Small Group Sightseeing Tour of the Golden Circle & Kerid Volcanic Crater

Small Group Sightseeing Tour of the Golden Circle & Kerid Volcanic Crater

Description

Join this classic sightseeing adventure around the three world-famous sites of the Golden Circle, as well as the lesser-known volcanic crater-lake Kerið. This is an essential tour with a unique twist and is sure to delight anyone coming to Iceland to see the sights.

Furthermore, there is a maximum of nineteen passengers per minibus, ensuring your trip is both personalized and comfortable. You will be picked up from your hotel or guesthouse in Reykjavík in the morning, then head to the first location on this incredible trail: Þingvellir National Park.

Þingvellir is a fascinating place for its geology and beauty, as it is located directly between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. This rift valley, which runs all the way through Iceland, is more visible here than in any other part of the country. The tension created by how the plates are pulling apart means the area has many ravines filled with crystal clear water and beautiful stretches of moss-coated lava rock.

Þingvellir is the only UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Icelandic mainland, although this has nothing to do with the park’s geology. The reason for this is its history; in 930 AD, early settlers formed a representative-style parliament here that still continues to this day, making Þingvellir the original site of the world's longest-running continuous parliament. As you walk through this area, you will find many information signs discussing its long and fascinating history.

Following Þingvellir, you will head to the Haukadalur Valley, a geothermal area renowned for its geysers. The greatest of these, which gave all others their name, Geysir itself, is inactive at the moment, but it’s nearby neighbour, Strokkur, erupts every ten minutes, blasting water up to 40 metres high. You will have a chance to see it go off several times, as you wander around the area’s many hot-springs and steaming vents.

The final stop on the traditional Golden Circle is Iceland’s most famous and distinguishable waterfall, Gullfoss. Otherwise known as ‘the Golden Falls’, this magnificent feature drops in two tiers into an ancient valley with enormous power. In fair weather, it is possible to walk to a platform right where the water is falling for the best views, and there are also viewing platforms opposite and above it.

While most Golden Circle tours would leave back to Reykjavík at this point, you get an additional stop; you will head to the volcanic crater lake Kerið. This is a stunning natural feature, 270 metres wide and over 55 metres deep. The rocks surrounding the water are stained fiery reds and oranges, which contrast beautifully with the azure lake which sits in the crater year round.

Experience the Golden Circle in an essential sightseeing minibus tour, and the chance to visit Kerið is a great bonus. Do not miss your opportunity to jump aboard this budget-friendly tour. Check availability by choosing a date.

Kerid Crater, located in the Icelandic countryside, is a natural wonder that should be on every nature lover's bucket list. As part of the Golden Circle route, the crater is easily accessible with guided tours like Golden Circle Day Tours. The vivid contrast of the red volcanic rocks and the turquoise blue waters of the crater lake make for stunning photo opportunities, not to mention the panoramic views of the crater and surrounding area landscapes that are simply breathtaking. This guide is the perfect tool to explore the crater and learn about its formation, history, and the legends that surround it. So, put on some comfortable shoes and get ready to immerse yourself in the wonders of nature at Kerid Crater.

About Kerið Volcano

The Kerid Crater is a natural wonder situated in Iceland's Golden Circle. It was formed over 3,000 years ago due to volcanic activity. This beautiful crater lake is 170 meters wide and 55 meters deep, and has mineral-rich waters that change colors during the day. The stunning contrast between the red and black volcanic rocks and greenery in the surrounding area of the crater makes it even more breathtaking. People from all over the world come to witness this marvel of nature.

golden circle tour with kerid crater

Visiting Iceland's crater is a must for any traveler because walking around the rim or descending to the bottom provides a one-of-a-kind view of the country's stunning natural scenery.

The Vibrant Blue Gem

golden circle tour with kerid crater

One of the most visually stunning geological wonders in Iceland is Kerið, a volcanic crater lake situated in the Grímsnes, area of south Iceland. This vibrant blue gem is part of the Western Volcanic Zone, which includes the Reykjanes peninsula and the Langjökull Glacier. Kerið is only 6,500 years old and is among the top three most famous volcanic craters in Iceland. The caldera is around 55 meters deep, 170 meters wide, and 270 meters across, consisting of a unique red volcanic rock.

Natural Wonder

At Kerið, hikers can descend one of the sloping walls covered in deep green moss and enjoy the breathtaking aquamarine lake at the bottom. Although the lake is not deep, its bright color is a result of the minerals present in the soil.

golden circle tour with kerid crater

Many people think that Kerið was formed by a volcanic explosion, but in reality, it was created by a cone volcano that erupted and emptied its magma supply. The cone eventually collapsed under its own weight into the empty magma chamber, forming the crater that we see today. The water found at the bottom of the crater is not due to rainfall, but rather sits at the same level as the surrounding water table.

You can visit Kerid crater lake, a volcanic lake that is 3,000 years old, in South Iceland along the Golden Circle route. The depth of the lake ranges from 7 to 14 meters depending on rainfall and other conditions. The water is an uncommon and stunningly bright blue-green color. You can take a simple hike around the crater and enjoy the sun and the breathtaking scenery!

crater lake, iceland, volcanic crater

Kerið is known for its unique red volcanic rock slopes and is a crater lake that is 170 meters wide, 270 meters in circumference, and 55 meters deep. Compared to other crater lakes in the region, Kerið is particularly famous for having one of the most intact calderas.

One interesting feature of this crater is its age - it's only about 3000 years old, which makes it around half the age of the other geological features nearby. You can take a simple hike and walk around on the rim of the crater to get up close to it or you can use the ladder to descend to the lake.

Please note that there is a small fee for visiting the Kerið crater and walking to the crater lake during your self-drive tour. The fee has been recently implemented to support the landowners in preserving and protecting the crater, as well as maintaining the parking lot.

Where Is Kerið?

Kerið, situated in the Grímsnes area in south part of South Iceland, is one of the volcanic hills known as 'Tjarnarhólar'. It belongs to the Western Volcanic Zone of Iceland, which also includes the Reykjanes peninsula and the Langjokull glacier.

GPS coordinates of Kerið: 64.0413° N, 20.8851° W

HOW DO I GET TO KERIÐ?

Kerid is conveniently located right off the ring road and can be reached within a 40-minute drive from both Thingvellir National Park and Haukadalur.

Kerið can be easily located on the main road connecting the golden circle to Selfoss. It is only 15 km north of Selfoss, right off highway 35. If you take route 427, the distance between Kerið and the Blue Lagoon is 105 km.

Even if you only want to take a break and a nice walk and stretch your legs, it's worth stopping at this place if you're driving the Golden Circle.

If you're renting a car, there's a car park right next to the crater for your convenience.

ORIGIN OF KERIÐ

golden circle tour with kerid crater

Scientists have debated about the origin of Kerið, but it's difficult to determine due to the crater being formed around 6,500 years ago. Previously, several crater lakes Kerið was categorized by volcanologists as an "explosion crater" because they believed it was created during an explosive eruption.

Most scientists now think that Kerið was originally a cone-shaped volcano that erupted and emptied its magma chamber. This caused the foundation to collapse inward and create the shape we see today.

golden circle tour with kerid crater

It is believed that Kerið crater filled with water at some point in the centuries after its collapse. The water in the crater lake is thought to be groundwater, rather than from rainfall, as it sits at the same level as the water table, which is the underground surface where soil or rock is always saturated with water.

The depth of the lake in Kerið varies between seven and fourteen meters depending on the water table, which is influenced by seasonal changes and rainfall. Since the water doesn't drain out, the crater acts as a spectacular view into the groundwater system.

Please allow up to 30 minutes for the bus to reach your location. We are collecting people from various places across the city which can take time.

We will first make a stop at the Kerid Crater in the Golden Circle, a volcanic crater lake. It’s famous for the stark contrast in colors – maroon mineral sediment, dark lava rocks, and blueish lake water – forming a naturally eye-pleasing sight.

The origin of Kerið began almost 6500 years ago during an eruption that was said to be grand, but when the magma emptied, the chamber collapsed in on itself, leaving the crater as the shape we see today.

You can also take a walk along the crater rim or follow the paved path down to the bottom of the crater to get a better view. In winter, the lake often freezes over.

Gullfoss Waterfall, aka the Golden Falls, is a must-visit attraction of the Golden Circle tours in Iceland. It is an astonishing waterfall originating from Iceland’s second-largest glacier  Langjökull . Its roaring cascade first runs down a gradual slope for 11 meters (36.01 ft) then tumbles down deep into the canyon with a 21 meter (68.9 ft) magnificent, wide drop, creating impressive, beautiful mist to splash up in the air, reflecting a giant rainbow in the sunlight.

Well-paved pathways are available with different viewpoints to admire the Gullfoss waterfall. The first viewpoint is the upper deck next to the visitor center, from which you have a panoramic view of the waterfall in its entirety.

Following the path, you can walk down to the lower deck, to view another side of the thunderous drop that vanishes into the depth of the earth. Then you can see the first plunge of the waterfall in a closer distance on the lower deck. Please be aware that the path can be closed if it’s icy and conditions are not ideal.

golden circle tour with kerid crater

Next up, we head out to the dynamic geothermal area Geysir, which is named after the original geyser, the  Great Geysir , which is no longer active. The area is filled with steam vents, bubbling pits, and sizzling ponds, with multicolored patches dotted here and there. The main show of the site is the active  Strokkur Geyser  that gushes 20 meters up in the air every 5 to 10 minutes. The spectacular, lively sight is the highlight of the Geysir geothermal field.

Another feature of the area is the bubbling hot springs and the steamy muddy fields, creating a sulfuric smell. The geysers create a great opportunity to immerse yourself in Iceland’s wonder.

There’s a visitor center close by, selling souvenirs, and local products, and offering many lunch options.

As one of the most famous sites and must-visits in Iceland, Thingvellir National Park has great significance in both the history and geology of Iceland. In 930 AD, the world’s first parliament was established here in Thingvellir by Vikings, making it the oldest parliament. Most surprisingly the parliament is still active and fully functioning!

Thingvellir sits right on the only visible section of the  Mid-Atlantic Ridge , which is  mostly submerged in the ocean. As you walk along the pathway, you are walking in between the rift valley between two diverging tectonic plates that are home to  North America  and  Eurasia , respectively.

Thingvellir National Park is home to a diverse range of scenery which includes the  Öxaráfoss waterfall ,  Almannagjá gorge ,  Hakið panoramic viewpoint ,  Silfra Fissure  and the  Þingvallakirkja Church . The water is crystal clear at Thingvellir as the meltwater from  Langjökull glacier  seeps through the underground lava field, considered to be the best natural filter in the world.

A national treasure, Þingvellir is a great place to learn about Iceland’s history and heritage, especially if you are interested in Vikings, and how the laws of the land came about. In 2004, Þingvellir National Park was listed as one of the  UNESCO World Heritage Sites .

After Thingvellir, we drive back to Reykjavík.

Drop off will be at the same spot you were collected from earlier in the day.

Thingvellir National Park

In no time at all, we will be approaching the first stop of the tour, the stunning sight of Thingvellir National Park. This is where the enormous gap between Eurasia and America’s continental plates can clearly be seen, as they slowly part from each other along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This geological movement triggered the gigantic volcanic eruptions that gave birth to this country around 20 million years ago, and eruptions and earthquakes still continue to this day all over Iceland. But don’t worry – there hasn’t been an eruption here for two thousand years!

The beautiful lake of Thingvallavatn spreads as far as the eye can see, and here you will have the rare opportunity to stand with one foot on each continent at the same time too.

Thingvellir is a national shrine for Icelanders, as it used to be where the Althingi, the national Parliament sat from 930AD right up until the 18th century. Laws were passed here at the “Law Rock”, disputes were settled, and festivals were celebrated. Iceland declared her independence from Denmark here in 1944, and Thingvellir was made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004.

Next, we will pass through the little village of Laugarvatn, which sits next to a gorgeous lake of the same name in a geothermally active area. The locals even use the hot steam vapor for baking rye bread in the ground here!

Geologically enthralling, Thingvellir is also significant in the cultural and historical life of Iceland, as it was the site of the oldest surviving Parliament in the world, established by the Vikings in 930AD. Laws were passed, disputes were settled, festivals were held, and the Icelandic nation was ruled from here for nearly a thousand years. Iceland declared its independence from Denmark here in 1944. It is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thanks to its rich cultural history and the stunning natural environment that lies all around.

Geysir & Haukadalur Geothermal Area

We soon come to the Haukadalur Geothermal area and Geysir, the place that gives its name to spouting hot springs all over the world. Geysir and Strokkur are the biggest geysers here, with Strokkur erupting every few minutes, sometimes as high as 30 meters into the sky.

Known throughout the world for its power and beauty, Geysir has become a synonym for this fantastic show of nature. Strokkur, another hot spring, sits nearby and is very active, reliably erupting to heights of up to 30 meters every few minutes. It’s possible to get quite close to Strokkur too, but it’s wise to check the wind direction first! Streams of super-heated water trickle all around, leaving intriguing colorful residues behind. While we are in the Geysir area, you will also have time to buy lunch or some snacks or shop for souvenirs at the adjacent service station.

All around this area, you will also find many bubbling hotpots and superheated streams that leave multi-colored residues behind. This is the place you’ll have seen in the guidebooks, and this is where you’ll get some of your best photos while you’re in Iceland. Just make sure that you’re standing upwind when Strokkur explodes!

Gullfoss – The Golden Waterfall

We will then make our way to Gullfoss, which translates as the “golden waterfall” – but not before we pass through many remote upland farms where there are often more beautiful Icelandic horses than people to be seen. You might even get a chance to say hello to the horses if they are standing by the fences.

Gullfoss is one of Iceland’s most popular and cherished natural wonders. A double-drop waterfall with a cascade of more than 30 meters and generating lots of spray as millions of gallons of water crash into a narrow ravine, Gullfoss is a sensational sight at any time of the year.

On sunny days, huge rainbows cover the area, triggered by the constant spray. The waterfall is continuously fed by glacial meltwater from the Langjokull glacier, 40km deeper into the Highlands, which leads to the Hvita (White) river, with the flow doubling in the summer months. There are several viewing platforms here, with some closed in the winter months.

Kerid Volcanic Crater

There is still more to see though as we drive you back towards Reykjavik by a different route, passing by Reykholt, which is famous for her geothermally-heated greenhouses. Then we will come to our last sightseeing stop. This is a bonus for you, as the “classic” Golden Circle usually just contains the three famous stops.

We are giving you an extra treat by bringing you to Kerid, a 55m deep and 270m wide volcanic crater that is beautifully streaked with red earth and green mosses, with a turquoise-blue mineral water lake to complete a fantastic spectacle. It’s even possible to walk down a pathway to the crater’s bottom for a better look.

On our way back to Reykjavík, you will see the rolling farmlands of the South Coast and the geothermal areas surrounding the town of Hveragerdi – famous for numerous greenhouses and many horse farms.

You will also see rugged lava fields as we climb the Hellisheidi mountain pass and a geothermal power plant with superheated plumes of steam billowing into the air.

The darker the nights get, the brighter the lights can be seen. Choose one of our winter tours for an experience you’ll never forget!

Lava Caving

Iceland is a hotbed of volcanic activity formed by superheated lava and molten rock from countless eruptions over millions of years. When the lava stops flowing, the top crust cools more quickly, leaving hollow caves and tunnels behind. You can explore these incredible underground spaces when our Silver Circle tours visit The Cave at Víðgelmir in West Iceland. Enjoy a 90-minute expedition on well-lit walkways with expert guides and learn about stalagmites and stalactites in colorful caverns. Viking outlaws used these places as hideouts – now you can explore here too!

See Iceland’s most famous sights

Tour the Golden Circle to see the glittering jewels in Iceland’s crown. In one convenient day trip from the capital, you’ll see the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, the geothermal wonders of Geysir , and the spectacular rift valley at Þingvellir National Park . Take our tours of Iceland to admire its gorgeous glaciers

Close to the Arctic Circle and just 300 miles wide, Iceland is the perfect place to explore glaciers and ice caps. These frozen blue wonders can be seen easily as you explore Iceland on our Ring Road tours . That’s because outlet glaciers and glacier tongues reach down from  Sólheimajökull on the South Coast and from Vatnajökull in the East right down to the coast, making it easy to get up close to these majestic sights. Centuries of snow and ice have created these incredible glaciers, but they are retreating now due to climate change. Don’t miss your chance to see these marvels while you can!

Glacier Hike

Experience an adventure like no other on a Glacier Hike tour

Did you know that a tenth of Iceland is covered in glaciers and that 269 of them have been named? Iceland is the ideal place to come if you want to explore these natural wonders at close quarters. That’s because our South Coast tours visit Sólheimajökull in South Iceland, where you can strap on crampons and take an unforgettable stroll across this ever-changing environment. Gaze at incredible ice formations, crossing crevasses, and exploring ice caves, all in the hands of knowledgeable expert guides. Note : Our Glacier Hike tours operate between April and October.

Iceland is a country filled with incredible water features, including hot springs, waterfalls, and glacial rivers. But did you know that the word “geyser” comes from here? On our Golden Circle tours , you’ll see the “OG” of geysers everywhere at the Haukadalur Geothermal area. While Geysir has fallen silent recently, nearby Strokkur erupts in steam explosions and spray every few minutes, sending superheated water flying high into the sky. Geysir means “gush” in Icelandic, and that’s where the name comes from! If you book a package with stay in Hveragerði you can also admire smaller cousin of Strokkur that erupts every 15-20 minutes.

Geothermal Areas

Discover Iceland’s active geothermal areas on our tours

Iceland’s fiery volcanic origins mean it’s a hothouse of geothermal activity with several colorful geothermal areas you can explore on our tours. The Blue Lagoon is the most famous, close to the airport, and you can visit the Haukadalur Geothermal Area on our Golden Circle tours . On our Silver Circle tours , you can see the most powerful hot spring in Europe at Deildartunguhver . And if you choose one of our Ring Road tours , you’ll see the almost alien landscapes at Hverir , where fumaroles fizz and hot pools bubble and boil! Feel the ground tremble and smell the sulfur!

Iceland is a “country in the making” formed by volcanoes and earthquakes and sculpted by gigantic glaciers.

That offers you a variety of breathtaking and unique landscapes, such as Stuðlagil and Fjaðrárgljúfur , two of the most stunning places in Iceland! At Stuðlagil, you’ll see twisting basalt columns line a gorgeous glacial river canyon, a magnificent location that has only recently been discovered. Fjaðrárgljúfur (Feather River Canyon) is a surreal sight – a marvelous sheer-walled river canyon covered in blankets of velvet-green moss.

Our tours will take you straight to the most spectacular sights in Iceland, but there are ways of getting even closer if you want to! At the Glacier Lagoon (Jökulsárlón), you can jump into an amphibious vehicle for an unforgettable tour around the lagoon, sailing amongst the glittering giants.

Imagine the thrill of seeing these gigantic chunks of multi-coloured ice from just a few feet away! Where else will you get a chance to cruise between towering icebergs as they sway around the spectacular lagoon? Don’t miss this magical experience! Note: Boat tours are available from May to October.

Bird Watching

Everyone wants to see Iceland’s famous puffins when they visit in the summer months (late May until mid-August) . Iceland is also home to countless more species of birds, some of which stay all year round.

On our South Coast and Ring Road tours, you’ll also have a chance to see Arctic terns, kittiwakes, guillemots, and razorbills. Lake Mývatn in North Iceland attracts thousands of ducks each summer, making it a bird watcher’s paradise! Look out for the Barrow’s Goldeneye, Harlequin ducks, gyrfalcons, gannets, and ptarmigans! Our Westfjords and Snæfellsnes tours also include visits to bird-filled cliffs along the route.

Visit the “original” Geyser on our Golden Circle tours

Iceland’s fierce volcanic activity fuels gushing geysers all around the country, and the most famous hot spring is Geysir , one of the highlights of our Golden Circle tours . Geysir was the first erupting hot spring discovered by Europeans, and its name is the Icelandic word for “gush”, giving its name to all hot springs worldwide. Geysir is quiet these days, but Strokkur sends hot water and vapor high into the sky every few minutes! You won’t have to wait long to see it blow sky-high. So get your camera ready – this will be one of the best photo opportunities you’ll have in Iceland!

Gullfoss Waterfall

Discover the glorious Gullfoss on our Golden Circle tours

One of the highlights of the famous Golden Circle route , Gullfoss is a thundering two-tier waterfall fueled by Langjökull , the “Long Glacier”, which you’ll see far inland if it’s a clear day. Tumbling more than thirty meters into a dramatic rock canyon, Gullfoss is one of the most thrilling waterfalls in the country, and you can see the falls from several viewing platforms. Watch out for rainbows on sunny days, and wear waterproofs – millions of gallons of water crashing over the cascade creates lots of spray!

Traditional Architecture

See the famous turf-roofed buildings!

Traditional Icelandic architecture is characterized by its simplicity, functionality, and integration with the natural environment. During our tours you will be able to see couple of its examples.

Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the North

Akureyri is the unofficial “second city” of Iceland, located in the far north about six hours from Reykjavik, nestling at the end of the longest fjord in the country.

Sólheimajökull Glacier & Lagoon

See the slowly disappearing glacier and a glacial lake forming in front!

Sólheimajökull is a magnificent glacier located on the South Coast of Iceland. It is an outlet glacier that descends from the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. Sólheimajökull is famous for its breathtaking ice formations, including deep crevasses, ice caves, and dramatic ice ridges.

The glacial environment of Sólheimajökull provides a unique opportunity to witness the effects of climate change, as the glacier has been receding in recent years. This caused new Glacial Lagoon to appear on the map of Iceland, where huge chunks of ice slowly float on its surface.

Húsafell Canyon Baths

Bathe like Icelanders did in the old days!

This place offers a unique and natural relaxation experience, nestled within a stunning canyon surrounded by lush greenery. This is a spellbinding place that has to be seen to be believed, with three geothermally-heated pools of varying temperatures (30-41°C or 86-105°F), a cold-water pot and a cooling waterfall, all designed to blend seamlessly into the natural environment.

These are traditional and authentic Icelandic bathing pools , inspired by the age-old ways used by the locals in this area for a thousand years. Sustainably built in the traditional stone-bath style in an off-grid location, it’s a unique combination.

Rauðisandur Red Beach

Find yourself on the Westernmost Beach in Europe!

Rauðisandur is a stunning golden sandy beach located in the Westfjords region of Iceland. Its name translates to “Red Sand,” but the beach is actually a unique blend of golden, beige, and reddish hues . The vast expanse of Rauðisandur stretches for nearly 10 kilometers and is backed by stunning cliffs and mountains. The beach is known for its tranquil beauty and peaceful atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for solitude and relaxation.

Bolafjall Sky Walk

Take a walk on top of one of the most beautiful summits in Iceland!

Bolafjall is a prominent mountain located in the Westfjords region of Iceland. Rising up to an elevation of 638 meters , it offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding fjords and coastal landscape.

In the recent year, on the summit of Bolafjall impressing viewing platform with sky walk was constructed, just right next to old American radar station. It allows you to witness the beauty of the rugged terrain and the vast ocean beyond. The road leading to the top is very steep and narrow, but no worries! You will be taken there by our experienced drivers.

See the most powerful waterfall in the whole of Europe!

Dettifoss is a mighty and powerful waterfall located in Northeast Iceland. It is known for being the most powerful waterfall in Europe , with a massive volume of water cascading over its rocky edge.

The sheer force and thundering sound of Dettifoss are awe-inspiring, creating a mesmerizing spectacle for visitors. The waterfall is situated in the Vatnajökull National Park, surrounded by rugged landscapes and dramatic cliffs.

Discover the hidden gem of the South Coast with us!

Gljúfrabúi is a hidden gem located in Iceland, near the popular tourist attraction, Seljalandsfoss waterfall.

It is often referred to as the “Secret Waterfall” or “Cave Watefall” due to its concealed location and the fact, that is very often missed by many !

Diamond Beach

Take a walk among the “Diamonds”!

The beach gets its name from the sparkling icebergs that wash up on the black sand , resembling diamonds on the shore. The contrast between the glistening ice and the dark volcanic sand creates a breathtaking sight. Diamond Beach is a photographer’s paradise, offering stunning opportunities to capture the beauty of nature.

Walk on a lava arch and see many stunning sights!

Arnastapi is a small village located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. The village offers a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers. One of the main attractions in Arnarstapi is the famous Gatklettur, a natural arch rock formation that stands tall against the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. There, you can also take a walk on the Lava Bridge and pose for a unique picture.

Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the West

Borgarnes bubbles with life, packed into a picturesque promontory overlooking the broad waters of Borgarfjörður, the “City Fjord”.

Enjoy an afternoon and overnight stay in the charming, geothermal village

Hveragerði catches your attention with steam vents billowing vapor into the air everywhere you look. You’ll be amazed by the endless rows of geothermally-heated greenhouses, where bananas and other fruits are grown all year round!

Hraunfossar Lava Waterfalls

See a unique waterfall when you book a Silver Circle tour

Iceland is filled with unique sights, and one of the most mesmerizing is the “Lava Waterfalls” at Hraunfossar . Part of the Silver Circle tour route, glacial meltwater gently cascades down a series of steps from the middle of moss-covered lava cliffs, with the falls stretching for hundreds of meters. The waters seep through the Hallmundarhraun lava field until reaching the White River before tumbling gracefully below. You can enjoy the Lava Waterfall from different perspectives at several viewing platforms. It’s an extraordinary sight!

Explore Iceland’s wildest region

If you want to see Iceland at its wildest, the Westfjords await you! Lonely Planet picked the Westfjords as its No.1 place to go – here’s your chance to see it!

Vik í Myrdal

Charming, southernmost village in Iceland

The picturesque village of Vik í Myrdal is perfect for a photo stop on our South Coast and Ring Road tours. Atlantic waves roll in with full force at the most southerly point on Iceland’s mainland, pounding the black sand beaches. Vík is the warmest coastal town in the country, and the summer air is filled with migrating birds. Walk its pretty streets and admire the gorgeous hilltop church atop the town’s highest point! Enjoy another view of the Reynisdrangar from there!

Where two continents split apart

A place of outstanding natural beauty, Þingvellir National Park offers you a unique opportunity to walk in Viking footsteps between two continents. The tectonic plates of North America and Europe are pulling apart along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge here, increasing Iceland’s size every day! The early Viking settlers held their parliaments (the Alþingi) here for a thousand years, and Iceland declared its independence from this stunning location in 1944, so this is a sacred place for all Icelanders! It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site , making it a must-see stop on our Golden Circle tours .

These are just some of the magical experiences you can enjoy on a tour of the sensational South Coast!

Snæfellsnes

See the “Iceland in Miniature”

Close to the capital and easily reached, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is an ideal tour to discover all of Iceland’s best features in just one day! The “Snow Mountain Peninsula” is often called “ Iceland in Miniature ” because you can find photogenic mountains (including Kirkjufell ), beautiful beaches, plunging waterfalls, seal colonies, ancient lava fields, and a towering stratovolcano in one place! Some say the peninsula has mystical qualities as one of the planet’s many “chakra” centers. It also inspired Jules Verne when he wrote “ Journey to the Center of the Earth ”!

Soothe yourself after a day on tour with a dip at Sky Lagoon

One of Iceland’s newest and most impressive geothermal spa experiences, Sky Lagoon offers you a memorable experience with astonishing views of the Atlantic. Relax in the perfectly regulated waters surrounded by volcanic rocks and a turf-roofed visitor center. Enjoy the 75-meter infinity pool, and order a drink at the swim-up bar! You can opt for an authentic Icelandic bathing experience with the Seven-Step Ritual , including saunas, cold mist showers, and exfoliating scrubs. It’s one of the most spectacular geothermal spa experiences in the world!

Seljalandsfoss

Take a walk behind a waterfall on our South Coast tours

Seljalandsfoss is a graceful waterfall that tumbles over 60 meters from Eyjafjallajökull , a volcano on Iceland’s stunning South Coast . It has a special feature that makes it even more exciting – there’s a path you can take all the way around the cascade! It can be slippery, but the views are unforgettable if you don’t mind getting wet! The chute is fueled by glacial meltwater from the volcano that stopped air traffic in 2010, putting Iceland on the map! A “secret” waterfall called Gljúfrabúi is nearby, hidden in a little green rock canyon – we’ll show you where to find it!

Reynisfjara Black Beach

See one of the most famous beaches in the world

If National Geographic and TripAdvisor both say Reynisfjara is one of the best beaches in the world, then you have to add it to your list of “must-see” places to visit when you’re in Iceland. With miles of jet-black volcanic sands stretching into the distance and fierce Atlantic waves pounding the shoreline, it’s one of the most dramatic coastlines you’ll ever see! Lined with beautiful basalt columns, the Reynisdrangar completes the cinematic scene, towering sea stacks looming offshore! Some say these were trolls trying to catch a ship, frozen in time when the sun rose!

Jökulsárlon Glacier Lagoon

Explore Iceland’s spectacular Glacier Lagoon on our tours

Where else can you get up close to immense icebergs in a glacial meltwater lagoon? On our South Coast Multi-Day and Ring Road tours , you can visit the astonishing Glacier Lagoon at Jökulsárlón , where you’ll see gigantic icebergs floating serenely around a spectacular lake, which only formed about 80 years ago. As the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier retreats, giant pieces break off the edge and sail out to sea. The Glacier Lagoon is the “waiting room” on the journey! Come and see these multicolored icy marvels for yourself at this bucket-list location, and look out for seals basking on the bergs too!

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Walk into the cave hidden behind the falls!

Seljalandsfoss behind

Hveragerði has several fine restaurants and cafés, and some offer unique dishes that use the underground heat! For example, Ölverk Pizza & Brewery specialize in wood-fired pizzas while using geothermal heat to brew their high-quality craft ales. You can also have a snack inside the greenhouse at Rósa Kaffi . Nearby, The Greenhouse Hotel is also home to a food hall with several options, including tacos, burgers, fried chicken and Asian cuisine. More options are available here, so you’re guaranteed a great meal, whatever you’re in the mood for.

What to expect

Let us take you on a thrilling tour of the grand Golden Circle and the spectacular Kerid crater in South Iceland. Then you’ll enjoy an unforgettable dip at the sensational Sky Lagoon, Iceland’s newest spa experience!

The Golden Circle gives you the chance to see the very best features of Iceland’s remarkable landscapes in one easy day trip.

You’ll get up close to geysers and waterfalls, walk between continents and around a colorful crater, and soothe yourself in the superb Sky Lagoon.

Thingvellir National Park

Your  Golden Circle tour  will start with a short drive from the city to Thingvellir National Park.

In this dramatic rift valley, the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart from each other along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge so that you can stand on two continents simultaneously!

Thingvellir was also Iceland’s first parliament. For hundreds of years, the Vikings of Iceland came here each summer for festivals and settled their disputes. The “Law Rock” and the “drowning pool” saw rough justice delivered for thieves and murderers!

Geysir & Haukadalur Geothermal Area

As we head deeper into Iceland, the next stop is Geysir, the most impressive sight in the Haukadalur “hot spring” area. Geysir is the Icelandic for “gush” and gave its name to all spouting hot springs.

Geysir doesn’t erupt very much now. But there is another gusher called Strokkur just a few meters away, which sends boiling fountains of water high into the sky every few minutes. Watch where you stand while you wait, or you might get a soaking!

You’ll feel the power of Earth’s burning core and smell it in your nostrils too!

Gullfoss – The Golden Waterfall

Just a short distance further inland lies your next extraordinary encounter with Iceland’s natural marvels – the glorious waterfall we call Gullfoss.

The “Gold Falls” are a two-tier waterfall fueled by Langjokull, the second-largest glacier in Iceland. Millions of gallons of glacial meltwater crash down over 30 meters here into a steep-sided canyon.

On sunny days, the sheets of spray generate gigantic rainbows that wrap around the waterfall.

Kerid Volcanic Crater

After Gullfoss, your next stop will be the incredible multi-colored crater at Kerid. Only a few thousand years old, the volcanic rocks are still rich in iron deposits, turning the caldera a vivid crimson color.

There’s also an azure lake and blankets of soft green mosses too. That makes Kerid one of the brightest spots you’ll see anywhere in the country!

Sky Lagoon (admission included)

As we return to the city, there is one more extraordinary experience to come!

Icelanders love to bathe in geothermal hotpots, and now you can do the same at the Sky Lagoon!

This brand-new spa experience, located just outside Reykjavik, features an immense 250-foot-long heated infinity pool, a swim-up bar and oceanfront views.

You’ll enjoy two heavenly hours lapping up the luxury here at Sky Lagoon – the perfect way to end your Golden Circle experience!

Nowhere else can you see so many natural marvels in one day. Rich in fascinating history and magnificent sights, this tour is your chance to experience Iceland at its best.
