Before the start of your telehealth visits, you should:

• Know the costs. Before the visit, ask how much it will cost. If you can’t afford the visit or do not have health insurance, your health care provider may have local resources.
• Ask for help if needed. Let your provider know if you need support like a screen reader, closed captioning, a translator, or other help.
• Check your visit details. Your health care provider will remind you about your visit. They may send you a text, email, call, or message in the patient portal (video). Sometimes there are forms to fill out or directions on how to start your telehealth visit.
• Find a good spot. Choose a quiet place with good access to the internet. Make sure you are comfortable and can talk openly.
• Test your technology.  Make sure your internet and the device you are using for the visit works well. Sometimes, a member of your health care provider’s team will help you test. If you have technology problems, look at these technology trouble shooting tips .

Learn what you need and how to start your video visit.

There are many tools or apps for telehealth video visits. They might look a little different from each other, but they all work in similar ways. After you log in, here is what to look for:

This button controls your camera. When you see a slash through it, that means your health care provider cannot see you.

This button controls your microphone. When you see a slash through it, that means your health care provider cannot hear you.

When you click this button, a chat box will open up. The chat box lets you type and send messages to your health care provider.

This button is usually red. Clicking on it will end your telehealth video meeting.

Once you are logged in to your appointment, you should:

• Adjust lighting. Make sure your health care provider can clearly see you.
• Steady camera. Keep your device stable. Put your computer on a desk or table or use something to hold up your phone or tablet.
• Be centered. Sit so your face is in the middle of the screen and the camera is at the same height as your eyes. Remember, how you look on the screen is how your health care provider will see you.
• Check sound. Make sure you can hear well. Test your speakers or earphones and adjust the volume if needed.
• Close extra stuff. Shut down other things on your computer or device. This can make your internet faster and you won't get distracted.

Feeling prepared and knowing what to expect will help you have a successful visit. Some tips for success include:

• Sign on early. If something goes wrong or you can't get the video to start, you can message your provider or call their office.
• The medicines you are taking and how much
• Any problems, worries, or questions you want to discuss
• Your temperature, weight, blood pressure, or blood sugar level
• Allergies to food or medicine.
• Stay on track. It is best not to eat or drink during a telehealth visit. And always be safe — do not have a telehealth visit while you are driving or running errands.
• Be patient. Sometimes health care providers are running late, just like in a regular provider office. Be patient if you have to wait.

Confident means that you have the information and ability to speak for yourself during your health care visits. In order to feel confident in your telehealth visit, you should:

• Learn how telehealth works.  It is okay to ask your provider how the telehealth visit will work and what to expect.
• Share your name and pronouns.  Tell the provider the name you like to be called and your pronouns. They should respect your preferences.
• Take your time.  This is your visit. You shouldn’t feel rushed or like you can’t speak up.
• Pick a good provider.  Find a health care provider who really listens to you and what you are feeling.
• Ask questions.  If something isn’t clear, ask your provider to explain it. Make sure you understand their answers.
• Get a summary. After the visit, ask the provider to send you a summary or notes. This can include answers to the questions you asked.
• Only share what makes you comfortable.  You decide what you want to tell your health care provider. If you don’t want to answer something, it is okay to say so.
• Know your rights.  Understand what information your provider can share and what they can’t. Learn how your personal health information is   kept safe during your telehealth visit and what you can do to protect your privacy .

Why go out of your way for quality care when you can have a video visit anytime, anywhere? A video visit 1 is a virtual chat you can have with your primary care physician from any remote location, using your smartphone, tablet, or other camera-equipped device.

When you’re dealing with a cold, the flu, or physical pains, the last thing you want to do is leave the comfort of your home to make a trip to the doctor. With video visits, your doctor can come to you instead.

Video visits are available for many conditions, including:

• Cough, cold, sore throat, allergies, and sinus conditions
• Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
• Aches and pains
• Minor injuries
• Skin conditions
• Urinary issues
• Sleep or mood problems

Video visits are also great for getting quick, easy advice from your physician regarding previous conditions that have not improved, chronic and mental health conditions, and the proper use of medication for various conditions.

Because your primary care physician can access your health information via your electronic medical record, your care is always seamless, convenient, and connected. You get the same quality care from a video visit that you would when visiting your personal physician in their office.

Making the most of video visits You can schedule video visits online at kp.org or by using the Kaiser Permanente (KP) app. If you are unsure whether your symptoms qualify for a video visit, call the Kaiser Permanente appointment line at 800-777-7904 (TTY 711 ), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

To schedule a video visit, you must be registered on kp.org and have either a computer with a webcam, 2 or a smartphone or tablet with the KP app downloaded. To join your scheduled video visit, 3 log in to the KP app on your mobile device, or log in to kp.org on your computer, then navigate to the Appointment Center and click “Join Appointment.”

1 Video visits are available to Kaiser Permanente members who have a camera-equipped computer or mobile device and are registered at kp.org. You must be present in Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC, for visits with your primary care physician or mental health provider. For urgent video visits with an emergency doctor, you may also be present in West Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, or Pennsylvania. Video visits are for certain medical or mental health conditions. For video visits with a mental health provider, appointments can be scheduled for follow-up care. 2 Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox are not compatible browsers. 3 If you are under 18, please have a parent or legal guardian present by video or by phone at the scheduled time to provide verbal consent.

Video Visit Frequently Asked Questions

Video visits are similar to in-office visits, but instead of traveling to see your doctor, you can video chat with them from home. Our care providers can assess your symptoms, make a diagnosis, recommend treatment and send prescriptions to your pharmacy. 

Video visits are available for adults and for children of all ages, and are available to new patients in addition to those who already have a UChicago Medicine doctor.

How do I schedule a video visit?

Our real-time,  online scheduling for video visits  lets you choose from available times so you can book your virtual appointment instantly with a primary care or specialty care provider.

How does a video visit work?

Your provider’s office will send you a link to a secure link to a video session through your MyChart account or to your email. If you do not have MyChart, please provide your email address to your provider. Ten minutes before your scheduled appointment time, please click on the link and wait for your provider to join the session.

During your visit:

• Place your computer in a safe spot so it cannot get knocked over. This is very important if you have a child taking part in a pediatric visit. 
• Shut down any other programs on the device you are using to improve the speed and quality of your video visit.
• If you are using a smartphone, prop it up on a stable surface rather than holding it.
• Speak clearly into your microphone. If someone else is joining your visit, make sure only one person is speaking at a time. Turn off any background noise such as the television and radio, and have everyone put their phones on silent or vibrate.
• Give your doctor or nurse or healthcare team a phone number they can call to do the visit over the phone, in case you are having problems with the video.

Before your visit ends, make sure to:

• Ask your healthcare team when and how you should follow up. This may include picking up medications from your pharmacy, getting tests done at a nearby lab, or making your next appointment. 
• Make sure to tell your doctor or nurse which pharmacy you use.

How should I prepare for my video visit?

Before your visit you should do the following:

Write down your questions before your visit.

• You can take your own vital signs before the visit if you have the tools you need. Vital signs can include your temperature, blood pressure, heart rate counted over one minute, your oxygen level, blood sugar, body weight and temperature. If you take your vital signs, write them down on a piece of paper so you can tell your doctor, nurse or healthcare team

If you check things like your blood pressure or blood sugar levels on a regular basis, have your log and readings with you, including the dates and times of each reading, so you can show those to your doctor.

Have a small light nearby (such as a flashlight or a phone light) to help your doctor examine parts of your body like your throat or eyes.

If you have concerns about skin problems, such as a rash or a wound, you can send a picture to your doctor or nurse or healthcare team with MyChart Messaging before the visit. This may give them a better view of your skin than the video can. 

For your video visit, you'll need: 

A computer, tablet, or smartphone with an internet connection. If using a computer or tablet, have your phone with you in case your doctor needs to call you.

A piece of paper and pen to write down your questions and take notes.

Your medication bottles. Have them with you during your visit and note the ones that need refills.

Find a good space for your visit:

Use an area with good lighting, but not one that has a window behind you.  

Make sure your space will be quiet for the whole visit. You can also use headphones if you have trouble hearing your doctor or nurse or healthcare team.

Choose a private space so you can talk with the doctor or nurse or healthcare team about your private healthcare information or show parts of your body, if needed for the exam.

NYC Health + Hospitals offers New Yorkers telemedicine and telehealth services. We have several options such as telephone appointments, video visits, an online patient portal to connect with our health care providers without coming into the doctor’s office or hospital, as well as virtual ExpressCare for urgent care services.

MyChart is NYC Health + Hospitals’ patient portal. It is a free and secure online tool where you can view and manage your health information at any time. It is the best way to connect with your doctor and health care providers from home.  Learn more

Video Visits

What is a Video Visit? A video visit is a video chat with your doctor. Instead of traveling to see your doctor in-person, you can have your appointment with them from home, work, or another convenient location.

• Interpreter services are always available for your video visit!
• Many Health + Hospitals providers, therapists, and other care providers now offer secure and confidential video visits.
• You can join your video visit through MyChart or your provider can send you a text or email to join.

How to Join a Video Visit Using Smartphone/Tablet + MyChart App

• Download the MyChart app from the  Apple Store  or  Google Store . Using the MyChart app will guarantee the best user experience on a smartphone.
• Login into the  MyChart app  on your smartphone or tablet
• Tap the  Appointments  icon.
• Tap  Your Video Visit .
• To prepare for your visit in advance, you can tap  eCheck-In .
• To join your visit, tap  Start Video . The doctor will join when they are ready

How to Join a Video Visit Using Computer (PC or Mac)

• Login to  MyChart  using your computer.
• Click the  Visits  icon at the top of the homepage.
• Under  Appointments and Visits , select the Appointment Date for your video visit and click the Details button.
• To prepare for your visit in advance, you can tap  Prepare for Your Visit .
• To join your visit, tap  Start Your Video Visit . The doctor will join when they are ready.

What to expect during your video visit:

• Join your video visit  10 minutes  before your scheduled appointment time.
• If your doctor does not appear immediately, we request that you stay on for  30 minutes  after your scheduled appointment time. There is a possibility that your doctor is running late.
• When your doctor is ready, they will start the visit and you will be able to see and hear each other.
• If the video does not work, your doctor may call you on your phone. Make sure the mobile phone number in MyChart is the correct number for your doctor to reach you.

What is a telephone visit? Telephone visits are visits with your doctor over the phone instead of face to face. Your doctor calls you at the scheduled time at the number you give us. You do not need to come into the practice.
