The First Margaritaville Cruise Sets Sail in April — and We Got a Sneak Peek of the Ship

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise sets sail from the Port of Palm Beach, Florida, on April 30.

cruise ship palm beach

Prepare to change your attitude by changing latitudes when the first cruise ship from Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville brand sets sail out of the Port of Palm Beach, Florida, on April 30.

While Margaritaville resorts have long been popular among parrotheads and pirates, the Margaritaville at Sea Paradise , described in a press release as a "floating island vacation at sea," is the brand's first venture into open ocean.

A massive flip-flop sculpture welcomes guests aboard, encouraging anyone who has not yet shed their sneakers to go ahead and do so.

The ship features 658 laid-back yet luxe cabins with nautical details and tropical colors inspired by the sea, sand, and sky. Expect lots of parrots, anchors, and beach vibes incorporated into the décor, plus cabin walls lined with maps of islands on and around the equator.

Some cabins have a balcony or a porthole looking out on the ocean, while interior cabins have no windows (but benefit from the lowest rates).

And because it's always five o'clock aboard the Margaritaville at Sea Paradise , drink packages are available from $99 for 10 drinks (margaritas are best sipped at the rooftop Chill Bar, where there's nothin' but a breeze).

Other on-ship highlights include various dining venues, like the upscale JWB Prime Steakhouse, as well as pools, entertainment programming, retail stores, a St. Somewhere Spa, and even a Fins Up! Fitness Center, should you need to sweat out that cheeseburger in paradise.

The Margaritaville at Sea Paradise will debut as the only three-day, two-night cruise sailing round-trip from Palm Beach to Freeport in The Bahamas . Cruisers also have the option to extend their vacation with a four- or six-night stay at one of two beachfront resorts on Grand Bahama Island.

When the cruise wraps up, you'll return to Palm Beach renewed (and maybe a little hungover).

There are still rooms available on the inaugural Margaritaville at Sea Paradise sailing. Learn more and book your room here .

Grand Celebration Review

Review of grand celebration.

MS Grand Celebration cruise ship was constructed in Malmo Sweden (by Saab Kockums AB) for CCL-Carnival Cruise Lines . The vessel was launched under the name "MS Celebration" (aka Carnival Celebration / link to the 2022- newbuild ). Its previous operator was the Spanish company Ibero Cruises (Ibero Cruceros), subsidiary of Carnival Corporation .

History - construction and ownership

In December 2020, the vessel (IMO number 8314134) was re- flagged from Bahamas (MMSI 311000328, registered in Nassau , 2014-2020, shipowner Bahamas Paradise ) to St Kitts and Nevis (MMSI 341102000). Previously it was Portugal-flagged and registered in Madeira (MMSI 255803270, 2008-2014, shipowner Carnival Corporation), Panama-flagged and registered in Panama City (2001-2008, shipowner Carnival Corporation) and Liberia-flagged and registered in Monrovia (1987-2000, shipowner Carnival Cruise Lines).

In mid-November 2020 was unofficially announced that the ship Grand Celebration has been sold for scrap metal (for an undisclosed sale price). The vessel left Freeport Bahamas on November 15, allegedly heading to India's Alang Shipbreaking Yard (world's largest), with estimated arrival on January 3.

Reportedly, a worker at Alang revealed that the ship will be beached (tides permitting) in January's first week. However, on Nov 17, the ship's AIS continued to report "FREEPORT OPL" as next destination. On November 16, Anchor Shipbroking Inc (Greece) released a weekly report with Grand Celebration listed there for demolition. The list also included Marella Dream . On November 22, the ship's AIS reported as next destination PORT LOUIS (Mauritius Island) where it arrived and docked on December 30, at 6 am. On January 2, 2021, the 34-years-old cruise liner arrived and anchored off Alang, and on January 14th was beached for scrapping.

A total of 41 itineraries (planned roundtrips from homeport West Palm Beach, Florida USA ) were cancelled. The "2-Night From West Palm Beach to Nassau Cruise" itinerary was scheduled to be operated by Grand Celebration between March 3 and November 14, 2021.

MS Grand Celebration cruise ship (Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line)

The 1896-passenger cruise ship Grand Celebration was operated by IberoCruceros until November 2014, when it was transferred to Costa Cruises . However, on November 21, 2014 (the day before the vessel's scheduled departure on the Maiden Voyage for Costa) was announced that the ship had been purchased by an unnamed buyer. On December 23 was revealed the new shipowner - Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line Ltd .

The Holiday-class Grand Celebration had two sisterships - MS Holiday/CMV Magellan and Henna (Carnival Jubilee) . Until 2008, the vessel was named "MS Celebration" and part of CCL-arnival Cruise Line 's fleet. In 2008, it was briefly operated by the Spanish company IberoCruceros ( Carnival Corporation -owned brand/now defunct).

Grand Celebration was drydock renovated in 2008 to serve the Spanish source market under Carnival's brand Ibero. The vessel was transferred to IberoCruceros but still remained under the control of Carnival Cruises (with 75% share).

For Bahamas Paradise, Grand Celebration started operations in 2015 (Maiden Voyage on February 3) replacing Bahamas Celebration (IMO 7904891, out of service since October 31, 2014, scrapped in 2015), which ran aground in Freeport Bahamas . Bahamas Celebration was homeported in Freeport since 2010.

In April 2018, Grand Classica (fka Costa neoClassica/now Margaritaville Paradise) joined MS Grand Celebration as the 2nd ship in the fleet of the Florida-based company Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line. Carnival Celebration's sisterships (Holiday-class CCL boats) were MS Jubilee (1986-built/2017- scrapped ) and MS Holiday/CMV Magellan (1985-built/2021-scrapped).

As the only cruise ship company operating roundtrips out of Palm Beach, Bahamas Paradise provides its customers with expedited boarding (30-min embarkation/disembarkation) and valet parking (at the cruise terminal). Cruise passengers are also offered Bahamas "cruise and hotel" packages in Bahamian hotels. These deals offer 2-, 4-, and 6-night Bahamas hotel stays to be combined (booked together) with the Palm Beach roundtrip voyages.

MS Grand Celebration cruise ship (Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line)

MS Grand Celebration was operated under charter (leased) by the Bahamas-based company "Paradise Cruise Line Operator Ltd" (formerly "Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line"), that changed ownership on December 22, 2016. Among the new company's owners are Kevin Sheehan, former CEO and President of NCLH ("Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings"), who resigned NCL in January 2015. In August 2016, he became CEO and President of the Las Vegas-based Scientific Games Corporation (a leading developer of technology products and services for the worldwide gaming and lottery industries). The company's other owner (with 50% stake) is Oneil Khosa (the India-based Blue Ocean Cruises company's CEO and Managing Director). Until 2014, Blue Ocean operated short breaks (1-, 2- and 4-nights itineraries) leaving from Mumbai-Bombay and Mormugao-Goa .

In 2017, Bahamas Paradise had booked ~250,000 passengers, around half of whom were from South Florida. The liner was last drydock refurbished in 2017 (at Freeport's Grand Bahama Shipyard).

Itineraries

MS Grand Celebration itinerary program was based on 2-night / 3-day Bahamas cruises leaving roundtrip from Palm Beach (Riviera Beach) Florida USA . The regularly scheduled Florida to Bahamas cruises were initially to Freeport and later to Nassau . The vessel was the only one at the Riviera Beach port, and also the largest ever homeported there.

In the period October 2015 - September 2016, a total of 482,211 passengers booked Grand Celebration cruises. The peak month was July 2016, with a total of 54,036 passengers. The 2-night cruises to the Bahamas are the most booked (prices start from USD 130 pp).

Since Hurricane Matthew (September-October 2016) damaged Freeport, the cruise ship was diverted to Bimini Islands but resumed calling on Freeport on January 3, 2017.

Annually, Port Palm Beach received ~USD 4 million from the Grand Celebration ship in port fees and cruise parking fees. Port commissioners signed the agreement with the new shipowner (Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line) on December 15, 2016. With LOA length 223 m (733 ft), Grand Celebration was the max-sized vessel that Port Palm Beach can handle.

MS Grand Celebration cruise ship (Ibero Cruises)

Decks and Cabins

Grand Celebration staterooms (751 total) are accessed via plastic (hotel-style) punch cards. Room service is complimentary, soaps and towels are provided in the cabins' ensuite bathrooms. The ship doesn't offer family or connecting cabins but has 18 wheelchair-accessible cabins, 2 of which Suites. Only 12 passenger staterooms have balconies and these are in the Suite categories. Of these suites, 4 are with obstructed by lifeboats views.

The ship has a total of 8 elevators (passenger-accessible lifts) interconnecting all cabin decks (5 out of 12).

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

The ship had a total of 5 restaurants.

Stellar Prime on Deck 8 is the main dining room, where passengers can choose between early (6:15 pm) or late (8:30 pm) dinner seating, and will be paired with other passengers. A violinist rotates between the Stellar Prime and Admiralty Club. Sommeliers are also available at both venues, but the wine list has a limited number of options for wine-by-the-glass. The restaurant is one level, with big round tables and some smaller 2-seat tables, all with white tablecloths.

Plunge Grill is a small, open-air buffet restaurant located close to the swimming pool area (La Piscina) on Lido Deck. It serves hot dogs, burgers, and fries at lunch and transforms into an omelet station for breakfast. The venue serves a late breakfast (10-11 am) and lunch items all afternoon.

Ocean View Buffet is the ship's main buffet restaurant with panoramic window seating and contemporary, furniture. This cafeteria-like restaurant has a centrally-located buffet station and doesn't have additional food stations.

Admiralty Club Restaurant is a steakhouse restaurant with a 5-course menu.

Latitude is an a la carte priced, counter-style cafe bar/patisserie located in the corner of Ocean View Buffet. The cafe serves specialty coffees with complimentary, fresh-made pastries and gelato ice-creams.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

The cruise ship had 7 musical venues, multiple lounges, 5 swimming pools and whirlpools, wellness center, 3 shops, 3 kids' areas. Legends Theater (850-seat show lounge) features a large stage and rotating cocktail chairs with tables for drinks. It spreads across 2 decks and has large porthole windows covered by curtains. The signature production shows change every 8 weeks, but include performances of American hits with many costume changes, plus variety acts that feature acrobats, comedians, magicians. In addition to the live performances, the theater lounge is also used for movies.

Wine tastings kick off in the afternoon, as do steel drum band performances and pool parties. Welcome aboard orientations, ship tours, martini tastings, and casino gaming lessons keep travelers occupied until the sun goes down.

Grand Celebration Wiki

The vessel ("MS Celebration"/ aka "Carnival Celebration") was launched on August 9, 1986, delivered to CCL-Carnival Cruise Lines (shipowner) in February 1987 and started its Inaugural Cruise on March 14, 1987.

MS Celebration cruise ship (Carnival Celebration)

The vessel (hull/yard number 597) was launched/floated out from drydock on August 9, 1986, and delivered to CCL in February 1987. MS Celebration's Maiden Voyage departed on March 14th (1987).

In June 2008 the boat was renamed to "Grand Celebration" and transferred to IberoCruceros ( Carnival Corporation -owned brand). In November 2014 it was transferred to Costa Cruises (as "Costa Celebration") after Carnival terminated the Ibero brand. However, on November 21 (departure scheduled as Maiden Voyage for Costa), Carnival announced the vessel's sale (to an undisclosed buyer). On November 22, Celebration was removed from Costa's website and all bookings canceled - with either full refunds or rebooking on other Costa ships. On December 23 was revealed the new shipowner - Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line/Margaritaville ( new company brand ). The Inaugural Cruise for Bahamas Paradise started on February 3, 2015 (out of homeport Palm Beach FL ).

In September 2017, the Grand Celebration, the ship was chartered by FEMA (USA's "Federal Emergency Management Agency") as a hotel ship for the US National Guard. The humanitarian mission started in St Thomas Island USVI on September 23, 2017. The charter period was through mid-December. The cruise ship re-entered service on December 23, 2017.

In 2017, FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) chartered the cruise ship for 90 days for a total of USD 25,75 million (daily charter rate USD 286,100). During the 90-day period (September through December) the vessel remained docked in Charlotte Amalie (St Thomas USVI) serving as a hotel ship for survivors following the hurricanes Irma and Maria (September 2017). The ship re-entered service for "Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line" in mid-December, continuing its 2-day Palm Beach to Bahamas cruise program. FEMA is a US Government agency (US Department of Homeland Security) created to coordinate the response to all types of disasters in the USA. FEMA overwhelms all other local and state authorities after the governor of a particular state officially request from the US president FEMA's response to the disaster.

Sadly (due to the Coronavirus crisis), in January 2021, the 34-year-old vessel was beached at Alang India and soon scrapped .

Next table shows the ship's last scheduled voyage (in 2021), with prices from USD 130-140 per person (with double occupancy).

cruise ship palm beach

I see Superfoods has online ordering and delivery. Has anyone used it and, if so, was it convenient or were there any challenges?

Are there any advantages to going to store yourself? We won't have a car , so if we got a taxi would they wait for us?

And any recommendations on food / drinks for our hotel room? I was thinking we'd need 2 cases of water for 9 days to avoid paying $3/each at the hotel. Anything else? Thanks!

Amy recently posted favorably about her Superfood delivery experience.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g147247-i144-k14734239-Back_to_Aruba_this_week_Super_Food_delivery-Aruba.html

Obviously if you want fresh fruit, veg and meats going there in person to pick out what you like is best, just like at home. Getting a taxi to and from isn't a problem.

Two cases of water? Just bring your own water bottle and refill from the tap. Arubas water is very good. :)

cruise ship palm beach

Kyle, I've used Super Food delivery services in the past (during COVID time), it was quick and easy! I believe nowadays they even have an app to shop online.

However, if you don't want to use the online ordering, you can get a taxi to take you to Super Food. Maybe ask them to pick you up at a specified time?

One other option would be to go to a smaller supermarket. There's one next to the Wendy's, which is about a 10 min walk: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Xx3GxVDda3uSdN236

Yes, Unicasa next to Wendy's has everything from beer to flip flops to pots and pans..lol. Nowhere near what a complete grocery store will have, but, we hit that place many many times during our stay just for quick pop in items. It's a great store and so convenient.

Thanks, all, for the quick replies!

We had heard about Aruba's good drinking water and do plan on bringing insulated cups. But with Gilligan's closing for renovations we weren't sure how convenient refills would be. We usually pack a beach cooler bag, so always having some cold bottled water available seemed sensible given the expected heat.

We plan to spend 80% of our time at the beach / in the pool and don't plan on too many sit down-type meals, so we're looking for grab-and-go options.

A cab will wait if you through him a few extra bucks I personally like to pick out foodstuffs I want and go to the store myself. I think aruba may has some recent experience with having food delivered maybe she will reply to your inquiry

Safeguarding our streets: We must prioritize lives on Brevard roadways | Opinion

cruise ship palm beach

As the Executive Director of the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization (TPO), I see firsthand the incredible growth of Brevard County. Our community thrives on innovation, exploration, and a spirit of progress. Yet, from the bustling tourist corridors to quiet neighborhood streets, it is our transportation network that remains the heart of our community. It connects us to work, school, loved ones, and all the unique experiences our region offers.

A TPO is created to look at the big picture of transportation planning — helping to assist in the communication and coordination among the different transportation modes (air, sea, space, rail) and municipalities. We adopt long-range plans and short-range programs for future transportation improvements that require state and federal funding, and we prioritize projects that will enhance the quality of life and economic development on the Space Coast.

Infrastructure improvements and traffic management strategies remain a cornerstone of the TPO's mission, however, with our county’s growth comes an important responsibility — ensuring the safety of everyone who uses our roadways. Brevard County is a vibrant community, but the sheer number of lives lost and forever impacted on our roadways casts a shadow on our sunny days. In fact, from 2018-2022, 2,744 people died or were seriously injured on our roadways . That is nearly the same number of passengers who sail on one cruise ship (3,000 people).

The sobering truth: these deaths are not inevitable accidents — they are preventable crashes. That’s why, in 2020, our organization adopted Vision Zero, a data-driven outlook acknowledging that the only acceptable number of traffic fatalities and serious injuries on our roadways is zero. To date, all 16 local municipalities, Brevard County, and the Brevard County School Board have adopted resolutions supporting Vision Zero.

To save lives, we need a fundamental shift in how we think about transportation safety: acknowledging the shared responsibility between our system designers (those who design and operate the roads) and our road users (who are expected to travel our roads safely). With this in mind, we have developed an Action Plan that emphasizes several key areas:

Engineering for Safety: Infrastructure plays a crucial role in promoting safe travel. We are working with local and state agencies to encourage safety improvements at high-crash corridors and intersections. This could include measures like dedicated turn lanes, improved signage, and pedestrian crosswalk enhancements. Additionally, we are exploring the implementation of new technologies like advanced traffic signal systems.

Educating Road Users: Education and awareness campaigns are essential for ensuring that everyone can get around safely. We partner with law enforcement agencies and community organizations to educate about new devices and promote safe road user behaviors.

Encouraging Alternative Transportation: The TPO actively promotes transportation options like public bus systems, ride-sharing services, and dedicated bike lanes. Making it easier and safer for people to walk, bike, or use public transit helps reduce traffic congestion and creates a more sustainable transportation system. We are also working closely with the City of Cocoa and Brightline to help identify the intermodal connections needed for the future Cocoa Passenger Rail Station.

More: Merritt Island motorcyclist killed in late-night crash at U.S. 1-Pineda Causway

Shared Responsibility: Creating a safe transportation system is not just the responsibility of the TPO or government agencies. It requires a collective effort from all members of our community. Here are some ways you can contribute:

  • Slow Down:  Speeding is a major factor in fatal crashes. Obeying the speed limit gives you more time to react and reduces the severity of an impact.
  • Put Down the Distractions:  Distracted driving is anything that takes your hands off the wheel, your eyes off the road, or your mind off the task of driving. Focus on the road, only.
  • Plan Ahead:  Leave enough time to reach your destination without feeling rushed.
  • Designate a Driver:  If you've been drinking, don't get behind the wheel.
  • Buckle Up:  Every single ride, every single person. Seat belts are your best defense in a crash.
  • Be Patient:  Traffic congestion is frustrating, but aggressive driving only makes it worse. Stay calm, cool, and collected behind the wheel.
  • Choose Safety:  Support community initiatives that improve pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, promote traffic calming measures in neighborhoods, and encourage responsible driving habits.

We need to have a real conversation about our priorities as a community. Do we value convenience above safety? Are we willing to accept a certain level of risk on our roads that may potentially end someone’s life?

The answer should be a resounding no.

We must move beyond the notion that traffic fatalities and serious injuries are accepted, normal occurrences — we need to recognize that deaths on our roadways are a public health issue.

Every trip we take, every decision we make behind the wheel, carries a weight.

Think about the 2,744 people we lost in the last five years. These are not just numbers; they represent stories cut short, families shattered, and futures stolen.

Let's move forward with the understanding that every life on our roads is precious. Let’s prioritize safety over convenience. The Space Coast has always been a place that pushes boundaries and reaches for the stars. Let's extend that spirit to safeguarding our most valuable resource — our people. Together, we can make safety the cornerstone of our transportation network and ensure that every journey is a safe one.

Georganna Gillette is the Executive Director, Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization

President Biden’s consistently poor polling is triggering panic among Democratic operatives with a little more than five months to go before his likely election rematch against Donald Trump.

The outlook has grown so dire, Politico reported Tuesday , that one adviser to major party donors has been circulating a running tally of nearly two dozen reasons why the incumbent is in trouble — including his age, frustration over immigration and inflation, and the unpopularity of Vice President Kamala Harris .

“Donors ask me on an hourly basis about what I think,” the adviser told the outlet , adding that it’s “so much easier to show them, so while they read it, I can pour a drink.”

Joe Biden.

“The list of why we ‘could’ win is so small, I don’t even need to keep the list on my phone,” the person went on.

“You don’t want to be that guy who is on the record saying ‘We’re doomed,’ or ‘The campaign’s bad’ or ‘Biden’s making mistakes.’ Nobody wants to be that guy,” one Democratic operative in close touch with the White House told Politico, explaining why the president’s allies are putting on a brave face while privately having a “freakout” about the election’s perceived stakes.

“This isn’t, ‘Oh my God, Mitt Romney might become president,'” the operative added. “It’s ‘Oh my God, the democracy might end.’”

In addition to polls showing Trump, 77, leading Biden, 81, in the battleground states that will likely decide the presidency, the 45th president is also catching up in the money race.

In April, the Trump campaign and Republican National Committee outraised the Biden campaign and the Democrats by $25 million — including a record $50.5 million cash grab from an April 6 event in Palm Beach.

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey.

The money gap triggered an urgent appeal from Democratic Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey when Biden visited Boston for a pair of fundraisers last week.

“To those of you who opened up your wallets, thank you,” Healey told the donors. “We’d like you to open them up a little bit more and to find more patriots — more patriots who believe in this country, who recognize and understand the challenge presented at this time.”

The presumptive Republican nominee has also not been shy about courting traditional Democratic voting blocs, including black and Hispanic voters at a rally in the South Bronx last week .

“New York Democrats need to wake up,” said Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine. “The number of people in New York, including people of color that I come across who are saying positive things about Trump, is alarming.”

“I’m worried it’s going to be a 2022 situation, where everyone wakes up in the last seven weeks and has to scramble.”

“The election is more competitive than it should be, given the wretchedness of who Donald Trump is,” admitted South Bronx Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY). “In a properly functioning democracy, Donald Trump should have no viable path to the presidency. The fact of a competitive race is cause for concern.”

Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine.

The Biden campaign dismissed the former president’s recent events in New York and New Jersey as “photo ops and PR stunts.”

“The work we do every day on the ground and on the airwaves in our battleground states — to talk about how President Biden is fighting for the middle class against the corporate greed that’s keeping prices high, and highlight Donald Trump’s anti-American campaign for revenge and retribution and abortion bans — is the work that will again secure us the White House,” spokesman Kevin Munoz told Politico.

“We have to run a campaign, where honestly, we drive home the message that Donald Trump takes us back to the 19th century. Biden takes us further into the 21st century,” agreed Rep. Dan Kildee (D-Mich.), who declined to say whether he thought the president’s campaign was doing a good enough job making that point.

“There’s still a path to win this, but they don’t look like a campaign that’s embarking on that path right now,” said longtime Democratic strategist Pete Giangreco in dissent.

“If the frame of this race is, ‘What was better, the 3.5 years under Biden or four years under Trump?,’ we lose that every day of the week and twice on Sunday,” he added.

Donald Trump.

“In 2020, there was enough energy to get Donald Trump out and there were other things on the ballot that brought young people out in subsequent elections,” suggested Michigan state Rep. Laurie Pohutsky, a Democrat.

“That’s not the case this time. I worry that because we’ve had four years with a stable White House, particularly young voters don’t feel that sense of urgency and might not remember how disastrous 2017 was right after the Trump administration took over.”

California RNC Committeewoman Harmeet Dhillon backed Pohutsky’s diagnosis, saying no Democrats are expressing enthusiasm to her for the octogenarian commander-in-chief.

“The most diplomatic thing I hear from Democrats,” she told Politico, “is, ‘Oh my God, are these the choices we have for president?'”

12 Best Beaches in Malaysia

By Diana Hubbell

Last updated: May 28th, 2024

Pantai Cenang, one of the best beaches in Malaysia

  • Find a Cruise

For the most part, the best beaches in Malaysia have managed to escape the level of international hype of their counterparts in Thailand, Bali, or even Vietnam. Yet any traveler who pays them a visit is sure to succumb to their charms. With 878 islands and miles upon miles of coastline, Malaysia practically begs travelers to pack their bikinis and board shorts.

If you’re looking for a dreamy, beachy tropical escape, look no further than Langkawi. From its lush, jungle interior to its sandy shores, this island is the stuff of Robinson Crusoe fantasies.

Penang, meanwhile, is just as beloved for its phenomenal cuisine and beautifully preserved colonial and Peranakan architecture as it is for its sandy coastlines. Admire murals by renowned street artists and feast on hawker fare, then make your way to the ocean.

And should you find yourself longing to escape the fast-paced bustle of Kuala Lumpur, the beach is never too far.

Tuba Island, near Langkawi

Tuba Island, one of the best beaches in Malaysia

Surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea, Langkawi is a stunning Asian island blessed with an abundance of beautiful beaches. Curiously though, to get to one of the best beaches in the area, you’ll actually have to leave the island—but only just.

It’s important to remember that the name Langkawi also refers to an archipelago of 99 islands. And while you could easily spend your whole time on the largest island, it’s worth visiting some of its smaller siblings.

While Langkawi itself has boomed into the biggest resort destination in Malaysia, nearby Pulau Tuba—or “Tuba Island”—remains blissfully sleepy. A 15- to 20-minute boat ride from the main island is enough to whisk you to this verdant speck of land.

To this day, the island is home to little more development than a few fishing villages. There’s a lovely beach area to walk along towards the northern end of the island, making this an ideal afternoon getaway.

Morib Beach

Clear water of Morib Beach

Situated a short drive from downtown Kuala Lumpur , Morib Beach is often the weekend escape of choice for city-dwellers. There are a few different ways for travelers to reach this coastal oasis.

Although both buses and trains are available for the journey, by far the fastest and best option is simply to hire a local taxi. Drivers will get you from the shadow of the Petronas Towers to the beach in a little over an hour, depending on traffic.

Once there, the palm-fringed beach feels like another world. History lovers will find much to explore in the area, which has the ruins of a number of old government buildings.

Blue Lagoon, Port Dickson

Blue Lagoon, Port Dickson, one of the best beaches in Malaysia

Tanjung Biru, or the “Blue Lagoon”, near Port Dickson, is another beach conveniently located within reach of the Malaysian capital. Although trains, trams, and buses can all make the journey, for travelers with limited time, a local taxi is the way to go. Within just over an hour, you can find yourself on a sheltered bay.

Tanjung Tuan Forest Reserve is nearby, which means this area is a great spot for birders. Dense jungle foliage borders the bay and extends for miles.

As its name implies, the water here is a particularly brilliant shade of aquamarine. The sandy crescent here is on the smaller side, but the views in all directions are spectacular. The water here is calm enough for swimming, sea kayaking, paddleboarding, and other watersports.

Pantai Saujana, Port Dickson

View of Pantai Saujana, Port Dickson

Not far from the Blue Lagoon lies this broad strip of coastline that’s perfect for families. Unlike some of Malaysia’s less trammeled shores, Pantai Saujana comes equipped with everything. There are showers and well-maintained public restrooms onsite, plus gazebos and ample shade during the tropical heat of the afternoon.

Should you find yourself feeling peckish, look for the small cluster of hawkers near the paved walkway. There’s also space for an impromptu seaside picnic, if you’ve opted to bring your own snacks. By far one of the best ways to spend an afternoon is to purchase one of the colorful kites sold by local vendors and watch it soar up in the sky.

Pantai Cenang

Pantai Cenang, one of the best beaches in Malaysia

It’s easy to see why this is the most popular beach on Langkawi. Over a mile long, Pantai Cenang is an absolute stunner, complete with pearl-white sands, azure waves, and coconut palms. Travelers seeking tranquility may want to look elsewhere, since the strip surrounding the beach is fairly heavily developed.

Still, if you’re looking for a postcard-perfect beach with lots to do, this is it. The water here is warm and calm enough for swimming. Parents in particular should keep a watchful eye out for jellyfish, but the beach is generally safe for a dip. Multiple watersport operators make it a breeze to hop on a jet-ski, paddleboard, or sea kayak here.

Tanjung Rhu Beach

Aerial view of Tanjung Rhu Beach

It doesn’t get much more idyllic than this glittering expanse of sand on Langkawi. The Andaman Sea here is an alluring vivid shade of blue and the sand is almost blindingly white.

Tanjung Rhu Beach rests on the northeastern edge of the island. Its sheltered waters are clear enough to see straight to the bottom and peaceful enough to swim in all day long. Interestingly, the beach is named for the beautiful casuarina trees that can be seen in all directions here.

Although a section of the beach is private, more than a quarter-mile is free and open to the public. Note that there are no public toilets or showers, but what the beach lacks in facilities, it more than makes up for in natural splendor.

Jungle-draped limestone karsts rise majestically from the waters here. When the tide is low, wander along the natural landbridge out to nearby the small island of Pulau Chabang.

Pasir Tengkorak Beach

Pasir Tengkorak Beach, one of the best beaches in Malaysia

Don’t let this beach’s slightly ominous name deter you. Pasir Tengkorak Beach on Langkawi is often referred to as “Sandy Skull Beach,” although no one knows exactly why. Certainly, no grisly remains have been found here in living memory.

But more than a few locals have speculated that prisoners might have once swam to this shore from Ko Tarutao, a nearby Thai prison island. Other macabre stories abound. Pirates once sailed the Strait of Malacca. It’s always possible that a marauding ship full of ill-gotten cargo was wrecked and its crew washed ashore.

Nowadays, however, such things are the stuff of tall tales and distant memories. Pasir Tengkorak Beach, one of the best beaches in Malaysia, is an especially picturesque spot, replete with picnic tables and showers. The sugar-white sands and cerulean waters look plucked from an Instagram photo. The emerald vegetation of Pasir Tengkorak forest borders the beach on all sides.

Black Sand Beach

Quiet beach of Black Sand Beach

True to its name, this beach on Langkawi’s northern coastline is strewn with volcanic sand. In reality, black-sand beaches are more of a dusty charcoal hue than obsidian.

Still, they make for a striking visual contrast to their more common snow-white counterparts. This particular one is marbled with honey-colored sand, making it especially beautiful when the sunlight catches it.

One curious fact about Pantai Pasir Hitam—the beach’s Malay name—is that no one is quite sure how the black sand got there. While it’s far from the only black beach in Southeast Asia —Bali is home to several—it remains the only one on this particular island.

Some geologists have attributed it to minerals from Mount Raya, but the evidence is inconclusive. As a result, the beach has a slight air of mystery about it.

Tanjung Bungah Beach

Tanjung Bungah Beach, one of the best beaches in Malaysia

Situated an easy half-hour drive from downtown George Town , the suburb of Tanjung Bungah makes for a lovely afternoon detour. A golden, sandy beach hugs the edge of the town. The water here isn’t the clearest, but it’s shallow and safe for all to wade in.

In the not too distant past, this area was a quiet fishing village. Today, the vibe is decidedly livelier, thanks to a growing level of development and highrises along the waterfront. While it doesn’t quite boast the jewel-box historical architecture of George Town’s UNESCO-protected city century, it still has plenty of charm.

Aside from the beach itself, one of the best reasons to visit this area is the Tanjung Bungah Market. From early morning until late at night, this covered hawker center serves some of the best food on the island.

Locals in Penang are fiercely proud of their cuisine—and with very good reason. The diverse local specialties encompass foods from the Indian and Chinese diaspora communities, as well as the Peranakans, also known as Baba-Nyonya. Many are on display and in fine form here.

Unique waterfront of Tanjung Bungah Floating Mosque

Tanjung Bungah Floating Mosque

After strolling along the beach and stopping for lunch at the market, pay a visit to the remarkable Tanjung Bungah Floating Mosque. Built in 1985, the alabaster-hued structure rests on steel pillars that extend into the sea. When the tide is high, it appears to bob suspended on the water’s mirror-smooth surface.

Teluk Bahang Beach

Calm waters of Teluk Bahang Beach

Sometimes known as the Bay of Embers, this sandy stretch on the western side of Penang gets lovely light in the late afternoon. The beach is roughly a 30-minute drive from George Town and local taxi drivers are generally happy to make the trip. Unfortunately, swimming is generally not advisable here, as jellyfish somewhat regularly drift by.

Nevertheless, the serene scenery makes this more than worth a visit. After strolling along the fine, soft sand, head over to the Entopia Penang Butterfly Farm. This educational center was founded in 1986 by an enthusiastic entomologist. Today, the center boasts more than 15,000 brilliantly hued butterflies.

The lush botanical garden is also home to fireflies and other kinds of insects. It’s also by far one of the most popular activities on the island to do with kids. Regular hands-on programming and talks with naturalists make this the best kind of learning experience.

Gertak Sanggul Beach

Gertak Sanggul Beach, one of the best beaches in Malaysia

If you’re looking for some of the freshest seafood on Penang, head straight for this palm-fringed shoreline on the southwestern coast. Gertak Sanggul Beach has long been home to a rustic fishing village. Every day before dawn, fishermen sail out into the Indian Ocean and return later that day with their catch.

Much of that haul ends up at the unpretentious eateries clustered near the shore. Gertak Sanggul Tua Pek Kong Seafood is a terrific place to sample all that piscine bounty. As an added bonus, it has a wonderful view of the water from its outdoor dining area. After a long lunch, stroll right back down to the sand.

Monkey Beach

Small boats on Monkey Beach

Although its official name is Teluk Duyung, just about everyone knows this spot in Penang National Park as “Monkey Beach.” True to its nickname, this space is indeed home to roving troops of playful simians.

Note that while the monkeys in question may be cute—and make for great pictures—they’re definitely not friendly enough to pet. Be sure to keep any snacks you might be carrying in tightly sealed packages and avoid feeding the critters.

As long as you keep a respectful distance, these primates are unlikely to bother you or your travel companions. The half-mile beach itself is lovely and worth a little bit of a journey. Monkey Beach is one of Penang’s more remote stretches of coastline.

View while trekking Penang National Park

Penang National Park

Travelers can come here either by land or by sea. For the former, you’ll want to take a local 101 bus from George Town to the entrance of Penang National Park, then trek through the jungle to the beach. By water, the beach is accessible either by local boat services or jet-skis. While it’s a little bit of an adventure, it’s all easily accomplished within an afternoon.

Arguably the best way to keep the journey interesting is to hike to the beach one way, then hop a jet-ski back. Along the way, you’ll see some of the most spectacular nature that the island has to offer.

MSC Grandiosa will begin seven-night Caribbean itineraries in December 2025 for the winter sailing season while MSC Seashore remains, but sailing short three- and four-night Bahamas sailings to Nassau and the cruise line’s private island Ocean Cay.

It’s the largest MSC ship yet to sail from the port. The Meraviglia Plus-class vessel is among the top 20 largest cruise ships worldwide at 181,541 gross tons and a maximum passenger capacity of 6,334. It debuted in 2019 and features a water park, five pools, nine hot tubs, spa, the MSC Yacht Club exclusive area and a Lego partnership in its kids clubs.

One of the more dramatic features is the 323-foot-long Galleria Grandiosa promenade with an LED projection screen over the length of the walkway. The ship features 10 restaurants including the Butcher’s Cut steakhouse, Hola! Tacos & Cantina, Kaito Sushi, Kaito Tepanyaki and L’Atelier Bistrot.

This is its first time taking on North American duties, and its arrival coincides with the debut out of PortMiami of the MSC World America, which will be even larger.

“The Winter 2025-2026 season will mark our largest presence in the U.S. to date, and our expansion at Port Canaveral is a big part of that,” said MSC Cruises USA President Rubén A. Rodríguez in a press release. “We know people sailing from Central Florida want options, and we’re delighted to offer them two of our most modern and glamorous ships with itineraries that will appeal to everyone from first-time to seasoned cruisers.”

MSC first began sailing from the port in 2021, joining mainstays Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian. It has shuffled several ships for short runs for what Rodríguez said was a taste of what MSC has to offer. That has included MSC Divina, MSC Meraviglia and MSC Seashore.

The family-owned cruise line has its roots in Europe, so the line plays up its “unique international flavor” compared with the other lines, while also touting its environmental efforts such as can be found on the private Bahamas island, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. It is undergoing a major expansion effort to support excursions and on-island activities.

MSC Grandiosa will trade off alternating eastern and western Caribbean itineraries. Eastern trips will visit Nassau and Ocean Cay, Bahamas; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands. Western trips will visit Nassau; Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; George Town, Cayman Islands; Montego Bay and Falmouth, Jamaica; and Belize City, Belize.

“We are honored that MSC Cruises chose Port Canaveral for the North American debut of their magnificent MSC Grandiosa,” said Port Canaveral CEO John Murray in the release. “Expanding their homeport fleet at Port Canaveral underscores their confidence in our partnership and shared commitment to success.”

The growing port for a time took on the title of world’s busiest cruise port after the pandemic, and while PortMiami has since retaken that title, Port Canaveral continues to expand its ship offerings.

The last sailing season saw 16 ships that either homeported year-round or sailed seasonally, and it expects that number to grow to 19 for the 2024-2025 sailing season, including the debuts of Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises this fall.

The cruise dining experience often takes advantage of the ship being at sea, with vast windows or al fresco seating overlooking the ocean beyond. A recent trend, though, has seen cruise lines investing in designs meant to transport the diner away from the vessel.
