Working Holiday in United Kingdom

How it works, working holiday in uk (plus).

288 others looking at this too. Next opening is Jul 2024 , with limited spots.

No wonder the UK is such a popular place for a Working Holiday. Besides the lush countryside, charming cities, and dramatic coastlines – it’s the perfect home base while exploring the rest of Europe.

And when you go on a Working Holiday in the UK, you can live and work for up to three years in the country while you discover Europe on your own terms.

You could wing it and try to do everything yourself. Sure, some people do, but more often than not, it’ll be confusing, expensive, anxiety-inducing and time-consuming heading to a land unknown for the first time.

This is an experience you’ll likely only do once, and the last thing you'd want is to be returning home with your tail between your legs just after you had your going away party (& blown all your savings).

But, luckily, we've been working on the solution since 2008 that close to 90,000 others before you have chosen, as the world's leaders in working holidays. What if you could instead:

  • With our  Money-Back Guarantee in place, receive a UK Job Match before you even arrive* – year-round & all-done virtually from home (with no job fairs to travel to & compete at, unlike our competitors).
  • Land a job almost anywhere , from cozy pubs in the English countryside to centuries-old castles in the Scottish Highlands, with the largest network of partner companies loaded with perks like staff accommodation, food & beverage & more!
  • Meet others before you go   through our exclusive app . Join Global Traveller side-trips & meet-up events too.
  • Save time, money, and stress with your own dedicated Trip Coordinator .
  • Get help with  flights, travel insurance, accommodation, visa applications  & more.

The ultimate way to have a hassle-free working holiday. Working to live (and not living to work), meeting other travellers, waking up every day to a new adventure, and making everyone back home severely jealous of all your stories.

Land in the UK prepared & excited, not anxious and scared - life’s too short for that. *For a similar trip with the essentials only, check out this Working Holiday in UK package. Keep a very careful eye on dates though, as capacity for both these trips are limited.

Unlimited extra matches*

When it’s time for somewhere new, tap into our national database of Partner Organisations to keep funding your travels. *No limit on matches when you’ve given required notice to leave & remained professional.

Ask a question

Chat with us online now, or we can call you back for free, 24 hours Mon-Fri.

Can you picture it? You're working at a beautiful old English pub without a worry in the world. The pub hooked you and your new international besties up with accommodation just down the road. You're pouring pints for the locals who all love the bartender. Especially when you’re from overseas with a cool accent and stories from home. It’s a special day. You and your housemate just booked return flights over to Amsterdam for the price of some new sneakers.

And all this sorted without potentially spending over a month or longer hunting for a job in a foreign country with no income and your savings dwindling by the hour!

Get a job sorted before you land with our Guaranteed Job Match Pre-Arrival*, the ultimate way to explore another country without having to chew through your savings like most people who decide to wing it generally do.

Our robust trip planning process, perfected after serving tens of thousands of Global Travellers since 2008, includes visa guidance and a virtual interview you can do from the comfort of home. Our team will be in your corner to answer any questions you or your family may have too, so you can exchange most of those nerves with pure excitement about the adventure of a lifetime ahead.

Accommodation? We can help with that as well. Your first 3 nights are covered at a top-rated hostel in the heart of London. After that, most jobs provide staff housing at a really low rate (but these ones can go quick). If your job doesn’t, our team will provide you all the guidance and tips you need to find something suitable - yet another reason why going with Global means you get the best of the best with access to a local team and office in London (unlike our competitors).

And when it’s time for a change of scenery during or after your initial job, book a short and cheap flight to a place packed with beach clubs, cheap baguettes, or snow-packed alps.

While you're galavanting across Europe, you’re not worried about finding a new job or running out of money. Why?

Because you told your dedicated Trip Coordinator about your plans and that you’d like to secure your next job opportunity, in a completely new and interesting part of the UK before you left.

Our team gets to work and the whole of the UK stretches out in front of you. Will your next job be at a cozy inn south of London? A manor in Oxford? Or at a fairytale-like Castle in the Scottish Highlands?

We’ll leave it up to you. And with the largest network of partner companies – you could land a job almost anywhere in the UK, usually loaded with staff perks.

You’ll have an instant friend group wherever you end up, too – even if you decide to take a job in a tiny town in the Welsh countryside.

Because our social network app – gWorld – connects you with other Global Travellers in your area. So you can go on a hike, meet at the pub, or just talk to someone with the same accent as you.

We take care of pretty much everything so you don’t have to.

BUT! There’s a catch….

Most travellers book their trip 6-12 months in advance, or more! Dates are flexible, but spaces are limited, and intakes are closing off regularly without much notice. So if you’re serious about living in the UK, check dates & prices now to get things started before you’re too late, or too old.

With our Book Now, Decide Later option, you can get started with a small deposit today, and take up to a full year to choose your dates.

We’ll take over from there, helping you with visas, flights, accommodation, and matching you with a job opportunity before you go*.

If you’re after the ultimate, and the best, working holiday to the UK out there, complete with everything you need and worldwide support, click the red box and follow the quick & easy steps to secure your spot. You, your parents and your bank account should thank us later.

If you’re looking for less, but still want to travel with the best, check out our other  Working Holiday in UK package too (but this one is our best & most popular).

Requirements

To qualify for this trip you must meet the visa requirements , and have 6 months of paid work experience by time of arrival.

What extra costs will I have?

Flights, travel insurance, visa, criminal background check, souvenirs & spending money.

Your Working Holiday in UK (Plus) trip is designed to help you find local, seasonal employment as a means to fund your travels further, and for cultural exchange. Our goal is to save you time, money, and stress while eliminating the risk of returning home early. Here’s how we do it:

Before you leave

We’re on your side from the moment you get started. You’ll be assigned a dedicated Trip Coordinator. They’ll guide you through the next steps and answer all your questions. They’ll also help you with the pesky visa. No guesswork – only the right paperwork, approved the first time.

Your personal Travel Concierge will help with flights, insurance, and any add-ons you’d like for your trip. These are real humans too – no robots here.

Most travellers have their job match sorted before they even leave home. This means you can focus on having fun right from the get-go since you're not having to spend weeks finding a job on your own.

Working Holiday jobs & locations in the United Kingdom

Land an entry to mid-level job in the UK which will be fun and social, so you can make friends, learn new skills and have the freedom to explore new places. Located all across the country, here’s a list of the industries most of our UK Partner Organisations are in, and where you can expect to find yourself being matched with too!

  • Hospitality like bars, cafés & restaurants
  • Historic UK Pubs & Bars
  • Scottish Castles
  • Summer Camps
  • Hotels & Manors
  • Labour & Construction

Important to remember:  The host company decides who they hire and for what, so you need to be flexible & open minded. You’ll be matched with something you are suitable for.

Picture yourself catching the London Underground each day and working in one of the most bustling cities in the world. Or perhaps the idea of a 16th-century castle nestled among the countryside is more your scene. We’ve got connections to host companies dotted all over the UK, so you could find yourself working in any of these destinations.

  • Hertfordshire

We'll try for your preferences, but locations are subject to availability at your time of arrival.

Throughout your journey, our cool tech features will support you every step of the way. As a Global Traveller, gain access to gWorld, our personalised app designed to enhance your travel experience. With four international offices, over 100 dedicated staff members, a 24/5 emergency team, and the backing of over 90,000 Global Travellers who have turned their travel dreams into reality with us, rest assured you're in good hands. We also proudly boast the most and best reviews in the biz, and maintain a massive following on our social channels including Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. Embark on your next adventure with confidence and ease. Join us and discover the world in a meaningful way!

While we would love to include flights and insurance in our trip packages, it is not feasible to have a fixed price due to the diverse destinations, trip durations, and individual coverage needs of our travellers from around the globe. However, once you register for the trip, we will assign you a dedicated Travel Concierge. They will work closely with you to arrange the ideal flights and insurance tailored to your specific adventure. Rest assured, our team is here to ensure you have a smooth and hassle-free travel experience from start to finish!

When it comes to accommodation, we have some great options available for you. Many of our partner organisations offer staff accommodation as a fantastic perk. This usually entails a shared apartment or house with other like-minded travelers, conveniently located near your job. The best part is that these accommodations are often available at a subsidised rate, allowing you to save more toward side trips and fun! In the event that staff accommodation is not included with your job match, don't worry. Your Arrival Coordinator will be there to provide you with valuable resources and helpful tips on finding a suitable place to stay.

The Standard and Plus Working Holiday trips offer similar features, such as our comprehensive job matching process. However, there are a couple key differences between the two: Standard: With the Standard trip, you will receive a guaranteed job match prior to your arrival*. Plus: The Plus trip includes a guaranteed job match prior to your arrival*, just like the Standard trip. In addition, it offers the unique benefit of a 2nd job match in an entirely new country! This includes any Working Holiday, Au Pair or Tutor trip we offer, except USA, Germany & South Korea. Visa guidance will also be provided, TCs apply. Along with this, the Plus trip also provides additional tours and a side trip to enhance your experience. If you like the idea of working and travelling in more than one country, the Plus option is best suited for you. It provides the opportunity for ongoing exploration and variety during your time abroad. No need to make a decision right away on which option to choose. If you initially book the Standard trip, you can always upgrade to the Plus trip after getting registered and connecting with your dedicated Trip Coordinator.

While we strive to take your preferences into account, it's important to note that we are not a recruitment agency. Therefore, we cannot guarantee job matches in specific professions, fields, or locations. As a foreign worker on a temporary visa, it can be challenging to compete with locals for more specialised positions. Employers often prioritise candidates they can train and retain in the long term, rather than taking a risk on someone who may leave in a year or two, or less. However, the jobs we help organise on your working holiday will offer a fantastic experience. They will be enjoyable and social, allowing you to make new friends, acquire new skills, and have the freedom to explore exciting new places. Our aim is to provide you with an amazing working holiday experience, where you can embrace adventure and create unforgettable memories.

A job match is a seamless process designed to help you secure a suitable job opportunity. Here's how it works: First, we arrange an interview for you, taking into consideration your preferences whenever possible. The interviews are typically conducted virtually over platforms like Zoom, Skype, or FaceTime, making it convenient for you to participate from the comfort of your home before you embark on your trip. The key to a successful job match is simple: attend the interview on time and approach it just like any other professional interview. By demonstrating professionalism and enthusiasm, you'll increase your chances of securing a job offer without any complications. In the unlikely chance you are unsuccessful with your initial interview, our team will get to work organising you another interview. You can rest assured we are committed to finding the right opportunity for you and guiding you through each and every step of the job matching process to ensure success. For more details, please refer to your booking conditions.

Absolutely! While the jobs we help you land usually provide full-time hours, they often come with flexibility that will allow you to take time off for side trips, exploring, and fun. We understand the importance of travel experiences, and our aim is to provide opportunities that balance work and leisure. While the level of flexibility can vary based on the specific job and employer, we strive to match you with positions that provide allowances or arrangements for time off. This way, you can plan and enjoy additional adventures before, during, or after your work placement!

Ever since our inception in 2008, we have been dedicated to providing exceptional job opportunities to our travellers. We take pride in having built the largest network of partner organisations across the country, all vetted and perfectly suited to host a working holidayer. One of the greatest advantages of going Global is that we streamline the entire process for you, meaning, you won't need to go through the hassle of attending job fairs (like our competitors make you do) or spending countless hours job hunting. We take care of the hard work by understanding your job and location preferences, then connect you with one of our awesome partner organisations. We then ensure you are well-prepared for the interview, to help you land a job before you leave home*. To explore all the amazing options available, we invite you to check out our Working Holiday jobs & locations section located above.

The benefits of doing a Working Holiday trip are numerous. It offers you the opportunity to experience a new country, immerse yourself in a different culture, gain international work experience, develop new skills, make lifelong connections, and create unforgettable memories. It is a chance to combine travel and work while exploring a new destination.

We provide comprehensive support throughout your Working Holiday trip, from the initial planning stages until your return home. Our team is available to assist you with visa applications, job placements, accommodation options, and ongoing support from our worldwide offices while you are overseas, including a 24/5 emergency line. We also provide pre-departure guidance and resources to help you prepare for your adventure.

Absolutely! While the earning potential may vary based on your destination and job type, the income you'll receive is more than sufficient to support you comfortably while abroad. It can cover all your living expenses, accommodation, transportation, and even allows for savings to explore your new home or continue travelling afterward. Additionally, many of our partner organisations offer fantastic perks like discounted staff housing, food and beverage, ski passes, and more, helping you save money and make the most of your Working Holiday experience.

After the last unexpected disruption to travel caused by the..c word..people are now more eager than ever to venture out and explore the world, determined not to miss out on any experiences. Global Work & Travel works on a first-in-best-dressed basis. Booking earlier ensures that you donā€™t miss out on the best intake, season, placements and more! We recommend our travellers take 6-12+ months to plan their trip for a reason - to make sure youā€™ve got everything organised perfectly, stress-free. As a Global Traveller youā€™ll get exclusive access to gWorld, our personalised app where you can keep all of your important documents and trip details in one spot and gain insider access to everything Global. This is where you will find exclusive Marketplace Deals, a unique social network to connect you with other like-minded Global Travellers, access to our Academy with an ever-growing range of skills & languages, and so much more. Think all of your favourite apps merged into one, but like, better? Why not give yourself something to look forward to by booking that trip!

Yes you can! Simply tell your Trip Coordinator after booking that your friend is also going and they can link your profiles. For most of our trips we should be able to have you and your friends placed together or nearby. Meaning that you can live, work, play & travel together! But wait there's more! Not only can you travel the world with your besties at your side, you can also earn some extra cash towards your own trip just by referring your friends to Global Work & Travel. You can learn more about the great referral rewards program inside your gWorld account once you join. And for those who decide to go-it-solo, weā€™ve made it easier to meet other Global Travellers in the same region as you. Just like any other social platform, youā€™ll be able to interact, share, chat and meet with some really cool people who are doing trips just like you!

At Global Work & Travel, we share a deep love for animals and fully understand the special bond you have with your pet. We recognise the challenges of embarking on a trip without them. Due to travel restrictions, requirements, and limited pet-friendly accommodations among our host organisations, we regretfully cannot facilitate their inclusion in the journey. However, many of our customers choose to entrust their pets to a family member or friend, embark on their adventure, and return home to wagging tails and furry cuddles.

We know that life can get in the way of travel, so all our trips come with a great deal of flexibility. In most cases, if you cannot travel on your selected date, you can place your trip on hold to deal with whatever is holding you back, and continue in the future without incurring any penalty. You may also have the option of transferring to an entirely different trip and destination as well, or even transferring your trip to a friend or family member. In the event that you need to outright cancel your trip, if you give us 84* days notice you can do so with only a 50% cancellation fee. Your refund of the balance will come in the form of a Store Credit which you can put toward any other trip that we offer, including tours through third-party providers, as well as holidays through DealsAway.com, and is valid for 2 years from date of issue. As international travel can be complex, your options are based on the progress of your trip organisation and our support team can assist you in finding the best solution for your needs.

Horrible horrible company

Horrible horrible company. Literally a scam. Pressures young people who have barely any money to pay them for services that anyone can do for a fraction of the cost. And then when you realize this, theyā€™re cancellation policy is a joke, they give you ā€œstore creditā€ for another trip.

So helpful!

As this is my first time travelling abroad alone, I thought it would be best to go throught a company. Global Work and Travel have been an amazing help so far; they've helpfully answered any questions I have, given me an insight as to what it may be like and are willing to set me up with the starting necessities I need for my trip. All the Global staff i have communicated with so far have been nothing but kind and useful. I would absolutely consider booking through them in the future.

Horrible turnover/ frustrating experience with travel concierge

I would give my trip coordinator 5 stars. My travel concierge, however, changed people 3 times. Someone new would call and introduce themselves as my travel concierge and I have no idea who I ended up with. Gave me very little info to the point I had to go back and talk to my trip coordinator. Didnā€™t include the things we spoke about in proposed plan originally and didnā€™t tell me they would be sending a confirmation email. I guess the travel concierge is just supposed to take your money for your flight and then hand you back over to the trip coordinator. Thank god, Iā€™d rather work with my trip coordinator instead of a 4th person whoā€™s not going to give me any information and make me feel like giving them my money is scam.

Global has made planning this trip stress free!

Global has been very helpful throughout this process. I have never booked a trip this big before and they helped me so much. They made the process stress free by laying out everything for me and giving me all the details I needed to feel confident in my travel decisions. With all of the helpful documents and emails provided, I was able to understand the process fully which made me feel safe. As someone who is a big planner/organizer, they really helped me take care of all the small details I was worried about. Every time I had a random question, I could ask it at any time of day and get an answer very quickly, and even be provided more information.

Itā€™s a complete scam!!!

Do not go through Global work and travel unless you want to waste thousands of pounds for absolutely nothing! everything they promise you is absolute rubbish, you donā€™t get secure jobs and if you do it takes the mick as the work environment is toxic and a complete waste of your time! the hostel they set me up in was horrible conditions and the people i met agreed on this. they promise you trips that donā€™t happen and after all of this you still have to pay for your flights, visas, accommodation, etc. there is no benefit in going through global work and travel especially if youā€™re young and first time travelling as you wonā€™t get the support you are promised. iā€™m really disappointed in them as i spent so so much money to travel and have a good time and when i actually got there i was put in a horrible situation to fend for myself, which being 19 and never been so far away from home was such a scary situation. i will speak my experience on every platform i can possibly find as i donā€™t think this company should be able to scam as many as they did! I know for a fact iā€™m not alone in this situation as my very close friend went through the same situation except worse. Please Please Please do more research and look into all of this as it has truly scared me for in the future when i would like to travel else where. i am heartbroken as my dream was to travel and they have completely destroyed and ruined that for me. They are a massive scam and will take so much away from you. I reached out to them regarding my experience and instead of supporting me, they were quite frankly rude and disrespectful by arguing with me and calling me names. I and everyone else who iā€™ve spoken to that went through similar situations deserve better than this! Iā€™m sorry to rant on and be like this as iā€™m not usually someone who will do this and never want to be the type to write negatively but it needed to be done so i can be seen, heard and prevent others for having to suffer the way i did Thank you.

Had to cancel bank card. Massive scam

Honestly a terrible company to work with. You will loose your money if you no longer are interested in your travel. They do not refund any money even if you cancel (please read the terms and conditions they have). Iā€™ve had to cancel my bank card just to get away from them stealing all my money. Donā€™t risk it Iā€™d rather sort a working holiday out on my own.

Global Work & Travel UK: Reviews

Fantastic experience: Just arrived in London and had my orientation. Kirsty was extremely informative and helpful. She set up my bank appointments, sim card and everything else I that I was worried about before moving here.

Fantastic experience: Global work and travel co have been amazing from start to finish- everyone has been incredibly helpful and genuinely excited for our new adventure! It has been such a huge relief to know that everything has been sorted for us andthat we have support for the entire duration of time here, especially after travelling through Europe and coming over a bit exhausted. Thank you for everything:)

Fantastic experience: Arriving here and finding the hostel was all very easy! After our orientation we feel so much more comfortable and safe and like we have support whenever we need. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming and happy to help whenever they can.

Positive experience: Once you book onto a trip you get a call the next day to check for eligibility and to take payment. I had Millie as my trip coordinator she had an enthusiastic personality so I enjoyed working with her to get me ready for my trip. She left half way through the trip organisation to follow a new career path so I got Ross! His been brilliant. His professional, updates me regularly, answers all questions and I can always call if I have any questions. I couldnā€™t have asked for a better coordinator than Ross. His exceeded my expectations of the global work & travel. Pros: - I have felt very well supported to plan my trip. - Gworld has all your documents organised well. - I was supported with my resume as it needed some extra work! Cons: - limited training opportunities. So you do have to be open minded with areas that may not necessary be your first choice. - It is very costly to book on to an internship or working holiday & as a young professional I have had to use / save some money up to be able to afford it. You also need some money saved up for your arrival especially if your trip does not include accommodation. - You do enquire extra prices along the way that are not included aswell e.g. flights, police record, visa fee. I think the ACRO and visa fee should perhaps be included.

Fantastic experience: Global has been great, every ran smoothly and made my dream trip happen all the way to Australia. I would 100 percent recommend them to anyone, they look after you every step of the way till landing and then further help in Australia, srtting up bank account, tax etc... im on 3rd day in Australia and im loving it.

Fantastic experience: I did the Sea Turtle Conservation Project in Costa Rica for one month and I had an amazing time! Kailah Kearns was assigned as my Trip Coordinator close to my departure because my original Coordinator got promoted. Kailah made me feel so confident in travelling solo and was the most helpful person along the way. She was ready and willing to help me sort out any problems and make me feel at ease especially because it was my first time traveling alone. I have to recognize her because she did an amazing job and I will definitely request her again if I travel with Global Work and Travel again! Thank you Kailah :))

Fantastic experience: Thank you Global Work and Travel for helping me to make my dreams come true!!! You guys have made the transition absolutely seamless and enjoyable. Could recommend you enough!!

Fantastic experience: I was absolutely so scared as I have never done anything like this before and super skeptical. however though global goes above and beyond and I had an amazing travel concierge named Stacey and she is the most kindest person and answered all my questions all my Phone calls was so patient with me would 10/10 recommend her to anyone she assured me and helped so much with my nerves making more excited got my trip. Will definitely book with them again

Fantastic experience: A very good and helpful team, I had no real idea of what I was going to do when I went to Scotland until I found out about Global Work and Travel, they helped me set myself up with a job and a place to stay. All while having a fantastic team, some of the nicest people out there, would and have recomended this to others. :)

Fantastic experience: Tiare has been a wonderful Travel Coordinator. She has been very helpful, has guided us through every application and was always quick to reply to any questions we had.

Fantastic experience: I signed up with Global Work & Travel last year during peak COVID and they have been nothing but amazingly helpful, kind, considerate, informative and just everything youā€™d want in a Travel Agent. I 100% recommend using Global Work & Travel for any overseas trips that include working or studying. I will definitely use them again in the future. Iā€™d like to shoutout all my coordinators who have been nothing but absolute legends with this process! Stacey, Sam, Ashlea, Tiare & Piper M. Thank you all for all your hard work towards my trip, I wouldnā€™t of been able to do this so smoothly otherwise. 8 weeks until I leave for Canada and I am over the moon knowing that I have people to contact if I get stuck / need help, any issues with work or my accommodation I can go to my travel coordinators for help and any great recommendations on food & places to visit, they sort ya out! Bloody legends 10/10 recommend

Fantastic experience: I found Global Work and Travel randomly one day on google and since I decided I wanted to go on an adventure they've been very helpful and supportive the whole way, from answering any and every question I had to booking everything for me and getting me a job interview. They are prompt and very good at checking in with you along your journey and letting you know they are there for you continuously. Thank you Global Work and Travel! I would recommend these guys! ^^

Fantastic experience: Was very skeptical about booking with a company online I hadnā€™t really heard much about before but global work and travel were amazing! Would 100% recommend to anyone who is looking to travel with help along the way. Iā€™m currently in Thailand volunteering with dogs and then off travelling for a month afterwards and I wouldnā€™t have been able to do it without the help from Julian and Millie! They were happy to help me through my journey and answer ALL of my questions!

Fantastic experience: Honestly i was quite anxious planning this trip, as its my first time travelling solo, and especially with Covid the last couple of years i was always hesitant because everything was so unpredictable with the ability to travel, however, the team at Global Work & Travel have gone to great efforts to make sure my upcoming trip was catered and suited perfectly for what i was looking, they were always patient and nurturing with my decisions .The ladies i was assigned with to help me (Stacey, Anastasia (formerly) and Betty) have always been so professional and friendly and have made me feel confident and excited. to explore the world. I would 100% recommend this company, as to how easy this trip has been planned out. Cant wait to start my new journey !

Positive experience: Very friendly and helpful with all processes, getting Visa and flights, getting a SIM for my phone, bank account, and job interviews. I am a worry-wart so it was great that Kim was always happy to answer my questions and concerns, and I asked A LOT. Everything worked out and I was able to get a job interview and position right before I arrived so I didn't have to worry about it when I got there. They arranged a bunch of group activities and if I couldn't make them I can save and reschedule for another time which is awesome! The only "downside" is the cost of flights and insurance but overall, if you're new to traveling like I am and needed the help it's worth it. It's cheaper to do it on your own but I had them helping every step and didn't have to worry about cancellations or any unforeseen events messing up my trip!

I can't wait to travel on super cheap flights through Europe and tick off at least 10 more locations in the next few months Thankyou so much for giving me the opportunity to come to London and explore more of the world with no regrets

Global Travel Taskforce

In February 2021, the Prime Minister asked the Secretary of State for Transport to convene a successor to the Global Travel Taskforce, building on the recommendations set out in November 2020. The taskforce published its report on 9 April 2021, setting out a framework for a safe and sustainable return to international travel when the time is right. The taskforce sought input and views from industry stakeholders. The Secretary of State confirmed on 7 May that non-essential international travel will resume on 17 May.

Terms of reference of the 2021 Global Travel Taskforce

The Global Travel Taskforce: Safe Return of International Travel is the successor to the Global Travel Taskforce which made a series of recommendations in November 2020.

The Global Travel Taskforce will report by 12 April 2021 with recommendations aimed at facilitating a return to international travel as soon as possible, while still managing the risk from imported cases and variants of concern.

Following that, the government will determine when international travel should resume, which will be no earlier than 17 May 2021. A decision on the reopening of international travel will need to consider:

  • the global and domestic epidemiological picture
  • the prevalence and location of any variants of concern
  • the progress of vaccine roll-outs here and abroad
  • what more weā€™ve learnt about the efficacy of vaccines on variants, and their impact on transmission, hospitalisation and deaths

This taskforce will be led by the Department for Transport ( DfT ) and report to the Prime Minister. Its aim ā€“ in the context of the decision above ā€“ will be to work in partnership with industry and international partners to develop a risk-based framework that could facilitate the return of international travel, while still managing the risk from imported cases and variants.

That will include making use of the measures the government already has in place (such as testing and isolation) and building on the recommendations from the Global Travel Taskforce last year .

Scope and timing

The taskforce will:

  • consider policy proposals to set out a possible pathway to safely reopen international travel, taking account of scientific and clinical data
  • in partnership with industry, develop an implementation plan for the adoption of any recommendations to enable government, industry and consumers to prepare for when any decisions are taken
  • consider how to implement recommendations from the previous Global Travel Taskforce, such as bubbles, to facilitate tourist and business travel
  • ensure that any shorter-term changes act as a bridge to longer-term objectives on delivering vaccine certification to facilitate travel (noting this work is being conducted in parallel) and global standardisation of border measures

The taskforce will report to the Prime Minister on 12 April 2021 with an implementation plan to follow.

The taskforce will be a cross-government endeavour, with the Secretary of State for Transport reporting to the Prime Minister. It will involve collaboration between officials from:

  • Department for Transport
  • Department for Health and Social Care
  • Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office
  • Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport
  • Public Health England
  • Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy
  • HM Treasury
  • Home Office
  • Department for International Trade
  • Cabinet Office C-19 Taskforce

Officials from the Scottish and Welsh Governments, and Northern Ireland Executive will be closely involved in the taskforceā€™s work.

The taskforce will seek to achieve a joint approach while noting that health matters are devolved, so decision-making and implementation may differ across the nations.

The taskforce will also take into account evidence and data from the scientific communities and our international community.

In addition, itā€™s vital that any proposals have been developed in partnership with industry, taking account of the vast experience from outside of government.

The taskforce will, therefore, establish working groups to feed into its final report. Most critical will be that established with the travel industry, given the need for proposals to be workable.

In addition, the taskforce will consult to inform its report:

  • international partners ā€“ to discuss options for bilateral pilots and the standards needed to facilitate safe international travel
  • the tourism sector and local business leaders ā€“ to consider how international travel can support economic recovery
  • academia and policy institutes ā€“ to provide innovative solutions to the challenges the sector is facing

As with last yearā€™s taskforce, the 2021 taskforce has worked with a range of industry stakeholders ā€“ covering aviation, maritime, international rail and the visitor economy ā€“ to develop the recommendations set out in the latest report .

Terms of reference of the 2020 Global Travel Taskforce

The taskforceā€™s work will include:

  • considering how a testing regime for international arrivals could be implemented to boost safe travel to and from the UK
  • what steps we can take to facilitate business and tourist travel on a bilateral and global basis, through innovative testing models and other non-testing means
  • more broadly, what steps we can take to increase consumer confidence and reduce the barriers to a safe and sustainable recovery of international travel

The ongoing travel corridor process and related policy will not be within scope of the taskforce.

A core function of the taskforce will be to afford policy-makers a chance to discuss these issues further with those outside of government, as it considers robust and sustainable proposals that will facilitate safer international travel. In its work, the taskforce will therefore seek to consult representatives from:

  • the transport industry, to discuss shared challenges, the value of the sector to the economy, and the future of international travel
  • international partners, to discuss different approaches to health measures at the border, and what standards and practices are needed to maintain safe international travel
  • the tourism sector and local business leaders, to consider the economic impact on domestic tourism, and how international travel can support economic recovery
  • the private testing sector, to consider capacity constraints, pricing, and how quickly testing capacity can be rolled out
  • academia and policy institutes to provide insight and innovative solutions to the challenges the sector is facing

This engagement will include a series of workshops with the above groups, on which further detail will be provided shortly.

The taskforce will report to the Prime Minister no later than early November 2020, setting out recommendations for how the UK can support the recovery of international travel, including how we can increase consumer confidence, and continue to provide global leadership in the setting of standards for border health measures.

The taskforce will be chaired by the Secretary of State for Transport and the and Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. It will include collaboration between officials from departments across government, as listed below, and will liaise with the travel sector in order to work on the operationalisation of testing approaches designed to reduce self-isolation.

  • NHS Test and Trace
  • Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government
  • The Home Office
  • The No 10 / Cabinet Office C-19 Taskforce

Officials from the Scottish and Welsh Governments, and Northern Ireland Executive will be closely involved in the taskforceā€™s work. The taskforce will seek to achieve a 4 nations approach, while noting that health matters are devolved, so decision-making and implementation may differ across the nations.

Strikes at Heathrow Airport are taking place over the next few weeks, with the first one already under way.

Staff at the UK's biggest airport are set to walk out during the early bank holiday in May, with their union warning planes could be "delayed, disrupted and grounded".

The average price paid for comprehensive motor insurance rose 1% in the first quarter of the year, according to industry data indicating an easing in the steep rises seen last year.

The latest tracker issued by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) showed a 1% increase on the previous three months to Ā£635.

That was despite the average claim paid rising 8% to reach a record of Ā£4,800, the body said.

The ABI said the disparity showed that its members were "absorbing" additional costs and not passing them on.

Nevertheless, the average policy was still 33%, or Ā£157, higher between January and March compared to the same period last year.

Getir , the grocery delivery app, has abandoned a European expansion that is set to result in the loss of around 1,500 jobs in the UK.

Sky News had previously revealed that the Turkey-based company, which means "to bring" in Turkish, had  successfully raised money from investors to fund its withdrawals  from the UK, Germany and the Netherlands.

It had already departed other countries including Italy and Spain.

The exits were prompted by growing losses linked to the company's rapid expansion.

Waitrose is launching an exclusive range of products with popular chef Yotam Ottolenghi today.

The Israeli-British chef is famous for his Middle Eastern and Mediterranean-inspired food, and has worked with the supermarket to release products including a pasta sauce, spice blend and shawarma marinade.

It is the first time Ottolenghi has partnered with a supermarket in such a way.

The full range will be available in Waitrose shops, Waitrose.com and Ottolenghi.co.uk from today, while a selection of products will be available from the supermarket on Deliveroo and Uber Eats.

An introductory 20% off offer is being launched until 18 June.

The range includes:

  • Ottolenghi Miso Pesto 165g (Ā£4)
  • Ottolenghi Kalamata Olive & Harissa Sauce  350g (Ā£4.50)
  • Ottolenghi Pomegranate, Rose & Preserved Lemon Harissa 170g (Ā£5)
  • Ottolenghi Green Harissa 170g (Ā£5)
  • Ottolenghi Aleppo & Other Chillies Blend (Ā£3.95)
  • Ottolenghi Sweet & Smokey Blend (Ā£3.95)
  • Ottolenghi Citrus & Spice Blend (Ā£3.95)
  • Ottolenghi Red Chilli Sauce (Ā£4.50)
  • Ottolenghi Shawarma Marinade (Ā£4)

Ottolenghi said he had "always been super eager to get our flavours onto people's dinner plates nationwide, not just in London, without having to cook it from scratch every single time".

He added: "I hate to admit it but the pasta sauce already features heavily in my home kitchen, when no one is looking."

The cost of bread, biscuits and beer could increase this year due to the impact of the unusually wet autumn and winter on UK harvests.

Research suggests that production of wheat, oats, barley and oilseed rape could drop by four million tonnes (17.5%) compared with 2023.

The wet weather has resulted in lower levels of planting, while flooding and storms over winter caused farmers more losses.

The predictions come just as the rate of price increases on many food items begins to slow as inflation falls.

The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) analysed forecasts from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHBD) and government yield data.

It found a "real risk" of beer, biscuits and bread becoming more expensive if the poor harvest increases costs for producers, according to its lead analyst Tom Lancaster.

Beer prices could be affected because the wet weather is still disrupting the planting of spring crops such as barley, the ECIU said.

And potatoes might also see a price hike in the coming months, with growers warning of a major shortage in the autumn due to persistent wet weather.

When I think about the toys of my childhood - my pink Barbie car, my Gameboy Micro, my collection of Pokemon cards - I can't tell you where they went.

Maybe they were shipped off to a charity shop at some point... Or perhaps they're in the attic?

While my hot pink Gameboy Micro is lost to the void of time (or a cardboard box somewhere in my mum's house), other versions of it are selling on eBay for Ā£100 or more.

And there are Pokemon cards selling for anything from a tenner to hundreds or even thousands of pounds.

It's possible you also have items at home that are a collector's dream.

Gumtree says its collectables category is already proving to be a "hotbed of activity" this year, with listings up 22% in 2024 so far.

Its most popular items include rare stamps, coins, war memorabilia and Pokemon cards.

Spring is often the most popular time for buying and selling collectibles, with demand spiking in March and April.

We've enlisted the help of TV presenter and collectables expert Tracy Martin to give an idea of what could make you an easy buck.

Old toys making a 'retro comeback'

Tracy explains that while trends change, vintage toys tend to stand the test of time.

"Toys are always going to be popular because they tap into nostalgia, our childhood memories," she says, explaining that adults like to buy the toys they used to have.

Perhaps you were into cars, and you've got some old diecast vehicles from Matchbox, Corgi or Dinky Toys.

A quick look on toy auction site Vectis.co.uk shows a Corgi Toys "James Bond" Aston Martin estimated to sell for between Ā£600 to Ā£700 - while others are likely to fetch Ā£50 to Ā£60.

Sindy dolls are also particularly sought after - particularly those from the 1960s - and Barbie dolls from the 1990s too.

Pokemon cards have seen a "massive surge", Tracy says, with people paying "thousands and thousands of pounds" for good unopened sets.

She's even seen examples of people paying Ā£16,000 upwards.

Another up-and-coming market is games consoles, such as Gameboys, vintage consoles and PlayStations, which are making a "retro comeback".

What else could earn you some cash?

Tracy says there's currently a surge in people wanting to buy "mid century" furniture, which is dated to roughly 1945 to 1965 and typically uses clean lines and has a timeless feel.

Vintage Danish furniture is sought after, particularly tables and chairs with good designer names such as Wegner, Verner Panton and Arne Jacobsen.

Prices range from the low hundreds into the thousands.

People will also look out for vintage framed prints by artists such as Tretchikoff, J.H. Lynch and Shabner - these can range in price from Ā£50 upwards to a few hundred pounds plus.

Vintage clothes, handbags and shoes can fetch a good price - but you can also invest in modern pieces.

Tracy suggests looking out for good classic designs with high-end designer names such as Gucci, Chanel, Dior and Louis Vuitton.

Modern designers such as Irregular Choice, Vendula and Lulu Guinness are also collected.

Collaborations with designers and celebrities can do well as they're often limited edition.

For example, Tracy says the H&M x Paco Rabanne maxi silver sequin dress retailed at Ā£279.99 last year but now sells for in excess of Ā£600.

When it comes to shoes, "the quirkier the design the better" - so look out for brands such as Irregular Choice and Joe Browns.

Converse and Dr Martens collaborations also do well, depending on the design and condition, as well as Adidas and Nike limited edition trainers.

What's the best way to sell?

Tracy recommends to always research before selling your items, as they might perform better on different platforms and you can also get an idea of how much they sell for.

For example, Vinted can be a good place to sell clothes and shoes, while other items might be better suited for sale on Gumtree, eBay or Etsy.

Tracy's favourite way to sell is through auction - especially if there are specialist sales.

Vectis is one of the biggest and most popular for toy selling.

Interests in different periods and items can go up and down, but for the time being vintage pieces from the 1980s and 90s are popular.

How much you'll be able to get from an item often takes into account its rarity, condition, whether it reflects a period in time, and if it's got a good name behind it.

You never know - you might be sitting on a treasure trove.

Annual mortgage repayments have increased by up to 70% since 2021, according to new data from Zoopla .

The biggest impact of rising interest rates has been in southern England where house prices are higher.

Across the South West, South East and East of England, the annual mortgage cost for an average home is Ā£5,000 higher than previously. This rises to Ā£7,500 in London.

But the universal uptick in mortgage costs has been less pronounced in other parts of the UK, with the North East seeing a Ā£2,350 increase.

In a bid to tackle inflation, the Bank of England has raised the base rate from 0.1% in December 2021 to a 16-year high of 5.25% now.

The Zoopla research looked at the average home buyer taking out a 70% loan-to-value mortgage.

This week seems to be starting where last week left off - with three major lenders announcing further hikes in mortgage rates.

Amid uncertainty of the timing of interest rate cuts from the Bank of England  this year, swap rates (which dictate how much it costs lenders to lend) have been rising in recent weeks.

Financial markets currently see two rate cuts by the Bank of England this year.

We've reported on a string of rate bumps from the high street over the last 10 days, and this morning NatWest, Santander and Nationwide moved.

In its second hikes announcement in less than a week, NatWest laid out increases across its full range of residential and buy-to-let fixed deals of up to 0.22%.

Santander, meanwhile, announced increases for both fixed and tracker deals across their residential and buy-to-let products - up to 0.25%.

The same hikes are being imposed for a range of Nationwide deals.

All of these will kick in tomorrow.

Amit Patel, adviser at Trinity Finance, told Newspage it was "not a great start to the week".

"This is not good news for borrowers," he said.

Where will the base rate go this year?

The majority of the bets, according to LSEG data, are on the first cut coming in August (previously this was June) and the second in December.

This would take Bank rate from the current level of 5.25% to 4.75%.

Disabled people could receive vouchers instead of monthly payments under proposed changes to Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

The changes could see people being provided with either one-off grants for specific costs such as home adaptation, or being directed to "alternative means of support" rather than financial support.

Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride is set to announce plans today to overhaul the way disability benefits work.

In a Green Paper due to be published alongside Mr Stride's statement to the Commons, ministers will set out plans to reform Personal Independence Payments (PIP), the main disability benefit, through changes to eligibility criteria and assessments.

The plans also include proposals to "move away from a fixed cash benefit system", meaning people with some conditions, such as depression and anxiety, will no longer receive regular payments but rather get improved access to treatment if their condition does not involve extra costs.

Speaking to Sky News earlier, Mr Stride said: "I want us to have a grown-up, sensible conversation about a benefit called PIP that has not been reviewed in over a decade.

"And I want to ask the question, is it fit for purpose given the world that we're in today, in which mental health issues sadly present more of an issue than they did a decade ago."

A fresh high for the FTSE 100 to start the week.

The index of leading shares in London was 0.5% up at 8,179 in early dealing.

The gains were led by miners and financial stocks.

Dragging on the performance were some consumer-facing brands including JD Sports and Flutter Entertainment.

One other development of note to mention is that stubbornly high oil price.

A barrel of Brent crude is currently trading almost 1% down on the day.

But it remains at $88 a barrel.

The market has been pulled by various forces this month, with hopes of a rebound in demand in China among them.

The latest decline is said to reflect peace talks being held between Israel and Hamas.

A demand for smaller homes has driven growth in UK property prices early in 2024, according to research by Halifax.

Data from the bank's house price index suggests annual property price growth hit 1.9% in February this year - a significant rise from -4.1% just three months prior.

That equates to a rise in prices of Ā£5,318 over the past year.

It follows interest rates stabilising, Halifax says, after a sharp rise over the past two years which squeezed mortgage affordability.

A key driver behind rising prices, Halifax says, has been first-time buyers, who made up 53% of all homes bought with a mortgage in 2023 - the highest proportion since 1995.

And it's smaller homes that have recorded the biggest increases in price growth in the early part of this year - with buyers adjusting their expectations to compensate for higher borrowing costs.

Flats and terraced houses made up 57% of all homes purchased by first-time buyers last year.

This varies by region - for example, in London, flats and terraced homes accounted for 90% of all first-time buyer purchases.

Challenges remain

However, Amanda Bryden, head of Halifax mortgages, said "it's important not to gloss over the challenges" facing the UK housing market, given the "impact of higher interest rates on mortgage affordability" and "continued lack of supply of new homes".

"But scratch beneath the surface and there is a more nuanced story, one which shows that demand for different property types in different parts of the country can vary hugely," she added.

"As interest rates have stabilised and buyers adjust to the new economic reality of owning a home, one way to compensate for higher borrowing costs is to target smaller properties.

"This is especially true among first-time buyers, who have proven to be resilient over recent years, and now account for the largest proportion of homes purchased with a mortgage in almost 30 years."
