Every year thousands of high school students flock to the campuses of HBCUs for an unforgettable time. College tours have been a spring vacation tradition for plenty of students  for years. But what happens when those students can't physically go due to funds or a pandemic?

The Virtual HBCU College Tour was created to give students the chance to learn about HBCUs and give them the opportunity to experience our beautiful campuses while helping them to answer the question "Can I really see myself here?"

The campus of a school is so important to choosing a college because there are plenty of options: city, rural, historic, new, football team or not, wide-spread, or close-knit. 

Join Reid Temple AME Church as we travel South to visit some of the top HBCU- Historically Black College Universities.

Allow your student to immerse in the history, music, art, food, and stories of each of these specially selected southern universities, while meeting students, civil rights activists exploring the campus, and hearing moving first-hand stories from the Civil Rights Movement.

Travel to the American South to visit some of the top HBCU- Historically Black College Universities.

In visiting different campuses, our participants see that there is a world of opportunity beyond their immediate environment. While touring the campus, they interact with current students and obtain a glimpse of the college experience. During information sessions, they receive facts about admission requirements, academic programs, and financial aid. Each student walks away from the tour learning something about each school, and more importantly, about him/herself.

The BE Project Tour Requirements & What to Expect

HBCU tours are an opportunity for High School students to experience Black college life for themselves. The tours allow students to visit multiple college campuses and meet with representatives from each school to get an “inside look”. If the student in your family is considering attendance at a Historically Black College or University, these tours will connect you with current students and admissions professionals who will give you the information you need to make the best choice for your student’s future.

General requirements to go on a tour:

• Must be 9th – 12th Graders
• Register for the tour
• Letters of recommendation
• Financial obligation
• Attend mandatory meetings starting in the Fall
• Attend informational meetings in the Spring,  watch for announcements]

Each tour package includes:

● Transportation to and from each HBCUs

● Knowledgeable chaperones

● Fun with other students

Howard University is a private, federally chartered historically black research university in Washington, D.C., located in the Shaw neighborhood. It is classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity” and accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Bowie State University is a public historically black university in Prince George’s County, Maryland, north of Bowie. It is part of the University System of Maryland. Founded in 1865, Bowie State is Maryland’s oldest historically black university and one of the ten oldest in the country. Bowie State is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

Lincoln University is a public state-related historically black university near Oxford, Pennsylvania. Founded as the private Ashmun Institute in 1854, it has been a public institution since 1972 and is the second HBCU in the state, after Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. More information

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is a public historically black university in Cheyney, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1837 as the Institute for Colored Youth, it is the oldest university out of all historically black colleges and universities in the United States. More information

Hampton University is a private, historically black, research university in Hampton, Virginia. Founded in 1868 as Hampton Agricultural and Industrial School, it was established by Black and White leaders of the American Missionary Association after the American Civil War to provide education to freedmen.

Virginia State University is a public historically Black land-grant university in Ettrick, Virginia. Founded on March 6, 1882, Virginia State developed as the United States’s first fully state-supported four-year institution of higher learning for Black Americans.

Virginia Union University is a private historically black Baptist university in Richmond, Virginia. It is affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA.

North Carolina Central University is a public historically black university in Durham, North Carolina. Founded by James E. Shepard in affiliation with the Chautauqua movement in 1909, it was supported by private funds from both Northern and Southern philanthropists.

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is a public, historically black land-grant research university in Greensboro, North Carolina. It is a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina System.

Caring For Young Minds Black College Tour was established with a vision to expose students to historically black colleges and universities. Students in middle school and high school have the opportunity to visit and experience different colleges and universities during the week of Spring Break to decide where they want to further their studies and gain the knowledge to select a major.

Since 1998, the Caring for Young Minds Black College Tour has taken hundreds of young African Americans to Black College campuses. Regardless of the destination, each student realizes the experience was much more enriching than a mere tour. Venturing afar or local, all of the students return home with a greater sense of what it means to attain good grades and attend a historically black college or university.

*Students are responsible for two meals – during mall visit and amusement park. 

How it works.

Phase 1 – Meet with the admissions office. Students are presented with all information about the school – including admissions, financial aid and campus life.

Phase 2 – Walking Tour – the students are given a walking campus tour by the college students.

Open to Students in Grades 6-12

Well-qualified Chaperones. Chaperone ratio 1: 4.

You will be issued 4 t-shirts; you will be required to wear khaki-colored slacks/skirt or capris for young ladies only; 1 – black and white outfit; comfortable shoes; rain gear

New guidelines for student lodging. Students will be housed two per room to prevent the spread of any viruses. Students select their own roommate.  If they fail to select their own roommate, CFYM will select for them.  

Students may request to sleep three or four to a room; however, no special pricing or accommodations will be made.  

Air Travel when applicable.

Luxury motor coach – Boys and girls travel separately.

• Two (2) Registered Nurses travel with the tour group to assist with medical problems.
• We have 2 (two) off-duty police officers who travel with the tour. You are allowed One (1) Piece of luggage and one book bag. You are welcomed to bring: Movies to share with the bus (G or PG13)

Refund Policy

The Caring for Young Minds Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Tour travels during Spring Break in coordination with the Baltimore County Public School System. Registrations for the Caring for Young Minds Black College Tour begin at the beginning of the Academic School Year – typically the month of August.  Any cancellations or request for refunds must be made before December 31 of the Academic School year and prior to Spring Break.  All funds will be refunded; however, the cost of the registration fee is nonrefundable and non-transferable; however, it may be used for a new registration.  Refunds will not be provided for requests made after December 31st of the academic year.

Circumstances beyond the control of the Tour organizers may necessitate substitutions, alterations, rescheduling or cancellations of the tour, school(s) and activities. Therefore, Caring for Young Minds reserves the right to alter or modify the advertised itinerary if necessary.  All registered participants will be automatically shifted to the rescheduled event(s) at no additional cost.  Any substitutions, alterations or rescheduled itineraries will be updated on the company’s web site as soon as possible.

We realize that exceptional circumstances can take place with regard to the character of the Tour we provide. THEREFORE, WE DO HONOR REQUESTS FOR REFUND WHERE THE FOLLOWING REASONS APPLY:

• Non-delivery of service: such as, for example, due to some reason 3 or more of the schools listed on the originally published itinerary has changed and your desire to attend the tour has diminished;
• Should there be an extreme illness on the part of the student or parent which precludes them from traveling during the time of the Tour;
• The Tour was not-as-described: a request based on this reason is satisfied on a case by case basis with Caring for Young Minds reserving full discretion to make the determination whether a refund is appropriate.

A request for refund must be made via e-mail to [email protected] . A cancellation acknowledgement email will be sent within 3 working days and fees refunded within 10 working days, subject to this Refund Policy.  Where Caring for Young Minds offers a non-tangible irrevocable service, we do not issue refunds for the tour once completed.

Graduating from high school in 2017, Johnson chose Central State University in Zenia, Ohio, because it was an HBCU school and the institution wanted her for its basketball team.

Thinking she might want to go to an HBCU, she was also being recruited by a number of schools referred to as predominantly while institutions. As a junior at Waukegan, she spent spring break on Waukegan Township’s Artis Yancey HBCU Tour.

“It validated everything I was thinking,” Johnson said. “I knew an HBCU was for me. I wanted to be surrounded by successful people who looked like me.”

Johnson is one of more than 300 teens who visited HBCUs as they considered their college choice as the tour celebrated its 10th anniversary Friday with a cookout at Corrine Rose Park in Waukegan, where guests listened to a number of success stories like hers.

Waukegan Township Supervisor Marc Jones said exposing high school students from Waukegan, North Chicago, Zion and other parts of Lake County to HBCUs shows them options other than schools in Chicago and around Illinois where they often look.

“It gives them an opportunity to be exposed to a different experience,” he said. “It’s important they get the opportunity to travel, and step out of their comfort zone and be exposed to those opportunities.”

Though Central State was not on the tour when Johnson made the trip, the journey played a key role for her toward the end of her junior season there. She said she chose the school because it was not only a HBCU, but relatively close to home

One of the schools Johnson visited as a high school junior was Albany State University in Albany, Georgia. When she learned her coach at Central State was leaving after a losing season, she wanted basketball stability as a senior. She entered the NCAA transfer portal.

“I remembered Albany State from the tour and I liked it,” Johnson said. “The coach was there for 30 years. We played against them, and he saw me play. I was going to a winning school, and it was one I really liked.”

Johnson is currently a youth sports specialist for the Waukegan Park District. As she interacts with youngsters there, she said she has taken the opportunity to let some of the athletes know how good her college experience was.

The tour got its start 10 years ago when the late Artis Yancey, then the Waukegan city clerk, approached then Waukegan Township Supervisor Patricia Jones — Marc Jones’ mother — about the possibility. She went to work organizing it.

“She was the catalyst,” Marc Jones said. “She raised the money and raised awareness.”

Melvin Bobo IV was part of the first tour 10 years ago, and a legacy at Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama. He graduated from high school in 2017. He knew the benefits of an HBCU, but he was also a standout quarterback and heavily recruited by colleges.

Bobo said he chose Black Hills State University in Spearfish, Montana, because he was offered a full scholarship. He started at safety as a freshman, but realized it was not a good fit. He reached out to Tuskegee and was its starting quarterback the next fall.

“It did not meet my goals as a student or an athlete,” Bobo said of Black Hills State.

Currently working for Enterprise Rent a Car in its corporate office, Bobo said he will begin his professional football career next year. He signed a contract with the Chicago Blue Bombers of the United Football League when it starts operations in 2024.

Another tour alum, Raven May, graduated from Waukegan High School in 2020 and headed for Spelman College in Atlanta. She will graduate next year and head to medical school. The tour sealed her desire to attend an HBCU.

“It was a terrific experience for me,” May said. “I saw a lot of successful people who looked like me. It is deeply rooted in the history and tradition of the African American community.”

After a summer internship at the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison, Wisconsin, in a program focusing on wellness in rural and urban settings, May said she is ready to continue her education at a predominantly white institution if it is the best fit for her.

“I have a sense of purpose and a tool kit to navigate in a space similar to (how I did at) Spelman,” May said. “It taught me to become confident and know I will be successful.”

Visiting College Campuses Helps You Make an Informed Decision

Choosing a college or university can be tough. One of the best ways to determine if a school is a fit for you is to visit the campus where you’ll have the opportunity to ask professors and students about their experiences. There are plenty of college tours sponsored by a variety of black fraternities, sororities, and other organizations that will take you to several different schools in a single region. HBCU Making Moves Tour

Our HBCU Making Moves Tour focuses on exposure to the rich legacy of the HBCUs and the unlimited opportunities an HBCU college education provides.

Our History

It all started in 1987, when Carl Ray put four boys on a plane, flew them into Atlanta, rented a van and took them to Tuskegee’s Homecoming. Since that one trip, over 5500 high school and community college students have attended the tours. Helping Carl on these tours always were his trusted friends Reginald Braddock, Brenda Long and John Wright, all four Tuskegee Institute Graduates. Sadly, Carl passed away in 2015. Today, Reggie, Brenda and myself continue where Carl left off. We have never stopped. We continue the work, the commitment, the duty, and the responsibility of the Tours because of the impact that it has upon the kids. We have had students (especially our young men) that have never dreamed of going to college, end up going to college, graduate and become very, very successful.

Our HBCU Making Moves Tour focuses on exposing your child to the unlimited opportunities afforded them through a college education. The accomplishments range from (but are not limited to) the richness of cultures, histories, traditions, legacies, heritage, and pride. The student has a chance to meet and talk with Professors and student body who will support their endeavors to be successful.

Along with visits to numerous HBCU campuses, there are many cultural and historical sites that will be visited pertaining to African American Culture.

When your child returns from the Making Moves Tour, it is hoped that they will have gained a sense of pride in themselves inspiring them to greater strives.  Making Moves is there for a continuance of lifeline support, guidance, and mentoring as your child will continue to be shadowed throughout high school and college graduation.

The annual Historically Black College and University Bus Tour exposes aspiring college students to the world of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in order to promote increased college attendance at these institutions of higher learning. Over 10 original partner HBCUs from Pennsylvania to Georgia are visited throughout the tour, and the majority of these institutions become the future academic homes of our college tour participants. Currently the tours service interested candidates in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. What we're about.

Since 2007 Ivy Rose Foundation, Inc. has sponsored an annual tour of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in conjunction with Delta Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The goal of the tour is to encourage the furtherance of education beyond high school while sharing the rich heritage of some of the universities which were available to African Americans during the early days of racial segregation. 

The College Tour experience begins with a series of preparatory workshops. The students then visit eight to ten schools from Maryland to Georgia over 5 days. Many of students who participate in the tour are from low-income families and for some it is their first time venturing outside New York City or seeing a college campus.

BMOA supports PUSH Excel HBCU College Tour

• April 18, 2019

The Black McDonald’s Operators Association (BMOA) recently sponsored a collection of Chicagoland high school students to participate in college tours, visiting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) across the southeast United States. In conjunction with Operation PUSH and the PUSH Excel program and Metropolitan Family Services and the Upward Bound program, the BMOA along with other community partners helped send nearly 150 local students on the tour during their Spring Break. April

13 – 20, students visited seven HBCUs including Fisk University, Tennessee State University, Kentucky State University, Morehouse College, Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University and Florida A&M University. The support of education in African American communities is a strategic pillar for the BMOA, which is why they chose to support the tours as well as sponsor some of their own local McDonald’s employees to attend.

“At McDonald’s we fully support providing our young people with opportunity through both employment and through educational initiatives like the 2019 HBCU College Tour,” says BMOA President Derrick Taylor.

“Support of this tour is just one of the ways that the BMOA attempts to give back to communities we serve. We hope the students have an enriching experience on the tour and that it will inform their decision to pursue higher education once they finish high school.”

For more than two decades, Arrow Collegiate Tour has been sponsoring College Tours to some of the most prestigious Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) on the east coast. In addition to our week-long Spring Break Tour, we also sponsor day trips to select colleges and universities, throughout the year. Our tours have also included partnerships with churches and school systems.

We look to coordinate day trips, during special occasions, like “Open Houses” and “College Days,” for many of the select schools on our list, so that students can get the full experience by seeing all that the schools have to showcase (including degree-programs, athletics, pep rallies, Greek life and a highlight of extracurricular activities).

Our buses originate from the DC/Maryland/Virginia (DMV) region of the country and travel, as far as, Tallahassee and Orlando, Florida, during the Spring Break Tour. As new college tours are scheduled, we update our website. Please take a moment to review our section on Upcoming Tours and to register and pay for your student(s). For our overnight trips, we offer a mandatory Parent Orientation to provide an overview of the tour, review safety rules and regulations, address concerns and answer questions. The trips are designed to:

• provide exposure to college campus life; • introduce students to Admissions and Financial Aid Counselors; • give the students an opportunity for On-the-Spot Admissions (with required paperwork); and • provide a comprehensive, but memorable, experience, to assist each student with making the decision on the school that is right for them.

Our Spring Break Tour is typically scheduled in conjunction with the calendar for Prince George’s County, Maryland schools, but students are invited to participate from around the country and download our form for Excused Absence for educational purposes. We will also provide dates for Scholarship Workshops, to assist parents and students with meeting the financial obligations of college.

Thank you for giving my Girl Scout Troop members the time of their lives! We decided to distribute your Spring Break HBCU College Tour flyer to our whole troop of 16 and 17 yr-olds. They were excited about visiting the schools in North Carolina, Atlanta and Florida. The moms and I stayed in touch, throughout the week, excited for our girls and their experience. When they returned, they had brand new insight on college life and were all charged up! Now, it’s full speed ahead, as we prepare them for freshman year as college students. College baseball needs more Black players. A tiny Kansas school has a unique approach to recruiting

Only about 5% of college baseball players and coaches are African American. At Kansas Christian College, team leaders have made a deliberate effort to recruit from inner-city Kansas City — boosting Black representation in the process.

Kansas Christian College, in Overland Park, is bucking a trend.

In a collegiate sport where African American representation is in short supply , almost a third of the private school’s student-athletes in baseball are Black.

“It’s been our mission, in the very beginning when I was hired to take on this program,” said Falcons baseball coach Tony Hurla, who has led the team since 2019.

Though the institution is affiliated with the Church of God (Holiness), school leaders recruit students of various denominations and backgrounds. Of the approximately 200 students at KCC, Hurla said around 60% to 70% are minorities.

“It’s something I’m passionate about as well, having grown up in Kansas City, to give opportunity to urban-area kids,” said Hurla, echoing a priority that was instilled by his father, Dennis Hurla. The elder Hurla was a former Bishop Ward High School head coach who directed the Cyclones to 10 Kansas baseball championships.

According to NCAA statistics , only 5% of baseball players in all divisions are African American. That number drops to 3% for NCAA teams that don’t come from historically Black colleges and universities.

At Kansas Christian , which plays against NAIA and lower-division NCAA schools but is in the National Christian College Athletic Association, 10 of Hurla’s players come from within urban Kansas City, Missouri , or Kansas City, Kansas . In those public school systems, minority students make up the majority.

Starting at the grassroots

When he was younger, Falcons’ senior catcher Kris Davis bounced around between several schools, dating back to his preteen years on Chicago’s South Side.

“When I was 12 years old, my mom and my father, we moved to Kansas City for a better living environment. It was too dangerous, like the gangs out there, stuff like that,” said Davis, who finished high school at Park Hill South, where 11% of the student body is Black .

“Big Kris,” as he’s called by his teammates, stands 6-foot-5 — 2 inches taller than the catcher he admires most, Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals.

“In our first full year of the program, six of our nine starters were African American,” Davis noted. “I played against these guys growing up and it was like being at home, just playing with that chemistry.”

“Tony Hurla and Papa (Dennis) Hurla are awesome coaches. I really praise God for them,” Davis said.

Now settled, Davis stood tall as one of eight players recognized at his team’s Senior Day game in April at the Kansas City Urban Youth Academy, where KCC hosts the 2024 NCCAA Baseball World Series this week.

With his senior year as a player drawing to a close, Davis is interested in pursuing coaching as a career path, and more than willing to start at the grassroots level.

“Probably (I’ll) coach an RBI team just to get the head coaching experience,” he said, referring to Major League Baseball’s Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities program. “I want to take coaching to the next level — as far as I can honestly.”

‘We’re still talking about firsts'

For Black players who are interested in coaching like Davis, a dearth of college baseball coaches who look like them doesn’t bode well. Only 3% of the coaches at all NCAA levels are African American. At non-HBCU institutions in 2023, there were just nine Black head coaches.

Kerrick Jackson became the first African American head baseball coach in Southeastern Conference history when he was named the University of Missouri’s 15th head coach in June 2023.

“It’s good and bad,” Jackson told KCUR before the season began. “It’s good because we’re breaking some glass ceilings. It’s bad because it’s 2024 and we’re still talking about firsts.”

At Kansas State University in Manhattan, assistant coach Austin Wates is the Big 12 Conference’s only African American coach. Wates was a scout in Texas before K-State head coach Pete Hughes hired him.

“You want to have a background and a resume that says: ‘This guy’s got a shot to do a really good job,’” Wates said recently. “But it also takes an administrator taking a little bit of a leap of faith, like coach Hughes did for me.”

That’s part of why KCC’s coach Hurla keeps tabs on former players, to improve the pipeline of talent in baseball roles that aren’t strictly on-the-field.

“A couple of them went on to work at the Urban Youth Academy and another is umpiring in the local community,” he said.

As much as the Falcons would like to win a title at this week’s national championship (their best finish was fifth in 2022), Hurla says there are other lessons to be learned.

“I want them to be able to handle success without gloating, handle failure without giving in, and I want to see them embrace challenges in their life,” he said.

With that kind of support, “Big Kris” Davis’ hopes for a coaching job, and a bigger spotlight down the road, seem that much more possible.

“People don’t understand … how many opportunities baseball has,” said Davis. “There’s some talent here. There’s some talent in the inner city. I say to these scouts who come here, check us out, honestly.”

The second major of the 2024 golf season continues being contested with plenty of big-time players looking to set a tone for the remainder of the campaign. This as the beautify of May surrounds Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville with the PGA Championship returning to town for the first time in a decade.

An unfortunate wrench was thrown into the tournament Friday morning as, in unrelated incidents, a pedestrian was killed outside the Valhalla grounds in a traffic incident and world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested for violating traffic rules . Even before that shocking incident, Scheffler had an immense amount of pressure on his shoulders. It finally caught up with him Saturday as he went 4 over through his first four holes and fell far enough off pace where winning the Wanamaker Trophy is less likely for him than it has been all week.

Xander Schauffele entered Moving Day with the 36-hole lead matching a PGA Championship scoring record sitting 12 under after the first two rounds. While he's been immensely impressive,  Schauffele has not separated himself from the pack . In fact, Collin Morikawa, Shane Lowry, Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Rose, Viktor Hovland and Rory McIlroy are all making moves Saturday attempting to create momentum ahead of Sunday's final round. Georgia Tech Football Gets Updated Projected Win Total For the 2024 Season

We are still three months away from the 2024 college football season kicking off in Dublin, Ireland with Georgia Tech facing Florida State. It is going to be the biggest game of that week and now with spring football over and the spring transfer portal window closed, the rosters for this season are set and now the discussion can really begin for who the top teams will be for the upcoming season.

With that comes new projected win totals and most sportsbooks have Georgia Tech with a projected win total of 5.5. Yesterday, Circa Sports dropped their new win totals and it had Georgia Tech with a projected win total of five, a half win lower than other projections.

This might seem like a low win total for a team returning as much on offense as Georgia Tech, but the two big reasons that it remains here are the schedule and the defensive concerns. There is no doubt that Georgia Tech should have one of the best offenses in the ACC. Haynes King is back along with running back Jamal Haynes, a deep receiving corps led by Eric Singleton Jr, and an offensive line that returns the majority of its snaps from the No. 1 ranked rushing attack in the ACC and one of the best at protecting the quarterback. If King cuts down on the turnovers, this offense could take another leap this season.

Let's talk about the concerns that keep this win total low on the sportsbooks.

The defense was one of the worst in the country last season and they will have to prove that they have take a step forward. I think there is reason to believe they will, as Brent Key has revamped the defensive coaching staff, bringing in former Duke defensive coordinator Tyler Santucci, along with a host of other coaches. They have also brought in defensive players in the portal. USC defensive end Romello Height, Penn State defensive tackle Jordan van den Berg, Illinois cornerback Zachary Tobe, and Cincinnati safety Jayden Davis are going to try and make an impact this fall. Some of the winter portal transfer additions were already making impacts in the spring, which should bring optimism. Still, the results are going to have to be there on the field.

The schedule has been talked about a lot, but it is brutal.

247Sports Analyst Brad Crawford ranked the Yellow Jackets 2024 schedule as the 6th toughest schedule in the country:

"One of only two ACC teams in our toughest schedules rankings, Georgia Tech has a difficult road ahead, especially if November when the Yellow Jackets play Miami, NC State and Georgia to end it. Brent Key must have this team ready to go every week, or else getting to bowl eligibility will be a challenge."

Seven of Georgia Tech's opponents appeared in the 247Sports post-spring top 25. 11 of Georgia Tech's 12 opponents played in bowl games last season.

It is no doubt going to be a tough schedule, even for a team that is returning a lot of talent and should have one of the best offenses in the ACC and the country. The good thing for the Yellow Jackets is that Key has shown an ability to win tough games and games where his program is an underdog dating back to when he took over as the interim head coach. Last season, Georgia Tech scored wins over Miami and North Carolina as underdogs, as well as playing Georgia tougher than most opponents did last season.

If Georgia Tech wants to be considered a dark horse contender for the ACC, they are going to have to earn it.
