Best of Spiti Valley

Shimla to Spiti Valley: Travel Guide with Road Conditions {{year}}

The nearest India can make to being a ski resort is via its pine-fringed Gulmarg. Situated at an elevation of 2730 meters above sea level, it well justifies the Meadow of Flowers tag that it has received. The meadow is given a visual highlight by the 1890s Anglican Church of St Mary’s that sits on a lonely hillock which can be accessed off the dead-end road that links the 1965 neo-colonial style Hotel Highlands Park to the historic Gulmarg Golf Club. However, the key reason to visit Gulmarg is just not the same. You must visit Gulmarg to explore the backing stands of the splendid mature pines traversing you to the elevation of bald Mt Afarwat. To make it to mountain, you can either trek on foot or take help from ponies at a meagre amount of INR 300 per hour. However, the easiest way out is using the two-stage gondola cable car that flutters you to 3747m. The impressive clear day views from the top are worth the ride. During this ride, you’ll encompass Nanga Parbat which is the world’s ninth highest mountain peak located across Pakistan. Booking for this online can help save you from the long queues especially in the peak season of May and June. This service can however be cancelled either due to civil unrest or during bad weather and getting a refund from the organizers can get really annoying then. Base station of Gandola is situated about 1 km west of the bus stand.

Gulmarg endeavors you with more than 40 choices of accommodation each of them beautiful in their own very way. In the months of July, an average room fare (for a night) will be around INR 2000 for the old looking stays and INR 5000 for newer stays. Prices of the hotels see a drop of 20% in the winter season and a further dramatic drop when there is civil unrest in Srinagar or during the less popular months like September.

It is a base camp for trekkers going to Ladakh and for many trekking routes to different lakes of Kashmir, such as Krishnasar Lake, Gadsar Lake, Vishansar Lake, and so on. During winter the valley covered with snow offers an opportunity to the tourist to enjoy sledding or skiing or snow fighting. The tourists can also enjoy fishing trout and other species in Vishansar Lake, Krishnasar Lake, Gangabal Lake, and so on. If you like water activities, Sonmarg provides you the opportunity to enjoy white water rafting. To enjoy the true natural beauty of Kashmir, the tourists can explore places like Nilagrad, Kheer Bhawani Temple, Nichnai Pass, Vishansar Lake, Zoji-La Pass, Gadsar Lake, Baltal Valley, and so on from Sonmarg. The place also has an ancient importance. It was the gateway to the Silk Road connecting Kashmir with China. Except for the winter months (November to February), the climate of the place remains very pleasant for tourism. The month of April to October is the pick time to experience the beauty of flowery meadows, snow-covered peaks, frozen glaciers, waterfalls, and pristine lakes. But if you are interested in snow-related adventures like skiing, ice skating, and sledding on frozen glaciers, winter is the best time for you to visit Sonmarg.

Srinagar's Hidden Gems Beyond Dal Lake And Himalayan Peaks

6 hidden gems to discover in srinagar.

Srinagar, a city in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir situated in India's northernmost region, is well-known for its natural beauty that includes among others, Dal Lake and the Himalayan peaks. However, apart from these tourist attractions there are other not so famous places which tourists should visit while in Srinagar. Here are some hidden treasures to discover while in Srinagar:

1. Nishat Bagh:

Nishat Bagh is not secreted so much as it is viewed more compared to Shalimar Bagh. Nevertheless, this terraced Mughal garden located on the eastern bank of Dal Lake brings a still sanctuary where one can behold picturesque views of the lake and Zabarwan Mountain Range. Visitors will enjoy walking through manicured grass lawns and flower beds interspersed with cascading fountains offering them tranquility away from the busy streets.

2. Dachigam National Park:

Dachigam National Park is situated within Zabarwan Range; this park draws attention of naturalists and animal lovers across the world. The protected area boasts of diverse plants species as well as rare animals such as Hangul deer, Himalayan black bear and snow leopards known only by a few lucky people who go for guided trekking or wildlife safaris in order to get deep into unspoiled nature.

3. Jamia Masjid:

Jamia Masjid mosque stands out amongst various mosques found all over Srinagar because of its majestic architectural design and historical importance. This large mosque built in 14th century under Sultan Sikandar shows rich Persian and Central Asian art influences visible through wood carvings on pillars, spires and mihrabs made out of wood . The visitors will see it forever since they have everlastingly fallen into a spiritual mood at this holy place.

4. Pari Mahal:

Pari Mahal is a hidden beauty placed on top of the Zabarwan Hill giving panoramic views of Srinagar city and the surrounding valleys. It was originally built as a royal residence and observatory for Mughal Prince Dara Shikoh, combining different Islamic and Persian architectural styles. The visitors can stroll around its terraced garden paths, walk through the arched passages or sit down in one of its many symmetrical pavilions which exude tales with every step.

5. Shankaracharya Temple:

Shankaracharya Temple is located on Shankaracharya Hill overlooking Dal Lake which is one of the ancient and holiest shrines of India for Hinduism followers. It is believed to have been constructed in 1 A.D., dedicated to Lord Shiva offering the breathtaking view of Srinagar City and its environs. Visitors will be able to take part in spiritual activities at this temple while climbing up stone steps on their way to it, and watch stupendous panoramas.

6. Tulip Garden (Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden):

As much as the Tulip Festival held annually attracts thousands of tourists, Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden remains calm throughout other months. Located near Zabarwan Range's foothills this vast botanical garden offers an array of tulips characterized by various colors that create patterns impossible to resist even by a keen walker. Travelers may wander along twisted paths cutting through rows of blooming flowers thus being absorbed by nature's generosity.

By exploring these secret places in Srinagar, tourists will discover historic sites, cultural heritages as well as cherish natural wonders that help them get connected with timeless beauty far from busy routes.
