Experience luxury befitting Kenya’s colonial governors when you stay at Governors’ Camp. Established in 1972 as a place for local leaders, it is still the accommodations’ standards that all others are measured by.

  • Great Value for money camp, located in the Masai Mara National Reserve
  • The tents are all en-suite, entirely canvased and lowly lit, enhancing the safari feel with basic and dark wooden furnishings
  • There is an abundance of game all year round, but during the months of July to October, the game is heightened as the Great Migration pass through these plains and cross the infamous Mara River.

You should know

  • Children of all ages are welcome at Governor's Camp

Named after the Maasai people who inhabit the area, and the Mara River, which flows through this great reserve, the Masai Mara National Reserve is a land of breathtaking vistas over endless game-filled plains. Contiguous with Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, it is known the world over for the awe-inspiring spectacle of the annual Great Migration over the golden savannahs. Whilst the migration is spectacular, the Masai Mara offers a constant and unparalleled flow of wildlife throughout the year.

Governors’ Camp nestles in the forest along the winding banks of the Mara River, it’s waters teeming with bird-life, hippo and crocodile, in the heart of Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve.

Some of the 37 tents line the riverbank, tucked into the forest they enjoy uninterrupted views over the Mara River, others have views across the sweeping plains of the Masai Mara. Created in 1972 Governors’ Camp set new standards in luxury for a tented camp. Today it’s still Africa’s best.

Everything is under canvas, all tents have en-suit bathrooms with hot and cold running water and flushing toilets. There is a bar tent with deck overlooking the Mara River and dinning tent with views over the plains.

Governors' Il Moran in Masai Mara National Reserve

Governors' Il Moran Camp

Lodge location Masai Mara Musiara Sector

One of the Masai Mara’s premier safari camps.

This is just the safari camp for those who would like to experience the next level of pampering and luxury. Each of the camp's guests is the personal guest of Il Governors' manager, assuring you he will take care of your every safari need. With colourful beaded chandeliers, chunky wooden tables, African artefacts and sunken fire pits, this camp offers guests just the right atmosphere for an extra special safari.

At a glance

Walk on the wild side, game drives, luxurious tented rooms, catch a balloon, bring the family, treat yourself, nearest airport, meet your hosts, sensational wildlife viewing, stay connected, glamping amidst gazelles and giraffes.

Governors' Il Moran is one of a collection of 'Governors' safari camps located in the Masai Mara National Reserve. Il Moran Safari Camp is small, intimate and pleasantly plush. Located within the National Reserve’s Musiara Sector , the camp is surrounded by a steady stream of wildlife and scenic views. The camp's ten very large luxury safari tents are tucked away amidst ancient trees deep in the forest lining the winding Mara River. The camp is traditional and permanent in nature, but blends in comfortably with its surroundings. Local wildlife is so at ease with the peaceful safari camp that you may occasionally see a giraffe or elephant strolling through camp. At night you’ll hear a local pod of hippo’s grunting in the darkness.

The camp's main communal area is tastefully furnished with dark chunky wooden tables, oversized blue couches, a colourfully beaded chandelier, African artefacts and tribal portraits. All decorations are an interesting mixture of contemporary meets traditional design. The entire communal area was recently raised and now sits on raised wooden decking. Fresh and appetising candle-lit dinners are served by waiters in the main dining tent overlooking the river below. Cooked breakfasts and lunches are generally served outdoors by the trees. In the evenings the fire pit is lit and you can enjoy one of your favourite drinks in the warm glow of its flames. The camp's staff is very attentive and their personal approach to customer service is aimed at making your stay extra special. The central common area also includes a cosy and comfy lounge area and bar, perfect for having a drink before dinner or after an invigorating safari. The lounge features clusters of comfortable sofas scattered with cushions accompanied by cowhide armchairs. Out on the wooden viewing deck overlooking the river you can settle into a wicker chair as you look out over the river.

Il Moran's ten spacious safari tents have recently been refurbished and have a noticeably light and airy feel to them due to the use of neutral tones of beige and greys. Each tent is furnished with a hand-carved king-sized olive-wood bed (made locally from reclaimed wood), a heavy wooden writing desk with copper lamp and a large comfy sofa. Floors are covered with heavy carpets and cowhides. The tents have large en-suite bathrooms separated from the bedroom by zip-up flaps. The bathrooms are equipped with twin washbasins, hot- and cold running water, lovely large walk-in showers and a freestanding claw-foot bathtub with shower attachment. The tents also have electric lamps, camera and mobile phone charging and plenty of African artefacts to enhance the safari atmosphere. The tents are set up upon large concrete stone plinths and fully mosquito proofed. On the front side of the tent lies a private verandah with wicker chairs and a hammock for lounging in. The tent has a generator that’s always running and which allows for charging of batteries and mobile phones.

Activities at Governors' Il Moran Camp

During the length of your stay you will have an opportunity to head out on up to three extended 4x4 game drives each day. The game drives are conducted within the Masai Mara National Reserve, not far from your safari camp. Most game drives take place in the national reserve’s Musiara Sector across Paradise Plain and up to Rhino Ridge. From the moment you step into the safari vehicle you’ll have a chance to spot wildlife from all angles. Il Moran's well-trained driver-guides will make sure you don’t miss any wildlife that passes by. If you wish you can choose to extend an early morning game drive to include a packed bush breakfast in a scenic location. Bush breakfasts generally include a good selection of cereals, fruit, fresh pastries and bread and the option to have a full breakfast cooked to order. Game drives also take place in the late afternoon. For an extra special safari adventure, you can choose to book a hot-air balloon ride at an extra cost.

Tripadvisor comments Governors' Il Moran Camp

Governors Il Moran is truly special. The game drives were amazing, so much wildlife. Back at the camp, sit and enjoy a cocktail while watching hippos and baboons play in the river. The staff and service are fantastic. Highly recommend! Definitely take the hot air balloon ride, a highlight of the trip! Marthagoodluxurytr
We had 4 days at Governors and could not have asked for more. From the welcome from Patrick to the fabulous food by Lillian and team, the protection of the guards, especially Stephen! Eveone there was polite, courteous but more importantly friendly and caring. But without our guide Paul we would not have seen so much and he was simply amazing. Above and beyond the guides we've had before. Tents are luxurious, food exceptional, peaceful environment (You get used to the hippos!). You are safe but not made to feel uncomfortable as the guards are discreet but always there. Thank you all. Rosie and "Mr Ian"! ELLISNottingham from Nottingham

Little Governors Camp

Little Governors Camp

An intimate and romantic Masai Mara camp

Luxury tents tucked around a large watering hole teeming with wildlife.

Little Governors (one of several award-winning properties in the Governors ' portfolio) is intimate in character with just 17 luxury en-suite tents tucked around a large watering hole that teems with both bird and wildlife. The camp is approached by a boat ride across the Mara River, followed by an escorted walk through the forest. Vehicles are left on the far riverbank, and the camp is quiet and undisturbed. This adds an adventurous element and makes your arrival really exciting.

Accommodation is in safari tents under canvas, each with a private veranda. The tents have an en-suite bathroom and hot water. In keeping with safari tradition, lighting is by gas and kerosene lantern or candlelight creating a beautiful romantic atmosphere. It's quiet, without feeling isolated, perfect for visitors who want a real safari experience, but with the comfort afforded by a medium-sized property.

Game drives at Little Governors are in custom built 4 wheel-drive vehicles, great for wildlife photography. Experienced guides take you out twice a day (morning and afternoon) on a game drive into the famous Masai Mara Game Reserve and surrounding areas. You can also experience game walks, local cultural visits to a nearby Masai village (manyatta) and day visits to Lake Victoria. Governors Hot Air Balloon safaris launch site is on the camp grounds and flights are followed by a champagne bush breakfast and game drive back to the camp is something you'll never forget. The icing on the cake for me, was seeing wildlife from the air, flying above the birds, and viewing Black Rhino and about 50 elephants on the game drive back to camp.
