The Vizag International Cruise Terminal (VICT), on 28 April 2024, Sunday, welcomed the largest and only private residential luxury cruise ship, ‘The World’, to its docks, marking a significant step towards making Visakhapatnam a leading destination for international cruise ships, as stated by an official.

Constructed with a Rs 96 crore investment, VICT showcased its prowess and grandeur as it ceremoniously welcomed the ship and its residents, emphasizing its dedication to offering top-tier services and amenities to enrich tourist growth and experience in this region.

“We are thrilled to have ‘The World’ and its passengers in our city,” expressed M Angamuthu, Chairman of the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA), which owns and operates the VICT, in a press release.

Angamuthu highlighted that the Visakhapatnam cruise ship port of call showcases the city’s potential as a prime tourist destination and the terminal’s capacity to host world-class cruise ships.

The arrival of ‘The World’, which is renowned for its luxury and superior service, is a step towards fostering tourism and cultural exchanges, as eighty international tourists aboard the ship, stepped off the cruise liner to explore the heritage and beauty of Vizag. The visitors had the opportunity to explore a range of attractions in the port city, including its beaches, historical monuments, and bustling markets.

In addition, the ship’s first officer expressed satisfaction with the completion of the immigration process within 45 minutes of the ship’s docking, while the port management expressed gratitude to the district administration for their assistance.

This momentous event marks the first docking of a luxury cruise ship at the newly inaugurated Visakhapatnam International Cruise Terminal . ‘The World’, built in 2002 and often referred to as a floating township, came to the city after visiting Chennai.

V izag International Cruise Terminal on Sunday welcomed the maiden voyage of luxury cruise ship ‘The World’ to its docks as it strives to emerge as a premier destination for international cruise liners, said an official.

The state-of-the-art facility, built at an investment of Rs 96 crore accorded a ceremonial welcome to the vessel and underlined that it is committed to providing top notch services and amenities to enhance tourist experience, contributing to the growth of tourism in this part of the country.

“We are delighted to welcome ‘The World’ and its passengers to our city,” said M Angamuthu, chairperson of Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) in a press release. VPA owns and operates VICT. According to Angamuthu, the cruise liner’s port of call at Visakhapatnam highlights the city’s potential as a top tourist destination and also demonstrates the terminal’s capability to host world-class cruise ships.

Renowned for luxury and exquisite service, the arrival of ‘The World’ is expected to bolster tourism and local economy by providing opportunities to businesses, and also cultural exchanges. Visitors will get a chance to experience a variety of attractions in the port city such as its beaches, historical landmarks and vibrant markets.

Further, the first officer of the vessel expressed happiness over the completion of immigration process within 45 minutes of the ship’s berthing while the port management thanked the district administration for their support.

Cruise to operate between Vizag, Puducherry and Chennai ports

Cruise ships are planned to depart from Visakhapatnam in the near future. The cruise liner ‘Empress’ will travel from Visakhapatnam to Puducherry, stopping in Chennai along the way, before returning to Visakhapatnam. The rates would be determined by the passengers’ preferred class of travel.

According to Visakhapatnam Port Chairman K. Rama Mohana Rao, authorities from the Visakhapatnam Port approached the JM Baxi group about operating the service, and representatives from the company accepted.

This cruise liner can carry between 1,500 and 1,800 travellers. The first service will come to Visakhapatnam on June 8 and the travellers will go for sightseeing in the city till the evening. The ship will leave Visakhapatnam for Puducherry at 8 p.m. on the same day and reach its destination on the morning of June 10. Travellers can go for sightseeing till the evening in Puducherry. The ship will sail from Puducherry at 7 p.m. and reach Chennai the next morning.

Though ‘Empress’ is a foreign cruise liner, the authorities have obtained permission to operate it only in Indian waters for some time. Hence, travellers are not required to carry a passport. The ship has a host of attractions like food courts, restaurants, a swimming pool and fitness centre. Casino, spa and liquor would be available on board but they would be charged extra.

AP Tourism: Cruise Ship Services From Vizag

Visakhapatnam is going to show its growth on par with that of Mumbai and Chennai in terms of Tourism.

Already Cordelia Cruise ships are operating from Mumbai and Chennai to the destinations of Goa, Cochin, Lakshadweep and Sri Lanka. 

Now Empress Cruises are starting their operations from Vizag beach on the dates of June 8, 15 and 22. The cruise ship has a capacity to serve 1500- 1800 guests at a time.

As a trailblazing attempt, the cruise is going to be passport free domestic destinations for the time being. The destinations are going to be to Puducherry and Chennai.

K Rama Mohan Rao, the Chairman of Visakha Port released this information.

It is needless to say that this cruise ship would propel the Tourism income to the state of AP.
