Creative Travel Tips: Discover More of a Destination and Yourself
January 23, 2023 by Guest
This post was contributed by Elena Paschinger of CreativElena . She is the author of The Creative Traveler's Handbook .
What do you like to do? Hobbies? Crafts? Maybe, you want to try something new. That's one of the best reasons for creative travel.
When was the last time you did something for the first time? If “too long ago” is your answer, then you might be in need of the very inspiration creative travel can provide.
But what is it and why should you include creative activities in your travels?
The simple answer is: Creative travel allows you to experience the soul of your destination. Learning local crafts and methods, using local resources, being taught by local experts, takes you into your destination in a unique and powerful way.
You can read more about great destinations for solo travelers here .
Table of Contents
What is Creative Travel?
Creative travel is:
- carving my own unique piece of pounamu of New Zealand greenstone, with the help of a traditional Maori tutor.
- learning how to dance the tango in Buenos Aires in a typical Casa Milonga.
- cooking a three-course meal with charming French chef, Marthe Brohan in her private home in Paris.
Experiences such as these have the power to change you forever.
Creative travel goes beyond the typical boundaries of a fleeting “been there, done that” tourism exchange. It is the warmth you feel when you enter a family home anywhere on the planet and cook and share a meal with locals. It is the heat of the tango as you try to keep up with the pace of your instructor. It is the leap of joy when you finally wear your hand-carved souvenir round your neck. It is absolutely mind-blowing.
Here Are My 10 Tips to Travel Creatively
- Change “I cannot do this” into “I never thought I could!” What sounds like the utmost barrier to expressing your own creativity while traveling – the fear of failure – is actually the greatest opportunity you have. After all, who is there to judge you when you travel solo? Your tutors, the local people, will cherish you, and you will find that the happiness of achieving something “you never thought you could” is simply overwhelming. Not to mention the admiring looks and the recognition you get from your friends and family back home, when you reveal your new skill with a child-like sense of pride on your face!
- Social media makes it easy to research creative travel opportunities in advance and stay in touch. It has been almost a decade since I first started creative traveling around the world. The Internet, with blogs and social media in particular, has made researching creative travel organizations and tour operators easy. It has also made it very easy to stay in touch with creative people you meet on your travels. You can continue networking, sharing, and exchanging ideas.
- Let the locals guide you to achieving your full, creative potential. There is one common trait in all the creative people I have met with over the past few years on my creative trips around the world: they all share a passion. They live to tell their story. Very often, they are the story, and invariably, as a solo traveler, you will be drawn into the magic of writing your own story with them. Local tutors are there to facilitate your individual experience, to provide the setting for creativity to happen and express itself, so that you become a part of their story in return. As such, the experience you have has the power to transform you – the single greatest achievement you can have on any trip.
- Join a festival with lots of art and creativity on display! One way to overcome any misconceptions you have that you’re “not creative” is to explore the local art scene as part of a cultural event or festival where creativity is celebrated. This could be anything from interactive workshops with local people teaching you everything from crafts, pottery, weaving, or cooking to designing your own jewelry, making music, or joining a wine or beer tasting. It is a way to blend in with the crowd and experience firsthand the benefits of creative travel.
- Organizing your creative trip well minimizes risk and unexpected outcomes. Though I only spent six days in the city of Buenos Aires, I spent almost six weeks researching and organizing my creative stay in the city, including everything from a street art graffiti tour on one day to a cooking class and tango lesson on another. I did this via email and social media, contacting all partners beforehand. The other option I had was to contact a specialized tour operator such as ANDA Turismo Responsable. Reassurance from operators and prior organization always pays off, especially when it comes to new destinations or unfamiliar experiences.
- Birds of a feather flock together: Creative travel helps like-minded solo travelers meet. Creative travel not only allows you to meet unique local personalities, it also connects you with other solo travelers who have similar interests. Do you have an interest in learning how to carve a wooden statue using a chain saw? Perfect: Creative Tourism Austria provides exotic, hands-on workshops such as these. Do you want to dig deeper into traditional Aboriginal art? Then connect the dots by doing your own dot-painting workshop at holy Uluru (Ayers Rock) mountain with a group of Aboriginal artists.
- Take a fresh look: Use creativity to change your perception of an established travel destination. You might have been to Austria, Thailand, or New Zealand before and found amazing scenery, warm-hearted people, and delightful cuisine in all of them. But have you taken the time to really engage with the people you met and what you saw? Creative travel is so much more than our stereotyped, classroom learning. It is a way of understanding and engaging with the local culture and its people in the most authentic way possible – by active participation in the unique skill set of people in your host destination. Why not take a watercolor painting course, sketching in the Salzburg mountains as part of an organized hiking tour, cooking on the waterside balcony with the chef of your hotel resort in Thailand, or harvest the very Paua shells you are to carve into a unique souvenir at a New Zealand beach?
- Allow creative travel to challenge stereotypical thinking. Your attitude is key. Do you think that the Tango is only for machos wanting sex with any woman traveler? Forget it: real tango goes way beyond its common misconceptions of eroticism, and is a most beautiful dance. Do you think all Austrian women dance to the Sound of Music in Dirndl dresses? That's a film. The reality is that women often make their dresses and you can learn how to make one as well. Experiencing the creative side of a culture gives you a real feel for what it is like to be in a particular place, contributing to the positive economic and social forces tourism can have on the societies we visit.
- And finally, if everything I’ve written above doesn’t move you, here is my last tip : Dare to be different . Go solo to a creative destination. Honestly, please do. You are never really on your own. There is nothing to fear when creating something new. And there is no better way to connect with new travel companions than a hands-on, entertaining, creative workshop that also makes a difference to the locals you meet by respecting their cultural beliefs and supporting their economy.
Follow Your Interests
Follow your passion. If you love art, try making some. If you are wild about wine, take a course on tasting, go and work in a vineyard, or learn how to make quality wine yourself. If you're passionate about food, take a cooking course in the origins of your favorite cuisines.
Follow your inspiration. Who, after watching the film Ghost , didn't think that pottery would be a hobby to take up? Film, books, poetry: all of these can inspire one to a creative trip.
Where to Find Creative Travel Opportunities Around the World
“So tell me this, Elena: Where can I do creative travel around the world?” This is the tip you have all been waiting for. Now, if there was to be a complete directory of all creative destinations around the globe, I would be certain to share it with you right away! As the concept is still evolving there is no such directory but a good starting point is the International Creative Tourism Network . It includes destinations from Morocco to New Mexico, Brazil to Cyprus, Spain to Quebec, and more.
You see, creative travel really is for you to enjoy! Last but not least, I have these wise words for you:
“I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand.” (Confucius)
Sharing is caring!

Creative Travel I A family story since 1977

- Things that make us proud
- Where to find us next
- Responsibility
When we started to write this chapter, it turned out to be a lot harder than we expected. Our father wasn’t driven by the desire to run a business, but rather a passion to show the world the best India had to offer. Ours is a story of a vision, of a passion that went against all conventional norms. Ours is a very personal story.
In the early 1960’s, our father, Ram Kohli, was hired straight out of college by the then largest travel company in India. Impressed by his dedication, his company sent him to Germany to open the first ever office of an Indian travel company in Europe. A young bachelor, he adapted well to a new world. Ram married our mother Deepak in 1968 and soon Rajeev came along. But his company had greater plans and it was off to New York to repeat what he had done in Europe. Not only was Ram tremendously successful in building India as a major brand across the Americas, but also added one more member to the Kohli family in, Rohit.
In 1976, he felt the tug of home. He impulsively quit his job and moved the family back to India that year. To a country that was deeply mired in socialist ideology and a backward economy. We never really got around to asking him why he made the move back home when others from the developing world were trying to immigrate to the West. He was just driven in ways few others were. It takes a different kind of man to uproot his family from a comfortable life to start from the scratch in a new world.
In 1977, out of a garage at home, Creative Travel was founded. With nothing in hand, Ram spent months of the year traveling the world to create a following of partners & friends, many who still work with us today. We still remember the times when we would not hear from him for weeks and his coming home meant the arrival of great presents and many hugs. The travel industry was very different before emails or cell phones. One thing that our parents held dear was the value of education and we were both given the best opportunities they could afford. In 1994 we joined the company after gaining world experiences and have never looked back since then.

Rohit Kohli
Why we tell you this is because Creative Travel is not just a business. It is a family. A family of the Kohlis, a family of our team members, a family of our partners across the world.
We are so very proud to be part of a family legacy of two generations that has showcased this part of the world for close to four decades. We have grown to become a prominent, respected and independent Destination Management Company offering the finest of cultural experiences, personal immersions and natural wonders all over India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Tibet & the Maldives.
We are a company with great influence in the region, with strong industry linkages and unquestionable credibility. Our reputation allows us priority and access at hotels, venues and with other providers and our region. We use our reputation and goodwill to ensure the very best for our partners like you.
We understand the difference between being cheap and offering value. Price is important, but more important is consistency in services and ensuring your guest comes back to you for their next trip. Our team has a strong attention to detail and a desire to question the conventional. They understand the need to be different in what we offer, in the importance of speed in their responses and in being vibrant in their thoughts.
We would give credit for our success to over 150 team members across our system who strive to deliver a flawless, world class destination experience. We recognise that we are only as good as the people that work for us and therefore invest heavily in product training and skill development, the results of which are reflected in the way we treat our partners and in the high levels of guest satisfaction we achieve. At Creative, we have the perfect blend of a professional environment with the governing values of a family run company. The people who work for us are truly amongst the best in the industry.
Every organisation needs a soul, a mission, a foundation. To us, business is about building relationships. Our partners are our family, not numbers. Our travellers are guests, not clients. We do not want to be the largest company in India, just the best. We hold close to our hearts, the values of integrity, of partnership, of quality and of trust – trust of our employees, of our partners, of our travellers. To us, working in this industry is a passion. We love showing the world the amazing sights & sounds that make this region truly incredible.
Ours is a story of passion, of love. Our story is about integrity and values. Our story is about living upto the ideals and learnings given to us by our parents.
Some things are just never to be compromised.
We look forward someday to the opportunity of someday welcoming you to our world, a Creative World.

Get the FREE Guide: How to Connect with Locals in Italy - Click Here!
We help people experience Italy's...
Far flung places, fading traditions, & phenomenal nature, ...through genuine connection with locals..
Creative Edge Travel helps you think outside the guidebook to get off-the-map and into the everyday life of authentic Italy . We create experiences around the passions of our local friends and add our own creative edge to ensure it’s something meaningful and special.
Whether in the rarely-visited mountains of Tuscany or the hidden corners of Sicily, off-the-beaten-path is what we do. We know you can get yourself to the David or the Colosseum (and you should) but our focus is bringing travelers deeper into the everyday life of Italy , where our friends and artisans are waiting to share their way of life with you.
WHY WE DO IT
W e think getting off-the-beaten-path helps the world become a place that respects and protects the wisdom held within the roots of its cultures. It lessens the strain on overtouristed destinations and spreads the economic opportunity to smaller communities. It helps keep fading traditions and villages alive! And if we can help with that , well we're all in! Are you?
WHEN YOU TRAVEL WITH US, YOU ALSO..
help keep fading traditions and villages alive,
lessen the strain on overtouristed cities,
bring economic opportunity to smaller communities,
and promote sustainable tourism!
THE CREATIVE EDGE EXPERIENCE

We invite our Italian friends to hang out with us so you'll have opportunities to get to know locals in a relaxed atmosphere.
Free time to Make Your Own Discoveries

Opportunities to Connect with Nature
We believe you can't truly understand a culture until you understand the landscape that inspired it all.
Pre-trip Resources to Put It All in Context
You’ll receive information and quick language tips so by the time you lay eyes on your first gelateria , you’ll be able to order in Italian.
Sierra Busch
If there’s one thing Italy has taught me, it’s that life can be so damn good when you let yourself truly live it. From my first taste of la dolce vita in 2011, I've never stopped exploring its many regions. From the tall mountains in the north to the sunny heel of the boot in the south, I scoured maps for Italy's hidden secrets, connecting with locals and soaking up the authentic everyday life along the way. This passion led to a career in travel in NYC, where I worked for top agencies and startups, planning luxury vacations for VIP clients. But I felt there was always something not quite right when these high end clients cared more about the size of the bathroom than what lie outside their door. Now my goal is to bring my guests meaningful travel experiences that will forever connect them to the genuine spirit of Italy that so many others miss.
FRIENDS & PARTNERS
From our group of friends in Apulia who love to go to Pizzica folk dance events to the wonderful family in Florence that feeds us heaps of homemade food each time we visit, our Italian friends and partners are truly like family. We are so lucky to work with such warm and generous souls, and they, too, feel happy for the opportunity to share their world with curious guests.
FROM THE FOUNDER
Hi! My name is Sierra Busch and I design cultural immersion trips for those who want to get off-the-beaten-path in Italy and connect with the local experience .
In 2011, I chose to study art in a tiny, hilltop town in Tuscany. I loved the cobblestone streets and the patchwork views that went forever. I loved getting to know the man who would sell me my vegetables and the woman who scooped my gelato. And I loved who I was there, a new and exciting side of myself laying dormant for all my life.
Being able to speak the language opened doors to experiences I never imagined I'd have. I had discovered a way of living so beautiful that I couldn’t stop thinking about it. My roommate even told me that I spoke Italian in my sleep. I returned again and again, traveling to different regions and scouring maps to find the most beautiful villages no one had ever heard of.
It was then that I started to dream. I saw so many tourists making a beeline for just the famous sites...They'd raise their cameras without ever actually taking in the scene themselves and connecting with the context and history. I knew how meaningful their travels could be if they only knew how to access the authentic Italy that I'd been so lucky to know.
So I began a career in travel in NYC, where I worked for top agencies and startups, planning luxury vacations for VIP clients. I worked for a tour operator in Southern Italy. And just for the fun of it, I started a group called Travelistas United for other women entrepreneurs in travel which has grown to 430+ members.
Living half the year in Italy and the other half at home in the Appalachian mountains, my goal is to bring my guests meaningful travel experiences that will forever connect them to the genuine spirit of Italy that so many never quite reach.
I want to help you experience Italy's far-flung places, fading traditions, and phenomenal nature through genuine connection with locals. I hope you'll join me in seeing what emerges in bella Italia...

If I could give this place no stars, I would not hesitate to do so! I came here today to get some tour packages to Asia & Europe for my parents. The manager 'Sunny' was so outright rude and I couldn't believe how poor his customer service is. After all, it IS a travel agency and they DO make money from commission. He failed to give me any decent price quotes. He demanded I know exact details of when and where I want to go. There are people who know what they want and plenty of people come into an agency not knowing what exactly they are looking for - hence the reason for why the come in! He complained that my needs were too broad and that he could not help in any way. After I told him my max. / person was $2,500 he got friendlier because the price was so high. He even offered a discount if 10 or more were going but for a total of $25,000 I could take those 10 people and make my own tour. Ugh, I am never coming back here and I do NOT recommend you go to this agency for any travel needs. I almost cried because I was so angry leaving this place.
This place is amazing! After using them a couple of times (and referring friends to them), I have no problem recommending this business to the yelp community. They are located inside the Pacific Rim Center; downstairs from New Hong Kong Restaurant (formerly New Kowloon) & LA Cafe. The people there speak English, Chinese (Cantonese & Mandarin) & Vietnamese. They specialize in travels to Asia (more specifically SE Asia). They're fast and have been very pleasant to work with. I have never gotten plane tickets from there; only used them for visa services. I've heard that their airfare prices are very reasonable, though. They've helped me get visas to Vietnam. For $50, I can get a single entry. For $100, I can get a 5-year multiple entry visa!! (These prices are for those who were born in VN, a little higher if you're not.) This includes having them take a digital picture, make a photocopy of my passport (I get to keep it), and them filling out the form for me. What happens next is that they send the picture and application to the Vietnam consulate in MEXICO to get the biz done. I got the visa back within the week (applied Monday night and got it back Friday morning). It came in the form of a piece of pink paper with my picture on it, which is then paper clipped onto the passport; very legit, though. :) My brother got his 5-year multiple entry from here, too, and was very pleased with the quick and friendly service.
We used this travel agency once a few yrs back since my husband & I were looking for vacation packages to Asia. This review is for back then, so not sure how it is now...but wanted to YELP anyways since the international tour agencies associated with Creative Tours & Travel are the ones I want to give my thoughts. Helpful or not, gotta put it out there. In general, when we were there looking, the owner, I'm assuming was pretty accommodating. We told him of the countries we would like to travel & he gave us some options and costs. We ended up choosing this package that included Thailand (BKK, Pattaya), Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong for $1700 pp for a 13 day trip. (But in actuality, it was a 10 day trip since 3 of those days would be travel time) This was our first time traveling together and on a tour and when reading the itinerary of the places we would go, we really thought this package was a great deal and purchased it. When we arrived to Thailand, the tour guide, Pinit was so nice. We were in a group of 8 and he really went far and beyond in making sure we see what's on the itinerary and even more. He got us quick accesses to clubs & bars without waiting in line. He was always making jokes. Of course some of the bars that we went to, I can do without the topless girls, but I was in a group with single guys, along with my hubby, and at that point, I just wanted a drink...apparently I'm the "cool wife". If you ever tour Thailand, I would definitely recommend Pinit. We still have his contact info. Anyways, we were going to our next leg of the trip (Singapore) and Pinit not only dropped us off, he actually walked us all the way to the check in counter, and while he was helping us check in, he somehow managed to upgrade our ticket to business class for free, which was awesome. Arriving in Singapore, we were there for a day and a half. The tour guide, which I can't remember his name felt like he was in a rush, and I could understand since we were there for such a short time, however, with him rushing us from one destination on the itinerary to the next, was exhausting. We just got off our flight, and literally had no time to rest since he wanted to get us to wherever. He was walking so fast, I think at one point, we nearly lost him. He even tried to be funny, but personally his joke dealt with making sure we leave a tip, which is my ultimate pet peeve. Our next trip was to Malaysia and we had to ride the bus. It wasn't too bad. At least we were able to get on an air conditioned bus since the weather in Singapore and Malaysia is pretty hot. Our tour guide Dominic was very nice. He's an elderly gentleman, but managed to do his best to show us around, and even took us to places that isn't on the itinerary. For meals, he took us to little "hole in the wall" restaurants, and you know how authentic the food is, so it was a definite plus. Even when he took us to the airport so that we can head to our last leg of our trip, he was so nice to make sure the ticket agent upgraded our seats, and again, we got business class. In Hong Kong, as much as we enjoyed exploring the many street food corners, bargaining in the street market on our own, the tour guide that we had..I think her name is either Judy or Julie, a middle-aged lady...she was a total bitch since the moment we arrived. On the itinerary sheet, it said to meet at a certain entrance in front of a certain gate, which we did. We waited for nearly 15-20 min and we finally decided to call the number on the sheet. They were able to contact the tour guide & she met us where we were at. Instead of being nice, or apologetic...she snapped at us for waiting in the wrong area, and told us she had other tourists on the bus waiting for us. I was so not having it with her attitude & showed her the sheet and told her if plans were changed, it wasn't updated on our sheet, and that I didn't like her being rude to us. She didn't know what to say and hurried us along. Another thing that got me pissy was her making sure people on the bus leave the recommended 7% tip after the tour is over. She took us to a couple of sights, but if you want to see more, you have to pay more. Instead, my hubby & I decided to have them drop us off near our hotel & we did our own touring around. On the last day, the tour guide dropped us off at the airport & reminded us about her tip. I told her off saying how she doesn't even deserve the 7% tip since she gave crappy service, plus it's unprofessional of her to keep mentioning about it. Seriously, you give shitty service, you get shit back. Despite this downside, it was a good trip--a little fast (like the Amazing Race). Some of the agencies associated with Creative Tours need better tour guides, or train them to NOT TALK about TIPPING. I don't know if I'll ever use this travel agency again, but you never know.
I have never been compelled to Yelp anything before, but the terrible, frustrating, stress inducing process I just went through with this place makes me feel like it would be a disservice NOT to say anything! I was referred to Sunny at Creative Travel for the purpose of processing my Visa to spend 6 months in China. When I walked in to the office I was hardly given a nod, and I had to wait 30 minutes to talk to Sunny, because the 2 other women who worked there didn't speak enough English to help me. I filled out the paperwork, and he said it would take 2 weeks. That was in mid December. Today is January 25. When my Visa hadn't arrived by the time I needed to leave for a trip to Canada for New Years Eve I asked for my passport back so that I could go away for the weekend -- he charged me $50. Then, when the agency who was processing my Visa in San Francisco rejected my application there was a fiasco getting the proper paperwork to them. Sunny provided my contact in China with the WRONG ADDRESS to deliver the proper papers to, and as a result the papers were sent back. Then Sunny told me I had to call the DHL office MYSELF to give them the correct address. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!?!?! I was paying this man to handle my Visa process and not only did he provide wrong information, he then made it MY responsibility to fix it. FINALLY, when the papers were all in their right place, and 4 weeks into this process, it was only 2 weeks until the date that I was flying out. I asked if it would be ready in time. He said I could expedite for an additional $30. So today, I picked up my Visa, and have so far paid in total $240 and spent nearly 6 weeks on a process that costs $160 and takes 2 weeks. Not to mention that Sunny is rude, unprofessional, and treats his mistakes as if they are the customers fault. Also, all he did was send my paperwork to a different Visa service in San Francisco, who I could've gone directly through myself and save time money and 18 different headaches. Never ever ever ever use this service.
This travel agency is not a good customer service and skills. They just wanted the money but not the worked. The ticket was issued by them, when it come to problem they didn't really want to deal with it. I got push to deal with the problem myself. There were times which we requested the change of the Itinerary and it took me to call them several times before it can be changed. I wouldn't want to go back with this particular agent... very bad service.
I don't trust this place. They always seem to charge you more at the end than what you agreed to pay originally. If you pay by credit card, make sure you look at your statement. I am not coming back here anymore. This place is willing to sacrifice its reputation for just a small price. Try the one down the street from this place @ the corner of 10th and Jackson called Ocean Pacific travel next time.
