fuji shizuoka tourist pass

For hundreds of years, the Tokaido highway connecting Tokyo and Kyoto has flourished as an essential transportation route. Today the Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train follows roughly the same route. It takes about one hour to travel from Tokyo to Shizuoka, and one-and-a-half hours from Shizuoka to Kyoto. If you step off the Shinkansen at Shizuoka, you can enjoy the magnificent view of Mt. Fuji and experience a slower pace of Japanese life unlike anything in the major metropolitan regions. Shizuoka Prefecture, which stretches from east to west, can be divided into the Izu region, which is centered on the Izu Peninsula and its majestic nature; the Fuji region spreading out at the foot of Mt. Fuji; the central region, which extends from Shizuoka City to the unexplored areas of Oku-oi; and the western region, which is centered on Hamamatsu City and Lake Hamana. Be sure to check out the features of each region and the main sightseeing attractions for your trip.

Want to climb Mount Fuji this summer? Expect new fees and climbing limits

Also, newly erected screen blocks most popular viewpoint for tourists taking photos.

A worker erects a barrier along a street while other people gather to take photos.

Social Sharing

Those who want to climb one of the most popular trails on Japan's iconic Mount Fuji will have to book a slot and pay a fee as crowds, littering and climbers who try to rush too fast to the summit cause safety and conservation concerns at the picturesque stratovolcano.

The new rules for the climbing season, from July 1 to Sept. 10, apply for those hiking the Yoshida Trail on the Yamanashi side of the 3,776 metre-high mountain that was designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2013.

Only 4,000 climbers will be allowed to enter the trail per day for a hiking fee of 2,000 yen (about $24 Cdn). Of those slots, 3,000 will be available for online booking and the remaining 1,000 can be booked in person on the day of the climb, Yamanashi prefecture said in a statement via the Foreign Press Center of Japan on Monday. Hikers also have an option of donating an additional 1,000 yen (about $12 Cdn) for conservation.

Climbers can book their slots via the Mount Fuji Climbing website, which is jointly run by the Environment Ministry and the mountain's two home prefectures, Yamanashi and Shizuoka.

Mount Fuji is divided into 10 stations, and there are four "5th stations" halfway up the mountain from where the Yoshida, Fujinomiya, Subashiri, and Gotemba trails start to the top.

A worker installs a barrier to block the sight of Japan's Mount Fuji.

Under the new system, climbers must choose between a day hike or an overnight stay at the several available huts along the trail. The day of their climb, they are given a QR code to be scanned at the 5th station. Those who have not booked an overnight hut will be sent back down and not allowed to climb between 4 p.m. and 3 a.m., mainly to stop "bullet climbing," or rushing to the summit without adequate rest, which authorities are worried puts lives at risk.

Littering a major concern

A symbol of Japan, the mountain called "Fujisan" used to be a place of pilgrimage. Today, it especially attracts hikers who climb to the summit to see the sunrise. But the tonnes of trash that's left behind, including plastic bottles, food and even clothes, have become a major concern.

In a statement, Yamanashi Gov. Kotaro Nagasaki thanked people for their understanding and co-operation in helping conserve Mount Fuji.

Tourists take photos of Mount Fuji in the background.

Shizuoka prefecture, southwest of Mount Fuji, where climbers can also access the mountain, has sought a voluntary 1,000-yen ($8.72 Cdn) fee per climber since 2014 and is considering additional ways to balance tourism and environmental protection.

The number of Mount Fuji climbers during the season in 2023 totalled 221,322, according to the Environment Ministry. That is close to the pre-pandemic level and officials expect more visitors this year.

Cracking down on social media photos

The town of Fujikawaguchiko completed construction of a large black screen on Tuesday to block tourists from taking photos at the most popular view of Fuji, across the street from a convenience store.

Tourists were crowding into the area to take photos with the mountain as a backdrop, a social media phenomenon known as "Mount Fuji Lawson" that has disrupted business, traffic and local life.

Overtourism has also become a growing issue at other popular tourist destinations such as Kyoto and Kamakura as foreign visitors have flocked to Japan in droves since the coronavirus pandemic restrictions were lifted, in part due to the weaker yen.

Last year, Japan had more than 25 million visitors, and the figures in 2024 are expected to surpass nearly 32 million, a record from 2019, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization.

Japan’s Mount Fuji Introduces Paid Reservations for Climbers

A s the summer climbing season approaches, local authorities in Japan have announced a new entry fee and daily visitor cap for their popular trail up Mount Fuji in an attempt to reduce congestion around the iconic mountain and curb the damaging effects of overtourism.

The paid reservation system, officially unveiled on Monday , kicks in for those wishing to ascend Mount Fuji between July 1 and September 10, and slots can be booked online starting May 20.

A Yamanashi prefecture government official told CNN in 2023 that “overtourism—and all the subsequent consequences like rubbish, rising CO2 emissions and reckless hikers—is the biggest problem facing Mount Fuji.”

A booking, which costs 2,000 Yen (or about $13), covers entrance to the Yoshida Trail, which is used by about 60% of visitors and is one of four entrances to the mountain. A gate will be installed at the entrance of the fifth station of the Yoshida trail, which will only open from 3 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Authorities said the gate closures will help to address the problem of overcrowding, as many climbers want to go up Mount Fuji to witness sunrise at the summit and descend quickly afterward. Hikers who stay in mountain huts in the area will be allowed to go through the gate beyond its limited hours.

Online reservations must be made at least a day in advance of a planned hike, and there is a 4,000-person daily cap on the number of people who can go up Mount Fuji through Yoshida. Climbers will need to show a QR code to verify their booking, but at least 1,000 of those slots may be booked on site, according to local news outlet Kyodo .

Before the new system, visitors were asked to pay a voluntary fee of 1,000 Yen to help fund the operation of certain facilities like first aid stations and portable toilets. The additional mandatory fee is expected to cover maintenance expenses at the gate and trail, support for foreigner hikers, and disaster response services.

Shizuoka prefecture, which oversees the three other Mount Fuji trails, will not collect additional fees on top of those already in place for conservation efforts but will also launch a pre-registration system to manage entry into the mountain grounds.

Designated a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) heritage site since 2013, the 3,776-m. tall Mount Fuji is a major tourist attraction that seems to get more popular every year. The Yoshida Trail’s fifth station—a spot some 2,300 m. above sea level that functions as the hub for tourists visiting the mountain—reportedly recorded more than 5 million visitors in 2019, double what it recorded in 2012. Data from Japan’s Ministry of Environment shows that since 2014, except during the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of visitors to Mount Fuji during the hiking season from July to September has been consistently above 200,000.

But overtourism has become a major problem. Mount Fuji’s peak has been crowded, its trails littered with waste , and anecdotes of inappropriate behavior like setting up campfires in an already crowded area as well as wearing sandals and shorts for the hike are becoming increasingly common. Communities around the mountain have been dealing with similar concerns: in April, also frustrated by overtourism, authorities in a nearby town decided to block a popular view of the mountain’s summit.

[Yoshida Trail] FAQ <General Question>

fuji shizuoka tourist pass

Q: Where will the gates be installed? - A gate will be installed at the entrance of the fifth station of the Yoshida Trail, as shown on the left. Q: Why are the gates closed during the night (from 4pm until 3am)?  -Many climbers ascending Mt. Fuji want to witness the sunrise at the summit, meaning many will make the climb during the night, resulting in overcrowding and climbers descending the mountain without rest.(※) Therefore, restrictions on passage have been put in place at a specific time period to tackle this situation. ※ The causes of altitude sickness and hypothermia were due to climbers ascending at night without taking a break at the lodging facilities, aiming to reach the summit in time for sunrise. Q: Can I pay the hiking fee via credit card, cashless payment or QR code? - Yes, payment for the hiking fee and the Mt. Fuji conservation donation can be made using credit card, cashless payment or QR code. However, we recommend carrying some cash on hand as cashless payment may be difficult during extreme weather conditions.

[Yoshida Trail] FAQ <Yoshida trail gate entrance reservation system>

Q: Are the reservations for both admission through the trail gates and the mountain huts?

- The reservations are booked separately.

Q: If I make a reservation for the mountain huts, do I have to book a reservation to pass through the trail gates too?

- If you have mountain hut reservations, you can book online or pay for the hiking fee on the day of the climb.

Q: If I don’t have mountain hut reservations, does that I mean I can’t climb Mt. Fuji?

-You can climb Mt. Fuji even without mountain hut reservations. However, climbers are subject to restrictions and cannot climb during the hours between 4pm until 3am. If the number of climbers passing through the trail gate exceeds the daily limit of 4,000 people, access between the fifth station and the summit will be restricted.

Q: If I have made reservations for passage through the trail gates, can I continue climbing even after 4pm?

-Only climbers with mountain hut reservations are allowed to pass through the gate after 4pm. However, as a general rule we encourage those with mountain hut reservations to pass through the gate at the fifth station before the restricted hours begin to ensure safe climbing.

Q: Should those with mountain hut reservations also make prior bookings to pass through the gate?  Are there any advantages?

-As payment is complete at the time of reservation, the process of passing through the gates would be smoother as there is a separate line for those who have made prior reservations, who will need to show their QR code for confirmation. In addition, it is possible to make a group reservation of up to 100 people.

Q: If I want to cancel or change my reservation after payment has been complete, will I be refunded?

- Once payment is complete, reservations are non-refundable, including changes or cancellations due to personal reasons. However, in the event of unforeseen circumstances on our end and you were unable to pass through the gate, refunds will be issued. There is no further action needed on your end after cancelling a reservation.

※ Additionally, if you wish to change the date of the climb, please cancel your reservation, and make a new one, a refund will not be issued.

Q: Could I make reservations over the phone?

-Reservations can only be made on our website.

Q: How many days in a year does the number of climbers exceed 4,000 during climbing season?

-Excluding the years 2020-2022 when the climbing season was closed due to covid-19, the actual figure is as follows:

2017: 17 days               2018: 12 days         2019: 10 days         2023: 5 days

Overtourism brings headaches for hosts of Mt. Fuji

As the number of inbound visitors surges in Japan, so too does the number of people wanting to climb the country's highest peak. But those living near Mount Fuji say the influx has become unsustainable, and municipal authorities are taking measures to address it.

When an image of Mount Fuji appearing to sit on top of a convenience store went viral, it triggered a rush of tourists to the town of Fujikawaguchiko where they hoped to recreate the shot.

Anyone heading there now, though, is in for disappointment after officials erected a mesh screen that blocks the view.

Authorities took the decision to conceal the photo op after complaints from locals about visitors leaving trash and ignoring traffic rules.

fuji shizuoka tourist pass

Officials first tried deploying security guards, but that failed to stop tourists jaywalking on busy roads or trespassing onto private property in the hunt for the best angle to shoot Mt. Fuji.

On May 21, they completed construction of a black mesh screen 20 meters long and 2.5 meters high.

Local reactions to the new screen are divided. One person described it as an eyesore, while another said it may not be ideal but the authorities probably had no other options left.

The manager of a Japanese confectionery store near the screen says she understands the decision but wishes officials could have come up with another idea. She says about 80 percent of the people coming to her shop were foreign tourists and they've made the area lively.

More than a mountain

fuji shizuoka tourist pass

Japan's highest mountain is considered a sacred place in the Shinto religion. An 8th-century collection of poems called Manyoshu describes the mountain as a god. And that's one reason locals are frustrated to see visitors littering it with trash.

Osano Shoichi, the head of a local tourism association, runs a souvenir shop on the Yamanashi side of Mount Fuji.

Though his business benefits from the surge in visitor numbers, he expresses frustration at the way the tourists treat the mountain.

He says his association is telling people to take their garbage home with them but the request is often ignored.

And he says he's heard stories of people falling asleep from exhaustion on the mountain trails, or seeking warmth in the mountain hut toilets and staying there.

Climbing fee debuts summer 2024

When Mount Fuji's climbing season opens in July, hikers using the most popular trail will encounter a new gate, shorter entry times and a higher fee.

The Yoshida trail, beginning in Yamanashi Prefecture, is considered the most accessible and most suitable for novices. Until now, climbers have been asked to make a donation of 1,000 yen for the upkeep of the mountain. From this year, they will be required to make a reservation and pay a fee of 2,000 yen (about 13 dollars).

A new entrance gate will be closed from 4 p.m. to 3 a.m., and the number of climbers will be capped at 4,000 per day. Anyone with a reservation to rest in a mountain hut will be permitted to enter outside those hours.

The intention is to reduce the number of people trying to do what's called "bullet climbing," which involves heading to the summit for the sunrise without taking a rest. Officials say that leads to congestion, and can make people more susceptible to altitude sickness and hypothermia.

fuji shizuoka tourist pass

Climbing from Shizuoka

Climbers using the other three trails, all on the Shizuoka Prefecture side, will still be asked only for a donation of 1,000 yen. Shizuoka authorities there say they cannot implement mandatory fees because the trails on that side pass through national land.
