gama bomb tour

Upon hitting play on the opening prologue track of BATS , it’s safe to assume that we’re about to embark on quite the journey - with GAMA BOMB as our intrepid tour guides. From the tombs of Egypt to the faded glamour of old Hollywood, Philly, Domo, John, Joe and James lead us through new sonic landscapes and all manner of novel adventures on what they themselves call their “weirdest” album yet.

BATS is the first GAMA BOMB album to be entirely self produced; utilising the remote recording skills picked up during various lockdowns over the past few years, recording for BATS was approached with a deliberately self-sufficient attitude. The writing process commenced in late 2021 with a prolific output and a no-holds-barred approach, meaning that when the time came to refine songs into the shape of an album, there were over 30 sketches of tracks to choose from. Philly comments: “Bats is a testament to our exploratory spirit - it’s the weirdest album we’ve ever made, but it feels totally like us. Some of these pieces venture into unfamiliar territory: melodic here, grinding there, even funky in spots. It was very freeing, and the result is catchy, powerful and fun.

Recording commenced in summer 2022, with the majority of the album being tracked at Domo’s home studio in Dublin. Those remote recording skills were put to the test in Poland, Northern Ireland and England over the course of several months, with mixing and mastering being completed in early Spring 2023. Taking the reins on mixing for the first time, Domo kept things simple - allowing the songs to shine in their own distinctive ways. The lack of external influences on their creative process may have been at times unnerving, but the results are unequivocally 100% GAMA BOMB, embracing the most experimental parts of their psyches. No dilution! Only BATS !

Whilst the lyrical content veers into various different directions, the album is tied together with a 1960s-inspired aesthetic as demonstrated via the BATS artwork - serving as a visual tribute to the iconic design trends and pop culture of the 60s. The art was created by the legendary Graham Humphreys, the artist behind iconic posters for A Nightmare on Elm Street, Evil Dead and What We Do In The Shadows, now in his fourth collaboration with GAMA BOMB . John comments: “The accompanying artwork and inlay by the lovely Rory McGuigan are based on 1960s exploitation movies in the vein of Russ Meyer and other directors who didn't want to put their name on their films.” Longtime GAMA BOMB fan and accomplished painter, Kirsty Clark, takes the starring role on the album artwork - welcoming you into the entirely fictional BATS cinematic universe.

Sonically, GAMA BOMB manage to stay true to their distinctive thrash sound, honed to perfection over two decades at the frontline of headbanging and fist-pumping. There are nods to heavy metal titans such as Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, there’s even a sliver of Bad Brains-esque punk attitude, and more familiar influences such as Tankard and Sodom are still evident. But if you think GAMA BOMB are serving up something run of the mill then you’ve clearly not accounted for a blazing saxophone solo (courtesy of Irish sax man Gavin Kerins) or a star-turn from hip hop pioneer The Egyptian Lover who raps on - naturally - Egyptron .

BATS is an album that could only be borne from GAMA BOMB ; on this, their eighth studio album, they have embraced their inner absurdities, they’ve taken a trust fall into each other's arms, relying on the idiosyncratic glue that has bound them together over the last 21 years to propel them forwards.

BATS by GAMA BOMB will be released by Prosthetic Records on November 10.

Gama bomb premiere new album 'bats'.

GAMA BOMB are today premiering their new album, BATS, via MetalSucks. Accompanying the premiere, the band has also shared a full track-by-track breakdown of the full-length ahead of its November 10 release date. The Irish thrashers eighth full-length follows their recent Bats Over Britain UK tour, and comes ahead of GAMA BOMB's planned Life After Death Horrorfest appearance in Mexico this December.

  • Cover Story

Album review: Gama Bomb – Bats

Oddball Irish thrashers Gama Bomb flap up a storm of silliness on dependably bonkers eighth album Bats…

Album review: Gama Bomb – Bats

‘We were somewhere around Newry, on the edge of the Irish Republic when the drugs began to take hold,’ you can just imagine Philly Byrne gasping. ‘Suddenly, there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Dublin.’

Of the countless pop-cultural references on Gama Bomb ’s gleefully unhinged eighth album, their frontman doesn’t actually riff on Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas. Crank the volume and close your eyes, though, and Bats exudes exactly the same kind of no-brakes chaos.

By their own admission, see, this is the weirdest album the Irish speedsters have ever made. Having waxed lyrical on everything from robotic crimefighters and their corporate antagonists (Beverly Hills Robocop, OCP) to thrash-fighting fascists old and new (Mussolini Mosh, Alt Reich) over the years – once even penning a banger called Smoke The Blow With Willem Dafoe – that’s really saying something. Yet their indefatigable appetite for clever-stupidity keeps bearing fruit.

‘ I’m so freaky ,’ teases retro-futuristic prologue Under The Pyramids. ‘ I’m magnificent .’ No word of a lie. Egyptron wears its Fez with pride, breaking up a 100mph onslaught with melodies that’d get the sphinx grooving – and a cheeky verse from Californian hip-hop legend The Egyptian Lover. Speed Funeral imagines the gnarliest goodbye: strapped to a rocket and fired into outer-space. Living Dead In Beverly Hills lifts from Grieg’s In The Hall Of The Mountain King, just for the craic.

It’s wild how, even after all these years, these maniacs can still blindside with those moments of goofy genius, but they simply refuse to let anyone within earshot stop grinning. Whether in the big pictures (Don’t Get Your Hair Cut is an affectionate, impossibly well-observed ode to battle-jacketed warriors still trapped in the NWOBHM) or the little details (the tooting sax solo that pushes the climactic Bats In Your Hair utterly over the top) this is an outfit whose understanding of metal lore, old-school cool and sheer banter has yet to let them down. And, two decades down the line, Bats is proof that whatever doesn’t kill Gama Bomb simply makes them stranger.

Verdict: 4/5

The Garage, Zebbug

Saturday 23rd February

Over 100 hardy souls defied the sheets of rain and hailstorms to make their way to Zebbug for an evening of fun-filled thrash metal put together by local promoters Metall Insula. Local bands Mythril and Grotium opened the show, but your humble correspondent only managed to arrive in time to see Venice-based act Adversor bludgeon the audience with their primitive and raw albeit enthusiastic take on the genre.

Next up was a rather special set from local four-piece Thrashacre, making a triumphant return to the stage after an 8-year hiatus and greeted with a hero’s welcome from the veterans of the Maltese metal scene in attendance. Drawing on musical and stylistic influences from as wide ranging as 80s NYHC, Rage Against The Machine, System Of A Down and even a touch of old-school Incubus, the band nonetheless keep their thrash credentials well in check by unleashing plenty of high-tempo metal interspersed with James Horton’s shredding leads and vocalist Ryan Farrugia’s lively, infectious stage presence. The band look as though they’re having the time of their lives and one can only hope they’ll stick around the live circuit for some time to come.

Irish titans Gama Bomb, making their debut appearance in Malta, then took to the stage and despite being a man down - lead guitarist Domo Dixon unable to appear due to illness - still managed to present a slick, tight, professional set honed from what is now 17 years of playing together from the bars of Newry, County Down to stages around the world. Rhythm guitarist John Roche proving himself more than able to hold his own on rhythm and lead duties, drummer Paul Caffrey keeping pace nicely with the barrage of riffs and the double act of vocalist Philly Byrne and bassist Joe McGuigan engaging the audience in witty banter between songs.

Gama Bomb’s secret is in their simplicity – they make no apologies for their love of 80s thrash and combined with humorous lyrical themes of zombies, superheroes and The Apocalypse have been able to put out consistently good quality material that the black-clad hordes lap up keep coming back for. Tonight’s performance draws mainly from 2008’s breakthrough album Citizen Brain and its follow-up Tales From The Grave In Space, with the locals cheerfully roaring hits such as ‘Hammer Slammer’ and ‘Slam Anthem’ right back at the band.

Time does fly when you’re having fun and before the audience has had time to get its breath back it’s all over in a flurry of smiles, horns and beer cans lofted high in the air. Metall Insula have succeeded in putting together a great bill that the bad weather couldn’t stop the masses from coming out to support, proving that Malta’s precocious metal scene is still very much alive and kicking.

Good day to you!

Do please take a look elsewhere on this Songkick page for a previous review that I’ve written but I went to see them again pretty soon afterwards, so without further ado…

Gama Bomb undoubtedly have the chops to shine on the big stage and your humble correspondent would certainly love to see them whip up a frenzy on a sunny afternoon at the likes of Bloodstock, Metal Days or Graspop one fine day. However, it’s clear that the band cut their teeth in pubs, clubs and any other small, low-key venue you can think of and this is still the element in which they seem to thrive the most. On this occasion they made a return to Belfast for the first time in a couple of years and gave a understated yet fun and energetic performance that the punters who turned up at Voodoo that night certainly enjoyed to the full.

Tonight they treated the audience to a full showcase of all their major releases, including fan favourites 'Slam Anthem', 'Hammer Slammer' and 'Bullet Belt'. Domo Dixon was back in the fold on leads and executed them as tightly as you hear them on the record, and the band look relaxed and comfortable, Philly Byrne in trademark outlandish garb and cracking jokes with Joe McGuigan and the audience between songs.

To summarise, Gama Bomb pay sincere homage to their beloved thrash genre yet infuse it with their own quirks and wit to keep it fresh and interesting. To my mind, they serve the dual purpose of honouring the old guard and at the same time serving as the perfect gateway into thrash for the uninitiated. Whether the last albums you bought were old Metallica or Nuclear Assault LPs from the 80s, or whether you keep seeing mention of bands such as Havok, Municipal Waste and Toxic Holocaust in the latest Kerrang/Metal Hammer magazine and wonder what it’s all about, there is definitely something for you here – get involved!

ALBUM REVIEW: Bats – Gama Bomb

It’s been 15 years since GAMA BOMB first came to wider attention with Citizen Brain and in some respects, it’s a miracle they’ve survived. Their punked-up party thrash is certainly endearing, but public enthusiasm for this type of music has dwindled since 2009 and plenty of their old tour mates have disappeared, quietly disbanding and returning to ‘normal life.’ There’s only so much mileage you can get out of songs about drunk zombies, so how exactly have they made it this far?

Simply put, it’s because GAMA BOMB don’t know how to write a bad album. They rarely trouble the end-of-year critics’ lists, but their records are always outrageous fun and packed with memorable tunes. 2018’s Speed Between The Lines was a right laugh, and their pandemic-era album Sea Savage was remarkably entertaining given that it was recorded during a massive global crisis. Their latest, the succinctly titled Bats , is no different.

Intro aside, it kicks off with Egyptron , a song that somehow manages to fly past despite being almost six minutes long. It’s fast, energetic and catchy and once again, the lyrics are a big part of the appeal. It tells the story of a cybernetically enhanced undead Pharoah, “mummified in circuitry” and returning to the world of the living to take revenge on humanity. NILE , this ain’t. It has so little to do with actual Egyptology that it makes Abbot And Costello Meet The Mummy look historically accurate, but that’s not the point. This is light-hearted metal music with an emphasis on enjoying yourself, and the scene-stealing cameo by DIY hip-hop legend THE EGYPTIAN LOVER is a very pleasant surprise.

Following this, Living Dead In Beverley Hills is classic GAMA BOMB , a turbocharged speed metal anthem with Halfordian vocals, while Speed Funeral squeezes as much witty wordplay as possible into a whiplash-inducing sugar rush. The majority of the tracks are written with all the excitable enthusiasm of eleven-year-olds who just saw DIE HARD for the first time, but a few moments of seriousness do peak through. Secular Saw for instance, is an indictment of organised religion (albeit with a few chainsaw references to lighten the mood), while Mask Of Anarchy is a paean to optimism in a world that seems increasingly right-wing with every passing election cycle. GAMA BOMB aren’t always renowned for their maturity, but they’ve got an undeniable knack for sounding like your mates encouraging you to re-think your life choices and not sign up for ‘Alpha Male Lifestyle Courses.’ Only in song form.

All of which serves to make Bats an easy-to-like blast of positivity. One rapper and one sax solo aside, it doesn’t do anything different from their previous records and is probably too short, but otherwise, we’ve no complaints. Saving the best song for the finish – the excellent Bats In Your Hair – might be a mistake, but as the smooth jazz outro brings things to a close, it’s hard not to feel like GAMA BOMB have a lot of life left in them yet. Six, seven, EIGHT! EIGHT BATS OUT OF TEN! AH-Ha, AH-ha.

Rating: 8/10
