Pete, Your Tour Guide

I grew up in Albany,  South West of Western Australia. We lived in Perth for many years and travelled by road around Australia extensively, as a professional driver, clocking up literally hundreds of thousands of kilometres. Visiting Broome for the first time in 1975 for the Shinju Matsuri Festival of the Pearl and have returned every year since then.

I love the long drives experienced in the northern parts of Australia. We moved to Cairns and lived there for 6 years and finally settled in Broome in 2011 and I won’t budge from here, just love the lifestyle.

The Kimberley has a true mystique that captures you.

I love my job, showing my guests this magical part of the Kimberley. I have a genuine passion for the culture and history that has made Broome what it is today. Let me show you the best of Broome, learn about the Pearling history, Aboriginal culture and Asian influence that has made Broome one of the most multi-cultural towns in Australia…..

14 of the most incredible Broome tours

Kassia Byrnes

Native Content Editor

13 July 2023

Time

Drag yourself away from the beach for the day on a Broome tour and you’ll be rewarded with some truly amazing experiences.

This seaside country town might be small, but it has a mighty history and even mightier modern-day experiences. To really understand how it came to be – from its multi-cultural food scene to its wild pearling history – these Broome tours are a must.

Be sure to contact tour providers before you go, as tours can be very dependent on the weather and the seasons, thanks to rapidly changing tides.

1. Broome And Around Tours

First things first, get situated and familiar with Broome on a Panoramic Town Bus Tour with Broome and Around Tours. Do this right at the start of your trip to get all the local knowledge on where to eat, where to find local art, secret swimming spots and a good overview of the fascinating and brutal history of Broome.

2. Mabu Buru Broome Aboriginal Tours

Your second stop should be Mabu Buru Broome Aboriginal Tours for the Cable Beach Cultural Talk with local Yawuru, Karrajarri, Nyul Nyul, Bardi man, Johani. Meet on the famous Cable Beach where he will walk you through some local Indigenous history and customs, a song performance, and he’ll even help you find the hidden-in-plain-sight dinosaur footprints left in the rocks. More than a tour, however, this is a conversation during which Johani creates a safe space for asking, learning and sharing.

3. Red Sun Camels

Have you even been to Broome if you didn’t ride a camel? It may be an iconic tourist activity, but it’s also a whole lot of fun. There are multiple tour providers who will line up along the beach in the mornings and at sunset, but our pick is Red Sun Camels for their friendly staff, relaxing atmosphere and camels that are far less smelly than some others (trust me on this one).

4. Moontide Distillery Tour

While there are a million gorgeous views to stop at on tours around Broome, beverage aficionados will be pleased to know Moontide Distillery is leading the way in craft liquor, even boasting a few awards for their unique gin flavours – like The Pearler’s Gin, crafted with actual oyster mantle. Take a tour to see the behind-the-scenes action, or just have a tasting with nibbles.

5. Matso’s Brewery Tour

Speaking of craft brews, Matso’s Mango Beer is a staple on the taps of pubs around Western Australia, and it all started in Broome. A brewery and a restaurant, you can book in for a tour and then sit down to an award-winning lunch.

6. Broome Tours Mudcrabbing Adventure

To brag about catching your own dinner, you can join a Mud Crabbing Adventure with Broome Tours. Follow your guide through the mangroves of Roebuck Bay on a hunt for the prized Kimberley Mud Crab, then cook up your catch for the freshest of seafood lunches. Be prepared to get dirty as you leave the catamaran and wade in shallow water, and also be aware that this tour is weather dependent.

7. Broome Tours Sunset Cruise

Join Broome Tours for the mud crabbing, but stay for a Sunset Cruise along Cable Beach to catch the shoreline from a different perspective. Broome subsets have not been overhyped, and an unforgettable way to experience it is with a beverage in hand, being served snacks, while sitting on the back of a 42-foot catamaran.

The crew know many Broome tours require concentration, so they’re here to bring the chill vibes and relaxed fun – you can even go swimming in a boom net off the back of the boat (April to early October).

8. Salty Plum Social

Thanks to the unique immigration history in Broome, it’s an unexpected foodie haven. Locals are more than happy to offer up their favourites, but a Small Bar Walking Tour of Broome’s historic Chinatown with Salty Plum Social is the perfect way to hit all the best spots in one afternoon.

Eat, drink, walk and talk your way through the town, discovering the truly unique background of the area, stopping along the way for drinks and canapes.

9. Horizontal Falls

Described by David Attenborough as “one of the greatest natural wonders in the world”, the Horizontal Falls near Broome are caused by the rise and fall of the tides, as water rushes to get through two narrow gaps into the seas beyond.

Join Horizontal Falls Adventures to see this phenomenon from all angles – from your seaplane flight into Talbot Bay, to a jet boat ride through the falls themselves and even a swim with the Tawny Sharks that call this area home.

There’s a huge range of tour options, from day tours to the brand new luxury overnight epic during which you stay aboard The Jetwave Pearl and get to see this incredible part of The Kimberleys at all times of day.

10. Pearl Luggers Tour

If you don’t have time to visit Willie Creek Pearl Farm 38 kilometres north of Broome, you can still get an insight into the wild history of pearling in Broome on their Pearl Luggers Tour , located in Chinatown. Hold a pearl, taste pearl meat, hold original diving gear and even see a fully rigged and restored pearl lugger, originally built in 1903.

11. Broome Dinosaur Adventures

Before there were people in Broome, there were dinosaurs, and you can’t leave without discovering the evidence they left behind. Journey across Roebuck Bay with Broome Dinosaur Adventures’ Dinosaur Adventure Tour . Explore secluded bays, creek inlets and beaches to find 120 million-year-old dinosaur tracks, with cocktails, of course.

You’ll need a moderate level of fitness for the walking portions of this tour and be sure to pack your reef shoes. Tour dates depend on the tides.

12.  Greg Quicke’s Astro Tours

See far beyond Broome with Greg Quicke’s Astro Tours , which focus on what’s said to be some of the best stargazing skies on the planet. Using massive telescopes and lasers, guests will see planets, galaxies and moons visible from both the southern and northern hemispheres due to Broome’s proximity to the equator.

For two to three days a month between March and October, you may even get to see the phenomenal ‘Stairway To The Moon’, caused by a full moon’s reflection rising over the mudflats of Roebuck Bay.

13. Broome Trike Tours

Bikes and buses are nothing new; but a trike or better yet, being chauffeured in a limo trike is certainly unique. This is one of the options with Broome Trike Tours , which takes guests around the local area. Other tour options include meeting crocodiles at the Croc Feeding Tour at Malcolm Douglas Wildlife Park and taste-testing bush tucker .

14. Broome Aviation Tours

This is The Kimberleys for the time poor: Broome Aviation’s Gorgeous Gorges Tour is a full-day adventure – starting and ending in Broome – that encompasses the region’s must-dos, with scenic flights over gorges, waterfalls, red ranges and remote islands that make up the Buccaneer Archipelago.

But what makes this experience so special is the opportunity to travel on land too. Among the many stops is Windjana Gorge, home to the revered Johnstone River Crocodile and an ancient reef system that’s significant to geologists. Passengers can cool off with a swim at Bell Gorge waterfall.

Your Guide to Broome 4WD Tours

If you're planning a self-drive 4WD adventure, ensure your vehicle is suitable for off-road conditions.

With its vast stretches of wilderness, vibrant coastlines, and stunning natural wonders, Broome calls to adventurers and nature lovers around the world.

One of the best ways to experience Broome’s hidden gems, natural beauty, and rugged landscapes is with a thrilling off-road 4WD adventure.

Whether you want to do a self-guided 4WD excursion or book a tour with a local operator, there is a vast range of options when it comes to exploring the Kimberley.

If you’re ready to get off the beaten path during your trip to Broome, here’s our guide to 4WD trips in and around Broome.

4WD Drives & Self Tours in Broome

Live for adrenaline and adventure? Want to tour remote areas at your own pace? You can hire a 4WD vehicle and take your self-guided adventure cruising along the Dampier Peninsula coastline, exploring the Kimberley and the North West.

Here are some of the best options for self-guided 4WD tours in Broome and the Kimberley.

  • Cape Leveque Road – Cape Leveque Road is a challenging, rugged road that spans around 200km. About 20 km out of Broome, this famed stretch leads to the Cape Leveque Peninsula and is ideal for the true adventure lover and 4×4 enthusiast. This remote route takes you right alongside stunning beach views, striking rock formations, dramatic cliffs, and captivating scenery. Although Cape Leveque Road is now fully sealed, it is still important to be aware of sudden sharp bends and steep sections and to check current road conditions before heading out.
  • The Gibb River Road – Another notorious 4WD route in Broome is the Gibb River Road. Known as one of the main attractions in Kimberley, this 660 km stretch goes from Derby through to Kununurra and is full of exciting scenery, rugged terrain, and untouched wilderness. Be aware that this route is typically opened between mid-April and mid-May according to the rains. During high water levels, the river crossings are not safe for passing.
  • Broome to Derby Road – The Broome to Derby Road stretch is 220 km of mainly gravel and dirt roads, known as one of the most popular 4WD routes in the area. Along the way, travellers can stop at attractions such as Boab Prison Tree, the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park, and various historic sites. Expect to see scenic waterways, remarkable gorges, wildlife, and vibrant scenery all around.
  • Cable Beach Coastline – For beginner 4WD adventurers, consider the iconic 22 km stretch of gorgeous coastline. This route includes vast stretches of white sand set against a backdrop of turquoise ocean water on one side and striking red earth on the other.
  • Bidyadanga Road – Head through the heart of the Kimberley on Bidyadanga Road, a rugged stretch of road that is only suited to 4WD vehicles. Travel approximately 50 km through true wilderness, bushland, creeks, cattle stations, and rocky outcrops, all while navigating bumpy sections of road and that will keep your focus sharp and adrenaline high. You should always carry a map, GPS, and reliable emergency communication devices, but it is especially important if you embark on this trip. With no markers along the way and zero services or facilities around, this is a trip where you must be fully prepared.
  • Beagle Bay Road – Beagle Bay Road winds through remote areas of the Kimberley coastline. Expect to view deep gorges, stunning views, and picturesque beaches. With especially rugged and challenging terrain and narrow, winding sections, Beagle Bay Road is best suited to experienced 4WD handlers.
  • Gantheaume Point – Just a short drive out of Broome awaits an unforgettable 4WD experience. With a mix of sandy stretches and rocky outcrops, this challenging route is perfect for 4WD enthusiasts looking to experience panoramic views and breathtaking surroundings. Be sure to stop at low tide to check for the famous Gantheaume Point dinosaur tracks to possibly be revealed.

Safety Tips for Self-Drive 4WD Trips in Broome

If you hire a 4WD, be sure to check with the rental company about where you can and can’t go with the hire vehicle.

When planning a self-drive 4WD tour, be sure to take the Broome seasons into account. During the wet season, many roads can become impassable due to high water levels. Always check the weather and local road conditions before heading out.

Also, if you choose a self-drive tour, make sure you are aware of special considerations when travelling in the bush. Off-roading in the Kimberley requires proper preparation to ensure a fun, safe, smooth trip.

When you hire a 4WD, you’ll want to ask if it includes recovery gear and a spare tire or who to contact in the event of an issue.

Be sure you’re prepared for your 4WD trip by using a checklist such as this:

  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Maps, GPS, and compass
  • Emergency communications (satellite phone and UHF radio)
  • Adequate food and water
  • A first aid kit (bandages, gloves, gauze, antibacterial wipes, antiseptic cream, burn ointment, snake bite kit, necessary medications, hot and cold packs, hydration tablets, scissors, tweezers, etc.)
  • Emergency Safety Kit with flares, fire extinguisher, tarp, safety glasses, axe or knife, heavy-duty gloves, a lighter or matches, extra batteries, flashlights, etc
  • A basic tool kit

Explore the stunning Cape Leveque, known for its red cliffs, pristine beaches, and vibrant blue waters.

My expert guide to the best things to do in Broome, Western Australia will make sure you have the best time possible in this coastal outback paradise!

Not many people visit Western Australia when they’re travelling in Australia . And even fewer venture all the way up north to the Kimberley region, where Broome is located.

Broome lies pretty much in the middle of nowhere. It is extremely isolated, that’s for sure. Its closest towns are Derby, a three-hour drive to the east, and Port Hedland, six hours to the south.

However, the township of Broome has heaps of great things to offer, from unique cultural experiences to show-stopping natural beauty.

It’s a gorgeous place to visit, whether you’re backpacking Australia or just seeking a unique place to get some winter sun!

Admire The Untouched Nature

From witnessing the Staircase to the Moon at high tide, enjoying the landscapes of Roebuck Bay, or cliff jumping and seeing dinosaur footprints, there are plenty of great outdoor things to do in Broome.

Or explore the town and check out the Sun Pictures Cinema, various art galleries, breweries and museums that display the unique side of Western Australia.

But to get you started on the right track, these are the best activities in Broome for you to choose from.

The staircase to the moon is a marvel that happens only on a full moon, and only at certain parts of the year. As the moon ‘rises’, it creates a ‘staircase’ like effect over the waters below. It’s a real spectacle.

When the Staircase to the Moon is scheduled to occur, the first two days host the markets at Town Beach. Here you’ll find local produce, entertainment, souvenirs and delicious dinners from all corners of the globe.

If you happen to visit Broome at the right time, the Staircase to the Moon is certain to impress!

Broome is a town rich in history, which can be experienced on a walk around Chinatown. The town’s popularity rose as it was discovered to be a prominent destination for pearling.

In the first days of the industry, many migrants from Asia came to work on the pearling boats. This gives Broome the diverse society that it has retained to this day. Thus the town has named this area ‘Chinatown’.

The area just north of Town Beach contains many pearling shops, Aboriginal art galleries, cafes and restaurants, and the unique architecture is truly one of a kind.

It’s one of the more popular Broome attractions, not only among tourists but locals as well.

Chinatown Broome

The pearling industry was not without its horrors. In fact, while 80% of the world’s mother of pearl was found in Broome before WWI, many divers met tragedy under the water.

The cemetery demonstrates the extraordinary scale of this, as it shows row upon row of tombstones, inscribed with Japanese writing.

Japanese Cemetery Broome

The Broome Historical Museum discusses this entire history in further detail.

Its exhibitions mention the rich Aboriginal history in the area, how pearling saw the founding of the isolated town and the future of the pearling town and industry in north Western Australia.

It’s a great place to go to learn the background of this incredibly unique town.

Visit the Broome Historical Museum website for more in-depth info!

The Kimberly Region in Western Australia is an area rich in Aboriginal heritage. As such, there are lots of art galleries to admire in Broome.

Some of these art galleries are from local communities, and some are further afield. All of them display some of the best Aboriginal artwork from Central Australia and the southern part of the country.

Most of these art galleries are free to enter, and the artwork can often be purchased.

The art galleries are a Broome must-see for all art lovers!

Head down to Matso’s Brewery near Town Beach to sample some local Broome beer and locally sourced food.

If you’re feeling adventurous, opt to try some of the flavoured beers. They sell them in full or half pints or a sample tray with try flavours such as ginger, lemon or even chilli!

The world’s longest-running open-air cinema, Sun Pictures is a novelty spot to visit and plays several movies every evening.

The interior is decorated with quirky decor and memorabilia, so even if you can’t make it to watch a film, it’s worth a quick visit!

If you’re travelling with a partner and wish to go on a quiet date night, Sun Pictures is one of the best places to visit in Broome.

Things to Do in Cable Beach in Broome

Cable Beach, on the edge of the Indian Ocean, is a popular beach stretch with bars, restaurants and accommodation.

It’s easily the most famous of the Broome beaches and is famous for camel rides!

It’s long too – 22km long to be precise- and stretches from Gantheaume Point all the way back to town.

Cable Beach sunsets are world-renowned and for great reason. Experiencing the sunset over the Indian Ocean from a tropical beach is a spectacular experience.

Enjoy a sunset with your favourite Western Australia brew while sitting on the beach. Or if you have a 4WD car, take it past the rocks and drive it down the beach on the hunt for your own private sunset spot.

Sunsets at the beach are part of the Broome sightseeing experience that no one can resist!

Cable Beach Sunset

You can rent out SUPs from various companies around Cable Beach and take them out into the calm, clear waters of the Indian Ocean.

If you’ve never tried it before, stand up paddleboarding is a lot of fun, and good for you as well! Definitely give it a go when looking for what to do in Broome.

With a collection of bars and restaurants in the Cable Beach area, you won’t have to go too far to find a great feed.

Popular options include the Zookeepers Café for breakfast, Zanders and Sunset Bar and Grill for amazing views of Cable Beach and Divers for drinks until 1 am.

Easily drivable from Broome, the Willie Creek Pearl Farm offers tours that demonstrate exactly how a pearl is farmed in this part of the world.

As well as learning everything you could ever want to know about the pearling industry, you can get right in the action, cruise on the waters of the creek, or take a scenic helicopter flight over the area.

About half an hour from Broome is Coconut Wells, a beach area where, at high tide, one of the dips fills up with water.

It’s a great spot for swimming, four-wheel driving, and marvelling at the astonishing coastal beauty of the Kimberley region.

Coconut Wells Broome

What used to be a rugged 3-hour ride to Cape Leveque on 4WD tracks is now fully sealed, making it a great trip from town.

A great destination for those who want to really get off the beaten track, Cape Leveque offers isolated beaches and wild camping opportunities.

Book your guided tour to the vast wilderness of Cape Leveque with a visit to the local Aborigines communities for the full Broome sightseeing experience!

Must have – a reliable car and a sense of adventure!

Not one for the budget travellers, but definitely something to put on your bucket list which shows you the very best of the coastal Kimberley region.

The Horizontal Falls is a spectacle consisting of two gorges facing each other. At high tide, the water creates a waterfall effect as it passes through the gap.

Horizontal Falls day trips show the Kimberley region at its finest, where red rock meets blue waters, using seaplanes and boats to help you experience the magic of this part of Western Australia.

A little further out – on the other side of Derby – is the almighty Gibb River Road. This is one of the most jaw-droppingly beautiful things to see in Broome as well in Australia.

Here the Kimberley region is in its element, with dramatic gorges, seemingly enchanted waterfalls and rugged 4WD tracks.

From Broome, it’s easy to reach Windjana Gorge – which is one of the best places in the country to see freshwater crocodiles.

You can also reach Tunnel Creek, which is a network of underwater caves, with Aboriginal art and unique wildlife.

From these points of interest, you can loop back onto the highway to return to Broome.

If your travels are taking you west, there are plenty more highlights further up the Gibb River Road, such as Bell Gorge, Galvan’s Gorge and El Questro Park.

The Gibb River Road ends near the Northern Territory border where you can reward yourself with a dip in an infinity pool overlooking Lake Argyle – Australia’s second-largest lake!

A popular spot for cliff jumping, Gantheaume Point juts out into the Indian Ocean at the height of around eight metres. Also in the area are ancient dinosaur footprints!

Just around this headland is Riddell Beach, and you’ll be able to look over Roebuck Bay which is one of the most scenic places near Broome.

Roebuck Bay is located just south of the Broome town centre. A thriving wetland, Roebuck Bay is home to many local birds and animals in addition to the cool, red rock formations.

Things To Do In Broome

From June to September, huge numbers of humpback whales migrate north to breed. They travel from Antarctica to the warm Indian Ocean waters near Broome.

If you’re visiting Broome during whale season, there is a good chance you’ll see humpback whales as they spend a few months in the area mating and nursing their young.

Iso if you visit Broome during these months, definitely get out for a whale watching tour!

Wondering if we need a car to see Broome, especially Cable Beach? We are getting off of a Kimberley cruise there and want to enjoy the area for a couple of days. Thank you.

Hi Pamela, what exciting trip you are going on. We have heard the Kimberley Cruises are amazing. Hope you have a great time. With car rental for Broome, we would recommend it maybe for just one day. You can see the attractions that require a vehicle and then on the other day go to the attractions you can access by walking. Have a great time. 🙂

Nice guide for Broome – I think one thing needs to be backed up is that travelling by bus up the west coast of Australia is not going to be the same as the east coast. You really need a car to be able to see the West because most of the towns on the west coast are just hubs for the outback and country areas or to run the mining industry and Broome would be the most interesting town among them all.

Thanks David for your comment. Totally agree with. Western Australia is such a big state and it’s a long way between towns when driving. I am from the west originally and know exactly what you are talking about. We did so many day trips to Perth growing up which were 6 hours return. A car travelling the west coast would definitely be the best way. But being such a large state it definitely takes a lot of travel time. Its’s great the popular tourist towns in WA have regional airport and car rentals for those doing quick holiday trips and are still able to get around the the town and area surrounding. Once I took the coastal bus north from Perth and it does take twice as long as driving as there are so many stops to pick up passengers. Like you said, if the traveller has time, 100% do Western Australia by car and at your own pace. Happy travel 🙂

You should include Moontide Distillery. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon tasting great Australian-made gin and enjoying a cheeseboard.

Thank you so much David. That sounds amazing. We will have to add that one too. 🙂

mmmm pretty good guide, but you need another update…. the road to Cape Leveque is now sealed all the way, so no longer a ‘rugged ride’. and last time I looked -which was about 5 minutes ago, if you drove west from Broome for six hours, you’d be incredibly wet. You certainly would not find Port Hedland, it is south of here. Breakfast at Zanders this morning!

Thanks so much for the info! Have just updated our post. Really appreciate it. Hope you enjoyed breakfast at Zanders. Enjoy Broome.

Broome is really an amazing place, and these amazing things suites here..:) Thank you for sharing these ideas with us.

It is a gorgeous place. We can not wait to return. Thank you.

Broome Travel Guide

The stunning Cable Beach at sunset in Broome, Australia

The city was founded in the 1880s as a pearling town and named after the territory’s governor. Today, the area’s mining boom has created an influx of people into the city.

When you visit Broome, you’ll find a small, sleepy little seaside town with not much to do except lounge around in the sun. It’s out of the way nature means it doesn’t see a lot of visitors per year (to be fair, neither does most of Western Australia). The heat and humidity here can get unbearable, and the phrase “Broometime” is often used to describe the city’s sluggish pace.

While there’s not much to do here, it’s worth a visit to enjoy the slow pace of life. There’s a beach, some museums and activities around town, and some good eateries. The town is also an excellent base for visiting the nearby Outback.

Use this Broome travel guide to help you plan your trip, save money, and make the most of your time in this laid-back coastal town!

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Broome

The iconic rocky and rugged landscape of the Kimberley near Broome, Australia

1. Tour the Pearl Farms

Broome used to be the largest pearling port in the world. Founded around 1880, pearls were an important commodity used for making cutlery, buttons, and jewelry. By 1900, there were 300 ships here, though the industry fell into decline during World War II (and then, after the war, plastic was invented, which diminished the need for pearls). You can learn all about the region’s rich history at the Pearl Lugger Museum (tours for 30 AUD). If you want a more hands-on experience, Willie Creek Pearls also offers a two-hour boat tour for 129 AUD. You’ll learn about the risks and challenges of the industry while also getting to hold and touch all kinds of valuable pearls. You can also take a tour to harvest your own pearls for 500 AUD.

2. Enjoy Cable Beach

Cable Beach is Broome’s biggest attraction, a 23-kilometer (14-mile) stretch of sandy white beach. Every day, the high tides wash the sand clean, making it one of the most pristine beaches in Australia. It faces west, so there’s an incredible sunset every day. You can fish, kayak, swim, surf, or just relax. There’s also a nudist section nearby too (north of the rocks) if you’re feeling like letting loose.

3. See Dinosaur Footprints

Broome has the largest and most diverse dinosaur footprints in the world and when the tide below Gantheaume Point gets low enough you can see some of them. There are around 20 different kinds of tracks, which stretch some 80 kilometers (50 miles). Many are over 130 million years old. If you want an in-depth experience, take a tour They aren’t cheap (225 AUD), but the guides are excellent and provide a lot of context. You can also download an app and do a self-guided tour if you’re on a budget.

4. Spend Time in the Kimberley

Broome is also close to the Kimberley, an outback region three times bigger than England that’s filled with stunning gorges, beautiful waterfalls, and a vast desert landscape. It was one of the first areas settled in Australia some 65,000 years ago (Europeans arrived here in the 1830s). There are all kinds of day trips and hikes here that you can do solo, as well as multi-day guided tours. Expect to pay around 1,200 AUD for a 3-day guided excursion. If you’re going solo, popular overnight hikes include Piccaninny Gorge and Lurujarri Dreaming Trail.

5. See James Price Point

If you’re heading to the Kimberley, don’t miss the stunning landscapes of James Price Point. It’s a vivid headland just 52 kilometers (32 miles) north of Broome and home to some stunning rock formations and towering red cliffs. It’s absolutely beautiful and worth seeing with your own eyes!

Other Things to See and Do in Broome

1. relax at riddell beach.

Riddell Beach isn’t as well known as Cable Beach, but it’s only 8 kilometers (5 miles) outside of Broome between Riddell Point and Gantheaume Point. Like Gantheaume Point, Riddell Beach has gorgeous red pindan cliffs set against the Indian Ocean. It’s rockier than Cable Beach, but the landscape is more interesting (and the beach is less crowded).

2. See the Staircase to the Moon

You’ll have to nail the timing to see this one, but it’s worth it. During the dry months, the rising full moon creates an optical illusion of a staircase leading up to it over the exposed mudflats of Roebuck Bay. It’s such a popular event for the locals that there’s even a market set up for it. You can usually see it a few times a month between March-October.

3. Go Fishing

In Broome, you can fish for tuna, mud crab, barramundi, and a whole lot more! Roebuck Bay is especially a popular area for fishing, and you can arrange a fishing charter trip, heli-fishing (yes, that’s a thing), kayak fishing, and even spearfishing. Plus, while you’re out in Roebuck Bay, you can keep an eye out for the rare Snubfin Dolphin. Expect to pay around 359 AUD for a shared fishing charter.

4. Watch a Film Outdoors

Sun Pictures is a heritage-listed movie theater; it’s the oldest operating outdoor theater in the world! It still shows new releases and it has retained much of its original character. Relaxing in one of the well-worn deck chairs while eating popcorn under the starry sky and watching a film is one of the best things you can do in Broome. The theater was opened in 1903, and if you’re inclined, you can take a history tour for 5 AUD (June-August only). Tickets for a movie are 18.50 AUD and movies are played nightly.

5. Visit the Broome Historical Museum

This is a small historical museum run by a group of volunteers but it’s full of artifacts, old photography, and tons of pearling memorabilia from Broome’s past. The Sailmaker’s Shed is especially interesting, as it was once the home of Charles Bagge’s sailmaking business. It won’t take long to see everything, but it’s worth a visit to get a sense of the region’s past. Admission is 12 AUD.

6. Relax at the Buddha Sanctuary

The Buddha Sanctuary at Cable Beach is a wonderful ornamental garden that invites guests to relax, meditate, practice yoga, or simply just enjoy the space. Opened in 2003 as a community space, it has a deck platform, landscaped gardens, lots of shade to relax in, and a 3-meter (10-foot) crystal Buddha statue. It’s free to visit, or you can sign up for a yoga class for 20 AUD (mats and blocks are included) or 150 AUD for a 10-class pass.

7. Visit the Japanese Cemetery

This tranquil cemetery is dedicated to the memory of the Japanese workers who lost their lives to Broome’s pearling industry in the early 20th century. Harvesting pearls and operating pearl luggers was risky business, and many foreigners died as a result (many others suffered from the bends, aka diver’s paralysis, as well). The cemetery is peaceful and beautiful, with more than 900 graves marked by pink beach rocks and stones inscribed in Japanese.

8. See the Crocodiles at Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park

Named for Australian wildlife filmmaker Malcolm Douglas, here you can see crocodiles, dingoes, kangaroos, wallabies, emus, giant snakes, and lizards. It’s very much a family place (expect lots of children!) but it’s a good way to see some unique wildlife. In the shop, you can watch some vintage footage of Malcolm’s documentaries. Admission is 35 AUD.

9. Wander the Broome Courthouse Markets

The Broome Courthouse Markets are held every Saturday and Sunday (April-October) from 8am-1pm in the heritage-listed gardens of the Courthouse. What started as a small group of locals trading local products 25 years ago has now turned into dozens of stalls chock full of food, arts, and crafts. There’s always a really upbeat vibe here and it makes for a great place to do a bit of shopping and snacking.

10. Take an Aboriginal Walking Tour

Broome and the surrounding area have a rich Aboriginal history and you owe it to yourself (and the locals) to learn a little about this fascinating culture. You can join Bart Pigram from Narlijia Cultural Tours on a tour where he’ll tell you all about the history of the region as well as stories from the pearling industry and the role of Aboriginals in the industry. He’ll also talk about how the Yawuru people made use of the surrounding landscape. It’s 85 AUD per person (there are also several other tour options available, including a cultural catamaran tour).

Broome Travel Costs

A lone tree in the mix of muddy waters on the coast of Broome, Australia

Hostel prices – There are only a couple hostels in Broome. A bed in a 4-6-bed dorm costs 29-39 AUD per night. Private rooms start at 75 AUD. Free Wi-Fi is standard and all the hostels have self-catering facilities so you can cook your own food. Only one hostel (Kimberley Travellers Lodge) includes free breakfast.

For those traveling with a tent, camping is available outside the city for 20-30 AUD per night for a basic tent plot (for two) without electricity.

Budget hotel prices – For budget hotels, you are looking to spend at least 150 AUD for a double room. There aren’t a lot of budget options here so be sure to book in advance if you want a hotel (there aren’t a lot of hotel options in general). Expect basic amenities like free Wi-Fi, AC, and TV. Most hotels have pools as well.

Airbnb has limited options here too, with private rooms starting at 125 AUD per night (but averaging double that). Entire homes/apartments start around 200 AUD per night but often cost double or even triple that price. Book early to find the best deals.

Food – Food in Australia is diverse, with each region having its own specialities. While you can find cuisine of all types here, popular traditional choices include BBQ meat (especially sausages), meat pies, fish and chips, seafood, chicken parmigiana (chicken schnitzel topped with tomato sauce, ham, and melted cheese), and of course the infamous vegemite on toast.

That said, food isn’t cheap in Broome compared to other parts of Australia due to its out-of-the-way location. Most restaurant entrees cost at least 25 AUD. Fast food (like McDonald’s) costs 13 AUD for a combo meal. Pizza costs 14-18 AUD for a small.

If you want to splash out, a three-course meal at a restaurant serving traditional Australian cuisine costs around 30 AUD.

Beer costs around 12-13 AUD while a bottle of water is 2 AUD. For a cappuccino or latte, expect to pay 5 AUD.

If you plan to cook your own meals, expect to pay 90-100 AUD for a week’s worth of groceries. This gets you basic staples like rice, pasta, seasonal produce, and some meat or fish.

Backpacking Broome Suggested Budgets

On a backpacker budget, you can visit Broome for around 80 AUD per day. This budget assumes you’re staying in a hostel dorm, cooking all of your meals, limiting your drinking, using the bus to get around (or walking), and doing mostly free activities like hiking and enjoying the beach. If you plan on drinking, add 10-20 AUD to your daily budget.

On a mid-range budget of 225 AUD per day, you’ll be able to stay in a private hostel room or Airbnb, eat out for a few meals, enjoy a couple of drinks, rent a bicycle to get around, and do some paid activities like museum visits and an Aboriginal walk.

On a “luxury” budget of 425 AUD or more, you can get stay in a hotel, rent a car for a few days, eat out for all your meals, enjoy a few nights out, and do guided tours and hiking excursions. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in AUD.

Broome Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Broome can be an expensive place to visit. If you aren’t careful, you’ll blow through your entire budget in no time flat. Here are some ways to save money when you visit:

  • Drink goon (box wine) – Goon is infamous on the Australian backpacker hostel trail. This cheap box of wine is the best way to drink, get a buzz, and save a lot of money at the same time.
  • Cook your own meals – Eating out is not cheap. The best way to reduce your costs is to cook as many meals as possible. Stay in a hostel or Airbnb with a kitchen to ensure you can skip the restaurants.
  • Car share – Australia is a big country that can be expensive to get around. If you don’t have a ride, hitch a ride with other travelers using sites like Gumtree, Jayride, or a hostel message board. And if you do have a vehicle, offer rides to other travelers. They can chip in for gas to help you lower costs.
  • Book tours as a package – This region has a lot of exciting activities and tours that eat into any budget. Booking activities together through a hostel or tour agency can get you a discount and save you hundreds of dollars as a repeat customer.
  • Work for your room – Many hostels offer travelers the opportunity to work for their accommodation. In exchange for a few hours a day of cleaning, you get a free bed to sleep in. Commitments vary but most hostels ask that you stay for at least a week.
  • WWOOF it – WWOOFing is a program that allows you to work on organic farms in exchange for free room and board. Everyone I’ve met who stays in the country long-term does it for at least one month. It’s a great way to reduce your expenses and extend your travels.
  • Stay with a local – If you plan ahead, you can usually find a Couchsurfing host to host you during your stay. This way, you not only have a place to stay but you’ll have a local that can share their insider tips and advice.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle – The tap water here is safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle with you to save money and lower your plastic use. LifeStraw makes a bottle with a built-in filter to ensure your water is always clean and safe.

Where to Stay in Broome

While small, Broome still has a couple of hostels worth checking out if you’re on a budget. Here are my suggested places to stay in Broome:

  • Kimberley Travellers Lodge Broome
  • Cable Beach Backpackers

How to Get Around Broome

Peal ships out on the water at sunset near Broome, Australia

Public transportation – The Broome Explorer Bus is the best way to get around Broome (and is really the only public transportation in town). A 24-hour pass is 15 AUD and a 72-hour pass is 35 AUD. There’s also a 10-ride pass for 38 AUD. Otherwise, a single-fare ticket is 4.50 AUD.

Bike rental – The terrain around Broome is flat and easy to navigate on a bicycle. Broome Cycles has a variety of bikes available, including children’s bikes and fat-tire bikes for riding on the beaches. It’s 30 AUD per day for a standard bike and 60 AUD per day for a fat tire bike. The more days you rent, the cheaper it gets. They also have electric bikes.

Taxis – While convenient, taxis are expensive. Fares start at 6 AUD and go up by 4 AUD per kilometer. Skip them if you can! There is no Uber here.

When to Go to Broome

The best time to visit Broome is during the dry season, which lasts from May to October. The weather is the best during this time, with warm days and nights, and clear skies nearly every day. The average daily high during this time is around 30°C (86°F) or higher.

The wet season usually lasts from November to April. It gets hot during this period and temperatures average around 33°C (91°F) (though it can get much hotter as well). Thunderstorms and torrential downpours can occur, especially during January and February when monsoons and cyclones are more common. Getting into the Kimberley area is not recommended during this time due to flooding and other hazards.

Most people prefer to come just after the wet season when things are lush and green, but not yet overrun with travelers. In other words, avoid the wet season!

How to Stay Safe in Broome

Broome is an incredibly safe place to backpack and travel. Violent attacks and petty theft are rare. People are nice and helpful and you’re unlikely to get into trouble here.

Most incidents in Broome tend to occur because visitors are not used to the region’s unique climate and wilderness. Be sure you have plenty of sunscreen and stay as hydrated as possible. If you’re hiking, make sure you know what to expect ahead of time. Be on the lookout for snakes and spiders, and if you’re bitten, seek immediate care.

Furthermore, if you’re swimming, heed the red and yellow flags. Yellow flags indicate swimming conditions may be dangerous; red flags mean the beach is closed.

The climate during Broome’s wet season can be quite severe, with unpredictable weather and heavy rainfall that may cause flooding and impassable roads. This is especially true of the Kimberley area. You also have to be aware of jellyfish during the wet season: the large Box Jellyfish and the smaller Irukandji jellyfish are found off the coast of Broome from November to May. They’re dangerous, and you do not want to be stung by one!

Mother nature in Broome is NOT a force to be reckoned with so prepare accordingly.

Solo female travelers are generally safe here, however, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone at night intoxicated, etc.). Consult other solo female travel blogs for specific advice.

If you’re worried about travel scams, you can read about common travel scams to avoid here . There aren’t many in Australia though.

If you experience an emergency, dial 000 for assistance.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

  • Taking a Horizontal Falls tour

Taking a Horizontal Falls tour from Broome is an incredible experience that’ll take you to one of the Kimberley’s most unusual natural wonders.

David Attenborough once described Western Australia’s Horizontal Falls as “Australia’s most unusual natural wonder”. At the time, he also said that “few people have ever seen this spectacle”, but that was back in 2002 and, since then, a Horizontal Falls tour has become extremely popular.

There’s a good reason why! Visiting Horizontal Falls is one of the best things to do from Broome , with a trip combining a unique natural experience with a scenic flight across the Kimberley, plus a great meal and comfortable cruise. It’s about more than just the destination.

The Horizontal Falls are about 250 kilometres from Broome, in the Buccaneer Archipelago. There are no roads there and travelling by boat is impractical for a day trip (longer cruises along the coast do stop in, though). That’s why the only real way to do a tour to the Horizontal Falls is by plane… but that’s not a bad thing, because it’s best seen from the air anyway!

In case you’re wondering whether you should do a Horizontal Falls tour, I wanted to share a bit of information about what to expect. Although the short answer (in case you don’t want to read any further) is yes, you should do it – and you can book the tour here !

What are the Horizontal Falls?

First, though, let’s take a look at what the Horizontal Falls are because, although the name is apt, it doesn’t really describe what’s going on here.

You’ll find the Horizontal Falls on the edge of Talbot Bay in the Buccaneer Archipelago. where there’s a 20-metre-wide gap in the tall red wall along the water edge, creating a 100-metre-long passage through to a lake. On the other side of this lake, the same thing happens through to another lake, meaning there are two passages in total.

You may’ve heard about the legendary tides of the western Kimberley, which can differ by up to ten metres in height between high tide and low tide. Well, these tides are the reason you get the Horizontal Falls.

As the water rushes into Talbot Bay from the Indian Ocean, it reaches these gaps in the cliffs and millions of litres try to flow through each second. It’s more than can fit, so a build-up forms on one side and the water level becomes higher than the lake on the other side. It’s created a waterfall – and a super fast one, at that!

What I think is particularly cool, though, is that the waterfall is always changing. At the extremes of the tide, it will be higher and faster. And twice a day, as the tides change, the water will flatten out and stop moving completely before a a new waterfall starts to form in the opposite direction.

How do you get to the Horizontal Falls?

There are no roads to this part of the Buccaneer Archipelago so most people get to the Horizontal Falls by plane.

The flight takes about 1 hour 15 min from Broome and about 40 minutes from Derby. It’s possible to go by helicopter, but most people choose the seaplane option.

Can you get to the Horizontal Falls by boat?

Going to the Horizontal Falls by boat is not practical as a day trip (or even an overnight trip). It’s about 12 hours one way from Broome and there’s not much along the way.

However, there are longer cruises that are going along the coastline past Talbot Bay, and some of them will stop here.

Are the Horizontal Falls worth the money?

The tour to the Horizontal Falls is not cheap but you get a lot for your money. There are the cruises in Talbot Bay, meals, some guided experiences, and the scenic flights to get there.

If you consider it to be a larger experience in the Kimberley – more than just simply visiting the Horizontal Falls – then I think it’s worth the money for something so special.

Why are the Horizontal Falls important?

The Horizontal Falls are important because there’s really nowhere else in Australia (possibly the world) where you’ll find this natural phenomenon.

It’s partly because the rocks are so old (up to 2 billion years old) and resistant to erosion that this is able to happen. And then, of course, that’s coupled with the huge tides you find in this part of Western Australia.

Although the Horizontal Falls have grown in popularity over recent years, most people in Australia have never visited. I wonder if they are actually better known by international visitors, who view them as one of the best places to visit in Western Australia .

But this is part of the adventure of visiting the Horizontal Falls – you’ll be seeing something unique that is still extremely remote. If it was easy to reach or near a capital city, it would be full of tourists every day, but you’ll get to experience it in just a small group.

What to expect on a Horizontal Falls tour

Although there are a couple of options for tour operators, there is really only one main operator I would recommend, and that’s Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures. You can see its two most popular tour options here .

The main experience the company offers is the Horizontal Falls Half-Day Seaplane & Boat Tour , and that’s the one I want to tell you about. It’s a great option and there are quite a few components to the tour.

The experience starts in Broome, where you’ll be picked up from your accommodation. The pick-up time depends on which tour you’re on – there’s a morning tour that leaves very early (normally around 5:30am) or an afternoon tour that leaves about 11:30am.

You’ll be transferred to the airport where you’ll board a seaplane. They are relatively small aircraft but don’t feel too cramped. There’s room for about 14 passengers.

From Broome Airport, you’ll fly east for about 250 kilometres, over the Dampier Peninsula, across some of the Indian Ocean, and then through the stunning Buccaneer Archipelago. The views from up here are amazing and the scenic flight is a highlight of the tour.

As you approach the destination from the air, the landscape of the archipelago looks like a giant brushstroke of ochre, solid and vibrant inland but fading out to thin tendrils and islands along the coast, the earth stark against the cobalt of the water. Bring your camera!

The advantage of flying in a seaplane is that you’re able to land right on the water at Talbot Bay. The tour operator has a large houseboat-style pontoon complex here and this will be the first stop. As well as being a comfortable place to relax, this is where you will get your meal – a cooked breakfast for the morning tour and a barramundi lunch for the afternoon.

The exact order of activities changes for each group but you will do two different boat tours while you’re here, and these are the main experiences of your time here on Talbot Bay.

One of the boat tours will be into the heart of the Horizontal Falls. The falls are made up of two channels that are separated by a narrow lake. The first channel is wide enough to safely drive a boat through and this is exactly what will happen – at high speed.

With the outboard motors roaring, you’ll hurtle through the passage, bumping uphill or downhill (depending on the tide that day), along the waterfall. It feels a bit like whitewater rapids and it’s exhilarating! The speed continues as you enter the lake, in a high-velocity arc until you’re back facing the falls and ready to go again.

The other channel is too narrow to safely take a boat through at speed, but this offers an opportunity for another fun activity. This time the skipper will back the boat into the torrent of water and run the engines hard enough that you’ll stay there without moving. You’ll get a close-up view of how strong and fast the tide is here.

The second boat tour you’ll do on Talbot Bay is much calmer. This time you’ll cruise around to see more the geology, learn about the flora and fauna, and perhaps spot a few special formations in the rocks that have been here for an incredible two billion years (that’s about half the life of the Earth)!

The birds rule the roost here because the cliffs are so steep, it can be hard for other land animals to live in this landscapes. But occasionally there are rock wallabies and even dingos, so keep your eyes peeled.

Back on the pontoon, there’s a swimming pool where you can take a dip – it’s got a cage around it to protect you from sharks and crocodiles. But that doesn’t mean the local sharks won’t come up to check you out. They’re harmless but they sometimes get fed here – and you can be in the water when that happens!

After all the activities at Talbot Bay, the Horizontal Falls tour is almost at an end. The last thing is to head back to Broome, taking to the skies in the seaplane again for another scenic flight with sweeping views of the land and water beneath. It’s quite interesting to see how different some of it will look with the change in light.

In total, the Horizontal Falls experience is about six hours long, with more than two hours of that in the plane, and about three hours on the water. I think it’s a good length of time – you never feel rushed, but you’re also ready to head back when it’s time.

Horizontal Falls tours from Broome

Broome is the base for a lot of the exploration in this coastal region of the western Kimberley and most people will do a trip to the Horizontal Falls from Broome. You’l have a few options to choose from.

The first tour option is the one I’ve just described. This is the half-day Horizontal Falls tour that includes return flights from Broome and all the activities on the water.

Another popular option adds Cape Leveque to the trip and makes it a full-day tour. This combined Cape Leveque and Horizontal Falls tour starts from Broome in a 4WD and drives for about two up to the the cape at the northernmost point of the Dampier Peninsula.

Cape Leveque is a beautiful spot, where the turquoise coastal water meets the bright white sand on the beach, lined with red rock cliffs. The cliffs have been eroded by water and wind, forming peculiar shapes that catch the sun and glow in the afternoons.

On the combined tour, you’ll have a meal here and have time to walk around and explore the beach and the cliffs. Then you’ll also get a tour of the nearby aquaculture hatchery that’s run by the Indigenous community at One Arm Point. From here, you’ll fly to Talbot Bay on the seaplane and begin the half-day itinerary.

Horizontal Falls tours from Derby

Derby is a town about 2 hours’ drive east from Broome and, although it’s small, it’s quite a popular spot for people to stop when they’re doing a longer drive through the Kimberley. It’s also much closer to the Horizontal Falls, so you can do your tours out of there, if you’re passing through.

There are two types of tours from Derby to the Horizontal Falls that you can do. The first is the standard half-day tour that I’ve already described. The only difference is that you’re flying in and out of Derby, rather than Broome.

But the other option is a bit different – it’s an overnight stay on the houseboat pontoon on Talbot Bay. The overnight tour from Derby has most of the same elements, but you’ll have added experience of seeing the sunset, the sunrise, and the bright night sky – plus the fun of hanging out on deck.

Although there are lots of things to do in Broome , many of the real treasures lay beyond the town’s borders, in the natural landscapes of the Kimberley. The Horizontal Falls may not be any more beautiful than some of the others, but it is unique – and that makes it extra special.

Getting to Broome and the Kimberley is normally an adventure in itself. While you’re here, it makes sense to add on an experience like the Horizontal Falls tour. It may seem like quite an expense, but it will be one of the highlights of your trips to the region.

The half-day Horizontal Falls tour I’ve recommended is excellent – it’s very well run, there is a great variety of activities, and there are no attempts to cut corners to maximise profit. I’m sure you’ll be happy with the operators and amazed by the sight of – and ride through – the amazing Horizontal Falls here in Western Australia.

James Price Point is located 1 hour out of Broome on the Dampier Peninsula. A popular free camping area, iconic for its magenta cliffs that hug the coastline.

There are no facilities in this pristine area, which is best for those wanting to swim, explore the coast or cast a line in a pristine natural location. Take a picnic lunch and explore the rugged area.

James Price Point

Getting to James Price Point requires a car. The road is sealed until you turn off Cape Leveque Rd onto Manari Rd. It is possible to visit James Price Point with a 2WD car, however, it will be more comfortable in a 4×4 as the road can be quite corrugated.

If there have been heavy rains, I wouldn’t recommend doing the trip in a 2WD.

Get your Thrill on at Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park

A short 20-minute drive out of Broome lies the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park. Home to over 2500 crocodiles , you’ll be enthralled from the moment you enter the giant (fibreglass!) crocodile mouth entrance of the park.

Open 7 days a week from 2-5 pm, with a daily crocodile feeding at 3 pm. When I visited, they had baby crocodiles that you could (safely) hold – I wasn’t game enough at the time!

your own tour broome

If you require transport, you can book a package that includes hotel pick-up and drop-off.

  • Duration: 3 hours

Just up the road, you’ll find the Mango Place where they sell, yep you guessed it – all things mangoes! From mango smoothies, jams, ice cream and even soaps, it’s worth popping in for a refreshment in the beautiful tropical garden grounds.

Witness the Wonder of the Horizontal Falls

This is one of the most memorable Broome day tours on offer.

The mesmerising Horizontal Falls, described as “one of the world’s great natural wonders” by David Attenborough himself, is a unique natural phenomenon created by the strong tidal movements in the northwest.

your own tour broome

I won’t sugar coat it – it’s a pricey experience as it requires a charter flight.

However, after doing the tour myself, I’d say it’s worth every penny for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. I’ve spoken to other tourists who come to Broome just to see the Horizontal Falls!

This might be your last chance to partake in this bucket list experience, with the Western Australian government banning boat tours from going through the falls from 2026.

Rockpool Hunting at Coconut Wells

This is one of my favourite self drive day trips from Broome! 25 minutes out of Broome you’ll find Coconut Wells.

There is a large lagoon that fills with ocean water when there are high tides (9m+), Broome locals will make a day of it and come here to do “the float.” Read all about it in my guide here .

Another reason to explore Coconut Wells is the numerous rock pools that magically appear on the beach at low tide. They look the best from above, but it’s interesting to explore the many little nook and crannies of rock pools to be found.

You can drive directly out to the beach if you have a 4WD, otherwise park here and follow the sandy track on the right to the beach (it’s around a 15-minute walk).

Explore Cape Leveque

Cape Leveque is found on the tip of the Dampier Peninsula. It’s no easy journey, being 200km (2.5 – 3 hours) from Broome to the tip but you’ll find a pristine coastline and undeveloped wilderness.

The road is now sealed all the way from Broome, which has made the 3-4 hour journey much more pleasant (and safer) in recent years.

Things to do and see in the area include Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, the famed Beagle Bay Church made of clam and pearl shells and the Arydloon Hatchery at the One Arm Point indigenous community.

your own tour broome

Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm

This small family-owned pearl farm is located on the tip of the Dampier Peninsula. Besides the popular Pearl Farm Tour , Cygnet Bay offers several other unique tours and experiences, including a waterfall reef scenic cruise that showcases the unique reefs and tides only found in the Kimberley.

Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm features an al fresco restaurant, and the only pool (an infinity one, at that!) found on the Dampier Peninsula.

Cape Leveque Tours

You can hop onto a full-day tour to see the highlights of Cape Leveque in one day, with all transport and planning taken care of.

This highly rated full-day experience departs Broome early in the morning to begin your adventurous day ahead. You will be travelling in a comfortable 4×4 coach to Beagle Bay for your first stop, with a visit to the pearl shell altar at the Sacred Heart Church.

your own tour broome

The tour then continues up the length of the cape, where you tour the hatchery and aquarium at One Arm Point. Lunchtime will be enjoyed at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, with a tour of the behind-the-scenes process of creating pearls.

There is also an option for a scenic flight to see the famed coastline from above on the way back to Broome or continue the journey on the 4WD bus. Click here for prices and to check availability.

Cultural Tours

Cultural tours are available with local indigenous businesses.

I went on Brian Lee’s Tagalong Tour, where we learnt about the history of the region, and tales of the local indigenous Bardi people and went mud crabbing and spearfishing before cooking up some of our catches on an open fire on the beach.

It was a brilliant and unique day tour, and Brian is an absolute legend. Other tours are available including Bundy’s Cultural Tours and Trevor’s Traditional Tours.

Tour Willie Creek Pearl Farm

Head out of town and up the Dampier Peninsula on a Willie Creek Pearl Farm tour. You’ll gain a unique insight into the intriguing process of modern pearl farming – from shell to showroom.

Marvel at Humpbacks on a Whale Watching Tour

Broome is known as the “ humpback highway ” for good reason, as over 35,000 humpback whales pass through each year in their annual migration. The best way to see these magnificent creatures up close is to join a whale-watching tour.

I can recommend this popular Whale Watching Sunset Cruise for an unforgettable experience in Broome. Whale sightings are guaranteed in July and August! (This seasonal tour runs from June to September).

On this five-star rated tour, you will enjoy a 4.5-hour sunset cruise onboard a sailing catamaran. You’ll have uninterrupted views and even be able to hear the whales with the onboard hydrophone.

The crew serve snacks and drinks, and will make sure you are well looked after the entire cruise. What better way to end a fantastic afternoon than sailing back to Broome with the setting sun behind you?

Transfers are included.

  • Duration: 4.5 hours

You can also check availability for a shorter day-time tour.

Spot a Snubfin Dolphin on an Eco Cruise

Broome is the only place in the world to see the Australian snubfin dolphin! These cute creatures can be described as “like a dolphin that’s run into a wall”

Since I enjoyed the whale watching tour so much, I went on a daytime snubfin dolphin eco cruise with Broome Whale Watching again.

your own tour broome

We spotted not only snubfin dolphins but also manta rays, sea snakes, and a turtle in Roebuck Bay. Tours include transport from your accommodation as well as morning or afternoon tea on board.

These tours are popular, so be sure to book in advance !

  • Duration: 4 hours

Soak in the Broome Sunset on a Seafood & Pearling Cruise

As you might be able to tell at this point, exploring Broome from the water is one of the best ways to experience Broome.

This indulgent sunset cruise allows you to do just that, whilst feasting on a 4-course dinner with optional beverages from the fully stocked bar on board.

You’ll admire the iconic Broome sunset while anchored off Cable Beach, topping off a wonderful ocean adventure.

There is also this option which provides light snacks canapes on a 4 hour sunset cruise.

  • Duration: 5.5 hours including transfers

Fly and Hike the Bungle Bungles

Another bucket list tour that allows you to explore one of WA’s iconic landmarks of the West Kimberley, the Bungle Bungle Range.

You’ll fly to Purnululu National Park , admiring the bee-like striped domes of the ranges from the sky.

Explore the remarkable Cathedral Gorge up close and other highlights of the park in an air-conditioned 4WD vehicle with a knowledgeable tour guide.

Relax at Eco Beach

Whilst Eco Beach Resort is best enjoyed as an overnight trip, the resort does welcome day trippers.

Enjoy a meal and drink at the restaurant overlooking the bay, stroll along the beach to explore the caves or participate in one of the many activities like kayaking offered by the Resort.

Just note that the infinity pool is for staying guests only.

Day trippers are recommended to call ahead to make sure the resort isn’t being used for private events before making the 1.5-hour drive from Broome.

It’s possible to do this trip as a self-drive day trip from Broome, or during peak season, Karma IV offers a full-day Eco Beach coastal cruise from Broome on their sailing catamaran.

Fly to Mitchell Falls

A West Kimberley bucket list destination is the remarkable Mitchell Falls.

Not many make it this far to see this remote attraction, but you’ll be spending your day on a fixed-wing charter plane exploring the best of the Australian Outback.

your own tour broome

This full-day tour includes a visit to an outback station, a flyover Horizontal Farms, a stop at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm plus breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea.

Go On a Bird Watching Adventure at Broome Bird Observatory

Fancy yourself a keen bird watcher, or interested to learn more about the 330+ bird species that call Broome home? Make your way to the Broome Bird Observatory , located on Crab Creek Rd on Roebuck Bay.

Tours on offer include a Shorebirds Tour, Mangrove Tour, Bush and Plains Tour and Lakes Tour. Either way, there is something for all nature lovers.

Return transfers can be booked by prior arrangement at a cost or drive yourself.

  • Duration: From 2.5 hours up to a full day

Try Your Hand at Mud Crabbing

Now this is a one-of-a-kind experience that you won’t see anywhere else in Western Australia! Jump on a catamaran and head to the mangroves with an experienced guide in search of mud crabs.

You’ll then get to enjoy the spoils of your labour as the crab meat as it is freshly cooked for you on board.

Hop Aboard a Fishing Charter

This one is for the avid fisherman (or, aspiring to be!). Join this family-friendly full-day fishing charter , even if you are just starting and want to learn more or are a keen fisherman already.

The tour includes all equipment, lunch and refreshments and return transfers.

Drive to Derby

Derby is a small outback town on the edge of the King Sound near Fitzroy River. It is possible to visit it as a day trip from Broome, taking about 2.5 hours by car on sealed roads.

Just before Derby, pull in at the Boab Prison Tree . This large, hollowed boab tree is over 1500 years old. As the name suggests, it has some morbid history as it was used as a prison or holding area for Aboriginal prisoners.

Nearby, visit the Mowanjum Art and Culture Centre to view and purchase artworks by the local indigenous tribes.

In Derby, the horseshoe jetty is the main tourist attraction. Walk along the pedestrian-only jetty and watch the tides change (fun fact: Derby has the highest tidal variations in Australia!).

For more ideas on what to do in Derby, read more here .

Final Thoughts on Broome Day Trips

That wraps up this guide with plenty of ideas for the best day trips, Broome and surrounds. There is so many exciting attractions and activities in and around Broome that no matter how you choose to spend your time, you’re sure to have a blast!

Memories forever!

“Very picturesque. Worth a visit. Staff so lovely and owner even came out to mingle with us all. Very down to earth family. I bought a tiny pearl from this farm which happened to be in the shape of a heart. I took it to my keeper back home who has since designed my ring it sits in. Memories forever!” (Willie Creek Pearl Farm - Broome).

travelgirl254. - Trip Advisor

Overwhelmed with the kindness of the owner.

“We were overwhelmed with the kindness of the owner Rob who took my parents down the long path to the boat in a wheelchair. The staff were so kind helping my aged parents get on and off the boat. Great service from everyone, calling you by name and being so friendly. Broome Crocodile Experiences

Broomes Crocodile Experiences Safe Encounters

Journey on a Broome Combo Tour and discover its rich history at the museum, visit Matso’s Brewery, and witness crocodiles at Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park – all while enjoying stress-free booking with flexible cancellation and payment options!

Tour the apex predator kingdom to witness daily crocodile feedings on this guided tour, complete with transportation for an enjoyable experience.

1. Crocodile Cruises

Crocodiles are fearsome hunters, adept at prowling along the water’s surface and lunging with sudden force to strike prey. Crocodile attacks have claimed more lives than sharks throughout history – from individual encounters to mass attacks against World War II soldiers. Crocodile tours provide safe experiences with these ancient creatures but it’s wise to take measures for your own protection on tour day – in particular by not eating meat-based foods prior to going on tour; carnivorous crocs will be attracted by your scent; wearing a hat, applying sunscreen on exposed skin areas and having binoculars ready will all ensure maximum enjoyment on tour day!

Broome offers several ways for visitors to view crocodiles at Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park & Wildlife Sanctuary, with one being an Iconic Afternoon Crocodile Cruise that features hotel pickup and drop-off in an air-conditioned bus, while learning about these majestic prehistoric reptiles during feeding time.

This fully guided tour gives you the rare chance to witness up to 60 crocodiles feeding frenzy in one of the park’s ponds! Furthermore, you will meet some of its residents such as Southern Cassowary birds, dingoes and kangaroos that call this park home.

Guluyambi Cultural Cruise and Yellow Water Wetlands Cruise provide another option, providing passengers a chance to sit on an observation platform and observe crocodiles safely from a boat. Though swimming in these areas isn’t advised, you can walk along shorelines and explore wetlands on foot in search of crocs, birdlife and more!

Positive reviews about these cruises indicate their safety and enjoyment, with travelers such as Veronica_M and Jackie_W raving about their unique up-close experience and informative narration. Furthermore, friendly staff made everyone feel at ease; transportation was impeccable making this an essential attraction in Broome.

2. Crocodile Encounters

As a rule, it’s always wise to stay away from alligators and crocodiles – whether on land or water, they can be much more dangerous than they appear. If one does catch you unawares, fight for your life; poking at their eyes causes maximum pain if possible. Crocodiles also have sensitive ears and noses so keep an eye out.

Saltwater crocodiles can be extremely territorial animals that will aggressively defend their territory even when not hungry, so it is wise to heed warning signs and swim only in designated swimming areas when camping or visiting areas known to have saltwater crocs present.

If a crocodile threatens you and you need guidance in handling it, seek the advice of local authorities and park rangers for guidance. They will inform you about safe swimming zones or hotspots where these creatures gather as well as ways to stay away from potential danger.

However, should you encounter a crocodile in the wild, do not approach or touch it; even if it appears to be sleeping. Crocodiles are extremely powerful creatures capable of inflicting serious injury upon humans with just one bite; their jaw can deliver up to 3,700 pounds per square inch in force which is over three and half times stronger than shark bite strength and over 100 times that of humans.

Crocodile enthusiasts should book their experiences through tour operators who follow strict safety protocols and are licensed by local authorities, such as Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park in Broome. It provides thrilling feeding experiences in an enclosed environment – making this activity perfect for families wanting an educational and entertaining experience during their time in Broome.

3. Crocodile Tours

People often associate crocodiles with Australia or the Amazon; those familiar with National Geographic shows in which large reptiles ambush wildebeests across rivers may remember large reptiles ambushing wildebeests by surprise ambushes by huge reptiles like this croc. But these predatory beasts live across many tropical regions in both freshwater and salt water environments – Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park offers thrilling feeding shows as well as museum exhibits following strict safety precautions, making this experience both educational and enjoyable for people of all ages alike!

Crocodile attacks on land are extremely rare as crocs prefer stalking their prey in water. If ever in an unsafe situation, back away slowly without making sudden movements or any sudden adjustments; if a crocodile decides you might make an appetizing meal for it, try moving in a straight line rather than in any zig-zag formations which could attract their attention; also remember crocodile eyes are highly vulnerable points so do not attempt to dissuade it by splashing water or striking them directly in its eyes or attacking with anything other than direct strikes to its eyes or attacking its eyes by splashing or striking them directly in its eyes.

Crocodile Park lies 15 minutes outside Broome and can be reached either by car, tour including it as part of its itinerary, or the Broome Bus which travels between Chinatown and Cable Beach.

Visitors can purchase basic admission tickets or enhance their visit with an upgraded experience that includes guided museum tours and brewery tasting at Matso’s Brewery. A brewery, museum, and crocodile park combo tour offers visitors an engaging tour experience throughout Broome in one unforgettable outing.

Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park should be on everyone’s itinerary when visiting Broome. Crocodiles are amazing creatures, and what better place to observe them than this popular attraction. However, visitors should keep in mind that any attempt at interactivity with crocs at the park could prove fatal for both you and them!

4. Crocodile Adventures

Crocodiles may conjure images of Australia or National Geographic specials depicting massive reptiles ambushing wildebeests crossing rivers in Africa. Unfortunately, however, crocodiles can be found all around the world and their attacks far outnumber shark bites. Their crushing bite can easily kill humans with 3,700 pounds per square inch pressure–three and a half times that of a lion and 25 times greater than human pressure! Their attacks range from individual encounters with these dangerous reptiles all the way to mass attacks such as World War II soldiers at Ramree Island when over 1,000 soldiers died due to saltwater crocodile attacks during World War II.

These ancient predators may appear formidable, yet they’re actually highly adaptive and strong animals with incredible strength, intelligence and flexibility. They have managed to adapt well across various habitats, hunting both on land and water for food sources; their incredible abilities allow them to survive and even thrive in many different environments – inspiring fear in many but saving lives along the way and becoming powerful symbols of courage and perseverance.

Though there’s no need to become friends with crocodiles, there are plenty of ways you can enjoy their presence in nature. Aside from safe crocodile cruises and wildlife parks such as Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park and Animal Refuge tours that include hotel pickup and drop-off via an air-conditioned bus as well as park tours with feedings of these amazing animals are popular activities for this purpose.

If you come across a crocodilian in the wild, attempt to remain calm and avoid making sudden movements or waving your arms. If it lunges at you, run quickly in a straight line – studies have demonstrated that humans run faster and more effectively this way than zig-zagging through it all.

Staying away from areas known to attract crocodilians – including nesting mounds, riverbanks and shallows where they congregate – is also paramount. When camping or fishing near water bodies such as rivers or lakes, camp two metres above high water marks, do your chores far away from any sloping banks and ensure you use appropriate precautions when handling waste near water edges and banks.
