Explore Jaipur city and its best places to visit

The city of palaces and forts, interspersed with historical monuments and gardens that testify the grandeur of the Rajput kings, Jaipur is the gateway to the royal heritage of India. Also called Pink City, the capital of Rajasthan, remains suspended in time, with its heritage preserved in the overwhelming Hawa Mahal that gazes down at the bustling streets of Johari Bazaar.

A little away from the city centre, which is resplendent with state-of-the-art cinemas/ movie theatres, eateries, multiplexes, museums and parks, lies the arid hilly country dotted with forts that earlier stood as armoured sentinels of Jaipur. The biggest and the most awe-inspiring is the Amber Fort, which leaves one humbled with its expansive fortifications and grandeur.

Founded by Maharaja Jai Singh II in 1727 AD, Jaipur was the stronghold of the Rajputs, who gave it its everlasting legacy in the form of various heritage sites, arts and crafts, culinary curations etc. Typical Rajasthani cuisine, comprising lal maas, dal-bati-churma, ker sangri and other uncountable recipes, all hold limelight in the culinary culture of India. These can be enjoyed in the quintessential Rajasthani style of sitting cross-legged on mats on the floor and digging in in the sumptuous thali, which features up to 20 dishes.

While one can enjoy the various offerings of the city as an outsider, what really sets Jaipur apart is its welcoming spirit that wins you over with its warmth. To symbolise this hospitable culture, the older part of the city was painted pink under the reign of Maharaja Ram Singh in 1876. Although this was done during the British rule when the Prince of Wales came to visit India, many houses are still adorned with the hue to reiterate their signature slogan of 'Padharo Mhare Desh' (Welcome to my Land).

Jaipur was designed by architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya in the early 18th century. Through the years it has transformed into a bustling metropolis while continuing to retain its old-world charm. Following India's independence from British rule, Jaipur and the principalities of Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur came together to form the present state of Rajasthan. Today, thousands of travellers from the world over come to explore its vibrant streets every year, sampling its delicious food and experiencing its rich cultural flavours. They find at every turn a charming confluence of tradition and modernity, old shops rubbing shoulders with new malls without ever detracting from the city's essence.

A kaleidoscope of many moods and hues, Jaipur is also a fantastic shopping destination. From colourful puppets and bandhni sarees to silver jewellery and lac bangles, it offers a host of knick-knacks and souvenirs to take home along with many fond memories!

India's 'Pink City' Is a Feast for the Senses — Here Are the Best Things to Do in Jaipur

Historic palaces, delicious treats, and gorgeous textiles await in Jaipur.

benedek/Getty Images

Steeped in history and tradition, Jaipur, India’s Pink City, is a stunning UNESCO World Heritage site with centuries-old palaces and imposing fortresses where architecture and artistry combine for breathtaking results. Learn how gems are polished and cut at legendary jewelers. Be captivated as skilled artisans print motifs across fabrics using carved blocks. Fall in love with the immense beauty and bustle of Rajasthan’s capital and the wilderness beyond.

To help you get the most out of your visit, we asked Ashish Balodhi, a manager at the 71-room Oberoi Rajvilas ; William Mulford, cultural director at Bar Palladio and nine-room hotel Villa Palladio Jaipur ; and Chinar Farooqui, founder of heirloom fabric clothing brand Injiri, for the ultimate list of things to do in Jaipur.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds, is the honeycomb-like red sandstone structure for which Jaipur is best known.
  • The four big gates at the royal residence City Palace are wonderfully colorful and ornate, making for the perfect backdrop.
  • The Anokhi Museum showcases the art of hand block printing, with demonstrations throughout the day.
  • The annual Jaipur Literature Festival is one of the world's largest, five days packed with talks by a global cast of authors.
  • Cool off with a drink at the striking and photogenic all-blue Bar Palladio.

See the Hawa Mahal by day and night.

Translating to Palace of the Winds, this honeycomb-like red sandstone structure is what Jaipur is best known for. "By day, it invites you to explore its intricate interiors," says Balodhi. "But by night, the colorful mirrored windows come alive. To truly appreciate this transformation, visit after 9 p.m. when the bustling streets have settled down."

Take in 18th century opulence at the City Palace.

Spread across a series of courtyards, the City Palace was and still is the royal residence of the last ruling family. Four ornate doorways representing the seasons — Green Gate (spring), Lotus Gate (summer), Peacock Gate (autumn), and Rose Gate (winter) — are among the many highlights here. "I am particularly drawn to the antique textiles, traditional Rajasthani clothing, and craftsmanship showcased within the palace," notes Farooqui.

This museum showcases the art of hand block printing, highlighting the history and techniques with block carving and printing demonstrations throughout the day. There’s also an on-site shop selling tunics, bed linens, paper goods, and more.

Attend the annual Jaipur Literature Festival.

If you're in Jaipur during January or February, it's worth it to stop by. "It’s one of the world’s largest literary gatherings , featuring renowned authors and discussions on various topics," says Farooqui.

Sip classic cocktails at striking Bar Palladio.

Within the Narain Niwas Palace hotel, the blue-hued Bar Palladio is a visual treat, an ode to the city’s peacocks perhaps. "Order the Jungle Fever, made with tequila, chili, cilantro, and lime," recommends Mulford.

Visit the 19 astronomical instruments at Jantar Mantar.

ferrantraite/Getty Images

An open-air observatory dating back to 1728, Jantar Mantar is a testimony to Rajput king (and founder of Jaipur) Sawai Jai Singh’s interest in and knowledge of astronomy. "There’s actually a secret passage that runs just behind Jantar Mantar, but that’s our little secret," says Mulford.

Let your jaw drop at Patrika Gate.

 Prashanth Vishwanthan/Bloomberg via Getty Images

Intricately painted with beautiful frescoes in every color, this more recently built gateway pays homage to the seven original gates that were used to access the walled city of Jaipur. "It’s fantastic for photographs," says Mulford.

Join evening prayers at Govind Dev Ji temple.

mathess/Getty Images

"The Govind Dev Ji temple is an oasis of spirituality," says Balodhi. "Partake in blessing ceremonies led by priests and experience the evening worship accompanied by hymns." The evening prayers, or artis , start at 5:45pm, 6:45pm, and 9pm (30 minutes earlier in winter).

Book a table at The Johri hotel's restaurant and bar.

Elegant interiors and locally sourced ingredients have made this hidden gem a must. "I really appreciate the restaurant’s commitment to using locally sourced and seasonal ingredients," shares Farooqui.

Indulge your sweet tooth at Pandit Kulfi.

Dating back to 1965, Pandit Kulfi is a legendary establishment for its Indian-style ice cream known as kulfi , a dense, creamy, often nut-studded confection that involves simmering milk for hours and hours. "Try their kesar kulfi , infused with saffron, or the rabdi kulfi ," suggests Balodhi.

Nurse a nightcap at the Taj Rambagh Palace’s Polo Bar.

Magical by night, with lights festooned along the building’s sculpted archways, the 78-room Taj Rambagh Palace was originally built as a hunting lodge and is a sight to behold. The hotel's Polo Bar is a cool, tranquil place to enjoy a cocktail.

Taste traditional sweets at LMB.

Sample all manner of savory snacks and confections at centuries-old Laxmi Misthan Bhandar (LMB), including ghewar , a disc-shaped Rajasthani sweet made from flour, clarified butter, and sugar.

Shop till you drop at Jaipur’s many textile boutiques.

Tuul & Bruno Morandi/Getty Images

" Rasa  stands out as an oasis for those seeking contemporary and sophisticated block-printed soft furnishings," says Balodhi. "Each piece reflects a fusion of tradition and modernity, making it a prime choice for home linens. While Rasa shines brightly, consider other notable options like Soma and Anokhi , too."

Dig through all the wares at the bazaars.

Walter Bibikow/Getty Images

Exploring Johri Bazar, Tripolia Bazar, and Chameli Market gives visitors a sense of daily life as they watch locals who specialize in silver, gems, leather shoes, pottery, and more.

Admire baubles at The Gem Palace and Amrapali.

Simon de Trey-White/WireImage

Dazzling gemstone necklaces, earrings, and bracelets from these legendary houses make the ultimate souvenir. Amrapali’s collection of tribal-inspired and traditional pieces is unrivaled, while The Gem Palace excels at artistic and more contemporary creations, notes Farooqui.

Visit one of Jaipur’s grand forts.

Mukul Banerjee Photography/Getty Images

"Perched on a hill, Amber Fort is stunning in the soft morning light," says Farooqui. "Visiting at sunrise allows you witness the fort bathed in gentle rays of the rising sun.” By contrast, consider a visit to Nahargarh Fort at sunset.

Ride in a rickshaw and try local street snacks.

FG Trade/Getty Images

"There are several stalls in the C-Scheme area along Vaniki Path that specialize in chilla, or sprouted moong dal pancakes, drizzled with tamarind and cilantro chutneys and served with yogurt," says Mulford. "They are super yummy and quite healthy."

Take to the skies in a hot air balloon.

robru/Getty Images

"Ballooning over Jaipur with SkyWaltz Balloon is an awe-inspiring experience," says Balodhi. "Take in the expansive Aravalli hills and majestic Amber Fort during your 60-minute flight."

Spot wildlife on a wilderness safari.

Sourabh Bharti/Getty Images

Spread across eight square miles, the Jhalana Leopard Safari Park makes a wonderful half-day adventure. Visitors can keep their eyes peeled for leopards, Indian foxes, hyenas, spotted deer, and migratory birds.

16 Top-Rated Attractions & Places to Visit in Jaipur

Written by Joni Sweet Updated Mar 24, 2023

No trip to India is complete without spending time in Jaipur. Affectionately nicknamed "The Pink City" for the blushing color of its historic buildings, Jaipur is a princely wonderland of culture and heritage.

The best places to visit in Jaipur showcase the royalty of Rajasthan — and you don't have to walk far to see many of the top attractions. Start by touring City Palace , a nearly 300-year-old palace with special courtyards, structures, gardens, and temples.

Just next door is Jantar Mantar, a centuries-old attraction with giant astronomical instruments commissioned by the founder of the city. A 10-minute walk from here brings you to Hawa Mahal , a red-and-pink sandstone structure. Its distinctive lattice design allowed royal women to get a peek at public life while remaining unseen in the 19th century.

Ready to make your trip to "The Paris of India" a memorable experience? Map out your itinerary with our guide to the top attractions and places to visit in Jaipur.

City Palace

Jantar mantar, albert hall museum, birla mandir, nahargarh fort, amrapali museum, museum of legacies, jaigarh fort, panna meena ka kund, akshardham temple, map of attractions & places to visit in jaipur, jaipur, india - climate chart.

City Palace in Jaipur

City Palace has stood at the heart of the Old City of Jaipur for nearly three centuries, shortly after Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II decided to relocate his court from the city of Amber. Protected by huge guard walls, the fairy-tale-like structure is still the home of the city's modern-day royal family and endures as one of the top places to visit in Jaipur.

City Palace is more than a sand-colored regal abode — it's a sprawling complex of buildings built around a series of landscaped garden courtyards overlooking Jaipur and Lake Palace. The entire property is a stunning display of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture.

The current occupants reside in the most eye-catching building, the Chandra Mahal , an elegant structure with curved eaves and domed rooftops. Each of its seven stories features an entirely different style. The ground floor is included in the price of admission, but you'll need to book a private tour to go upstairs.

Other noteworthy places for sightseeing at City Palace include the Mubarak Mahal (Welcome Palace), which contains displays of dazzling costumes and textiles; the Armoury, a museum-like space dedicated to preserving finely crafted daggers and swords; Pritam Niwas Chowk (Peacock Courtyard), which has mesmerizing doorways painted to look like the feathers of its namesake bird; and Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audience), which showcases the palace's exquisite collection of miniature paintings.

After exploring the palace, check out the Friends of the Museum Bazaar . It has some of Jaipur's highest quality souvenirs (with equally high prices).

Address: Tulsi Marg, Gangori Bazaar, J.D.A. Market, Pink City, Jaipur

Jantar Mantar

At first glance, Jantar Mantar may look to be nothing more than a bunch of larger-than-life abstract sculptures. But this is not an art gallery — this attraction contains a special collection of astronomical tools started by Rajput ruler Jai Singh II to measure the heavens nearly 300 years ago.

Each of the 20 or so structures at this UNESCO World Heritage Site serves a distinctive purpose. The observatory's massive sundial, known as Samrat Yantra , is particularly striking. At 27 meters tall, it casts a huge shadow that accurately measures time down to two seconds.

The elaborate Jai Prakash also tracks the passing of time, using the shadow of a metal plate suspended above a sunken bowl-like structure. The ingenious Rama Yantra, a circular walled structure, can locate the precise positions of celestial objects. Other tools at the observatory can track stars and even predict eclipses.

Hot tip: It's worth hiring a private guide at Jantar Mantar if you want to learn how each of the structures works.

Address: Gangori Bazaar, J.D.A. Market, Pink City, Jaipur

Hawa Mahal

If you had any preconceived notions about how the buildings in Jaipur look, they probably came from Hawa Mahal (Palace of Breeze). A top place to visit in Jaipur, this structure has all of the distinctive architectural features that appear in postcards of the city, from the salmon-pink, honeycombed facade, built to resemble the crown of the Hindu god Krishna, to the geometric accents and rows of tiny windows.

The landmark was built in 1799 to allow royal ladies to watch festivals on the street without being seen by the public. Its 953 windows allow plenty of breezes to pass through, making it an ideal summer palace (and the perfect spot to get relief from Rajasthan's oppressive heat today).

Tourists can learn about the history of the sandstone structure at the palace's small museum — the ceremonial armor collection is particularly interesting. You can also wander the narrow hallways that run throughout the palace. Don't miss the colorful glasswork in windows and doorways, which cast an otherworldly glow on chambers throughout Hawal Mahal.

Address: Hawa Mahal Rd., Badi Choupad, J.D.A. Market, Pink City, Jaipur

Amber Fort

Jaipur is home to one of India's most-visited forts: Amber Fort. Built in the year 1592, the sandstone and marble monolith stands atop a small hill roughly 20 minute's driving distance northeast of the center of Jaipur. This attraction is best known for being a pristine example of Rajasthani architecture.

Getting to Amber Fort typically involves a short uphill hike that's well worth the effort. It's decked out with intricate patterns of inlaid marble in nearly every color of the rainbow. The fort is laid out into four separate sections, each of which has a spectacular garden courtyard outside. While you'd never know it from above, you can actually explore the fort's underground tunnels , some of which have been restored.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site has a fascinating history of legends, betrayals, and romance — but the best way for tourists to hear these stories is to hire a private guide at the Amber Fort.

Address: Devisinghpura, Amer, Jaipur

Albert Hall Museum

When English writer Rudyard Kipling visited the Albert Hall Museum in Jaipur, he wrote that it was a "rebuke to all other museums in India from Calcutta downwards." That's high praise coming from the son of a curator, and fitting for this renowned institution.

The oldest museum in Rajasthan, the Albert Hall Museum boasts an extensive collection of art and historically significant artifacts. Come for the Egyptian mummy ; stay to see antique coins from different periods in India's history, charming permanent exhibits of miniature paintings, 18th-century costumes worn by members of different castes, and a peculiar collection of 19th-century clay figures demonstrating all the yoga poses.

Hot tip: Visit the museum at night, when multicolored lights brighten the exterior of the alluring building.

Address: Museum Road, Ram Niwas Garden, Kailash Puri, Adarsh Nagar, Jaipur

Birla Mandir

In a city that seems to be dipped from top to bottom in pink, the stark white marble Birla Mandir stands out — big time. The Hindu temple pays tribute to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and purity, and Vishnu, one of the religion's main deities. It's one of the best places to visit in Jaipur for tourists and Hindu devotees alike.

The marvelous structure exudes a quiet, peaceful vibe, offering just the right atmosphere to appreciate fine marble carvings, shrines to gods, and gorgeous sunset views. While you don't need more than 30 minutes to get a sense of the space, the experience will prove to be a restorative break from a day of sightseeing.

Address: Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg, Tilak Nagar, Jaipur

Nahargarh Fort

When it comes to sightseeing around Jaipur, the views don't get better than what you'll find at Nahargarh Fort. Also known as Tiger Fort , this nearly 300-year-old attraction overlooks the entire city from atop the Aravalli Hills — a prime location for the structure to defend the city against enemies many years ago.

More than just a formidable barrier though, this fort also contains Madhavendra Bhawan , a summer destination for royalty. The sumptuous Rajasthani building features a dozen identical boudoirs for the queens, which all connect to the king's suite through mural-filled corridors.

Tourists can also explore the fort's wax museum and sculpture park. And if you're feeling hungry, swing by one of the fort's many restaurants to tuck into traditional Indian cuisine.

Address: Krishna Nagar, Brahampuri, Jaipur

Galta Ji

Sources of water can be few and far between in the desert state of Rajasthan. So it's no wonder that when people discovered a natural spring in a mountain pass in the Aravalli Hills , they honored it by building the Hindu temple Galta Ji.

Nestled between cliffs, the temple features a few sacred water tanks, some with modest fountains, as well as frescoes that tell tales about the Hindu god Krishna.

Galta Ji is also one of the best places to visit in Jaipur if you want to see monkeys . It's home to hundreds of macaques and langurs (hence its nickname, "The Monkey Temple"). Daring tourists might opt to buy a handful of peanuts at the gate to tempt the monkeys, but you're better off just watching the rambunctious creatures from a distance.

Indian bracelets with diamonds and jewels

When the founders of the beloved Indian jewelry brand Amrapali Jewels started collecting antique jewelry in the late 1970s, they realized that some of these one-of-a-kind treasures deserved to be preserved and displayed. And so the Amrapali Museum was born, instantly becoming one of the top places to visit in Jaipur.

The jewelry museum in Jaipur features two full floors of glistening jewels and objects from its 4,000-piece collection, showcasing the vast range of Indian craftsmanship.

The displays show just how seriously Rajasthani people take their gold, silver, and precious gems. Among the jewels, you'll see silver bands for horses' legs, a chariot fully covered in silver, embellished shoe covers, and a glorious crown for a groom from Himachal Pradesh.

While these pieces are for display only, there's an extensive range of necklaces, bracelets, and other wearables available for purchase at the Museum Shop.

Address: Ground Floor, K, 14/B, Ashok Marg, Panch Batti, C Scheme, Ashok Nagar, Jaipur

For much of history, Rajasthan's most important handicrafts and works of art lived in private collections that were unavailable for viewing by the majority of the public. That all changed when the Government of Rajasthan opened the Museum of Legacies in 2017.

Housed in a two-centuries-old mansion, this tourist attraction showcases an assortment of Indian embroidery, giant Rajasthani puppets, Pichwai paintings, and much more.

Don't miss the magnificent marble latticework. The amount of swirling detail the artisans were able to carve from such a strong, hard stone is hypnotic.

Address: Kishanpole Bazar Road, Modikhana, Jaipur

Jal Mahal on Man Sagar Lake

One look at the Jal Mahal, and you might think you're seeing a mirage. The graceful palace seems to float atop the twinkling Man Sagar Lake — a calm sight compared to the rest of the frenzied city.

While it appears to have just one story, the Water Palace has four other levels submerged beneath a reservoir. The government no longer allows tourists to visit the site, but you can stroll a pathway around the lake to catch gorgeous views of the attraction. At night, it's lit up in all its glory, casting a golden, glowing reflection on the water.

Rajasthani puppets for sale in Jaipur

Jaipur is a mecca for souvenirs. Markets in the Pink City brim with everything from costume jewelry and precious gemstones to embroidered textiles, cobalt blue pottery, and Rajasthani puppets.

For a no-hassle shopping experience, head to the Rajasthali Handicrafts Emporium across from Ajmeri Gate. The government-run shop sells high-quality traditional handicrafts, like blue pottery decorated with yellow flowers, sets of wooden carvings depicting Rajasthani characters, and hand-printed saris. The prices you see on these items are fixed, so while you won't be able to negotiate a discount, you can also avoid the headache of bargaining.

Johari Bazar is a jewelry lover's paradise. The market glitters from top to bottom with dozens of shops selling everything from costume jewelry to fine silver and gold. No matter your budget, you'll find something beautiful to take home from here.

Finally, don't leave Jaipur without a quick shopping trip to Bapu Bazar. Located just a few blocks southwest of Johari Bazaar, the tourist-favorite market is chock full of handcrafted trinkets, locally made textiles, bedazzled slippers, and souvenirs galore.

Jaigarh Fort

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Amber Fort, Jaigarh Fort is one of the best places to visit in Jaipur if you want a remarkable view and up-close access to historical artifacts. It's best known for housing the Jaivana Cannon, which was considered to be the world's largest cannon on wheels when it was built in the early 18th century.

Visiting the attraction gives tourists an appreciation for the fort's role in keeping Jaipur and the surrounding area safe from invaders. Spread over a range of three kilometers, the fort features thick sandstone walls and a series of subterranean passages. It's thought to be the strongest of Jaipur's forts.

Beyond fortified, though, the fort was also an opulent place when it was in use. You can still see its majestic palace complex and intricate architecture on tours today.

Panna Meena ka Kund

Another one of the popular things to do in Amer after visiting the Amber Fort is taking a 10-minute walk south to visit Panna Meena ka Kund, a stepwell that dates back to the 16th century.

Locals used to come to this spot to fill their pots with water for rituals and household chores. It was also the go-to place to cool off from the intense desert heat.

Today, the attraction's primary purpose is as a backdrop for tourist photos — and for good reason. Its golden yellow hue and labyrinthine steps, which look like they were plucked from one of M.C. Escher's artworks, make for postcard-worthy images . But as tempting as it might be to enter the beautiful attraction for a selfie, Panna Meena ka Kund does not allow visitors to go inside, so keep your photo shoot to the exterior only.

Akshardham Temple in Jaipur at night

Akshardham Temple might look like an ancient site, but don't be fooled — this attraction was built in the 21st century as part of a series of 10 temples dedicated to the Hindu god Narayana (a form of Lord Vishnu).

Still, the 23-acre religious complex is an impressive place to spend the afternoon. The white marble and pink sandstone temple showcases the intricacy of Hindu architecture with its stone carvings of Hindu deities, animals, and scenery. Step inside to see massive pure-gold statues and pristine paintings. There's also a peaceful garden courtyard brimming with lush plants and a musical fountain just outside.

Address: Vidyut Nagar, Vaishali Nagar, Chitrakoot, Jaipur

Elephant Festival in Jaipur

Attending an annual festival is one of the top things to do in Jaipur, and the city's calendar is chock full of events.

In January, you can watch colorful creations fly through the sky during the International Kite Festival and get books signed by famous authors at the Jaipur Literature Festival.

The city hosts its Elephant Festival, during which the tusked animals are painted with Indian motifs and dressed in extravagant costumes, in February or March (depending on the moon cycle). And the two-day Teej Festival, a celebration that honors the union of Shiva and the goddess Parvati, occurs in July or August.

Best Time To Visit Jaipur

There are no second thoughts about the fact that the best time to explore Jaipur tourism is winter. The city shines in a different light and through misty mornings and chilly evenings, you explore a never-before-seen side of Jaipur tourism. The months from October to February make up the peak season in Jaipur. If you are travelling on a budget, we recommend delaying your trip or booking much in advance. The rush ensures that everything from food and shopping to transportation and accommodation in the city is expensive.

Summers in Jaipur are dreaded and the least preferred season by travellers. The days are extremely hot, thereby making sightseeing quite a task. We recommend avoiding travelling during summer if you have another option. Monsoon is a beautiful season to explore Jaipur tourism. The city doesn’t see too much rainfall and neither do you have to face the huge tourist rush that marks winter. Most budget travellers prefer travelling in this season since the weather is suitable and there are great discounts on hotels and restaurants.

If you happen to travel during the monsoon, we recommend including cycling tours and heritage walks in your Jaipur tourism itinerary. This not only ensures you see a different side of the city but it also gives you an opportunity to explore Jaipur tourism like a true local.

Top Attractions In Jaipur

Amber Fort

As you make your way up the narrow winding roads to Amber Fort, you can almost feel a surge of excitement. Yet nothing prepares you for the first glimpse of the majestic monument. The grand architecture and the landscaped gardens might have been renovated numerous times, but one can't miss the royal elements that make Amber Fort one of the most-visited monuments of Jaipur tourism.

The construction of the fort started in 1592 and was finally completed in the 18th century by Sawai Jai Singh. The fort is a fine example of Hindu and Rajputana style of architecture. The signature red sandstone runs throughout the vast fort and you can’t help but marvel at the grandeur. Amber Fort served as the royal residence in the days of yore and is broadly divided into four sections. Most tours begin from the main entrance to the fort which is known as Suraj Pol.

Diwan-e-Aam or the audience hall for the public occupies most of the second level of Amber Fort and the sheer size and vibrancy of the hall is mesmerising. The glasswork and the towering pillars give you an idea of the wealth of the royal era. Sheesh Mahal, another highlight of Amber Fort and Jaipur tourism is made entirely of glass paintings and the play of colours and sunlight is simply beautiful. With flower motifs in glass adorning the ceiling and walls, Sheesh Mahal is the most-visited attraction in Amber Fort and also the most beautiful. Also, attracting attention is Sukh Mahal which is made of sandalwood and ivory.

There are many guided tours to Amber Fort and you can choose one depending on your interests. From heritage walks and photography tours to cycling trips, Amber Fort is arguably the most sought-after monument that makes Jaipur tourism.

Exploring the fort can take anywhere between three and five hours and it's best to keep aside this time in your Jaipur tourism itinerary. We also recommend exploring the monument early in the morning and coming back for the light and sound show in the evening. Sheesh Mahal, the lush gardens and the views of the city below are some of the highlights of Amber Fort. The monument is visited by thousands of tourists everyday but that doesn't hamper your tour at all owing to the sheer size of Amber Fort.

Nahargarh Fort and Jaigarh Fort

Jaigarh and Nahargarh Forts are two grand structures which are situated amidst the Aravallis. Owing to the proximity of the monuments, both can be covered on the same day when you are exploring Jaipur tourism. Situated close to each other, these two forts are brilliant examples of Rajput defence forts as well as architectural skills. Jaigarh Fort was built in 1726 primarily to protect Amber Fort from attacks and after seeing the huge, impregnable walls, you can see why.

Jaigarh Fort is situated atop the Cheel ka Teela hills and is often referred to as the ‘Fort of Victory’ since it has never been conquered in any war. The most attractive feature of Jaigarh Fort is the majestic cannon on wheels which is set up on the second level. The largest in the world, the cannon is known as Jaivana and is truly breathtaking. Another reason why Jaigarh Fort features on most Jaipur tourism itineraries is due to the awe-inspiring views it offers of the city below. If you are a photographer, we suggest heading here just before sunrise so you can capture the beauty of this gorgeous city.

Nahargarh Fort was constructed as a retreat by Maharaja Sawai Singh II. Built in 1734, the mesmerising views of the city are completely worth the time you spend here. A wall connects Nahargarh Fort to Jaigarh Fort and it's quite inspiring to see the architectural feat they accomplished during that time.

Nahargarh Fort was primarily a retreat for women of the royal family. Known as Madhavendra Bhavan, the zenana was built on one side of the fort while Mardana Mahal occupies a different area of the fort. Your tour of the fort should also include a visit to Nahargarh Biological Park. Located a short distance from the fort, the park should also be part of your Jaipur tourism itinerary owing to a wide variety of flora and fauna.

  • City Palace

Standing tall in the centre of the city is an unmissable part of Jaipur tourism – the City Palace. The majestic City Palace was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh and occupied a major portion of the erstwhile royal city. The City Palace served as the seat of the Maharaja and one can still see remnants of the glorious era. The City Palace is divided into broad sections and the best way to ensure that you don’t miss out on anything is by heading out for a guided tour. You can include a guided tour in your Jaipur tourism itinerary by booking tickets at the City Palace office or through a local tour agency.

The architecture of the City Palace is a fusion of three to four architectural styles including Shilpa Shastra , Mughal, European and Rajput. While there were numerous people who were involved with the design of the City Palace, the main architects were Vidyadhar Bhattacharya and Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob. Red and pink sandstone dominate the architecture and you will find this colour theme throughout the monuments that are part of Jaipur tourism. There are three entrances to the palace which were carefully designed keeping in mind the intricate art on the walls of the gate.

The City Palace has gone through a series of changes but the outer gate has remained untouched for ages. The most attractive highlights of the palace are Chandra Mahal, Diwan-i-Aam and Maharani Mahal. Mubarak Mahal is another beauty which takes your breath away and is a must-visit for history lovers. The mahal served as a reception area but has now been converted into a museum. With exhibits dating back to the royal era, you can admire the arts and crafts of the state. Keep a look out for embroidered shawls, block-printed apparel, formal costumes and the ornamental clothes adorned by Sawai Madho Singh I.

It can take about two to three hours to explore the City Palace so we recommend starting early and keeping sufficient time in your Jaipur tourism itinerary.

Hawa Mahal is located on the main road amidst bustling markets and the mesmerising red- and pink-sandstone structure features on most Jaipur tourism itineraries. Built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799, Hawa Mahal owes its name to the unique architecture.

The mahal has more than 900 small mesh windows which allow cool wind to enter during summer. The wind keeps the mahal cool and comfortable during hot summers in Jaipur. The palace was constructed primarily for this reason. It allowed the women from the royal family to view the festivities from the windows and participate in the celebrations. It wasn’t considered appropriate for the women in the family to openly participate in any of the public proceedings.

You can book a guided tour of Hawa Mahal in your Jaipur tourism itinerary to learn more about the architecture and the history of the palace. There are five floors in the mahal but not all areas are open to the public. Some parts of the palace are in ruins and it’s best not to venture into these areas, especially if you are travelling with children. The top of the mahal offers stunning views of the city, the City Palace and Jantar Mandir.

We suggest heading here in the morning since exploring the mahal will not take more than two to three hours. If you have time in your Jaipur tourism itinerary, we also recommend spending time in the market outside Hawa Mahal. Offering a plethora of Jaipur’s popular arts and crafts, the market is a delight for shopping enthusiasts.

Activities And Things To Do In Jaipur

Spend a day at Elefantastic

Elephants have been an integral part of Mughal architecture and there is no better way of exploring Jaipur tourism than by spending time with them. This is not only a great way to interact with elephants but it also gives you an opportunity to learn more about the local culture.

If you want to include a day tour to Elefantastic in your Jaipur tourism itineraries, you must keep some extra budget. The activity is expensive and can set you back by Rs.4000 to Rs.6000 per person.

Enjoy a cultural evening in Chokhi Dhani

Chokhi Dhani has become a favourite for travellers from across the world. A luxury resort located a few kilometres away from the main city, it offers you a peek into the local way of life. The resort recreates the rural villages of Rajasthan and brings together the various art and craft forms that have put the state on the global map.

Chokhi Dhani is divided into two sections. One section comprises the resort that is home to village-styled cottages and the other section houses a cultural village which sees performers from across the state. The resort is open for only the guests that book a stay, while the cultural village is open for everyone. The cultural village opens in the evening and includes a tour of the village, access to all the stalls in the village including dance, music and food stalls. While the entry to the village is free, you have to pay for the food which is served in the form of a sit-down buffet and a traditional-style buffet. You can choose either of the options but the traditional-style buffet is a favourite with all guests. The buffet includes all traditional dishes including gatte ki curry, bajra roti , kachori , lehsun ki chutney , ker sangri and khichdi . There is a separate dining area for those who don’t want to try Rajasthani cuisine. Serving Italian, Chinese, continental and Indian cuisines, the buffet is a favourite with most travellers. However, if you truly want to experience Jaipur tourism, we recommend choosing the traditional buffet.

A visit to the cultural village is sought after in most Jaipur tourism itineraries owing to the huge number of activities and cultural performances. You can spend time at the intriguing parrot stall deciphering your future, indulge in some traditional games including shooting balloons and arm wrestling, explore the man-made maze village-maze covered with thick greens and spend time in the bustling shopping complex. The shopping complex gives artists from across the state a platform to exhibit their arts. If shopping is on your mind while exploring Jaipur tourism, we definitely recommend spending time here.

Shop in the city’s markets

You can’t explore Jaipur tourism without including a visit to the city’s bustling markets. The markets of the city are its lifeline and if you want to experience the pulse of the city, there isn’t a better way. There are many tours that include a visit to the markets but you can easily explore them on your own. Most of the markets are located close to each other and irrespective of your interests, we recommend visiting all the markets in Jaipur.

Johari Market is popular for precious stones, semi-precious stones and silver jewellery. Exquisite designs and handcrafted jewellery puts this market on the list of top markets to visit in India. While bargaining is not frowned upon, most of the rates depend on the material and make of the jewellery.

Nehru Bazar is another delight which is part of Jaipur tourism. Offering a variety of footwear and bags, this market is ideal for those who enjoy great bargains. Sireh Deori Bazaar is located opposite Hawa Mahal and the series of shops here are a delight for shopping buffs. Among the most sought-after shopping markets in the city, you can find a variety of knick-knacks as well as wall hangings, leather shoes, and puppets. Some of the other markets that can feature in your Jaipur tourism itinerary, we recommend visiting Chandpole Market, Kishanpole Market and the Rajasthan Emporium.

How To Travel In Jaipur

The easiest way to explore Jaipur tourism is by hopping on a cycle rickshaw or an auto rickshaw. The old city is dotted with these easy and convenient means of transport which are more enjoyable than you’d imagine. Owing to the popularity of Jaipur tourism, private cab companies like Ola and Uber have also made travelling in the city easier.

However, for those on a budget trip, we recommend booking an auto rickshaw for your sightseeing sprees or choosing a cycling tour. Auto rickshaws typically charge between Rs.300 and Rs.450 for a full day of sightseeing. This includes a visit to Hawa Mahal, City Palace, Nahargarh Fort, Amber Fort and Jaigarh Fort. If you also want to include a visit to Birla Temple, Jantar Mantar and Albert Hall Museum, you will have to negotiate the fares.

Jaipur also has a well-connected network of roads which makes travelling by buses easy. Though, if you are on a trip, we recommend not using buses as a means of transport simply because of the irregular schedule. Buses don’t always run on time and it might ruin your planned Jaipur itinerary.

Jaipur Itinerary: how to spend 2 days in Jaipur

This post is the ultimate 2 day Jaipur itinerary. Jaipur is the biggest city in Rajasthan and part of the so-called Golden triangle. The Golden Triangle in India is a popular tourist circuit that includes the cities of Delhi , Agra , and Jaipur. It is called the “Golden Triangle” because of the triangular shape formed by these three cities on a map, and because they are home to some of India’s most iconic landmarks and cultural attractions.

Jaipur is rightly among them. It is also known as the “Pink City,” and known for its colorful architecture, traditional handicrafts, and historic landmarks such as the City Palace, Jantar Mantar, and Hawa Mahal. Although Jaipur is chaotic and crowded at first sight, the city has many hidden gems to discover. Therefore it is important to plan your Jaipur itinerary well.

Jaipur itinerary: the pink city

Jaipurs history started in 1727 when Maharaja Jai Singh wanted to develop a new city. The design and architecture was carefully planned and reflected the ruler’s love for mathematics and science. He even built an astronomical observatory along with the city palace.

When in 1876 the prince of Wales came for a visit, the whole city was painted a terracotta pink. Jaipur’s historic center still reflects its royal past. In addition, the bazaar is a great place for shopping and trying different kinds of street food. The city itself deserves at least one full day in your Jaipur itinerary.

However, the real beauty of Jaipur lies in the rocky Aravalli hills around the city. This is where ancient forts, temples and palaces can keep you busy for another day in your Jaipur itinerary.

My Jaipur itinerary

Back in 2007 I was travelling during the monsoon season when there were few other tourists in India. After travelling on my own through Rajasthan for almost a month I was in desperate need to meet some other travellers.

Although I am not a big fan of tours, they can be a great way to meet other people. Also, Jaipur overwhelmed me at first and I only had a 2 day Jaipur itinerary. Therefore I decided to book a city tour with the Rajasthan Tourist Office . I was looking forward to meet other english speaking tourists.

The next day I entered the tour bus to discover that the bus was full with South Indian families. I was the only foreigner so there was a lot of staring and giggling. It felt very uncomfortable at first but throughout the day I witnessed how friendly and welcoming Indian people can be.

I was quickly adopted by several families that made it their mission to look over my well-being during the day. They shared their food with me, bought me drinks and showed me around. In the end this tour was a heartwarming experience showing me the true Indian hospitality.

To be honest, I didn’t like Jaipur that much on my first visit. On the tour I saw everything in one day, but it also meant that I had to rush through things. It was only on my second visit to Jaipur that I really appreciated everything it had to offer. Being able to explore the sights at my own pace made a big difference.

Jaipur bazaar

A 2 day Jaipur itinerary

In my opinion you need at least 2 days in Jaipur to get a good feel of the city and its sights in the Aravalli hills. I would suggest to spend one day of your Jaipur itinerary exploring the bazaar and the historic center and another day visiting the sights that are outside of Jaipur such as the famous Amber fort.

Jaipur itinerary day 1

City palace.

Start the first day of your Jaipur itinerary at the Jaipur city palace . This is one of the top tourist attractions in Jaipur. Therefore I suggest to come here early before the tour groups arrive.

The city palace was one of the first buildings built by Maharaja Jai Singh when he moved the capital from Amber to Jaipur. The home of the Jaipur royal family was a work in progress and it was continuously expanded reflecting the different architectural styles that were in fashion at the time. Inside you will find beautifully decorated gates, courtyards, gardens, pavilions and lavish rooms with collections of art, jewellery, costumes and military items.

Jaipurs city palace is well worth the entrance fee. Highlights include the three entrance gates to the palace, the Diwan e Aam (Mughal hall of audience), the Diwan e Khas (hall of private audience), the peacock gate at the Pritam Niwas Chowk, the Chandra mahal (moon palace) and the Mubarak Mahal (welcome palace).

Like the Udaipur city palace, part of this complex is still used as the private residence of the former royal family of Jaipur. They continue to organize lots of special events in the palace, especially during festivals.

Insider tip : try to be here early as it can get very crowded during the day. That is also why I put this first in your Jaipur itinerary.

Jaipur city palace

Jantar Mantar

Maharaja Jai Singh loved mathematics and science and he ordered the construction of five astronomical observatories. One in Delhi, Ujjain, Mathura, Varanasi and of course his own city Jaipur. The one in Jaipur is right behind the city palace and there are nineteen architectural instruments that facilitated astronomical observations.

If you are really into astronomy I recommend a guide that can explain the use of the different instruments and how they work.

Jantar mantar in Jaipur India

The Hawa Mahal or the palace of the winds is another top tourist attraction in Jaipur. The impressive terracotta pink facade, that is actually the back of the palace, has over 900 small windows. All of them have intricate and delicate latticework.

These windows allowed cool air to come through and allowed the royal ladies to observe everyday life in the street below without being seen.

It’s possible to go inside to see the view from the top. However, you can get similar views in one of the cafes opposite the Hawa mahal, except that they also offer the best viewpoint on the Hawa mahal itself.

Therefore, the Hawa Mahal makes a perfect lunch stop. Just make sure you leave some space in your belly to try some street food in the bazaar later.

Hawa mahal in Jaipur India

Spend the rest of your afternoon in Jaipur’s bustling bazaar. Jaipur is famous for its high quality handicrafts and it’s one of the best places in Rajasthan to go shopping. One of the famous arts in Jaipur is a block printing technique called Anokhi . Look out for the beautiful textiles that include clothes and linens such as bed sheets and cushion covers.

The bazaar in Jaipur has different sections. For textiles head to Bapu bazaar with its characteristic terracotta pink walls. Nearby Johari bazaar is one of the oldest parts of the market and this area is all about jewellery and silver. Here you will find lots of bangles as well. The Tripoli bazaar near the tripoli gate has lots of utensils and tools made from brass, copper and steel. At last the Chandpole bazaar near the Chandpole gate has miniature paintings, perfumes and spices.

Jaipurs bazaar is also a great place to try street food. Don’t be scared of the Delhi belly. I can not guarantee you it won’t happen, but if you look at which places are busy with locals you will most likely be fine. A lot of the stalls are specialized in just one type of street food, but have developed it into perfection over the years.

The Golcha cinema samosa stall serves for example the best samosas in town while the lassiwala on MI road shop 321 has the best lassis and Jagannath Sharma Pakodi walla has the best pakodas. Also don’t miss the Kachori at Radhe Kachori wala . These crispy and flaky snacks with different fillings are delicious. Finally, head to Pandit Kulfi for the traditional Indian icecream Kulfi.

Insider tip : Be prepared to negotiate and learn the art of bargaining beforehand. As a tourist you will be quoted a higher price. The first price you hear is almost always unreasonable. But then, they won’t expect you to agree immediately. Bargain well and it’s still possible to score a good deal at Jaipur’s bazaar.

Jaipur bazaar

Raj Mandir Cinema

If you are looking to do something in the evening I can recommend an outing to the famous Raj Mandir cinema to see a Bollywood movie. It is the largest cinema in Jaipur and famous for its opulent interiors.

Jaipur itinerary day 2

On the second day of your Jaipur itinerary I can recommend you to rent a tuk tuk to explore some sights that lie in the rocky Aravalli hills that surround the city of Jaipur.

There are tours, but you might find that they rush through things. Renting a tuk tuk allows you to not only see things at your own pace, but also include some off the beaten path gems.

Start the second day of your Jaipur itinerary at the famous Amber fort. Get here early before the tour groups do, because this is one of the most popular forts in the Aravalli hill range near Jaipur.

It was built by the local Meena tribe in the tenth century, but not much is left of the original structure. What you see nowadays comes from the hands of the Rajput Maharanas from the 16th and 17th century. The large complex has different sections, each with their own gates and courtyards.

Highlights include the beautifully decorated Ganesh Pol entrance, the Sila Devi temple and the mirror palace.

Amber Fort

Panna Meena Ka Kund

The 16th century Panna Meena Ka Kund stepwells are only a 15 minute walk from the Amer fort, but only get a fraction of its visitors. Stepwells are quite common in the desert areas of India and were used to store the monsoon rains for the drier months. The geometric staircases allowed people to reach the pool as water levels changed throughout the year.

The Panna Meena ka Kund are not necessarily the most beautiful stepwells in Rajasthan, but being so near the Amber fort they are definitely worth a quick stop on your Jaipur itinerary.

Jaigarh Fort

Jaigarh fort or victory fort was designed to protect Amber fort and the two were closely interlinked. There is even a secret underground tunnel that connects the two. If you are up for the walk this is probably the most interesting way to get from Amber fort to Jaigarh fort. Otherwise it’s a quick tuk tuk ride.

Jaigarh fort has a relatively simple design and the main reason to visit this fort is its spectacular location on top of the Aravalli hill range overlooking the village of Amer and Amber fort below.

Views from Jaigarh fort

In between Jaipur and the Amer fort lies the picturesque Jal Mahal. This yellowish sandstone building seems to float on the manmade sagar lake and there are in fact 4 levels underwater. Jal Mahal means water palace, but it was in fact the maharaja’s hunting lodge. As far as I know you can not enter the palace and you will have to do with a quick picture stop at the side of the road.

Jal Mahal in Jaipur India

Gaitore cenotaphs

The Gaitore cenotaphs or Gaitore ki chhatriyan receives very few visitors, despite its beauty. It was my tuk tuk driver that told me about this hidden gem that is just a short ride away from the Jal Mahal palace.

The Gaitore cenotaphs are the royal burial grounds for the Rajput kings. The architecture is stunning and the sandstone and marble tombs are richly decorated with onion shaped domes and intricate carvings of battle scenes and animals.

It’s a very serene and peaceful spot. I was the only tourist around and I would certainly recommend to include the Gaitore cenotaphs in your Jaipur itinerary.

Gaitore ki chhatriyan

Nahargarh fort

Finish the second day of your Jaipur itinerary at the Nahargarh fort for a beautiful sunset. Like Jaigarh fort it is not the architecture, but the views that make it worth a visit. The rooftop terrace offers the best views over the city of Jaipur.

Views from Nahargarh fort

More than 2 days in Jaipur

If you have more than 2 days in Jaipur there are some other sights that you could include in your Jaipur itinerary.

Patrika gate

The colorful Patrika gate is a quite new addition to the tourist attractions in Jaipur. It opened in 2016 and functions as a gate to the large Jawahar circle park. It’s already hugely popular on instagram. If you have some time left in your Jaipur itinerary this is definitely a place I would recommend.

Anokhi museum of hand printing

If you are interested in the Anokhi textiles that you can buy in the bazaar you should consider a visit to the Anokhi museum of hand printing . They also have a small shop that guarantees you the best quality of Anokhi textiles.

Birla Mandir temple

The white marble Birla Mandir temple is worth a quick visit if you have some time left. People come here to pray to Vishnu and Laxmi (goddess of wealth). It was built in 1988 by the Birla family who have built a number of other temples in places like Delhi, Calcutta and Hyderabad.

Birla mandir temple in Jaipur

Galta ji monkey temple

Galta ji is a local pilgrimage place that gets few foreign visitors. It’s a complex of several palaces and temples with stunning architecture and beautiful paintings inside. I loved how peaceful and serene this place was, despite its popularity among the locals.

Galta ji’s location was also quite beautiful in a hidden corner of the Aravalli hills. There are lots of peacocks and monkeys as well and therefore people call it the monkey temple.

Galta ji monkey temple in Jaipur India

Galw bagh monkey temple

There are actually two monkey temples near Jaipur. Beautiful and clean Galtaji and the more famous, but dirty Galwh Bagh. People com e here to feed the tame monkeys. The stairs leading up to the temple are fullwith beggars, animals and dirt.

It’s one of those Indian experiences you will never forget. Can I recommend a visit? The interaction between the monkeys, goats, pigs and beggars that call this temple their home is interesting to watch and the views on top of the temple are beautiful.

Galw bagh monkey temple

Chand Baori stepwells

Less than 100 kilometers from Jaipur, in the village of Abhaneri lie the oldest and largest stepwells in Rajasthan. These stepwells were used in desert areas of India for thousands of years to store the monsoon rain water. The characteristic geometric staircases leading down to the pool are visually stunning.

The Chand Baori stepwells receive few visitors. Although its maintenance is not that good there are some wonderful stone sculptures of Hindu gods. It makes a perfect day trip from Jaipur. To get there by public transportation is not that easy, therefore renting a taxi is best.

Jaipur itinerary travel tips

Where to eat in jaipur.

My favourite restaurant in Jaipur was the Al Umar restaurant . The kebabs were one of the best I had in Rajasthan. They come in gravy curries with different colours and tastes. The green coloured one (hariyali kebab) was absolutely delicious as well as the white coloured one (malai kebab).

Al Umar restaurant in Jaipur

Where to sleep in Jaipur

Vinayak Guesthouse : The clean Vinayak Guest house was one of my favourite accomodations in Rajasthan. A nice rooftop restaurant, beautiful rooms, good Wi-fi and friendly people.

Zostel Hostel : For those on a budget I can recommend Zostel Hostel . They have branches all over India including Jaipur and are good value for money.

Vinayak guesthouse Jaipur

How to get around Jaipur

Uber and Ola : Uber is a good way to get around in Jaipur, but India has its own similar business called Ola cabs that is even more popular. The good thing about both Ola and Uber is that it is cheaper than a tuk tuk and you do not need to negotiate the price or explain where you need to go. Both offer a pool option in which you share your ride with others that makes it even more affordable.

Ola also has a tuk tuk option that is one of the best and most affordable way to travel for shorter distances. I never had to wait long for a Ola or Uber to come and most of the time when I ordered the pool option I had no other passengers.

There is of course always the option of stopping a tuk tuk on the road, but be prepared to negotiate about the price.

When to visit Jaipur

The best time to visit Jaipur is between October and March. In October temperatures cool down and you might have a chance to join the festivities for Dussehra and Diwali. India’s biggest festivals.

Temperatures remain pleasant till March. In April and May, Rajasthan in general, will be extremely hot. In June it is the start of the monsoon that lasts till September and will see a lot of rainfall.

Sustainable travel in Jaipur

Jaipur is beautiful, but it is also a crowded city with a lot of trash and pollution. It might sound obvious, but don’t add to the litter problem. Try to avoid using plastic and use dustbins wherever possible. Bring a reusable water bottle that you can refill at places that have drinking water facilities.

If you want to hire a taxi for the day to bring you to the sights outside of Jaipur consider Sakha cabs . They are a social enterprise providing safe transport solutions for women by women while being part of a bigger civil society movement to push for women’s empowerment and gender equality.

At last try to avoid elephant rides. They are still very popular in Jaipur, especially at the Amber fort. Besides the ethical concerns about elephant rides in general, the abuse of elephants in Jaipur is well documented. If you really want to spend time with elephants you can visit Elefantastic . This ethical elephant village in Jaipur tries to break the cycle of abusive tourism. They offer rescued elephants a safe place to live in with a focus on their well being.

We’re considering a visit to Jaipur in July. Thanks for the inspiration. How many days would you recommend at a minimum?

I would say 2-3 days would be best.

This post brings back a lot of wonderful Jaipur memories and you captured it all in words and photos pretty nicely.

Awesome pictures! Love how you captured the lives of day-to-day people. We visited Jaipur almost six years ago, so your post bought back some great memories. Your food from Al Umar looks delicious!!

Jaipur looks like a wonderful place! To be honest I have never heard about it before, but now after reading your post I would love to visit ! The view from that fort is incredible! And the monkeys are so cute!!

What a great mix of tourist spots and lesser known destinations. I love it that you went on a tour looking for other travelers like yourself, but instead found yourself immersed in the regional culture. You probably would not have had the experience if you were not alone! Sounds like an interesting and peaceful day trip!

Definitely a variety of wonderful spots here. The cenotaphs look particularly stunning. The carvings in the marble would be beautiful to see in person.

Amber Fort looks amazing! Ther are very beautiful sights in Jaipur…and those views! I also like the fact that you showed the people living there in your photos… brings that city to life!

Wow all those colours – a real onslaught on the senses. I love it. I could experience it so clearly through the screen with your pictures.

Jaipur looks so beautiful, I’ve been wanting to visit for a long time! Thanks for sharing some of the highlights, I’ll keep these in mind when I’m planning!

This looks amazing! I’m planning a trip to India next year, so this is really helpful 🙂

Beautiful post, I visited Jaipur in the 90s and long to return

I’d been put off India by a friend who visited and now I am having to re-think my biases. Thanks for sharing this.

A great itinerary! I went to Jaipur on my first trip to India but would love to go back there and explore more.

So many amazing things to do! And your pictures are beautiful. I must visit one day

Beautiful! The Golden Triangle is absolutely on my bucket list!

I had a trip scheduled to India and I had to cancel because of the travel restrictions, so next year hopefully I will get to go and I am saving this guide. I love it, great to follow, and very well illustrated.

I’ve always wanted to visit Jaipur because it looks like such an enchanting city. Hope India opens up soon so I can start planning a trip there 🙂

This is such a helpful and comprehensive post, with so much good information. I went to quite a few of the places you’ve mentioned when I visited Jaipur, but your post makes me want to go back!

This brings back happy memories of my trip to Rajasthan and Jaipur. Sadly I lost all my photos so your photos are a delight.

Jaipur is as colorful as the entire state of Rajasthan. Vibrant everywhere! That munchkin monkey is such an adorable click!

Jaipur is by far the most beautiful city! Great captures!!

14 Unique Things To Do in Jaipur, The Pink City of India

The city of Jaipur was the very first stop on my journey through Rajasthan and as soon as I arrived I completely understood the saying: “You either fall madly in love with India, or you hate it.”

For me it definitely was the first one and a sensory overload happened from the moment I got off the plane.

Jaipur is one of the most photogenic cities in India and there are so many amazing things to do in this vibrant city.

In this guide I’ll tell you everything you need to know based on my own personal experience.

IF YOU’RE PLANNING A TRIP TO RAJASTHAN YOU’LL WANT TO CHECK  MY 2 WEEKS RAJASTHAN ITINERARY INCLUDING 31 OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACES TO VISIT IN THIS STATE .

14 Unique Things To Do in Jaipur, The Pink City of India

Unique Things To Do in Jaipur, India

Jaipur, also known as the Pink City , is the capital and largest city of Rajasthan. The ‘pink’ of the Pink City is Gerua (or ochre) in which the city was coated during the visit of the Prince of Wales in 1905-06.

It’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in India and is also part of what they call the Golden Triangle of India tourism which also includes a visit to Delhi and Agra. Jaipur is often the gateway to visiting the other cities in Rajasthan such as Udaipur, Jodhpur or Jaisalmer .

As of 2019 the Pink City of Jaipur is also a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site .

How to reach Jaipur

People from all parts of the world come to observe the beauty and to know about the cultural legacy of Jaipur. Since Jaipur is one of the major cities in the country it is very well connected to all other corners of India which leans that there are several types of public transport possible such as by air, bus or train.

On my journey to India I flew from Delhi to Sanganer airport , which is only 10km from Jaipur. As an international tourist you can take connecting flights to Jaipur from both Delhi and Mumbai.

Like I just said there are plenty of national flights connecting Delhi with Jaipur! Once you get down at the airport, hire a taxi or take a bus to reach the main city.

Jaipur is linked with the all the major cities of India through the network of National Highways 8, 11 and 12 to only name a few. Another option is to go by bus which only takes 3,5 hours. There’s a really good bus service provided by Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) with the buses at about every half an hour.

Jaipur is well connected by railroad to a ton of different cities in India including Delhi. There are three main railway junctions including Jaipur, the main station; Gandhinagar and Durgapara. Every train stops at Jaipur junction and a few of the trains stop at Gandhinagar and Durgapara.

Why you should visit Jaipur

Jaipur is a city steeped in history and culture where the past comes alive through magnificent forts and colourful palaces. During your visit you’ll get to experience where the maharaja’s used to live.

The streets are buzzing and honestly there is never a dull moment when you look out of your tuk tuk. There’s a mix of cars, motorcycles, chicken and cows all over the place and still no one gets hurt in the process.

The bazaars of Jaipur are known for their Rajasthani jewellery and I myself picked up some stunning earrings along the way!

14 Unique Things To Do in Jaipur, The Pink City of India

When is the best time to visit Jaipur

Jaipur is located in a semi-desert regio, which has three distinct seasons : a warm dry winter, an unbearably hot spring/summer and a brief but intense monsoon season. I went in May which is part of the unbearably hot summer and I tell you, they’re not exaggerating.

There were times when we started exploring Jaipur in the early morning and by 7am the temperature had climbed up to 40°C. It’s no wonder we had to seek refuge in the AC during the day and that at times discovering all of these beautiful places in Jaipur felt like a struggle.

The winter months (November to Februari) are the best time to visit Jaipur and also the rest of Rajasthan for that matter. The weather is dry, sunny and warm. Due to its desert climate it does get chilly in the evenings so don’t forget to bring a jumper with you!

Where to stay in Jaipur

Luxury trip.

  • Fairmont Jaipur – Built in the tradition of the region’s grand Mughal palaces, this majestic hotel offers the best in modern amenities and truly is a royal destination.
  • Rambagh Palace – This hotel is known as the ‘Jewel of Jaipur’ and is the former residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur.
  • Samode Haveli  – An urban oasis in the historic walled city of Jaipur, Samode Haveli is a traditional Indian mansion set in a verdant garden.
  • Samode Palace – Located a little outside of Jaipur but one of the most beautiful hotels I have ever seen.

BUDGET TRIP

  • Umaid Bhawan – Heritage Style Hotel – A stunning 4 star hotel once crowned as one of the best hotels in Jaipur!
  • Umaid Mahal – Heritage Style Hotel – A Jaipur heritage style hotel providing true Rajasthani hospitality in Jaipur.

14 Awesome Things To Do in Jaipur

1. amer fort.

Amer Fort, also known as Amber Fort, is located about 11km from the city centre and it’s one of the most popular things to do in Jaipur ! Therefore I recommend you to visit it as early as possible in the morning.

The entrance to the fort is a little higher up and a narrow road will lead you to the main gate. The best way to reach the top is to simply walk, while you’re at it you’ll burn off some of that naan bread! To my horror I saw a lot of people choose to go up to the fort by means of an elephant. This is one of the most unethical things you could ever do and I truly hope you won’t.

For elephants to behave in such a way they had to be tortured from a very young age and the carriage on their back alone is way to heavy for them to carry.

If you would like more insight into this topic please visit this article of mine – How to visit an Ethical Elephant Sanctuary .

When it comes to visiting the fort we did hire a local guide on the spot. There are so many hidden corners to this fort that it would be a shame to not see everything.

And this way you support the locals and you learn a thing or two about the history and culture of Amer.

TIP – In the evening there’s a beautiful light and sound show.

14 Unique Things To Do in Jaipur, The Pink City of India

  • Opening Hours – 8am to 5.30pm and 6.30pm to 9.15pm
  • Entrance fee – INR 500
  • Duration – 2 to 3 hours
  • Other activities close to Amer Fort – Panna Meena ka Kund, Nahargarh Fort, Great Wall of Amer

MAKE SURE TO READ MY FULL GUIDE ON VISITING AMER FORT FOR A LOT MORE DETAILS & PHOTOS – AMER FORT IN JAIPUR, THE COMPLETE VISITING GUIDE .

2. Nahargarh Fort

Nahargarh Fort is one of the best forts in Jaipur and stands on the edge of the Aravalli Hills, overlooking the Pink City. Along with Amer Fort and Jaigarh Fort it once formed a strong defence line.

But these days the Nahargarh Fort is mostly known as one of the best places to see the sunset in Jaipur and so we did on our first evening in India! We jumped in one of the Tuk Tuk’s in front of our hotel and after bumpy ride of about 30 minutes we arrived at the entrance of this magnificent fort. We settled on a return time with our driver and he would wait for us outside of the fort.

The view over the Pink City was absolutely mesmerising and at one point I had to pinch myself to believe I was actually sitting there, in the middle of India!

I climbed up the wall to get a better view, me being a midget and all, but always be cautious when doing so. The locals and the guards are not a fan of this so I would actually advise you to go a little more down to have more privacy .

14 Unique Things To Do in Jaipur, The Pink City of India

  • Opening hours – Every day from 10am until 10pm. I would not attempt to hike down after 10pm cause Nahargarh Fort is located within a nature park that’s full of wild animals. And yes, there are tigers around Jaipur!
  • Entrance fee – INR 200
  • Duration – 1 to 2 hours

RAJASTHAN IS FILLED WITH STUNNING FORTS & PALACES AND I WROTE A DETAILED GUIDE WITH TONS OF PHOTOS & DETAILS – THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FORTS & PALACES IN RAJASTHAN

3. The Great Wall of Amer

Climbing the Great Wall of Amer is one of the most fun and free things to do in Jaipur ! It gets its name from its impressive length and as a reference to the Great Wall of China. But no one knows exactly how long the wall is.

Unfortunately a big chunk of this masterpiece is crumbling down fast but so far the local government only paid attention to the segments that are visible to the public and tourists. This could lead to loss of more than 50% of the wall in total.

The best place to climb up the Great Wall is right across from the entrance of Amer Fort. There’s a small staircase that will lead you all the way up and I can guarantee you that you’ll have an amazing view over the Aravalli Hills and Amer Fort! It’s a steep way up and in May it was pretty brutal because of the heat but like with everything in India it was worth the struggle!

TIP – A lot of people confuse the Great Wall of Amer with the Jaipur Wall. These are not the same structures and the Jaipur Wall protected the wall city area of Jaipur.

14 Unique Things To Do in Jaipur, The Pink City of India

  • Opening hours – 24/7
  • Entrance fee – Free

4. Panna Meena ka Kund

Panna Meena ka Kund, also known as the most Instagrammable stepwell is actually also a hidden gem in Jaipur . This peculiar place is located only 10 minutes driving from Amer Fort and that’s why most tourists completely forget about it.

If you’re into photography then this architectural masterpiece has to be on your list of things to do and see in Jaipur. The zigzag structure of the stairs in combination with the water bassin below lends itself to some incredible photo ops.

The stepwell is protected by local guards to keep a close eye if you’re following the rules. As of recent it is not allowed to walk down the stairs anymore, this to preserve the monument en due to the fact that a lot of accidents happened over the past years. I can imagine people running up and down, taking selfies and maybe even falling over into the bassin.

During my visit in 2018 it was “allowed”. We asked the guard if it was possible to go down and he told us that for INR 100 we could have 10 minutes but only when there’s no other people around.

  • Duration – 30 minutes

5. Monkey Temple

That one time in India where we hiked up another mountain in the blistering heat to simply realise there was a parking lot right in front of the entrance of the temple. Then again this way we also passed by the Sun Temple which was actually my favourite part!

The Monkey Temple, also known as Galta Ji, is a large Hindu complex located about 10km from the city centre of Jaipur . It’s not hard to see where it gets its name from. The temple is literally lined with monkeys and none of them are afraid of tourists! If you’re brave enough to feed them be prepared to get robbed as well.

6. Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal is a pink palace in the heart of the Pink City and you can’t visit Jaipur and not see this magnificent building.

When I was doing my research for my trip to India I came across several images of this structure and I got so fascinated by it! It was crazy to discover in real life that it’s not much more than a beautiful facade in the middle of a busy street. There’s a small sidewalk in front of it with a fence but the best view is from across the street in one of the rooftop bars .

Hawa Mahal means the “Palace of Winds” and it has 953 small windows that were built to keep the wind on blowing through the palace so it would cool off.

Another legend actually states that Hawa Mahal was constructed by the Maharaja as a separate complex for the ladies of his harem. For each lady there was a window through which they could watch the daily life unfold down below.

Caffé Palladio is the perfect spot to have lunch after a busy day of exploring the city of Jaipur! It’s one of the most beautiful restaurants in Jaipur and the Art Deco vibes are splendid.

Caffé Palladio belongs to the same owner as Bar Palladio . Another stunning restaurant but one where I didn’t have a good experience at all. We had made a reservation to have cocktails and dinner at Bar Palladio and of course I brought my camera with me. Upon arriving the manager then told me that to enter with my camera I had to pay INR 3000. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing and after going into a discussion we decided to leave.

I have heard from several other bloggers that they were allowed to take photos inside with their smartphone for free. I have no idea why at Bar Palladio they made such a fuss about a regular camera. But I wanted you to know before you make a reservation!

The service at Caffé Palladio however was impeccable and the vibe here was way more relaxed!

To commemorate the triumph of Maharaja Sawai Ishwari Singh, the magnificent victory tower known as Sargasuli Tower has stood upright amid the pink city of Jaipur since 1749. The rivalry between the two brothers – Ishwari Singh and Madho Singh- is also interesting. The marriage of Sawai Jai Singh II to the Mewari princess Sisodia may have had a clause mandating that Maharani Chandra Kanwar’s child become the King. This disapproval led to a rivalry between the two brothers for the throne, leading to the Battle of Rajmahal. Sawai Ishwari Singh won and ordered the erection of this minaret in commemoration of his victory.
