camaraderie formed during our Contiki adventure was truly special.

Another aspect that particularly stood out to me was the emphasis on safety.

Before we set off on our journey, our Trip Manager conducted a thorough safety briefing, ensuring that everyone was well-informed and prepared for any situation that might arise. It was reassuring to know that our well-being was a top priority throughout the trip.

Solo travel can sometimes be intimidating, especially in unfamiliar territories or if you’re embarking on solo travel for the first time. However, Contiki’s experienced Trip Managers and the supportive group dynamic provided a reassuring sense of safety and companionship throughout the journey.

contiki bus coach

Another highlight was the brand-new coach we spent most of our time in. With modern amenities, a bathroom, and plush seating, it became our home away from home as we traversed Europe’s winding roads.

From the moment I stepped onto the coach, a premium and more comfortable bus, I felt at ease. The spacious, plush seats and smooth ride, along with amenities like Wi-Fi and power outlets, made the journey relaxing and enjoyable.

Of course, it wasn’t all serious business on our Contiki trip. The atmosphere was filled with infectious energy, and laughter echoed through the air as we shared unforgettable moments together.

The one effort that really stood out to me was how Maddy, our Trip Manager, would play a special song for us each morning when we boarded our coach to set the energy right for the rest of the day. I’ve got the song now in my playlist which brings me back to the fond memories of our trip each time I play it!

From impromptu dance parties to inside jokes that had us in stitches, there was never a dull moment.

contiki make travel matter

What truly set Contiki apart was their commitment to making travel matter. Through their “Make Travel Matter” initiative in 2016, Contiki is dedicated to giving back to the communities we visit.

One memorable experience was in Cascais, where we participated in a community project to create 80 vibrant paintings that now adorn the local streets, bringing joy to residents and visitors alike.

Additionally, Contiki supports initiatives to aid homeless individuals, providing free classes, meals, and access to essential services such as showers – a testament to their dedication to making a positive impact wherever they go.

What I Was Not So Impressed By Experiencing A Contiki Trip First-Hand

While the overall experience was positive, there were a few aspects during the trip that I thought could be improved.

One area that fell short of my expectations was the pace of the trip. This comes with every group tour that you go with. With larger groups, it naturally takes a longer time to coordinate everything.

I appreciated our Trip Manager and Driver doing their best to coordinate everything in advance so waiting time is minimised.

Individual travellers from the trip, however, are another story. While Trip Managers emphasise punctuality and Contiki trips are very strict about leaving on time, there’s always someone who takes a bit longer than usual.

Your best bet is to hope you don’t encounter an Insta-wannabe who needs multiple shots for the perfect angle and ends up holding everyone else up.

Remember, standard Contiki trips won’t wait around if you’re late.

portuguese tarts lisbon portugal

Shared meals aren’t as prevalent on their standard trips, which means you might not have as many opportunities to dine together as a group. When you do have a group meal, it can take up to 1.5 hours.

On the flipside, as someone who enjoys taking more time to soak in the sights and sounds of each destination, I found the itinerary to be somewhat rushed at times. With jam-packed schedules and tight timelines, there were moments when I felt like I was simply checking off boxes rather than fully immersing myself in the local culture.

Another aspect that left me wanting more was the amount of downtime we had. While I understand Contiki aims to create a rich shared experience in each location, being with a group of strangers for nine consecutive days meant constantly engaging socially. For an introvert like me, that can be draining after a while.

On standard Contiki trips, I appreciated having more genuine free time to do my own thing. While there were group activities, there were also plenty of opportunities to explore independently.

You might assume you can finally switch off after the day is done, but if you opt for the default package, you’ll be sharing your room with one or two other travellers from the trip. To address this, there’s an option to book a private room for yourself.

What’s Included On A Contiki Trip

Contiki provides accommodation throughout your trip, ranging from hotels and hostels to unique stays like glamping or cabins. Rest assured, your lodging will be comfortable and conveniently located.

There’s also the option to upgrade to a private room if you’re not comfortable with sharing with strangers.

The best part about booking a trip with Contiki is that you don’t have to worry about transport. Contiki takes care of transportation between destinations, whether it’s by coach, train, or ferry. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey as you move from one exciting location to the next.

group meals madrid spain

While some meals are included, such as breakfasts or select dinners, Contiki also allows for flexibility so you can explore local cuisine on your own.

Be sure to check your specific itinerary for details on meal inclusions.

Your Contiki trip includes a variety of experiences and activities, ranging from guided tours of landmarks to adventurous excursions like hiking or snorkelling.

These activities are designed to immerse you in the culture and beauty of each destination. Some of them are included in a standard package, while others are optional add-ons.

Throughout your journey, you’ll be accompanied by a knowledgeable Trip Manager who’ll provide valuable insights, assistance, and recommendations. All of them, I’ve learned, are highly trained and are guaranteed to give you a good time!

In addition, local guides may join specific activities to offer expertise on the area’s history, culture, and attractions.

While Contiki provides a structured itinerary, there’s also some free time built into the schedule for you to explore independently, work remotely , or relax at your leisure. Use this time to discover hidden gems, shop for souvenirs, catch up on work, or simply unwind and soak up the atmosphere.

What’s Not Included On A Contiki Trip

Flights to and from the starting and ending points of the tour are not included in the base price.

You’re responsible for arranging and purchasing their airfare, ensuring that flights align with the tour’s departure and return dates.

Costs such as souvenirs, snacks, and personal purchases are not typically covered by Contiki. Travellers should budget for any items they wish to buy during the trip and consider currency exchange rates if travelling internationally.

Contiki offers optional travel insurance for purchase, but it’s not typically included in the base trip price.

Travel insurance provides coverage for unforeseen events such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and lost or damaged belongings. Here are the ones I recommend .

belem lisbon portugal chatting people

It really depends on what you’re looking for in your trip.

If you prefer taking your time to explore, want to deeply immerse yourself in local culture and cuisine, and need to keep an eye on your budget, then doing your own research might be the best option.

However, if you want someone else to handle the planning, whisk you away every day, and ensure you have a blast checking off your bucket list, then Contiki is the way to go!

With Contiki, you can sit back, relax, and focus on making amazing memories with new friends. Whether you’re packing for your trip as a digital nomad or preparing for a road trip , Contiki has you covered.

What sets Contiki apart is its commitment to making travel accessible, social, and unforgettable for young people. From themed trips tailored to specific interests like Pride celebrations or Christmas markets to expertly curated itineraries that showcase the hidden gems of each destination, every Contiki experience is crafted with care and attention to detail.

Ultimately, whether Contiki is the right choice for you depends on your preferences, travel style, and what you hope to gain from your journey. But one thing is certain – embarking on a Contiki tour is sure to be an adventure filled with excitement and memories to last a lifetime.

While my Contiki experience was filled with unforgettable moments, there were aspects of the trip that left me rethinking if a group tour is right for my travel style.

However, despite these shortcomings, I remain grateful for the opportunity to explore the world with Contiki and look forward to future adventures that this renowned travel company offers!

Special thanks to Contiki for making this experience possible! All opinions remain my own.

The Good, Bad and a Brutally Honest Contiki Review (Are Contiki Tours for You?)

By: Author Taylor Lorenz

The Good, Bad and a Brutally Honest Contiki Review (Are Contiki Tours for You?)

To kick off my solo travel career I opted to try a group tour so I wasn’t 100% alone. It was through a friend that I heard of Contiki tours and soon after I found myself on not only one, but three different tours back to back.

But what’s the truth, the brutally honest truth of Contiki travel? Below I cover exactly what to expect as one of few completely honest Contiki reviews.

Keep in mind that this is based on my experiences and that others may have had significantly different experiences, though the majority agree that Contiki tours are awesome and a wildly good time.

What is Contiki?

Contiki is a tour company created for 18-35’s who want to travel the world and live by the Contiki slogan #NOREGRETS. They do a pretty good job of following up with their slogan on trips that are pretty much dream itineraries for travellers who want to see as much as possible with limited time.

Contiki offers tours for destinations around the world including Europe, Asia, USA and Canada, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand and their latest tours are now in Africa too.

With tours as short as a weekend to as long as 45 days, there is something for everyone. They offer budget to luxury, priding themselves in offering eight different travel styles. And with 53 years of tours under their belt, they know a thing or two about doing it right.

They’re also known for having 50% of their travelers as solo travelers, making it easy to meet others.

Contiki Europe Reviews

I personally only went on Contiki tours in Europe and I did the following two:

  • London to Athens Plus Mykonos and Santorini Island Escape
  • Oktoberfest

My short take Contiki tour reviews? All of these tours are awesome and I would recommend them to anyone travelling solo or who wants to see as much as possible in a short amount of time.

Expect for Oktoberfest, that was a completely different type of trip and it was too, totally awesome with excursions and transfers and Oktoberfest tables organized for you.

Should you go on a Contiki tour?

This is the short answer.

Yes, if…

  • You like to party
  • You want everything organized for you
  • You’re a solo traveler wanting to meet people
  • Your budget is not small

No, if…

  • You have a tight budget
  • You don’t care about meeting people
  • You want to explore more in places
  • You like luxury or relaxation

And for the long answer…read through these highlights and not-so-great things about Contiki tours to help you make a more informed decision.

Kind of People on Contiki Tours

If you’re Australian and are debating going on a Contiki tour to get away from your country or to meet people from around the world…you’ll probably end up meeting more Australians than anything. Little did I know before leaving for the trip that Contiki tours are insanely popular in Australia and widely known across the country.

When I mentioned Contiki tours to people back home in Canada, not many knew what I was talking about.

Contiki Culture

Contiki tours are targeted to a younger market, with most traveler’s being between the age of 19-23. That age is a party age. So if you’re not a big partier then you may want to reconsider.

I’m not saying that it isn’t fun without the partying because it is, you still do and see awesome things, but there is usually a lot of drinking involved. Like drinking almost every night. It’s always a good time.

Contiki Tours for Solo Travellers

There’s something about traveling with people that really affects how quickly you become close. In no time you will find some people who you mesh well with, and by the end of the trip, you’ll be crying because you have to go on your separate journeys.

These tours bring people together in a way that’s different than your friends at home which make them ideal for solo travellers. Since my tours I’ve met up with multiple people and travelled with a few from these trips. Travel friendship bonds you in a way like no other.

What are Contiki guides like?

The guides are so much more than a guide. They’re not just the ones telling you what time you have to be on the bus by, they’re also the ones partying with you until the last one calls a quit.

They’re not just giving you phenomenal tours of a city, they’re also there to chat with you at breakfast. They’re not just your tour guide, they’re also a part of your family, your Contiki family which you’ll love dearly in the end.

What are the groups like?

Put a bunch of boys and girls together, mix in a lot of drinking and spontaneous decisions because well why not, you’re on vacation! And you’ll find some drama, usually amongst the girls, and usually over a boy. You’re with the same people on a bus day in and day out, cliques can form and people get mad when boys sleep with more than one girl. Shit happens, people get jealous, this is nothing new, but something that can be expected.

Luckily this never happened on my trip! Though my big tour was 30 girls and 4 boys, two of which were gay, one found out his girlfriend at home was pregnant while on the trip and the last ended up marrying one of the girls he met on the trip!

Contiki Cough

Don’t be surprised to hear from past Contiki tour goers about the Contiki cough. You’re on a Contiki bus with the same people and sharing rooms, someone is bound to get sick. And then it spreads. With the lack of sleep and busy schedule you know one person will get sick and share their gems amongst everyone. Most common is the Contiki cough, or a cold, or both.

What do you see on a Contiki trip? What is the pace like?

Tours in general are known for being quite quick and the Contiki tours are no different. I took a slower pace tour and found myself jumping from city to city in the blink of an eye. You can spend anywhere from 1-3 nights in each city, which some people think is too little.

I like to think of it as a small taste of each place. It’s just enough to know if you like the vibe of a place before you move on. Then you’ll know exactly where you’ll want to come back to in the future.

The good news is that different kinds of tours are offered for different paces, budget and accommodation style.

Is there any freedom?

Yes! What’s great about Contiki tours is that it’s not back-to-back events with every minute of your day planned. There are nightly events which you can attend (at an extra cost) or you can do your own thing. As long as you’re on the bus when you need to be, that’s the only time the tour guide ever does a headcount.

You’ll always have the day to yourself. This is when your tour guide and bus driver will take a break and you and your new-found BFFL can see all the sites your heart desires.

Food & Accommodation

If you want local experiences, to try amazing food, and stay in good accommodations then don’t take a Contiki budget tour. I can’t vouch for their luxury trips but the budget ones bring you to restaurants that every tour goes to, and accommodation  can  have bed bugs (guess who slept in a hotel lobby in Greece because we discovered bed bugs in our room at 2AM?).

Accommodations are often outside the city centre because they are cheaper. You have time to discover your own tasty food during the day and opt to go out for your own dinners if food is important to you.

Is Contiki Worth It?

Only you can decide.

Contiki Tour Highlights

  • Maximize what you get to see in limited time
  • Make great friends
  • My Contiki seamlessly makes handling documents and meeting people a breeze
  • You never have to worry about booking a thing or transportation
  • Expert guides who go above and beyond
  • Ideal for solo and group travellers

Contiki Tour Downsides

  • Expensive (as are all tours)
  • Always large groups (which could be a good or bad thing)
  • Heavy focus on partying (only a downside if you’re not into that)
  • Fast-paced aka little time for relaxation on the majority of the tours but not all

The truth about Contiki tours is that they’re made for young travelers, people looking to have a great time, see some sights, drink some French wine, and meet people. The experience is as much of a party, and about meeting people as it is about travel.

People will sleep together, you will see some amazing sights, you’ll make good friends, you’ll get little sleep, you’ll party lots, you’ll try unique experiences for each area, and most of all, you’ll come out of it with no regrets (as they promise), which is pretty good. Just don’t be one of those people who gets #NOREGRETS tattooed on them and I’m sure you’ll leave with none.

The simplest truth is that you’ll spend a decent amount of money, you’ll have a great time and you’ll scratch the surface of travel, seeing only the best of the best things to see in each place.

People that have booked this tour have also searched for the following:

Day 1: Amman

Location: amman, accommodation: hotel, accommodation name: rawa hotel suites (or similar), meals included: dinner.

Welcome to Jordan! Bronze age ruins, a restored Roman theater, art galleries & a Royal Automobile Museum, Jordan's capital city is a Middle Eastern metropolis of ancient and modern and the perfect place to begin our Israel & Jordan adventures. We’ll linger here for a night and enjoy an included dinner to get to know each other.

Day 2: Amman To Petra

Location: jerash, wadi musa, amman, accommodation name: petra panorama hotel (or similar), meals included: breakfast.

We’ll enjoy a leisurely breakfast this morning before setting off, bound for a visit and lunch stop at the Treadright-supported Iraq Al-Amir Women's Cooperative Society on our way to the ancient Greco-Roman city of Jerash and Rose City of Petra. Here in Jerash, we’ll uncover the Greek & Roman influences on this holy land, as a tour of the city sees us peruse Corinthian columns and ancient ruins. Arriving in Petra, our anticipation will be at an all-time high with the knowledge that tomorrow we’ll be visiting the UNESCO World Heritage site that this city is famed for.

Day 3: Petra

Location: wadi musa, meals included: breakfast, dinner.

Today is dedicated to uncovering the wonders of Petra - the magnificent ancient capital of the Nabatean Kingdom, where the hues of pink make us forget what era we’re in. Once we’re done taking pictures, we’ll be awed a second time as our local guide briefs us on the city’s history. Getting up close and personal with Pharaoh’s Castle, the Triumphal Arc and the Treasury, we’ll see just why this is the greatest attraction in the Middle East. After a full day of exploring, we’ll head back to our hotel for an included dinner.

Day 4: Petra To Wadi Rum

Location: wadi musa, wadi rum village, accommodation: camp, accommodation name: wadi rum el zawaydeh camp (or similar).

All that cultural discovery of the past few days has us craving some chill time, and we’ll find it in Wadi Rum. We’ll leave Petra and embark on a journey through Jordan’s largest and most stunning desert. Silent landscapes, ancient riverbeds and pastel colors will have us glued to the windows as we hop in a 4x4 for the full desert experience. Tonight, we'll be treated to a Special Stay overnight in the desert, complete with comfortable tents and dinner under the stars.

Day 5: Wadi Rum To Amman

Location: amman, wadi rum village.

Rested and in love with the desert, we're heading back to Amman today where we'll have a final night here in Jordan. We'll stop off for lunch here in Aqaba. With divine food, beachside bliss and sultry views of the Red Sea, you'll think you're in a movie... Suitably sun-kissed and utterly relaxed, we'll return to Amman, you're free to hang out with your crew or hit the hay, ready for more adventures on the morrow.

Day 6: Amman To Jerusalem

Location: jerusalem, amman, accommodation name: prima park hotel (or similar).

Rolling over the border to Israel, our first stop will be ancient Jerusalem. Welcome to Israel, we've arrived in the City of Gold: Jerusalem. In this religious center of Christianity, Islam & Judaism, we'll begin with an included dinner followed by a free evening to explore.

Day 7: Jerusalem

Location: jerusalem.

Today you have the option to go beyond the monuments and dig deeper into ancient life, with a free day to explore. Maybe step back in history at the Israel Museum to view the Dead Sea Scrolls and see what the city might have looked like in ancient times with the Second Temple Model. Or take up the chance to visit the ancient fortress of Masada and float in the Dead Sea on our optional day trip.

Day 8: Jerusalem

For our second day in Jerusalem we'll begin with a full day tour, uncovering secrets and culture that dates back thousands of years. We’ll discover the city's holy history and iconic sites, including the Jewish Quarter and the Arab Market, and visit Lions Gate, Dolorosa, and the Church of Holy Sepulchre. Tonight you have the chance to see the city lit up at night, with an optional light show.

Day 9: Jerusalem To Haifa

Location: jerusalem, haifa, accommodation name: gev-holiday village (or similar).

It's been incredible, but it's time to move on from Jerusalem and discover more of Israel. On our way out of Jerusalem, we'll make a visit to the sobering site of the Yad Vashem Museum and Memorial, also known as The World Holocaust Remembrance Center. Here in Haifa we'll discover life outside of the cities on a Kibbutz, a collective community way of living, unique to Israel. We'll enjoy a traditional dinner here at the Kibbutz and experience Israeli hospitality.

Day 10: Haifa To Tel Aviv

Location: haifa, tel aviv-yafo, accommodation name: lighthouse hotel tel aviv (or similar).

Waving goodbye to Kibbutz life in Haifa, today we have our sights set for Tel Aviv. We'll meet Doris Hiffawi as part of a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® experience and enjoy famous Anton coffee and sweets as Doris invites us to her home in the Ajami neighborhood of Jaffa. She will share her personal story of a Christian girl growing up in a Jewish, Muslim, and Christian area. Her heartfelt story shows the complexity of the mixed population city, speaks to the Arab Christian identity in Israel, and explores the true meaning of female empowerment in the area. After all the ancient history we've absorbed on this trip, you'll have the whole afternoon and evening free to orientate yourself into the urban vibes of Tel Aviv.

Day 11: Tel Aviv

Location: tel aviv-yafo.

The day is yours to explore at your own pace, and in a city inundated with beaches, parks, museums, shopping centers and cafes, we promise you won't get bored. Keep it high energy with a day full of seeing the sights and sinking your teeth into Tel Aviv’s eclectic culinary scene, or slow it down with a day spent perusing boutiques with an ice cream in hand.

Day 12: Tel Aviv

It’s been one incredible adventure, but all good things must come to an end. After a hearty breakfast, we’ll say our goodbyes and swap details. We sense new adventures on the horizon!

I love that each destination and hotel accommodation is listed. Makes planning or even deciding to take the trip so much easier. Each time I emailed a question, I got a response right away. So far, I'm very impressed and looking forward to the trip that we booked for next year.

I just heard about tourhub. What a fantastic collection of holidays. I booked a holiday to Morocco and had a few questions, for which I received prompt and useful responses. Would highly recommend

Contiki Tours Review: Great Britain and Ireland

A tour of the United Kingdom is a great experience everyone should take part in at least once in their life. You will find it deeply enriching with the culture, history, food, and extra activities you can do here.

[This page may contain  affiliate links  to trusted partners.]

This is a review of the Great Britain and Ireland group tour provided by the tour company Contiki. It is a 16 day duration traveling through England, Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Wales. So you are getting to experience some of the highlights of 5 countries over a 2 week period.

You will follow a flexible itinerary showcasing the cities and countries you will be visiting, but you will be given some free time to explore on your own or join other smaller parts of the group if you have your own ideas on what sites or stops you would like to make during that period.

*Note that tours and activities are subject to change depending on the month, weather, federally recognized holidays, and other restrictive conditions.

Monument at Corgaff Scotland

The Great Britain and Ireland is one of the most popular tours Contiki has to offer. Depending on the month and season you decide to sign up for this tour, the group size will vary. It can be a cozy and intimate group of 10-15 people or a large group of 30-40. You will usually never know until you actually arrive. The same goes for the age of the group and country of origin. It’s possible you may find yourself the only person from your country and the majority of the group is from one or two along with a handful of others from various countries.

Contiki Tour Guide

You will mostly be led by your own Contiki tour guide along with other local guides depending on the add-on activity you choose to do. They will have a deeper knowledge of some specific things of Great Britain and Ireland while your tour guide will have more knowledge as a whole.

Your tour guide is there to make sure you have a good time. They will have been trained on communication skills, knowledge of the areas you will be going to, what to do in case of emergencies, and overall to make sure the itinerary is followed.

Part of the fun is that these tour guides are veterans when it comes to travel and will have wonderful recommendations on places to eat or go out for a nightcap after the day is done or suggest hidden gems of activities during your free time in the tour itinerary.

Accommodations

Traveling through Great Britain and Ireland, most of your stay will be in standard 4-Star hotels or smaller but similar lodgings. If you did not select to have your room during the trip, you will be paired with one or two others randomly at the beginning of the tour and they will most likely be your roommates for the duration.

This can have a positive or negative effect on your trip depending on who you are roomed with. If you feel the need to swap rooms with someone else during the trip, mention this to your tour guide who will attempt to make arrangements or reconciliation between you and the person you are not getting along with. This rarely happens as most people on tour groups tend to put their best foot forward and try to compromise but there are random instances.

Transportation

The tour is going to be a combination of a private bus used for the entirety of the trip to get you from city to city. Your daily activities will include light walking, a boat ride or two, and some light hiking as well. The transportation will pass safety inspections and you will be given instructions in case of an emergency. This is the standard process when taking a tour.

Great Britain and Ireland Tour Itinerary

  • Day 6: Edinburgh to Inverness via St. Andrews via Stirling
  • Day 7: Inverness via Loch Ness via Aviemore
  • Day 8: Inverness to Glasgow via Glenfinnan Viaduct
  • Day 9: Glasgow to Dublin via Larne
  • Day 10: Dublin to County Cork via Kilkenny
  • Day 11: County Cork to Galway via Blarney via Cliffs of Mohr
  • Day 12: Galway
  • Day 13: Galway to Derry/Londonderry
  • Day 14: Derry/Londonderry to Belfast via Giant’s Causeway
  • Day 15: Belfast to Dublin
  • Day 16: Dublin to London via Wales

Tour Highlights

Most of the highlights of this tour were the optional add-ons that you can participate in but there were a few that are included experiences. If you decide that some of the add-ons are not for you, then you these as your own free time to explore and meet up with the group later at an agreed upon location.

Beatles Magic Mystery Tour

Great Britain and Ireland Cavern Club

This is a great way to explore Liverpool while getting a quick history of the The Beatles in their younger years. You will be strolling through iconic streets like Penny Lane and finishing the tour at the world famous Cavern Club, where you can see the displays of rock and roll icons.

York Ghost Walk

Another tour add-on except at night where you get to learn about the darker side of the city from a local guide. You’ll need to push your imagination being in a modern area compared to the storytelling but it’s still fun just roaming the city at night in historic areas and crossing through dark alleys with your group.

Traditional Scottish Dinner

You’ve got the bagpipes and a 3-course dinner to really set the mood for dinner here. We definitely recommend trying the haggis as your main entree. It’s a great way to spend the night with a lot of laughs, Scottish music, and just overall socializing.

Swim Loch Ness Lake

Swimming in the Lochness Lake

I wouldn’t say swim as much as dip your toes by the shoreline. During my trip I accidentally slipped on the rocks and fell fully clothed into the water. With the weather being what it is in Scotland, it was very, very cold. But still you will have some gorgeous panoramic views of the lake.

Jameson Distillery

Part of the added fun here is becoming a certified Irish Whiskey Taster at the end of tour, with printed certificate for you to take home as a souvenir. You get to learn about the whole distillery process and Jameson history in Ireland while getting to learn how to spot the subtle differences among several small samples.

Cliffs of Mohr

This location is iconic and nearly every tour you take will make a stop here. The views are just ridiculous at how beautiful it is. You may unfortunately be caught in some bad weather depending on what month you decide to go. It can be very windy and a lot of rain in those parts. Just make sure to bring a jacket or heavy sweater to help get you through the day.

Londonderry Murals

Londonderry Mural

You will see how the political unrest of Northern Ireland may have died down here a little but it has never really been forgotten. Your local guide will take you through the history while viewing all the murals and additional street art in this hub of Londonderry. The mood may be a bit more somber but this piece of history is still very much alive and you should want to learn even just the tidbits.

Giant’s Causeway

Another popular outdoor tourist attraction. You will have a fine afternoon walking the paths and along the rock-shaped formations of this geological marvel. It’s a nice place to stretch your legs and enjoy the Irish ocean breeze. This is a must-visit for Northern Ireland so expect a lot of other tour buses and groups coming through during the day.

Guinness Storehouse

Guinness Storehouse

Finishing up in Dublin, you get to take a tour of the Guinness Storehouse. It’s really one of the best ways to spend your time in Dublin . One of the highlights here is taking the lesson to learn how to pour the perfect pint of Guinness. That way when you are back home you can see how well other servers and bartenders do it compared to you. You will get another certificate similar to the certified whisky taster you received earlier in the trip.

These are just a small fraction of the experiences you are bound to have here and these activities and highlights are always changing so no trip is exactly the same. Don’t worry about having to capture pictures for every single moment of the trip. Just forget about the camera sometimes and just live in the moment of what you are doing in these amazing places.

Is it Worth the Price?

This tour does not include the flight to get to London but it is still a fair deal when you are getting accommodations, transportation, some included breakfast and dinners, and included experiences that are part of the itinerary over 16 days. Yes, if you really deep dive into researching cheaper hotel options and transportation options I am sure you can find some. But you are also really paying to socialize and travel with others like yourself instead of traveling completely solo, which some may not prefer. The tour provides good value for it’s cost and you won’t second guess yourself afterwards.

The Great Britain and Ireland tour was great overall. It’s the way to get yourself oriented to each of the countries. There is no way you won’t want to come visit again to explore the places the tour couldn’t get to or that you may want to do a deeper dive into more local attractions and highlights.

One of the only recommendations that I have was to expand on the time spent in Wales. There did not feel like there was enough time to really explore and tour the city and was more of a pit stop on the way back to London. Adding a longer stop here or even another day to really discover this country would be a bonus.
