It’s official: Internet booking sites are the worst. Which means travel agents are back in a big way, to such a degree that the crème de la crème among them are so selective that they’ll work with only a small group of card-carrying members.

We talked to the top dogs at four very different membership travel companies to find out what kind of VIP hook ups they’ll get you—and how much hand-holding you can expect along the way.

Fischer Travel

The Gist: Founded almost 54 years ago by her father, Bill Fischer—who got his clients into sold-out spots like the Hotel du Cap in Antibes in the ’80s—this family-run business is as exclusive as a club gets. “We have a very serious vetting process,” says Fischer Rosenthal.

The Membership: You might want to sit down for this: a $100,000 initiation fee, plus an annual $25,000 renewal fee, plus service fees for all trip planning. And that’s only if you’re accepted. Right now, Fischer has just 175 members.

The Claim to Fame: One-on-one tennis lessons with John McEnroe, a private tour of the Egyptian pyramids, Christmas dinner cooked by a Michelin-starred chef—you name it, Fischer Rosenthal can do it. If she told us her team could move mountains, we’d almost believe her.

Hand-Holding Quotient: Next-level. “My clients will never check in at a front desk, they will never fill out any forms, they will never have a moment when their trip isn’t absolutely seamless.”

Essentialist

The Gist: Former Travelocity exec Roca ditched digital and went private bespoke in 2017 after realizing travelers didn’t need more choice—they needed more curation. His cabal of experts includes more than 75 journalists and editors specializing in various destinations around the world.

The Membership: A flat fee of $1,400 per household per year includes unlimited travel-planning services by a designated “travel designer” who knows everything about you, from what you like to eat to what you like to drive.

The Claim to Fame: Ultra-insider experiences are the name of Roca’s game, whether it’s the best paella in Majorca at a secret restaurant few locals know or a private dinner in a Venetian palazzo. “It’s not about the price tag,” he says. “It’s about discovering things that are under the radar and unique.”

Hand-Holding Quotient: Minimal. “Our client doesn’t require a lot of hand-holding,” Roca says. “They don’t want people standing at the door of their hotel room every morning. They just want to go.”

The Gist: With partner Jon Ein of private equity firm Foundry Capital, Backlund devised not an agency but a “travel community of like-minded individuals,” in which pay-for-play travel agents wouldn’t be welcome.

The Membership: $4,500 for a full annual membership with unlimited bespoke trip planning , or $1,750 for a one-trip planning fee. “We admit limited members to make sure the service standards are maintained,” Backlund says.

The Claim to Fame: Seamless execution of even the most complicated itineraries, whether it’s an island-hopping extravaganza in the Caribbean via private jet and yacht or a Scottish golf spree with 11 tee times in 11 days.

Hand-Holding Quotient: That’s up to you. “Our clients appreciate a significant portion of discovery—the thirst for exploration is definitely there,” Backlund says. But he’ll still hold your hand if you ask.

Inspirato Pass

The Gist: Handler is like the Thomas Edison of travel clubs . He invented the destination club with Exclusive Resorts in 2002, then went on to create Inspirato , a similar but more affordable club in 2011. The Inspirato Pass , his latest brainchild, is a subscription app.

The Membership: $2,500 per month gets you household booking rights to exclusive trips, events and accommodations—all at no added cost. The catch? After booking a trip, you have to take it before you can reserve another.

The Claim to Fame: There’s the usual hotel suites and over-the-top villas, but what gets really interesting is Inspirato Pass ’s access to marquee events and experiences, from US Open seats to a European river cruise.

Hand-Holding Quotient: Surprisingly high, for an app. “All Inspirato Pass trips include pre-trip planning by our expert travel designers, including custom itineraries,” says Handler. Impressive.

“Well that was extraordinary”

“Well, that was extraordinary. About a year ago our brother-in-law casually invited us to tag along on a family trip in Africa. Our kick-ass nephew Dawit was adopted from Ethiopia five years ago and the whole pack of nephews (four in all: Jack — 19, Luke — 17, Dawit — 15 and Josh — 14) and Steve’s sister Chris and brother-in-law John were all going to Ethiopia to visit with Dawit’s birth family, and were then headed to Botswana to go on a safari. Did we want to go? Steve was unflinchingly a yes vote, and I hedged for 5 minutes and then realized it was a once-in-a-lifetime offer. This is likely the last gasp with the pack of nephews in one place before they scatter to adulthood, and the chance to go to Africa with them on the heels of a visit to Dawit’s motherland? A true wouldn’t-miss-it opportunity. So, Africa we booked! We hadn’t ever planned on going to Africa, and certainly not for a safari (Expensive! Far! How much more impressive could animals be?) but we paid our deposit and figured the year-from-now day would come.”

What is the most effective way to sell someone a product or service? As anyone who remembers the “pen scene” from The Wolf of Wall Street knows: to fill a need. Some needs are easier to understand than others; people need food, they need housing, and these things enjoy a simpler relationship between producers and consumers. Travel is different – because in a strict sense, no one needs travel. And yet, travel & tourism is one of (if not the ) largest non-need industries in the world.

Before you can identify the right clients, you have to identify your niche as a Travel Advisor. In this era of specialization, it’s better to become an expert in one thing than to know just a little about all of them.

Combine your pre-existing knowledge with your passions, and see where that leads. Are you a hopeless romantic? Honeymoons are a fantastic niche to thrive in. If you’ve enjoyed traveling with your own family through the years, perhaps multi-generational travel is for you. You can be destination-specific – Italy, Japan, New Zealand – anywhere that enjoys a strong tourism component is a great place to start.

Finding your niche will allow you to position yourself in a way that will both attract and (more importantly) keep the right kind of clients. The more you learn about the workings of your niche, the better you’ll be able to understand what the consumers who are interested in that niche want – and how to give it to them.

At The Luxury Travel Agency, we often find that the best Travel Advisors are those who can tell a story, or paint a picture – metaphorically speaking. Since travel is a non-need industry, you cannot just wait for the consumer to come to you and lay out exactly what they require; those kinds of clients are most likely planning their own trips! It is often said that decisions may be based on “hard data” such as knowledge and facts – but feelings are what trigger decisions. St. Petersburg – founded by Peter the Great and commemorated by countless artists and writers – is a seaside paradise. It was only founded in the early 1700s – fairly young compared to some of Eurasia’s other significant cities. Thrillingly, it is Russia’s cultural heart, filled with art museums, opera houses and ballet stages. The State Hermitage Museum is the largest in the world at more than 700,000 square feet, its 120 rooms visited by one million people every year. A visit to Russia isn’t complete without a taste of the fresh air. The Russian countryside is primarily made up of rolling, treeless plains called Steppes. Four climates zones make for an interesting melange of plant and animal species, not to mention the various sporting activities: skiing in Rosa Khutor, mountain climbing in Caucasus, white-water rafting Altai Republic and hiking around Lake Baikal.

GOBankingRates spoke with Rob Burley, a travel tour operator with a niche specialty that makes him an expert in sniffing out low-cost, high-class destinations wherever they might be hiding. His tour company, GP Travel , focuses on the global Formula One (F1) circuit. His customers want to spend every possible dollar on their passion for the world’s highest level of open-wheel, single-seat racing, so it’s Burley’s job to find them cheap accommodations that feel expensive, from Abu Dhabi to Austin, Texas.

He outlined four vacations that are within reach of the typical middle-class family but will make you come home feeling like you just returned from a getaway worthy of an Instagram influencer.

Out West: Yosemite National Park

The National Park system safeguards the most majestic and ecologically significant natural landscapes in the country. They exist in every corner of America, and, when done right, all of them can provide a luxury experience on a budget — but one in California stands out above all the rest.

“Yosemite National Park is breathtakingly beautiful,” said Burley. “While not inexpensive, camping or rustic cabins keep costs down, so you can fully appreciate the natural beauty.”

Budget Your Trip says the park’s 1,200 square miles of waterfalls, glaciers, forests, unique geological features and High Sierra landscape usually cost about $900 per person for a whole week. For shorter trips, Yosemite.com offers three-day packages for $300 to $400.

“Staying just one night at The Majestic lets you soak in the luxury and history of the location,” Burley said of the famous four-star Ahwahnee hotel. “I also recommend private tours for a more intimate exploration of the stunning landscapes compared to large groups.”

The Southeast: St. Petersburg, Florida

Florida is America’s premier vacation destination, and when you think of soaking in the sun and taking in the sights there, cities like Boca Raton, Palm Beach and, of course, Miami, probably come to mind — but who can afford to bring their family to those expensive cities?

The better question is: When you have all the same amenities on the inexpensive central Gulf Coast, who needs to?

“St. Petersburg, Florida offers lovely beaches and arts alongside less busy areas of the state,” said Burley. “Renting places near the beach provides nice amenities for less than hotels.”

Expedia lists St. Pete vacation packages starting at $356, which leaves a little left over to enjoy the city’s finer things.

“Treat yourself one night to the rooftop views and atmosphere at The Birchwood,” said Burley. “The Dalí Museum is a unique cultural outing in a gorgeous building.”

The Southwest: San Antonio

If you’re more into rich cultural and historical heritage than surf, sun and sand, consider a vacation just south of the expensive destination city of Austin.

“San Antonio captivates with its history and charm,” said Burley. “Hotels on the Riverwalk have reasonable rates where you can feel pampered.”

A Florida tourism agency recently named San Antonio as one of the seven least expensive vacation destinations in America. The average price of a seven-day vacation for a family of four is $3,594 — flights included.

“Budget allowing, a spa day at Mokara relaxes without high the prices found elsewhere,” said Burley. “Biga on the Banks also provides an elegant dining ambiance for reasonable costs.”

Up North: Visit Europe Just Across the New York Border

A trip to Europe will not be in the cards for many middle-class families in 2024, but a little slice of Old World history and mystique is within driving distance of much of the Northeast, New England and the Upper Midwest.

“Montreal’s Old City captures you with architectural beauty,” said Burley.

The city was founded in the mid-1600s, and many of its oldest buildings and features remain. That, along with Montreal’s French colonial history, gives the largest city in Quebec an Old Europe feel that’s virtually unrivaled in North America — outside of maybe the 1500s-era Spanish fort city of St. Augustine, Florida — and none of it has to break your budget.

“Boutique hotels there seduce you with character and charm for sensible prices, while lunch specials allow indulging [in] the gourmet scene without going over budget,” said Burley.

If it’s too far to drive, Kayak offers four-day, three-night packages for less than $400, including flights.

These millionaires are spending money and making memories.

Travel agents for the rich and famous have revealed the exorbitant sums their clients are willing to spend to enjoy their dream vacations.

A majority (90%) of Americans have a domestic trip on the calendar, expecting to spend an average of $1,163 per trip, according to Empower research .

But spending just over a grand on travel is nothing to money-flushed millionaires, including the 350,000 who live in New York City .

Experts who work in the luxury travel industry shared that their clients are willing to shell out hundreds of thousands per trip — but it’s not just about relaxing or getting the perfect Instagram shot.

“Millionaires view traveling as more than just a way to unwind — they also see it as an opportunity to create lasting memories and embrace a lavish lifestyle,” Giacomo Piva, a travel industry analyst and co-founder of  Radical Storage , told Yahoo!

“They are pursuing distinct experiences, like leasing private jets and islands, and are willing to invest substantial sums, from $50,000 to $100,000 annually, to fulfill their passion for traveling. A few of them might frequently invest over $200,000 in one journey, guaranteeing that every aspect is carefully tailored to their likes.”

The majority of travelers (57%) are most willing to splurge on dining and restaurants while on a vacation, while 47% would splurge on experiences and 41% would spend more on lodging. 

Luxury travel agents said that many of their clients are splurging to ensure they’re getting exclusivity, privacy and personalization on all their trips — usually more than one a year — jet-setting in private aircrafts, sailing on yachts and leasing private islands.

“The opulence of our itineraries reflects not just in the sum spent — typically between $500,000 to over $1 million annually — but in the meticulous attention to detail and the exclusive access to the world’s most coveted experiences,” LaDell Carter, founder and lead travel designer at  Royal Expression Travels , told Yahoo!

“Each journey is more than a trip; it is a testament to the power of luxury to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.”
