Norway road trip the logistics

When planning a road trip from Stavanger to Bergen, there are a few things you should focus on first: the length of stay, the transportation you will use, and the accommodation you will stay in along the way. In this article, you will find plenty of tips to organize the perfect itinerary.

Best time of the year for a road trip from Stavanger to Bergen

You can follow this itinerary as early as mid-May until approximately mid-October . However, if you want to access all the hikes I have presented in this article, the ideal time to visit is between June and September.

Road trip outline and map

Above, you can view the interactive map I created for this road trip. It includes driving directions, top sights, hike trailheads, and campsites along the way.

You can click the arrow button in the top left corner of the map to uncover the layers. You can switch different layers on and off to make the map more readable. If you click on individual hikes, you will be shown links to my separate hiking guides for each trail.

Getting to Stavanger

Stavanger is the fourth largest city in Norway, with a population of ca. 150 thousand. By world standards, it’s a rather large town than a city. Nevertheless, Stavanger has an international airport and an international ferry terminal.

If you are coming from mainland Europe, you can book an overnight ferry with a sleeping cabin that leaves Hirtsthals in Denmark. The trip takes around 10-12 hours.

If you are coming from overseas, you can book a flight to Stavanger or first fly to Oslo and take an internal flight to Stavanger.

The best way to travel around Norway

Stavanger to Bergen Travel itinerary

Rent a campervan with Motorhome Republic

Norway is meant to be road-tripped in a campervan. The whole infrastructure is perfectly set up for van life enthusiasts. If you want the freedom of travel a campervan offers, check out Motorhome Republic for the best rental deals.

If you would like to know the ins and outs of travelling Norway in a campervan , from finding campsites to the cost to the realities of freedom camping, follow the above link.

TIP: The total kilometre count for this road trip is ca. 900 (560 mi). You will need to give this information when booking a campervan.

Rent a compact car with Discover Cars

If you prefer the comfort of a hotel room, a normal bed, and a daily shower, then renting a compact car will be smarter. The regular-sized cars will also be much more economical in terms of fuel consumption. Check your car rental options with Discover Cars .

TIP : If you are budget-conscious, even though this is a 7-day itinerary, you can easily rent a car for just 5 days. Having a car on this road trip’s first and last day isn’t essential.

Suggested Stavanger to Bergen itinerary: day-by-day breakdown

If you were wondering what famous locations and national parks you will visit on this road trip, here is the summary:

  • Stavanger and Lysefjord
  • Odda and Hardangerfjord
  • Folgefonna National Park
  • Næroyfjord World Heritage Park

TIP: If you want to extend this road trip by another 7-10 days, you can connect it with my Bergen to Bergen itinerary , which focuses on Jostedalsbreen and Jotunheimen National Parks.

Day 1: Stavanger & Preikestolen

  • Distance from Stavanger to Preikestolen: 39 km / 24 mi
  • Driving time : 40 mins

Preikestolen Day Hike 20

We are kicking off the first day of the Stavanger to Bergen road trip with a true icon—the hike to Preikestolen.

Preikestolen, also known as the Pulpit Rock, is a jaw-dropping cliff formation in Norway that makes you question gravity. The only way to see its full glory is by hiking the 8 8-kilometre roundtrip hike to Preikestolen .

Daily buses leave Stavanger at regular intervals and bring keen hikers to the trailhead. The roundtrip hike takes around 4 hours and is moderately graded.

TIP: If you arrive in Stavanger in the afternoon of day 1, it is safer to plan your hike to Preikestolen for the morning of day 2.

Preikestolen Guided Hike

If you prefer to hike accompanied by a local and knowledgeable guide you can book a guided excursion to Preikestolen. The advantage of going on a guided hike is that you will be taken on an off-the-beaten trail, hardly used by the rest of the tourists.

Other things to do in Stavanger

Frogner House Apartments

Fully equipped apartments with coffee machines, electric teapots, and many other amenities. Great location close to the main sights of Stavanger.

Home Again Apartments

The condo hotel provides guests with a patio, a seating area, cable flat-screen TV, a fully equipped kitchen with a fridge and an oven, and a private bathroom with a shower.

Day 2. Ryfylke Scenic Road & Hardanger Scenic Route to Odda

  • Distance from Stavanger to Odda: 212 km / 132 mi
  • Driving time: 3 hours

Odda 2

Day 2 is a true road trip day. You will follow the Ryfylke Scenic Route and then the Hardanger Scenic Route to the little town of Odda, stopping at some popular tourist attractions.

A few of the most notable viewpoints are Låtefossen and Langfoss. The latter requires a small detour. I have marked many of the scenic points worth stopping for on the map.

Latefossen 2

Things to do in Odda

The town of Odda is the gateway to Hardangervidda National Park, the largest in Norway. The park’s most iconic spot is the famous Trolltunga viewpoint. If you haven’t heard of it yet, you must have been living under a rock.

TIP : If you have an extra day and don’t mind hiking in crowds, go to the famous Trolltunga. I skipped the experience and opted for other exciting (and less crowded) hikes during my road trip to Norway.

Best accommodation options around Odda (Night 2)

Trolltunga Camping (Cabins)

Basic guest rooms and cottages are set on Sandvinvatnet Lake between the Folgefonna and Hardangervidda National Parks, a 5-minute from Odda town centre.

Bakkegata – The Blue House

Apartment-type accommodation directly in Odda with fully equipped kitchen facilities. Free WiFi and private parking are included.

Day 3 (morning): Hike to Bondhusvatnet

  • Distance from Odda to Bondhusvatnet trailhead: 20 km / 12.5 mi
  • Driving time: 20 min

Bondhusvatnet 18

It’s time to stretch your legs again. We are kicking off the morning of day 3 with an enjoyable stroll to the beautiful Lake Bondhusvatnet.

Bondhusvatnet is a picturesque glacial lake nestled amidst the stunning landscapes of the Folgefonna National Park.

The hike to Bondhusvatnet is one of the most popular attractions in the Hardanger region of Norway, and for a good reason. It’s neither demanding nor long, but the views-to-effort ratio is hard to beat. If you are a beginner hiker, you should not skip this one.

Day 3 (afternoon): drive to Eidfjord along the Hardanger Scenic Route

  • Distance from Bondhusvatnet to Eidfjord: 92 km / 57 mi
  • Driving time: 1 h 45 min

Eidfjord 2

After hiking to Bondhusvatnet, you will continue your road trip North along the Hardanger Scenic Route.

You will continue the drive along the famous Hardanger Fjord to your next destination – Eidfjord village.

Eidfjord is a popular docking destination for the many cruise ships that sail across the Fjords. For a few hours every day, the sleepy town turns into a vibrant destination full of tourists.

Once you make it to Eidfjord, I highly recommend heading up for a walk to the Hodna viewpoint or swinging on the swing in Ostangen Park, which is right on the shoreline of the fjord.

Best accommodation options around Eidfjord (night 3)

Eidfjord Hytter (huts)

Cute little cottages overlooking Eidfjordvatnet Lake, surrounded by mountain scenery.

Eidfjord Hotel

Freshly renovated Eidfjord Hotel close to the Eidfjord centre. The hotel has bike rentals for guests who want to explore the surrounding area.

Day 4: Vøringfossen& Kjeåsen

Vøringfossen.

  • Distance from Eidfjord to Voringfossen: 17 km / 10.5 mi
  • Driving time : 17 min

Voringfossen 2

Vøringsfossen, a waterfall atop the Måbødalen Valley, is one of the most popular attractions. It entices cruise trip attendees docking in the nearby Eidfjord village for a day, offering breathtaking views from above on the newly built platforms.

For a more immersive adventure, venture through the bottom of Måbødalen Valley and hike to the foot of Vøringsfossen, getting up close and personal with the cascade. Just make sure to wear your waterproof jacket and pants.

If you prefer guided tours, you can join one that leaves from Eidfjord. Check for availability below.

  • Distance from Eidfjord to Kjeåsen: 14 km / 8.7 mi
  • Driving time: 22 min

Kjeasen

Kjeåsen is one of Norway’s many high-alpine farms. It reminds the country of its rich rural heritage. Although no longer operational, its owners still enjoy envy-inducing views overlooking Eidfjord.

Kjeåsen is accessible by car for the less daring. To reach the farm, the journey begins in Simadal, approximately 8 km from Eidfjord/Rv7. The road leading up to Kjeåsen spans 5 km, with 2.5 km of winding road followed by a passage through a narrow tunnel.

It’s worth noting that walking or biking through the tunnel is not permitted. Due to the road’s narrowness, an hourly driving system has been implemented. Traffic ascends to Kjeåsen on the hour and descends from Kjeåsen on the half-hour, ensuring a steady flow of vehicles (source) .

For those who seek adventure, a steep hike with chains and ladders replicates the school route once taken by the farm kids who lived on the farm.

In the afternoon/evening of day 4, head to your next destination – Flåm.

Day 5 (morning): Flåm & Næroyfjord World Heritage Park Attractions

  • Distance from Eidfjord to Flåm: 114 km / 71 mi

Bakka 2

Flåm is renowned for two awesome attractions. The first is the breathtaking journey aboard the Flåmsbana railway, which meanders from the village centre up the mountains to Myrdal, covering a distance of only 20 kilometres. Travelling at a leisurely pace, this scenic train ride allows you to immerse yourself in the stunning vistas of the surrounding mountains.

Cruise on the Aurland and Næroyfjord

The second highlight is the cruise along Næroyfjord, Southern Norway’s narrowest and most dramatic fjord. What sets this cruise apart is its use of a cutting-edge, zero-emission boat powered by renewable energy sources. When it comes down to sustainable tourism, Norway takes the lead.

Visit Bakka and Undredal villages

See true Norway and its slow-paced life by visiting the two villages near Flåm. Bakka, which means ‘on the bank’, was built right on the shoreline of Næroyfjord. You can rent a kayak here and go kayaking right on the Fjord.

Undredal lies right on Aurlandsfjord and is known for its brown cheese production. For hundreds of years, cheese production has remained unchanged and contributes greatly to the local economy of Undredal, which has a tiny population of only 100 people.

Day 5 (afternoon): Hike to Prest

  • Distance from Flåm to Prest trailhead: 19 km / 11.8
  • Driving time: 30 min

Prest Norway

Make the most of the extended daylight during the Scandinavian summer and embark on an afternoon trek to Prest. Owing to its location and the interplay of sunlight with the majestic mountains, the hike to Prest is particularly enchanting during the afternoon hours.

Upon reaching the summit, you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramas of the Aurlandsfjord, Flåm, and the neighbouring town of Aurland. The hike itself typically takes around 3-4 hours to accomplish.

Sunset at Stegastein Viewpoint

Stegastein Viewpoint

Conclude the 5th day of your Stavanger to Bergen road trip with a beautiful sunset at the Stegastein viewpoint. This exquisitely crafted platform stretches from the mountainside, soaring 600 meters above the Aurlandsfjord.

Conveniently situated along the road leading to the Prest trailhead, the Stegastein viewpoint presents the perfect opportunity to maximize your time and accomplish two experiences in one. After the hike, stop at the viewpoint and bask in the golden sunlight.

Day 6: Hike in the Næroyfjord World Heritage Park

Option 1: aurlandsdalen.

  • Distance from Flåm to Aurlandsdalen trailhead: 40 km / 25 mi
  • Driving time: 40 min

Aurlandsdalen Day Hike 21

Aurlandsdalen is a renowned multi-day trek in Norway. The most popular section between the alpine mountain station Østerbo and the charming valley settlement of Vassbygdi can be done in a single day.

The hike through Aurlandsdalen is like a journey into prehistoric times. With deep gorges, green vegetation, and waterfalls flowing down the mountain cliffs, I was half expecting a dinosaur to emerge from around the corner.

I stumbled upon the Aurlandsdalen hike while searching for a suitable trail to enjoy with my parents, who were visiting me. Although more challenging than anticipated, it provided a less strenuous alternative to Bakkanosi.

Option 2: Bakkanosi

  • Distance from Flåm to Bakkanosi trailhead: 32 km / 20 mi

Bakkanosi Day Hike Norway 9

For an unparalleled vantage point of Næroyfjord, look no further than the hike to the summit of Bakkanosi . Gaining popularity, this trail has earned its place as one of the most sought-after hikes in the Fjord region of Norway .

The journey to the summit isn’t overly demanding, with a roundtrip distance of 17.5 kilometres (11 miles) and a steady elevation gain of 940 meters (3000 ft). This was my first solo hiking experience in Norway (with my dog in tow). We stayed alone in a tent near the summit and had the perfect sunrise the next morning.

Best accommodation options around Flåm (nights 4 & 5)

Best location.

Flamsbrygga Hotel

It has a very cosy atmosphere and wood-panelled rooms. Reserve a room with a balcony overlooking the Fjord and watch the cruise ships and trains come and go from the terminal.

Wangen Apartments Aurland

These are beautiful, modern apartments with a Scandinavian feel. Looking through the windows, you will feel like you are floating on the fjord.

Day 7: Bergen

  • Distance from Flåm to Bergen: 167 km / 104 mi
  • Driving time: 2 h 30 min

Bergen

You made it to the end of your road trip. You can leave Flåm on the afternoon of day 6 and stay the night in Bergen, then spend the next day exploring the city.

Bergen is the second-largest city in Norway. Because of its rainy weather, raincoats are considered formal attire.

The two most popular places in the city are the Bryggen, a series of colourful buildings lining the Vågen harbour (pictured above), and the Ulriken Cable Car, which takes you high above the city and offers nice views over Bergen.

My favourite way to explore cities is by joining a walking tour run by a local. You can do that in Bergen too.

A great hotel in a top location with a rooftop terrace overlooking the city. All top sightseeing spots are within walking distance of the hotel.

How do we shorten this Stavanger to Bergen itinerary to 5 days?

You don’t have a whole week to spend in Norway? That’s ok. Here are a couple of options to shorten your trip:

  • Option 1: Stay 1 day shorter in Flåm and don’t spend the day in Bergen. This will save you 2 days.
  • Option 2: Skip Eidfjord and drive from Odda straight to Flåm. This will save you a couple of nights.

10-day Norway Road Trip Itinerary For Adventure Seekers (Starting And Ending in Ålesund)

  • May 9, 2023

This is an amazing guide. Curious what if any of these activities might be inaccessible if traveling in late May? Thank you!

Hi Colin. Thanks for the feedback. Some high altitude hikes might still have snow, but most activities are already accessible at the end of May. if one is closed, there is another one you can replace it with. Whether you travel at the end of May or mid-Summer you don’t have a guarantee something will be doable or not. The weather in Norway can be difficult.

Getting from Stavanger to Bergen

Is your next destination in Western Norway this summer? Torn between Stavanger or Bergen and would love to actually visit both?

Not a problem, we got your back! Read on for a detailed overview of how you can get from Stavanger to Bergen – whether you’ll be driving your own car or use public transport.

Stavenger to Bergen

There’s never a summer that Western Norway is not filled with thousands of tourists who came either via cruise ship or their own transport. And Stavanger and Bergen are two of the most visited cities in this region. Both of these places have lots to offer and can easily keep you busy for 2-3 days.

Driving is, of course, the easiest and maybe the most convenient way to get from Stavanger to Bergen and also around Western Norway, but it’s not the only option just in case you’re not comfortable driving abroad.

Traveling by car may be easy, whether you’re driving your own or renting one when you get to Norway. But here’s the catch, with all the costs that go along with it, this isn’t necessarily the cheapest option. But what are these costs you ask?

  • Fuel expenses
  • Costs for ferries
  • Parking fees

Still think that this is the best option? Here’s a guide on how it can be an easy and smooth journey. It’s relatively easy, just follow the national road E39. However, there are 2 fjords along the way, which means you have to factor in two ferries as well.

The first one that goes between Mortavika and Arsvågen ferry costs range from 36 NOK – 40 NOK for the passengers and 95 NOK – 120 NOK for standard cars. While the second ferry which is in between Sandvikvåg and Halhjem costs from 50 NOK – 60 NOK for the passenger and 160 NOK – 190 NOK for a standard car.

You may check the timetable here to help you schedule your time travel.

Aside from the cost of the ferries, you will also have to pay for road tolls by registering to AutoPass . Also, check this post out to learn more about the road tolls.

** Pro Tip: Driving an electric car will save you from paying road tolls (at least for now) and would only cost half the price of the ferry tickets.

** Rentals: And if you’re renting a car, you don’t have to worry about all of these costs during the trip as the rental provider bills the cost after the trip. Bear in mind that this option will cost you much higher.

The drive from Stavanger to Bergen takes approximately 5 hours, including the 25 minutes you spend on the first ferry and 40 minutes on the second. Despite the costs and the hassle, this option gives you the chance to take breaks especially when you’re on the ferries.

The bus journey takes approximately five and a half hours and follows the same route as the car option. The ferry tickets are already included in the bus fare, so that’s always a bonus. The bus company on this route is Kystbussen and you should book the tickets in advance. This allows you to reserve a seat and take advantage of the best price too (It could save you  up to 15%)

Maybe the cheapest option, if you don’t have your own car, is taking the direct ferry with Fjordline. They offer daily departures from Hirtshals (in Denmark) to Bergen, via Stavanger. Not only is this is easiest route, you get to enjoy the ride and views at the same time. Plus, there is a restaurant and cafe on board, so you can enjoy your time even more!

The only downside to this option is the ferry terminal. It is located approximately 10km outside Stavanger, so a bit of a pain to get to. Of course, you can take the bus (number 2) which is cheap but painful – you have to walk the last 20 minutes. The best option is the Fjordline bus they offer which goes directly to the terminal, but costs extra of course!

What about Trains, Planes, and Hitchhiking?

Unfortunately, there are no train lines from Stavanger going to Bergen. As you might already know, Norway is not a train-loving nation!

You can certainly take the plane if you must,  but this is not something I would normally do for such a short hop flight.

However, if you do wish to go by plane, you have to consider that flight time and all the related shenanigans before departure as well as getting to and from both airports.

Last but not the least, hitchhiking is always be an option. Although it’s not something I’ve tried first-hand, I’ve heard a lot of different experiences from people who have tried it, some are fun, while some are not. But I guess if you really want to try out this option, you should be strategic about it – meaning, you should stand somewhere along the way to Bergen.

From Stavanger to Bergen

Through fjords via combined effort of bus and ferries.

This Norwegian route is spectacular: it runs through a marvelous landscape, which changes its character for several times during the journey. Another pleasant matter here is that it entertains you with switching from bus to a ferry and back — so you can hardly get bored, even if you are insensitive to the beauty of nature (but I am pretty sure, you are not).

Find cheap hotels in Stavanger

Leaving Stavanger

A sunny morning. The time, which can be called early only by the standards of a devoted night owl. It’s about 10 o’clock, and I am at the Stavanger Byterminalen (city bus terminal). It is a facility of a decent size, with one waiting hall, a supermarket and a small shop with an option to get hot drinks and simple food to go.

Bus terminal in Stavanger

A bus to Bergen is in its place, welcoming passengers with an opened door and ready to store as many suitcases as needed in a huge luggage space.

Kystbussen bus in Stvanger

There is no number of a seat in my ticket, so I can choose any of the unoccupied ones. I ask the driver (a personable man who speaks English) which side he recommends in terms of view and sunlight. He answers that the bright light will get me anyway: the road is curvy, and there are lots of turns. However, he also tells me that the scenery is great regardless of the observation point. Satisfied with this information, I start picking a place.

Inside the Kystbussen bus

My choice falls near the window (like there was any doubt!). The chair is soft and comfortable. It is equipped with a net for small (and rather flat) things, a clothes hook and a safety belt. Also, I am more than happy to spot a real, properly working USB port — one of the most important things in any travel, at least as the battery of my phone believes.

Kystbussen USB plug on seat

It’s 10:15. The bus door closes. The driver puts a foot on the accelerator. The departure happens right on schedule. I am comfortable and ready to roll.

Meeting the route

The transport line I am about to explore is called Kystbussen. This name can be translated as Coastal Bus, which is quite self-explanatory. The distance between Stavanger and Bergen is not that long - about 200 kilometers, but the path is interestingly complicated (which is a good thing when it comes to exciting travel experience of a tourist).

Stavanger to Bergen route map for Kystbussen bus

The route includes two ferries: from Mortavika to Arsvågen and from Sandvikvåg to Halhjem. They both are included in the ticket price. There are a number of rides every day, and some of them make a tiny detour with stops in Håvik and Haugesund . It affects the duration of the trip, but in my case the bus goes through Aksdal, so the voyage lasts less than five hours.

Buy tickets for Kystbussen

Enjoying the ride

There is a pair of tunnels at the beginning of this trip. They both are really long, and we ride through each of them for some minutes. This part offers just darkness and some oncoming cars as an attraction. But I like to think of it as a kind of preparation, as if the route prefers not to hit a traveler with all its glory at once. Fine with me, I like to dive into the mood of this journey gradually.

Stavanger to Bergen tunnel

Then, pastures come to the scene. The bus moves alongside green hills, full of cows and sheep. Mostly sheep. There are hundreds of them on the left. The right side, at the same time, shows groups of white horses — on a water surface (we will take a proper look at it a bit later).

Fields and cattle

After some time, we reach Mortavika. Here, the first ferry of this trip is ready to take our bus on board, together with a number of private cars and other vehicles.

Ferry on the route from Stavanger to Bergen

The bus stops and stays on the lower deck, while all the passengers exit it and move to the upper levels of the ferry.

Kystbussen on a ferry

The ship leaves the pier. It is exciting to step off the firm ground and continue to move on water.

Now, travelers have about a half an hour to entertain themselves during this extra short cruise. Some of them prefer to relax in seats and look outside. Others choose to have some food and drinks at the dining zone. Also, you can spend some time on the open deck — if you feel wind-proof enough — or check out a tiny exhibition of sea-themed children drawings.

Passangers on the ferry

Then, comes the time to get back on wheels. I am, together with other travelers, in the bus again. The ride continues on the ground. At this part of the route I can see much more water through my window. And sheep are still in sight.

Water and Sheeps in Norway

During the next couple of hours, the landscape constantly changes its type, shapes and colors. From coastlines to forests, from fields to cliffs, from blue to yellow. Various boats and small wooden houses appear now and then. There are lots of rocks, there are lots of trees, there is a lot to see in general. The driver was right, the view is fascinating on both sides of the road.

Landscape along the route Stavanger to Bergen

The road itself is mostly narrow and snaky. From time to time bus goes through tunnels (yes, them again!) and over bridges (there is a fair amount of those too). Speaking of the latter, at some point we reach a pretty big one. I spot the sign that says this bridge is 1077 meters long.

A long bridge

Although all these views from the coast are impressive, fjords add even more and come into action as an encore. The bus arrives in Sandvikvåg and takes a spot on board of yet another ferry.

The second ferry on the route Stavanger to Bergen

We left behind a mountain of big wind turbines and enter the second water segment of the trip. It lasts, like the previous one, for 30 minutes.

The deal is the same here: the bus is with cars, people are among other people. The weather is sunny and warm, so I spend most of the time on the open deck. However, the wind is predictably strong, and most of the passengers prefer to stay inside.

On deck of the ferry

As you have already guessed, after that I get back to the bus, and it continues to move on land. The area here is populated quite densely, so landscape changes again: now it introduces cars, buildings and other numerous marks of civilization. Though, beautiful elements of nature are still out there.

Nature of Norway

This kind of view is the last in this journey. The adventure comes to an end shortly. We enter the wonderful city of Bergen.

Arriving in Bergen

Before the bus finally stops, it gives all the passengers a kind of a sightseeing tour of Bergen. We go through a part of the city on our way to the Bergen busstasjon (Bus Station).

Houses in bergen

The terminal for buses here is considerably bigger than in Stavanger (which is not surprising — Bergen is the second largest city in Norway). Yet, as most of the places of this kind, it is strictly functional and traditionally looks like a set of concrete blocks.

Bus station in Bergen with Kystbussen bus

The good thing is that the city itself is interesting and beautiful. It has big and small streets, mountains and flat areas, a charming difference in elevation (giving you an ability to do some exercises just by walking), water bodies of different shapes and parks of various sizes. I especially like tiny charming yards and uncrowded lanes.

In order to save this text from excessive wordiness, I’ll try to be brief for a change. So, in short, I urge you to visit Bergen.

Special mention

I usually tell about all the hotels I stay in between my trips. This time is no exception, but I would like to place an emphasis here. Zander K hotel deserves it: apart from all the needful things, comfort, service, convenient location and free bicycles (believe this or not!), it offers an unusual style and distinctive, modernism-inspired design. In other words, totally recommended - not only on a practical, but also on the aesthetical side!

Finalizing this

The only thing my trip from Stavanger to Bergen misses is a train (trains are the best, we all know that). Except for this sad drawback, everything is great. I’ve already praised both of the cities (you can find some more words about Stavanger here ), and I also suggest the route between them. The ride is far from being tiring: bus-to-ferry changes allow any traveler not to get stuck in their seat and to get limbered up. If you have an opportunity to take this trip - be sure to do this! Here are the links that will help you with this: Airbnb accommodation , hotels in Stavanger , hotels in Bergen , ticket for the Kystbussen and train tickets for Norway .

Beautiful mountains and deep fjords make an unbeatable Norwegian combination. Travel with Fjord Line between Bergen and Stavanger! Book your ticket here.

The Fjord Line ships, MS Stavangerfjord and MS Bergensfjord, travel daily from Bergen to Stavanger through exceptionally beautiful natural landscapes.

Sailing directly from the Port of Bergen in the city centre, Fløyen, Ulriken and the other city mountains along the fjord provide a bewitching backdrop as we make our way to beautiful Haugalandet, where the distance between the open sea to islets, archipelagos and deep fjords is minimal.

The ship sails in inshore waters for the entire voyage, so you’re never far from natural landscapes or landmarks. For example, when sailing from Bergen you can see Askøybroen (Askøy Bridge) and Sotrabrua (Sotra Bridge), two gigantic suspension bridges that connect the mainland to the two Hordaland islands. Both bridges are over one kilometre in length and create a dramatic sight from the deck at the bow of the ship or from the large panoramic windows on board.

And be prepared for Karmsund bru (Karmsund Bridge) too. This bridge, connecting Karmøy and Haugesund, illustrates what is so wonderful and unique about voyages in Western Norway. It’s not possible to get a closer mix of nature and man-made structure. Karmsund Bridge’s characteristic arch makes it popular with photographers, so have your camera ready!

On board, you can enjoy good food and recharge your batteries before arriving at the historic and dynamic city of Stavanger. Fjord Line has menus and restaurants to cater for all tastes. For those that like a little bit of everything, the Commander Buffet restaurant, which has daily breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, is a good option. As it’s a buffet, you can pick and mix to your heart’s content. If you’d prefer a romantic à la carte dinner, then the Grieg Brasserie is the place for you. Here, you can savour various tasty dishes composed of top-quality raw ingredients. Or for something quick and easy, why not try the Oasis Garden Café.

The ships are also equipped with a comfortable lounge where, for an additional fee, you can enjoy the sea view in a comfortable seat and help yourself to hot and cold drinks throughout the journey. Here you have access to wifi and power sockets and it is possible to order lunch and dinner from a separate menu.

For a round trip from either Bergen or Stavanger, an interesting alternative is travelling back on Kystbussen (the coastal bus). With this option, we would recommend a minimum one-night stay in Bergen or Stavanger. The bus takes about five hours and can be booked online here.

After arriving in Stavanger, the ship continues on to Hirtshals in Denmark and then to Kristiansand. Trips to Denmark, can be booked at fjordline.com
