What Are All The Professional Golf Tours Around The World?

Have you ever stopped to consider just how many professional golf tours there are around the world? There’s actually a lot more than you might think, and while we’re not going to cover all of them, we thought we’d at least cover some of the biggest pro golf tours worldwide right here! Let’s get started.

If we’re going by name recognition alone, the PGA Tour wins hands down. This tournament is one of the most well-known events in the entire sport. The PGA runs all pro golf tournaments throughout the US and North America.

The organization is membership-based, and its members are some of the best golfers in the game. The aim is to expand golf to grow opportunities for domestic and international players.

The LPGA is similar to the PGA, except that it’s for women. The Ladies Professional Golf Association is one of the leading pro golf organizations in the world for women. The events created, hosted, and operated by the LPGA primarily take place within the United States of America. There are 5 annual major championships, and it too is a membership-based organization.

Think of the Korn Ferry tour as a pre-PGA tour. Officially it’s known as a developmental tour for pro golfers who’ve yet to be welcomed into the fold that is the exclusive PGA Tour. It’s an organization for those who've not yet qualified or have qualified but have been unsuccessful at earning enough money to stay at the required levels. Whoever lands in the top 25 spots is granted entry into the PGA membership program for the following season.

Similar to how the Korn Ferry is a pre-curser to the PGA, Symetra is the pre-curser to the LPGA. It’s also known as the ‘Road to the LPGA’ and is open to both amateur and professional female golfers. While Korn Ferry allows the top 25 players entry, Symetra only allows the top 10 players on the money list to join the LPGA with full membership come the following season.

How Many Professional Golf Tours Are There?

How Many Professional Golf Tours Are There?

Jon Rahm Secures Genesis Invitational Win to Move to World No. 1

Most golf fans have yet to comprehend how professional golf tours work and how many there are worldwide. Naturally, news outlets tend to cover the most famous and lucrative tours, such as the PGA Tour and LIV Golf Series, but in essence, there are a large number of golf tours across different geographical regions of the world. A governing body known as the International Federation of PGA Tours deliberates common global issues in professional golf and ensures that individual tours run smoothly.

Every region has a much-coveted top-tier professional golf tour that golfers aspire to qualify for, but due to the stiff competition, not every golfer can participate. Thus, other second-tier tours, known as developmental tours, act as feeders to the main ones, giving upcoming golfers a platform to qualify for the lucrative top-tier tours. As golfers win trophies and rise to the limelight, they can shift all their attention to competing in the main tours where the prize money is heaviest.

Top Professional Golf Tours in the World:

The  PGA TOUR is undoubtedly the most popular professional tour  among pro male golfers. Though based in the United States, the PGA TOUR is also open to international golfers that qualify. It features a series of highly lucrative events with a purse average of $8.5 million and a first-place finish garnering a minimum of 24 OWGR points. It’s safe to say that once a golfer lifts a PGA TOUR trophy, their career fortunes change for life. The equally famous Korn Ferry Tour acts as the second-tier feeder tour for the PGA Tour.

LIV Golf is the latest entrant in the list of professional golf tours, but it also happens to be the richest. The trending series receives funding from the heavily monied Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia. Although it premiered in 2022, they have already splashed billions to poach the big names in the PGA and DP World Tours, such as Phil Mickelson and Greg Norman. With a total purse of $25 million per event, all eyes wait to see how LIV tournaments will be.

For more information: www.livgolf.com

The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour is the most lucrative and famous professional tour for women golfers. Based in the USA, the event attracts international golfers and comprises of five annual major championships. Golfers participating in other female tours eye a spot on the LPGA Tour and jump on the first opportunity to join it due to the fame and fortune that comes with it.

PGA TOUR Champions

The best thing about golf is that there’s no set retirement age. The  US-based PGA TOUR Champions  is for male golfers aged 50 and above, which offers a perfect nest for pro golfers to enjoy their golden years and add a couple more million to their net worth in the process.

European Tour

The European Tour is another highly-coveted professional golf tour, now called the DP World Tour. Pro golfers eye the $2.5 million purse average on DP World Tour events, and the minimum of 24 OWGR points players gain from a first-place finish. The Challenge Tour acts as the second-tier feeder tour to the DP World Tour.

Our new ranking of every PGA Tour course—from best to worst

There are plenty of reasons why a course is selected to host a PGA Tour event beyond its architectural merits. Of course, the layout must sufficiently test the best players in the world, but the regional market, logistics and history all play important roles in landing a tour event as well.

That said, it’s no secret the tour travels to many of our country’s finest courses. Of the 32 events played in the United States during the 2024 PGA Tour season, 16 are currently ranked on at least one of Golf Digest's national rankings— America's 100 Greatest , Second 100 Greatest and 100 Greatest Public .

In this guide, we rank the 32 U.S. courses that will host a PGA Tour event or major championship this season, based on the scores from our 1,800 course-ranking panelists. (This list only includes events played in the U.S.—there are five international events scheduled this season. Also note that we only rank the primary course at multi-course events such as Torrey Pines and Pebble Beach.)

You might be surprised how the architectural merits of a layout don’t always align with the prestige of the tour event played there. Our panelists evaluate courses on seven scoring criteria, ranging from Shot Options and Layout Variety to Conditioning and Aesthetics .

Scroll on for the complete ranking, and be sure to click through to each individual course page for bonus photography and reviews from our course panelists. We also encourage you to leave your own ratings on the courses you’ve played … so you can make your case for why a course should be higher or lower on our rankings.

There will be no surprise with the No. 1 course on this list. Augusta National has been ranked first, second or third on our biennial America's 100 Greatest Courses ranking in each edition. The club made a significant change in the fall of 2022, lengthening the par-5 13th hole by about 30 yards . No club has tinkered with its golf course as often or as effectively over the decades as has Augusta National Golf Club, mainly to keep it competitive for the annual Masters Tournament, an event it has conducted since 1934, with time off during WWII. All that tinkering has resulted in an amalgamation of design ideas, with a routing by Alister Mackenzie and Bobby Jones, some Perry Maxwell greens, some Trent Jones water hazards, some Jack Nicklaus mounds and swales and, most recently, extensive rebunkering and tree planting by Tom Fazio. The tinkering continued in the summer of 2018 as the club lengthened the par-4 fifth by extending its back tee on newly acquired land. Soon to come, the lengthening of the famed par-5 13th.

Kapalua: Plantation

Kapalua: Plantation

Lahaina, hi.

From Golf Digest Architecture Editor emeritus Ron Whitten:  Most golf fans are familiar with Kapalua Golf Club’s Plantation Course, home of the PGA Tour's opening event each year. Located on the north shore of the Hawaiian island of Maui, the Plantation was built from open, windswept pineapple fields on the pronounced slope of a volcano and is irrigated by sprinklers pressured solely by gravity. As the first design collaboration by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, it unveiled their joint admiration for old-style courses. The blind drive on the fourth, the cut-the-corner drives on the fifth and sixth are all based on tee shots found at National Golf Links. So, too, are its punchbowl green and strings of diagonal bunkers. It's also a massive course, built on a huge scale, Coore says, to accommodate the wind and the slope and the fact that it gets mostly resort play.

Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge: Challenger/Champion

Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Club & Lodge: Challenger/Champion

Orlando, fl.

From Golf Digest Architecture Editor emeritus Ron Whitten:  I've always been fascinated by the design of Bay Hill, Arnold Palmer's home course for over 45 years (although Tiger Woods owns it, competitively-speaking, as he's won there eight times.) For one thing, it's rather hilly, a rarity in Florida (although not in the Orlando market) and dotted with sinkhole ponds incorporated in the design in dramatic ways.

I always thought the wrap-around-a-lake par-5 sixth was Dick Wilson's version of Robert Trent Jones's decade-older 13th at The Dunes Club at Myrtle Beach. Each of the two rivals had claimed the other was always stealing his ideas. But the hole I like best at Bay Hill is the par-4 eighth, a lovely dogleg-right with a diagonal green perched above a small circular pond. OK, I admit that it reminds me of the sixth at Hazeltine National, another Trent Jones product, but I don't think Wilson picked Trent's pocket on this one, as both courses were built about the same time, in the early 1960s.

One of five courses at PGA National, the Champion Course has hosted the Honda Classic since 2007. (The event dates back to 1972, though with Honda pulling out as a tournament sponsor, the event is in question going forward.) Originally designed by Tom and George Fazio for tournament play, Jack Nicklaus redesigned the course in 2014, creating the infamous three-hole stretch aptly named "The Bear Trap." Routinely one of the toughest courses on tour, The Champion is a true ball-striking test that plays a lot differently than most courses, where winning scores push over 20 under par.

Overview of the PGA Tour

History and background.

The PGA Tour is widely regarded as the premier professional golf tour in the world. It has a rich history that dates back to its establishment in 1929. Originally known as the Tournament Players Division, it was created by a group of professional golfers who sought to organize and regulate tournament play. Over the years, the tour has evolved and grown, with a focus on providing a platform for the best golfers to showcase their skills and compete at the highest level.

Structure and Format

The PGA Tour operates on a season-based structure, with the calendar running from October to September the following year. During this time, players compete in a series of tournaments held across the United States and occasionally overseas. These tournaments are organized into different categories, with each category offering a different level of prestige and prize money.

The most prestigious events on the PGA Tour are the Major Championships, which include the Masters Tournament, the U.S. Open, The Open Championship, and the PGA Championship. These tournaments are considered the pinnacle of professional golf and attract the best players from around the world.

In addition to the Major Championships, the PGA Tour also hosts regular tour events, known as the FedExCup tournaments. The PGA Tour also offers a developmental tour called the Korn Ferry Tour. This tour serves as a pathway for up-and-coming golfers to earn their way onto the PGA Tour. Players who perform well on the Korn Ferry Tour have the opportunity to earn PGA Tour membership for the following season.

The structure and format of the PGA Tour provide a platform for players to showcase their skills, compete against the best in the world, and earn a living through professional golf. It is a highly competitive environment that requires a combination of talent, dedication, and hard work to succeed.

Overall, the PGA Tour has a rich history and a well-structured format that has helped it become the premier professional golf tour in the world. It provides a platform for players to compete at the highest level and has produced some of the greatest golfers of all time. Whether you’re a casual fan or a die-hard golf enthusiast, the PGA Tour offers a thrilling and exciting experience for all.

Qualification Process

Eligibility criteria.

To become a member of the PGA Tour, golfers must meet certain eligibility criteria . These criteria ensure that only the most skilled and competitive players are able to participate in the tour. One of the main requirements is that a golfer must be a professional, meaning they earn the majority of their income from playing golf. This ensures that the tour is comprised of individuals who have dedicated their lives to the sport and have the necessary skills to compete at the highest level.

In addition to being a professional golfer, players must also meet the PGA Tour’s age requirements. Generally, players must be at least 18 years old to compete on the tour. This age restriction ensures that players have had enough time to develop their skills and gain experience before entering the professional arena.

Q-School and Web.com Tour

One of the pathways for golfers to earn their PGA Tour membership is through the Qualifying School, commonly known as Q-School. Q-School is a series of tournaments where aspiring professionals compete for a chance to earn their tour card. The top finishers in Q-School receive status on the Web.com Tour, which is the developmental tour for the PGA Tour. By performing well on the Web.com Tour, players can earn their way onto the PGA Tour.

The Web.com Tour serves as a stepping stone for aspiring professionals. It provides them with an opportunity to compete against other talented golfers and gain experience in a competitive environment. The top performers on the Web.com Tour are awarded PGA Tour cards, allowing them to compete in PGA Tour events.

Sponsor Exemptions

Sponsor exemptions are another means for golfers to gain entry into PGA Tour events. Sponsors of tournaments have the ability to invite players who may not meet the standard eligibility criteria. These exemptions are often given to up-and-coming golfers or popular players who may bring additional attention and excitement to the tournament.

Sponsor exemptions can be a valuable opportunity for players to showcase their skills on the big stage. It allows them to compete against some of the best golfers in the world and potentially earn their way onto the tour permanently. However, sponsor exemptions are limited in number and are typically reserved for special cases.

Player Rankings and Categories

The world of professional golf is filled with talented players who compete at the highest level. To determine the standing of these players, various ranking systems and categories are in place. In this section, we will explore two key aspects of player evaluation: the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) and the FedExCup Points System.

product image

Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR)

The Official World Golf Ranking, commonly known as the OWGR, is a system that ranks professional golfers based on their performance in tournaments worldwide. It provides a comprehensive and objective measure of a player’s standing in the global golfing community.

The OWGR takes into account the results of players in selected events over a rolling two-year period. The ranking points awarded to each player are based on the strength of the field, the player’s finishing position, and the level of competition. The system rewards consistent performance, placing greater emphasis on recent results.

This ranking system is used to determine eligibility and seeding for prestigious tournaments, such as major championships and international team events like the Ryder Cup. It also serves as a benchmark for players aspiring to earn their place among the world’s best.

The OWGR is updated weekly, reflecting the ever-evolving landscape of professional golf. It offers fans and players alike a snapshot of the current hierarchy, allowing for exciting debates and discussions. Furthermore, it provides a sense of direction for players aiming to climb the ranks and make their mark on the sport.

FedExCup Points System

In addition to the OWGR, the PGA Tour employs the FedExCup Points System to determine player rankings and qualifications for the season-ending FedExCup Playoffs. This system introduces a unique element of competition and adds an extra layer of excitement to the tour.

product image

Throughout the PGA Tour season, players earn FedExCup points based on their performance in each tournament. The amount of points awarded depends on a variety of factors, including the strength of the field and the player’s finishing position. The higher a player finishes in a tournament, the more points they earn.

The accumulation of FedExCup points throughout the season determines a player’s position in the standings. The top 125 players at the end of the regular season qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs, a series of tournaments that culminate in the crowning of the FedExCup champion.

The FedExCup Points System adds a level of volatility and unpredictability to the PGA Tour. It rewards players who consistently perform well throughout the season while allowing for dramatic shifts in the standings as each tournament unfolds. This format ensures that every shot counts and keeps fans engaged from start to finish.

In summary, the Official World Golf Ranking and the FedExCup Points System are integral components of the professional golfing landscape. They provide a framework for evaluating player performance, determining eligibility for prestigious events, and adding excitement to the tour. Whether it’s the global perspective offered by the OWGR or the season-long battle for FedExCup points, these systems contribute to the captivating nature of the sport.

Player Turnover and Membership

The PGA Tour is constantly evolving, with players joining and leaving the tour each year. This section will explore the process of new players joining the tour, players retiring or leaving, and the different membership categories and status within the PGA Tour.

New Players Joining the Tour

Every year, a new batch of talented golfers aspires to make their mark on the PGA Tour. The process of joining the tour is not an easy one, as it requires players to meet certain criteria and go through a rigorous qualification process.

To be eligible to join the PGA Tour, players must meet the tour’s eligibility criteria. These criteria include age requirements, amateur status, and golf skill level. Players must also have a certain level of playing experience and a proven track record of success in professional or amateur golf tournaments.

One pathway for new players to join the PGA Tour is through the Qualifying School (Q-School) and the Web.com Tour. Q-School is a series of tournaments where players compete for a limited number of spots on the Web.com Tour, which serves as a stepping stone to the PGA Tour. Players who perform well on the Web.com Tour have the opportunity to earn their PGA Tour card and become full members of the tour.

Another way for new players to gain entry to the PGA Tour is through sponsor exemptions. Sponsors have the ability to invite players to compete in certain tournaments, regardless of their official ranking or tour status. Sponsor exemptions are often given to up-and-coming players or those who have shown potential but may not have met all the eligibility criteria.

Players Leaving or Retiring

Just as new players join the PGA Tour, there are also players who decide to retire or leave the tour for various reasons. Retirement from professional golf can be a personal decision made by players who feel they have achieved their goals or want to pursue other interests outside of the sport.

In some cases, players may leave the tour due to injury or loss of form. Golf is a demanding sport that requires physical fitness and consistent performance. If a player is unable to maintain a certain level of play or is hindered by injuries, they may choose to step away from the tour.

Membership Categories and Status

The PGA Tour has different membership categories and statuses that determine a player’s standing within the tour. These categories and statuses are based on a player’s performance and accomplishments on the tour.

The highest membership status on the PGA Tour is full membership, which is granted to players who have earned their PGA Tour card through the qualification process. Full members have the ability to compete in all PGA Tour events and have the opportunity to earn Official World Golf Ranking points and FedExCup points.

There are also different categories of membership within the PGA Tour. These categories include past champions, major champions, and players who have secured their tour card through the Web.com Tour or other qualifying events. Each category comes with its own privileges and opportunities to compete in specific tournaments.

In addition to full membership and different categories, the PGA Tour also has conditional status. Players with conditional status have limited playing opportunities and must rely on sponsor exemptions or their performance in limited events to secure more playing opportunities.

Overall, the PGA Tour experiences a constant turnover of players, with new talent joining the tour each year and established players deciding to retire or leave. The process of new players joining the tour involves meeting eligibility criteria, going through the Qualifying School or earning sponsor exemptions. Membership categories and status determine a player’s standing within the tour and the opportunities they have to compete in various tournaments.

Impact of COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the PGA Tour, causing disruptions to the schedule and leading to changes in player participation. Let’s take a closer look at the schedule changes and cancellations, as well as the effects on player participation.

Schedule Changes and Cancellations

The COVID-19 pandemic brought about unprecedented challenges to the PGA Tour, resulting in numerous schedule changes and cancellations. In an effort to prioritize the health and safety of players, officials, and spectators, the PGA Tour made the difficult decision to suspend tournaments temporarily.

Initially, the tour announced a suspension of events for several weeks, hoping to resume play as soon as it was safe to do so. However, as the severity of the pandemic became increasingly apparent, the suspension was extended, and several tournaments were subsequently canceled.

The Masters, one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments, was postponed from its usual April date and rescheduled for November. Major championships like the U.S. Open and the Open Championship were also affected, with the former being postponed and the latter being canceled altogether.

Additionally, regular PGA Tour events were either postponed or canceled, causing a significant reshuffling of the tour calendar. The FedExCup Playoffs, which typically serve as the culmination of the season, were also altered, with the number of events reduced and the schedule condensed.

Effects on Player Participation

The schedule changes and cancellations resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on player participation. With tournaments being postponed or canceled, players faced uncertainty regarding their competitive opportunities and the ability to earn FedExCup points.

The disruptions to the schedule meant that players had to adapt and adjust their training and preparation routines. Many players were unable to compete for an extended period, leading to concerns about maintaining their form and rhythm when play eventually resumed.

Furthermore, travel restrictions and health protocols introduced by various countries and regions made it challenging for international players to participate in tournaments. The need to quarantine upon arrival in certain locations and the risks associated with traveling during a pandemic created additional hurdles for players.

The limited number of tournaments and condensed schedule also meant that players had to carefully select the events they would play in. This required strategic planning to ensure they were maximizing their opportunities to earn FedExCup points and secure their positions in the rankings.

The pandemic also affected player morale and mental well-being. The uncertainties surrounding the virus and its impact on the tour created a sense of anxiety and stress among players. The absence of spectators further added to the unique and somewhat eerie atmosphere of the events.

Despite these challenges, the PGA Tour implemented strict health and safety protocols to mitigate the risks associated with the pandemic. Regular testing, social distancing measures, and the absence of spectators were among the measures put in place to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

Please note that the above paragraph is written in a conversational style and incorporates rhetorical questions and engaging language to maintain reader interest. International Representation

Number of international players.

The PGA Tour is known for its global appeal and attracts players from all around the world. The number of international players on the PGA Tour has been steadily increasing over the years, showcasing the growing popularity of golf on a global scale. Currently, there are a significant number of international players competing against their American counterparts.

The PGA Tour boasts a diverse field, with players hailing from various countries across the globe. This diversity adds to the excitement and competitiveness of the tournaments, as different playing styles and cultural backgrounds come together on the same stage. Player Development and Pathways

College golf and amateur competitions.

College golf and amateur competitions play a crucial role in the development of young golfers, providing them with opportunities to showcase their skills and compete at a high level. These platforms serve as important stepping stones for aspiring players on their journey to the professional ranks.

One of the main avenues for player development in golf is through college golf programs. Many talented young golfers choose to pursue their education while honing their skills on the golf course. College golf offers a unique blend of competitive play and academic pursuits, allowing players to grow both as athletes and as individuals.

In the United States, college golf is governed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and is divided into different divisions based on the size and resources of the schools. Division I programs are generally considered the most competitive, with top-tier golfers from around the country vying for scholarships and opportunities to represent their respective universities.

Golf scholarships are highly sought after, and college coaches actively recruit promising young players . These scholarships not only provide financial assistance but also offer a platform for players to compete against top-level competition. College golf tournaments are held regularly throughout the season, allowing players to gain valuable experience and exposure.

Amateur competitions also play a significant role in player development. These tournaments are open to non-professional golfers and provide a pathway for talented individuals to showcase their skills. Amateur golfers often compete in local, regional, and national events, with the ultimate goal of earning recognition and potentially turning professional.

The United States Golf Association (USGA) organizes several prestigious amateur events, including the U.S. Amateur Championship and the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. These tournaments attract the best amateur golfers from around the world and serve as a platform for players to test their skills against elite competition.

Amateur golfers also have the opportunity to represent their countries in international competitions such as the Walker Cup and the World Amateur Team Championship. These events not only provide players with international exposure but also give them a chance to compete alongside and against some of the best amateur golfers in the world.

In addition to college golf and amateur competitions, another pathway for aspiring professional golfers is the Korn Ferry Tour. Formerly known as the Web.com Tour, the Korn Ferry Tour serves as the developmental tour for the PGA Tour. It provides a stepping stone for players to earn their PGA Tour cards and compete at the highest level.

The Korn Ferry Tour features a season-long schedule of tournaments, offering players the opportunity to gain experience, earn prize money, and accumulate points towards promotion to the PGA Tour. The top players on the Korn Ferry Tour at the end of the season earn their PGA Tour cards for the following year, providing them with the chance to compete against the best players in the world.

The Korn Ferry Tour also offers a pathway for players who may not have gone through college golf or traditional amateur routes. It serves as a platform for aspiring professionals to showcase their skills and work their way up through the ranks. Many successful PGA Tour players, including major champions, have come through the Korn Ferry Tour, highlighting its importance in player development.

Diversity and Inclusion

The PGA Tour recognizes the importance of diversity and inclusion within the sport of golf. Efforts have been made to increase diversity and promote equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of their background. Additionally, the representation of women and minorities within the PGA Tour has been a focus, with initiatives in place to encourage their participation and success.

Efforts to Increase Diversity

The PGA Tour is committed to increasing diversity within the sport and has implemented several programs and initiatives to achieve this goal. One of the key efforts is the PGA Tour Diversity & Inclusion Initiative, which aims to create a more inclusive and diverse environment for players, fans, and employees.

Through this initiative, the PGA Tour collaborates with various organizations and partners to provide opportunities for underrepresented individuals to participate in golf. This includes outreach programs, scholarships, and mentorship opportunities for aspiring golfers from diverse backgrounds. By providing support and resources, the PGA Tour hopes to encourage more individuals to pursue a career in golf and break down barriers that may have previously limited their participation.

Furthermore, the PGA Tour has also established partnerships with organizations that focus on promoting diversity and inclusion in sports. By working together, these organizations aim to create a more inclusive golf industry that embraces individuals from all walks of life. This collaborative effort helps ensure that diversity and inclusion remain at the forefront of the sport’s development.

Representation of Women and Minorities

The representation of women and minorities within the PGA Tour has been an area of focus in recent years. The tour has taken steps to encourage and support the participation of women and minorities in professional golf.

In terms of women’s representation, the PGA Tour actively supports and promotes the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour, which is the premier women’s professional golf tour. By showcasing and highlighting the talent of female golfers, the PGA Tour aims to raise awareness and increase interest in women’s golf. This not only helps to diversify the sport but also provides female golfers with more opportunities to compete at the highest level.

When it comes to minorities, the PGA Tour has implemented programs to encourage their participation and success. One such initiative is the PGA Tour Diversity Collegiate Championship, which provides a platform for student-athletes from historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to compete against their peers. This tournament not only showcases the talent of these individuals but also provides them with exposure to professional opportunities within the sport.

Additionally, the PGA Tour works closely with organizations such as the National Minority Golf Foundation and the First Tee Program to promote golf among minority communities . These partnerships help to break down barriers and provide access to golf for individuals who may not have had previous exposure to the sport.

In conclusion, the PGA Tour is actively working towards increasing diversity and promoting inclusion within the sport of golf. Through various initiatives and partnerships, the tour aims to provide equal opportunities for individuals from all backgrounds to participate and succeed in professional golf. By fostering a more inclusive and diverse environment, the PGA Tour helps to ensure that golf remains a sport that is accessible and welcoming to all.

What’s The Difference Between A Tour Pro And A PGA Pro?

Modern golf professionals make their living in a variety of ways

Michael Block plays an iron shot

First thing to say when looking at the difference between a Tour Pro and a PGA Pro is that the two are not mutually exclusive – a PGA Pro may often play as a Tour Pro, competing in the same events, and many Tour Pros are also PGA Pros.

But at both ends of the spectrum of what golf professionals do for work, there are clear differences in how your average Tour Pro and regular PGA Pro earn their coin.

Here, in a nutshell, is how the Tour Pro and PGA Pro ply their trades -

Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy is one of the most famous and successful Tour Pros, who competes in all the Majors and biggest PGA Tour events

A Tour Pro or touring professional golfer predominantly aims to make their living by enjoying a successful competitive playing career. They focus their energies on getting everything they can from their games. The modern tour pro is an athlete who will spend every day trying to improve – practising golf, working on fitness , nutrition, mental strength … Exploring all avenues to give them a competitive edge.

Whether they compete at the very highest level – The PGA Tour, The DP World Tour, LPGA or LET circuits, or even the new LIV Golf tour – or at a lower level on a feeder tour or domestic circuit, their principal focus is winning golf tournaments, or at least finishing as high up on the final leaderboard as possible to earn prize money and status to get their name noticed by potential sponsors.

Across the globe there are thousands of Tour Pros, plying their trade on numerous circuits in each corner of the golfing globe. Those on the lower rungs of the ladder may be trying to climb upwards through the rankings to reach the loftier heights of the professional game – to play in those televised tournaments we see each week on the main pro Tours and even to make it into the Majors.

There will also be Tour Pros who play at a lower level and are content to stay at that level – In some cases being a bigger fish in a smaller pond can be more lucrative. The cost of playing on one of the main, international, professional tours is extremely high due to travel fees, hotels, food, caddies, insurance etc. and, if a Tour Pro doesn’t enjoy a level of success, they can easily spend more than they earn.

Playing a circuit closer to home with lower prize funds is a more sensible financial set-up for many, given the far lower expenses incurred.

Tour Pros will supplement the prize money they earn with sponsorship money from golf manufacturers and businesses outside of golf. They will have a certain number of responsibilities each year through their sponsorship deals – to meet clients of their sponsor, to deal with the media, to use the right equipment and wear the correct badges/labels on the golf course.

At the highest level, these sponsorship deals will often earn the top players more money than they pick up in prizes. At a lower level, the sponsorship deals are often crucial to keep the journeying professional afloat.

PGA Professional

PGA Draft

A PGA Professional is a member of the Professional Golfers’ Association. To become a member of the association in this country one must undertake a three-year training programme which since 2003 has been a nationally recognised qualification – a Foundation Degree in Professional Golf.

You also have to obtain an Association of Sports Qualification’s Level 2 certificate in coaching golf, as well as attaining a first aid certificate, undergoing a background check and to have competed at a professional level to an agreed standard – it’s a highly regarded qualification and one that opens doors .

The options for a PGA Professional are wide ranging. These days, there’s a great deal more to choose from than the inaccurate old cliché of simply, “selling Mars bars in a shop.” PGA Professionals work in coaching, managing, retail, administration and manufacturing. From designing courses to coaching an elite player – there are hugely exciting options to explore.

There is also the opportunity to work all over the world – The PGA in the UK has 8,000 members, with 1,500 of these working internationally in more than 80 countries. The PGA of America has tens of thousands of members, with 20 of its PGA Pros earning a spot into the PGA Championship Major each year - that's how Michael Block skyrocketed to fame after his incredible T15th finish in 2023.

Michael Block is the head pro at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, California

The modern PGA Professional working at a golf club or facility has a raft of responsibilities that far exceed those of the traditional “club pro.” The role has transformed from that of a shopkeeper doing the odd repair job and giving an occasional lesson to one that’s far more dynamic with PGA Pros involved in at least some, if not all areas of golf club management as well as coaching, PR, finance, retail and sharing general golfing expertise in equipment, technique, Rules and golf technology.

Once a member of the PGA, it’s possible to progress up the ranks – from PGA Professional to PGA Advanced Professional, PGA Fellow Professional, PGA Advanced Fellow Professional, then, at the top of the pile – PGA Master Professional.

But, of course, most PGA Professionals are in the business because they love golf and there are many opportunities for PGA Pros to play the game competitively – there are PGA events in every region and, as qualified pros, they are able to enter qualifying for larger events and even tours. Ryder Cup players like Paul Lawrie and Ian Poulter began their careers as PGA assistant professionals and made their way into Tour golf.

The fundamental difference between a Tour Pro and a PGA Pro is a Tour Pro predominantly makes their living from playing the game, whereas a PGA Pro makes their living by using their knowledge of golf to instruct, manage, sell, make or promote within or around the game.

Inside the world of PGA sponsorship and the impact it has on the game

Professional golfers are some of the most recognizable athletes in the world, and their success is not only measured by their wins and losses but also by their endorsement deals. Sponsors play a significant role in the success of a golfer, providing financial stability and exposure to fans all over the globe. However, these sponsorships can have an impact on the way the game is played and the players who participate in it.

Sponsorship dollars can help golfers achieve financial freedom, allowing them to focus on their game and compete at the highest level. But with sponsorships come expectations, and golfers must balance their obligations to their sponsors with their desire to win. Additionally, sponsorships can create rivalries among players, as brands compete for the attention of the public.

The Impact of Sponsorship on Golfers

  • Financial Stability: Sponsorship deals can provide golfers with financial stability, allowing them to focus on their game and compete at the highest level.
  • Expectations: Golfers must balance their obligations to their sponsors with their desire to win, which can be a delicate balance to strike.

Ultimately, the relationship between sponsors and golfers is a delicate one, requiring a careful balance between financial gain and on-course success.

Golf Club Distance Charts By Age, Gender And Skill Level

Last Updated on January 9, 2024 by Matt Greene

How far should you hit the ball?

How do you compare to others?

It's always good to know that age, gender, and skillset are the biggest differentiators so you don't make unrealistic comparisons.

I did so much research on this article to bring you the most up to date information to help you quickly skim the tables and charts about golf distance.

golf tour levels

My golf distance charts show the key elements that influence how far you can hit each golf club:

  • Swing speed
  • Smash factor
  • Quality and optimization of equipment

These factors are all heavily influenced by your physiology, skill, age and strength or flexibility levels. Very often, you can optimize each area, with some training or coaching or both.

Golf Club Distance Chart by Swing Speed

Swing speed is a major determining factor the golf club distances. It is not the only factor but if 100 people strike the ball the same, the fastest swings will carry the ball further.

  • Most golfers are around 90 mph driver swing speed.
  • The average swing speed on the PGA Tour is around 114 mph.
  • 150 mph is the top range and only long drive competitors will be swinging toward this range.

NOTE: The swing speed at the top of each column is driver swing speed. We use this as a general gauge to estimate the distance of each club thereafter.

golf tour levels

How do I swing the club faster?

You've compared yourself to the numbers in the chart but you want to hit it longer. Almost everyone does and there are 3 ways to swing the club faster:

  • Get lessons on proper mechanics with a professional swing coach. They will utilize all your physiological elements and limitations to the maximum, as well as help you hit the ball in the center of the club face. You can add as much as 10 mph to your driver swing speed with correct technique.
  • Get stronger and more mobile in the gym. Strength training plus mobility work with a trainer will increase your swing speed guaranteed. You will have a wider range of motion in your muscles and your strength will 100% translate into more speed. You can add 10-20mph to your swing depending on how advanced your strength and mobility currently is.
  • Get lighter golf equipment fitted to your swing. Lighter shafts can help increase your swing speed 2-5 mph.

These are the only ways to improve swing speed but the MOST important factor is the coaching and practice so that you can HIT THE SWEET SPOT of the golf club.

The center strike means you send as much energy into the ball as possible and we measure how well you hit the ball using the Smash Factor.

What is  Smash Factor ?

Smash Factor is ball speed divided by club speed.

For example: 150 mph ball speed / 100 mph swing speed = 1.50 Smash Factor

The number calculated gives a ratio to show how much energy is moved from the club head to the golf ball at impact.

Low Smash Factor numbers mean less energy is transferred, while higher Smash Factor numbers mean you send more energy from your golf club into the golf ball.

The optimum Smash Factor number for excellent ball striking with the driver is 1.50 Smash Factor.

Ideal Smash Factor for every club

The PGA Tour golfers are the best in the world so we can use their averages to assume the best smash factors in the world. If you can attain these smash factor numbers as stated by Trackman , you are striking the ball as good as you possibly can.

Note how the smash factor decreases as the loft increases.

smash factor for pros

Skill level affects smash factor

Distance is affected by the swing speed but MAINLY the quality of the strike related to that swing speed.

In other words, how close to the center of the club face you hit the ball will determine how your swing speed power is transferred into the golf ball.

If you employ a swing coach, they will assist you in hitting the ball in the middle of the face, or closer to the middle.

That will take your existing swing speed and optimize it by being more efficient with where you hit the ball on the club.

The measurement we use for the quality of your strike is called Smash Factor.

Equipment affects swing speed and smash factor

The pros on tour have optimized equipment to their specific technique and skill level as well as body shape and strength.

The same swing speed in a PGA Tour pro will send the ball much further than an amateur golfer of higher handicap who has a similar swing speed.

The PGA Tour players technique is perfect so if you and a Tour pro hit the ball the same, the pro would still hit the ball further because their equipment has been customized to their exact swing.

A fitting can help to optimize your strength and swing for more distance.

Average Golf Club Distance For Male Golfers By Skill Level

From 'Good Golfer' onward, the 2 iron down to 5 iron should improve as confidence and technique improve, thus bringing more swing speed.

Beginner Golfer:  New to the game - first 6-12 months.

Average Golfer:  15-24 handicap .

Good Golfer:  6-14 handicap.

Excellent Golfer:  Below 6 handicap.

golf distance chart by skill levels

Swing speed charts by age and gender

Swing speed is a vital factor in determining the distance you hit the ball.

The swing speed, with a strike near the middle of the club face makes the ball go further.

A poor strike with high swing speed will go less distance.

A pro golfer swinging at the same speed as an amateur gets wildly different distance numbers because they hit the ball in the center of the face often.

Therefore, if you want to improve your distance with the same swing speed, you can work on improving your strike closer to the middle of the face.

Average swing speed by age and gender chart

In this chart we show the 50th percentile driver swing speed for each gender and age range according to the research done by TPI .

Driver Swing Speed Chart by Golf Skill Level

Confidence and skill make a big difference when hitting the driver efficiently and out the sweet spot.

Beginners with a driver  will be more tentative and have less effective mechanics.

Mid handicappers will be more adept at the driver  because of experience or lessons.

Advanced golfers swing with confidence from hitting a lot of golf balls and taking lessons with a pro.

PGA Tour golfers have optimized every aspect of the game with the driver and are the very tip of the spear.

Is a 250 yard drive good?

Yes it is very good.  According to Arccos  and Shotscope , between 15% and 31% of golfers hit 250 yards or more.

Here is a video of me breaking it down.

is 250 yards a good drive?

Ball Speed To Club Head Speed Chart for Driver

The ball speed off the driver face is dependent on the strike.

If your strike or Smash Factor is good, you will hit the ball further with your swing speed than the same speed with a bad strike.

Below, we take the club head speed and use a Smash Factor of around 1.42 which is 0.08 away from a perfect strike.

Ball Speed To Club Head Speed Chart for Driver

What swing speed hits 250 yard drives?

A swing speed of around 105 mph with the driver, and ball speed of around 150 mph  will produce a 250 yard drive.

Ball Speed To Club Head Speed for 7 iron

A 7 iron optimal smash factor is 1.33. That is the PGA Tour average.  Remember for the driver it is 1.50

The ball speed off the 7 iron is determined by the swing speed and smash factor.

As the clubs get shorter, the ideal smash factor actually changes.

What distance will you get from a 7 iron at every speed of swing?

What swing speed hits the 7 iron 150 yards?

A swing speed of around 76 mph with the 7 iron, ball speed of around 105 mph and dynamic loft of 21°  will produce a 150 yard carry shot.

Golf Club Distance Charts Other Important Factors

Every club has a different loft and more loft goes less distance, while less loft goes longer distance in combination with longer golf shafts.

Driver usually goes furthest while the lob wedge around 60 degrees goes the shortest.

The golf clubs of today go a lot further since the manufacturers started creating cavity back golf clubs in combination with lower lofts for the same clubs.

Every club is between 2 and 5 degrees lower in loft in the current day, which automatically increases distance by up to 15 yards per iron compared to prior times. Driver lofts cannot get much lower as people will not be able to hit them. In order to hit a driver with a loft below 9 degrees, your swing speed needs to be incredibly fast.

An important factor to note for slower swing speeds, is that a higher lofted fairway wood or higher lofted driver can actually GAIN you distance because low lofted clubs are harder to launch at slower swings. Most golfers should be playing fairway woods with a loft that does not go below 16 or 17 degrees .

The club heads are bigger for all golf clubs in modern times with much larger sweet spots. With the addition of lighter shafts in both the irons and the woods, the ball speeds and swing speeds are higher as well. Check out our article on the flex of shafts in the current game.

Golf Club Distance Charts of PGA Tour Golfers

Why are modern golfers longer than prior generations, physical fitness.

Most modern pros are in the gym multiple times per week and in the physio offices often. In prior generations during the Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus days, the pros were regular people who even used to enjoy a smoke and a drink on the course.

Bryson Dechambeau is an example of someone who bulked up in order to hit it further and it made a big difference. The side effects of that can be disputed as he has slimmed down again.

Tiger Woods was one of the first modern day pros to begin working in the gym. His huge transformation to a big, strong guy inspired a whole new generation of golfers and now most up and coming pros are hitting the ball longer than even this generation of pros.

Club advancements

Lofts have changed and the lower lofts in irons will change how far the ball appears to go with the same 'number' iron.

A 7 iron from the 80s may have had 40° of loft while a current 7 iron can have as low as 28° of loft. That 12 degree difference makes a 20-30 yard difference in distance.

The other important factor especially with the woods and drivers, is the materials of the clubs. The drivers now are lightweight titanium and carbon, with graphite shafts, optimized for huge distance.

That alone makes an astonishing difference when we compare to the old persimmon wooden clubs and heavy steel shafts.

The golf ball changed a lot with the release of the Pro V1. Golf balls just went further than ever before.

They spin less, they go straighter and they have advanced to a point that the ruling authorities of golf want to make them go shorter to preserve the golf courses.

If the pros hit the ball too long, they need to extend the golf courses, and there is a lkmited amount fo land available.

The balata golf ball is significantly shorter than the current urethane covered solid core golf balls they use today on the Tour.

You can compare how you shape up against the average golfer, the senior golfer, the pro golfer and the advanced golfer.

The key though is to understand your own game and your distances so you can more effectively plan your game and piece together a good golf score. When you fully understand and accept your distances that you hit the golf ball, you will score better.

For the pros and the advanced players, the distance they hit each club is not a matter of ego. It's a matter of 'which club gets the job done?' and they use that.

You can too, whichever distance you hit it.

Top 70 and ties after 36 holes will advance to the third and fourth rounds

Change Text Size

The 156-player field at the PGA Championship will be cut to the top 70 and ties after the completion of 36 holes.

Due to an 80-minute delay at the start of Friday’s second round at Valhalla Golf Club, located in Louisville, Kentucky, there’s a chance that the 36-hole cut will not be made until Saturday. After the first round at Valhalla, the cut line was projected at even-par.

The PGA Championship’s cut rule differs from a typical 156-player PGA TOUR event, in which the top 65 and ties after 36 holes advance to play the third and fourth rounds. The Masters field (89 players this year) is cut to the top 50 and ties after 36 holes. The U.S. Open field is cut to the top 60 and ties after 36 holes. The Open Championship uses the same format as the PGA Championship, with a cut to the top 70 and ties after 36 holes. THE PLAYERS Championship, like most Full-Field PGA TOUR events, cuts to the top 65 and ties after 36 holes.

In the event of a tie for first place after 72 holes at this year’s PGA Championship, there will be a three-hole aggregate score playoff on holes Nos. 13, 17 and 18 at Valhalla Golf Club. If still tied, there will be a hole-by-hole playoff (sudden death) on Nos. 18, 13, 17 and 18, repeated.

The PGA Championship became a stroke-play event in 1958, after the event utilized a match-play format for its first 39 iterations.

Why are pros using laser rangefinders, gps at the 2024 pga championship, share this article.

golf tour levels

The PGA of America announced back in 2021 that it would allow the use of distance-measuring devices in its three professional major championships – PGA Championship , KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship – starting that year.

The devices made their first appearance at the 2021 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s Ocean Course in South Carolina.

“We’re always interested in methods that may help improve the flow of play during our Championships,” said Jim Richerson, then the president of the PGA of America. “The use of distance-measuring devices is already common within the game and is now a part of the Rules of Golf. Players and caddies have long used them during practice rounds to gather relevant yardages.”

The PGA of America became the first major body to allow the devices in all its premier professional events. There had been speculation for years that such devices might help speed play, as players and caddies don’t have to walk off yardages to sprinkler heads and other fixed positions.

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP :  How to watch  |  Tournament hub | Friday tee times

The United States Golf Association’s Rules of Golf have allowed the use of laser rangefinders and GPS devices in casual play and tournaments since 2006, but a local rule allowed a tournament committee to ban such devices. At elite professional levels of play, the devices still have not been embraced for competition rounds, though they have been allowed in the U.S. Amateur since 2014. They are still not allowed during competition rounds at PGA Tour events or at the U.S. Open and British Opens.

In keeping with Rule 4.3a (1), the devices allowed can report only on distance and direction. Devices that calculate elevation changes or wind speeds, or that suggest a club for a player as well as other data, will not be allowed.

The devices aren’t new for the pros, many of whom already use laser rangefinders and GPS in practice rounds.

Many laser rangefinders provide information on elevation changes and “plays-like” distances. Most of those devices come with a switch to turn off such information, but many elite players opt for devices that do not provide elevation and other data as a precaution against forgetting to turn off those functions.

‘It’s 100 percent backwards’: Major winner blasts PGA Tour board structure

  • Follow on Twitter

Lucas Glover at the Wells Fargo Championship last week.

As the politicking for the future of men’s professional golf has grown fiercer and more convoluted, the game, at its highest levels, has morphed into some combination of Survivor and Succession . There are boards and committees, factions and allegiances, infighting and ousters — much of which has bubbled up in the run-up to this week’s PGA Championship .

On Monday, Jimmy Dunne, who helped secretively script the bombshell 2023 framework agreement between the PGA Tour and Saudia Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, announced he was stepping down from the PGA Tour’s board, of which a year ago he was arguably the kingpin, perhaps the only dealmaker who had the trust and respect not only of the Tour’s executives and most influential players but also of PIF chief Yasir Al-Rumayyan . But when the players’ trust of the Tour eroded in the days and weeks after the June 6 agreement, so, too, did Dunne’s negotiating power. He was boxed out.

Dunne’s resignation — dismissal, really — has been a hot topic this week in Louisville. Jordan Spieth called Dunne’s departure a “loss.” Tiger Woods said the move was a “bit surprising,” adding what Dunne has “been able to do for the PGA Tour has been great.” Seth Waugh, the PGA of America’s chief and a former Deutsche Bank CEO, said of Dunne: “He’s a very thoughtful guy and he’s a grownup and he obviously has his own reasons for what he did. I wish his timing had been, you know, different than the Monday of our major.” (Patrick Cantlay, a board member who has denied rumors that he has outsized board sway, did not have a pre-tournament press conference.)

Mixed reactions, which is what you might expect given the splintered state of men’s pro golf in 2024. Dunne did have at least one bold-faced name in his corner, Rory McIlroy. When McIlroy met the press Wednesday, you sensed when it came to L’Affair Dunne he was itching to get some things off his chest . McIlroy called Dunne’s resignation “a huge loss for the PGA Tour, if they are trying to get this deal done with the PIF and trying to unify the game. Jimmy was basically the relationship, the sort of conduit between the PGA Tour and PIF. It’s been really unfortunate that he has not been involved for the last few months, and I think part of the reason that everything is stalling at the minute is because of that. It’s really, really disappointing, and you know, I think the Tour is in a worse place because of it.”

Waugh, speaking more generally of the two sides’ efforts to forge a pact, said the situation is “messy, and it has been, and it seems to get messier every week.” The messiness, at least in part, has been created by who , on the PGA Tour side, will ultimately decide the terms of a deal. When Woods was appointed to the policy board last August, the players, for the first time, assumed a 6-to-5 board majority. Cantlay has said that edge is not as significant as it sounds, because “any major vote around any of the things we’ve been talking about requires a two-thirds majority.” But at least some of the Tour’s rank and file aren’t so sure, and one of them — 2009 U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover — earlier this week was not shy about saying so.

“I’m probably gonna irritate my peers and fellow tour players by saying what I’m about to say…” Glover began, speaking on his SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio show; joining Glover, in role of co-host, was his agent, Mac Barnhardt.

“For a long time the players were outnumbered on the board, five to four,” Glover continued. “And a lot of players thought that it would never be our tour if we didn’t have the majority. Well, I think we’re seeing why it was that way now. We do have the majority and we have no business having the majority. Tour players play golf. Businessmen run business. They don’t tell us how to hit 7-irons. We shouldn’t be telling them how to run a business. And we are running a business now. And we’re all on the same team because this for-profit entity that’s about to launch needs to get right. It needs to be right. And players that think they know more than Jimmy Dunne, players that think they know more than [independent director] Ed Herlihy, players that think they know more than Joe Gorder [another independent director], players that think they know more than Jay Monahan, when it comes to business, are wrong.”

Rory McIlroy speaks to the media on Wednesday at the PGA Championship in Louisville, Ky.

Rory McIlroy calls sudden PGA Tour governance change ‘concerning’

Fair take? Spieth, for one, would say it is not. On Tuesday, Spieth wasn’t questioned directly about Glover’s remarks, but he was asked whether he feels if he and his fellow players now have more control over the direction of the Tour.

Yes, Spieth said, players do have more of a voice and influence than they did, say, five years ago, but not so much that they’re running the joint to the ground or putting the Tour in a precarious position. Spieth contended the Tour’s “governance is in a very sound place,” adding “players on the PGA Tour can feel really good about it, as well as not having players making business decisions. If you’re in the room, it’s very obvious that players are not dictating the future of golf and the PGA Tour. Like, it needs to be, you need to have everyone’s perspective on both sides of it, and everyone that’s involved within Enterprises. You have a lot of strategic investors that know a heck of a lot more than any of us players.

“That’s a false narrative that the players are determining all these things.”

If that’s the case, Glover will need some convincing to believe otherwise. Here’s some more of what else he said on his show:

“It’s scary because we’re about to launch a huge, huge, huge enterprise and a for-profit company that all the players are gonna own a part of, and we don’t have the smartest possible people there to help us guide us in the right direction. That’s scary.

“I’m at the point in my career now and my future and my family’s future hinges on this, these decisions that are about to be made. So that’s why I’ve decided in the last few months to start speaking up. But the board situation and the way they’re gonna reach these decisions now is backwards. It’s 100 percent backwards. … The proof’s in the pudding, we had an opportunity to get this done and it didn’t get done. And now we’re losing the people that are the most effective and already had it done to be frank.”

Glover and Spieth’s portrayals of the situation are so at odds that you’d swear they’re talking about two different organizations. They’re not, but their wildly differing perspectives are a lens into the thorniness of where the men’s pro game has found itself. Players have needs and wants. So, too, do the tours. And the TV partners. And the sponsors. And finally, the most important constituency of all: the fans. Feeding all these mouths — and keeping those bellies nourished — is not easy. But the decision-makers must find a way to get there.

Waugh, who knows a thing or two about cutting deals, believes they will.

“I think both sides are not only committed to trying to find a deal but really need a deal,” he said Wednesday. “And in my history of deal-making, when both sides kind of need something to happen, it generally does.”

Golf: Women's British Open raises prize money to record levels

The Women's British Open set a new standard for prize money at the LPGA Tour majors by announcing Wednesday a record purse of US$5.8 million, with plans to boost it by an additional US$1 million for next year.

The winner this week will receive US$870,000 (NZ$1.26m), compared with the US$675,000 that Sophia Popov won last year at Royal Troon.

The Women's British Open starts Thursday at Carnoustie.

"We have set a new benchmark for prize money in women's major championship golf this week and, thanks to AIG, will build on it still further next year," said Martin Slumbers, chief executive of The R&A. "We hope this will inspire other events to follow our lead and help us to take a collective leap forward for the women's game."

The U.S. Women's Open still offers the biggest winner's check for the LPGA majors at US$1 million, though the total prize money was US$5.5 million.

Based on the traditional purse distribution on the LPGA Tour, next year's Women's British Open winner would receive US$1.02 million. Meanwhile, the USGA is closing in on a deal for a presenting sponsor that would raise prize money even more for the U.S. Women's Open.

Slumbers was bullish not only on the prize money — in 2022 at Muirfield, the purse will be more than double what it was in 2018 before AIG became involved — but he saw it as a chance for others to fall in line to boost equality in the women's game.

"With our partners at AIG, we are taking action to make change happen and sending out a strong signal that more needs to be done by everyone involved to grow women's golf," he said. "It needs greater investment and support from golf bodies, sponsors, the media and fans to help us grow the game's commercial success and generate the income and revenues necessary to make prize fund growth viable and sustainable."

The KPMG Women's PGA Championship and the Evian Championship both have a US$4.5 million purse, while the ANA Inspiration in the California desert offers US$3.1 million.

The CME Group Tour Championship in November has a US$5 million purse and is top-heavy to reward the season "Race to CME Globe" title. The winner last year, Jin Young Ko, earned US$1.1 million, while the two-way tie for second paid US$209,555 each.

Scottie Scheffler’s net worth in 2024

S cottie Scheffler’s net worth in 2024 is $90 million. Every decade or so, a golf er emerges on the PGA Tour that is clearly levels ahead of his peers. Scottie Scheffler has emerged as that golfer, and he cemented his case as the best golfer in the world with a win at the 2024 Masters.

Scheffler is now looking to win his second-straight Major at the PGA Championship in Louisville, Ky. However, he needs to avoid further confrontations with police to get it done. Let’s take a closer look at Scottie Scheffler’s net worth in 2024.

What is Scottie Scheffler’s net worth in 2024?: $90 million (estimate)

Scottie Scheffler is the newest winner of the Masters, and that accomplishment earned him a nice bump in his pay. Now, Scheffler’s net worth is around $90 million. This is according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Scottie Scheffler is only 27 years old, but his early success on the PGA Tour is already making him one of the highest-paid golfers in the world. He has reportedly made over $86 million on the PGA Tour throughout his career, including over $61 million on official PGA events.

Scheffler has earned significant winnings since he emerged as a professional golfer, but his career (and net worth) took a significant turn for the better in 2021-22. That year, he made $14,046,909 in winnings. He followed that up with a career-high $21,014,342 in winnings the following season and $15,093,235 in 2023-24.

The No. 1 golfer in the world saw his net worth boosted with his most recent win at the Masters. There, his purse was worth $3.6 million.

Scheffler followed up the Masters win with a victory the next week at the RBC Heritage for another $3.6 million purse. He became the first golfer to follow up a Major tournament win with a victory the following week since Tiger Woods in 2006.

After winning four of his five previous tournaments, Scheffler is looking to add another Major win to his resume at the PGA Championship in Kentucky.

However, in the early morning hours before the second round, Scheffler was arrested when he did not immediately comply with police commands when trying to drive past an accident to get into the golf club. Despite the arrest, Scheffler was able to return to the golf club before his tee time.

Scottie Scheffler’s career

Scottie Scheffler’s golf career began long before he became the No. 1 golfer in the world. Scheffler was born in New Jersey, and his interest in golf began at the age of three.

Scheffler eventually became one of the most prolific amateur golfers ever, as he won 75 times on the PGA junior circuit. He became the top-ranked junior golfer in the country in high school in 2014, and he even won state titles three times in high school.

Scheffler played his college golf at the University of Texas. There, he became the Phil Mickelson Freshman of the Year and helped his team win the 2017 Walker Cup.

As an amateur, Scheffler qualified for the US Open in both 2016 and 2017, and he even made the cut in the latter year. Scheffler graduated from Texas in 2018 and became a full-fledged professional soon thereafter. Scheffler became the 2020 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year as he finished fourth at the 2020 PGA Championship.

Despite his youth, Scheffler became the top-ranked golfer in the world by 2022. That year, he won the Masters for the first time. He was only the fifth golfer ever to win the Masters as the number one golfer in the world. Scheffler has already started off 2024 hot, with four tournament wins to his name already this year.

Scottie Scheffler’s endorsement deals

Scheffler’s consistent winning abilities have earned him plenty of purses in his still relatively young career, but because he is the top golfer in the world, he has also made plenty of money through endorsements.

Scheffler reportedly has brand deals with TaylorMade, Nike, Rolex, NetJets, Variety Community Banks, and others. He entered rare territory by winning the Masters for a second time, so the endorsement deals will likely continue coming in.

Scheffler is clearly the best golfer in the world, but were you surprised by Scottie Scheffler’s net worth in 2024?

Rory McIlroy: 2024 PGA Championship Press Conference

THE MODERATOR: Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, we are very pleased with welcome Rory McIlroy to the 106th PGA Championship. I believe you all saw the statement yesterday from Rory's communication team specifically that he will not be making any additional comments on his private life, so thank you all for respecting his wishes.

A win on Sunday at Quail Hollow and you won the last major championship here at Valhalla ten years ago. How do you feel coming into this week?

RORY McILROY: I feel good. Obviously had a great day on Sunday at a golf course that I've grown to love over the years and had a lot of success at, coming to a venue where I've had some success at before as well.

Obviously get to go back to Quail Hollow every year. Don't really get to come back here too much. Today was the first time I was on the golf course since ten years ago, so it was good to refamiliarize myself with the place.

The golf course is a little different than it was ten years ago, a little longer. A couple little minor changes but for the most part pretty much the same that I can remember from ten years ago.

But yeah, look, game feels good coming off the back of two wins, a fun one in New Orleans with Shane, and then a really good performance last week.

Just trying to keep the momentum going.

Q. How long has it been since you had this level of confidence in your game, and what other than the victories, what in the technical part of it is giving you that confidence?

RORY McILROY: Yes, I would say -- I think I was asked this question last week. I went on a run last summer, sort of from -- it was actually after this tournament. I felt like my game wasn't in really good shape after Oak Hill. Sort of needed to reset, work on a few things.

But then I came back out. I played Memorial, Canada, U.S. Open, Travelers, Scottish Open, Open, Playoffs. That stretch of golf, I think I had, like, ten top 10s in a row. I got the win in Scotland.

So my game felt pretty -- it doesn't seem like that long ago that my game has felt this good. But I would say from a technical standpoint, some of the shots that I hit last week, some of the three-quarter shots, some of the wedge shots, some of the iron shots, combined with, you know, how good I feel with the driver at the minute, you know, when I can see those three-quarter shots and those wedge shots going and starting on the right line, you know, that obviously gives me a lot of confidence.

Q. We've talked through the years about how you've tried to go back to a mentality of just show up somewhere, play a practice round, and then go out there and play free. When you come back here, do you think of the mentality that you had when you won here ten years ago, and do you try to use that again?

RORY McILROY: Sometimes I struggle to remember what I did yesterday. So I don't -- I think if I look that far back, I mean, it's hard to rekindle those feelings and those memories. I can vaguely remember, you know, coming here off the back of winning The Open and the old WGC at Akron.

But you know, I think it's all about confidence and momentum, and I have a lot of confidence and quite a bit of momentum coming into this week. So as I said at the start, it's just about trying to keep that going.

But as you say, like trying to play with freedom, I think this is a golf course that allows you to play with freedom because it's a big golf course. The corridors are wide, not too dissimilar to last week at Quail Hollow, so you can open your shoulders up off the tee and try to take your chances from there.

Q. Can I ask you about Jimmy's board resignation, what you thought about that and what the implications might be in your mind?

RORY McILROY: Yeah, honestly I think it's a huge loss for the PGA TOUR, if they are trying to get this deal done with the PIF and trying to unify the game.

Jimmy was basically "the" relationship, the sort of conduit between the PGA TOUR and PIF. It's been really unfortunate that he has not been involved for the last few months, and I think part of the reason that everything is stalling at the minute is because of that.

So it is, it's really, really disappointing, and you know, I think the TOUR is in a worse place because of it. We'll see. We'll see where it goes from here and we'll see what happens.

But you know, I would say my confidence level on something getting done before last week was, you know, as low as it had been and then with this news of Jimmy resigning and knowing the relationship he has with the other side, and how much warmth there is from the other side, it's concerning.

Q. So Shane Lowry mentioned that you told him that what you had off the tee, the driver at Zurich was the best you've ever driven the ball and you also said you like to play your way into form. Why is it that you are able to play your way into form?

RORY McILROY: So from a driving perspective, yeah, I think it's -- honestly it's probably the best driver I've had in the last few years.

I've really gotten comfortable with the driver, and I think some of the technical things in my swing are just a little bit better, and I'm -- the good drives are still very good but the bad drives aren't as bad so the misses aren't as wild.

And then -- sorry, what was the second part of the question?

Q. Just you've always historically said you like to play your way into form. Why is that the case for you?

RORY McILROY: Play into form. For me, it's not -- I can -- I can stand all day on a driving range and hit balls and not really learn anything. Because I think so many of us out here have got such great hands and have hit so many golf balls in our lifetime that we are just going to be able to figure it out some way. So you know, change a little feeling here or there. So to me, I learn the most about my game just by playing. I've played a lot this year. I've sort of figured out where my weaknesses are, what my tendencies are, how I can manage my game better, and yeah, I just -- after the win in New Orleans, I didn't pick up a club for six days. I hit balls for a couple of hours at The Grove on Sunday before going to Quail Hollow and I go and produce a performance like that.

I think you need to know yourself, and sometimes it's about grinding on the range and working on technical stuff, but at other times, it's just about getting on the golf course, playing with a card in your hand and understanding, you know, how you're playing a game.

I think that the one thing about golf, compared to any other sport is we don't practice on the field that we play on. So it would seem counterintuitive to spend all your time on the practice range instead of on the golf course. I've just tried to spend as much time on the golf course as I can.

Q. It's been quite a few years for you. How are your energy levels, and just on a personal level, how are you doing?

RORY McILROY: I'm ready to play this week.

Q. Given the success of Europeans in other major championships, can you put your finger on why they have had relatively little success in this championship?

RORY McILROY: I mean, I think if you think of quintessential American golf, I think golf courses that we go to for the PGA Championship are usually somewhat like these.

I would say Kiawah was a little bit different, or maybe even somewhere like Southern Hills a couple years ago. But yeah, I don't -- I mean, I don't know if I can put my finger on it. You know, it's the same thing. I think G-Mac was the first -- I don't know if he was the first European or the first British player to win the U.S. Open since Jacklin in 1970. These things are cyclical. I don't know if I can put my finger on it but just, you know, it's a big golf course, thick rough, soft-ish greens. That seems to be more of an American style of play.

THE MODERATOR: Thanks for your time, Rory. We appreciate it.
