Max Hopp set to make PDC European Tour return in first appearance since 2022

Max Hopp will return to the PDC stage. On Sunday, Max managed to qualify for the German Darts Championship , which will be played from August 30th to September 1st in Hildesheim.

Hopp defeated Marcel Gomula (6-2), former Tour Card holder Michael Unterbuchner (6-0), LukasFraulob (6-1), Thomas Köhnlein (6-2) and Oliver Müller (6-5) on his way to qualifying. He last played on the European Tour in April 2022.

Niko Springer, Matthias Ehlers and Dragutin Horvat are the other three players who qualified alongside Hopp. Horvat showed class on his way to qualifying when he reached the round of 32 with an average of 107.85 in the last 16.

Martin Schindler - From the shadow of Max Hopp to the German number one with a stumbling block

Nico Kurz, Nico Blum, Kevin Troppmann and Jan Dückers have qualified for the European Darts Open at the Host Nation Qualifier. The tournament will be played from Friday, June 21 to Sunday, June 23, 2024 in Leverkusen.

Kurz, who was last active on the European Tour in 2023, defeated Niclas Wierling 6-2 in the first round and then Fabian Herz 6-1. In the last 32, Kurz left Leon Weber behind him 6-4 before knocking Liam Maendl-Lawrance out of the tournament 6-5 to reach the final round. Here, Kurz prevailed 6-3 against Dragutin Horvat.

Blum defeated Chris Massilge (6-4), Christopher Weiss (6-4) and Francesco Marcone (6-4), among others. A 6-5 win over Jarod Becker earned Blum a ticket to the European Darts Open. Blum last appeared on the European Tour stage in 2018. Reaching the second round was his best result here.

Troppmann recently took part in the Baltic Sea Darts Open. Here he met Gian van Veen in the first round, against whom the German lost. Now Troppmann has another chance to show what he can do on the European Tour, after beating Kai Gotthardt 6-3 and Daniel Skoda 6-4 in the qualifier. In the final round, Troppmann defeated Marcel Erba 6-2.

Dückers also only appeared on the European Tour stage at the beginning of the year. He made his debut at the International Darts Open and had the unfortunate luck of having to play Martin Schindler in the first round. He was one size too big for Dückers.

Luke Littler wins 2024 Premier League Darts final with spectacular nine-darter against Luke Humphries

2024 BetMGM Premier League Darts - London

Luke Littler 's incredible rise continued as he hit a stunning nine-dart finish on his way to becoming the Premier League Darts champion on debut.

The 17-year-old threw a perfect leg of darts in a thrilling final against Luke Humphries as he gained revenge for his heartbreaking defeat in the World Championship showpiece in January.

Littler became the first player to hit a nine-dart finish in the Premier League final since Phil Taylor did it twice in 2010 and that surely will not be the only time the teenager emulates 'The Power' over the next few years on the road to stardom.

He was in tears at the end as he became the sport's youngest ever major champion by winning its second biggest tournament on his debut, thrilling a record 14,000 fans at London's O2 Arena with an 11-7 victory over Humphries.

Victory for 'The Nuke' continues an amazing story which began when he burst on to the scene at Alexandra Palace over Christmas and he has since gone on to transcend the sport.

Twelve months ago he was sitting his GCSEs; now he is one of the most famous sports stars in the country. And he is backing it up on the oche, following up titles in the World Series and European Tour with a first major triumph.

He was the best player throughout the tournament, topping the 16-week league phase, having been handed a wildcard entry into the event due to his performance at Ally Pally.

Critics questioned whether he was ready for the challenge and he proved them all wrong.

“One thing I just wanted to say, to all the doubters, 'Hello!',” he said. “I've just picked up this, you're not doubting me any more.”

Humphries said: “I was trying to stick in there, there was a massive breeze on stage all night and it is so hard to deal with.

Luke Littler’s astonishing earnings revealed after Premier League Darts win as teen earns THOUSANDS per day

  • Rob Maul , Associate Sports Features Editor

NINE-DART HERO Luke Littler has earned more than £4,400 per day in prize money since becoming a professional darts player.

The newly-crowned Premier League champion has enjoyed a meteoric rise on the oche over the past six months.

Luke Littler's astonishing earnings have been revealed

Since the start of this year – today is day 145 of 2024 – he has won £648,500 solely from his exceptional exploits throwing darts in competitive action.

For the 17-year-old, who was sitting his GCSEs this time last year, that works out to be about £31,300-a-week since he became a full-time member of the PDC circuit.

These are staggering numbers but Littler is fully justifying that hype, memorably winning the Prem on Thursday night on his debut appearance.

That incredible 11-7 victory over Luke Humphries saw a wonderful nine-dart finish in leg 11, moments after he had come out of the toilet during a TV ad break.

The PDC will now send him a cheque for £275,000 for the sensational success at the O2 Arena after 17 weeks travelling to venues in seven different countries.

This is the second-highest prize on the circuit after the £500,000 jackpot for the World Darts Championship.

He will also receive a £40,000 bonus for his four nightly successes in Belfast, Manchester, Liverpool and Aberdeen.

On the two-year rolling PDC Order of Merit, Littler is up to 25th spot with £303,500 of official ranking tournament cash against his name.

That includes the £200,000 cheque for losing 7-4 to Cool Hand Luke in the World final at Ally Pally.

It also includes £15,000 for reaching the quarter-finals of the UK Open, the FA Cup of Darts, and £15,000 for winning his first-ever ProTour Players Championship in February in Wigan.

When The Nuke overcame Rob Cross 8-7 in the final of the Belgian Darts Open on his debut on the PDC European Tour in March, the winners’ pot for that was £30,000.

On top of that, he was handed £20,000 for triumphing at the Bahrain Darts Masters in January and £10,000 for making the final of the Dutch Darts Masters.

Those are both invitational events – glorified exhibitions really – and the money is not added to his PDC Order of Merit tally.

As it stands, because he is not defending anything from the past two years, Littler will qualify for the 32-player Betfred World Matchplay finals in Blackpool in July.

Inside Littler's massive rise

european tour darts jena

LUKE LITTLER has taken the darts world by storm since exploding onto the scene at the PDC World Championship.

The Nuke reached the final on his Ally Pally debut at just 16 years of age - smashing records along the way.

He has since joined Jude Bellingham on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe list .

And the teenage titan even had to snub an invite from the WWE.

The Sun exclusively revealed that Littler is plotting to create a fitness empire.

He is also cashing in away from the Oche thanks to an Instagram side hustle.

And he's even the face of a brand new cereal.

The wonderkid has now cemented his place among the tungsten elite by winning the Premier League Darts final - and the £275k top prize.

Check out all of our Luke Littler stories here .

The winner of the Phil Taylor Trophy gets £200,000 and in this current form, few would bet against Littler not challenging for that prestigious crown.

The figures mentioned are separate to the commercial contracts he has struck since that epic world champ run.

His team have agreed deals for Littler to be the face of boohooMan clothing company and new cereal brand BEST.

Nationwide launches three new benefits in major boost to millions of customers

Trending on gb news, the world's deadliest infection is back in england - how worried should you be.

Former Premier League champion James Wade believes there are several higher-ranked players on the PDC who are 'seething inside' and 'very jealous' of the attention that Luke Littler is getting.

Littler stunned the world of darts at Alexandra Palace over the festive period as he made history in making it all the way to the final.

The teenager has since proven that his runner-up finish was no fluke after being awarded a wildcard spot in the Premier League as well as picking up trophies on the European Tour, Players Championship and World Series of Darts.

He made even more history on Thursday night in winning the first major of his young career when he defeated world No 1 Luke Humphries to lift the Premier League title.

Luke Littler has taken the world of darts by storm

Humphries was full of praise for Littler after the match with other top-ranked players also coming out in support of the way the 17-year-old has taken to the professional tour.

However, Wade believes there are some players who are 'jealous' of how much attention Littler has been getting.

"I would say it's the higher-ranked players [who are getting annoyed at Littler's success]," Wade told the PA News Agency.

"They're having their noses put out of joint because it's not about them.

"It doesn't matter what any of those other players do at the moment, it's not about them.

"I know what most of them are like, for me it's never been about being known. It's never been about being recognised.

"For some of them it is about that. They'll be affected. It's affecting those higher-ranked players that are out there around the top.

"Because they're not getting the press they would normally get. And they're not getting the recognition.

"I'm not going to name names, but there'll be some out there very, very, very jealous and seething inside.

"And it's quite funny to stand back and watch from a distance."

Luke Littler won the Premier League title on Thursday night

Wade feels Littler is more than deserving of the recognition he's been receiving for his achievements.

"I'm not knocking him because he's a lovely lad and he's doing really, really well," he added.

"But it just shows sometimes that with the weight of social media and the press they can make and break people, and they can fast-track players and they can also make players money that other players have never earned.

Luke Humphries has struggled against Luke Littler since the World Championship final

"And that's exactly what Luke Littler is getting at the moment. He's earning money that no other player has ever earned for the space of time he's been around.

"He's got more attention than anyone I've ever seen. And it's brilliant.

"It's absolutely brilliant and fair play as a young lad with a lot of pressure on his shoulders, because I say all of this, and he's not won much yet.

"And he's got more attention than I've ever seen Michael van Gerwen or Phil Taylor get."

Luke Littler wins Premier League Darts title after nine-dart finish

Seventeen-year-old celebrates triumph with tear in the eye as whirlwind start to career continues.

We are now through the looking glass. We’re over the frontier. We’re not in Kansas any more, Toto. For a 17-year-old kid is now a major darts champion, and it feels totally inevitable, and it still makes absolutely no sense. Whatever  Luke Littler  goes on to achieve in this sport, somehow nothing will ever quite match the sheer tidal wave of shock and wonder he has inspired in his first six months as a professional, an explosion of talent and coolness and colour and attitude and showmanship that is, quite frankly, beyond comprehension.

Littler beat Luke Humphries 11-7 to claim the Premier League title, clinching victory courtesy of a stunning and irresistible surge after the interval that left the world champion and world No 1 gasping. Along the way Littler hit a nine-dart finish – 180, 180, 141 – that brought a crowd of 14,000 to the very brink of rapture. For a player of his tender years, he already instinctively grasps the first rule of big-time darts: give the people what they want.

There was a tear in the eye as he celebrated this win with his family and partner, a rare crack in a facade that thus far has been built on an arch and unshakeable self-assurance. “I’ve been practising really hard,” he said in a small voice. “You could see on the oche I was dead focused, I didn’t want to blink. I can put myself in the hat. I’m a major winner.”

At 9.33pm, the pair emerged from the dressingroom after the break with the score tied at 5-5. The standard had been good not spectacular, a couple of breaks each, Humphries just about hanging on to his own throw and ominously threatening the big acceleration. What followed in the subsequent 12 minutes will be replayed and relived for years by everyone who saw it.

Both players began the 11th leg with 180s. Littler hit another maximum. Humphries bailed out after four perfect darts. Up stepped Littler, nailing the treble-20, an expert adjustment down to the treble-19, and finally – with a racing heart, a dry mouth and an arm of pure fidelity – pinned the double-12 to finish. Somehow, it was the emphatic crowning moment this achievement deserved: not just this win, or the semi-final triumph over Michael Smith that preceded it, but this whole Premier League campaign, a competition that – as many people suggested he might not quite be ready for.

🚨 LITTLER HITS A NINE-DARTER! 🚨 Luke Littler hits a nine-darter in the Premier League final! 🤯 📺 https://t.co/gbUt9q25Jh #PLDarts | Play-Offs | Final pic.twitter.com/MmoJUlGoIi — PDC Darts (@OfficialPDC) May 23, 2024

As laughable as it now seems, this was not an outrageous or deeply unorthodox opinion to hold at the time. Even after Littler’s fairy-tale run to the world championship final, we didn’t really know what this was yet. Moreover, we didn’t really know who he was and the Premier League – a brutal travelling schedule encompassing 17 consecutive Thursdays – is as much a test of character and resolve as of darting ability.

But of course he was ready. In a way, he was born ready. That much has been evident over the course of the past six months, as Littler has taken to the professional circuit as if this was his destiny all along. A first world series title. A first Pro Tour title. A first European Tour title. Top of the Premier League table by a distance. A nine-dart finish to crown each of them.

“I was trying to stick in there,” Humphries said. “But he just played much better. Me and Luke are the two greatest players in the world at the moment. I love playing him. I know I lose a lot, but it’s a great battle.”

This was the third time in five years the Premier League finalists had been debutants in the competition, which gives you some idea of the spectacular flux that has defined the sport of late. Now, though, a more definitive landscape appears to be emerging. These are quite clearly the two best players and even if the predictions of a two-decade rivalry feel a little premature this is certainly how dynasties begin.

Certainly the two men they defeated in the semi-finals feel further away from the summit than ever. Smith, demolished 10-5 by Littler, was never really there, a man vaguely dead behind the eyes, like someone who has been dragged to a nightclub against his will. The seven-time champion Michael van Gerwen was also beaten 10-5. Everything looks hard for Van Gerwen at the moment. The 60s look hard and the 180s elicit a grimace.

He is 35 and the memory of his imperial age is still fresh. It is barely a decade since he stepped on to this very stage, having just lost a world final, and conquered the Premier League at his first attempt. Now, in front of a UK record crowd, the mantle has passed. This is the world Van Gerwen helped to build. But it belongs to others now. – Guardian
