Daryl Hall

“Say It Isn’t So” isn’t just the name of a classic Hall & Oates song — it’s the much-headlined reaction to the news that the duo that practically defines duos had a nasty and seemingly final split last year. The two, who began singing and performing together more than 50 years ago over a mutual love of soul and doo-wop music, were almost impossible to imagine without each other — even more than Simon without Garfunkel or George Michael without Andrew Ridgeley, this was more like a final split between peanut butter and jelly. It’s actually hard to imagine.

Popular on Variety

He continues, “I haven’t had a creative relationship with John for at least 25 years. We didn’t write songs together, we didn’t do anything together except perform live shows. We had an arrangement that I couldn’t play my solo songs onstage with Hall & Oates — and now I get to.”

And that’s exactly what Hall, who was always the primary songwriter in the duo, plans to do with his forthcoming sixth solo album, which reunites him with longtime collaborator and fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Dave Stewart, who produced Hall’s second solo album, “Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine,” in 1986.

Out on June 21, “D” is a reminder that Hall is one of the most talented singer-songwriters of the past half century. The first single, “Can’t Say No to You” (out today) epitomizes the sweet, street-corner Philly soul that has characterized Daryl Hall ’s music from the start of his career. Other influences appear on the album, like the Beatlesque “The Whole World’s Better,” which starts with a live audience cheering like at the start of “Sgt. Pepper,” and itself echoes that abum’s song “Getting Better.”

“I wasn’t thinking about that when I wrote it, but I totally agree with you — those clanging chords in the intro,” he says. “It was Dave’s idea to put in the crowd noise. Whatever comes out of my brain are these licks that I’ve learned in my childhood. It’s the basis of my style, my musical DNA.”

And while it might be tempting to think titles like “Rather Be a Fool,” “Not the Way I Thought It Was” and the Sly-styled Philly funk of “Why You Want to Do That to My Head” refer to the split with his former partner, Hall insists it was the furthest thing from his mind.

“These songs couldn’t be less about that,” he insisted. “I had a particularly rocky time over the past 10 years, especially over the last five with romantic relationships, and it’s also about my reactions to all the fucked-up things that are going on around me. But,” he stresses, “I never emotionally cared about Hall & Oates enough to write songs like this.”

A famously private person, Hall was divorced in 2015 from his British wife Armanda Aspinall, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 61. In “Rather Be a Fool,” he sings, “How could something be so right/ And go so wrong overnight?”

“I wrote that song in the midst of my divorce, and it was about exactly what was happening to me and my wife at the time,” he explains. “It’s very dramatic because I was writing in the middle of all this turmoil. At the end of the song, when I sang that line, it was just to see if the lyrics worked, but we kept the first take. Most of the vocals on the album were like that.”

Hall’s career renaissance began in the ‘00s, not coincidentally after he and Oates began working with Jonathan Wolfson, who took over managing the duo in 2009 after serving as their publicist for the five years before that. Hall’s ongoing web series, “Live from Daryl’s House,” which bowed in November 2007 and returned after a five-year absence last year with episodes featuring Robert Fripp, Andy Grammer, Lisa Loeb and Howard Jones.

Speaking of unexpected collaborations, Hall embarks on another solo tour, this one with Elvis Costello — with whom he duetted some 40 years ago on Costello’s “The Only Flame in Town” — starting June 2 in Troutdale, Oregon, with dates scheduled for the Greek Theater in Los Angeles on June 18, the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas on June 23 and New York’s Radio City Music Hall on July 16.

A new album, an exciting tour with an old friend, a relaunch of his beloved web series — it all would seem to add up to a fresh start for Daryl Hall. But maybe not.

“I wish I could say yes, but no, nothing’s really been resolved,” he sighs. “There’s always a weight on my mind. Every good thing that happens to me, something bad happens. I’ve accepted that. All I can say is, I’m very proud of this album. I got things off my chest, and I’m ready to get out there and sing for people.”

Hall and Oates Confirm Rescheduled 2021 Tour Dates

Hall & Oates confirmed their upcoming 2021 tour schedule, rerouting the remaining dates that were previously postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The band's North American trek is currently scheduled to kick off April 17 in Indio, Calif., and continues April 23 in Honolulu; April 25 in Kahului, Hawaii; and May 21 and 22 in Mashantucket, Ct. Their stint  featuring openers Squeeze and KT Tunstall commences Aug. 5 in Mansfield, Mass., and wraps Oct. 5 in Mountain View, Calif. The band's Oct. 7 stop in Portland, Ore., features only Tunstall.

You can see the dates below. Full ticket info is available at the band's website .

John Oates dismissed two popular touring strategies in a 2020 Rolling Stone interview, saying he doesn't like the idea of full-album or "farewell" runs. "I don't think we'd ever do a farewell tour," he said. "Every farewell tour I've ever heard about didn't turn out to be a farewell tour, so I don't know what the hell that means. Sure, if it's a marketing ploy, hey, why not? Everyone needs a hook. Everyone need a shtick. Whatever."

In that same interview, the guitarist noted that Hall & Oates had entered the "early, preliminary days" of a new LP, with Daryl Hall working in Europe with "some young producers he'd getting kind of energized with."

Hall then followed up on that comment in April with UCR, saying he'd worked on seven songs with Dutch producer Jett Rebel, whom he'd met while in Holland playing a festival.

"He literally just came up to me and said, 'Hey, man, I’m a giant fan of yours,' and we just started talking," Hall said. "He gave me a CD of himself, and I went back and went online and listened to what he was doing, and I went, 'This guy is really good.' I started contacting him and we had email conversations."

Hall also noted that he's been "channeling himself" on his latest music: "I think of my own catalog and my own songs, and that can go a lot of different directions."

Hall & Oates & Squeeze Confirm Rescheduled Tour Dates

Daryl Hall and John Oates have rolled out their rescheduled itinerary including their summer and fall run with Squeeze and special guest KT Tunstall . As it stands now, Hall & Oates will open up their year on their own with a smattering of shows on their own, kicking things off on April 17th in Indio, California.

The joint Squeeze dates begin on August 5th in Mansfield, Massachusetts, with the 24-date tour running through the fall. Hall & Oates close out their season right where they began — on November 6th in Indio, California.

Fans who have followed Hall & Oates' live career over the years know all too well, that every year the material seems to take on totally new dimensions from the original hits. Daryl Hall explained that from tour to tour, songs can change in some pretty noticeable ways: “These songs have morphed so much. I mean, that's what happens. You have a band that knows each other as well as we do (and) things happen on each song. We leave lots of room for improvisation, changing of the arrangements and stuff like that. That's what keeps them interesting to us, too. Otherwise it would be, just going through the motions.”

Squeeze's Glenn Tilbrook admitted being estranged from Chris Difford for nearly a decade only made him enjoy and respect their partnership more: “Not working together has enabled us to appreciate each other for what we are. And not having the responsibility of going up each other's noses all the time has enabled us to get back our relationship, which was lost, really, when we started making records. I would rather have the relationship with Chris, and friendship, rather than the professional relationship — that's more important to me. And we get on better now than we have done at, y'know, any point since 1976, which is great.”

Daryl Hall (L) and John Oates are going on separate solo tours in 2023. Here, they're jamming out together onstage.

We’re here to sort of “Make Your Dreams Come True.”

In 2023, Daryl Hall and John Oates are going on tour — just not together.

From May 24 through June 9, Daryl Hall and the Daryl’s House Band are taking off on an eight-concert tour that includes stops in Montclair, NJ on May 24, Port Chester, NY on June 7 and Atlantic City, NJ on June 9.

His bandmate, John Oates will play five spring shows in California, Nashville and Chicago from April 13 through May 25.

At the time of publication, none of Oates’ shows are scheduled to take place in the Northeast.

No word on whether either Rock and Roll Hall of Famer will appear at each other’s shows either.

With that being said, if you want to see half of Hall and Oates — Hall or Oates — here’s everything you need to know.

Daryl Hall 2023 tour schedule

A complete calendar including all tour dates and venues for Hall’s eight 2023 concerts can be found below.

John Oates 2023 tour schedule

A complete calendar of all John Oates tour dates is listed below.

Daryl Hall new music

Hall went old school in 2022 and dropped the rare double album.

“Before After,” comprised of 30 tracks, features Hall’s signature classic sound — the indefinable center between pop and rock.

If you want to hear the double album in its entirety, you can find “Before After” here .

John Oates new music

Last year, Oates dropped just one song — the sensual single “Pushin’ A Rock” that sounds like it could fit in a playlist next to “She’s Gone,” “Maneater” and “Rich Girl.”

In 2023, Oates went a bit more downtempo. Thus far in this young year, he’s released just one song, the ballad “Disconnected.”

You can hear both songs here .

The end of the pandemic and a return to semi-normalcy are in sight, but April still seems a bit soon to plan on a concert with 8,000-plus fans at Blaisdell Arena.

So Daryl Hall & John Oates have rescheduled their minitour of Hawaii a third time. The shows now land on Nov. 9 for the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and Nov. 13 for the Blaisdell.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers — known for hits such as “Maneater,” “Private Eyes” and “Rich Girl” among their six No. 1 songs — were originally slated to come in March 2020, but COVID-19 ground the nation nearly to a halt a couple of weeks earlier and the dates were moved first to October 2020 and then to April. With most of the nation expected to be vaccinated by the end of summer, November seemed far enough out for what had been the next tour dates on their itinerary.

Cancellation was never a consideration for the top hit-making duo in rock history, Oates said last week in a phone call from his home in Nashville, Tenn. They’ve grown to love Hawaii over the years, for a multitude of reasons: the “amazing” fans, the friends they have here, the outdoor opportunities. Oates points to stand-up paddling and hiking as two must-dos when he visits the islands.

HALL & OATES’ NEW DATES

The duo’s April shows are being moved to the following dates: >> Nov. 9: Maui Arts & Cultural Center >> Nov. 13: Blaisdell Arena Info: hallandoates.com ; ticketmaster.com OATES SONG FEST 7908 >> 4 p.m. March 20 on Nugs.tv >> Info: johnoates.com ; nugs.tv

“We didn’t wanna give up on the idea, even though we had to push it back (now three times),” he said. Oates added that they are working on getting island music legend Henry Kapono back as the opening act. Kapono played their Blaisdell date in 2015, also joining the duo onstage to play “When the Morning Comes,” and was slated to open these shows.

With Hall & Oates’ return to performing pushed back further and the pandemic keeping them from making much progress on their first album of fresh material since 2003, Oates has had to find other ways to keep busy. He put out a live album and worked on some songs for the upcoming film “Gringa,” but his biggest project is Oates Song Fest 7908, a benefit for the charity Feeding America which will stream online for free at Nugs.tv on March 20. (It will only be available live.)

The two-hour show will feature dozens of performances from artists such as Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, Sara Bareilles, Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, Michael McDonald, former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar, Dan + Shay and Gavin DeGraw, as well as Daryl Hall himself.

Oates is excited about the array of musicians participating.

“We’ve got a lot of diversity — female, racially diverse, generationally diverse. We made it a point that we wanted to have a very inclusive-type show,” he said.

And he’s excited about working with Feeding America, which sends almost 99% of its funds to the programs it serves, including the Hawaii Foodbank. Viewers will be able to donate directly during the broadcast.

Oates and his wife, Aimee, who are paying for production costs on the benefit so that all donations go to Feeding America, were impelled to address the country’s food-insecurity problems while watching TV last year.

“I was aware that there was an issue,” Oates said, “but I didn’t realize how dramatic it was. When I began to see that, my first reaction was, well, I got angry. I just thought in a country like ours, no one should go without food. … I just believe that we can be better, and my wife and I just felt like that, and we just kept saying to ourselves we need to do more.”

The Song Fest idea grew out of the songwriters festival he used to host in Aspen, Colo. (the “7908” is for the town’s elevation).

“Over the summer we went out to Aspen,” Oates explained, “and there was a little bit of a lull in the pandemic and we thought maybe we can see our way out of this.” Aspen’s Mayor Torre, who used to be Oates’ roadie, suggested they revive the Aspen Song Festival. They aimed for March, hoping the pandemic would be over. “As we got into the fall,” Oates said, “we realized that wasn’t going to happen. But I still liked the idea, so I said let’s do a virtual version. It started small and we got involved with Nugs TV, which is a great streaming platform, and then we found Feeding America because we wanted to have a charitable component and the whole thing just took off.”

Oates said the plan is to revive the festival in Aspen eventually, as well as take it to other cities.

Music Duo Hall & Oates Officially Break Up After More Than 50 Years Together

The iconic pop-rock duo Hall & Oates have officially called it quits after more than five decades together.

Daryl Hall and John Oates came together in 1970 and began churning out hit after hit just a few years later.

The two burst onto the charts with 1973’s “She's Gone” and rattled off many other hits, including "Sara Smile," "Rich Girl," "Kiss on My List,” “Private Eyes,” “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)" and "Out of Touch."

https://youtu.be/87Q042KlxI4?si=ugV6rp5loUIilvHp

But Hall told Variety in an interview published on Friday that the relationship between him and his longtime collaborator had been severed and that one of music’s most famous duos was finished.

He explained that he was caught off guard last year when Oates expressed to him that he wanted to sell off his half of their shared company, Whole Oats Enterprises.

Per Variety, the company controls “trademarks, personal name and likeness rights, record royalty income, website and social media assets.”

Oates could not divest his half without his partner's mutual consent, which Hall said he was not interested in offering.

The situation seemingly led to their relationship falling apart. According to the singer and songwriter, Hall & Oates has now officially broken up.

On Oates wanting out of their company, Hall told the entertainment industry publication, “It hit me by surprise.”

He explained that the fallout over the business disagreement led him to question whether he really knew his friend and musical partner.

“I don’t know, man -- all I can say is people change and sometimes you don’t really know someone like you thought you did,” the 77-year-old said. “Difficulties can be made from things that aren’t difficult, and then it goes to a place where it can never come back from.”

Hall acknowledged that the situation was not ideal, but he also hinted that trouble had been brewing for some time.

“It’s unfortunate and untimely, but some things just change,” he said. “People rewrite history and harbor thoughts you had no idea about.”

Hall was then asked point blank if music fans had seen the last of Hall & Oates.

“That is correct,” the singer said.

“I haven’t had a creative relationship with John for at least 25 years,” Hall added. “We didn’t write songs together, we didn’t do anything together except perform live shows.”

“We had an arrangement that I couldn’t play my solo songs onstage with Hall & Oates -- and now I get to,” he concluded.

Oates -- who is on a solo tour -- did not provide a comment for Variety's story.

Just wrapped up the first show of the tour! 🎸 Now, a bit of press in Los Angeles before we head to Phoenix. J.O. 👊

Meanwhile, Hall said he was excited about his work with Dave Stewart -- a musician, producer and one-half of the group Eurythmics .

Stewart has worked with him on his solo music for four decades and contributed heavily to his forthcoming sixth studio solo album, “D,” which will be released in June.

“Dave has been my shadow partner since 1984. … We’re best friends," Hall said.

He also appeared to take a shot at Oates when explaining how well he and Stewart work together in the studio.

“It’s a real 50-50 project,” Hall told Variety. “Dave and I have a real partnership and have had for a long time.”
