Elon thanks tim cook for tour of ‘apple’s beautiful hq’ as twitter blue on pause to avoid 30% app store fee.

Avatar for Michael Potuck

Following Elon Musk calling out Apple and Tim Cook over a drop in advertising spend on Twitter, its 30% App Store fee, and more, there’s been a shift. This afternoon, Musk tweeted a thank you to the Apple CEO for a tour of the company’s “beautiful HQ.”

In an interesting turn of events, Musk’s tweet – which includes a five-second video pan of what appears to be Apple Park – says “Thanks @tim_cook for taking me around Apple’s beautiful HQ”.

That comes after Musk said the iPhone maker mostly stopped its advertising on Twitter and asked the question “Do they hate free speech in America?” Apple nor Tim Cook responded to that.

If Elon’s tweet this afternoon is as it seems, it appears Cook invited him over to Cupertino to chat in person.

Corroborating the tweet, John Gruber has heard from a source at Apple Park that Cook was seen walking with Musk just now.

30% App Store fee and Twitter Blue

Top comment by freediverx.

One thing we have to hand to Tim Cook is that he's coolheaded and has a high degree of emotional intelligence. Diplomacy over childish sniping when there's a perceived upside to maintaining relations with a difficult individual. And the tour of Apple Park HQ was both gracious as well as a power move.

During some face time with Cook, Musk almost certainly would have also brought up the 30% App Store fee along with what he called threats to withhold Twitter from the App Store.

Reported by Ars Technica via Platformer , Twitter Blue was originally planned to relaunch this week. However, Musk is allegedly working on how to avoid having customers pay for the $8/month service through Apple to skip the 30% App Store fee.

Update: Several hours after his initial tweet, Elon said they had “good conversation” and that Cook cleared up the misunderstanding about the perceived App Store threat.

Tim Cook and Elon Musk Stroll Around the Duck Pond at Apple HQ

Jeff Butts

Just a few days after Elon Musk all but declared war on Apple, the head of Twitter enjoyed a tour of the Cupertino headquarters. Without mentioning what the two discussed, Musk thanked Cook for taking him on a tour of the Spaceship Campus. They even walked around the Apple Park duck pond.

Tim Cook Guides Elon Musk on Tour of Apple HQ

On Monday, Musk was complaining about Apple pulling its ad campaigns from Twitter. He went so far as to suggest the Cupertino-based tech giant hates free speech in the U.S. Fast-forward two days to Wednesday, and the Chief Twit is enjoying a tour of Apple HQ hosted by none other than Tim Cook himself.

Musk thanked Cook ( via Twitter, of course ) for taking him around “Apple’s beautiful HQ.” He included a brief video of the famous Apple Park duck pond, seen previously in videos and photographs by Apple employees.

Thanks @tim_cook for taking me around Apple’s beautiful HQ pic.twitter.com/xjo4g306gR — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 30, 2022

The video doesn’t show any people, at least directly. However, three seconds into the 5-second video, you can see what is presumably Musk’s shadow as he records. Next to his shadow is that of someone whose silhouette closely resembles that of Tim Cook.

What Might the Two Billionaires Have Had to Say to One Another?

While neither Musk nor Apple have commented on what the two corporate leaders discussed, there are a couple of obvious topics. Musk recently said that Apple was “making moderation demands” and threatening to pull Twitter from the App Store. He didn’t say what those demands were, though. Nor did he offer any evidence of Apple threatening to delist the Twitter app.

In the past, though, Apple has cracked down on other social networking apps for failing to adequately prevent harmful speech or misinformation. Notably, the Parler app was removed from the App Store. Since Twitter has recently reinstated more than 62,000 accounts previously suspended for hate speech and misinformation, this could surely become a bone of contention between the two tech giants.

Hitting closer to Twitter’s pocketbook, though, is the paused Twitter Blue subscription. Musk doesn’t want Twitter to have to pay Apple’s 30% commission for the subscription on iOS devices. He even went so far as to call it a “secret 30% tax,” as if Apple was the only app store owner deducting such charges from developer revenue.

Hmmmm, Apple buys Twitter?

Or perhaps Tesla, or both.

Elon Musk tours Apple HQ with Apple CEO Tim Cook

Elon Musk was given a tour of Apple’s headquarters by CEO Tim Cook. The Chief Twit thanked Cook for taking him on the tour and shared a video of a path near a pond.  Although it is not known what the two talked about, Elon Musk shared concerns on Twitter that Apple was threatening to boot the Twitter app from the App Store.

Thanks @tim_cook for taking me around Apple’s beautiful HQ pic.twitter.com/xjo4g306gR — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 30, 2022

Elon Musk pointed out on Monday that Apple had “mostly stopped advertising” on Twitter and asked if they hated free speech. He then asked Cook what was going on. He also said that Apple had threatened to withhold Twitter from the App Store with no explanation as to why. He also pointed out that Apple puts a “secret 30% tax” on anything bought through the App Store.

The two CEOs’ meeting may prove beneficial to Twitter as it rebuilds and focuses on Twitter 2.0, which promised transparency and safety.

“Twitter’s mission is to promote and protect the public conversation–to be the town square of the internet,” the company said.

OAKLAND, Calif. - Twitter head honcho Elon Musk and Apple CEO Tim Cook appear to have cooled tensions between the two tech giants.

Musk thanked Cook for a tour of the Apple campus in Cupertino, and said they "resolved the misunderstanding" over Twitter possibly being removed from the App Store.

"Tim was clear that Apple never considered doing so," Musk tweeted.

This comes just days after Musk launched a provocative Twitter tirade against Apple, and its CEO. Musk claimed that Apple had withdrawn most of its advertising and was threatening to block the platform from its mobile store where iPhone users download apps. Musk said the move was an act to undermine free speech.

Cook and Apple have not publicly responded to Musk.

Another tech executive chimed in and also criticized Apple for its power over other companies.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg criticized the App Store restrictions that he claims have negatively impacted his own business, according to Yahoo Finance.

"I do think Apple has singled themselves out as the only company trying to control unilaterally what apps get on the device," Zuckerberg said while speaking at New York Times Dealbook Summit. "I don’t think that’s a sustainable or good place to be."

Tim Cook Explains Why Apple Manufactures iPhones In China. Elon Musk Reacts

Apple, the Cupertino tech giant, relies on the vast manufacturing network in China for the mass production of its iPhone and other devices. In recent times, the company has also shifted focus to other key markets, including India, to diversify its manufacturing base. Now, days ahead of the highly-anticipated launch of the iPhone 16 series, an old video of Apple CEO Tim Cook has gained significant attention on social media. In the viral video, Cook is seen addressing the common misconception about why the US-based company has invested heavily in China for its product manufacturing. Debunking the common belief that companies flock to China for cheap labour, Mr Cook said, "There is a confusion about China. And let me at least give you my opinion. The popular conception is that companies come to China because of low labour costs. I am not sure what part of China they go to, but the truth is China stopped being a low labour cost country many years ago." The Apple CEO elaborated on the advanced tooling and precision required to produce the products and highlighted China's vocational expertise in these areas. "The reason is because of the skill, the quantity of skill in one location, and the type of skill it is," he said. Mr Cook noted that the product it makes requires "really advanced tooling and the precision that you have to have in tooling and working with the materials that we do are state of the art."  "And the tooling skill is very deep here. You know, in the US, you could have a meeting of tooling engineers, and I am not sure we could fill the room. In China, you could fill multiple football fields. It's that vocational expertise is very, very deep here," he added. The throwback clip of Tim Cook was shared on social media site X and has garnered six million views so far. It also caught the attention of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who agreed with his views. In the comments section, Mr Musk wrote, "True".

True — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) September 6, 2024

Mr Musk's comment on the Chinese manufacturing sector came just months after his surprise visit to the Asian country where he plans to introduce Tesla's self-driving technology to a market with ferocious competition. On his trip, he met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who praised Tesla as a “successful model” for US-China collaboration. Meanwhile, Apple is currently gearing up for its mega event, 'It's Glowtime'. The tech giant will roll out its all-new iPhone 16 series, besides setting the stage for a new artificial intelligence platform. The event will take place at 10:30 PM on September 9 in India.

Fox News contributor Jonas Max Ferris joined 'Kennedy' to discuss Apple threatening to pull the Twitter from the app store and the likelihood Elon Musk creates his own phone.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter this week to blast Apple Inc.’s policies , but the newly minted Twitter owner said any strain had been resolved by Wednesday afternoon.

Elon Musk met Tim Cook at Apple’s campus on Wednesday. He described it as a "good conversation" and said Cook made it clear that Apple's App Store would not be removing the Twitter app.

Musk also thanked Cook for a tour of the Apple campus in Cupertino, California commenting on their "beautiful HQ."

On Monday, the Musk went on a tirade against Apple saying that the iPhone maker was threatening to remove Twitter from the iPhone App Store, citing Apple’s censorship.

ELON MUSK SAYS TWITTER ‘HAS INTERFERED IN ELECTIONS’

In a series of tweets on Monday, the billionaire CEO of Twitter and SpaceX accused the smartphone maker of no longer advertising on Twitter, insinuating it was because the company is trying to censor content on the platform.

"Apple has mostly stopped advertising on Twitter. Do they hate free speech in America?" Musk wrote.

Later on Monday, Musk created a poll on the social media site asking his followers if "Apple should publish all censorship actions it has taken that affect its customers." Some 85 percent agreed with the poll which garnered over 2 million votes.

Elon Musk said he had a “good conversation” with Apple chief executive Tim Cook and “resolved the misunderstanding” about his claim that Twitter could be removed from the App Store, just days after the world’s richest man unleashed a tirade against the most valuable tech company.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Musk said that “Tim was clear that Apple never considered” potentially removing Twitter from the App Store, describing it as a “misunderstanding.”

Musk, who bought Twitter for $44bn last month, also thanked Cook for “taking me round Apple’s beautiful HQ”, and posted a video from Apple Park.

The volte-face comes after the billionaire entrepreneur on Monday accused Apple of threatening to “withhold Twitter from its App Store” without explaining why, and criticised the iPhone maker for curbing advertising on the platform, writing: “Do they hate free speech in America?”

The Tesla and SpaceX chief executive also raised concerns about Apple’s “in-app purchase” policy, which gives it a 15-30 per cent cut of digital purchases made on the iPhone, and claims that the company abuses its market power.

Musk has previously outlined plans to shift Twitter away from relying on advertising revenues — in which Apple takes no cut — towards more subscription revenues, from which Apple would take a slice.

Apple declined to comment.

The apparent reconciliation comes amid growing concern among some nonprofits and regulators about Musk’s relaxation of Twitter’s content moderation policing. Musk, a self-declared “free speech absolutist”, is reversing most permanent bans on the platform and allowing all speech as long as it is legal, although “negative/hate speech” will be not be boosted in users’ feeds.

The approach has prompted dozens of large brands to pull spending from the platform over fears their advertising may run alongside toxic content.

In a blog post on Wednesday, Twitter said none of its policies had changed and that its trust and safety team remained “strong and well-resourced”.

Apple maintains guidelines requiring social media apps to “block abusive users”, allow users to “report offensive content” and to filter “objectionable material from being posted”.

When Apple expelled Parler, a Twitter rival used by rightwing extremists, Apple said it had “not upheld its commitment to moderate and remove harmful or dangerous content encouraging violence and illegal activity.”

Although the feud appears to be over for now, Musk’s tweets were a catalyst for renewed criticism of Apple that could prove damaging, as antitrust regulators and app developers voice concerns over its rules and the role it plays as “gatekeeper” by deciding what content is allowed on more than 1bn phones worldwide.

Florida’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, warned Apple that removing Twitter from the App Store would be viewed as a “raw exercise of monopolistic power” and “would merit a response from the United States Congress”.

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook parent Meta, was also critical of Apple’s market power during an interview at The New York Times’s Dealbook summit on Wednesday, saying: “I do think Apple has sort of singled themselves out as the only company that is trying to control, unilaterally, what apps get on the [Apple] device and I don’t think that’s a sustainable or a good place to be.”

Apple has been dealing with criticism of the App Store for years. Epic Games, the maker of popular mobile game Fortnite, sued Apple in 2020 but only won on one of the 10 counts. Epic and Apple have both appealed against the decision.

Elon Musk’s sprawling business empire has granted the billionaire a degree of power and global influence that transcends the industries he’s reshaped. He is the leader of no fewer than six hugely influential companies, spanning electric vehicles to wartime communications, and their innovations could shape the fates of nations.  Musk is polarizing, confounding and inescapable. And he is the biggest business story of our time.  Each week, listen in as host David Papadopoulos convenes a panel of Bloomberg Businessweek journalists who are tracking Musk’s companies and the surprising ways they intersect. They break down the business mogul's latest moves and analyze what they could mean for us all.

Musk See TV

After months of back and forth, Brazil finally did what it’s been threatening to do: ban X. This comes on the heels of government complaints from Britain and elsewhere about false information thriving on Elon Musk’s embattled social media platform—some of it from Musk himself. In this episode of Elon, Inc., we dig into Brazil’s action and also talk about the Android app launch of X TV, a way to watch video content from the former Twitter on your home TV screen. Our panel—David Papadopoulos, Max Chafkin and Kurt Wagner—have some ideas. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

SpaceX to the Rescue, Who's Who of X Dramas

Tesla is often heralded as Elon Musk’s premiere company, the business at the foundation of all his other businesses. But as Tesla has struggled and lost market share, it’s SpaceX that keeps surging ahead of the competition. SpaceX is trying to add the first commercial spacewalk to its list of accomplishments, and is set to bail out embattled rival Boeing by retrieving astronauts stranded by its faulty Starliner. This week reporters Loren Grush and Bruce Einhorn sift through the developments and debate if there’s any competition left for SpaceX in this field. Host David Papadopoulos is also joined by reporter Kurt Wagner and editor Sarah Frier to discuss the latest development over at X. Why is Donald Trump all of a sudden posting again on his richest fan’s troubled platform? Will the arrest of Telegram Chief Executive Officer Pavel Durov have any consequences for Musk and X? And why did Diddy invest in Musk's takeover of X? As always with Musk, there’s a lot to talk about. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Listen Now: Misconception

Reality TV stars are freezing their eggs on camera. Lawmakers in DC are debating federal protection for IVF. Hundreds of millions of dollars are being invested in slick startups that market fertility treatments for all. But this rapid growth has revealed cracks in the system. Misconception, a new series from Bloomberg’s Prognosis, follows reporter Kristen V. Brown on her own intimate journey as she uncovers the business of fertility. Along the way, she finds a fractured industry — a profit-driven field of medicine that thrives on dueling messages of hope and fear as people gamble everything for a chance at a baby. Grok-Generated Chaos, Cybertruck In Strange Places

Last week, X users might have noticed a new kind of artificial intelligence-generated image proliferating: strange visions of Elon Musk next to Disney characters carrying guns, or Donald Trump in all kinds of, well, weird situations. This was what followed a new release of Musk’s Grok AI tool, which can now make images—unsurprisingly with fewer guardrails than other image-creating machines out there. On this episode we’ll talk about Grok’s new skillset and also get into the semiotics of the Cybertruck. Initially conceived of as a mass-market truck, it’s slid into another category: marker of a certain kind of right-wing flex, the kind Musk himself has engaged in on his struggling social network. Joining David to discuss is Davey Alba, a Bloomberg technology reporter, along with Max Chafkin and Dana Hull. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Musk-Trump Conversation, Musk in China

Monday night, Donald Trump sat down for an interview with Elon Musk on Musk’s social media platform, X. An unfiltered conversation between two of the most influential figures of the last decade? It was no surprise that over one million people listened concurrently in as they meandered across topics ranging from electric vehicles and immigration, to a play-by-play of the assassination attempt Trump survived in Pennsylvania last month. So what’s the significance of this interview, which produced very little news and was marred from the start by technical issues? On the latest episode of Elon, Inc., host David gathers Max and Dana to try and untangle it.But wait there’s more. In the final installment of our summer conversation series, Papadopoulos speaks with Bethany Allen, head of program for China investigations and analysis at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. Allen unpacks Musk’s business ventures in China and what his involvement with the country means for Tesla and the electric vehicle industry at large. AI Gets Frothy and Elon's Impact on Texas

As the world reacts to US Vice President Kamala Harris’s own vice-presidential pick, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, our attention stays focused on Monday’s stock market selloff (though much was recovered on Tuesday). One of the big topics of conversation was, does the sudden dip represent a popping artificial intelligence bubble? And what would such a correction do to Elon Musk? On this week’s episode of Elon, Inc., Bloomberg Businessweek’s Max Chafkin, Bloomberg technology editor Sarah Frier and reporter Kurt Wagner discuss. Plus later on: a conversation between Chafkin and the New Yorker’s Rachel Monroe and journalist Chris Hooks on what Musk’s relocation to Texas has meant for the state. Elon Musk Goes on Politics Posting Rampage and Why He Left California

Presidential political news—and memes—continue to electrify the American public. And it seems they’ve had an effect on Elon Musk as well, seeing how the far-right GOP megadonor has been posting madly on his embattled social media platform. Among media shared by Musk—now a full-throated supporter of Donald Trump—has been a fake video of US Vice President Kamala Harris with the parody label removed. Bloomberg technology editor Sarah Frier and reporter Kurt Wagner join Elon, Inc., to talk about this. Later on the episode, Elon Musk reporter Dana Hull interviews New York Times reporter Mike Isaac about Musk’s troubled relationship with California. Biden Drops out, Musk Tweets for Trump, and Elon Loses a Superfan

When President Joe Biden announced that he was dropping his campaign for re-election, the news reached most people via the President's post to X. Some are calling that a win for Musk's beleaguered platform, but Musk himself seemed to be preoccupied with propping up former President Trump's campaign on X, a platform Trump himself won't even use. Ratings & reviews, great topics, but too much bias.

I like the idea of a single podcast the covers everything related to Elon Musk’s businesses. I listen to the podcast because it’s a great way to keep up with what’s been happening within these areas; however, the show is generally biased against Musk and especially against X and Tesla. Please be aware of your bias and try harder to be objective. I will update my review if I see a change in the direction of more objective and thorough journalism.

Thinking Critically

Most recent episode on Cybertruck Is the hosts are suggesting lack of sales, and for the reasons they are pointing out is all over the place. Is it a demand issue? Or is it a production issue? Is it not selling because it is to expensive? Does that mean if the foundation series ends ($20k cheaper) does that mean it will sell better? It seems to me the hosts are throwing everything at Elon and Tesla “just” to make it negative I thought journalism should try to be objective and try to look at both sides, host are accusing X but in my view they themselves are more extreme (in X you can always post an counter argument)

Good, engaging analysis

Really appreciate the analysis that supplements the reporting on Musk that's available elsewhere.

I enjoy hearing all the updates and insights that regard Elon Musk. He’s becoming such a polarised individual, but either way, he’s very influential to the world. Keep up the great work!

Elon Musk claims advertisers are trying to ‘blackmail’ him, says ‘Go f--- yourself’

Speaking at the 2023 DealBook Summit in New York on Wednesday, Elon Musk, the owner of social media site X (formerly Twitter), scoffed at advertisers leaving the platform because of antisemitic posts he amplified there.

“If somebody’s gonna try to blackmail me with advertising? Blackmail me with money? Go f---yourself. Go. F---. Yourself. Is that clear?” Musk singled out  Disney  CEO Bob Iger in the audience, saying “Hi Bob!”

He also implied that his fans would boycott those advertisers in kind. “The whole world will know that those advertisers killed the company and we will document it in great detail,” Musk threatened.

He also told interviewer Andrew Ross Sorkin, “I have no problem being hated. Hate away.”

Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of X, defended Musk’s comments in a post on the platform late Wednesday.

“X is enabling an information independence that’s uncomfortable for some people. We’re a platform that allows people to make their own decisions,” said Yaccarino, who was previously a senior executive at NBC Universal.

In recent weeks, Musk has promoted and sometimes verbally endorsed what the  White House called  “antisemitic and racist hate” on X, formerly Twitter, the social media platform he owns and runs as CTO.

He called those tweets, “one of the most foolish if not the most foolish thing I’ve ever done on the platform.” “I’m sorry for that tweet or post,” he added.

Musk’s inflammatory posts on the social media platform, among other things, have led large advertisers, including Disney,  Apple , and many others, to suspend campaigns there and drove some famous users to abandon the platform, including Paris Mayor  Anne Hidalgo .

Musk, who is also the CEO of  Tesla  and SpaceX, has denied that he is antisemitic, and said that on X, “Clear calls for extreme violence are against our terms of service and will result in suspension.”

He also traveled to Israel this week, where he met and spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. When Netanyahu said he wanted to “deradicalize” and “rebuild” Gaza, Musk offered to help. Musk told Sorkin on stage that his visit to Israel was planned before his tweets, and were not part of an “apology tour.”

Previously, Musk had said he wanted to bring SpaceX satellite communications service, Starlink, to the region and specifically to humanitarian organizations in Gaza.

Musk’s personal account on X currently displays a follower count of more than 164 million — though tech blog Mashable  reported in August  that a majority of Musk’s listed followers appeared to be inauthentic or inactive accounts.

Unions, China, and OpenAI

Earlier on Wednesday, the  UAW launched campaigns aimed at Tesla and 12 other automakers  in the U.S. Sorkin asked Musk what that means for his EV business.

Musk espoused generally negative views about unions and said they create a “lords and peasants” atmosphere at companies, and “naturally try to create negativity,” pitting workers against management.

He said, “Many people at Tesla have come up, gone from working on the line to being in senior management and there’s no lords and peasants — everyone eats at the same table.”

He added, “If Tesla gets unionized, it will be because we deserve it and we failed in some way.”

The New York Times Hosts Its Annual DealBook Summit

At one point, Sorkin asked, “Do you feel like anybody has leverage over you?”

Musk replied, “If we make bad products that people don’t want to use, the users will vote with their resources and use something else.” He also said that his companies are overseen by regulators. “SpaceX, Starlink, Tesla — are overseen by cumulatively by
a few hundred regulators because we’re in 55 countries,” Musk said.

Later, Musk said that he complies with nearly all the regulations levied upon his companies, but “once in awhile” he disagrees with a regulation and would object to it and disobey. “I’m incredibly rule-following,” he claimed.

Sorkin asked, “How do you think about the leverage that the Chinese have over you?” alluding to Tesla’s factory there and the company’s reliance on Chinese consumers for a significant portion of sales. Sorkin added, “Is it hypocritical for you to be doing business in China, or other countries, as it relates to X and other things that don’t follow this free speech path that you have espoused?”

The CEO replied, “The best that the platform can do is adhere to the laws of any given country. Do you think there’s something more we can do than that?”

On OpenAI and its recent boardroom struggles, Musk said he had talked to a lot of people but had not found out what precisely led to the recent firing and then re-hiring of CEO Sam Altman. He also said he has “mixed feelings” about Altman personally, hinting that he feels like the OpenAI CEO has too much power. “The ring of power can corrupt.”

When it was founded, OpenAI’s original board included both Altman and Musk, but Musk  left in 2018  after poaching a star engineer from the company to run Autopilot software engineering at Tesla.

Musk also said that he’s worried about the danger of AI harming humanity, and that he was “having trouble sleeping at night” because of it.

Elon Musk Takes On Apple’s Power, Setting Up a Clash

In a series of tweets on Monday, Mr. Musk accused Apple of threatening to pull Twitter from its App Store and of trying to censor.

By Kate Conger and Tripp Mickle

SAN FRANCISCO — “What’s going on here @tim_cook?” Elon Musk tweeted on Monday to Tim Cook, the chief executive of Apple, igniting a spat between the world’s richest man and the world’s most valuable public company.

In a series of tweets over 15 minutes, Mr. Musk, the new owner of Twitter, accused Apple of threatening to withhold Twitter from its App Store, a move that would limit some new users from downloading the app. The action would amount to censorship, Mr. Musk said, with no explanation from Apple for why Twitter would be blocked. He added that Apple had also reduced its advertising spending on Twitter.

Apple has mostly stopped advertising on Twitter. Do they hate free speech in America? — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 28, 2022

With his tweets, Mr. Musk set the stage for a power struggle with Mr. Cook, who holds immense influence over other tech companies through Apple’s dominance. Mr. Musk has a vested interest now in Apple’s clout because of his ownership of Twitter, which he bought last month for $44 billion . Twitter is distributed through Apple’s App Store and is used by iPhone and iPad owners around the world. In one tweet, Mr. Musk implied he was ready for “war” with Apple.

Mr. Musk has been poised to confront Apple since taking over Twitter. His business plan is predicated on shifting its revenue from a dependence on advertising to a greater reliance on subscription sales. But any new subscription revenue will be subject to Apple’s practice of taking as much as a 30 percent cut.

Mr. Musk’s complaints also come at a pivotal time for Apple. There’s a push in Congress during the final months of the year to advance a series of antitrust laws. Among the bills under consideration is the Open App Markets Act, which seeks to give developers more control over their apps and allow them to skirt the fees that Apple and Google charge.

“Elon is the latest chapter in a push to make App Store fees lower, and this will resurrect a topic that’s been fairly quiet over the past six months,” said Gene Munster, managing partner of Loup Ventures, a technology research firm. He said he anticipated a future in which App Store fees were reduced to around 20 percent.

Mr. Musk and a spokesman for Apple did not respond to requests for comment.

Apple has increasingly faced a backlash from app developers, as well as pressure from regulators and politicians around the world, over its App Store policies. The App Store has become a prime gateway where billions of iPhone users download Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, games and all sorts of other programs, making it an arbiter of software distribution.

Apple uses the fees that it collects from its App Store, which was created in 2008, to pay a staff of several hundred people who review each app that it distributes. The company has said its app reviewers protect customers’ privacy and security, as well as prevent them from being subjected to fraud.

Among the things that the reviewers vet is the use of Apple’s in-app payment system, which has helped the company collect an estimated $22 billion in fees annually from developers, according to Sensor Tower, a market research firm.

In 2019, Epic, the maker of the Fortnite video game, sued Apple for anticompetitive behavior with its App Store. Last year, the judge in the case ruled largely in favor of Apple, finding that the company did protect the privacy and security of customers. But the judge also issued a ruling that would require Apple to allow developers to link customers to their own payment systems. Both Epic and Apple are appealing the case.

On Monday, Tim Sweeney, Epic’s chief executive officer, lent his support to Mr. Musk on Twitter. Mr. Sweeney pointed out that Apple had kicked Epic out of the App Store when it similarly defied the tech giant’s policies. He questioned if Apple would boot every developer that complained about it, a list that now includes Meta’s Facebook, Spotify and Twitter.

“Apple blocked Fortnite within a few hours of Epic defying their policy,” Mr. Sweeney tweeted. “Would they nuke Twitter? Spotify? Facebook? Netflix? At what point does the whole rotten structure collapse?”

Apple has rankled app developers for other reasons. Last year, it made a series of tech changes to enhance people’s privacy on mobile apps. Those shifts made it harder for many apps to target mobile advertising to users, leading tech executives including Mark Zuckerberg , the chief executive of Meta, which owns Instagram as well as Facebook, to speak out.

Apple has also required companies to create a “safe experience” for their apps to be listed in its App Store. After the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol last year, Apple blocked the “free speech” social network Parler from appearing in its App Store until the service introduced guardrails to prevent calls for violence on the service.

“In my time at Twitter, representatives of the app stores regularly raised concerns about content available on our platform,” Yoel Roth, Twitter’s former head of trust and safety, wrote in an editorial in The New York Times this month. Mr. Roth said App Store reviewers had raised concerns about pornography and racial slurs on Twitter.

Mr. Musk’s purchase of Twitter has upended the relative harmony between it and Apple. As an outspoken user of the platform, with nearly 120 million followers, Mr. Musk has often used Twitter to needle business rivals like Bill Gates or Sam Bankman-Fried. His spat with Mr. Cook could become “a revolution against online censorship in America,” Mr. Musk tweeted on Monday.

Last week, Mr. Musk also mused about building his own phone if Apple and Google booted Twitter from their app stores. “I certainly hope it does not come to that, but, yes, if there is no other choice, I will make an alternative phone,” he tweeted .

Apple has urged Mr. Musk to preserve the status quo. In an interview with “CBS Mornings” this month, Mr. Cook was asked whether there was a risk that Twitter could be removed from the App Store. He said Twitter would continue to be distributed and praised its commitment to moderate abusive content.

“I don’t think anyone wants hate speech on their platform, so I’m counting on them to continue to do that,” Mr. Cook said.

Phil Schiller, a longtime Apple executive who helps oversee its App Store, recently deleted his Twitter account when Mr. Musk reinstated former President Donald J. Trump to the platform. Mr. Cook continues to use Twitter and used it last week to wish his followers a happy Thanksgiving.

Mr. Musk’s attacks on Apple’s leadership could create challenges for the tech giant “in Congress, where Big Tech is still a target,” Mr. Munster of Loup Ventures said. Republicans in Congress have embraced Mr. Musk’s purchase of Twitter because he has promised to restore free speech, an issue that they speak about often. Mr. Musk resonates with that group, which is ascendant in Washington, Mr. Munster said.

In September, Mr. Cook met with Republican congressional leaders, including Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, and discussed the importance of free speech online, two people familiar with those conversations said. Because Apple doesn’t have social media platforms, it has so far largely avoided being dragged into that debate.

Apple's partnership with OpenAI will enable some functionality of ChatGPT on the iPhone.

Elon Musk , who threatened to ban his employees and visitors from using Apple devices at the companies he runs, said in a June 10 post on X that he's no longer a fan of the iPhone , the  iPad and Mac computers because he has security concerns about whether Apple's new partnership with OpenAI , the maker of ChatGPT , will protect users' personal data.

But the situation prompting Musk -- who is one of the world's richest men, the CEO of X, the head of a startup developing a rival to ChatGPT called Grok and a co-founder of OpenAI, a company he was suing until just now -- may be more complicated than just worries about security. Musk, who has a  reputation for bluster , is now being  called out by members of his social media fact-checking community , saying his claims are inaccurate and misleading.

AI Atlas art badge tag

And at least one security researcher said that Musk's security warning seems wrong, based on information Apple and OpenAI have shared so far about how privacy between their companies is being handled.

Here's what happened: On Monday, Apple CEO Tim Cook and his team took the stage at the company's developers' conference  and announced generative AI features they're bringing to iPhone, iPad and Mac users in the next versions of Apple's operating system software this fall. The news included a deal to give Apple users access to OpenAI's popular ChatGPT gen AI chatbot. Then Musk made his threat.

an X post from Elon Musk reading,

Elon Musk posted about Apple's new AI features shortly after the WWDC event.

"If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies." Musk  posted to X , formerly known as Twitter, on Monday. "That is an unacceptable security violation."

He also said in his tweets that visitors to his companies , which include Tesla, X, chatbot maker xAI, tunneling startup the Boring Company and rocket producer SpaceX, will have to "check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage." Faraday cages are enclosures that shield anything placed inside them from electromagnetic fields.

What he didn't offer was any evidence to back up his speculation about potential security risks. Instead, Musk, in a followup post on Monday, belittled Apple for inking a deal with an outside maker of a large language model (LLM), which is what enables gen AI functionality. He also said he might make his own phone to "combat this," again without detailing what "this" is.

"It's patently absurd that Apple isn't smart enough to make their own AI, yet is somehow capable of ensuring that OpenAI will protect your security & privacy," Musk wrote. "Apple has no clue what's actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They're selling you down the river."

Elon Musk vs. OpenAI

Musk, who has worked to portray himself as an advocate for users and humanity, also didn't mention his legal beef with OpenAI, which is detailed in his February lawsuit . In that lawsuit, he claimed that the San Francisco-based startup, led by CEO Sam Altman, abandoned its founding mission to develop AI that will benefit humanity and instead has focused on chasing profit.

In response, OpenAI challenged Musk's narrative in a lengthy  blog post on its site on March 5 , saying the billionaire investor was angry that his 2018 attempt to take over OpenAI was rebuffed. It included Musk's demand to become the CEO and majority shareholder so he could turn it into a "for-profit entity" himself.

OpenAI's post also referenced a few of Musk's emails that seemed to support the company's claim that Musk was aware that OpenAI would need to become a for-profit company if it wanted to raise money to chase its dreams of building an artificial general intelligence (AGI), an AI that matches or surpasses human intelligence. In 2017, Musk said in an email that OpenAI would need to raise at least $1 billion in funding.

Musk withdrew his lawsuit Tuesday, "a day before a state judge in San Francisco was set to consider whether it should be dismissed," The New York Times reported , adding that he could refile the suit in another state. Musk's lawyers didn't give a reason for their request to drop the lawsuit in their filing, according to CNN .

OpenAI declined to comment on Musk's comments about the Apple partnership or about his decision to drop his lawsuit.

Apple's new AI push

For its part, Apple didn't reply to CNET's request for comment about how ChatGPT will be integrated into "Apple Intelligence," the name it gave to its approach to adding generative AI-based features throughout its hardware and software. Those features include the ability to rewrite or summarize notes as well as Siri's improved capability to understand the context of conversations.

In describing its deal with OpenAI, Apple said its users would be able to choose to access ChatGPT through Siri, Apple's virtual assistant, and in new Writing Tools that will proofread your writing, rewrite copy in various styles and quickly summarize long sections of text.

Apple also said Monday it intends "to add support for other AI models in the future" -- a veiled reference to ChatGPT rivals.

During the WWDC keynote , Apple talked at length about the security and privacy aspects of its AI systems , including what it calls Private Cloud Compute for managing communications between personal devices and Apple's remote servers working in the cloud. The iPhone maker has championed privacy as a core value when designing products and services, and it said that Apple Intelligence would set " a new standard for privacy in AI ."

To help achieve this, Apple said certain AI-related tasks will be processed on-device, while more complex requests will be routed to the cloud in data centers running Apple-made chips. In either case, "data is not stored or made accessible to Apple and is only used to fulfill the user's requests, and independent experts can verify this privacy," the company said.

"Privacy protections are built in for users who access ChatGPT -- their IP addresses are obscured, and OpenAI won't store requests,"  Apple said  in a press release.

The iPhone maker said to expect the ChatGPT integration in new software for its iPhone, iPad and Mac computers this fall (when it typically releases a new model of the iPhone). The integration with ChatGPT is an optional feature, the company said, demonstrating that users can choose to opt in or use OpenAI's chatbot on its website. Apple said its devices would not collect personal data, but would be aware of it.

Grok logo

Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, is making progress on turning its Grok chatbot into one with multimodal capabilities, according to  public developer documents .

AI at the OS level?

Because access to ChatGPT is an optional feature that users need to opt into, it doesn't seem that Apple is in fact integrating OpenAI at the operating system level as Musk claims, according to  Matthew Green , an associate professor of computer science who teaches cryptography at Johns Hopkins University.

"They're saying you have to explicitly do this and opt into it and an activate it," Green said, citing the information provided so far by Apple and OpenAI. "It sounds like, first of all, no they're not embedding anything at the operating system level. They're not making it any kind of default. They're building in some optional feature in Siri that you explicitly have to turn on that would let you use ChatGPT. It sounds pretty much not like what Elon Musk is describing."

That said, Green said he and others will be watching for more details as the two companies share more details and move closer to Apple releasing its software.

a reply on X from Elon Musk to Tim Cook's announcement of Apple Intelligence, reading,

Elon Musk has referred to Apple Intelligence as "creepy" in multiple posts on X.

Fact-checkers on X also pointed out that Musk's posts labeling the Apple-OpenAI partnership as "creepy spyware" were not factually correct, Forbes noted . "Users, citing Apple's own  introduction  to the Apple Intelligence models, said Musk's claim the company will hand data over to OpenAI is misleading as Apple has developed its own AI systems that will run on-device, or locally, and will use private cloud computing."

In another community note, Forbes reported, fact-checkers wrote that Musk "misrepresents what was actually announced," as "Apple Intelligence is Apple's own creation" and access to ChatGPT "is entirely separate, and controlled by the user."

YouTube has introduced enhanced safety measures aimed at improving the experience for young users, particularly minors. On Thursday, the platform revealed a significant change in its recommendation system, which will now limit the promotion of videos focusing on body image, fitness routines, and physical attributes for teenagers. The platform explained that the decision was heavily influenced by suggestions from a dedicated advisory committee. The insights highlighted that teens are especially vulnerable to developing negative self-perceptions when exposed to certain types of content, leading YouTube to impose these new restrictions.

In a recent blog post, YouTube elaborated on the specific types of content that will no longer be shown to teen users in its video suggestions. These include videos that promote comparisons between physical traits, glorify specific body types or fitness standards, and content that promotes social aggression, such as bullying or intimidation. This global update is set to affect teenage users across all regions, with YouTube aiming to foster a healthier online environment.

Gemini Live starts rolling out to more users:

Google is expanding the availability of its Gemini Live feature, enhancing its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot with two-way voice conversation capabilities. The Gemini Live enables users to engage in natural, flowing conversations with the AI, eliminating the need for typed prompts or on-screen responses. This advanced feature, however, remains exclusive to those subscribed to Gemini Advanced.

Google officially started rolling out Gemini Live to a broader audience, according to the release notes.

Previously, this functionality was tested among a limited group of Gemini Advanced subscribers, but it is now being extended to a wider user base.

Apple reportedly looking to transition to OLED displays by 2025:

California-based tech giant Apple is poised to fully transition its iPhone lineup to organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays by 2025, marking a significant shift from its reliance on liquid crystal displays (LCDs), reported Japan's Nikkei newspaper.

According to a report from Nikkei newspaper, which cites anonymous sources, Apple’s complete migration to OLED screens will have notable implications for its current suppliers. Notably, Japanese firms Sharp Corp and Japan Display, who have been key providers of LCD screens for Apple's devices, are expected to be phased out of the company's supply chain for its handsets. The report indicates that these companies will no longer play a role in the production of displays for Apple's iPhones, as they do not engage in the mass production of OLED screens for smartphones.

In preparation for this shift, Apple has reportedly started placing orders for OLED panels for its forthcoming iPhone SE 4 model, added the report. These orders have been placed with China's BOE Technology and South Korea's LG Display, signaling a broader diversification of its supplier base for display technology.

“This is bullsh*t” —

Elon musk is livid about new openai/apple deal, elon musk attacks apple/chatgpt integration as “creepy spyware.”.

Ashley Belanger - Jun 11, 2024 8:50 pm UTC

Elon Musk is livid about new OpenAI/Apple deal

Elon Musk is so opposed to Apple's plan to integrate OpenAI's ChatGPT with device operating systems that he's seemingly spreading misconceptions while heavily criticizing the partnership.

Further Reading

On X (formerly Twitter), Musk has been criticizing alleged privacy and security risks since the plan was announced Monday at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference.

"If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies," Musk posted on X. "That is an unacceptable security violation." In another post responding to Apple CEO Tim Cook, Musk wrote , "Don't want it. Either stop this creepy spyware or all Apple devices will be banned from the premises of my companies."

Musk also posted a meme suggesting that Apple planned to share user data with OpenAI. Another post of his temporarily received a fact-checking community note after suggesting that Apple hastily and cluelessly formed the partnership without regard for user privacy and security.

"It’s patently absurd that Apple isn’t smart enough to make their own AI, yet is somehow capable of ensuring that OpenAI will protect your security & privacy!" Musk wrote. "Apple has no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They’re selling you down the river."

The community note, which has since been removed, added some context, contradicting Musk by clarifying that Apple has developed its own AI models and will only use ChatGPT when users "elect to." But while that note has now disappeared (although it lives on in screenshots), X users have continued criticizing Musk's posts as misleading or otherwise sought to clarify how the ChatGPT integration works.

Oh my god pic.twitter.com/5FLmwpKtEK — evan loves worf (@esjesjesj) June 11, 2024

Essentially, Musk alleged that OpenAI will have device-level access to Apple user data that users may not be able to opt out of, and the ChatGPT integration will behave like spyware by allowing OpenAI to collect and share data with third parties without user consent.

However, Musk's characterization of the partnership does not match what Apple shared at the conference. A chief technology officer at a private equity firm, Sam Pullara, posted on X that "data for a specific request is only sent to OpenAI" when the user "approves it on a per request basis," with Apple providing "no access to the device."

"That is no different than using the ChatGPT app today," Pullara wrote.

Pullara's clarification did not seem to impress Musk much.

"Then leave it as an app," Musk replied . "This is bullshit."

According to joint statements from OpenAI and Apple , the integration of ChatGPT allows "users to access ChatGPT’s capabilities—including image and document understanding—without needing to jump between tools." This apparently works through API requests that Apple and OpenAI said "are not stored by OpenAI." The integration is also solely available through opting in, meaning users can choose to use ChatGPT if they want to. Even asking Siri a question will prompt a disclosure to the user "before any questions are sent to ChatGPT," the companies said.

  • Trump says he will appoint Elon Musk to lead government efficiency commission

Former President Donald Trump Holds A Press Conference In New York

Michael M. Santiago/Getty Images News

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said on Thursday he would appoint billionaire Elon Musk to head a government efficiency commission if he wins the U.S. presidential election, in a wide-ranging speech where he unveiled several economic proposals.

In a speech at the Economic Club of New York, the former president also proposed to cut corporate tax rates for companies that manufacture domestically, start a new sovereign wealth fund, and create "low-tax" zones on federal lands to encourage the construction of new homes.

According to a Reuters report , Trump had been discussing the idea of an efficiency commission with his aides for weeks. His Thursday speech was his first public endorsement of the idea.

Trump said that the commission would be "tasked with conducting a complete financial and performance audit of the entire federal government and making recommendations for drastic reforms."

It was also the first time Trump said Musk would head such a body. The billionaire chief of Tesla ( NASDAQ: TSLA ) and SpaceX ( SPACE ) said in a post on X that he looked "forward to serving America if the opportunity arises."

Musk has emerged as one of Trump's most vocal and prominent supporters this election cycle. He first publicly endorsed Trump on July 13, after the assassination attempt on the Republican's candidate's life in Pennsylvania. He has also pledged millions of dollars to a super political action committee that is behind Trump.

On Wednesday, Musk posted a picture on X quoting himself saying that "a Trump victory is essential."

Last month, Trump told Reuters that if he's elected, he plans to impose new tariffs on imports of vehicles produced in Mexico by the Detroit Three and others., and would block Chinese automakers from building new plants in Mexico to manufacture cars for the U.S. market.

Corporate Tax Cuts, Housing Plans, Sovereign Wealth Fund

During his speech, Trump also emphasized his plans to slash the corporate tax rate to 15% from 21%, but only for firms that manufacture domestically. He added that he would open federal land to create new housing zones that would be "low-tax" and "low-regulation" to reduce housing costs.

In contrast, Democratic nominee Kamala Harris has proposed giving prospective homebuyers up to $25,000 as part of her economic agenda.

Vice President Harris has proposed to set the capital gains tax at 28% , up from its current level, but lower than President Joe Biden's proposal of 39.6%.

Trump also suggested the creation of a sovereign wealth fund, partly to fund infrastructure projects. He said that he would rescind unspent funds related to the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, a key legislative accomplishment for President Joe Biden.

Top Biden aides have been working on a similar proposal to establish a sovereign wealth fund that would enable the U.S. to invest in national security interests including technology, energy, and critical links in the supply chain, Bloomberg reported Friday.
