Why visit Pico do Arieiro in Madeira?

Pico is the 3rd highest peak in Madeira, and it is accessible by car and just 2 minutes of walking! It is not every day that you can so easily stand on top of a land. Pico do Arieiro height: 1818m (5965ft) above sea level.

Summits around Pico do Ariero

Pico do Arieiro is a must-visit when traveling to Madeira. It offers views of:

  • dramatic mountain scenery with jagged peaks,
  • lush forested valleys,
  • the sea on both sides,
  • sea of clouds (sometimes),
  • magnificent sunrises (it is one of the most famous spot for a sunrise in Madeira).

Plus, it is the starting point of the most famous hike on the island: PR1 to Pico Ruivo.

About the name

There is no definitive explanation for the name. But, it is sometimes also written Pico Areeiro which can be translated to Megrim (a fish) or to Sandpit. So it is either related to the geology of the place or to the shape of the flat fish… Still a mystery!

WHEN – Best time to visit Pico do Arieiro (sunrise and more)

Let’s start with all my tips about the best time to visit Pico do Arieiro.

Best time of the year

First there is no best month. Madeira is a year-round destination. However mornings will be colder in Winter at 1800m in altitude… And crowds will be more important in Summer.

Sunrise at Pico do Arieiro

Best time of the day

  • Pico do Arieiro is famous for its sunrises – It is often above the clouds and you can see the sun rising above the sea of clouds.
  • It is said that Pico do Arieiro offers better visibility in the morning – it often starts the day above the clouds and then they can move up
  • It is also a nice location for sunset
  • It can be hot in the afternoon in Summer – and there is no shade

However, conditions can change all the time. Plus, one side of the island can be covered while the other is sunny. You never know – to take a decision I have 2 tips:

  • If during the day, check the webcam before starting your drive, you can see the current conditions at the summit (it updates every 15 minutes) – webcam here
  • If you plan on visiting early morning – download the app Madeiraweather (small fee) – it includes the weather forecast for the 2 summits Arieiro and Ruivo – but don’t forget it is only a forecast.

Peaks in the clouds near Pico Ruivo

Best weather to see Pico do Arieiro

I think the only weather you don’t want is dense clouds where you don’t see at 2 meters. Because then, there is no point. Apart from that, Pico do Arieiro is beautiful in all weather conditions:

  • Clear and no clouds – then you can see all the way down the valley
  • Above the clouds – you can still see the jagged peaks and it is impressive to walk above the clouds
  • With light clouds – even if the clouds go up a little, it can create a very moody scene where the peaks slightly disappear. It is less impressive, but creates another type of experience.

HOW to get to Pico do Arieiro – Road

As I mentioned before, it is not often that you can just drive to one of the highest point on a land. In just 40minutes from most towns on the East of Madeira, you can reach the carpark.

You first get up on road ER103 from Funchal or from Porto da Cruz. The turn is at Paso do Posio, near the Restaurant Casa de Abrigo do Poiso. Easy with clear road signs. And then, the road leading to it is in excellent condition, with one lane in each direction. Have a look:

road to Pico do Arieiro

There is no difficulty to drive up to the observatory. The turns are clearly indicated and traffic is not dense.

drive to Pico do Arieiro Madeira

Alternative road – Curral das Freiras

There is also a road connecting Curral das Frieiras to Pico do Arieiro. It is open only during the day in Summer and closed in Winter or in case of fire danger. This is a more difficult drive, as the road is narrower. However, there are hardly any cars on it, so the experience is not stressful. It is a great option to combine both attractions on the same day.

Need to rent a car in Madeira?

  • Compare prices on my favorite platform:   Discovercars.com – one of the best rated comparison sites!
  • Choose a car with enough power for the mountain roads
  • And choose a car not too big, to easily manoeuver
  • Consider their full coverage option – it for peace of mind!
  • Book early to have a large choice of vehicles!

See all my tips

FACILITIES – Carpark, restaurant…

And then you arrive…

There is a large carpark before the buildings. It is large for Madeira (where there are often only a few spots to park) but be aware that during the day it gets full and you might have to wait for a spot. By arriving before sunrise, you will find a parking place…

Pico do Arieiro carpark

Once out of the carpark, there is a building. Inside you will find:

  • a souvenir shop,
  • a snack-bar,
  • toilets (for a fee – you need cash)
  • an information center – Centro Freira da Madeira Dr Rui Silva

Pico do Arieiro shop

The café snack bar has a few tables outside with stunning views. I have not tried it. Reviews vary a lot.

Pico do Arieiro restaurant

VIEWPOINT – Miradouro do Pico do Arieiro & observatory

Once past the restaurant building, you can clear see the observatory dome: Encumeada Alta. And right next to it is the path to the summit.

Pico do Arieiro Viewpoint access

To be honest, the view from this viewpoint platform is not the best. It is just to say that you reach the summit. I recommend exploring around to get better views (see further in article). Plus, at sunrise, everyone flocks to that viewpoint. If you want peace and quiet, you definitively have to walk around.

The view you are seeing around is part of a pyroclastic complex. Basaltic dykes are protruding and resisting to erosion. The rocks date back from 5.3 to 3.6 million years ago.

Alternative viewpoint – Miradouro do Juncal

Before I share about the hike, you should know that there is another viewpoint. It is a little lower, but easy to access and with superb views towards the summits and the sea. Miradouro do Juncal is particularly interesting at sunrise, as you stay away from the crowds. Below is the view on the path to Miradouro do Juncal

Miradouro do Juncal

Access to Miradouro do Juncal

Once you pass the restaurant, take the path to the right of the observatory. It is a safe rock and dirt trail. It takes less than 10minutes to reach the viewpoint and you enjoy beautiful views along the way.

Miradouro do Juncal 2

You are a bit further away from the jagged peak, but the view is way more open on this side. With this 360° view you can enjoy:

  • the observatory,
  • the jagged peaks,
  • the lush valley,

Miradouro do Juncal 3

One a clear day, you can clearly see the volcanic “tail of Madeira” called Ponta de Sao Lourenço. Below is a zoomed picture:

Best views around Arieiro Peak

There are other views you can enjoy around the official viewpoint. Even if you don’t hike the whole PR1, which is a difficult hike, you can enjoy the beginning of the walk. There are stairs and slopes, but the views are well worth the effort. For example, you can head to :

  • The beginning of the hike PR1, once the view opens up to the North East
  • Miradouro do Ninho da Manta – where you are right up close with the jagged peaks
  • Pedra Rija – a bit further away where you are between the jagged peaks

Pico do Arieiro to Pedra Rija is 1.05km – it takes 1h to 1h30 return (with lots of picture time included).

Photos on the hike section below.

HIKE – Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo PR1

Pico do Arieiro is also the starting point of the most famous and most impressive hike on Madeira island: PR1 Verada do Areeiro. The trail is clearly indicated.  It is a return walk so you can do as much as you want / can and turn back.

This is the beginning of the trail:

PR1 Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo trail in numbers and details

  • 7km/4.3mi between the peaks
  • Plan 3h30 to 4h30 one way – to 7h to 9h return
  • Lots of stairs, and steep paths – moderate to streneous
  • Some vertigo inducing areas
  • The path is well-maintained, with a lot of safety railings
  • Via the O path (shorter) you take tunnels – you must bring a flashlight
  • Toilets at Pico do Arieiro (for a fee) and 500m before Pico Ruivo at the café (for a fee – need 50cts coins)
  • If you don’t want to walk all the way back, check out the alternative return at the end of this section (towards Achada to Teixeira)

The PR1 hike

It is really a stunning hike surrounded by jagged peaks and lush valleys. It is recommended to start early at sunrise to avoid the heat and have time to walk back. The path is really good with safety railings in many places, so you feel safe all the time. It goes around peaks, sometimes cut into them:

Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike stairs

First stop – Ninho da Manta

The first official stop along the way is a viewing platform on the side of a peak, a nice balcony over the valley. This is another great place for sunrise, if you want to walk here in the dark before.

Below is a view taken after the balcony, looking back towards it:

Ninho da Manta Balcony

Second stop – Pedra Rija

The path continues to be mesmerizing as you keep walking towards Pico Ruivo. You will, again, go up and down, but I think it is worth it. The next official named spot is Pedra Rija. Here you can learn lore about the flora and fauna in the area. This is one of the famous stop along the hike because of the very photogenic staircase from which you arrived:

Rest of the hike

I am not showing you all the steps of the hike. Best for you to be surprised. Just don’t miss the dead white trees around the snack bar.

At one point there is a choice of path (depending on potential closure – check the trail status ):

  • The East trail goes along Pico Las Torres, the 2nd highest peak in Madeira – it is longer but with stunning views
  • The West trail takes you into tunnels – it is shorter but with really steep stairs.

Along the way, you will notice caves cut in the rock. They were used as refuge with the cattle.

Pico do Arieiro Hike

Snack bar – refuge

500m before Pico Ruivo, you reach a snack bar. A great place to have a break and use the toilets (50cts with coins).

Pico do Arieiro Hike restaurant under Pico Ruivo

From there it is only uphill via staircase to reach Pico Ruivo, the highest summit in Madeira at 1861m (6106ft). There are several platforms for you to enjoy the views in all directions. This peak is a little more isolated, so the views are truly open for 360°. However, I think they are less impressive that those around Pico do Arieiro.

Pico Ruivo

And then you walk back…

Alternative – Pico Ruivo to Achada da Teixeira

  • From Pico Ruivo take PR1.2
  • 1h to 1h30 to reach the carpark
  • Call a cab to take you back to your starting point (don’t forget to take a taxi number before)
  • or organize private transfers

Other TIPS for Pico Areeiro – Packing and more

General tips.

  • Pack layers of clothes – it can be cold and windy or hot at the top of those mountains – better to have layers so that you can adapt to the conditions.
  • The more crowded times are between 10am and 3pm

Pico do Arieiro Sunrise tips

  • Arrive 45min before sunrise to choose your spot and see the beautiful light increasing
  • As described above in this article, the 4 main recommended sunrise spots are – Beginning of the hike to Pico Ruivo, Miradouro do Juncal, Miradouro Ninho da Manta and Pico do Arieiro viewpoint (most crowded).
  • Bring gloves – if, like me, you often get cold hands, I recommend gloves for the first 30minutes until the sun is warming you up

Hiking tips

  • Always check the trail status
  • Bring coins for the toilets,
  • Bring a flashlight for the tunnel,
  • Wear sturdy shoes,
  • Wear sunscreen,
  • Bring snack and lots of water
  • Thermal blanket – I never travel without one. In case of accident, keeping warm is essential.
  • And since I hike alone, I also take with me a  Garmin inReach Mini for added security – I take the lowest monthly subscription for one month, just to be able to use the emergency service button.

WILDLIFE around Pico do Arieiro

I also recommend to bring binoculars ( see my buying guide ) to discover the local birds:

  • The canary (Serinus canaria)
  • The pipit of Berthelot (Anthus berthelottii madeirensis)
  • The unicoloured trip hammer (Apus Unicolor)
  • The sparrow
  • The Finch of the trees (Fringilla Coelens Madeirensis)
  • The kinglet with triple stringcourse (Regulus ingnicapillus madeirensis)

One of the birds, Zino’s Petrel is nesting only on the Madeira archipelago, in rugged terrain – it became critically endangered by 2001. Thanks to conservation effort, it was in much better shape by 2010. In the evening, you may hear them around Pico do Arieiro:

Conservation efforts for the Zino's Petrel

Next to Ninho da Manta, I was lucky to see a bird very close with 4 babies. Not sure what it is though, I am no birdwatcher.

Along the hike, the trail connects the highest points of the island offering countless viewpoints of the colourful valley and rock. You go from peak to peak which is why it’s also commonly known as the “Pico to Pico” hike.

If high peaks are your thing, you’re going to want to do the Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike. Make the most of your exploration through Madeira’s highest peaks with the help of this guide.

What is the Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike?

The Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike is a 5.4km hike spanning from Pico do Arieiro (1,818m) to Pico Ruivo (1,862m) . This spectacular mountain path was constructed 50 years ago by the island’s administration and it connects the three highest mountains in dramatic fashion.

Pico do Arieiro is the 3rd highest peak in Madeira at 1,818m above sea level, and Pico Ruivo is a whopping 1,862m high and is the highest peak on the island. This hike offers insane views of Madeira’s beautiful mountains and rocky volcanic landscape along the whole trail.

While it’s a hike along the peaks of Madeira, along a good section of the trail from Pico do Arieiro you will be hiking downwards before the elevation towards Pico Ruivo.

madeira pico do arieiro tour

Hiking options at Pico do Arieiro – Pico Ruivo

There is only one trail for this hike (divided in PR1 and PR1.2) but there are several options for how to tackle it. Below we indicate the 3 most common options. The starting points are either Pico do Arieiro or Achada do Teixeira , which is where you can park your car and start your trail. Pico Ruivo is NOT accessible by car and can only be reached by walk.

Option 1: PR1 – ROUND TRIP: Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo and back – [Total distance 10.8km]

Option 2: PR1 to PR1.2 – One-way from Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo and ending in Achada do Teixeira – [Total distance 8.1km]

Option 3: PR1.2 to PR1 – Reverse trek from Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo and ending in Pico do Arieiro – [Total distance 8.1km]

madeira pico do arieiro tour

Which hiking direction is best?

We recommend starting at Pico do Arieiro in options 1 or 2 . This way you’ll face only a 400m of positive elevation gain and 700m of negative elevation gain (if you’re going all the way to Achada do Teixeira). If you do it the other way around – starting in Achada do Teixeira (option 3) and heading towards Pico do Arieiro, you will be looking at opposite values (+700, -400) and the hike will be significantly more challenging .

In option 1, you will walk the whole trail and back again. In option 2 you will need to rely on some mode of private transportation such as a car, a taxi, or shared transport once you get to the end of the trail.

Option 1 is the most budget friendly as you can do it entirely on your own with your rental car or shared bus.

Option 2 offers the advantage of more time to pause and explore along the trail, as it requires less walking overall without the need to backtrack.

CONSIDER STAYING OVERNIGHT: The views on these high peaks are particularly stunning at sunrise and sunset. If you want to extend your hike, consider boo king an overnight stay at the Casa de Abrigo do Pico Ruivo and hike back to Pico do Arieiro the next day. This mountain hut is located at the junction between PR1 and PR1.2 and it can only be reached by foot. Read more about it here .

madeira pico do arieiro tour

Since both Option 1 and Option 2 commence at Pico do Arieiro, our blog will primarily spotlight this starting point of the hike.

We’ll delve into the features, attractions, and essential information pertinent to this side of the trail, providing readers with comprehensive insights to enhance their hiking experience from the outset.

How to get to Pico do Arieiro

BY CAR: The starting points of this walk can either be Pico do Arieiro or Achada do Teixeira. However, due to the elevation chart of this path, it is recommended to start your hike in Pico do Arieiro . Pico do Arieiro is about 20km or 35 minutes from Funchal. Once you arrive, you can leave your car on at the free parking lot right on top of the mountain.

🅿️ Parking Update (2024): The parking situation has become a major issue at Pico do Arieiro in the recent years. New rules and restrictions have been introduced for parking on top of the mountain , near the radar . Since the end of 2023 however, a new parking lot has been built to accommodate more cars. The parking is free, it has a 200 cars capacity and it is located about 800m from Pico do Arieiro. However, it’s worth noting that even at sunrise, it tends to fill up quickly. To ensure you find a spot, it’s recommended to arrive even earlier and make the most of your visit without worrying about parking availability.

BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: As of 2024, there are still no scheduled buses that go anywhere near Pico do Arieiro. The easiest options to reach Pico do Arieiro without driving your own car are: joining a tour, sharing a taxi with other travellers, or looking for private companies that offer this type of transportation like Pico Transfers .

BY GROUP TOUR: The added value of choosing a group tour is getting to experience an exhilarating hike with a local guide that shares their knowledge and expertise of the Island’s hiking trails, nature, and environment, while also having all the transportation planned and organized ahead of time. The starting point of the hike was from option 2 on top of Pico do Arieiro. As a solo traveller, consider choosing a tour group like this one. You can share this incredible hiking experience and meet other travellers.

STARTING POINT:

Our local guide for the hike

We did this hike with a local Madeirian named Marcio from Madeira Wonder Hikes . Marcio is an expert guide and knows everything about the island. From the most popular hikes like that of Pico Ruivo to ones off the beaten path like the Vereda do Pesqueiro , this tour group leaves no stone unturned!

WHAT DID WE LIKE ABOUT MADEIRA WONDER HIKES?

  • Many hike options – From easy, moderate, to more difficult and advanced trails, you’ll find a hike that’s fit for you and the kind of experience you’re looking for.
  • Affordable prices – Hikes range start as low as €40 EUR ($45 USD) to about €60 EUR ($68 USD), including pick-up, breakfast and drop off.
  • Adaptability – We loved how Marcio adapted the pace and the breaks of the hike depending on his guests.
  • 3 key components to their hikes – off the beaten track, uncrowded tracks, and unspoiled landscapes.
  • Small groups – Groups are generally very small (2-4 people) and this ensures a greater experience.
  • Language options – The staff are fluent in Portuguese and English.
  • Equipment – Madeira Wonder Hikes will provide all the necessary equipment for hikes such as headlamps.

DETAILED GUIDE

Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike

This hike is divided in 2 sections: – PR1: From Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo – PR1.2: From Pico Ruivo to Achada do Teixeira

NOTE: If you follow option 1 and want to do this hike as a round trip, you will be only walking along the PR1 in both directions, so you can neglect the second part of the guide about the PR1.2.

PR 1 – From Pico Do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo Hike

The hike on the highest peaks of Madeira starts in Pico do Arieiro. After reaching the parking lot you’ll head straight through the Cafeteria Pico Arieiro (opens at 9:00 AM) where the PR1 Vereda do Arieiro trail begins.

Many people decide to do this hike at sunrise and it’s no secret why. The morning light makes everything more magical up here. In the winter months, there are higher chances of fog and rain up here, even when it’s clear and sunny down in the city of Funchal, so be prepared. When we visited in January, it was 4°C up on Pico do Arieiro, whereas it was 18°C in Funchal.

In our experience, the first part of the hike was very foggy but luckily it only lasted for a few minutes. Then, everything cleared up. It’s important to remember that weather conditions change quickly on these mountains .

Don’t give up hope if the weather isn’t perfect when the hike begins. Just make sure to double check the weather forecast and if rain is not predicted, a little fog may disappear after a while.

There is a negative elevation gain towards the very beginning of the trail. You will be hiking down and descending from 1,818m to about 1,500m. Watch out as this first part of the trail might be quite slippery, especially in the early hours of the day.

After approximately 20 minutes of walking, you’ll arrive at one of the highlights of this hike: Miradouro Ninho da Manta . This viewpoint is also known as the Buzzard’s Nest, and it is situated at an elevation of 1,744 meters above sea level.

Renowned as one of the most photographed viewpoints in Madeira, its popularity is well-deserved owing to its breathtaking vistas. From here you can enjoy a magnificent view down into the Ribeira da Fajã da Nogueira valley below!

As you proceed towards Pico Ruivo, the trail descends further until you reach Pedra Rija , another renowned landmark in Madeira.

This picturesque spot offers breathtaking views, especially during sunrise or sunset, making it a must-visit destination during your trip. Pedra Rija features stunning cliffs on either side, adding to the allure of this section of the trail.

After Pedra Rija you’ll descend the steepest part of the whole trail before reaching the Pico do Gato tunnel, a 50m long gallery sitting at 1,600m above sea level.

The tunnel is relatively high, however, at certain points, you will need to crouch down. Bringing a headlamp is recommended. There is a total of 3 longer tunnels and 2 shorter ones on the way from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, with the longest one being about 200m long.

After the first tunnel, the path divides into 2 paths. On the eastern side , you have the old, dismissed route around Pico das Torres. This trail has been abandoned for years after some major landslides and it’s not in use anymore. On the western side , you have the newer route, which is now the only way to get from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo. A sign [Pico Ruivo (O)] indicates the correct path, so you can’t go wrong. (O) means “Oeste”, Portuguese for “West”.

In spring, Pride of Madeira (Echium Candicans) flowers gives these mountains a very unique vibe thanks to their colorful panicles of purple flowers.

Also, many species of birds can be seen while you hike. Zino’s petrel, or “Freira da Madeira”, is among the most endangered birds in the world and lives exclusively by the sea. However, it can be spotted on the highest peaks of Madeira as they come ashore during the breeding season between late March and mid-October. Other more common birds and plants can be spotted all year round.

The trail continues along the side of a sheer rock face, with the path being carved directly in the rock at some points. The trail becomes quite narrow and at some points, it has partially collapsed . Be aware of that if you suffer from vertigo. It’s recommended to approach it sideways holding on to the rock face if possible.

madeira pico do arieiro tour

The trail continues to descend until it reaches the lowest point of the hike at about 1,542 m above sea level, some 3.4km after the start. Here, the climb up to Pico Ruivo begins!

The first part is also the toughest, it is the steepest part of the entire trail and you need some good legs to climb all the stairs. There is a mix of metal stairs and rock steps on this steep pathway to the ridge.

madeira pico do arieiro tour

After a short descent, the path goes through what was once a lush forest of heather trees. Unfortunately, the area was devastated by wildfires in recent years, leaving only the white skeleton-like trunks of these centuries-old trees behind.

Local authorities have been working hard towards the reforestation of the area. You can see new trees popping up under the white trunks, as well as in many other areas of Madeira.

After some hundred meters, the path PR1 finally meets with PR1.2 , the relatively short and easy trail that connects the parking lot of Achada do Teixeira with the mountain of Pico Ruivo. You will need to turn left, following the indications to Pico Ruivo.

After a couple of minutes, you will finally reach Casa de Abrigo, at about 1,775m above sea level. Casa de Abrigo do Pico Ruivo might be a lifesaver if you need a snack, a drink or if the weather turns bad.

Prices are slightly higher compared to other places in Madeira, but you get the chance to have something warm in the middle of your hike. We paid €1.80 EUR ($2 USD) for an espresso, €4 EUR ($4.50 USD) for a Madeira wine, €3 EUR ($3.40 USD) for a slice of Banana cake.

It is more like a mountain shelter than a hotel, but it is open to the public (it’s also the only accommodation up here). It’s basically a bar with beds.

STAYING OVERNIGHT AT PICO RUIVO

  • Cost per adult/night: €15 EUR ($17 USD) and payment is made upon arrival in cash. There is an ATM machine where you can withdraw cash from.
  • Includes: Bedding and access to the cafeteria’s kitchen to make your own food that you bring. The house does offer a cafeteria service where they make light meals and snacks like toast, eggs and sausage.
  • Excludes: Towels
  • Check-in: 14:00pm
  • Checkout: 12:00pm *Booking needs to be done ahead of time not upon arrival.

madeira pico do arieiro tour

Pico Ruivo is only 15-20 minutes walking distance from Casa de Abrigo! Hike up the stairs and get ready to conquer Madeira’s highest peak at a mighty 1,862m above sea level!

This part of the hike is not as demanding as some of the previous ones, but it still requires a little effort. This last section of the hike is about 500m long with an elevation difference of about 80m.

Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike

From the summit of Pico Ruivo you have 2 options: hike back to Pico do Arieiro or continue towards Achada do Teixeira. In this guide we describe the PR 1.2 path leading to Achada do Teixeira, where we would get picked up by our guide. If you plan on hiking back to Pico do Arieiro, follow the same path illustrated above but backwards.

PR 1.2 – From Pico Ruivo to Achada Do Teixeira

The way from Pico Ruivo to Achada do Teixeira is a very easy and enjoyable walk. The path is wide, never too steep and you have views of the ocean on one side and views of the peaks on the other. Sadly for us the weather worsened a little on our way to Achada do Teixera, but it was still clear enough to have some views.

Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike

The parking of Achada do Teixeira was our final destination. Thanks to Madera Wonder Hikes there was a car waiting for us at the end of the hike. Marcio took care of everything from hot coffee to biscuits, homemade cake, and Madeira wine ( Saúde or Cheers!).

Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike

From Achada Do Teixeira

⮞ TO PICO DO ARIEIRO – If you drove your own car all the way up to Pico do Arieiro, but you don’t feel like doing the same hike back, you can take a taxi from Achada do Teixeira to Pico do Arieiro. It is about 1 hour by car and it will cost about €70 EUR ($79 USD).

⮞ TO YOUR ACCOMMODATION – There are several options to do this hike one-way and not have to walk the same path again:

  • With a local guide : we did this tour with Madeira Wonder Hikes and not only did Marcio provided useful informations along the whole way, but he also provided us with the transportation to and from our accommodation. We loved it as we had the chance to decide the time of pick-up and we were the first ones up on Pico do Arieiro at sunrise.
  • With a shared transportation : Pico Transfers among others provides cheap transportation from your accommodation to Pico do Arieiro and back from Achada do Teixeira to your place. This is a great option if you are a solo traveller as it’s cheaper than taxi. The service costs €31 EUR ($35 USD) per person for sunrise (including the way back from Teixeira) and €29 EUR ($33 USD) for the morning.
  • By taxi : a taxi from Achada do Teixeira to Funchal will cost you about €60 EUR ($68 USD).

Round trip from Pico do Arieiro

If you have your own car and you don’t mind doing the same path twice, you can save some money by doing the round trip from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo (or vice versa). The hike would be exactly the same as described earlier, following PR1 and PR1.2 both ways.

The total length of this hike would be 10.8km, with a total elevation gain of about +1000m and a negative one of -1000m.

Best time to visit

BEST TIME OF THE DAY: Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo is one of those hikes you definitely want to do at sunrise. The light is just perfect and if you are lucky enough you’ll be literally walking on top of the clouds. Keep in mind that during high season the parking in Pico do Arieiro might be full from the late morning.

Another option would be to do this hike in the early afternoon and watch the sunset in Pico Ruivo.

BEST TIME OF THE YEAR: This hike can be done all year round, however you need to keep in mind that in the winter rain, wind and fog are more likely to be present. Also, even though the coast of Madeira still sees warm temperatures during winter months, on the peaks temperatures drop close to zero, and sometimes even below that.

Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike time

The hike from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo takes about 3 hours to complete (one way). The total duration of the hike is about 6 hours if you’re heading back to Pico do Arieiro, or 4:30 hours if you’re ending your trip in Achadas do Teixeira.

Sunrise viewpoint at Pico do Arieiro

Sunrise in pico do Arieiro is one of those experiences you really want to include in your trip to Madeira. The best sunrise viewpoint in Pico do Arieiro is Miradouro do Juncal, a 5-minute walk from the parking lot.

When the conditions are right, you may see the sun rising up over a sea of clouds.

Keep in mind this is one of those places that might get crowded even in the earliest hours of the day. However, not everyone who comes up here to watch the sunrise proceeds to walk the whole hike, so you shouldn’t be worried about the trail being packed.

TIP: Check out what time is sunrise and make sure to get up to Pico do Arieiro at least 30-45 minutes before that time. The early lights are well worth the effort.

Best tips for Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike

  • Bring an extra t-shirt and wear different layers. Warm clothes are necessary in winter months, as temperature may drop even below 0°C.
  • Go early if you want to come back on the same day.
  • Bring a light raincoat if the weather changes.
  • Don’t go if it’s bad weather – the trail can be slippery at some points and the wind can be extremely strong.
  • Bring a headlamp for the tunnels and make sure it’s fully charged before you go.

Snow in Pico do Arieiro

If you’re wondering whether you can see snow in Madeira or not, the answer is YES !

Winter months (December to February) are usually cold enough for Madeira to get some snow on its highest peaks. We were fortunate to see Madeira’s peaks covered in snow on our last day of the trip, and it was stunning.

TIPS FOR A SUNRISE AT PICO DO ARIEIRO

It’s hard to know what to expect when it’s your first time to Pico do Arieiro so I hope this helps. When you are heading up for sunrise these are the things you need to know.

  • Whatever time sunrise is, get there a minimum of 30 minutes early if not more. The glow will begin well before the official sunrise time. The glow on the clouds is beautiful and when I was there, everyone waited half an hour and then clapped when the sun finally burst over the horizon to begin the day!
  • There are a cafe and information center, which is where you will park. From there, most tourists head over to the hill area that views directly to the sun. This viewpoint is Miradouro Juncal and is on Google Maps. I will go into detail about the different viewpoint options in the section below but basically, this is a good place to start the adventure. It’s easy because it is a safe and very short walk from the parking lot and then you have a clear view of where the sun will rise. However, it isn’t the most epic spot of the two options. Miradouro do Ninho da Manta is really interesting at sunrise because you have the narrow paths, the balcony viewpoint, and lots of unique ridges whereas Miradouro Juncal is more of a basic hill viewpoint.
  • It can be a good idea to watch the sunrise at Miradouro Juncal and then do the hike to Pico Ruivo or at least head off in that direction on the trail and explore to the Miradouro do Ninho da Manta.
  • I thought it would be colder than it was. I wore pants, a beanie, and a down jacket but was never cold and took off all the layers as soon as the sun was out. I had expected it to be very chilly but it was mild. If it’s a windy day it may be a different matter.

Our sunrise as Pico do Arieiro was beautiful. As it was our first time, we watched the sunrise up over the clouds at Miradouro Juncal with about 100 other onlookers. The clouds didn’t float all the way through the valleys as they do sometimes but it was still a pretty special morning. After the sun had risen, we went back to the information center and then did a short little adventure to Ninho da Manta to check out the Balcony, which is quite similar in shape to the viewpoint at Vereda dos Balcoes .

BEST VIEWPOINTS AND LOCATIONS AT PICO DO ARIEIRO

Miradouro Juncal : This is the classic viewpoint very close to the parking lot. It looks out towards the ocean, directly to where the sun will rise. During sunrise, there will be hundreds of people gathered on this hill to watch the sunrise over the clouds. It’s very safe and there are dirt trails leading around the viewpoint. It is just a 5-minute walk from the parking lot and information center, which is why most people choose this viewpoint for sunrise.

madeira pico do arieiro tour

Miradouro do Ninho da Manta

This viewpoint has a balcony section that looks out over the valley. While it doesn’t face directly to the sun, you can catch the sunrise from this balcony. What’s great about this viewpoint is that most tourists can’t be bothered walking 1.2km from the parking lot to the balcony so you have hundreds of people at Miradouro Juncal and hardly anyone at Ninho da Manta.

The pathway to Ninho da Manta is a bit more interesting with a narrow path made of stone steps and a dirt trail that winds in, under, and around the formations of the mountain. Hand rails keep you safe but it is still a little bit of an adventure.

For photography, I would pick this viewpoint as there are lots of ridges, outcrops, the balcony, and many different angles on the stairs and pathway. Miradoura Juncal looked directly to the sun but offered a bit less in the foreground and was a bit more of a flat scene. Both were beautiful but I’m just offering some advice for fellow photographers who may only have one chance at a Pico do Arieiro sunrise.

madeira pico do arieiro tour

SUNSET AT PICO DO ARIEIRO

For those who aren’t keen on an early wake-up, you can still get some magical views at Pico do Arieiro as the sun sets and lights up the top of the clouds before diving beneath them. In fact, you can often have better lighting at sunset because the clouds have a softer glow before the sun dips below their thick layer compared to when the harsh morning light quickly bursts above them.

PICO DO ARIEIRO WEBCAM – CHECK BEFORE YOU GO

Before you make the journey out to Pico do Arieiro you may want to check the webcam. You can view the Pico do Arieiro webcam by clicking here . Obviously, if you are going for sunrise, you may not see much on the webcam but if you are planning to visit for sunset it can be very handy. The webcam updates every fifteen minutes so you can get a clear indication of the weather conditions at the summit before driving all the way across the island.

Checking the webcam becomes important when you consider that many people are hoping to watch the sunset or sunrise above a sea of clouds. However, on many days there are no clouds and you may be disappointed. The other main reason to check the webcam before you visit is that the weather is dramatically different on the opposing sides of the island. When one side is raining and cloudy, the other side can be perfectly sunny. So, it can be a good idea to check if it is gloomy and raining before you head away from the sunny side of the island to the doom and gloom.

BEST TIME TO VISIT PICO DO ARIEIRO

There are a few things to consider when considering when you should visit Pico do Arieiro. The key factors are: Time of day , time of year , type of weather .

Time of day: Sunrise and sunset are the most popular times to visit Pico do Arieiro. To watch the sunrise above the sea of clouds or set below the clouds and light them on fire is truly a bucket-list spectacle that you will remember forever. Everything is more magical during the golden hour.

If you visit during the middle of the day, you will have to contend with the possibility of the heat from the sun as you hike or explore the area. In the morning it can be cold but not freezing conditions. With a good jacket and pants, you will be okay at the summit.

Time of year: Because Madeira has a temperate climate all year, there is no good or bad time of the year when considering the weather. I visited in late summer and spring and had a mixture of moody weather and great sunny days. The months of September, October, and November are usually much quieter on Madeira so if you want to avoid the crowds then think about a trip during those months.

Type of weather : As mentioned above, you should never be ridiculously cold or hot on Madeira but the midday sun while hiking can get a bit much for some. The morning chill during sunrise viewing is mild enough for most to handle. However, it is the clouds that are the most important part of the experience so try your best to visit when the cloud cover is creating a white layer through the mountains for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY AND FULL MOON PHOTOGRAPHY AT PICO DO ARIEIRO

With very little light pollution this far up in the mountains, Pico do Arieiro is a great place for astrophotography and for witnessing the full moon. One night we set out on a mission to Pico do Arieiro to photograph the full moon as it rose over the peaks on the ridge just near Ninho da Manta viewpoint. We set up about 1.5km down the trail from Pico do Arieiro looking back towards the ridge in an easterly direction.

It was a pretty crazy mission and one that definitely involved some sketchy climbing in the dark but we managed to create an amazing set of images that are pretty unique. It was great to shoot at night out on the trail because all the tourists and hikers are gone so it is incredibly peaceful while you are shooting the stars and the moon.

You will need a tripod for the astrophotography but you can actually shoot the moon handheld just like in the second photo you see below. Good luck and stay safe out there during the night when it’s dark, cold, and a bit scary out in the mountains!

PICO DO ARIEIRO TO PICO RUIVO HIKE

The most well-known hike on the island of Madeira, also referred to as “Pico to Pico,” is from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo (PR1). This tunnel route takes hikers through dark tunnel passages, up and down ominous staircases, and along curvy, rocky trails. It is recommended to arrive at Pico do Arieiro for sunrise before setting out on the hike to Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest point at 1,862 meters. After you return to Pico do Arieiro, you will have gained a vertical kilometer because there is a 550-meter incline both ways.

It is common to find yourself above the clouds as you travel between the peaks because of Madeira’s altitude and its weather patterns, which is an amazing phenomenon. With its steep inclines, this hike is an adrenaline-filled endurance test. This is unquestionably among the world’s top-rated official day hikes, in my opinion. It will be the pinnacle of your trip to Madeira if you are up for the challenge, I guarantee it.

The Hiking Trail of Pico do Arieiro, Madeira

The real showstopper, however, is when the area fills with a thick sea of clouds, creating an almost fantasy-like atmosphere. While you climb above 1,500m (4900 feet), witness the sun breaking through the fog, coloring the pathway – this is a must-see on your Madeira itinerary!

Tip: There are no toilets along the way, so make sure to use the ones at Pico do Arieiro before starting your hike.

Note: There is an observation deck at Pico do Arieiro that many people visit for the view (at Miradouro Juncal). You’ll also notice many tours here during sunrise. However, most are here just to soak up the ocean views; not everyone actually hikes the trail.

This point looks out over the green scenery, with the ocean in the background. It’s only 1.2 kilometers down the trail and is a great place to snap some photos.

Tip: Many people who gather at Miradouro Juncal don’t make it this way, so if you come for sunrise, we personally recommend watching the sunrise from there to skip some crowds.

Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo

Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo are two of the highest peaks in Madeira, with the Ruivo Peak being the highest. The PR1 trail continues from the miradouro over ledges, through tunnels (five in total), and eventually wraps up around the mountain. Most of the trail toward Ruivo is actually downhill, but you’ll have jaw-dropping sights all along the route.

mountain hike madeira

Pass Pedra Rija, an open area and a great spot to stop for a minute, and notice all the flowers lining the trail. You might also spot little red-legged partridges native to Madeira (please don’t feed them).

The tunnels you pass are all relatively short (the longest one is about 150 meters), but it’s recommended to bring a headlamp for these sections. All along the route, you’ll find signs pointing toward the endpoint: Pico Ruivo.

Note: Though challenging, the sections with a steep drop or along mountain ledges always have railings on the side!

How Long is the Pico do Arieiro Hike?

The Pico do Arieiro hike in Madeira typically takes about 3-4 hours if you’re continuously walking. However, it can quickly extend to 5-7 hours if you prefer a more leisurely pace and more stops to sit, relax, and soak up the views over the island and ocean.

sunrise view madeira

As it’s an in-and-out trail, the route doesn’t loop; it goes from peak to peak with significant elevation changes (a total of 900m elevation gain). Depending on your fitness level, this can take some time.

Tip: If you don’t feel like hiking the entire route to Pico Ruivo but still want to witness those incredible views, walk from Pico do Arieiro to the viewpoint ‘Miradouro do Ninho da Manta’ (40 minutes). Here, you have a viewing platform looking over the incredible valleys.

Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo One-way or Round Trip?

Depending on your stamina and how you’ve arranged your transportation, you can choose between a one-way or round-trip hike on the PR1 trail from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo. The round-trip option is more challenging as you’ll have to walk the same route back to the starting point, mostly uphill.

Alternatively, for those seeking a less strenuous option, numerous transfer services are available to drop you off at the trailhead and pick you up from Achadas Teixeira (close to Pico Ruivo). This way, you can do the ‘Pico to Pico’ hike one way.

The Best Time to Hike Pico do Arieiro

This hike is one of the best things to do in Madeira , and it’s very popular to start walking before sunrise. It rarely gets cold in Madeira, with an average temperature of 20 – 25 degrees Celsius year-round. However, remember that temperatures are much lower in the mountains due to their higher elevation. During our visit in April, it was 20 degrees in Funchal and 5 degrees at Pico do Arieiro.

Tip: Wear layers on your hike, as the weather can be unpredictable here. It can be very cold, warm, windy, cloudy, or clear. Therefore, it’s worth checking the Pico do Arieiro webcam or Windy.com to see what the weather is like.

Hiking During Sunrise or Sunset?

The PR1 hike is both stunning at sunrise and sunset, and each has its charm. Watch as the sunrise slowly pops above the horizon, shining through the morning fog that drifts around the mountains. If you want to visit during this time, make sure to arrive at your viewpoint of choice 30 minutes before the sun comes up.

The downside of the sunset hikes is that if you plan on doing an organized tour, this is not an option at the time of writing. Only sunrise tours are offered at this moment.

madeira pr1 hike pico do arieiro to pico ruivo

We did the PR1 hike both at sunrise and sunset. Although both are equally gorgeous, hiking later in the day is slightly more peaceful than early in the morning, with hikers more spread across the trail. We recommend starting about 6 hours before sundown to catch the best soft golden glow if you visit during this time.

How to Get to the Pico do Arieiro Trailhead

Although it’s deemed one of the island’s best hikes, there’s no public transportation to the Pico do Arieiro trailhead. However, you can get there by car, taxi, organized tour , or transfer .

By Car or Taxi

From the capital city, Funchal, it’s about 30-40 minutes of driving to reach the trailhead parking lot. The road up is a beautiful journey, twisting and turning between the mountains. A taxi costs about 40 EUR from the city to Pico do Arieiro.

We recommend to rent a car in Madeira through Sunny Cars with free cancellation and insurance included. Book your rental car here .

Pico do Arieiro has a lower and an upper parking lot. Choose the lower lot if you plan on doing the entire hike, as that’s for day parking. The upper parking lot has a maximum parking time of just one hour.

From the lower parking, walk up to the trailhead (2 minutes) via a little path instead of the road for safety. You’ll notice a wooden sign on the opposite side of the road that reads ‘Pico do Arieiro 800m’.

All parking is free, so come early. When you arrive later in the morning (after 10 AM), chances are higher you’ll have to park further down the road and walk longer.

What to expect

Watching the sunrise from the top of one of Madeira's highest peaks will have you reaching for your camera over and over again. And this exclusive morning trip to Pico do Arieiro promises just that – views over Madeira during the mystical first light of the day, followed by a warming breakfast. Arlindo, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘You may wonder why we plan to get to the peak a while before the sun is due to rise. You'll see when you get there that the best colours light up the sky during the half-hour before the sun appears.'

You'll want to pack warm layers, a hat, gloves and scarf for this morning tour, as the temperature can often be up to 10 degrees lower at the top of Pico do Arieiro than at the coast. We'll set off early, with a pre-dawn pick-up from your hotel – this is to ensure you can reach the top in time to find a good viewpoint for the chance to watch the sun bathe the island of Madeira in golden light. Often, clouds sit below the Pico do Arieiro, making the sunrise views even more magical.

Coffee will be served as you're taking it all in. And there'll be blankets to cosy up and enjoy the moment in the midst of mountains and clouds. Afterwards, you'll head along to a restaurant for a tasty breakfast. Arlindo adds, ‘It can get very cold on the Pico do Arieiro, sometimes it even snows there. My parents used to drive us up here if there was snow at the peak. The local tradition was to build a snowman on the bonnet of the car before driving back down again.'

Red White Adventures

The most famous hike in madeira – pico do arieiro (pr1).

We’ve been fortunate to do some pretty incredible hikes on the island of Madeira. Incredible coastal hikes, Levada trails, and mountain hikes – but if there’s one hike that takes the cake, it’s Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo.

On a clear and sunny day, you’ll have some of the best views on the island including from the top of Pico Arieiro and the famous Pico Ruivo which is the tallest peak on the island.

On this hike, you get to cross some of Madeira’s most beautiful mountains while hiking up to the tallest peaks on the island. This makes Pico do Arieiro the most famous and popular hike in Madeira. You really can’t beat the views.

The Pico do Arieiro trail (or PR1 Madeira as it’s also called) will bring you along ridgelines, through dark tunnels, and up to the highest peaks on the island.

One of the best sunset and sunrise spots in Madeira is even along this hike! *Hint hint* it’s at the top of Pico Ruivo!

What to expect when hiking Pico do Arieiro (PR1 Madeira)

madeira pico do arieiro tour

When you plan to do this hike, you can expect to do a bit of planning before you go. Pico do Arieiro is a one-way trail so before you go, you have to figure out how you’ll get to the trailhead and how you get back once you finish the hike.

We’re here to help so in this post, you can find all the different ways to do it in this post!

On this trail, you can expect a lot of people and guided tours as well. PR 1 Pico do Arieiro is the most famous hiking trail in Madeira so, of course, lots of people do this hike daily.

Thankfully it’s mostly one-way traffic as most people do the hike from Pico Arieiro towards Pico Ruivo but you will also meet people doing it in the opposite direction.

Another thing to take into consideration before you go is that weather plays a big part in the Pico do Arieiro hike.

We were lucky and had one of the clearest days (words from our guide) but we also had friends do the hike on a cloudy day and they barely got to see anything.

It is pretty common for it to be quite cloudy up in the Madeira mountains.

Look at the weather forecast for Pico do Arieiro here and you can also check out the live webcam for Pico do Aireiro here . If the weather is looking a little crappy you can always do one of the many other amazing hikes on the island. We have a few recommendations! 😉

Practical information about hiking the Pico do Arieiro trail

Official trail name: PR1 – Pico do Arieiro – Pico Ruivo Distance: 13.2 km one way / 8.2 miles one way Elevation: Roughly 1180 m / 3871 ft. elevation gain Type: One-way trail Length: 5-6 hours total (with breaks, hiking to Pico Ruivo, and to the last car park) Difficulty: Hard (lots of ascents and descents) Rating: 5/5

Click here to see a map of the beginning of the Pico do Arieiro trail .

Here’s a picture of the beginning of the Pico do Arieiro hike:

madeira pico do arieiro tour

Starting at the PR1 Pico do Arieiro parking lot

The Pico do Arieiro parking lot is the most common starting point for this hike. It’s on the Funchal side of the island and that’s where most guided tours, private shuttles, taxis, and people with their own car start the hike from.

Next to the parking lot, you’ll find a big building where you can buy snacks, use the toilet, and check out the view from Pico do Arieiro. You basically start the hike at the top of one of the three peaks!

Pico do Arieiro is a crazy 1818 meters above sea level which makes it the third tallest peak on the entire island. You can imagine how far up you’ve come already if you’re staying in Funchal which is basically at sea level.

This section of the hike is also the craziest and most touristy since a lot of people do drive up just to see Pico do Arieiro and don’t actually do the trail. So don’t worry, the trail will (hopefully) thin out soon enough!

We found the beginning of the hike to be the coldest and windiest as you’re completely exposed and in the open with no shelter from any other mountains.

You’ll be walking along the ridge between mountains completely exposed on both sides!

Pro tip: Before you start the hike, make sure you use the toilet in the building (it costs €0.50). This will be your only option for a few hours as there are no toilets on the trail and there is no coverage 😉

Continuing towards the second peak, Pico das Torres

madeira pico do arieiro tour

Expect some ascents and descents throughout the hike! You might be thinking the hike is going to be quite easy since the beginning of the trail starts so high up. But the trail is anything from flat the whole way.

During this section towards Pico das Torres you’ll have quite a few staircases (see the first picture above) where you hike down a bunch, then a few minutes after you will run into another staircase where you have to hike back up.

This is why it is a really good idea to bring hiking poles .

Thankfully there are a few viewpoints along the way where you can relax and rest. From one of them, you can even see Porto Santo in the distance on a clear day.

madeira pico do arieiro tour

As you continue, you’ll hike through a few dark tunnels! If you’ve done Levada 25 Fontes before you’ll kinda know what to expect.

The only difference here is that the tunnels are much shorter on Pico do Arieiro but there are 6 of them! The length varies between 80 and 300 meters.

You won’t actually hike up to the top of Pico das Torres but you will walk by and see it. This part is super tough and is basically just a ton of staircases you have to walk up.

The good news is that once you make it past Pico das Torres the hardest part of the hike is out of the way!

This also means you’re one step closer to Pico Ruivo and to an awesome lunch spot.

Continuing towards Casa de Abrigo for lunch

madeira pico do arieiro tour

This is the last stretch before Casa de Abrigo where you can stop, relax, and have a nice lunch break in the sun (hopefully)!

The part from Pico das Torres to Casa de Abrigo is mostly uphill but it isn’t too challenging. You’ve got the hardest part of the hike out of the way and this stretch will feel like a breeze compared to what you’ve already done.

You’ll have a bit of a descent that wraps around a mountain and then one final push to Casa de Abrigo. Along the trail, you’ll notice how the flora and trees change.

This section has a bunch of burnt/dead trees that have turned completely white. It’s quite fascinating, especially with all the crazy mountains and valleys in the background.

You’re never short of spectacular views throughout this hike.

madeira pico do arieiro tour

At last, you’ll see Casa de Abrigo which is the perfect spot to have a nice lunch break. Here you can buy drinks, cake, and little snacks inside.

It is slightly pricier than the rest of the island but it’s because the workers have to carry the food 2.6 km from the Achada do Teixeira parking lot to the cabin on their shoulders multiple times a day every single day!

There are tables, chairs, and toilets so you can have a full-on break and enjoy some food before the last stretch to the top of Pico Ruivo.

Fun fact: You can actually stay in Casa de Abrigo overnight. This is totally worth doing because from there you can catch the most beautiful sunrise in all of Madeira.

The last stretch to the top of Pico Ruivo

madeira pico do arieiro tour

We actually went straight to the top of Pico Ruivo. We knew if we ended up sitting down and eating lunch first we’d get tired and cold and it would make it a lot harder to make it to the top.

Thankfully, the summit of Pico Ruivo is only a 15-minute hike from Casa de Abrigo so we went for it.

As you head up, just follow the signs and stay left. At some part, the trail splits in two. If you head right you end up on a +10km hike away from the peak, so make sure you stay left!

Once you’re at the top you can finally say you’ve made it to the highest peak in Madeira. Pico Ruivo is the highest peak and stands at 1861 meters. Not bad, especially thinking you were at sea level only a few hours ago.

madeira pico do arieiro tour

From Pico Ruivo, you’ll get an epic panoramic view of the whole island. You’ll see the Nuns Valley on one side and Santana on the other on a clear day. You might even be able to see Porto Santo island on a clear day.

The top of Pico Ruivo is also the best sunrise spot in Madeira .

As we mentioned, you can stay at Casa de Abrigo and hike up in the morning for sunrise. It’s hands down one of the coolest (literally and figuratively) things we’ve done in Madeira.

If you get the chance to do it you definitely should!

When you’re done admiring the views, head back down to Casa de Abrigo.

Down to the Pico Ruivo parking lot (Achada do Teixeira)

madeira pico do arieiro tour

If you do the hike with a guided tour, shuttle service, or take a taxi then you’ll finish at the Pico Ruivo parking lot. It’s about a 40-minute walk from Casa de Abrigo down to the car park. It’s mostly downhill and an easy trail back down.

This last section of the hike is actually one of our favourite parts of the whole hike. Every time you look back for a second you look back at these stunning mountains that are so dramatic and extreme.

You can look back and see a portion of the trail you already hiked and how much distance you’ve covered in a small amount of time.

It’s crazy thinking that back in the day, Madeiran people would use the Pico do Arieiro trail to go from one side of the mountain to the other.

Slowly but steadily, you’ll keep descending and descending and then after the last bend, the car park will come to view and you’ll be finished this epic hike! It’s really one for the books.

This hike is a must-do and on a clear sunny day, you’ll see all of Madeira. If you only have time to do one hike while you’re in Madeira it should be Pico do Arieiro.

What to bring on the PR1 Madeira trail

madeira pico do arieiro tour

One of the most important things to bring on Pico do Arieiro is proper clothing. We did the hike on a very sunny day in March and even though it was warm, a lot of the hike was in the shade and quite chilly.

Also, the beginning of the hike near Pico do Arieiro can get quite windy and cold. Then at the end of the hike near Pico Ruivo, you can be totally exposed to the sun and feel like you’re burning.

A few layers of clothes that you can easily take on and off is your best bet for this hike.

It is quite a challenging hike so bring enough water and food. If you by chance forget to pack enough you can always grab something at the shop at the beginning of the hike or at Casa de Abrigo.

  • Water! We always fill up our LifeStraw bottles before hikes and even during them when we can. Make sure to fill it up beforehand. You might be able to refill it at Casa de Abrigo.
  • Multiple layers of clothing and a hat to protect you from the sun.
  • Sunscreen is highly recommended when hiking in Madeira. The second half of the hike is quite exposed to the sun. Even after a few minutes you really start to feel it.
  • A power bank is always nice to have on a hike! You don’t want a dead phone halfway through a hike.
  • Bring some lunch for a nice picnic. We had lunch at Casa de Abrigo and it was great. We also bought a coffee and some cake there too! 🙂
  • If you have weak knees, you might want to bring hiking poles ! The ascents and descents on Pico do Arieiro is brutal and a set of hiking poles will definitely make it a lot easier!
  • Proper hiking shoes . The tunnels get wet and muddy and some of the staircases can be a little slippery as well.

You can check out this great list of hiking gear to get some more inspiration!

Before you hike Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo

Check the weather

No matter where you hike, you should always check the weather before you go. Madeira has a micro-climate so the weather is always changing and can be very different even a few kilometers away.

The whole hike you’re going to be around the highest points of Madeira so you’re definitely going to be exposed to sections of the hike.

Check out the weather near Pico do Arieiro here and the live webcam for Pico do Aireiro here to get an idea of what to pack and expect on your day hike.

Wear hiking shoes

If there’s a hike in Madeira that you’d want proper hiking shoes on , then it’s this one. We wear them on most hikes but especially on this one, it’s nice to have proper footwear.

This isn’t your typical walk-in-the-park Levada trail that you find all over the island. Pico do Arieiro is a real hike and hiking shoes are absolutely recommended for this hike.

It’s long, challenging, muddy in parts. Wearing hiking boots will make your day a lot more enjoyable!

Book your transportation beforehand

If you’re planning to rent a car then do that beforehand, you can rent one through Discover Cars if you want to compare prices and get the best deal.

If you do rent a car you’ll also need to book a taxi (or hitchhike) to take you back to the start of the hike where you parked your car.

There’s also the option of hiking back to your car and doing the hike as an “in-and-out” trail. Just keep in mind that this will add an extra 10 km to the hike. But it will save you the money of taking a taxi back to Pico do Arieiro.

Another option, which we did, was to go on a guided tour.

If you want someone to pick you up beforehand in Funchal, drop you off, do the hike with you, and pick you up after the hike then this is the perfect option.

We did it this way and it worked out very well! (More on this below).

Figuring out how you want to do the hike is the most important part of the whole trip. Especially since there are a few ways to do it. It’s just about what way works best for you.

How to get to Pico do Arieiro

madeira pico do arieiro tour

So unfortunately there is no bus that brings you directly to the trailhead. You can take a bus that will drop you off a few kilometres from the trail but there are other and better options to get to this hike.

Go on a guided tour

madeira pico do arieiro tour

Going on a guided tour is one of the best ways to experience Pico do Aireiro!

We’ve done two guided tours on the island with Lido Tours and they’ve been exceptional. The first time was on Levada 25 Fontes and then on this hike – and we’ve loved both!

The guides are great and we’ve actually met some really nice people on both of the tours as well which is always fun.

For the price (€37) and what you get out of it, it’s totally worth it. The convenience of not having to arrange rides for the hike just makes the whole day more enjoyable.

There are plenty of hikes in Madeira that are easily accessible that you can plan yourself, but Pico do Arieiro is one that’s nice to do on a guided tour!

Getting to Pico do Arieiro by car

One thing to take into consideration if you take your own car is that you will need to take a taxi or a Bolt / Uber back to the trailhead.

This can cost you around €40. OR you will walk back again making the hike twice as long.

Another option which we would probably do if we had rented a car would be to do the majority of the hike by hiking from Pico do Arieiro and up to Pico Ruivo.

Then instead of hiking to the Pico Ruivo parking lot (although this part was beautiful) just turn around there making the hike an in-and-out trail.

It would add an extra few hours to the hike since you’d just have to hike the exact distance you’ve already done. This way you get to enjoy the mountains and not have to worry and pay for a ride back to your car!

Below you can find the distances and time frames between Funchal and Pico do Arieiro as well as Ponta do Sol to Pico do Arieiro.

From Funchal to start of Vereda do Pico do Arieiro:

  • 35-minute drive (20 kilometers)
  • You can follow the directions from Funchal to Pico do Arieiro here .

From Ponta do Sol to Vereda do Fanal trail:

  • 60-minute drive (40 kilometers)
  • You can follow the directions from Ponta do Sol to Pico do Arieiro here .

Renting a car in Madeira

If you do book a car it’s best to book it in advance (if you can) and pick up the car at the Madeira airport if you’re keeping the car for a while.

This is definitely the cheapest option.  You can look on  DiscoverCars   to find the best deals and compare prices.

Prices do change all the time based on supply and demand so if you really know you’ll be driving a lot and exploring the island it’s best to book your car in advance.

Picture of a car rental from Madeira Airport in Portugal.

Pico Transfer shared shuttle

Pico do Arieiro is so popular that there are companies that run shuttles up and down every day.

If you want to do the hike by yourself and want the cheapest and most convenient way to get to the trailhead AND get picked up later in the day then go with Pico Transfer .

They have a few pickup spots in Funchal and then they drop you back off in Funchal later in the day for the total price of €30-33.

This is a great way to actually be able to do the hike by yourself without having to worry about transport.

We haven’t actually used the shuttle service since we did the hike with Lido Tours but Pico Transfers is a reliable company on the island and plenty of hikers have used them before.

Taking the bus near Pico do Arieiro

This is by far the cheapest and most affordable way to get anywhere near Pico do Arieiro but we only recommend it if you are in really good shape and want to save money.

You can take the N56 bus to Poiso which is about 2 km from the beginning of the hike.

If you are lucky, you can probably hitchhike on that road since everyone is going to Pico do Arieiro – or maybe a taxi that drives by will pick you up and it will only be a few Euros.

It’s a bit of a hassle and you have to make sure to make it to the bus, then get to the trailhead and do the full hike (return) but if you’re up for the adventure and want to save some money it is doable!

It will definitely save you a bunch of money doing it this way if you’re on a tight budget!

You can then either do the hike as an in-and-out trail and get a solid 24 km in your legs or you can do it one way and then try to get a ride to Santana from the Pico Ruivo parking lot (Achada do Teixeira).

Best time to hike Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo

madeira pico do arieiro tour

If you’re already in Madeira, we recommend you try and go on a weekday as it will be a lot less busy.

If you aren’t in Madeira just yet and are planning to go, we highly recommend visiting Madeira and doing this hike during one of the shoulder seasons (spring or late fall).

Pico do Arieiro is PR1 (meaning recommended trail 1) and one of the busiest hikes on the whole island.

It makes sense since this hike is absolutely incredible but sometimes you get families, guided tours, walking groups, and influencers all at the same time.

So you can imagine the trail can get crowded quite quickly. Especially since there are certain sections of the hike that you can’t really pass on.

So if you get the chance try and plan to go in the middle of the week during shoulder season and you’ll see the trail to be a lot quieter.

Another thing to take into consideration when planning to hike Pico do Arieiro is that weather can play a big part in the hike. Try to do the hike on a warm sunny day with little wind.

Up in the mountains, it can get windy and cloudy and then a lot of the incredible views will be hidden! (Although sometimes this also results in cloud inversion)!

Our tour guide actually said May is a great month for hiking in Madeira. It’s not too crowded with tourists and the weather is quite good for the most part!

There is also a Saturday in April every year that is quite fun to do the hike on although it will be very crowded.

This is the day of the Madeira Ultra Run ( Madeira Island Ultra-Trail ) where thousands of people run 115 km in one stretch in the Madeiran mountains.

As a part of the trail, they go from Pico Ruivo to Pico do Aireiro so you will get to cheer them on along the way. It’s absolutely crazy and supposedly a very cool thing to see!

Questions related to Pico do Arieiro

How long does it take to hike pico do arieiro.

To hike the whole PR 1 Pico do Arieiro trail we would say roughly 5-6 hours. The PR 1 is just over 13kms long, so with a few breaks it should be doable in 5-6 hours.

If you’re looking at just getting to the top of Pico do Arieiro then it’s about 10 seconds! The parking lot is right next to the viewpoint and you don’t have to walk far at all to get amazing views.

It’s quite common for tourists to just drive up, get out, take in the views, and go back down.

If you’re a hiker or just

Where does Pico do Arieiro hike start?

The actual PR1 Pico do Arieiro hike starts from the actual peak of Arieiro.

Unlike most hikes where you start at the bottom and have to hike to the peak the PR1 you start at the top and then hike across mountains to Pico Ruivo before hiking down to the Pico Ruivo parking lot.

You’ll see a big sign with “PR1 Pico Ruivo” at the parking lot and that’s where the hike starts! It’s quite cool to start a hike already so far up in the mountains.

How hard is Pico Arieiro?

The Pico Ruivo hike is definitely no walk in the park. Unlike most levada trails on the island of Madeira that are pretty flat, Pico Arieiro has a ton of elevation gain.

Even though you start at Pico Ruivo there’s a ton of descents and ascents so it really isn’t just a flat walk across mountains.

There are tons of staircases you have to hike up and down. You add all that over a stretch of 13 kms and the Madeira heat and you got yourself a fairly challenging hike.

With all that being said Pico Arieiro is an extremely fun hike even though it’s a little challenging.

Pico Ruivo can also be hard for people who are afraid of heights though because of the drops on both sides of the trail. We’re not trying to scare you but more prepare you for it that’s all. You’ll have a blast hiking this one!

Can you drive to Pico do Arieiro?

Yes, you can drive to Pico do Arieiro! The parking lot is literally right next to the peak and right next to the restaurant and shop that are at Pico Arieiro.

You really don’t have to go far from the parking lot to this specific viewpoint.

How much is a taxi from Funchal to Pico do Arieiro?

You can take a taxi from Funchal to Pico do Arieiro for about €20. If there are a few of you splitting the fee then it really isn’t that expensive.

If you’re travelling by yourself then the best option for a taxi from Funchal to Pico do Arieiro is by PicoTranfers . It’s the cheapest way to get to and from the hike if you’re travelling alone.

Pico do Arieiro mountain, Madeira

The Pico do Arieiro is the third highest peak on Madeira, and is the most accessible mountainous location from Funchal. Pico do Arieiro lies within the dramatic mountain scenery of the interior of Madeira. Here jagged peaks rise from lush forested valleys, and the strong winds form clouds on the upward gusts.

If you come to Pico do Arieiro on a clear day the views are spectacular, and on certain cloudy days, the peaks rise above a sea of cloud. The Miradouro do Juncal viewpoint (to the east of Arieiro), is the best location on Madeira to watch the sunrise, while the Miradouro do Ninho da Manta provides stunning views over the deep chiselled valleys.

Pico do Arieiro Miradouro do Juncal

The view from the Miradouro do Juncal over the east of the island

Beginning at Pico do Arieiro is the PR1, the finest mountain hiking trail of Madeira, which after 4 challenging hours of hiking leads to the Pico Ruivo the highest point of Madeira.

The Pico do Arieiro is the most accessible of Madeira’s mountain peaks as a decent road (the ER202) leads directly up to the summit, and this makes it popular with day-trippers and coach tours. At the summit are cafes, souvenir shops and a NATO radar installation (the reason for the good road).

As the Pico do Arieiro offers many areas to wander, it is very easy to escape the tourist masses and discover some tranquil vantage point with inspirational mountain views.

Pico do Arieiro is also a fantastic location to watch the sunrise, as it offers uninterrupted views over the eastern side of the island and is relatively safe to drive to in the pre-dawn light. In summary, if you want a trip to the mountains in Madeira, then Pico do Arieiro is the place to visit. Related articles: Introduction to Madeira – Madeira top 10 - 1 week in Madeira

Tourist information about the Pico do Arieiro

The peak at Pico do Arieiro stands at 1,818m, and is part of three east-west mountain ridges that line the eastern interior of Madeira. Pico do Arieiro is 9km north of Funchal, but the twisting mountain roads add a further 10km to the route (19km, a 30 minute drive).

Once at the top of the mountain is a large free car park, but this rapidly fills during the peak hours when the tour buses arrive. Insight: If you have your own car it is always advisable to visit outside of the peak hours (10am-2pm), when the whole site will be more calm and tranquil.

Pico do Arieiro coach tours

At the peak hours there will be many coach tours. In the photo, the hill to the rear is the Miradouro do Juncal

The tourist facilities at the top of the mountain are good and include two cafes (Retiro da Freira and Cafeteria Pico Arieiro) which only should be used for drinks or light snacks. There are clean paid toilets (€1) along with a sensible priced souvenir shop. Mobility access: At the site, there is disabled parking, and it is flat to the cafés and shops, but the paths around the rest of the mountain are cobbled or dirt tracks.

Advice: When visiting the mountains always bring something warm, as even in the summer there can be strong chilly winds.

There are many great tours to Pico Arieiro, and some of the best provided by Getyourguide include: • Guided 8-hour hike from Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo (€38.50) • Jeep Tour up to Pico Arieiro, a half day tour (€35) • Pico Arieiro and Nun´s Valley, a full day tour (€39)

The summit marker for Pico do Arieiro is a bit disappointing and right next to the radar dome facility

On arrival, most visitors head eastwards pasts the radar dome to the Miradouro do Juncal viewpoint. If you visit Arieiro as part of an organised tour or with limited time, this is the best viewpoint to head to. From the Juncal viewpoint, there are wonderful views over the mountains and dense forests, and on a clear day it is possible to see the Ponta de São Lourenço headland.

Miradouro do Juncal

The view from the Miradouro do Juncal

If you have longer at Arieiro, hike the first 500m of the PR1 north-west from the cafes and to the Miradouro do Ninho da Manta viewpoint. This section of the PR1 follows a steep ridge with dramatic (and scary) drops on either side of the path.

The 30-minute walk leads to the Miradouro do Ninho da Manta (Buzzard's nest viewpoint) with its stunning views over the Ribeira da Fajã da Nogueira valley.

Warning: If planning any hiking in the mountains always be suitably prepared (clothes, footwear drinks and food). The weather can rapidly change, as the strong moisture-laden winds can form dense cloud within minutes, changing hot hiking weather into a cold and wet experience. If you plan a long hike, always check the weather before departing.

The PR1 Vereda do Arieiro (Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo)

The PR1 extends from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, is the best mountain hike of Madeira, but it is demanding due to the number of steps to climb.

The route starts at the Pico do Arieiro, heads north along the Ninho da Manta ridge, skirts around the Pico das Torres (1,851m) pass through five tunnels and then climbs lots of stairs to join the PR1.2 close to the summit of Pico Ruivo. The entire route takes 4-5hours and is 15km.

When heading from Pico do Arieiro the first ¾ of the route is downhill or flat, but the real demanding section is the metal stairs which climb the Pico das Torres. This is 20 minutes of continuous stair climbing, and is tough on knees…

Insight: The return leg is mainly mostly uphill with a very steep climb on the final section to Pico do Arieiro. The return (Ruivo to Arieiro) is much more demanding than the “going” section, and is why most tours suggest a route of Arieiro to Ruivo and a pickup at Achada do Teixeira.

Just before the tunnels, the PR1 used to divide offering two paths, with a shorter route going through the tunnels and up the stairs, and a second meandering eastern route which scaled the side of Pico das Torres. The east route is currently closed due to landslides (it has been shut for over 3 years so should be considered permanently shut). This is a shame as the footpath was cut directly into the cliffside and had fewer stairs to contend with.

The PR1 has some very high ridge walks with very severe drops on either side. The path is safe with cable rails, but is not suitable if you suffer from vertigo or there are strong winds.

4x4 Sunset Tour

Ideal for romantic couples and photographers

Quick Details

  • Hour Glass Duration: 4 hours

Get Pico Do Areeiro all to yourself!

Our number one sunset viewing spot is Pico do Areeiro, the third-highest peak on the island. This is a fantastic opportunity to explore the third highest peak of Madeira without the big crowds of the morning and early afternoon tour groups. For photography, the sunset provides the best light of the day, perfect for capturing the romantic and family moments.

The peak comes alive at dusk. The colours are like something of a dream, and even the air is different. Watching the sunset above the clouds is a truly unique experience!

We have a few alternatives for bad weather; thankfully we have been graced with many epic sunset spots in Madeira.

It’s an adventure from start to finish, on the way to the peaks we drive adventurous roads up through the villages of Santa Cruz and Santo Antonio da Serra. We see a small waterfall, we stop for poncha, we drive through the forrest, all as we make our way up to Pico Do Areeiro for sunset.

On our way back down into the city, we see the lights of Funchal from up above, almost as if we were in an airplane! We’ll stop for more poncha or drop you off at a restaurant of your choice after the tour is finished 😉

A fun-filled, adventurous way to spend an evening in Madeira!

I visited the island that's been called the 'Hawaii of Europe.' Here's why it's a must-see hidden gem.

  • I visited Madeira, Portugal, which is often referred to as the " Hawaii of Europe."
  • Madeira offers a mild climate all year, rugged coastlines, and a bustling city center.
  • I recommend checking out places like Monte Palace and the Cabo Girão skywalk.

Insider Today

When I visited Madeira, Portugal , I found an island paradise brimming with natural wonders and cultural opportunities.

From outdoor adventures to trips to the enchanting Funchal city center, this Portuguese hidden gem has sparked comparisons to Hawaii due to the island's striking volcanic features, black-sand beaches, and towering peaks.

Madeira is the perfect blend of a tropical and European vacation, coupled with its yearlong mild climate, rugged coastlines, cascading waterfalls, and verdant cliffs.

With visitation at an all-time high , there's never been a better time to explore Portugal. Here are seven things you have to do while in Madeira.

Get a taste of outdoor adventure while hiking.

madeira pico do arieiro tour

The view from the Pico do Arieiro mountaintop left me speechless.

You can truly appreciate Madeira's diverse landscapes from up there: jagged peaks, verdant valleys, and the endless expanse of the Atlantic Ocean stretching out before you.

I opted for a car ride to the top, but if you plan to hike, I recommend heading to the Vereda dos Balcões trail or the challenging but rewarding Levada do Caldeirão Verde.

When you need a break from hiking, catch a ride on the Funchal cable cars.

madeira pico do arieiro tour

Located in the city center, the Funchal cable cars offer spectacular views as they ascend from Funchal to the charming village of Monte. It's perfect if you're traveling with family, including kids or elders.

Once in Monte, you can visit one of the island's main attractions, Monte Palace.

Monte Palace is the best botanical garden I’ve ever been to.

madeira pico do arieiro tour

Monte Palace houses a huge collection of exotic plants from all over the world. The tropical gardens are also home to gorgeous birds like swans, flamingos, peacocks, and chickens.

From its beautiful gardens to its collection of ceramic tiles and precious gemstones, this place feels like a hidden oasis in the midst of the city.

If you're looking for an adrenaline rush, check out the Cabo Girão skywalk.

madeira pico do arieiro tour

If there's something I love as much as the outdoors, it's a unique experience . So when I heard of Cabo Girão, the highest sea cliff in Europe , I knew I had to visit.

The top of the cliff features a unique glass-floored skywalk suspended over 1,900 feet above sea level. When standing on the glass, I got unmatched views of Madeira's rugged coastline and the crashing waves underneath.

When in Madeira, skip the beer and stick to its famous wine.

madeira pico do arieiro tour

In addition to being the name of the name of the island, Madeira is also a type of fortified wine. Needless to say, you can't leave without visiting a vineyard to learn more about the island's winemaking heritage.

I highly recommend booking a guided tour with a tasting to see the grapes firsthand and gain insights into the intricate aging process that gives these wines unique flavors.

Take a trip to the local market.

madeira pico do arieiro tour

Whenever I visit a new city or country, I like to stop at the local farmers market . In Madeira, I visited the Mercado dos Lavradores, which is located in the heart of Funchal.

It was a great opportunity to sample local delicacies while buying souvenirs from local craftsmen.

For a glimpse into everyday life, don’t skip a visit to the Camara da Lobos fishing village.

madeira pico do arieiro tour

Away from the city center and less frequented by tourists , the picturesque fishing village of Camara da Lobos offers a slice of authentic island life.

Grab a poncha, a local Madeira cocktail, and admire the dozens of art murals that surround the community, all while enjoying the colorful harbor and fishermen unloading their catch of the day.

1. Explore Funchal, the Capital of Madeira

Funchal, the capital city of Madeira, is not only one of the most popular tourist destinations in Madeira but also in all of Portugal. Famous for being a beautiful and vibrant city, Funchal’s location overlooking the Atlantic makes it even more charming.

Beyond the incredible views of the bay, the historic centre is home to iconic historical buildings such as the Cathedral, whose construction began in 1492 by order of King Manuel I of Portugal. Another interesting monument is the Fort of São Tiago, which stands out for its yellow façade. This bright building was erected to defend the city from attacks by pirates and currently houses the Museum of Contemporary Art.

For those who love a good city break, Funchal will not disappoint! If you want to see the city’s main monuments and tourist attractions, one of the best ways to do so is by taking the Funchal Hop-On Hop-Off sightseeing bus .

2. Visit the Madeira Botanical Garden

If you have green fingers, Madeira’s Botanical Garden is sure to blow you away! Spanning over an area of approximately eight hectares, of which five are landscaped, the garden is home to a wide variety of tree species and ornamental shrubs, a beautiful section with orchids, well-groomed lawns, and viewpoints with unparalleled views of Madeira’s capital.

Located just outside of Funchal, The Madeira Botanical Garden is a must-see during your time on the island. We recommend taking plenty of time to walk around and admire its beauty—with over 2000 exotic plants, you could spend hours there!

3. Enjoy a Boat Cruise of Funchal

Funchal’s coastline is one of the most popular in Madeira for boat trips thanks to its rugged coastline which provides spectacular views. Imagine skirting the coastline and admiring the different villages on the shore while relaxing on a boat… If this tickles your fancy, we recommend booking our Funchal Bays Cruise .

An aerial view of Funchal's coastline with several boats in the bay under a blue sky with some clouds.

However, if you’re looking for something a bit more historical, why not sail on an exact replica of the ship that took Christopher Columbus to the New World? You’ll feel like a discoverer onboard this boat trip on the Santa Maria caravel !

4. Visit the CR7 Museum

If you’re a football fanatic, this could be the whole reason you’re visiting Madeira! It’s no secret that Cristiano Ronaldo hails from Funchal, where he was born on February 5th 1985. This true king of sport, proud of his roots, set up an official exhibition narrating the tale of his famous career. The Cristiano Ronaldo Museum houses trophies and memorabilia of the Portuguese player, as well as a life-size wax statue.

With everything from photographs, videos and interactive content, football fans flock to this museum to relive the best moments of Cristiano Ronaldo’s career in the different clubs he’s played for, such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, Andorinha or Sporting.

If you want to see it all for yourself, why not book our Madeira Tour + Cristiano Ronaldo Museum ? As well as visiting the museum, you’ll get to take a guided tour through the city’s historic centre.

5. Stroll around Monte Palace Gardens

Another place in Madeira that you should add to your list is Monte, which you can travel to via cable car from Funchal. While there, you simply cannot miss a visit to Monte Palace Gardens. With more than 100,000 species of plants spread over 70,000 square metres (75,000 square feet) of green spaces, lakes, ponds and waterfalls, the tropical gardens of Monte Palace are a sight to behold.

A view of the Monte Palace Gardens, with a pond surrounded by green trees and people walking along the paths on a sunny day.

This space, located on a hill near Funchal, dates back to the 18th century when an English consul acquired the land. In 1897, the estate’s new owner decided to build a palatial residence, which today is the Monte Palace Hotel. The environment surrounding this building has become increasingly lush, creating a truly idyllic setting. Not only can you find plants from all over the world, but also swans, Asian carp and peacocks.

6. Take a Ride on the Monte Sledges

As well as being a charming place to visit and full of history, the one thing you have to do in Monte is take part in its peculiar tradition: descending the hills in a wicker basket.

Carreiros pushing wicker basket sledges a sloping street in Monte.

This unusual means of transport has become one of the most entertaining tourist attractions on the island. It basically consists of a dizzying descent down the steep streets from Monte to Funchal. The baskets are pushed by carreiros , dressed in traditional straw hats. The thrilling two-kilometre (1.2-mile) journey takes about 10 minutes—we highly recommend it!

7. Hike Through the Levadas

Madeira Island has an extensive and intricate system of water channels known as levadas , which span over 1,400 kilometres (869 miles) of the island. The first ones which date back to the 16th century, came after the appearance of the first settlements on the island, and were used to transport water to the sugar cane fields and later to the vineyards.

However, over the years, Madeira’s levada walks have become a major attraction. These walks follow the passage of these aqueducts through plantations and laurel forests. Nowadays, hikers come from far and wide to experience the lush vegetation, waterfalls and tranquillity along the routes.

A view of a levada running around a mountain with a village of white houses in the valley on a sunny day.

There are routes for all types of travellers, from the simplest, around 3 kilometres (1.8 miles), such as the Balcoes , to others that can be as long as 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), such as the Caldeirao Verde . If you’re an avid hiker, you should join this 5-hour-long hike through the levadas .

8. Visit Cabo Girão, One of The Best Viewpoints in Madeira

At a height of 580 metres (1,902 feet), Cabo Girão is the highest promontory in Europe. As we’re sure you can guess, you’ll be able to admire jaw-dropping views of the Atlantic Ocean with the towns of Câmara de Lobos and Funchal in the background. In addition, the viewpoint has a glass floor walkway with a plunging view of the sea—not suitable for those afraid of heights!

An aerial view of people standing at the Cabo Girão Viewpoint with bright blue water underneath.

You can also make out the faja do Rancho , the remains of ancient volcanic eruptions—today, you can see small cultivated areas at the foot of the cliff. Its fame among tourists has made it one of the most photographed spots in the archipelago. A great way to explore this area is by booking this tour to Cape Girão from Funchal .

9. Discover the Valley of the Nuns

The Curral das Freiras, or the Valley of the Nuns, is one of the most breathtaking places in Madeira. Considered one of the most impressive valleys on the island, this town of white houses is located in an extinct crater and offers splendid panoramic views of Funchal and the surrounding mountains.

Its curious name comes from the 16th century when the Poor Clares sought refuge in this inland area of the island. Their choice of location was strategic—they were fleeing pirate attacks, and the rugged terrain of the mountains meant that their hiding place was impossible to spot from the sea.

Vista aérea del municipio de Curral das Freiras en medio de un cráter extinto

While in the area, it’s definitely worth paying a visit to the Eira do Serrado viewpoint, which you can see on this excursion to the Valley of the Nuns .

10. Visit Santana’s Traditional Triangular Houses

Santana is a municipality located in the north of Madeira that has been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It’s famous for its characteristic traditional thatched houses known as palhoças . Their well-preserved state has much to do with the inaccessibility of the terrain. For centuries, access to this area by both land and sea was extremely difficult, which is why its traditional spirit has stood the test of time.

Casas típicas de forma triangular y techo de paja de Santana

The triangular-shaped houses and coloured doors and windows make Santana look like a fairytale village. What’s more, they are completely free to visit, as many are now shops. Alternatively, if you’re also looking for a bit of adventure, why not visit them on this Santana & Machico 4×4 Day Trip ?

11. Go Scuba Diving in Garajauat

For diving enthusiasts, scuba diving in Garajau Partial Marine Reserve should be at the top of your list of things to do in Madeira. This protected area is home to a huge abundance of marine life such as turtles, groupers, dolphins and manta rays.

A man scuba diving next to a huge brown fish at the seabed.

The crystal clear waters of the reserve allow you to admire its great biodiversity, even at 20 metres (65 feet) down! If you have no experience in scuba diving, you can experience it for the first time by booking this beginner’s scuba diving activity in Garajau .

12. Take a Dip in the Natural Pools at Porto Moniz

If you’re more of a paddler than a scuba diver, a trip to the town of Porto Moniz could be on the cards. Located on the north coast of Madeira, it’s best known for its natural pools of volcanic origin. These pools attract a multitude of tourists who come to bathe in a truly unique environment—the ideal place for a morning or afternoon of relaxation. If this is up your alley, you’ll love this Northern Madeira 4×4 and Porto Muniz Pools Tour .

Acantilados y piscinas naturales de Porto Moniz frente a un grupo de montañas verdes de Madeira

Continuing west from Porto Moniz, you’ll reach the village of Seixal, which also has its own natural pools and black sand beaches, or the magnificent Velo da Novia waterfall. This waterfall, which falls directly into the Atlantic from a high cliff, is very popular with visitors to the north-west coast of Madeira—its viewpoint is a hidden gem!

13. See the Sunrise from Pico do Arieiro

The third-highest peak in Madeira, Pico do Arieiro is a perfect place for hiking and enjoying panoramic views of the island. It measures a total of 1818 metres (5,964 feet) and, on a clear day, is an amazing place to watch the sunrise or sunset over the island.

Escaleras subiendo al Pico do Arieiro, una montaña de Madeira de gran altura

On the plus side, if you rent a car, you can enjoy this viewpoint without a long hike as the car park is just five minutes away from the top—it’s only 40 minutes from Funchal! However, reaching the top of the peak requires some effort as the final stretch on foot is quite steep. If you don’t have your own vehicle, you can book our Pico do Arieiro and Ruivo sunrise hike . Ideal for exploring these beautiful corners of the island!

14. Taste Typical Portuguese Food

We may or may not have saved the best for last… If you’re a foodie, this is for you! Portuguese cuisine is known for its traditional spirit and homely flavour. Two characteristics that are enhanced in Madeira thanks to the abundance of exquisite fresh Atlantic products. Although fish and seafood are among the typical dishes to eat in Madeira, there’s no shortage of mouth-watering meat dishes on the island.

We highly recommend trying lapas grelhadas , or grilled limpets, as an appetizer, accompanied by bolo do caco , a bread made with potato and spread with garlic butter. Another recommendation is the island’s most famous stew, caldeirada de pescado (fish stew). If you’re more of a meat lover, you can opt for an espetada madeirense , a beef-based skewer.

Un playo repleto de lapas a la parrilla acompañadas por dos rodajas de limón, un plato muy típico de Madeira

If you want to learn more about the island’s gastronomic richness, why not book a trip to the Santo da Serra market ? Or, if you’d prefer to learn about the island’s viticulture, you can’t miss this winery tour with a tasting of local wines .

No matter what type of trip you’re looking for, Madeira has something for everyone! If you’re still not sure about what activity to do during your visit, why not check out all of the activities offered by Civitatis in Madeira ?

Thoughts on my tentative outline for my 5 days at the end of this month?

Friday - Funchal - walk to take cable car up to Monte and then go to botanical gardens. To get back down take the sleigh (I think it’s 30 euros for a single person - singles always get screwed) - do they take CC or just cash? Do you tip at end? walk around old town (anything flower festival left for me to absolutely see?)

Saturday - Go West all day tour with Madeira Hapoy Tours? https://www.madeirahappytours.com/tour/go-west-island-tour/

Or this tour?

https://www.viator.com/search/125569P1?mcid=64243

Sunday - I was told from another site that I can pay a taxi to take me to Pico de Arierio (and wait?) to see the sunrise and then take me back to FNC or is there an morning tour? or a better way? Is there another way back to FNC from Pico so the taxi doesn’t wait? I’m a little confused.

Depending on what time I get back was thinking of either the 3 hour 10:30 dolphin/whale catamaran or rest up on my hotel roof pool for a while and do the 3:30 whale/dolphin catamaran (also, is it dolphin season? I’ve done whale watching before)

Monday - East all day tour with either Bearded Tours https://beardedmadeiratours.com/products/east-tour-madeira OR with Happy Tours https://www.madeirahappytours.com/tour/go-east-island-tour/

Tuesday - last full day. Do I sign up for some Levada walk? Which one? I know there are waterfalls to visit.. or do I walk down along the water and towards the Lido area?

I didn’t due my due diligence on how much there was to do and I realize now I should have added 2 more days to my trip to not be as rushed as it seems I am.. hence why I am struggling. I usually don’t like to be go go all the time. Help!

madeira pico do arieiro tour

It's a good itinerary which includes a lot of great stuff. If you're OK to be flexible, then I would recommend holding on finalising bookings until you're on the island or at least close to arrival. Although late May is good for weather generally, it makes a difference to the Pico do Arieiro trip if there is cloud cover high up - better on a day it's pretty sure to be clear.

Prioritising those two things and then fitting everything else in around would be the way I'd go, but if you're feeling lucky, then it's kind of OK to be adventurous and chance it at this time of year, too.

I'll help with filling in some of the details to your other questions, but let contributors here respond first as many have more experience of specific tours.

Whichever way you choose, have a great visit to Madeira .

Although the big parade was last Sunday, there are still lots of flower festival things ongoing. Your choice of hotel and excellent location means that just by stepping out between Sé (cathedral) and the municipal gardens, you'll encounter things still happening. And a stroll along the wide open part of the ocean front close by might offer a flowery surprise or two as well.

It could well be the case that some of the tours take in other festivities going on around the island, but I can't speak to that from personal experience.

Just a couple of comments on your trip:

The Botanical Gardens aren’t at Monte - you are thinking of the Monte Tropical Gardens.

Then get the bus from outside the entrance to the BG back to Funchal - it’s a great bus ride and costs less than 2 euros. Far better than the toboggan / sleigh ride which is very tame and dumps you only halfway down the hill.

And yes you will be pressured to give a tip after the toboggan ride. And to buy a photo of yourself. And to take a rip off taxi ride back to Funchal .

Enjoy your holiday - sounds like you are packing plenty in.

I’m not aware of such a bus.

If you are determined to do the sleigh ride, I would do the Botanical Gardens another day (if you wish).

You can walk from the end of the sleigh ride to Funchal (we did it after walking down the sleigh ride route). It’s a steep downhill walk so wear sensible shoes. The route is easy - just keep pointing downhill. I think from memory it took about 30 - 40 minutes.

Steve-…. That is perfect!!! Combining everything! Thank you!
