Walled-In Wonders

A stoned wall entrance to the Intramuros from the Spanish conquest in Manila, Philippines

The walled city of Intramuros will take you back in time to the Spanish conquest of Manila in the late 16th century. See the Fort Santiago Citadel itself and the treasures within, like the Spanish Colonial San Agustin Church and Bahay Tsinoy Museum, which is dedicated to the Philippines' Chinese immigrant community.

Garden and modern skyscraper in the city center of Manila, Philippines

Modern Manila

Manila isn't just about the past. The vibrant Makati district is pulsating and futuristic. Its tree-lined boulevards are home to modern architectural landmarks like the Ayala Museum and contemporary shopping malls, like Glorietta and the Greenbelt, which are marvels of architecture (and air conditioning) in their own right.

Traditional food in the Philippines with noodles, vegetables, and lime served on the side

Local Cuisine

Whether you opt for outdoor stalls around Intramuros or upscale Makati restaurants such as Sentro 1771 in Makati, make traditional Filipino cuisine your priority. Manila cruises offer you the opportunity to try pancit bihon guisado , fried noodles with soy sauce, citrus and veggies. Tuck into sisig , a crispy pork casserole spiced with chilies and flavored with calamansi, a local citrus fruit.

A bunch of colorful handmade purse made out of Manila hemp sold on the streets in the Philippines

If there's one thing Manila's got plenty of, it's shopping. From the shopping malls, to souvenir stalls both inside and outside the walls of Intramuros, you'll be spoiled for choice. Buy "Jeepney" keychains that depict the rural Filipino vehicle for a high kitsch factor, or choose colorful Banig crafts made from traditional Manila hemp grasses for a more rural, traditional souvenir.

A Filipino city of incredible contrasts, variety and rich history, some of the earliest parts of Manila were getting going in the 16th century long before it would become one of the world’s most densely packed cities. One example of the early days: the neighborhood of Intramuros actually started as the neighborhood fortress… and you can still visit their local landmarks today, like San Augstin Church, Casa Manila and yes, even the old kid on the block, Fort Santiago itself. In Manila, the influences come from all over, with Malay, Chinese, American, Spanish and Arab cultures helping to create an international mix you can experience right on the street… or perhaps best through the arts? If you agree, check out the Rizal Park, home to multiple museums, or Cultural Center of the Philippines for live performances, screenings and more. And we haven’t even mentioned the tropical countryside, or nearby Corregidor Island with its kayaking, birdwatching and extensive World War II memorial history.

Manila, Philippines Port Guide

Manila has a storied past of incredible resilience, and you’ll discover the heart and history of the Philippines during a stop here on a cruise to Southeast Asia . After being nearly destroyed during World War II, Manila has since regained its footing as a city known for its urban cool, dozens of museums, historic sites, and fine dining in many global styles of cuisine. Manila was once called “the pearl of the Orient,” and today the city is slowly revitalizing itself as more visitors flock here each year.

On your Manila cruise, tour Fort Santiago, a historic guard tower that once carefully guarded the city. Art lovers will find plenty of ambitious contemporary art in the city’s sculpture gardens and plentiful museums, like the Metropolitan Museum of Manila or the Pinto Art Museum. When you’re ready for a rest, enjoy a leisurely walk along Rizal Park. There’s plenty to do here during your stop, particularly if cool artisan goods and quality shopping appeal to you.

Please Note: While we don't currently sail to Manila, you can still discover the beauty of the region on one of our Southeast Asia cruises . Browse our luxury cruises to Southeast Asia below.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to manila, fort santiago.

Fort Santiago looms over the Pasig River, watchfully guarding Manila as part of the walled city called the “Intramuros”. Built in the 16th century to mark Spanish occupation of the area, today Fort Santiago is a lasting monument to Old Manila. You can take a walking tour through the fort, admire the life-size sculptures, and enjoy river views from the fort’s bastions.

Take a stroll in Rizal Park, also called Luneta Park or Luneta, which is considered Manila’s Central Park. Admire monuments erected to honor Filipino heroes from the Spanish colonial era to the modern day, or stop in the visitor’s center to discover events and attractions nearby.

Metropolitan Museum of Manila

A guided tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila is a must-see for art lovers, where you’ll find impressive pieces by local artists. Watch the waters ebb in Manila Bay from the museum’s waterfront location after marveling at centuries of Filipino art.

Top things to do in manila, tour san augustin church.

As one of Manila’s most enduring monuments, San Augustin Church is a must-see during your Manila cruise. After the devastation of World War II, most of Manila was in shambles, though San Augustin Church remained intact. This relic of 16th-century Spanish colonialism in the city serves as a reminder of the Old Manila that once was.

Visit the National Museum of the Filipino People

You may hear it referred to as the Museum of Anthropology as well, but the core element here is that this museum is a must-see for those who want a full understanding of Filipino history, culture, and artifacts.

Hang out along Manila Bay

After you disembark in the South Harbor, you can explore Manila Bay on foot. Stop in the oldest hotel in the city, the Manila Hotel, to grab a drink and enjoy bayside views.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Manila Cruise Port

Buffet-style meals are popular in Manila, where fusions of Malaysian, Spanish, and Chinese cuisine offer an elevated take on all three cultural influences. Dine at the courtyard of Ilustrado for a plate of paella in a historic, old-world ambiance. If you’re willing to make a reservation ahead of time, call Purple Yam in nearby Malate, which offers a delicious five-course fine dining experience. For quality java, visit Coffee Empire to watch the talented baristas make expert brews.

Culture & History of the Manila Cruise Port

Various groups have settled in Manila for thousands of years, and it wasn’t until the 16th century that Spanish settlement came to the area. Manila’s old nickname was “the Pearl of the Orient,” for its incredible growth, arts, and culture during the 16th to the 18th centuries. However, World War II largely destroyed the city during the 1945 Battle of Manila, which was a month-long conflict between the Japanese and American forces. The city has worked tirelessly to recover and grow in the decades since then. Today, Manila is one of the Philippines’ biggest cities, and careful efforts to grow tourism to the city attract thousands of new visitors each year.

Manila Port Facilities & Location

You’ll disembark in the South Harbor, which is primarily a commercial port. The cruise industry is growing in the Philippines, and a new Manila cruise port dedicated to passenger travel is planned to encourage more tourism in the future.

Transportation in Manila

The cargo port where you’ll disembark is within walking distance to some attractions in town. If you want to travel by car, it’s best to take a taxi rather than rent a car yourself. A light-rail train system, known as the LRT, operates throughout the city. When you book a shore excursion, your transportation will come included.

Shopping Near the Manila Cruise Port

On a cruise to Manila, head into town for higher-end shopping. There are some souvenir sellers at the port, but it’s best to take a quick peek and then continue on with your exploration via taxi or on foot. Head into the expansive Mall of Asia to explore its hundreds of shops or just cool down in the A.C.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The Philippine peso (P) is the official currency of Manila and the rest of the Philippines. ATMs are available throughout the city, and credit cards are accepted at major establishments like hotels, fine dining restaurants, and museums. While visiting on a Manila cruise, tipping isn’t generally a requirement, but tipping your taxi driver and tour guide 10% is considered polite.

True cost of world’s longest cruise that lasts for nine months straight and what it gets you

True cost of world’s longest cruise that lasts for nine months straight and what it gets you

It's not cheap, and then some.

Tom Earnshaw

Tom Earnshaw

Cruise ship holidays aren't cheap. But a two week excursion around the Mediterranean might feel like a bargain compared to what we've found.

Enter the cruise ship final boss. We're talking a nine month long cruise ship holiday taking you across the entire planet. And the price of such a holiday is going to leave you wide eyed.

Alright, we know that cruises aren't for everybody. Some love nothing more than lying on the beach or a city break.

But millions head to the open waters every year, so there's clearly a demand for it. And for many, it'll allow them to do the likes of a city break and beach trip through day trip excursions, meaning all boxes are left ticked.

There's also very particular kinds of cruise holidays , including those of the spicy variety where couples share sexual partners .

That's not officially on the cards with this one, though.

Enter Royal Caribbean's Ultimate World Cruise on board the 22-year-old Serenade of the Seas.

Officially the world's longest cruise, it'll take passengers around the world and to more than 60 countries for a grand total of 274 days.

The Serenade of the Seas (Jeffrey Greenberg/Universal Images Group via Getty Images)

Where does it take you?

There's a whole lot of options when it comes to the cruise, with it ranging from spending just nine days on board right up to the entire nine months, which includes travelling to see all eight wonders of the world .

We're talking The Great Pyramid of Giza and Rome's Colosseum all the way over to Machu Picchu in Peru.

But how much is it going to cost you to take the nine month trip?

Well, it's not cheap at all. But it does come with a lot of added extras included such as Wi-Fi , business class plane travel to get to the departure destination, and premium alcoholic drinks packages .

It's a very long time at sea (Ben McCanna/Portland Portland Press Herald via Getty Images)

Laundry is also included which is a necessity when you're there for nine months, with it done for you by staff. Your tips to the staff are also included in the total price.

"Considering all that’s included in your 274-night Ultimate World Cruise fare, you’ll enjoy an incredible value," Royal Caribbean states.

"No matter which stateroom you choose, your fare includes Ultimate World Cruise complimentary amenities like business class airfare, pre-cruise hotel and gala, Deluxe Beverage Package, gratuities, VOOM internet package, wash and fold laundry service, and more."

On board the Serenade of the Seas (Royal Caribbean)

There are four cabin options to pick from on the Ultimate World Cruise.

The cheapest is the Interior Stateroom, which starts at a whopping $59,999 (£47,176). And that's per person, not per cabin. You get a 10% discount ($6,000 discount) if you pay-in-full,

An Ocean View Stateroom that costs from £64,999 (£51,108) per person; a Balcony Stateroom is $82,949 (£65,221) a person; and the Junior Suites start from $117,599 (£92,466) a person.

There are also other premium suites on board but for those, you have to call the cruise line directly for pricing.

The costs don't stop there. Taxes, fees, and port expenses of $4,667 (£3,669) a person will be added on top of the cabin.

The world cruise has gone viral on TikTok , with many giving their two cents over the holiday.

One said: "If money was no object, I absolutely would take this trip."

Another wrote: "This will become a boomer cruise."

And a third posted: "Think about how much money you would save from not buying gas and groceries, as well as other expenses."

A fourth echoed this, saying: "That's not bad considering. Rent, food, gas, etc and you get to travel the world while you do it? If you work remote this might be worth it."

Wreck of America’s most lethal World War II sub found near the Philippines

A multidimensional photogrammetry model created by The Lost 52 Project shows the wreck of the USS Harder off the coast of the Philippines, where it was recently found by the project.

A multidimensional photogrammetry model created by The Lost 52 Project shows the wreck of the USS Harder off the coast of the Philippines, where it was recently found by the project.  (The Lost 52 Project)

An organization on a quest to find and memorialize all 52 U.S. submarines lost during World War II has located the wreck of the USS Harder, a sub credited with sinking the most enemy warships during that conflict.

The Naval History and Heritage Command confirmed the wreck site using data collected and provided by Tim Taylor, the CEO of Tiburon Subsea and The Lost 52 Project, according to a command news release Thursday.

Taylor founded The Lost 52 after discovering his first lost U.S. submarine in 2010.

Taylor told NBC News on Wednesday that the Harder was found in the South China Sea near the coast of the Philippines.

“Resting at a depth of more than 3,000 feet, the vessel sits upright on her keel relatively intact except for the depth-charge damage aft of the conning tower,” the Heritage Command said in the news release.

“Submarines by their very design can be a challenge to identify, but the excellent state of preservation of the site and the quality of the data collected by The Lost 52 allowed for [the Heritage Command] to confirm the identity of the wreck as Harder.”

The Lost 52 project has previously located the wreckage sites of USS Grayback, USS Stickleback, USS R-12, USS S-26, USS S-28 and USS Grunion.

The USS Harder, nicknamed “Hit ‘em HARDER,” was renowned for its “particularly audacious attacks,” Samuel Cox, the retired Navy rear admiral who now directs the Heritage Command, said in the news release.

The sub completed six successful patrols in just over a year before it was last seen off the coast of Luzon, Philippines.

On its fifth patrol, regarded as its most successful, Harder sank three Japanese destroyers and heavily damaged two others, all over the span of only four days.

The sub’s frequent attacks “resulted in Adm. Ozawa’s Mobile Fleet departing Tawi-Tawi [Philippines] a day ahead of schedule,” the Heritage Command news release states. “The premature departure upset the Japanese battle plans and forced Ozawa to delay his carrier force in the Philippine Sea, contributing to the defeat suffered by the Japanese in the ensuing battle.”

In mid-August 1944, Harder and two other U.S. subs jousted with Japanese vessels over several days.

Japanese records state that on Aug. 24, 1944, Harder fired three torpedoes at escort ship CD-22, which it evaded, the Heritage Command said.

The escort ship then dropped a series of depth charges in Dasol Bay, Luzon. The fifth depth charge attack is believed to have sunk Harder, the Heritage Command said.

The Navy declared Harder, along with its crew of 79, to be presumed lost in January 1945.

The sub was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its first five patrols.

Harder’s commander, Samuel D. Dealey, received the Navy Cross four times while commanding and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

Norwegian Cruise Investor Day: More Ships, More Premium – And Cost Cuts

Sean O'Neill , Skift

May 22nd, 2024 at 2:55 PM EDT

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings is setting its sights on the premium market, enticing well-heeled travelers with the promise of more balcony cabins and a "ship-within-a-ship" concept that caters to multigenerational cruisers.

Sean O'Neill

Norwegian Cruise Lines Holdings unveiled adjustments to the company’s strategy as part of its investor day for analysts.

The company, whose brands span Norwegian Cruise Line , Oceania Cruises , and Regent Seven Seas Cruises , had a culture established by its founder, Frank Del Rio, who retired last year. Executives said the company now needs a culture more focused on efficiency. “We believe our team can collectively deliver better, and we will,” said CEO Harry Sommer .

Here are key takeaways:

“A Ship Within a Ship”

  • Adding capacity : Norwegian ordered eight new cruise ships, which will add almost 25,000 more berths after they all come online by 2036.
  • Balcony Bump: The core customer base includes travelers in the middle- and upper-income tiers. Thus, many of its new ship designs are tilting premium. They’ll include a higher mix of balcony cabins, which bring in twice the revenue of interior cabins and are more profitable.
  • Changing the cabin mix : When families have multi-generational trips, not everyone can afford the same level of service. In response, Norwegian aims for what’s metaphorically a ship-within-a-ship concept.
  • Something for everyone : “Maybe the rich grandparents want to be in pure luxury, where they have all the amenities, concierge, butler, private dining, but still have the amenities of a big ship, with lots of entertainment, other dining venues, lots of activities to do at night,” said David Herrera, president of Norwegian, in a CNBC interview .

cruise ship cost philippines

Streamlining operations

  • Cutting costs : Norwegian wants to cut $300 million in recurring costs over the next three years. It has created a team looking for surgical cuts. Two-thirds of the planned savings will likely come from ship operating costs, followed by marketing and other functions. “It 100% starts with changing the culture,” said Mark Kempa, chief financial officer.
  • Port power play : One way to save money is to use port facilities more efficiently. Today 65% of the group’s itineraries involve the same top-10 ports for departure. By 2026, the goal is to have 80% of routes depart from those ports. Florida ports are broadly cheaper than sailing out of Europe and Alaska, and the company plans more itineraries from the Sunshine State to the Caribbean.
  • AI to attract guests : Norwegian said it’s investing in AI to streamline operations, from revenue management to customer service. Execs said the company did a better job of monitoring data quality and increased its marketable database by 77% between 2019 and last year. They added that tests of quasi-personalized campaigns were promising.
  • AI to make more efficient route maps . The company uses AI-driven predictive models to optimize itinerary planning by integrating revenue and cost data. These models can also help trim the company’s carbon footprint.
  • AI to enhance pricing . Norwegian taps revenue management systems to predict guest purchasing behavior and discover how to maximize revenue from cabin upgrades and other onboard sales.

New financial targets

  • Margin call : Norwegian aims to increase its adjusted EBITDA margin by 800 basis points to 39% by 2026, a record percentage of revenue.
  • Stemming the tide of debt : The company intends to slash its leverage to the mid-4-times-earnings range by 2026. Its net leverage ratio, calculated as net debt divided by adjusted EBITDA, stood at 7.3-times-earnings at the end of 2023. Last year, Norwegian returned to a profit for the first time since 2019 .

I'm a butler on a luxury cruise where tickets cost up to $150K. I've traveled to Antarctica and enjoyed perks like submarine rides — here's what my job is like.

  • Nenad Popovic is a butler on a six-star, 200-passenger luxury cruise called the Scenic Eclipse.
  •  The ship travels to far-flung places like the Arctic and Antarctica and has its own submarine.
  • Popovic works for four months at a time on board the ship and then takes a two-month holiday.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Nenad Popovic, the cruise butler for the Scenic Eclipse. It has been edited for length and clarity.

I was working as a waiter in a café in my hometown in Serbia when I bumped into one of my school friends who was a stewardess on an ocean liner.

After listening to her adventures, I was hooked. I began to consider life on the water. Since then, I've traveled to the Arctic and Antarctica, among other destinations, as a cruise butler.

I started as a steward on fairy-tale river cruises across Europe

In September 2014, I applied to Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours to be a restaurant steward on its river cruises. I was accepted in October.

Before I could join the boat the following March, I had to pass the maritime industry's SCTW training course — a five-day intensive in first aid, firefighting, and safety training. The company covered my course fees, and once I'd passed, I was ready to join the ship.

In March 2015, I started stewarding the river cruises for Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours. Each morning at work, I could wake up in a different city or country.

On the river boats, we could travel all the way from Amsterdam to Budapest for over two weeks. The river-cruise routes passed villages and castles in rural Europe that looked straight out of a fairy tale.

Moving from steward to butler gave me more opportunities

After two years as a steward, I was promoted to cruise butler. As a steward, I was trained in silver service. But working as a butler, I had to stay one step ahead of the guests' needs and go above and beyond to create a wonderful experience.

To become a cruise butler, you need experience working for a luxury hotel or boat. I was trained by other butlers on the river cruises and soaked up everything they taught me.

Related stories

In May 2021, I swapped the rivers of Europe for the open ocean and became a cruise butler on the Scenic Eclipse.

Now I work on a six-star luxury Discovery yacht

The Scenic Eclipse is a six-star Discovery yacht that sails to the Arctic and Antarctica, among other destinations. A single ticket can cost as much as $150,000 for a 30-day Arctic voyage but prices start at around $30,000 per person.

The river boats I'd worked on were luxurious, but I was blown away stepping on board the Scenic Eclipse.

There are five restaurants on board including a French fine-dining restaurant with a Champagne bar. There are also two helicopter pads, a private submarine, and a helicopter for guests.

Every guest has a butler. There are eight butlers and a head butler on board. I oversee up to 10 suites and look after 20 people per cruise.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Scenic Eclipse (@scenic.eclipse)

I spend four months on board, then I have a two-month holiday.

Every guest has a butler assigned to them with 24/7 service

On the Scenic Eclipse, the butler service is 24/7. We work in shifts, so when I finish at 9 p.m., another butler will start the night shift. I work between eight to 10 hours with a break at midday.

My alarm rings around 5:30 a.m. After a coffee in the crew mess, I deliver room-service breakfast to the suites who've ordered it.

While my guests leave the ship for excursions, I refill their mini bar and collect their laundry. I organize restaurant bookings for them on board or arrange helicopter or submarine trips. I also ensure their suite is flawless and make sure fresh fruit or a specific cocktail is waiting for them.

In the evening, I offer a turndown service. I turn the lights down, make sure their itinerary for the following day is on the TV screen and leave treats.

For anniversaries or birthdays, I'll leave flowers. I love overhearing guests' reactions when they discover their gifts.

During my afternoon break, I'll leave the ship with crew friends to enjoy the local food or visit a heritage area. If we're docked overnight, I will go out for dinner or a walk in the evening. At sea, I hang out with colleagues in the crew mess.

Over the past 2 years, I've traveled from the Mediterranean island of Madeira to the wilds of Antarctica

My best day on the ship was my first trip to Antarctica. While cruising between the icebergs, two whales breached the side of the boat. It was magical.

I've flown in the Scenic Eclipse's helicopter over Antarctica, which was unforgettable. Looking over the raw landscape was amazing.

I was also invited to join one of the dives in the Arctic in the ship's submarine. As we submerged beneath the waves, the lights on the submarine's side shone across a shoal of tiny transparent fish, creating a rainbow-like effect. It was surreal.

The cruise is all-inclusive, so I don't expect any tips, but we do get them. However, my real reward is feedback from guests who say I've helped create a memory of a lifetime — that's my favorite part of the job.

Virgin Voyages cruise deal offers a month on board with Caribbean season pass

cruise ship cost philippines

Travelers can make a cruise ship in the Caribbean their floating vacation home this summer.

Virgin Voyages is launching a Summer Season Pass on its Valiant Lady ship, allowing guests to sail six back-to-back cruises over the course of a month at a discounted price. The adults-only cruise line added the Caribbean option after seeing high demand for its season passes in the Mediterranean on Resilient Lady and Scarlet Lady earlier this year. The offers are aimed at remote workers who want a change of scenery – though you don’t have to be working to take advantage.

“We heard from travelers in North America who wanted the option to sail the stunning Caribbean and stay a bit closer to home while working in a similar time zone,” a Virgin Voyages spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

What are the terms of the Caribbean Summer Season Pass?

Passengers have the option to take their month at sea in June, July, August or September. Each option includes six back to back cruises over the following dates:

  • June 7-July 5
  • July 5-Aug. 2
  • Sept. 4-Oct. 1

Destinations include Key West, Florida; Bimini in the Bahamas; Costa Maya, Mexico, Grand Turk in Turks and Caicos and more, though stops vary by itinerary.

Cruise booking tips: There's more to it than picking your travel dates

How much does the Caribbean Summer Season Pass cost?

The pass starts at $12,000 for up to two guests, a 25% discount compared to purchasing the cruises separately. Passholders will be booked in Central Sea Terrace cabins and get wash and fold laundry service, two specialty coffees per day, premium Wi-Fi and other perks.

Why You Should Consider Living On A Residential Cruise Ship

T ravel is another way to add excitement and flair to your life. For some people, they fit traveling in when and if they can. However, for others, traveling is a lifestyle that goes beyond a temporary vacation. In fact, some travelers are dedicating their lives to living on the sea.

Residential cruise ships are becoming more popular. Initially, the luxury sea complex The World was the only option for those looking to live on the ocean full-time. However, in 2024, a new company called Storylines will launch its own vessel with 547 residential units for those who want to call a cruise ship home for extended periods.

“What a typical cruise line might do in one month or three weeks, we will take three to four months to do,” Storylines founder and CEO Alister Punton told CNN.

Living aboard a residential cruise ship has a plethora of perks that avid travelers love. In addition to the all-inclusive lifestyle that comes with cruising, access to a close-knit community, more reasonable pricing, and daily exploration are making some consider residential cruise ship living as a viable option.

Everyday Is An Exploration

Like a traditional cruise, residential cruise ships still dock at ports across the globe. This makes adventure and exploration a regular occurrence for those living on the ships. The World has a variety of expeditions for residents to choose from. From exploring Antarctica to cruising the Kimberley in Australia, there’s a destination for every lifestyle.

Traditionally, travelers would have to book a vacation to experience an out-of-town adventure. Residential cruise ships provide nonstop thrills both on and off the ship. In addition to scheduled stops, Storyline will also offer “residence choice” stops where those abroad can pick where the ship goes next.

Some Cost Less Than Buying A House

The World has been operating residential cruise ships for 20 years. However, the luxury complex comes at a steep ticket. According to Insider, it’s difficult to secure a unit aboard vessels and travelers should expect to pay at least $2 million for the extended cruise. With Storylines setting sail in 2024, travelers will have a cheaper option for residential cruise ship living.

“With a full outright purchase, the resident owners get a perpetuity clause, which means they are able to roll over into a new residence on a future ship without an additional purchase, making this a long-term investment,” Punton said.

The new company will offer units starting at $400,000 for outright purchases. There will also be a limited number of units available for lease according to CNN. Other companies like Villa Vie Residences will offer residential cruise ship units for as low as $100,00 which is cheaper than buying a house in some American cities.

Another Option For Retiring Travelers

Millennials are getting older. Retirement age seems closer with each passing birthday. Whether millennials like to admit it or not, it’s time to start making plans for retirement and residential cruise ship living could be an option for some.

Extended cruise ship living is a viable option for millennial travelers who still want to see the world once they retire. Everything is all in one place and travelers could spend the rest of their lives exploring different destinations and cruising the sea. This eliminates the hassle of planning trips in your senior years and consolidates everything you need into one location out on the ocean.

Florence in California: Carnival launches new Italian-style cruise ship

cruise ship cost philippines

Carnival Cruise Line is bringing a touch of Italy to Southern California.

The line launched Carnival Firenze, inspired by its namesake city, this week. The vessel sailed its maiden voyage from its Long Beach homeport on Thursday.

“We carry more guests than any other cruise line from California, and now this ship is giving us the opportunity to offer more fun to more people sailing from Long Beach,” Christine Duffy, the line’s president, said in a news release . “The recipe combining this ship’s beautiful Italian theming with the familiarity of our friendly team’s hospitality is, in a word, perfecto!”

The ship is the second in the Carnival Fun Italian Style concept after sister ship Carnival Venezia joined the fleet last summer. Both were originally part of Costa Cruises – also owned by parent company Carnival Corp. – before being rehomed.

Where will Carnival Firenze sail?

The roughly 5,000-guest ship will offer Baja Mexico and Mexican Riviera cruises ranging from three to seven days. Stops include destinations like Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Catalina Island.

What can guests expect ?

Built in 2020, Firenze was refurbished this year to add Carnival-specific touches. Those include staple venues like the Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse and JavaBlue Cafe.

But the line leans into the ship’s Italian motif. The ship’s atrium was designed with Florence’s Piazza del Duomo in mind, and the Lido deck takes influence from the Italian Riviera. There’s even a replica of Michelangelo’s David on board that used to be on Carnival Pride (the real sculpture is in Florence’s Accademia Gallery).

The theme extends to the food and drink options, with eateries like Italian specialty restaurant Il Viaggio, Mexican-Italian fusion venue Tomodoro and La Strada Grill serving Italian street food. Frizzante specializes in bubbly drinks, and passengers can sip craft cocktails and Italian coffee at Amari.

Other features include the WaterWorks water park and Serenity Adult-Only Retreat.

How long should I take a cruise?: Here's how short and long cruises compare

How much does Carnival Firenze cost?

Prices vary based on sailing date and other factors, but a five-day Mexican Riviera cruise departing on May 30 now starts at $409 per person based on double occupancy, according to Carnival’s website . The fare includes much of the food on the ship, drinks like regular coffee and iced tea and more.
