Mason Elephant Lodge

Ubud, Gianyar Regency, Indonesia

  • Full Review
  • Unique forest resort on eight acres with 31 elephants
  • Spacious rooms have flat-screen TVs, minibars, and balconies
  • Suites have bar counters, sitting areas, and whirlpool tubs
  • Elephant park (a con for some ) features a pool, show arena, and photo shop
  • Elephant museum, a botanical garden, and a gift shop on-site
  • Restaurant includes elephant watching, a bar, and cafe
  • Outdoor pool is small but peaceful
  • Small gym offers modern machines and free weights
  • Atrium spa features treatment rooms and a whirlpool tub
  • Rafting, kayaking, biking, hiking, and elephant safari trekking all can be booked through the hotel
  • Free Wi-Fi, breakfast, parking, and Ubud shuttle
  • Location is removed from the Ubud attractions
  • Some rooms don’t have elephant chauffeur service
  • Elephant riding is for those who don't mind getting dirty
  • On-site dining is pricey
  • Elephants are chained up at times for safety reasons which can upset some guests, and this type of attraction is considered controversial

Bottom Line

The 25-room Elephant Safari Park & Lodge is a luxury property that delivers a one-of-a-kind vacation on a refuge with 31 Sumatran elephants, safari rides, elephant chauffeur service, a show arena, a museum, a gift shop, and a botanical garden. There’s also a modern gym, spa, and on-site indoor and outdoor dining. Balinese-style rooms have flat-screen TVs, safes, and elephant pick-up platforms, and some even have elephant park views. Suites feature whirlpool tubs and butler service. The gritty safari experience (which requires getting your hands dirty) isn’t for everyone, and the location is a bit removed from the sights, but it nonetheless delivers a luxurious stay with high-end amenities and features. Wi-Fi, breakfast, and parking are all free.

Oyster Hotel Review

Luxury elephant park and lodge with shows, elephant rides, and a museum.

elephant safari park lodge bali reviews

The Elephant Safari Park & Lodge was founded in 1997 by England-born Nigel Mason, who rescued nine mistreated elephants that were living on a rice field in Bali. The English businessman then transported 18 more rescue elephants from Sumatra to the park, which has since hosted visits from celebrities like David Beckham, Jessica Biel, and Julia Roberts. Two double wooden doors at the park entrance (visitors can also come for day tours) lead into the property that’s adorned with elephant statues and carvings. There are beautiful rice paddy views and a botanical garden that has fishponds, patio seating, and canopy beds.

Staying at the lodge offers a unique experience where guests can interact with a herd of 31 endangered Sumatran elephants. A line of elephant chauffeurs, with their manhout (rider/trainer), take guests from their doorsteps every night to dinner. Some guests complain, however, about elephants being chained for certain times of the day (elephant rides are controversial animal attractions ). Guests can ride elephants while they bathe in a pool, watch an elephant talent show, or visit a museum that features a 15,000-year-old mammoth skeleton. The large gift shop sells elephant souvenirs, clothing, and jewelry. There’s also a photo shop to capture guests riding elephants.

Secluded hilltop location in Taro Village

The resort is located on a hilltop, surrounded by forests and rice fields in Taro village. The remote location isn’t in a very walkable area. It’s a 10-minute drive to the closest town where there are a few cafes, a market, and shops. The bustling Ubud district -- with Ubud Market and Ubud Palace -- is 30 minutes away by car (the hotel provides a free shuttle). A car trip to Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, Blanco Renaissance Museum, and Campuhan Ridge Walk, will take about 35 minutes. The Ngurah Rai International Airport is an hour and 45 minutes by car. Elephant Cave, or Goa Gajah, is 30 minutes by car.

Large rooms and suites with elephant decor, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and balconies with elephant park views

elephant safari park lodge bali reviews

All four room types offer stylish and simple Balinese designs, wooden elephant-footed beds, rattan furniture, thatched-roof ceilings, stone tile floors, writing desks, and elephant artwork. Features include flat-screen TVs, minibars, iPod docks, umbrellas, bathrobes, slippers, air-conditioning, coffeemakers, free Wi-Fi, balconies, and elephant boarding platforms. Marble bathrooms have hairdryers, toilet hoses, and lovely glass walk-in showers. Paddy View Rooms do not have elephant chauffeur boarding platforms, but look out at rice paddies. Park View Rooms offers two floors, views of the elephant park, and sitting areas. The Taro Executive Suite has two bedrooms, elephant park views, floor-to-ceiling glass doors, a wraparound terrace, a sitting area, a master bedroom with a sitting area, private butler service, a bar with a counter, a whirlpool tub, and a bidet.

On-site dining and cocktails, an outdoor pool, a gym, spa services, and outdoor adventures

elephant safari park lodge bali reviews

The Park Restaurant serves Indonesian fare beside the elephant pool. The Mammoth’s Head Bar offers a buffet, patio seating, and a lounge with a sectional sofa and a flat-screen TV. The Ivory Cafe serves pizza, sandwiches, and snacks. A small outdoor pool is surrounded by palms and a deck with a few lounge chairs. White water rafting, kayaking, hiking, and mountain biking can also be arranged. Night or day elephant safari rides are available. The small gym has modern cardio machines, free weights, and a flat-screen TV. The Safari Wellness Spa features an atrium lobby, joint treatment rooms with dividing curtains, and a whirlpool tub with elephant park views. Wi-Fi, breakfast, and parking are all free.

What a day with elephants. It was a pricey visit but no different than swimming with dolphins, going to Disneyland, or going to Sea World - you get what you pay for and this was a great experience for me and my family. We did it all and thoroughly enjoyed every moment. The rain did not stop us from having an amazing experience learning about and interacting with elephants. Never have I had a chance to be so close to elephants and the staff there were nothing but friendly and hospitable - willing to do whatever it took to help us have a great time. You MUST do the swim with the elephants - prepare to get wet but bring a change of clothes because they have a HOT shower and towels waiting for you. We ran into Mr. Nigel Mason and I was impressed with his willingness to spend time talking to us and answer questions. Any quality owner/leader takes time to meet with the people that keep his business running.

Feed elephants, ride elephants, eat lunch, watch performances and buy souvenirs. This is basically the process. In fact, the Elephant Park where visitors can walk freely is not very large, a large area can only be entered by riding elephants, but also can not walk freely. Elephants are directed by elephant husbands to walk inside. In other words, this elephant performance, 15 minutes, and extremely simple movements, feel nothing special, here is the Elephant Park.

user-icon

Looking forward to riding an elephant for a long time, we can finally achieve Haha. We ride a 13-year-old girl elephant. The staff said that they receive five guests a day on average. Then there are more than 30 elephants in it. Only the male elephants have ivory. The performance of the elephant is also very good. It's a little expensive just to wash the photos. ~ We washed a converted RMB 60 yuan. In the end, it was carelessly lost

Welcome to the official page of the Mason Elephant Park & Lodge in Bali. Initiated in 1997 and set within the misty hinterlands of Ubud, our park was created in response to the devastating situation in Sumatra where rampant deforestation and poaching have dwindled the native elephant population.

Our multi-award-winning park is Bali’s only dedicated elephant rescue facility and is home to Bali’s largest herd of critically-endangered Sumatran elephants, 6 of which were born here. The park provides guests with the rare opportunity to interact and learn about these gentle giants while giving our healthy herd a comfortable and safe environment to call home.

The park is set within 4.5 hectares and has been carefully landscaped to mimic the original habitat of our elephant’s native home in Sumatra. The location in central Bali was also chosen for its cooler climate and lush environment, which helps to keep the herd cool and comfortable in this tranquil landscape.

We do not use brutal or cruel training methods, as all training is by repetition, reward, and patience. To learn more about our park, please take the time to watch the following introduction video below.

“Amazing experience”

The Elephant safari, was a unique experience we fed the elephants, took amazing pictures, watched a show beyond belief they were playing football, basketball, painting and doing acrobatics. We eventually rode the elephant through the forest was an amazing experience one of the highlights of my trip to Bali! Must go!

“Amazing Experience”

We treated ourselves to one night here as on our honeymoon in Bali. Was a tremendous experience. The elephants are beautiful and well looked after. We had an elephant chauffeur in the evening who took us to a candle lit dinner... Very romantic! A magical experience and a must do when in Bali.

“Elephant feeding and first time ride!”

Coming from the tropical island Of Seychelles, was great and awesome to see and feed those mammoth animals really close. As we do not have any kind of wild animal back home it was an unforgettable once in a lifetime experience. Feeding the elephants at close range and being able to touch them was simply amazing!!

Getting close to the elephants and washing and scrubbing them brought me such happiness. Also I signed up for cycling and rafting, organized by Bali Adventure Tours, for which I got a discount due to staying as a guest. Very well-organized and superb guides!

“Great Experience!”

It is clearly visible that the elephants are very well looked after as well as their environment. In addition, the staff are knowledgeable and gave us loads of information about each of the elephants and their history. Breakfast was good and the price of photos was very reasonable!

“Sleeping with the Elephants”

It was unreal just looking at all the elephants. They are all extremely well looked after and fed and loved. Slept comfortably in the air conditioned room, we woke and went down to wash and then swim with the elephants. This is an unforgettable resort destination, and would recommend to any and all travelers.

“Wonderful”

We had a lovely time here. The room was very comfortable but of course the highlight was getting up close to these beautiful animals. We watched them being bathed and gently cared for by their mahouts who just spoke to them to get them to turn or lie down which the elephants did happily.

Bali Tours and More

Elephant Safari Park Bali

Bali is a destination of alluring natural beauty. Tropical rainforests and volcanic mountains, gorgeous sandy beaches to mesmerize you and several monuments and temples to take you back through history. The Elephant Safari Park Bali adds to this experience, allowing you to closely and humanely interact with these magnificent creatures in an undeniably stunning setting.

Imagine getting personal and up-close with rare wildlife species right before retreating to a first-class hotel? If you are looking for a once in a lifetime and gratifying experience, the Elephant Safari Park is where you need to be. An excursion to this elephant park is among the most memorable activities any Bali visitor will experience.

Situated in the beautiful interior of Bali, approximately 18km north of Ubud, The Elephant Park is among the most breathtaking experiences to behold. Operated by Mason Adventures, it is open from 8 a.m. down to 6 p.m. The cost depends on the activities which you take part in during your visit.

The assortment of activities includes exclusive elephant rides, a research center, a restaurant, a small-sized botanical garden, a museum and overnight accommodation in the form of a lodge. It is simply a visitor’s paradise, and perhaps more importantly, the park is dedicated to taking care of retired working elephants, ensuring a better life for them. At this park you have the opportunity to get up-close with 31 Sumatran elephants.

In line with the World Zoo Association, this Bali Park adheres to strict International animal care standards. It took a combined three years to establish this exceptional park. It was designed to safeguard the endangered Sumatran elephant species and was first opened to the public in 2000.

The park was carefully designed and landscaped so that it as closely as possible reflects the original Sumatran habitat of the elephants. You do not need to worry about animal cruelty – repetition, reward and patience are the only tools used for training elephants here. If you choose to go on an elephant, rest assured that this will not be causing the animal any pain or discomfort. Specially designed and made light weight wooden seats are well padded so sit comfortably on the elephants back. This exercise actually helps the elephants stay fit, healthy and strong.

The Park follows the ‘5 Freedoms of Animal Welfare’ which were established in 1965 in Great Britain. These freedoms are: freedom from hunger and thirst; freedom from discomfort; freedom from pain, injury or discomfort; freedom to express; and freedom from fear and distress. In two decades of operation, the part has been recognized internationally by a number of animal welfare organizations, including the National Geographic Society and being a partner in conservation with the World Wildlife Foundation.

Its exceptional state has even led it to be labeled The Best Elephant Park in the World by none other than Steve Irwin, the renowned ‘crocodile hunter’ and conservationist from Australian. Such is its popularity that numerous high-end tourists and famed personalities constantly find their way here, including. David Beckham, Dolf Lundgren, Posh Spice, Johnny Knoxville, Julian Lennon and Steve’ O among many others.

One of the few factors that define its status is the near heavenly setting. Mountains, rainforests, and artfully landscaped botanical gardens encircle these 31 Sumatran elephants residing here. What’s more, the park is also home to the only mammoth skeleton in Southeast Asia, which is over 15,000 years old. It is part of the more than 1000 exhibits that grace the comprehensive museum in the park.

Other amenities found in the spectacular museum include an exclusive Information Centre comprising displays and a graphic history of the elephants, a spa, not to forget the grand elephant memorabilia collection just to mention but a few. As you might expect, most of the activities in this park revolve around the massive creatures. Lucky for you, you can touch, feed, photograph and even ride on them. As aforementioned, the Park’s operator, Mason Adventures, provides an assortment of package choices among them overnight stays in the onsite park lodge. Nonetheless, if you prefer visiting during the day, you can arrive early in the morning for a full day, or if you’d prefer have a half day visit.

Naturally, you can admire the Sumatran elephants in the gorgeous tropical setting. You can witness first-hand how they immerse themselves deep in the park’s lake, take a ride on them, feed each with your hand, or even take pictures with them, among many other exciting activities. If you choose to go for the elephant ride as part of your park tour package, you can enjoy sensational rides from the safety of comfortable teak seats perched on their backs.

The tour follows a special track within the park, and lunch is served right next to the lake where the elephants take their routine baths. Once you are done here, the next stop is an even better site to behold. You are guided into an arena where you get entertained by three elephants in an exclusive talent show that takes place every day.

Although this show is quite short (just 15 minutes), it is, however, an interesting way to learn the natural behavior of the largest mammal on the land. What’s more, it is also a way to demonstrate the innate intelligence of the elephants. This is particularly visible when they engage in small tricks like kicking soccer balls, shooting a basketball, painting and even swinging hula hoops. And while these creatures are acting in a ‘professional capacity,’ they are however not punished if they bail on their entertainment tasks. At the park, the elephants wellbeing is placed above their value as a tourist attraction.

Finally, you can dine and wine on a delicacy of cuisine options derived from the island at the spectacular 200 seating capacity lakeside restaurant. What’s more, you can also stroll around and purchase various elephant affiliated souvenirs at the Park’s gift shop. Some of the items you will find at the gift shop include clothing, jewelry, paintings, and carvings.

5 out of 5 – Amazing experience with very friendly staff

elephant safari park lodge bali reviews

We visited the park yesterday with my boyfriend. Unfortunately we arrived late because of heavy rain (just twenty minutes before the park closed), but the staff wasn’t in a hurry at all. A guy took us around the museum and the park and gave us a lot of information and stories about the 31 elephants. The elephants are trained by the “mahouts” with fruit and not violence. The elephants don’t get forced to do anything the don’t want and through mating season they are kept somewhere apart from the park. Yes, they are chained during the night and when they eat for safety reasons – so they won’t fight or run away. They also get to have a day off from the park. Overall a very good impression. We chose not to ride on the elephants, just to see them. They let us feed them and even asked us to stay to see the one elephant doing its bath. For me the elephants seem relaxed, friendly and happy, and the staff don’t seem to fuss about getting more money as other places in Bali.

Another thing to add – as we stayed more than half an hour after closing we came find our bike with a flat tire. The staff stayed and even brought a mechanic to fix the tire.

So in general a very good experience and a great “thank you” to the amazing staff! – Simona W

5 out of 5 – The MOST fun place to visit in all of Bali!

elephant safari park lodge bali reviews

We had a driver thank goodness to take us to this wonderful elephant sanctuary. Our elephant trainer has been with his elephant for 19 years and said she is his FIRST wife!. They are rescued from Sumatra where their habitat has been destroyed. This is the most wonderful place to visit. You can visit the elephants up close and personal, go for a ride and watch them do things such as kick soccer balls, paint and walk along the elephant plank. There is a museum and a very good restaurant as well as there are bungalows in which one can stay if so desired. Go see if first hand! – teri1352 from Portland, Oregon

5 out of 5 – Oh My!

elephant safari park lodge bali reviews

What a fantastic day out! one hour from Nusa Dua resort but well worth a visit, we passed rice fields and school children immaculately turned out and well behaved. I feared that the elephants may have been over worked or badly treated but this was not the case. Must had been with their ‘companion’ for years, some 20yrs and the followed them around. The elephants were a joy to watch playing football and painting which only lasted a max of 15 mi s before they were left alone. As the park was quiet we were left alone with 2 elephants which we fed at our leisure. Accordingly there are 31 elephants and they rotate the workload so as not to create apathy. The breeding programme is slow going sadly. The park could raise more money by having drop bins so visitors could put spare cash in. The park do not ask for donations and I think they are missing a trick here! Fantastic day out. – Nancy T from London, United Kingdom
