We picked a Walks tour because we heard you are paired with local guides. This was our experience with Eriza who is from Siena. Our day long trip was the perfect amount of touring in Siena and San Gimignano free time, one Chianti winery run by a small family with a fabulous fresh cooked lunch. The small group of 8 people was awesome and really allowed for a special experience for our first trip to the Tuscany region. Can't wait to come back and take another tour with Walks!

However, there is much more to discover in Tuscany beyond its famous capital.

Here are some of the most popular cities and towns to visit in Tuscany along with the easiest ways to reach them from Florence:

Siena is one of Tuscany’s most enchanting medieval towns. Famous for its Palio horse race, Gothic architecture, and the iconic shell-shaped main square Piazza del Campo, Siena is a must-see on any Tuscan itinerary.

To get to Siena from Florence, the quickest and easiest option is to take the direct train which takes just 1.5 hours. Trains run regularly throughout the day from Florence’s Santa Maria Novella station. The drive from Florence to Siena takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes via the RA3 and S2 highways.

Enclosed within impressively intact 16th-century Renaissance walls, Lucca is known for its cobbled streets, Romanesque churches, cafes, and atmospheric piazzas. Walking or cycling atop the tree-lined walls offers spectacular views over the terracotta rooftops and surrounding countryside.

Reaching Lucca from Florence is straightforward. There are direct trains every hour taking 1.5 hours. You can also drive which takes around 1 hour 20 minutes via the FI-PI-LI or A11 highways.

Fun Activity in Lucca If you opt for a day trip to Lucca, I suggest you rent a quadricycle and take a ride across the beautiful Park. It’s a fun activity for families with kids but also couples, and it helps you rest your feet while still enjoying those lovely surroundings on the move. We rented ours for €15/hr at 43 Via Veneto Lucca. There are plenty more spots you can rent these from throughout the city, especially along the walls.

For lunch or an early dinner, before heading back to Firenze, consider Ristorante San Colombano Lucca – located right on the famous walls.

San Gimignano

San Gimignano is famous for its historic medieval “towers” that dominate the Tuscan skyline. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it offers visitors the chance to step back in time and stroll cobbled lanes dotted with enchanting artisan boutiques, cafes, and wine-tasting rooms.

To get to San Gimignano, take the direct train from Florence to Poggibonsi, and then a 25-minute bus ride to Piazzale Montemaggio, for a total 1.5-hour journey time from the main city . Alternatively, the drive takes just over 1 hour via the FI-RA highway. Guided day tours are also available which take the hassle out of travel.

Montepulciano

Perched atop a hill and surrounded by vineyards, Montepulciano is the jewel of southern Tuscany. Wander narrow Renaissance streets, sample the famous Vino Nobile wine, and take in panoramic views over the Val d’Orcia countryside.

It takes between 2.5 and 3 hours to reach Montepulciano from Florence by train, changing at Chiusi. By car, it’s around 1 hour 20 minutes via the A1 and E35 highways. Many visitors choose to visit Montepulciano on a guided tour from Florence. This one of those destinations best reached by car.

Stop in Chiusi If you want to take a break in between trains or driving on your way to Montepulciano, consider stopping at Chiusi. You could walk from the charming Piazza to the emerald-green Lake Chiusi, and then enjoy the underground museum after a tasty lunch at Osteria La Solita Zuppa. The crostini Toscani and Pici al ragu d’anatra sound delicious.

While more than just its famous Leaning Tower, Pisa’s Campo dei Miracoli is certainly an unmissable highlight to photograph. The city itself is lively with vibrant street life, markets, and history including its roots as a former maritime power.

Direct trains from Florence to Pisa take only 1 hour making it an easy and one of the most popular Tuscany day trip. By car, the drive takes just under 1 hour 30 minutes using the FI-PI-LI and A12 highways.

Volterra is an ancient hilltop settlement rich in Etruscan history and artifacts. Today, it offers incredible views over the countryside and Tuscan hot springs, alabaster workshops, museums, and medieval ruins to explore. Don’t miss a visit to its impressive Roman amphitheater dating back to the 1st century BCE.

Reaching Volterra independently takes around 2.5 hours by train with a stop in Pontedera, where you will need to change to a bus.

If you opt for the train + bus.. Once you get off the bus you just need to walk 3 minutes to Pontedera Bus Station. Go to Corsia 4 and take the bus 500 towards Volterra. By car, the drive takes just under 1.5 hours via the FI-RA highway.

The train + bus route is fairly straightforward but you must time your bus carefully, as there aren’t many ones departing. In Summer, the bus departing Pontedera at 9:25 is a good option but you’ll need to take the train from Florence at 7:00 am which arrives at Pontedera Station at 7:36 am. 

You can download the  Summer bus schedule here, and the Winter one  here . Make sure you look at the direction (it must end with Volterra for your way there, and going towards Pontedera as you return to Florence).

That route is early enough to enjoy half a day in Volterra and give you plenty of time to have breakfast in Pontedera, buy tickets, and make it on time for the bus. You should be able to purchase the bus tickets from the nearest Tabaccheria, in Corso G. Matteotti. That one is open from 8 am, Monday to Saturday.

Other Larger Cities in Tuscany for a Day Trip From Florence + Way to Travel There

Arezzo is famous for the Piero della Francesca frescoes inside the Basilica of San Francesco and the Cimabue crucifix inside the Church of San Domenico. It’s also known for the important Giostra del Saracino horse race, which divides the city into 4 districts.

To get to Arezzo, direct trains from Florence take around 1 hour 10 minutes. Driving takes just over an hour via the RA highway.

Day Trips by Train

Italy’s rail network is extensive, reliable, and fast. From Florence’s main Santa Maria Novella station there are regular direct connections south to Arezzo, Siena, and Volterra as well as west to Pisa, Livorno, and Lucca. While certain destinations like Montepulciano and Volterra might require a longer journey, with the tips in this guide you should be able to easily plan your travel itinerary. Keep in mind that journey times average 1-3 hours making day returns easy. Book tickets via Trenitalia ahead of time for the best fares and seat reservations where possible.

PS: In lower peak seasons like Spring and Fall, you’ll be able to purchase the tickets at the train station right before your departure. However, you should allow an extra 20 minutes before the departing time to wait in line. That’s what I did when I visited both Lucca and Certaldo last October.

Certaldo, writer Boccaccio’s birthplace, offers wine tastings, museums, and pretty medieval lanes for wandering in the afternoon. It’s just 50 minutes from Florence by train. It reminds me of the fortified city of Mdina in Malta, although smaller and with rolling countryside around.

While we spent as much time traveling to and back from Certaldo as we spent visiting the town, both my husband and I enjoyed getting out of the city and exploring a new place. This was easy and relaxing. The town was quiet, and the cable car ride to the top was very scenic. For half of the time, it felt like we were the only ones in town. The weather was warm but comfortable (it was the second week of October just after 3 pm), the sun was preparing to go down, and the inner parts were nicely shaded.

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting such a gorgeous little Borgo on top. I can see this spot being perfect for people who want to wind down, and maybe work on a creative project , whether it’s just for a day or an entire week. I couldn’t stop taking pictures, and that means the place must be a good one.

If you go around lunchtime and dinner, you’ll find three to four options where to have a snack or a bigger meal. Most of them have a gorgeous view.

Montefioralle is located just 9 km from Greve in Chianti. Reach it by car via the Chiantigiana Road (SS222) in around 15 minutes, or take a 30-minute bus from Greve.

Florence lends itself to planning day trips throughout the region of Tuscany - no corner is too far - offering various options for transport, destinations and types of activities. Historic exploration, quaint towns, wine tasting , trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding, and stunning landscapes make up just a few of the possibilities that you can integrate into your vacation itinerary.

If you want to climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa Book Ahead! Space is limited

Traveling without a car? Pisa is easily reached from Florence’s main train station, Santa Maria Novella. There are regional trains which leave frequently (every 15 - 30 minutes ) check the Trenitalia website for timetables, insert ‘Pisa centrale’ , as your final destination. The train station is located close to the city center, you can either walk (about 1.5 km) into town and the Leaning Tower or to take the public transportation.

If you would like to walk, head in the direction of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and cross the Arno River. If you would like to take the bus, pick up tickets at the kiosks in the train station and then head to the bus stop across from the Jolly Cafe to catch the LAM Rossa bus, which will take you close to the Piazza dei Miracoli in about 10 minutes. You will want to get off at the stop called ‘Torre’ . To return to the train station, you can catch the same bus from directly across the street where you got off. Another easy alternative is to meet a professional guide for a  walking tour and tower visit  in either case remember that booking to see the Leaning Tower is a must.

If you have a car, Pisa couldn't be any easier to find!  Simply follow the free two lane highway SGC Firenze - Pisa - Livorno to Pisa.  You will find the exits well indicated, and road signs for directions towards the "Torre Pendente" (Literally the leaning tower.)  We highly suggest that if you decide to drive to Pisa, that you combine this city with a stop at San Miniato and Livorno .

See it Like a Pro:

Half Day Tour From Florence

Rent a bike and enjoy seeing the town from the city walls

Lucca , can be reached by either train or bus, but I recommend taking the train because it is direct and offers wonderful views of Tuscany . Trains leave about twice an hour from Santa Maria Novella. The Lucca train station is located just two blocks from the city’s 16th century walls, which enclose the center, in Piazza Ricasoli. I suggest taking the short walk and entering through the closest door Porta San Pietro. Another convenient option, is taking a  half day walking tour  with a guide who can show you the secrets of Lucca.

Going to Lucca by car gives you a bit more freedom to explore the amazing countryside in this area of north Tuscany, especially the various historic villas and vineyards.  Depending on the time you have to dedicate to this intin, you can easily opt for the quicker pay toll highway or follow the roads that wind through the small towns and sunflower fields. Touring Arezzo by Foot

Stop & Enjoy the Arezzo Wine Consortium near the Duomo

This city is filled with pleasant surprises. The characteristic streets are filled with cafes, enotecas, restaurants and specialty shops that cater as much to the locals as tourists looking for genuine flavors. The city also boasts a fantastic selection of historic monuments: the Roman amphitheater, archaeological museum, Medici Fortress, art museum and the churches.

Arezzo is just a short 45 minute train ride south of Florence. Take one of the hourly trains for €8.00 from Santa Maria Novella and get off at Arezzo, being sure not to buy a ticket to Arezzo Casello 1 or Arezzo Pescaiola, which are outside the city center.

If you are driving to Arezzo, you will take the pay toll Autostrada del Sole south in the direction Roma. The toll is less than 5 Euro, and the exit is clearly marked. Once you pay the toll you will take the second exit on the roundabout and head towards to the city. Parking is clearly marked and it is all fairly close to the city center.

You can easily stay the entire day at Arezzo and never run out of things to see, do and enjoy.

Side Trip: Cortona

If you were to decide you had enough of Arezzo, then you could head down towards Cortona reached by car or by train from either Florence or Arezzo.  The Camucia-Cortona station is located about 3 km just below the hill top town. Be sure you take the direct train if you are leaving from Florence, lasting about 90 minutes, rather than to Terontola-Cortona, which is further away and requires a change. The town center is a bit of a trek uphill or take the local bus service from the station which leaves every 30 minutes .

One Day in Siena

Combine San Gimignano & Siena

Santa Maria della Scala will delight all ages

This historic arch rival to Florence, is spectacularly diverse and captivating. The monumental architecture, museums, the Duomo, unforgettable landscape and even the culinary specialties are worth dedicating a full day of exploration...better yet: an overnight stay .

Siena does not have a train station but can be reached by bus in a little over an hour, leaving from the SITA bus station on Via della Scala to the left of the main entrance to the Santa Maria train station in Florence . This is a great way to travel because you pass through beautiful countryside and the bus drops you off right in the center of Siena in Piazza S. Domenico so all you have to do is walk 5 minutes to arrive in the main square, Piazza del Campo. They are very frequent though, at least one an hour , allowing for flexibility in your day. Buy your tickets from either the SITA bus station or one of the tabaccaio stores around the area and be sure to stamp your ticket when you get on the bus to validate it.

If your time is limited you can combine  San Gimignano & Siena  in an organized tour, where you can enjoy both the cities and the landscape.

5. San Gimignano

An Important Stop on the Via Francigena - for a spectacular hiking trip

San Gimignano is a must see while in Tuscany and best discovered by taking the bus or by driving because there is no train station close to the city center. You can catch one of the many buses that leave at least once an hour from the Santa Maria Novella bus stop, located just to the side of the train station, from the BusItalia Nord company . Buy tickets at the bus station or from a tabaccaio for around €7.00. Or leave the transport hassles to a guide and make the most of the  San Gimignano & Siena  day trip .

The bus will drop you off in Poggibonsi (50 minutes away), where you will need to change buses to arrive in Piazzale dei Martiri where you can enter the city through the main door Porta San Giovanni. Unfortunately, you will have to change in Poggibonsi because there are no direct buses. This being said, they are well organized and your layover time shouldn’t be much longer than 15 minutes. Simply check the board when you get off the bus and see which bus will take you to San Gimignano - it should be clearly marked and will take another 25 minutes.

Wine Tasting on your Own... without a car !

Chianti, and more precisly Chianti Classico , is one of the most popular areas in Tuscany.  The reasons are many: its vast selection of wines, the fabulous landscapes, small towns and delicious culinary menus. A car is strongly recommended ... however, it is possible to do a limited exploration without a car by taking the bus, read here for more information on the small towns of Chianti and how to get to them with public transport.

This area can also be fully appreciated with someone else behind the wheel leaving you free to savor the wines and snap photos: check out the day trip into  the vineyards  or the convenience of a  Private Tour . But if you are looking for something just a bit different, who can resist an afternoon  on horse back  in the Chianti vineyards?

It could be well worth renting a car just for one day, or hiring a NCC (car with your personal driver) and tour the wonderful back roads, where every curve opens a new vista. Driving in Chianti is fairly simple and easily navigated. I suggest taking the Chiantigiana Road , known as the SR222 and the Chianti wine road because it gives you the most beautiful views, takes you through quaint windy roads , typically of Chianti and takes you directly to many of the wineries.

Mugello is also one of the areas in Tuscany best discovered with a car. Although you can take buses to specific towns such as Borgo San Lorenzo or Scarperia, if you wish to see the lush countryside and leisurely poke around, have maximum flexibility , all the while discovering its delicious food and breathtaking views, it is best to drive .

One of our favorite ways to mix these green hills with the city is to ride down hill from Mugello into the city center, possible for everyone with a private bike tour .

Make sure you have a map or a GPS handy because if you want to venture off the main roads, you will want to be sure that you are well prepared. When I travel, I like to take the SS 302, known as Faentina because it is the most beautiful. Similarly, the SS 65, or the Bolognese , is also stunning. If you are looking for a more direct route, you will want to get onto the A1 highway and exit at Barberino di Mugello .

8. Casentino

Bus (2 hr) or Car (90 min)

Dedicate time to Exploring the castle in Poppi

Go Castle Hopping in Casentino !

This magical land evokes images of knights in armor, damsels in medieval dress , genuine hospitality and genuine Tuscan recipes. It will encourage you to slow down just a bit, immerse yourself in a new landscape , long hikes and a lazy afternoon at the cafe in the shadow of the Poppi Castle.

The road SS67 exits Florence passing by Pontassieve before arriving at the foot of the mountains that divide Casentino from the Renaissance City. The picturesque mountain pass starts with the vineyards of Nippizano and Frescobaldi, before reaching the lofty heights of the Passo della Consuma (1060 meters above sea level) to then descend in the valley that gives birth to the Arno River. If you don’t feel up to driving, you can catch the bus , which will take you all the way to Poppi.

It’s true - Cinque Terre is not located in the region of Tuscany , but it is also true that it is one of the more popular day trips , and Florence is just the right distance to make it worthwhile. Though it is possible to drive to Cinque Terre, it seems such a waste since the small towns are better visited with the use of the local train, boat or simply by hiking the many trails . • This might be an unpopular opinion, but if I were to do it over again,  I’d ditch the hostel!  While I was on my wine tour in Chianti, I heard about a farm stay accommodation. It sounded a lot less crowded, a little more comfortable, and apparently the bathrooms have locks on them (that’s right, in a hostel that’s not always a guarantee!)
• I’d have the same breakfast every day. The cafes in this region are called “coffee bars” and my favourite breakfast was a simple  Brioche with coffee.  Now that I will be robbed of this simple luxury, I wish I ate it more (seriously, they are to die for).
• Smaller towns in Tuscany shut shop in the afternoon (typically between 1:30 PM and 4 PM) for their afternoon siesta. Don’t delay your lunches or wait for a later time to pick yourself a souvenir, because you’ll end up starving or going back home empty handed- both of which I’ve done (on the same day at that!)
• The internet coverage is spotty in many of the smaller villages in Tuscany. If you’re depending on it for route navigation,  download your maps offline,  lest you wish to be stranded in the middle of nowhere. Of course, this didn’t happen to me, but I was upset I had to wait to get back to the hostel to post my Instagram stories!
• If you’re using public transportation, I cannot stress this enough.  Hold onto your personal belongings closely - keep them in your line of sight at all times. Pickpockets frequently target tourists, and if you stick out like a sore thumb (like I did with my dusky complexion and exotic accent), you’re most likely going to be a target.
• Wear comfortable shoes  (that have already been broken into)- do not choose this day trip to break into your new pair of sneakers.

When you think of stereotypical Italy, you likely imagine lusciously green hills lined with Cypress trees, rolling vineyards, and Medieval architecture; the central Italian region of Tuscany combines all these elements and even more. From the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence, with its grandeur and romantic charm, to the Gothic intrigue of Siena, Tuscany never ceases to wow its visitors. Because the region has so much to offer, it can become slightly overwhelming, however, with this 4-day Florence and Tuscany itinerary, you will be able to make the most out of your trip.

How to spend 4 days in Florence and Tuscany

4 days in florence and tuscany – day 1 florence, florence cathedral – duomo.

Though a relatively small city, Florence is full of hidden treasures and bold architecture. The best place to start your trip is by visiting Florence Cathedral; with its strikingly golden dome that dominates the city’s skyline, it is hard to miss. Built between 1296 and 1436, the Cathedral, and in particular the dome, are symbolic of the city’s role in the Italian Renaissance; ensure that you travel inside the Cathedral and discover the beauty of its interior just as much as the exterior.

Tip: There is a dress code to enter the church. Women must wear clothes covering their knees and their elbows. Men must wear long trousers.

Tip: The queues to enter the Duomo and to climb the Cupola are long and you might have to wait for hours to enter. A great way to skip the lines is by taking a guided tour or if you are using the Firenze Card (The Firenze Card works like a three-day fast pass to your favorite attractions. This is a great option for visitors trying to pack as much sightseeing into a Florence vacation as it lets them skip the long queue lines at most of the most popular sites. It is a great buy if you are staying in Firenze for 3 days).

Basilica di Santa Croce

Complete your first day in Florence with a visit to the Basilica di Santa Croce, a spectacular thirteenth-century masterpiece with exceptional architectural features, as well as a resting place for famous Italian, including Michelangelo, Machiavelli, and Galileo Galilei. Begin your second day in Florence with a trip to Galleria dell’Accademia, a world-famous art gallery renowned for housing Michelangelo’s David, a Renaissance masterpiece cut from a single piece of marble. As well to this, there are many other artworks that merit great attention, including those by Botticelli and Lippi; aside from the works themselves, the actual building of the Galleria dell’Accademia is beautiful.

Tip: There are usually long queues for the Accademia. To save time you can either buy a timed entrance ticket beforehand or book a guided tour.

4 days in Florence and Tuscany – Day 3  San Gimignano, Chianti & Siena

Begin your third day in Tuscany by hopping on a bus to San Gimignano , a UNESCO World Heritage Medieval town just a short distance from Florence. Spurting from the town’s skyline are 14 towers that provide it with its own unique charm and authentic Medieval intrigue.

For a relatively small town, there is a lot to see; for instance, the Palazzo Comunale, which is the hub of the local government, and a glorious thirteenth-century building. Also on the list of things to do in San Gimignano is to sample to white wine Vernaccia, which is historically considered one of Italy’s finest; you can also do tours of the vineyards to experience the grape first-hand.

But like most places in Italy, particularly Tuscany, one of the most enjoyable things to do is to simply wander the narrow, cobbled streets and discover some hidden gems, such as the gorgeous plethora of authentic bars and cafes, as well as a lovely selection of Trattorias.

After San Gimignano, jump on a bus to the nearby Chianti countryside ; when you imagine those rolling Tuscan hills dotted with picturesque vineyards, this is the place you are envisaging. Enjoy a beautiful glass of Chianti wine from its authentic origins, while gazing out at the beautiful surrounding scenery.

Afterward, head towards one of the many traditional restaurants for a bite to eat, as well as another gorgeous glass of Chianti. In the countryside, there is also an abundance of Medieval villas and wineries to explore, so ensure you take your time discovering everything the region has to offer.

After relaxing in the countryside, hop on another bus to the mesmerizing city of Siena , located slightly further south. A growing tourist destination and an authentic Medieval wonder, this architecturally spectacular city have so much history and charm. Firstly, visit Siena Cathedral, a Renaissance masterpiece constructed during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.

The cathedral’s exterior is beautifully embellished with Gothic detailing and boasts some extraordinary colors. Secondly, visit the Municipal Building in Piazza del Campo, and discover its remarkable Medieval Charm.

The surrounding slopped Piazza is a hub of social activity and is dotted with great bars and cafes which are perfect for people watching. Much like San Gimignano, Siena is the perfect city to get lost in; allow yourself to wander its Medieval streets and absorb all the concealed treasures of its architecture and heritage.

4 days in Florence and Tuscany – Day 4  Lucca and Pisa

For your third and final day in Tuscany, take a trip to Pisa and the nearby city Lucca. Firstly, hop on a bus and head to Lucca , an artistic location with Renaissance charm, and a step away from the vibrant hustle and bustle of Florence. Begin your visit by strolling along the sixteenth-century walls, that are still near enough in their original condition; at a whopping 2.6 miles, these are the second longest walls in Europe.

Next, explore the city’s historic center, starting with Piazza Anfiteatro, otherwise known as the Amphitheatre Square. Essentially, the Piazza was built up in the Middle Ages where a Roman Amphitheatre previously existed, giving it a truly extensive history. Today, bars and cafes are dotted around it, where you can relax and absorb the Piazza’s heritage.

Next, head to Torre Guinigi, a stunning red-brick tower with a unique quirk; on top can be found a series of Holm oak trees, making it feel like a concrete jungle. Ensure that you take a trip to the top of the tower, both to experience the trees, and also to discover some great views of Lucca.

Next, head towards Duomo di San Martino, a breath-taking eleventh-century Cathedral nestled in the heart of the historic center of Lucca. The Gothic and Romanesque style of the Cathedral, as well as its striking white color, make it truly mesmerizing, and unique. Make sure you also spend lots of time simply roaming the streets and getting lost in the beauty of Lucca.

After you are finished in Lucca, head to Pisa . What most of us associate with Pisa is the leaning tower, which is perhaps its most famous sight. Located in Piazza dei Miracoli is the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which interestingly, is unintentionally leaning. Spend some time exploring the Tower, perhaps even go to the top, and of course, it is necessary to take photos of you supposedly holding it up!

Also, the Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa Cathedral boasts a strikingly white façade and an even more beautiful interior. Inside the Cathedral, you can discover breathtaking artworks and mosaics, as well as Galileo’s famous lamp.

End your visit to Pisa by taking an early evening stroll along the river, and admiring the beautiful surrounding architecture and the sense of life in the city. The river is also a beautiful place to watch the sunset over the city.

Alternatively, you can do this excursion by public transport although it is more time-consuming.

There are many trains leaving from Florence to Pisa, they take 60 minutes and require no change. The ticket costs around 9 euros one way.  From the train station to the leaning tower of Pisa you need to walk for 1,8 km around 25 minutes.

After visiting Pisa (remember to book beforehand the tickets for the leaning tower ), you can hop on a train to Lucca. The journey takes 30 minutes and most of the trains going to Lucca require no change. One way ticket cost around 4 euros.

The challenging part is your return to Florence from Lucca as there is no direct train. You will need to change either once (in Pisa) or twice in various locations depending on the train you choose. The train journey lasts around 2 to 2 hours and 30 minutes depending on the train, and tickets can cost from 8 to 20 euros one way depending again on the train.

The bulk of these day trips from Florence can be completed by train, and the time estimates we’ve used to structure this guide are based on taking the fast train (not regional train–more on that below) to and from your destination.

In a few cases, you’ll need to take a car and/or bus to reach the destination, and we’ve noted those where applicable.

The Differences Between Fast & Regional Trains in Italy

In Italy, including in Florence, you’ll find two types of trains: fast trains, for which ticket prices are flexible, and regional trains, for which they’re set.

When taking a fast train, you’ll want to book in advance, as prices can change as your day trip gets closer. Naturally, these tickets also tend to be more expensive overall than regional tickets.

Regional trains are cheaper, have fares set by the government (therefore you can simply purchase tickets as you leave for the day), stop more along the route, and are slower.

When traveling to Bologna from Florence, for example, you have the choice between taking the fast train (about 40 minutes each way) or the regional train (about 1.5 hours each way) on your day trip.

Therefore, we’ve listed Bologna as a day trip located less than one hour from Florence… but if you don’t book your ticket in advance, you may find that it’s quite expensive to take the fast train at the last minute! We recommend using Omio to search for fast train tickets (it will search tickets and compare prices both for Trenitalia, Italy’s national train company, and Italo, a private company that offers some routes, as well as bus routes).

As the second-largest city in Tuscany, Siena was once the military rival of Florence, and today is known for its incredible beauty (especially its Duomo, which is arguably even prettier than Florence’s) and its biannual Palio di Siena horse race.

Siena can easily be reached from Florence by train, car, or bus.

Ah, Rome: I must admit that I’m a bit biased in that I’m hesitant to recommend Rome as a Florence day trip, simply because I love it so much that I have a hard time seeing how one day could be enough.

However, all trips to Italy require hard choices about where to go and where to skip, and if you are hoping to taste the Eternal City but don’t have longer than a day to spend there, it’s absolutely worth going!

With one day in Rome, you can pay a visit to the Colosseum and Palatine Hill, stroll past the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps, briefly visit Vatican City, admire the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, and visit Campo de’ Fiori.

The rolling hills and endless fields of the Val d’Orcia are often considered the most beautiful place in Tuscany–and with good reason.

Italy’s fashion capital is located less than 2 hours from Florence by train, making it a simple and fun day trip that will give you a taste of an Italian city that feels very different from Florence.

Milan’s major sights, like its famous Duomo (don’t forget to check out the rooftop–it’s absolutely fabulous), the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Castello Sforzesco, and the La Scala Opera House are all within a comfortable walk of each other, making Milan an excellent place to see over the course of a day.

As the birthplace of Saint Francis, one of the patron saints of Italy, Assisi is an enormously popular Florence day trip for Catholic travelers–but even if you’re not a practicing Catholic, the history and beauty of Assisi is sure to draw you in.

Thanks for an interesting read. Just wondering why you excluded Venice from the list as a train takes 2 hours and 5 minutes from Florence?

A few reasons, starting with the fact that if I included all possible day trips from Florence here, this already giant post would be the size of a book, lol.

Another reason is that while I adore Venice, I’m not blind to the fact that it’s a bit controversial with many visitors and that plenty of people leave unsatisfied due to the crowds and hassle of getting in and out of the city (from the train station, it’s still a long walk or crowded waterbus ride to the main sights). I don’t want to recommend something that I think has a high chance of leaving people disappointed with a city as special as Venice, which a day trip that involves 4+ hours on a train is likely to do.

I would never tell someone not to go if that’s what they want or have planned, but it doesn’t make my list of top day trip choices from Florence, either. 🙂

Hi again Riccardo. I'm finding it difficult to find the bus timetable. It says that bus 365A operates only on Saturday? Would you know?

Florence is an amazing city to visit which you’ll hopefully find out! It is central in Tuscany and Italy which makes it perfect for planning day trips. There are a ton of great places to visit nearby and we’ve narrowed it down to 8 day trips from Florence!

8. Florence to Milan

If you are in the mood for some fashion, you might consider a trip to Milan from Florence. By train, from the Santa Maria Novella station, you can land in Milan in less than two hours which makes it perfect.

Y ou have to take a look at the well-known Duomo and Montenapoleone street, where you could enjoy some shopping. Not so far from the Duomo, you might find the Palazzo Sforzesco, a special location surrounded by a magical park. In Milan, you can’t miss the chance to have a proper aperitivo on a terrace. 

7. Florence to Bologna

In 30 minutes or so by train from Florence, you will reach Bologna, one of central Italy’s gems. You can easily visit its tiny center in one day. Start from the astonishing Piazza Grande. Then, you might want to continue by checking out the San Petronio Basilica and the Santo Stefano area, where all the main churches are located. In between visits anyway, don’t forget to sit down and taste the city’s special plate, the delicious tortellini pasta.

6. Florence to Lucca

 From the Florence train station, you might reach the city in one hour or so and start to discover this special place. In Lucca, don’t miss the chance to visit the Guinigi tower and the San Frediano Church.

Of course, your Lucca visit is not complete without exploring the Saint Martin Cathedral and the breathtaking Villa Reale di Marlia. The town can even offer you plenty of tiny restaurants or osterie where you might have the chance to taste some of the best Tuscan products.

5. Florence to Siena

4. Florence to Chianti

You might know already that not so far from Florence, in the countryside, there’s a region called Chianti where the best wine is produced. In Santa Maria Novella train station, you might find several trains, that, in few hours, can transport you to the most romantic Italian city. 1. Florence to Rome

Why don’t add another Italian city to your tour? Rome is only two hours away from Florence by train, which you can catch at the Santa Maria Novella station and that will lead you to the Roma Termini train station, basically in the center.

Once there, y ou should check out the Col osseum , Piazza di Spagna , and the Pantheon among others . All those special places are at a very affordable walking distance and you might even dazzle your trip with a special lunch in a typical Roman Osteria in the city center.
