Disneyland Packages 2024: Guide to Best Way to Enjoy Disneyland Vacation

Disneyland packages

The highest discounts generally come with the seasonal Disneyland packages. On this page I will attempt to explain the Disneyland vacation package benefits and possible drawbacks, plus give you a recommendation for my most trusted Disneyland packages provider… Get Away Today

Now, on to the planning of your Disneyland vacation package…

Keep in mind that at its core, a Disneyland vacation is made up of two main pieces wherever you book: tickets and hotels. Almost all Disneyland packages include park tickets and either stay at a Disney-approved Good Neighbor Hotel or Disney-owned Disneyland Resort Hotel. So long as you correctly  pick your hotel , your vacation experience will overall be the same regardless of where you book. However, your pre-vacation experience can be radically different.

This guide is meant to improve your experience of booking your Disneyland package and to save you money both before and during your vacation. If you book with the right people, Disneyland Vacation Packages can make planning a vacation to Disneyland much simpler for all those involved. With one person managing your entire Disneyland vacation experience, you can focus on the more important things–like what to ride first.

In this planning guide:

Disneyland Packages 2024: When is a Vacation Package the Right Way to Book?

Just like any Disneyland vacation, Disneyland vacation packages vary in price tremendously based on what season you visit choose to visit the resort. The summer months (June-August) and holiday periods (late October-early January and April for Spring break) tend to be the best time to focus your efforts on booking via a Disneyland package. During other times of the year, it is much easier to find discounts on Disneyland tickets , hotels near Disneyland , and airfare individually (click on any of these links for info on booking these aspects individually).

Don't Book Your Package With Disneyland Directly

When attempting to book your package either on the Disneyland website  or over the phone with the Walt Disney Travel Company, their goal is to sell you the package at full value and offer the least amount of discounts possible. Disney reservationists will not offer up specific discounts over the phone unless you ask directly. They will be very kind and provide wonderful service, but charge much more than the other options I detail below. If you attempt to book on their website, the pages do the exact same thing. Even the most seasoned Disneyland travel agents have a difficult time using the Disney website interface.

disneyland vacation packages all inclusive

That being said, the perfect way to book your Disneyland package is through an authorized Disney travel agent. They have all the same access to deals that you or I have, but they also offer specific deals on their own. Read below for our full recommendation of the best Disneyland travel agent.

How to Pick Your Discount Disneyland Packages

There are quite a few Disneyland travel agents out there who promise to be the “perfect fit” for planning your Disneyland vacation, but many do not know the destination well or have poor customer service.

While most of the Disneyland packages can be booked directly on the Disneyland website , they rarely have the best discounts and their website is difficult to navigate.

disneyland vacation packages

They purchase Disneyland tickets and hotel rooms in blocks so that they can repackage them at much lower prices than anything that Disneyland offers. In fact, they were the first outside wholesaler to work with Disneyland, and they have been a top partner ever since. Their discounts are substantial and are truly the best way to book any Disneyland package vacation.

While other Disney travel agents can also book Disneyland packages, few other agencies have the ability to purchase the tickets in such large blocks to give these incredible Disneyland discounts. Most other agents sell directly through Disney and are paid with a small commission. Get Away Today functions in a unique place as they are classified by Disney as a “Select Tour Operator,” a distinction only held by the top eleven companies working with Disney creating vacations. They also take the time to create an enjoyable experience for their customers by offering agents who are knowledgeable and ready to help plan any Disneyland vacation. Get Away Today agents stay in the hotels that they book for you, so that they always understand the property and aren't just selling you something on a piece of glossy marketing material they received.

All Disneyland tickets are now being sent electronically which means guests will take either their phone or printed confirmation straight to the gate. There will be no need to go to a ticket booth to pick-up will call tickets and no way to leave physical tickets at home. Book your tickets at least two days before your arrival to ensure that they are processed in time for the first day of your Disneyland vacation.

Get Away Today also offers layaway plans with an additional fee of $99 that allows guests to make as many payments as you would like on your vacation up to five days before the departure date. The first payment requires a minimum payment of $175 so guests can then decide how many payments they’d like to make. The vacation is held until the final payment is made which makes this a great option for families to be able to plan and save for their vacation.

Adding on Other Southern California Adventures to Your Disneyland Vacation Package

There are so many incredible destinations to explore in the Southern California. When you book with Get Away Today , it is easy to add on visits to other hotspots like Universal Studios Hollywood , San Diego, Legoland , and Hollywood.

Not only does Get Away Today offer the lowest priced Disneyland tickets on the web, they also offer incredible discounts on Universal Studios and other theme parks in the Southern California area. When booking your vacation package, consider adding on a visit to one of the other parts of Southern California at the beginning or end of your trip.

Compare Travel Agent Prices to Disneyland Packages Prices

The easiest way to compare prices is to access the official rate sheet provided by Disney Resort Travel Sales.

Simply visit Disneyland.com or call 714-520-5060 to request your Disneyland free videos and Disneyland rate sheet from the Disney Resort Travel Sales Center. Also, you can take a look at the Disneyland ticket rates on their website here  (these ticket prices are blown out of the water by the exclusive prices for MickeyVisit.com readers ).

Paying For Your Disneyland Package

Disneyland packages that are purchased from Get Away Today can be paid for in full at the time of booking, or you can use their new layaway plan option.

If you choose to use the layaway plan option , you can hold your vacation plans for as little as $175 down. Then you can make payments in any amount up until two weeks before your travel. Read all the details of the layaway plan here>

There is a one time non-refundable $99 fee to use this option.

An option that I am really excited about is their Peace of Mind plan. Generally, for all inclusive packages such as a Disneyland vacation, I recommend purchasing trip insurance. This way you can cancel at the last minute without any penalty to you.

However, there is no longer any need for this insurance because of the incredible service that Get Away Today provides their customers. They offer a Peace of Mind plan that allows guests to make as many changes, cancellations, or reschedules up to 72 hours before their check-in date without any fees.

Here is a comparison of the money saved if you choose to purchase with the Peace of Mind plan. There is a $60 fee to use this planning Peace of Mind Plan.

Disneyland Travel Insurance

As I mentioned in the section above, if you book with Get Away Today and purchase the Peace of Mind plan, the information below is not really necessary for you to read.

If you choose to book your package on your own or with Disney directly, I highly recommend purchasing trip insurance to make sure that you won't lose all of your money if for some reason you have to cancel your trip.

There are a number of different insurance types to consider to cover your Disneyland vacation.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance:  This insurance protects you if you need to cancel your vacation at the last minute or leave the vacation early because of illness or injury. Depending on the policy that you select, your insurance may cover other reasons for canceling that are not medically related.

Emergency Medical Coverage: This insurance will cover any illness or medical injury that occurs during your vacation including getting you home to your doctor. Without this type of insurance, you can end up in difficult situations where your insurance may not cover treatment in a different state.

Delayed Baggage Insurance:  If your bags are sent to a different destination, this type of insurance will cover any purchases of new clothes to wear while you wait for your clothes to arrive. They will also pay a predetermined amount if the bags are lost completely.

Be sure to purchase your insurance right after making your first deposit on the vacation. The longer that you wait, the less coverage there is offered to you.

Our top recommended travel insurance provider is Allianz . They even  cover children under 18 for FREE . They will also cover existing medical conditions if you purchase insurance within 14 days of purchasing your vacation.

Where's the Disneyland dining plan and Free Dining Disneyland?

Currently, the dining plans aren't available anymore from Disney anyways but we'll leave this information here since this is such a common question.

One thing that I get questions on frequently is the Disneyland dining plan. This plan functions differently than the Walt Disney World dining plan. Instead of each coupon being equal to a certain level of food on the menu, the coupon has a numerical value that you can spend on anything in the parks. However, when you use these coupons and don't spend all of the money on them at one time you will lose all of the remaining money on the coupon.

For example, you have a $15 coupon and only want a corn dog for lunch. You will still have about $7 left over. There isn't much that you can purchase with that $7 from the corn dog hut besides another corn dog or something to drink.

You will not see free dining offered as a perk to people purchasing packages in the same way that you often do at Walt Disney World .

You can read more about the food options at the Disneyland Resort on our Disneyland food reviews page .

Other Disneyland Packages to Consider

While Get Away Today is our top recommended Disneyland package provider, I try and give you all of the information so that you can make your own decisions when booking your Disneyland vacation.

Below are the other ways that we have found good deals while booking Disneyland vacation packages.

Disneyland Packages With Airfare

Disneyland Packages with airfare are rarely less expensive than purchasing airfare separately. However, there are occasionally good last minute deals from Expedia on packages that include both hotels and airfare.

Click here to see the package prices from Expedia>

I highly recommend pricing out both a package from Expedia and a vacation package from Get Away Today, plus other cheap airfare that you locate on another site. Most often, Get Away Today's price is actually lower. Remember that they have much kinder policies for cancellation and great exclusive bonuses.

The best place to book a Disneyland vacation package that includes both hotel and airfare is on Expedia. They offer great last minute deals that include the hotel and airfare. However, if you decide to book with this option, you will have to purchase your Disneyland tickets separately.

Be sure to check on the airport before booking your Disneyland vacation package. Many of these packages include flights into LAX Los Angeles airport. As I explain in our Disneyland airport guide , LAX is quite a long drive from Disneyland, however the Orange County SNA John Wayne airport is much closer. Be sure to always enter SNA when booking your flights. Also, be sure to factor in the transportation cost when comparing flights to LAX and Orange County airport.

Costco, AAA, or CAA Discounts

There are no AAA or CAA discounts available on Disneyland Resort packages. These Disneyland packages are all sold at full price. AAA does sell both Disneyland packages and Disneyland tickets, however they do not offer the same exclusive cheap Disneyland tickets we are able to offer.

Costco occasionally has discounts on vacation packages, but you again go into the dark territory of large travel agencies who know nothing about Disneyland. These agents may have read something in a flier once and act like they know everything there is to know about Disneyland. Unlike our friends at Get Away Today , they will not monitor your package for you to make sure that you get the best price on your Disneyland vacation package.

Vacations, in general, are a luxury for those lucky enough to afford them. Disney vacations push that even further, making it out of reach for some as a result of the various and costly expenses involved.

I was able to visit Disneyland with my significant other in late 2022 and learned a few things from my vacation. Miles and points can help reduce trip costs significantly, but there are some costs unique to Disney that we’ll also be covering in this article. If you are unfamiliar with the world of miles and points, read our miles and points beginner guide first.

With that in mind, let’s look into the best ways to save money on a Disneyland trip with points.

Planning your Disneyland Vacation

Before we get into flights, hotels, and Disneyland tickets, an important part of any vacation with Miles and Points is to be as flexible as possible. This especially rings true for Disneyland. Going on a traditionally busy day at the park can hamper your ability to see the attractions you want as you wait in long lines.

A few resources, such as the Is It Packed – Disneyland Calendar, are beneficial in this initial planning phase, long before you book flights or hotels. For example, let’s look at the calendar for April 2023:

disneyland crowd calendar for april 2023

As you can see, planning in the second half of April 2023 will most likely make a big difference to the overall Disney experience due to the assumed lower crowds. Sites like “Is It Packed” are ultimately forecasting predicted crowds using previous data, and they do tend to be pretty accurate, as far as accurately forecasting crowds can go.

With Disneyland being smaller and less complicated than big brother Disney World in Florida, three days inside the parks is more than enough time. I also don’t think the Park Hopper tickets are necessary for Disneyland as Disney California Adventure can easily be done in one day, leaving the other two days focused solely on Disneyland.

To keep flexible when searching for flights and hotels, I recommend having a couple of sets of dates picked out to ensure you can find the best deal.

Using Points for Flights to Disneyland

Canadians are limited in airline options, with only two main carriers available, followed by a recent influx of low-cost options. For the smallest cash outlay, Air Canada Aeroplan will be your best bet, as their partnership with United allows access to John Wayne Airport (SNA) with a connection in a US hub from most Canadian cities.

star alliance routing options to Santa Ana SNA

Los Angeles Airport (LAX) is also a destination option, but it’s significantly farther from Anaheim than SNA and has a complicated system for ground transportation involving a shuttle bus to the Uber area.

Aeroplan points are quite easy to earn in Canada, and I would recommend even picking up a co-branded Aeroplan credit card , such as the American Express Aeroplan card , that can reduce your flight costs through a points redemption in addition to free checked baggage for yourself and other guests in your itinerary.

disneyland trips westjet

The American Express Aeroplan card earns Aeroplan points and offers cardholders a free first checked bag on Air Canada flights.

When my wife and I visited Disneyland for three days in October 2022, we flew into LAX as we took advantage of a Hilton Free Night Certificate at the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills. While that was a great hotel, the convenience factor of flying into SNA would have been nice, even if we had to make a connecting flight in our itinerary.

Learn More: The Best Practices When Booking Award Flights

I compared the points price of flights arriving in LAX vs SNA, the pricing for an SNA arrival was lower in five of six cases. Only Montreal had a higher price when choosing SNA as your destination, and depending on how many more points are required on your selected dates, it might be worth the premium. In fact, when searching for flights to LAX, Air Canada will even suggest SNA when displaying your results.

winnipeg to los angeles lax on aeroplan redemption

Points prices vary depending on which city you’re departing from, but the floor will be 16,000 to 30,000 points plus about $150 in taxes and fees per person round trip.

winnipeg to santa ana sna on aeroplan redemption

If all your Aeroplan points are spoken for, or you’re based in Western Canada, utilizing the WestJet Rewards program may be your best option. WestJet operates direct flights to SNA from Vancouver and Calgary a few days each week, and the deal gets sweeter if you have the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard which offers a companion fare and free checked baggage. This is Josh’s favorite way of getting to Disneyland!

disneyland trips westjet

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard earns WestJet dollars and offers cardholders benefits on WestJet flights including an annual companion fare and a first free checked bag.

Check out our WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard review for more details.

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard grants a companion pass every year, including the first year, so you can take advantage of the discounted fare right after signing up with some planning. The companion ticket still has a base fare of $119, so you’ll want to make sure the savings are worth it. If you’re traveling during peak seasons, it most likely always will be.

Learn more: WestJet Companion Voucher: Everything You Need to Know

Finally, an honorable mention goes out to the Air Canada Worldwide Companion Pass offered on the Premium Aeroplan Co-Branded Cards, but those are better used for overseas flight redemptions. And if you’ve spent $25,000 in a calendar year to earn one, you probably have the points to fly in coach!

Using Points for Hotels Near Disneyland

One of the easier parts when planning your Disneyland vacation is the accommodation. I kid you not, every major hotel brand has a presence within walking distance of the main entry gates.

map of hotels near disneyland park

When figuring out how to make the most of your time at Disney, you may hear the term “rope drop” which is short for being inside the park when it opens. Contrary to what’s listed on the website, the main entrance to Disneyland opens at 7:00 am, and the rides start operating at 8:00 am. If you arrive at the main gates at 8:00 am, you won’t be inside the park until 8:45 am, and the most popular rides will already have long lines.

Picking a hotel in this area and walking to the entrance is a major convenience and cost savings compared to taking an Uber or paying for parking and a rental car. It’s already tough to wake up that early on vacation, doing it without real food is even more challenging. This is where having top-tier elite status with breakfast benefits can pay huge dividends. If you don’t have elite status, a few hotels include breakfast in the room rate, regardless of status.

Best Marriott Hotel with Included Free Breakfast

If you are a Marriott Bonvoy loyalist, there are two Springhill Suites locations near Disneyland. The one labeled “At Anaheim Resort/Convention Center” is my pick as it provides the most consistent value for points. It’s also the shortest walk to the main entrance, even though the other location is named “Maingate.”

At a minimum, cash rates are $350 CAD per night but are often above $400 CAD.

SpringHill Suites Marriott Anaheim Resort Convention Center cash rates

The Bonvoy point redemption price is consistent and matches the cash rates well, for a redemption of about one cent per point.

SpringHill Suites Marriott Anaheim Resort Convention Center august redemption rates

Remember, with Marriott Bonvoy you will receive the fifth night free when booking four nights in a row as a points redemption.

Best Hilton Hotel with Included Free Breakfast

The Hilton Honors loyalty program can be sometimes hard to find value in, and it’s true at properties near Disneyland as well. If you don’t have a stash of Hilton points from staying at their properties or haven’t ventured into US Amex cards yet, I don’t think staying at a Hilton hotel with points makes sense.

Learn More: Getting Started With US Credit Cards with Nova Credit & The Best Strategy for US Hilton Credit Cards

I say this because the only way for a Canadian to acquire Hilton points through credit cards is by transferring at a 1:1 ratio from American Express Membership Rewards. In most examples, Hilton points are worth 0.5 cents to 1 cent per point, far less than what Membership Rewards points can be redeemed for.

Remember, at minimum, you can always redeem Membership Rewards points as a statement credit at 1 cent per point, and can get even more value out of them by transferring to an airline loyalty program partner.

With that foreword, Hilton does have a good option nearby if free breakfast is important to you and you meet the above criteria. The Hampton Inn and Suites Anaheim Convention Center is regularly available for 50,000 points per night and has cash rates of about $300 to $400 CAD per night. The Hilton Garden Inn Anaheim Resort is another strong option in the general area.

Hampton Inn and Suites Anaheim Convention Center pool area

Similar to Marriott, if you book four nights at a Hilton Honors hotel with their standard redemption award, you will receive the fifth night free.

Best Hyatt Hotel with Included Free Breakfast

If you’re not a Hyatt loyalist or well into the game of US credit cards with an individual tax identification number (ITIN) , unfortunately, a World of Hyatt hotel redemption won’t be an option.

Two Hyatt properties nearby offer complimentary breakfast, Hyatt House and Hyatt Place. They are both priced the same, charging:

  • 12,000 World of Hyatt points at off-peak pricing
  • 15,000 World of Hyatt points at standard pricing
  • 18,000 World of Hyatt points at peak pricing

The Hyatt House is a bit closer to Disney, so it gets my vote as the best Hyatt. Considering the points price, it may even get my pick as the best points hotel near Disneyland.

Hyatt House At Anaheim Resort Convention Center redemption chart may 2023

Finding a string of off-peak prices isn’t hard, and with a four-night stay coming to a total of 48,000 points, it topples the Hilton and Marriott options. It is important to note that Hyatt does not offer the fifth night free on award bookings, another big difference from the Marriott and Hilton options in this article.

Best Hotel Options If You Hold Hotel Loyalty Program Elite Status

If you find yourself with a significant elite status level with either Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy, there are a few options worth considering nearby Disneyland.

Hilton Honors

Hilton’s newly introduced “benefit” of a dining credit rather than a complimentary breakfast greatly hinders the attractiveness of its properties near Disneyland. The options for brands near the park entrance are limited to Garden Inn’s and Tapestry Collection, which have a maximum dining credit of $30 per room per day.

hilton breakfast dining credit in united states

The silver lining is that the SunCoast Park Hotel Anaheim, Tapestry Collection property is surprisingly less expensive on points, with rooms available for as low as 42,000 Hilton points per night.

SunCoast Park Hotel Anaheim Tapestry Collection may 2023 redemption calendar

While the elite benefits at this hotel may not wow you, if you’ve got some Hilton points to burn and a trip to Disney in the books, this redemption could make sense for your next Disneyland vacation.

Marriott Bonvoy

Marriott cleans up for hotel choices nearby the park entrance. They have no less than nine hotels within walking distance of the main entrance with various levels of luxury.

map of marriott hotel options with pricing near disneyland

When we stayed, I chose the Sheraton Park Hotel strategically because I knew it had a great Club Lounge for Platinum Elite members.

sheraton park hotel anaheim club lounge

This allowed us to grab a hot breakfast in the morning but, most importantly, fill our water bottles and grab some snacks before we headed out to the park. Disneyland is hot pretty much all year, and it was 30C every day we visited. Having the water before we entered the park saved on the $5 charge per bottle inside.

Not to mention, in the evening, from 5 pm to 7 pm, this lounge offered a Happy Hour of sorts with complimentary alcoholic beverages and some small plates of food. But I wouldn’t be surprised if you preferred to stay in the park all day!

This hotel ranges from 30,000 to 50,000 points per night, making it a great candidate to use a 35,000 point Marriott Free Night Certificate . Make sure the math checks out compared to the cash rates before redeeming. The cash price was reasonable on our dates, so we saved our points for a higher future value.

Using Points for Disneyland Tickets

Tickets are the highest cost when preparing for a Disney vacation, and there aren’t many discounts. There are a few tricks, such as loading up on Disney gift cards at supermarkets with cards that qualify for 5x or 6x multipliers (I’m looking at you, American Express Cobalt card and Scotiabank Gold American Express card).

Buying gift cards is a great way to “earn” extra multipliers on your spending inside the parks, as they can be used for just about every purchase. But for my tickets, I strategically signed up for the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite card and then product switched to the TD Platinum Travel Visa card .

At the time, this netted me 150,000 TD Rewards points worth $750 when redeemed against purchases made through Expedia for TD . What would have cost me $1,000 for two people was a meager $250.

Learn more: TD Rewards Guide: Earn & Redeem Effectively

Alternatively, it is pretty easy to rack up points with the Scotiabank Gold American Express card , however, to redeem your points, the charge needs to code as travel. If you buy your tickets direct through Disney, it will code as entertainment, so showing some love to your local travel agent will unlock far more value.

disneyland trips westjet

The Scotiabank Gold American Express card earns Scene+ Rewards points and gives cardholders the opportunity to earn 5x Scene+ points on grocery, restaurant, and entertainment purchases. This card charges no foreign exchange fees .

Check out our Scotiabank Gold American Express card review for more details.

Alternatively, you could look at cashing out points with the refundable hotel trick and then buying the tickets normally. The trick can be done with CIBC Aventura and BMO Rewards.

Air Miles is the least flexible currency available to redeem against ticket costs as they have no partial redemptions. They also happen to be the hardest currency to rack up, with only a handful of co-branded cards offering small sign-up bonuses. But with uncertainty surrounding their future value, if you’ve got more than 10,000 of them, it’s a great way to burn.

General Tips for a Great Disneyland Vacation

Now that we have the miles and points pieces out of the way, I think it is important to cover a little bit about some general tips to make your Disneyland vacation perfect.

If you last visited Disney a while ago, or not at all, I highly recommend researching how the Disneyland app works. It’s basically going to run your day as you’re inside the park with information on ride waiting times, a live map with directions, and getting dining reservations.

disneyland app attraction wait times map

The optional Genie+ service is also worth it, in my opinion. This service starts at $25 per person, per day, and allows you to use “Lightning Lanes” at various attractions which is effectively a way to skip the standby line. This means you can pack more attractions into your day, which is the goal of many when visiting Disneyland with their family. Genie+ also provides free Photopass pictures, which are taken around the resort by Disney staff.

The park felt busy on the days we attended, but Genie+ allowed us to plan our day 2 hours at a time and skip some of the longer lines. I could write a whole post on how Genie+ works, I recommend everyone to do at least 1 hour of research on it before arriving at the park. I found YouTube videos to be the most helpful vs blog posts.

Finally, don’t be like me and forget to make park reservations. Two days before our first planned day at Disney, I realized I had no reservations for the parks. Contrary to previous years, Disney will turn you away if you haven’t reserved a park day along with purchasing a ticket.

We were able to make it work as space opened up at the last minute (literally the night before), but it added extra stress. Park reservations can be made 120 days before your tickets are valid.

Disneyland is an expensive destination, and there’s no way around it. Flying into the correct airport and staying at the right hotels will make a significant impact on your experience. Not to mention, using fixed-value currencies issued from major banks is the best way to save money on tickets.

Having the right points currencies, paired with some careful planning, and understanding the ins and outs of Disneyland will give you the opportunity to have not only a much better trip but a much better trip that can save you money.

How to Book a Trip to Disneyland on Points

Anyone who has been to a Disney resort, be it Disney World or Disneyland, knows that it comes with a hefty price tag. With some careful planning, though, you can reduce the costs with some strategic moves.

Prior to the pandemic, I wrote a couple of posts on travelling to Disney World on points . This past summer, we spent a week in California and visited Disneyland, California Adventure Park, and Universal Studios Hollywood.

In This Post

Diversify your points currencies, use companion vouchers or points for flights to disneyland, save on disneyland accommodations using points, redeem points for a disney resort stay, book theme park tickets with points, maximize earning with disney gift cards, putting it all together.

Saving for a Disney trip requires the same strategy we’ve been employing all along: credit card welcome bonuses and maximizing earnings on daily spending. Specific to Disney, the difference is in which cards one needs to sign up for, and which points currencies one needs to earn.

Generally speaking, we tend to focus a lot on American Express Membership Rewards , Aeroplan , and RBC Avion for their versatility in flight and hotel redemptions. You’ll still need these currencies when it comes to booking your flights and hotels, but when it comes to other costs, you’ll need to focus your strategies elsewhere.

When booking a family trip to Disneyland, using points from a variety of programs comes into play. For flights and hotels, you can use the usual suspects, while to pay for Disney park passes and other incidentals, you can explore various flexible points programs.

Of course, the bigger the family you have, the more you may need to diversify your point currencies to cover the costs.

Flights to Disneyland are easy to book with cash or points, as Air Canada and WestJet both provide flights into Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The only thing is that LAX is located up to over an hour’s drive from Disneyland, depending on traffic.

If you’re travelling from Calgary or Vancouver, WestJet runs a direct flight into John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County, which can cut the drive to Disneyland by more than half. Air Canada also flies from Vancouver to Orange County, so if you’re based out of Western Canada, be sure to consider both options.

For most families, flying economy will be the way to go, given that most flights to Disneyland will only be three to five hours in duration.

If you’re booking with cash, then make use of a companion voucher to reduce the cost. You’ll want your partner to get one, too, if you’re travelling as a family of four of more, which cuts down the cost by up to 50%.

CIBC is still offering a  Buddy Pass  as part of its sign up bonus for the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card . With no additional costs other than the taxes and fees for the second ticket, this is essentially a 2-for-1 ticket to anywhere in North America.

Although less appealing, with an Amex Aeroplan Reserve Card , you can earn an Annual Worldwide Companion Pass redeemable on Air Canada flights after spending $25,000 each year. Unlike the Buddy Pass, there is a nominal base fare that is charged to redeem the pass that ranges from $99 to $599, depending on your destination.

Keep in mind the pass is deposited after your annual renewal date, rather than right after meeting the spend.

Signing up for the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard will entitle you an annual companion voucher. This companion voucher usually shows up within a month or two of getting the card.

Even with a $119 base fare for a second ticket within North America, you can still find great savings with WestJet’s companion voucher. If you’re travelling during peak seasons, there can be considerable savings.

Keep in mind that you can also apply WestJet Dollars to your booking. Just be sure to keep an eye on WestJet’s  taxes and fees , which you’ll be required to pay no matter what.

When booking on points with Aeroplan, the redemption rates for economy flights within North America are usually within the predicted range, even with dynamic pricing . The only exception is if you’re travelling during peak season, or booking really close to your date of travel, where the prices are likely to be high.

When we booked our flights from Toronto to Los Angeles in the summer, we were able to book round-trip for a total of 20,000 Aeroplan points per person, having booked six months out.

Most families will probably opt to stay in a hotel, and most of us in the points game will lean towards a Marriott, Hilton, or Hyatt property. There are at least a couple of options around Disneyland for each brand.

In Canada, Marriott Bonvoy points are the easiest currency to accumulate of the three. I’ll focus on the Marriott properties, as we stayed at two of them.

The Westin Anaheim , Courtyard Anaheim Theme Park Entrance , and the  Fairfield Anaheim Resort are the closest Marriott properties to Disneyland. The Westin is around a 20-minute walk to the park entrances, while the Courtyard and Fairfield are only around ten minutes by foot.

The redemption rates for the coming year are as follows:

  • The Westin Anaheim costs between 52,000–70,000 Bonvoy points.
  • The Courtyard Anaheim Theme Park Entrance costs between 52,000–70,000 Bonvoy points.
  • The Fairfield Anaheim Resort costs between 31,000–42,000 Bonvoy points.

If you have a few Free Night Award certificate from your Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card  or your Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card , you can burn them at the Fairfield. Recall that award certificates can be topped-up by up to 15,000 points , effectively making your annual certificate worth up to 50,000 points.

The Westin will cost on average $300 (USD) per night before taxes. It’s harder to justify redeeming points if you find rates around $300 (USD).

Since it’s a Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR) property, if you hold an American Express Platinum Card , you can get pretty good value paying the cash rate when considering the perks that come along with it.

The Courtyard costs on average $300–500 (USD) before tax, and tends to be the most expensive of the three. As we found out, this was for a good reason, for its ever-so-popular onsite waterpark.

The Fairfield is the most economical option, costing around $200–300 (USD) before taxes. Unfortunately, unlike other Fairfields, breakfast at this property is not complimentary.

We stayed at both the Westin Anaheim and the Courtyard Anaheim Theme Park, so stay tuned for upcoming reviews.

Amex sometimes offers transfer bonuses to Marriott Bonvoy , or offers statement credits for Marriott stays through Amex Offers , which can help knock down the cash cost even further.

Disneyland has three official Disney Resorts, which are located right beside the parks. Some even have direct entry into the parks, which can be very convenient for reducing transit times.

You can expect the cost to be on average $600–800 (USD) a night, though, which is quite steep.

I have yet to stay at any of the Disneyland resorts, as I find I can get better value out of my elite status with hotel programs. However, if convenience is a priority and you want to experience Disney hospitality at its best, there are a few ways you can book them at a fraction of the cost.

The trick here is to use a points currency that can be redeemed as a statement credit to offset the cost. This is when programs such as HSBC Rewards , TD Rewards , or Scotiabank Scene+ come into play.

  • HSBC Rewards points can be redeemed towards travel at 0.5 cents per point (cpp).
  • For travel booked through the Expedia for TD travel portal, TD Rewards points can be redeemed at 0.5cpp. Disney Resorts can be booked through Expedia for TD, allowing for a slightly more favourable redemption.
  • Scotiabank Scene+ points can be redeemed for travel at 1cpp.

Each bank has a few cards under their portfolio that earns their respective reward currencies. Based on the redemption rates above, here are a few examples of how much you could offset your stay by:

  • The HSBC World Elite Mastercard  has a current sign-up bonus of 80,000 points, equivalent to $400.
  • The TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card  has a sign-up bonus of 100,000 TD Rewards points, equivalent to $500.
  • The Scotiabank Gold American Express Card  has a sign-up bonus of 40,000 Scene+ points, equivalent to $400 towards your stay.

On Expedia for TD, you can book a room for five people at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel for $644.01 or 129,000 TD Rewards points. If you don’t have the full amount, you can apply a partial redemption to the booking, effectively reducing the overall cost of your stay.

If you play the Miles and Points game in two-player mode , you can sign up for one, two, or more of these cards to cover the cost of your stay.

Lastly, Amex Membership Rewards points can also be redeemed at 1cpp for travel purchases. Note that this isn’t the best use of these points, so I’d suggest focusing your efforts on the other points currencies we’ve discussed above.

One of biggest costs on a trip to Disneyland are the actual theme park tickets. Luckily, two Canadian loyalty programs allow you to redeem points against theme park tickets: Air Miles Dream Miles and TD Rewards.

For TD Rewards, you can purchase the tickets through Expedia for TD under the “Things To Do” category. To see what dates are available, enter a longer date range in the search field.

If you aren’t looking for a multi-day pass, then perhaps you can use your points towards a single day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood, Legoland, or Knott’s Berry Farm instead. I mean, if you’re in Anaheim already, you may as well visit a few other parks, right?

Air Miles allows redemptions for Disney tickets through redtag.ca. After you sign in to your account, you can find US theme parks under Travel, and then US Parks.

Unlike Expedia for TD, which offers tickets to a variety of theme parks and attractions, Air Miles Vacations only offers tickets to four US theme parks. Luckily, Disney World, Disneyland, and Universal Studios are included.

Keep in mind that only Dream Miles can be redeemed against travel. So before you start earning, you’ll want to make sure you have selected your Air Miles earning preference to Dream Miles, as opposed to Cash Miles.

Air Miles can be relatively easy to accumulate. Amex has three different Air Miles credit cards, and Bank of Montreal has two.

Personally, I’d opt for the BMO Air Miles World Elite Mastercard , which currently has a welcome bonus of 2,000 Air Miles and a waived annual fee.

If you’re still short on a ticket or two, buying tickets from a trusted third party site like Undercover Tourist  will save you a few dollars off admission tickets. Sometimes, they run promotions for an additional $5 off.

You can also buy tickets directly from  Disneyland’s website , and most of the time, the tickets are at cost. Sometimes, there are promotions for Canadians that have offered up to 35% off.

If you’re buying tickets directly from Disney, consider buying a Disney gift card from a grocery store on a credit card that earns 5x the points on grocery purchases to pay for them, so you can at least maximize your earn. There are a few credit options here, including the American Express Cobalt Card , the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card , and the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Card .

You can also buy Disney gift cards to use while at Disneyland. Almost everything in Disneyland can be paid for with them, including meals, souvenirs, and even Disney Resort stays.

Balances on Disney gift cards can be combined online , up to a maximum of $1,000 per card. This is great, as you can just consolidate your cards.

So, what will it take for a family for four from Toronto to visit Disneyland next March Break?

Let’s assume you and your partner currently hold the following credit cards with the following perks:

  • American Express Platinum Card × 1 = $200 annual travel credit
  • Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card × 2 = 2 Free Night Awards
  • Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card × 2  = 2 Free Night Awards
  • American Express Cobalt Card × 1 = Earn 5x at grocery stores

With some planning, you decide to sign up for the following credit cards and promotions with the following perks at least six months prior to your trip:

  • WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard × 2 = 2 annual companion vouchers and $500 WestJet Dollars
  • TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card × 2 = 200,000 TD Rewards points
  • BMO Air Miles World Elite Mastercard × 1 = 2,000 Air Miles
  • American Express Air Miles Platinum Credit Card × 1 = 2,000 Air Miles
  • Various Sobeys promos throughout the year = 900 Air Miles

To help reduce the cost of flights, you could then make use of your points and vouchers. An example of what it might look like is:

  • 2 × $119 annual companion vouchers + 2 × $700 base fare + 4 × $170 in taxes = $2,318, with $500 WestJet Dollars applied to bring the total cost to  $1,818  out of pocket on WestJet.

For accommodations, you’d make use of Free Night Awards and American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts, which could look like:

  • Four nights at the Fairfield Anaheim Resort using Free Night Awards = $0
  • One night at the Courtyard Anaheim Theme Park Entrance at $624 per night after taxes booked through Amex Travel, applying the $200 annual travel credit with the Amex Platinum Card = $424 (or redeeming 59,000 Bonvoy points)

To book your actual Disneyland park passes with Genie+, you could approach it with the flexible points currencies as follows:

  • Ticket 1: $525.45, bought through Expedia for TD with 100,000 TD Rewards points for $500 on your account = $25.45
  • Ticket 2: $525.45, bought through Expedia for TD with 100,000 TD Rewards points for $500 on partner’s account = $25.45
  • Ticket 3: Redeem 4,828 Air Miles = $0
  • Ticket 4: Buy from the Disneyland website with Disney gift cards bought from Sobeys using your American Express Cobalt card = $525.45

To sum it all up, the total cost of trip before reward redemptions would be $3,480 for the flights, $2,632 for the hotels, and $2,101.80 tickets. This results in a total cost of $8,213.80.

By using Miles and Points to offset the cost, the total cost of trip reduces the price to  $2,818.35,  or a discount of 65%.

Once you factor in the annual fees for the credit cards, the total cost jumps to $4,415.35, or a discount of 54%. On the upside, not only have you cut the cost in half, but you’d still get to enjoy the suite of benefits from your credit cards for the remainder of the year.

Disneyland doesn’t have to cost a fortune, and you can easily save on flights, accommodations, theme park tickets, and more. As with any trip with points, it comes down to planning.

The key is to diversify your points strategy, and perhaps focus on points currencies you may normally overlook, like TD Rewards, Air Miles, and Scotiabank Scene+.

This is just one example of how to take advantage of different reward programs to offset the cost of a family vacation. There are definitely many other combinations of cards and points currencies that can be used that may give you an even bigger discount.

It goes to show that by having just a few cards per adult in your household, you can wind up savings hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on a trip to Disneyland.

DisneylandForward: Everything You Need to Know About Disneyland Resort’s Huge Expansion Plan

Disneyland Resort is planning a massive, multi-year expansion to the theme parks, resorts, and beyond. Here’s a look at what’s in store.

If you’ve ever wished there was more to explore and experience at Disneyland Resort , good news: massive changes are coming! DisneylandForward, a multi-decade project intended to significantly expand both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure park , is expected to bring some incredible new lands, experiences, and attractions to the Happiest Place on Earth.

Walt Disney’s original theme park is about to see serious growth under the DisneylandForward plan, both in size and in utilization of different Disney stories and technologies. While right now DisneylandForward is still in the planning and approval stages, the project earned the city of Anaheim’s official approval with a unanimous vote on May 7, 2024. That vote allows Disneyland Resort to begin work on DisneylandForward – and invest an estimated $1.9 billion in the resorts over the next 10 years.

While there’s still quite a bit to come for DisneylandForward, we’re taking a look at what’s in store for Disneyland Resort and what big changes you can expect to see in the years ahead.

How DisneylandForward Will Change Disneyland Resort

Some of the proposed changes that may happen with DisneylandForward. Photo courtesy of Disney

If you’ve ever visited Disneyland Resort, you’ve likely noticed that it’s quite compact. Set right in the middle of busy Anaheim, which grew up along with Disneyland, the resort has a strictly defined boundary. The entire resort covers just 4,800 acres – making it far smaller than Walt Disney World Resort’s 30,000 acres.

As a result, it’s difficult for Imagineers and Disney executives to build beyond the two theme parks and current hotels. Add in local city planning restrictions on what land around the resort can be used for, and it’s easy to see why Disneyland hasn’t grown too significantly since the 2001 expansion (which added California Adventure, Downtown Disney, and Disney’s Grand Californian Resort & Spa).

The DisneylandForward website explains: “We want to bring more Disney investment to Anaheim. However, this becomes more challenging under our current approvals and limited space available in our Parks today. Without updates, new Disney experiences and placemaking, created from our beloved stories, will likely never find their way to the Disneyland Resort as they have to other parks throughout the world.”

The hope for DisneylandForward is that the project will transform Disneyland Resort, bringing not only an expansion of the resort’s footprint, but also brand-new lands, attractions, and even parking and transportation opportunities.

After all, Walt himself said that Disneyland will never be completed – and DisneylandForward would spend the next 40 years growing the park in some incredible ways.

DisneylandForward: New Lands, Attractions, and More

One of the reasons cited for the huge DisneylandForward expansion is Disney hopes to bring new experiences and stories into Disneyland Resort. Specifically, the DisneylandForward website mentions new lands and adventures like those currently under construction or newly opened at Tokyo DisneySea and Shanghai Disneyland.

Specifically, the DisneylandForward website highlights Tangled, which is part of Tokyo DisneySea’s new Fantasy Springs land, as a possibility for Disneyland Park. Peter Pan and a Neverland-like area featuring two attractions is also mentioned (in fact, longtime Disneyland fans might remember there once was a Skull Rock from Peter Pan inside the park!).

Over at California Adventure, DisneylandForward plans to bring some of the most technologically-advanced, immersive, and cutting-edge entertainment from Disney. The expansion at this theme park will draw cues and potential inspiration from Hong Kong Disneyland’s World of Frozen , which allows guests to step inside Arendelle and experience the Frozen films’ worlds in real life. It’ll also draw from Shanghai Disneyland’s Zootopia, which is home to a larger-than-life metropolis that brings guests into the world of Zootopia and features some impressively high-tech attractions.

The DisneylandForward plan also makes mention of Toy Story Land in Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World and TRON Lightcycle / Run , a coaster at both Shanghai Disneyland and Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park as reference points for what the expansion could include.

Of course, since the project only recently earned its approval, details about what exact lands and attractions may come to fruition are still yet to be determined. One thing we do know, though, is that there will be some kind of Avatar representation! In March 2024, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed this , stating “We have one Avatar -based land, Pandora, in Florida; we’re going to put a second one in California.”

Is a Third Theme Park Coming to Disneyland Resort?

While the above map highlights a “Possible Immersive Theme Park,” the color coding suggests that this is merely more creative expansions for Disneyland Park and California Adventure.

Currently, there are no plans for a third theme park included in DisneylandForward. If that changes, we’ll let you know – but for the time being, the project is focused solely on expanding the two existing parks.

What Areas of Disneyland Resort Will Be Affected by Disneyland Forward?

The concept art for the entertainment area that may come to Disneyland Resort. Photo courtesy of Disney

Disneyland Resort as it currently stands will likely be completely reshaped by the DisneylandForward project. With both theme parks seeing large expansions, they’ll extend beyond their current borders and stretch out (and potentially across some existing streets). Additionally, many of the resort’s existing parking lots will change or be demolished to make way for new additions.

While specifics are still to come, we do know that DisneylandForward will have an impact on these key areas of Disneyland Resort:

  • The area west of Disneyland Drive , which covers the sides of Pixar Place Hotel and Disneyland Hotel, some of Downtown Disney, and the parking lots nearby
  • The current Toy Story Lot , which may be transformed from parking lot into a Disney Springs-style area
  • The current Cast Member parking lot off Disney Way , which sits behind the businesses on Harbor Boulevard across from the resort entrance
  • Magic Way , which will be sold to Disney along with other sections of streets in the area

Disneyland Parking Will Be Transformed, Too

While the expansion of Disneyland and California Adventure theme parks are undeniably the most exciting parts of the DisneylandForward project, more will change around the Disneyland Resort. Most notably, parking as it currently stands is set to change – and the resort may even get a central transportation hub to help guests get around.

A number of existing parking lots for both guests (like the Toy Story Lot and Downtown Disney parking lot) and Cast Members are set to disappear or change radically as the theme parks expand.

According to the DisneylandForward website, Disney plans to “significantly invest in transportation, parking, transit, and pedestrian safety measures to improve mobility throughout The Anaheim Resort.” What that means for Disneyland is:

  • A new parking destination will be created on the resort’s east side
  • The new parking destination will include one to three pedestrian bridges

More parking changes may ultimately take place as plans firm up and DisneylandForward begins to take shape.

When Will Disneyland’s Expansion Be Complete?

While the news about all of the big changes and theme park expansions is exciting, the work is going to take some time. With the Anaheim City Council’s approval, Disney can now begin cementing its plans for DisneylandForward – but it’ll still take some time before work officially gets underway.

DisneylandForward is expected to take as long as 40 years to fully be completed. There is a 10-year timeframe mentioned in the current plans, but it’s unclear what, exactly, will open within the project’s first decade.

We’ll keep you updated as the project progresses and we learn more about what, exactly, is coming to Disneyland Resort!
