Car parking at Werribee Zoo

Werribee Open Range Zoo has two main car parks, both of which are free for visitors.

On weekends, and school holidays the car parks fill up pretty quickly.

On busy days traffic wardens assist vehicles entering and exiting the Zoo.

However, be ready for long queues while entering.

There are accessible parking bays near the main entrance of the Werribee Open Range Zoo.

The Werribee Zoo opens at 9 am and closes at 5 pm, every day of the year.

Entry closes at 3.30 pm, which is why it is essential to reach the Zoo early.

The best time to visit Werribee Zoo is as soon as they open at 9 am.

There are four advantages of starting early – the animals are most active, the temperatures are still moderate, the crowd is yet to get in and you have the whole day to explore.

If you are driving to the Werribee Zoo, you also benefit by getting a car parking spot closer to the entrance.

It is best to be at Werribee Zoo early in the morning because you can then also see the lion cubs, which are available for viewing only till noon.

The last safari bus tour of the Zoo leaves at 3.30 pm – yet another reason why it is best to start your tour of Werribee Zoo early.

If you are a group of adults in a hurry, you can finish exploring Werribee Zoo in two hours.

Groups with kids need around four to five hours to explore Werribee Open Range Zoo fully.

Of these five hours, one hour is spent on the standard Safari bus tour, which is free with the Zoo’s entry tickets.

And then there are keeper talks to attend, feeding sessions to participate in and lots of animal exhibits to see.

Werribee Zoo tour duration

If you choose to upgrade to an Off-Road Safari experience , you will need 90 minutes extra.

At Werribee Zoo, Melbourne visitors get an intimate experience with both the animals and the zookeepers.

The keepers know everything about the animals inhabiting the Zoo and are more than happy to share stories during the keeper talks.

During the week, the keeper talks start at 10 am.

The talks continue all through the day, one animal at a time.

Starting from Meerkat at 10 am, you can listen to ‘Crazy about Cats’ at 11 am, Lions at 11.30 am, Hippos at 1.10 pm and Gorillas at 1.45 pm.

During weekends and school holidays, an additional keeper talk is scheduled at 1.30 – about the Eastern Barred Bandicoots.

Tip: While visiting the Zoo, keep an ear out for PA announcements which announce additional talks.

Kids activities at Werribee Zoo

The Werribee Zoo offers terrific activities for children.

Here are some adventures your kid can participate in –

Junior Safari at Werribee Zoo

Junior Safari at Werribee Open Range Zoo is a fun-filled 35-minutes safari bus tour for kids and their families.

It includes a lot of music and animal sighting.

You don’t need to buy any tickets for this kids Safari – it is part of the general admission ticket.

However, since this is in high demand, you need to reach the Zoo early to ensure a seat on the safari bus.

Junior Safaris start at 10 am, from Monday to Friday. On Weekends and school holidays, they stand canceled.

Ranger Kids at Werribee Zoo

Another fantastic activity for kids at the Werribee zoo is the indoor play area called ‘Ranger Kids.’

Here, the kids get an opportunity to dress and enact as wildlife rangers, vets, and various animals and get a real taste of the jungle life.

There are three play areas at the Ranger Kids:

– The African village – The Savannah – A field hospital

Your general admission ticket gets you access to this kids section as well.

The attraction is open every day of the week –  12.30 pm to 2.30 pm on weekdays and 10.30 am to 2.30 pm on weekends.

The Village dance party is the Zoo’s interactive musical dance theatre that indulges children with songs created by Melbourne musician Lamine Sonco.

African village party at Werribee Zoo

The general admission ticket gets you to access the Dance Party as well.

The Village Dance Party is open from 10 am to 2 pm, from Monday to Friday.

On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, from 9.15 am onwards, children can get an out of the box experience by pretending to be real-life Zookeepers.

This activity is an excellent opportunity for your five years, or younger kid to experience how the Zoo works.

This kid activity is NOT part of the general admission ticket of Werribee Zoo.

You must pay an additional fee of 36 AUD per child.

The Melbourne Open Range Zoo is full of activities, and play areas all around the Zoo.

Even if you don’t want to commit to any specific activity, you can still give your child a fun experience with these small play spaces.

Monkey Rope Play is our personal favorite for one can swing from tree to tree.

Or the children can act like little adventurers and dig up fossils in the sandy dig pit.

Summer is full of water activities in the Hippo Water Play.

Water play for kids at Werribee Zoo

Splash and have fun in the water for hours and make the best of the hot summer day.

Don’t forget to bring a change of clothes.

Another fantastic play area is the Meerkat-themed play space, located near the Meerkat Bistro.

While the parents relax at the Meerkat Bistro, the children can enjoy the play area.

Walking trails at Werribee Zoo

The Werribee Open Range Zoo has beautiful trails that give an inside peep into the African wildlife.

This 1000-meter-long trail takes approximately 60 minutes to cover.

On this walking trail, you get a glimpse of the African village created by the Zoo and beautiful animals, such as lions, hippos, cheetahs, monkeys, gorillas, etc.

If you want a short and to-the-point trip to the Zoo, then the Australian trail is perfect for you.

In 20 minutes, you can cover this 500-meter long trail and see Kangaroos, Brolgas and Emus in the grassland, Koalas on the trees and Bandicoots in their hideout.

This walking trail at Werribee Zoo closes at 4.30 pm.

Another beautiful path is the 1000 meters long WirribiYaluk trail, which takes about 35 minutes.

You get to see the historic Chirnside Woolshed and the lively Werribee River.

This pathway also closes at 4.30 pm.

Werribee Zoo animals

Animals at Werribee Zoo

The Werribee Open Range Zoo offers the whole range of African Wildlife for its visitors.

The general admission ticket gets you to access all animals at the Werribee Zoo.

There are many ways you can touch base with the animals in Werribee Zoo – through Safaris, trail walks, animal exhibits, keeper talks, play areas, etc.

Different parts of the Werribee Zoo expose you to different animals.

When on this trail you get to see some of the best animals the Zoo has.

On the African River trail, visitors can see animals such as lions, hippos, cheetahs, monkeys, gorillas, African Wild Dog, Serval, Vervet Monkey, Leopard Tortoise, Meerkat, etc.

While on the Outback you can spot animals such as the Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Southern Koalas, Emus, Brolgas,  Eastern Barred Bandicoot, Orange-bellied Parrot, etc.

Koalas at Werribee Zoo

Another opportunity is to walk along the banks of the Werribee River and learn about its unique ecosystem involving birds, reptiles, and mammals.

Giraffe at Werribee Zoo

The Safari drive through the Savannah helps you see unique animals such as Camel, American Bison, Southern White Rhinoceros, Plains Zebra, Przewalski’s Horses, Giraffe, Ostrich, Scimitar-horned Oryx, Blackbuck, Eland, Nyala, Addax, etc. Image: Zoo.org.au

On the WirribiYaluk River trail, you can spot birds such as Emus, Brolgas etc.

Since it is so massive, it is best to keep the Werribee Zoo map handy during your visit.

The Werribee Zoo’s map can help you plan your route and also ensure you don’t miss out any animal exhibit.

It will also be useful to rush from one Keeper Talk to another because they always happen in the respective animal enclosures.

Besides the animal exhibits, the Zoo’s map also points out visitor services such as restaurants, washrooms, ATMs, picnic areas, free WiFIs, etc.

We recommend you bookmark this page or keep a printed copy of the map while exploring the Zoo.

Safari Bus at Werribee Zoo

The best part of the zoo is the free safari bus trip as it is unique. The bus goes through paddock which contain African herbivores such as zebra’s, hippos, rhinos. There are also enclosures with the usually African animals such as lions.

Spent an afternoon having a look around Werribee Park Zoo , very informitive , also went on the tour bus , which was great to see all the animals roaming around , got some great snaps .

My friend and I took 6 children to Werribee Zoo during the school holidays. I was amazed to find children were free during school holidays ( I believe this also applies to weekends and public holidays!) The safari tour is excellent, we were able to get great photos of the animals, if your lucky they come up to the bus!! The food is costly, but all zoo's are, so why not pack a picnic and make a great day of it. It's only a half hour from the city providing traffic is favorable!! Highly recommended!!

Werribee zoo was quite a surprise to me. I hadn't been here since school over ten years ago. The entry was well priced and all the exhibits were well kept. The animals looked happy. Included in the price is a drive arou d the many acres of open parkland where animals from all over the world are allowed to roam free, rather than be confined to a tiny exhibit.

Quite a distance to drive from Melbourne City, and not cheap. WE werer wuite dissapointed in the what the zoo had to offer in comaprison with other similar type of free range zoos that we have visited. The food and drink was also expensive and very average in quality.

Totally blown away. I was expecting something like Busch's Gardens, but this was something else. At first, it's a stock standard zoo with larger enclosures. Nice, but nothing amazing. Then they take you onto the truck, and that's when things get awesome. I'll never forget seeing a Rhino in FULL GALLOP take on one of the pickup trucks working on the site. You'll never see that in another zoo in your life. It's far out of the city but well worth the visit.

There’s three young giraffes for you to look out for, aged one and two years old, as well as other herds of animals, like rhinos and zebras. You’ll also see Scimitar-horned oryx calves, an antelope species that’s fighting its way back from extinction in the wild.

“Being on the savannah in the evening is beautiful, and we hope that builds a connection with wildlife and inspires future conservation heroes,” said Werribee Open Range Zoo Director Dr Mark Pilgrim.

After checking out the safari, venture along the walking trail and see meerkats, monkeys, wild dogs and a lion pride with three growing cubs.

1) Will the Werribee zoo open tomorrow (31.12.2020)? 2) Can we (3 persons without booking) come to the Zoo and pay at the entrance? 3) Is there any discount for Victorian Senior Card holders?

Thanks for your question. I have answered each below:

1) Will the Werribee zoo open tomorrow (31.12.2020)? Yes, the Werribee Open Range Zoo is open every day of the year.

2) Can we (3 persons without booking) come to the Zoo and pay at the entrance? Not at the moment. Due to COVID restrictions, “everyone (including Zoo Members and babies) needs to have a pre-booked zoo ticket before you arrive at the zoo. You will not be able to book tickets at the gate.” You can buy tickets at https://www.zoo.org.au/werribee/whats-on/events/entry/ , and kids are currently free during school holidays.

3) Is there any discount for Victorian Senior Card holders? Yes, the Senior tickets cost $34, which is $4 cheaper than the adult tickets at $38.

Hope this helps and have a great day.

Thanks Michael

Hello, is the Werribee zoo open on Good Friday?

Looking up the hours on the zoo’s website, it’s stated that the zoo is open from 9am-5pm every day of the year, so it doesn’t appear that Good Friday is any exception,

Have a great day out!

I love Rhinos and would love to get close up (I love to pat but understand if this is not allowed), even if I can’t get up close I’d love to see them.

If you want to get up close to the rhinos at Werribee Open Range Zoo, I suggest you take the Off Road Safari Tour. I have searched around and this experience is currently on sale through Klook which you can purchase here .

Best regards, Jess

Hi there, i am bringing my grandson to your zoo on the 21st september, i have booked for the 1.5 hour safari, but i have been told that i have to book to see other attractions like lions edge etc, can you also please let me know the prices of said events.. i am a concession and my grandson is 13 … This is his first trip from Queensland so i want to make it a memorable one for both of us.. thankyou

Hi Barbara,

You can wander through the zoo as per normal, with all animals available for viewing with your general admission ticket. However, there are a number of “up close” experiences which you can pay for in addition to your general admission which do need to be booked in advance.

These close encounters include the “African Cat Encounter” , the “Gorilla Encounter” and the “Giraffe Feed Encounter” .

Click the links I have provided for pricing for each encounter.

Have a great time at the Werribee Open Range Zoo! Jess

Hi hope you are well Q.?How do you book the concession tickets Chris

Concession tickets can be purchased here.

Have a great time at Werribee Zoo! Jess

My husband is in wheelchair (can’t walk at all) and we would love to visit Werribee Zoo. It says that safari trip are cater for people with disability, so I am wondering whether he will be ok to visit the zoo?

Hi Katerina, thanks for your question.

The Werribee Open Range Zoo has an easy-to-follow pathway system, with access for people using wheelchairs. All the main areas of the park are fitted with ramps where required, but the pathways are very flat and easily navigated by wheelchair. There are also accessible toilets located at the main entrance, in the Meerkat Bistro and at the Safari Station.

The Safari Tour is also wheelchair accessible with ramp access. There are four wheelchair-accessible Safari buses which can fit two wheelchairs each. The wheelchairs are accommodated at the front of the vehicles alongside the driver and will be safely strapped in. You can ring ahead to make a booking if you wish (03 9731 9610), or simply contact the safari staff as you arrive and they will assist you with boarding.

Werribee Zoo also offers free entry for carers accompanying a person with a disability who is a holder of a Disability Pension Card or a Companion Card. So make sure to take that card with you. Also, there are accessible parking bays near the main entrance of the Werribee Open Range Zoo.

Have a great time at Werribee Zoo! Kind regards, Jess

Hello, I have a disability and I have a walker to help me but I cant walk very far and I want to see your amazing african animals. Is there anyway of getting around the grounds without walking to much? Also, I want to go on the off road safari that costs $55.00. Can I just go on there and pay or do I have to book in advance? The reason I ask is because I also get dizzy sometimes and I dont know how I will feel on the day. If I do pay in advance but can’t go on the safari, would I get a refund?

Get in touch with Zoos Victoria, as they are able to offer mobile guided tours which are free where up to three passengers can be taken around the zoo in an electric golf cart. Tours last up to 1.5 hours. Advance bookings are required via (03) 9731 9610.

As for the off road tour, bookings should be made in advance as if there are insufficient numbers, the tour can be cancelled. Zoos Victoria advise the following cancellation policy: “Cancellation policy In the event that you cancel your animal encounter the following cancellation applies: Bookings cancelled at least 30 days prior to event date will be given a full refund. Cancellations between 14 and 30 days prior to the event date incur a 50% cancellation fee. Bookings cancelled within 14 days of the event date incur a 100% cancellation fee.”

So unfortunately, if you book the tour but are unable to attend, it seems you will not be entitled to a refund. I would however speak to someone at Zoos Victoria about your situation, as some discretion may be applied if you pull out for medical reasons. You can call them to make your booking and discuss the cancellation policy on 1300 966 784.

Have a wonderful day at Werribee Open Range Zoo!

Kind regards, Jess

Regarding the Slumber Safari, do we have to pay individually (it said $320/adult) apart from the $640/lodge? Thank you.

You only need to pay $320 per adult – total of $640.

The booking requires a minimum of $640 per tent, so having 2 people satisfies that condition.

Have a great time!

Regards, Jess

Melbourne Zoo has Asian elephants but is there anywhere I can see African elephants?

Unfortunately none of the Zoos in Victoria host African Elephants. Apparently Toronga Zoo in Sydney has one African elephant, there don’t seem to be many in Australia.

Hi just wondering if Carer’s pay to get in? What is difference between Senior’s & Concession? Thanks

Hi Michelle,

There is free entry for carers accompanying a person with a disability who is a holder of a Child Disability Allowance Health Care Card, a Disability Pension Card or a Companion Card. There is also a 10% discount for holder of a Carer Card NOT accompanying a person with a disability.

The difference between concession and seniors is as follows: Seniors is for people over 60 years of age who have a Seniors Card. Concession is for people with an Australian Pensioner Concession Card, full-time student card, Healthcare Card, Disability Concession Card, or DVA Gold Card.

Hope this clarifies things for you! Regards, Jess

Are there Tasmanian devils here?

Unfortunately no. The Tasmanian Devils are not located at Werribee or Melbourne Zoos. They are however located at Healeasville Sanctuary.

If you are still interested in attending Werribee Zoo, you can purchase tickets here .

If you would like to visit Healesville Sanctuary to see the Devils, you an purchase tickets here .

When is The best month to visit? Are all the animal’s out in the colder months or is better to visit in the summer?

The animals are out all year round, but as it is an open range zoo, they will do what animals want to do! So if its a particularly hot day, you might find them in the shade or wallowing in a mud bath. If its cold and rainy, they might seek shelter under a tree.

Keep in mind that most are African animals, so the sunshine is their friend. I would go in Spring or Summer as a cold rainy Melbourne day isn’t much fun to be outside in.

If you have kids, just note that weekends and school holidays are FREE for them and you only have to pay for adult tickets. Great value!

Have a great day at the Werribee Open Range Zoo!
