The Flaming Lips Announce 2021-2022 World Tour, Prep ‘Soft Bulletin Companion’ Release

By Claire Shaffer

Claire Shaffer

UPDATE (7/13) : After doing an exclusive vinyl reissue of The Soft Bulletin Companion for Record Store Day, the Flaming Lips will make the 1999 rarity widely available for the first time on CD, digital and vinyl on June 16th. The new release will also include an additional track, an early mix of “1000 ft. Hands.” The Soft Bulletin Companion is available to pre-order and pre-save on streaming services.

The Flaming Lips have announced their return to live music with a world tour, kicking off during the summer of 2021 and running for nearly a year into the summer of 2022.

The band will begin their trek on August 20th at the Ogden Amphitheatre in Ogden, Utah, followed by an August 21st show at Psycho Las Vegas. The Flaming Lips will then tour the Northeast United States and Quebec in November, followed by a more expansive North American tour in the spring of 2022. Finally, the band will play a handful of shows in the U.K. and Ireland from May through July 2022, ending at the Galway International Arts Festival.

Additionally, the Flaming Lips have announced that they’ll release  The Soft Bulletin Companion , a special vinyl reissue of their companion album to 1999’s The Soft Bulletin , on June 12th, 2021, as part of Record Store Day. The original Soft Bulletin Companion was released as a CD alongside The Soft Bulletin more than 20 years ago and contains unreleased material, outtakes, early mixes, B-sides, international bonus tracks, and stereo versions of songs from the Flaming Lips’ previous album Zaireeka . Pressed on double silver vinyl, the special edition of The Soft Bulletin Companion is limited to 16,000 copies worldwide and will be available exclusively at independent record stores.

The Flaming Lips Announce 2022 Tour

By Jazz Monroe

Wayne Coyne

The Flaming Lips have announced a tour of North American and the British Isles. The American Head tour begins with a series of U.S. dates in late 2021, before proceeding into 2022 with transatlantic shows. The dates, which you can see in full below, follow their Oklahoma shows during the pandemic , in which both band and audience stood in protective bubbles for the concert’s duration. Watch a CBS segment on the shows, aired yesterday morning.

The band has also announced the first ever vinyl release of The Soft Bulletin Companion , a promo record of rarities that accompanied The Soft Bulletin in 1999. The pressing onto a silver double-LP is out for Record Store Day on June 12, ahead of a wider release later in the year.

Wayne Coyne and the band recently stepped out of their bubbles and performed “Will You Return / When You Come Down” for  Jimmy Kimmel Live!

flaming lips 2022 tour merch

The Flaming Lips are hitting the road to celebrate their latest album American Head . On Monday (May 3), the band announced international tour dates that begin this August and don't end until July 2022. Wayne Coyne and company plan to hit North America and the UK on their trek, and though there's been no mention of space bubbles for the shows the Lips are bound to make sure everything is safe and comfortable for concert goers.

In addition to the tour dates, the band also revealed a special vinyl re-issue of The Soft Bulletin Companion for the June 12, 2021 Record Store Day drop. The collection of rarities was originally released as a promo CD to correspond with the Lips' 1999 album The Soft Bulletin. It consisted of unreleased material, outtakes, early mixes, B-sides, international bonus tracks, and stereo versions of songs from Zaireeka . The Soft Bulletin Companion will be pressed on double silver vinyl and limited to 16,000 copies, with a wider release to follow later this year.

The Flaming Lips Announce Dates for 2021-22 World Tour

Kicking off in November

The Flaming Lips Announce Dates for 2021-22 World Tour

The Flaming Lips have announced dates for a massive world tour that spans 2021 and 2022, and unlike their last couple of shows , the band will be the only ones in personal bubbles.

As pioneers in human hamster ball technology, the Lips were better positioned than most rockers to weather the pandemic. The group’s recent  bubble concert series created a novel live experience while prioritizing audience safety, but now that COVID-19 vaccines are widely available — at least in North America and Europe — normal touring is set to return.

The Flaming Lips already had a pair of August 2021 dates on the calendar. Now, they’ve added a hefty slate of North American shows that kick off in November at The Fillmore Philadelphia. The band will criss-cross the east coast and midwest through the end of the month before hitting pause until next March. The bulk of the new dates fall in 2022, as the Lips re-launch in the American southwest, where they’ll work eastwards and upwards, reaching Vancouver in May and taking a brief detour down the west coast before ending the tour in the UK in June. Tickets go on sale Friday, May 7th, through the Lips’ website . Afterwards, keep an eye out for deals here here .

35 Record Store Day Titles to Blow Your Stimulus Check On

On June 12th, The Flaming Lips will share  The Soft Bulletin Companion on vinyl for the first time as part of Record Store Day 2021 . Last week, the group returned to the site of their first concert  for a performance on  Jimmy Kimmel Live! , and on April 20th, frontman Wayne Coyne launched his own cannabis brand . This past Friday, the supergroup Beachy Head  featuring Lips drummer Matthew Duckworth shared their debut album .

The Flaming Lips Announce 2021-2022 World Tour

Click here to read the full article on SPIN.

The Flaming Lips are set for a nearly year-long world tour starting summer 2021 and running until mid-2022, and also plan to reissue The Soft Bulletin Companion , on June 12 as part of Record Store Day.

The Soft Bulletin Companion was originally released over 20 years ago as a CD alongside The Soft Bulletin . It contained unreleased material, outtakes, early mixes, B-sides, international bonus tracks, and stereo versions of songs from their prior album Zaireeka .

Those not lucky enough to acquire it the first time will soon be able to own The Soft Bulletin Companion pressed on double silver vinyl. The Flaming Lips are issuing only 16,000 copies worldwide and they will be available exclusively at independent record stores.

Frontman Wayne Coyne put his creative brain to work amidst the pandemic, performing COVID-19-safe concerts in Oklahoma City utilizing the band’s iconic plastic space bubbles. SPIN covers more about these shows here .

While nothing has been mentioned about The Flaming Lips actively incorporating these space bubbles into the upcoming tour dates, the band never disappoints live.

Tickets are currently on sale via The Flaming Lips official site .
