Bruce Springsteen in Croke Park review: Blockbuster performance closes Irish tour on an emotion-filled evening

Bruce springsteen turns the famous stadium into a field of dreams with an outpouring of love and devotion from 80,000 fans.

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band

Croke park, dublin.

Bruce Springsteen and Croke Park prove a match forged in stadium rock heaven as America’s blue-collar bard closes out his Irish tour with a blockbuster performance. Hurtling through a lifetime of hits, Springsteen turns the huge concrete bowl into a field of dreams while his audience repays his sweat and tears with an outpouring of love and devotion.

Croker and Bruce bring out the best of each other. One is an iconic structure that’s been around for decades, the other a sports complex on the north side of Dublin. But both loom over their immediate hinterland, the shadow cast by Springsteen seeming to grow longer and deeper as he proceeds through his 70s with a vigour that’s striking to witness up close.

The singer is, at 74, shockingly sprightly throughout an emotion-filled evening. Much has been written about his fitness routine: his one-meal-a-day regime, a strict rule against eating after 4pm. Whatever nutritional sorcery is at play, it works, and he leads the E Street Band through a full-throated and punchy show under blazing blue May skies.

If Springsteen is a maverick, he’s never been a one-man band. The gang’s all here at Croke Park on an evening that marks the one millionth ticket sold by Springsteen in Ireland, since his debut at Slane in 1985. Nils Lofgren and Steve Van Zandt are his two-man guitar army; the zinging saxophone fills are courtesy of Jake Clemons, nephew of Springsteen’s late comrade-in-arms Clarence Clemons.

He starts with a surprise – Lonesome Day, a brisk chugger from his 2002 return-to-form LP The Rising. There are lots of other Easter eggs for die-hards: a blistering Two Hearts from The River, a poignant Ghosts from 2020′s Letter To You, Darlington County from Born In the USA, with its epic sha-la-la refrain.

Springsteen is in good spirits. He rushes the barricades again and again, like a character from one of his songs chasing their dreams into the horizon. These interactions appear to bring him as much joy as the music.

At one point he singles out a young fan near the front and sings along with her. Later, he descends from the mountain once again and pops on a flatcap that makes him look like Cillian Murphy’s dad from Peaky Blinders.

Banter is at a minimum. “Good evening Dublin, we have come to rock you,” he says at the start. Springsteen also reveals the mayor of his hometown of Freehold, New Jersey, is in attendance.

It’s just over a year since Springsteen put in a Herculean shift across the river at the RDS. That gig was followed by a peptic ulcer diagnosis that forced him to cancel months of touring and which, at its worst, left Springsteen unable to sing.

While he has returned with striking vitality, the cold touch of mortality can nonetheless be felt at Croke Park “The grief that we feel is the price we pay for having loved well,” he says at one point. He circles back around to the theme of love and loss during the encore with a cover of The Pogues’ A Rainy Night in Soho – a tribute to the late Shane MacGowan.

Still, it isn’t the sadness that stands out as much as the sheer joy. The final run of songs, performed under the floodlights, is a landslide of nostalgia. Born To Run is a slaloming speed run through the American dream; he careens through Dancing In The Dark and it is a moment of unabashed celebration.

Then he plunges into a Godzilla-sized cover of Twist and Shout, as made famous by The Beatles. Approaching the midpoint of his seventies, Springsteen surely can’t have all that many more world tours left in him. But as 80,000 people join in on the chorus, it is hard not to feel the love between the singer and audience will live forever.

Stadium Full Of Stars! Who is supporting Coldplay in Dublin?

croke park stadium tour review

It seems like just yesterday that we were in the trenches trying to get our hands on Coldplay tickets more than a year in advance of their gigs but alas, we are now a mere three months away from welcoming the beloved band back to the Emerald Isle.

The band, fronted by Chris Martin, is set to play Dublin's Croke Park on August 29 and 30 and September 1 and 2.

Their electrifying Music of the Spheres Tour, which kicked off in March 2022, has become world-renowned with Coldplay selling over nine million tickets, making it the most popular tour in the past two years.

The Music of the Spheres World Tour has garnered praise from both fans and critics, earning the band accolades such as Favorite Touring Artist at the 2022 AMAs and Tour of The Year at the 2023 iHeartRadio Awards.

Coldplay recently announced Maggie Rogers and Aby Coulibaly as their support acts for Dublin, with Maggie also performing for Coldplay fans in Munich and Vienna.

Aby previously told EVOKE of finding out she would be supporting Coldplay at Croke Park: 'I was trying to keep my mouth shut, it was such a huge thing that I didn't want to jinx it. I generally don't speak about things until they're confirmed.'

'I said it to my mam just to let her know it was a possible thing that could happen and she was buzzing, then I said it to my sister and she cried. It wasn't even confirmed at that stage!'

Coldplay's Irish fans were put on an emotional rollercoaster back in July over tickets for the band's Dublin gigs.

First there was the drama around the presale tickets that came complete with accusations of Ticketmaster's site crashing before the tickets were released ( Ticketmaster subsequently denied this to EVOKE ), along with lengthy queues.

PASADENA, CALIFORNIA - SEPTEMBER 30: (L-R) Jonny Buckland, Will Champion, Chris Martin and Guy Berryman of Coldplay perform onstage at Rose Bowl Stadium on September 30, 2023 in Pasadena, California. (Photo by Monica Schipper/Getty Images)

It looked like fans' patience would finally be rewarded when a third and fourth Dublin date was added, but it later began to feel like Groundhog Day for many as fans became enraged after failing to secure tickets once more.

MCD officially announced that all four Dublin dates had sold out on July 28 and those desperately hitting refresh at home had plenty to say after missing out on tickets yet again.

However, Ticketmaster has officially started the resale of unwanted tickets. Run and keep refreshing!

See Pro-Shot Video Of AC/DC's Concert In Seville, Spain During 2024 'Power Up' European Tour

The Europa Press Andalucía   YouTube channel has uploaded professionally filmed video of AC/DC performing the song "If You Want Blood (You've Got It)" earlier tonight (Wednesday, May 29) at Estadio La Cartuja in Seville, Spain. Check it out below.

The setlist for the show was as follows, according to Setlist.fm :

01. If You Want Blood (You've Got It) 02. Back In Black 03. Demon Fire 04. Shot Down In Flames 05. Thunderstruck 06. Have A Drink On Me 07. Hells Bells 08. Shot In The Dark 09. Stiff Upper Lip 10. Shoot To Thrill 11. Sin City 12. Rock 'N' Roll Train 13. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap 14. High Voltage 15. Riff Raff 16. You Shook Me All Night Long 17. Highway To Hell 18. Whole Lotta Rosie 19. Let There Be Rock

20. T.N.T. 21. For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)

The "Power Up" European tour marks AC/DC 's first with the band's new touring lineup consisting of singer Brian Johnson , guitarists Angus and Stevie Young , drummer Matt Laug and the latest addition to the group's touring lineup, bassist Chris Chaney .

The 24-date trek will run through August. The trek will hit the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Switzerland before landing at London's Wembley Stadium for a pair of shows on July 3 and 7, then moving on to Germany, Slovakia and Paris and winding down at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland. The European tour is the first run of gigs since AC/DC 's return to the stage at last year's rock Power Trip festival in Indio, California.

AC/DC 's last tour took place in 2015 and 2016 and had a $180 million gross, with 2,310,061 sold tickets reported to the Pollstar box office.

Laug is an American drummer who has played with many bands/artists such as Alanis Morissette , Alice Cooper , SLASH'S SNAKEPIT and Vasco Rossi . Matt moved to Los Angeles after graduating from South Florence High School in 1986 and after attending college in L.A., Matt became a sought-after studio drummer.

In 2001, Laug supported AC/DC as part of SLASH'S SNAKEPIT on the North American and European legs of the "Stiff Upper Lip" tour.

In its announcement about Laug 's addition to the band's Power Trip lineup, AC/DC offered no explanation for the absence of the band's longtime drummer Phil Rudd , who rejoined AC/DC for the recording of the group's comeback album, "Power Up" , which came out in November 2020.

Rudd was ousted from AC/DC when he was sentenced to eight months of home detention by a New Zealand court in 2015 after pleading guilty to charges of threatening to kill and drug possession. He was replaced on the band's "Rock Or Bust" tour by Chris Slade , who had previously served as AC/DC 's drummer between 1989 and 1994, playing on the album "The Razor's Edge" .

Rudd , who appeared on all but three of AC/DC 's 18 previous studio albums, toured in support of his 2014 solo debut, "Head Job" . It was the release of that album that led indirectly to Rudd 's arrest, with the drummer allegedly so angry at a personal assistant over the way the record was promoted that he threatened to have the man and his daughter killed.

AC/DC postponed the last 10 dates of its spring 2016 North American trek after Johnson was advised to stop playing live or "risk total hearing loss." The band went on to complete the European and North American legs of its "Rock Or Bust" tour with GUNS N' ROSES frontman Axl Rose as a "guest vocalist." At the time, Johnson had been AC/DC 's singer for 36 years, ever since replacing the late Bon Scott in 1980 and making his debut on the classic "Back In Black" album.

To enable him to perform live with AC/DC again, the now-76-year-old Johnson worked with audio expert Stephen Ambrose , who said he could help resolve the singer's hearing problems.

Ambrose , who invented the wireless in-ear monitors that are widely used by touring artists today, claimed to have invented a new type of ear-bud that would allow Johnson to perform without causing further damage to his eardrums. After three years of experimenting and "miniaturizing" the equipment, Johnson previously said the technology could allow him to tour again.

Chaney is best known as the bassist of JANE'S ADDICTION and as a member of Alanis Morissette 's touring and recording band. Chaney was also a member of TAYLOR HAWKINS AND THE COATTAIL RIDERS and CAMP FREDDY , as well as being a prolific and versatile session musician, having played with artists including Joe Cocker , Shakira , Slash and Avril Lavigne to Sara Bareilles , Gavin Degraw , Cher , SHINEDOWN and Celine Dion . Chaney is also a founding member and partner in the all-star supergroup ROYAL MACHINES along with Dave Navarro ( JANE'S ADDICTION ), Mark McGrath ( SUGAR RAY ), Josh Freese ( FOO FIGHTERS ) and Billy Morrison ( BILLY IDOL ).

Bassist Cliff Williams announced his retirement at the end of AC/DC 's 2015-2016 "Rock Or Bust" tour, which also saw Johnson leaving. However, Williams — and Johnson — took part in the recording sessions that resulted in "Power Up" . Both of them were also part of the AC/DC lineup that performed at Power Trip .

During an October 2020 interview with Dean Delray 's "Let There Be Talk" podcast, Cliff was asked if Johnson 's departure from the road was what led to his desire to stop touring. Cliff responded: "It was before then. I spoke to Angus about it initially. I was at a point — and this is at the beginning of the 'Rock Or Bust' tour — that I just felt, for me, it was time to hang it up. I knew that I didn't wanna keep doing these two-year tours, and I didn't wanna hold them back, so I made them aware of the fact that this was gonna be my last go-round. It was a tough tour to finish. God bless Axl for coming in and helping us out, finish it up. He did a great job. And at the end of that, I was definitely — that was it for me. Done — just done. That compounded the whole thing."

According to Williams , he wanted to take part in the recording sessions for "Power Up" as a tribute to Angus 's late brother, founding AC/DC rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young , who died in 2017 from effects of dementia at age 64. Malcolm is credited as a writer on all 12 tracks on "Power Up" .

"If 'Back In Black' has [late AC/DC singer] Bon Scott all over it, for me, 'Power Up' has got Malcolm Young ," Cliff said. "This is for him. And it's the band that we played together with for 40-plus years. And I wanted to do that — I wanted to come back and do that.

"We did some rehearsals earlier [in 2020] before this darn COVID thing popped up, and we had great rehearsals," he continued. "The band was playing really well. So [they asked me], 'Do you wanna do a few shows? 'Sure'. A few shows. We were planning on doing that. Everyone goes home to their respective homes, and bang, we've been here ever since [because of the coronavirus-related shutdown]."

Cliff went on to confirm that his commitment to AC/DC was only for "a few" dates in support of "Power Up" .

"For both [my mental and physical] health," he said. "I definitely have some physical issues, which I won't bore you with the details of. But, yeah, it's tough. I'm very grateful for everything. It's been fantastic. But I just don't wanna do that anymore."

Williams previously revealed that a "terrible" bout with vertigo contributed to his 2016 retirement. He also admitted the return of both Johnson and drummer Phil Rudd convinced him to rejoin the group. "It was like the old band back together," he told Rolling Stone . "It was not like starting over again, but as close to the band that's been together for 40-plus years as we can possibly make it. I didn't want to miss that."

The follow-up to 2014's "Rock Or Bust" , "Power Up" was recorded over a six-week period in August and September 2018 at Warehouse Studios in Vancouver with producer Brendan O'Brien , who also worked 2008's "Black Ice" and "Rock Or Bust" .

Croke Park bosses say Bruce Springsteen backlog was 'unacceptable' as concert promoter apologises to fans

B ruce Springsteen’s concert promoter Peter Aiken has said he is “disappointed” for music fans who were stuck outside Croke Park when The Boss went on stage – as Croke Park bosses say the situation was “unacceptable”.

Mr Aiken, of Aiken Promotions, has apologised to music fans after they were left fuming on social media about the backlog trying to get into the venue on Sunday night. A significant portion of the 80,000 Springsteen fans were left on the street outside the GAA stadium on Sunday in queues waiting to get in to the sold-out gig.

Mr Aiken apologised for what happened and said he was “disappointed” personally that people had that experience. He told the Irish Mirror: “I’m very disappointed. I’m the promoter. I am responsible. That’s it. “People are disappointed. When he went on, there were still 10,000 people to come in,” he said.

The problem arose after stewards had to check every ticket coming into the venue, which added to the long queues that formed along Clonliffe Road leading towards the stadium. There were also delays when it came to scanning of the electronic tickets, with bright sunshine shining on phone screens significantly slowing down the process.

On a normal day, a ticket can be scanned in a couple of seconds but because of the glare, the process was taking in excess of 15 seconds, which added to the delays, Mr Aiken said.

He said: “I know everybody got in but they missed one or two songs. It is just, you know, you want it to be brilliant. You want it to work. It’s just unfortunate.”

Mr Aiken said he plans to sit down and have a look at other ways to improve crowd controls at the gates. "When you sit down, you always want to look at what went wrong as opposed to what went right. There were a few issues that could’ve been handled better,” he said.

Croke Park officials also told the Irish Mirror it was “unacceptable” what happened and apologised to fans.

A spokesman said: “We agree that the queuing and entry into the stadium was unacceptable. We would like to apologise to fans who were frustrated with long queues and to thank them for their good behaviour. We will review the event management plan with the statutory services and in turn with the promoters to see what lessons can be learned.”
