Depends what you want to see. It is about an hour to Rome from the cruise ship terminal. It is mega hot in July so we didn't really get that hungry, just drank loads of water and there are lots of taps in Rome to fill a water bottle up with. Personally I found the inside of the Colosseum really interesting and you can buy a combined forum/colosseum ticket if you want. You can get there by bus and train and go for a hop on hop off bus tour yourself or get a group together and book a private transfer in and out? It would probably be cheaper?

We did the *Best of Rome* excursion, it was pricey but was well worth to us and our group was limited to only 20 guests. When we returned the following year, we then did *Rome on your Own* and saw The Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona and had a delicious lunch at one of the restaurants near the Piazza Navona.

Silverseas, when we were in Rome we did a private tour with Marco Rome Tours. We did the 1 day in Rome Tour with Marco. It was pricey but an exceptional day we will never forget. Here is a link to his website. He also does excursion from the port as well.

We saw the main highlights of Rome, had a great lunch with him and more importantly skipped all the lines. We started with him at 8am and we were finished at 3pm.

If you need any more help let me know or have questions let me know.

Find your roll call and join a group of 8 or start a tour. Italytoursharing.com is very easy to start a group.. Go to their site and see all the tours. I did the best of Rome without the Vatican last year and it was fabulous. I'm doing it again in June! Smaller groups, less expensive and awesome

Linda, I think your best bet is to surf onto cruisecritic.com (TripAdvisor sister company); then find Roll Call forum; and then see what people are saying about these excursions. There are not a lot of cruisers on this forum and, so, I am afraid you will not get the answers you need. That small tour for $350 sounds pretty hefty but that could very well be the going rate. Like I said, take a look at what your fellow cruisers are saying.

Try the Ports of Call section of cruisecritic.com for some other options.

If cost is an issue, there are a few posts on T/A about dong it on your own or with other companies.

Thanks so much for the advice to go to cruisecritic.com. It makes perfect sense...

Just looking for clarification on this trip which takes in St Peters and Colliseum.

If bought through the ship are we guaranteed entry into both ? I guess price paid includes admission but do we have to queue ? It also says that if there is a 45 minute wait the guide will talk about things outside the venue - hardly the same !!!!

Also, when they refer to guide are they talking about someone who is going to take you through the attraction as well ?

Bit confused at mo'

We have not done this excursion, but I had a quick look at the description. It sounds like the tour would include entry and a guided tour of both the Coliseum and St. Peter's Basilica under normal circumstances, but they cannot guarantee entry. There are several factors, including long wait times to get in through security and closures for special events.

There is so much limiting language in this tour description that I would prepare to be disappointed when taking it! I would not be happy with a description of the attraction from the outside and more shopping time. Depending on the time of year, Rome can be very busy, so "skip-the-line" tours are essential if you do not have much time. If I were going for just the day as a cruise excursion, I would pay extra to book with a reputable company that can prearrange entry to the sites.

lakelorain

We took this tour and it was one of the best tours we've been on. Short wait at St. Peter's. Walked right in at the Colosseum. Our tour guide was amazing. Lots of walking so be prepared.

There is always a chance that something may be going on that will interrupt your tour. But, that can happen anywhere and on any tour.

1. Colosseum, one of the biggest attractions in the world

There is no way to take a trip to Rome and not go to the Colosseum or at least take a photo in its surroundings. The ancient Roman arena where gladiators fought is one of the city’s unmissable tourist attractions and represents a lot of the country’s history. The place was built from 72 AD as an arena in which people from different social classes could have fun and be entertained, especially with fights between gladiators and ferocious animals. It is believed that the arena’s audience reached up to 70 thousand spectators!

The construction of the space is impressive, not only for its size and the huge stone blocks, but also for what is known about its construction from the time of the Roman Empire, when there were types of elevators and ramps that provided access between the lower part and top of the arena.

2. Roman Forum and Palatine

An integral part of the entrance to the Colosseum, the Roman Forum corresponds to an area close to the ancient arena, and is the space where the main activities of imperial and republican Roman society took place. There were public and religious buildings, such as temples and squares, speeches, processes and public ceremonies took place.

Today the area is in ruins, but some buildings are very well preserved and can be visited internally. Among the points of interest of the Roman Forum are the Temple of Saturn, Basilica Emilia, Arch of Settimio Severo, and the Via Sacra, the main street of the time.

The Palatine Hill is one of the hills around Rome and close to the Roman Forum, but about 40 meters higher and due to its height, it offers a very cool view of the Roman Forum. It was in the ancient area of the Palatine that the city of Rome was believed to have been founded, around VIII BC. It is another tour that holds remains of ancient buildings and palaces made for high Roman society, in addition to offering a beautiful landscape for the entire archaeological site.

3. Trevi Fountain

Measuring 26 meters high and 20 meters wide, the Trevi Fountain is the largest fountain in the Italian capital and needs to be on your list of unmissable things to do in Rome, whether during the day or at night. The setting for many films, it is an icon of Rome, is part of one of the facades of Palazzo Poli and was designed by Nicola Salvi.

Located in the heart of the capital, it is a tourist spot in Rome that is always full at almost any time of the day — anyone who wants to see it without the competition of faces in their photos can try waking up very early or going almost at dawn to see it. With fewer people around, this becomes easier especially in winter, when the flow of tourists is smaller.

4. Pantheon (Pantheon) and Rotonda Square

In the historic center of the city, the Pantheon is an ancient Roman temple dedicated to all the gods and converted into a church, called the Basilica of Saint Mary and Martyrs in Rome. It’s a tour you shouldn’t miss in Rome, especially because it’s a free tourist attraction!

It is a place of impressive architecture, with a circular shape and enormous ceiling height, which has a singular dome, 43 meters in diameter, which has a central opening where light and occasionally rain enters. Inside the Pantheon are the tombs of important personalities in Italian history, such as. the painter Rafael Sanzio and two Italian kings, Humberto I and Vittorio Emanuelle II, symbol of Italian unification.

As it is a church, the place is free to access and is located in the Rotonda Square (Piazza). As it is a religious temple, pay attention to the rules of dress and behavior during your visit, especially during mass times there. This tip, in fact, applies to all churches you visit in Rome.

The Pantheon celebrates masses on Saturdays at 5pm and on Sundays and holidays at 10:30am.

5. Vatican: St. Peter’s Square and St. Peter’s Basilica

The headquarters of the Catholic Church is located in the smallest sovereign state in the world, the Vatican. And visiting the Vatican when in Rome is a really cool trip, even if Catholicism is not your religion. The space is open to the public and has monumental and iconic buildings, including St. Peter’s Square, a baroque-style square, open to the faithful from all over the world, and St. Peter’s Basilica.

St. Peter’s Basilica

St. Peter’s Basilica, with its 23 thousand square meters, is the most important Catholic building in the world. Its imposing and detailed construction, with enormous columns, was contributed by several artists, including Rafael and Michelangelo. The place is recognized as a UNESCO heritage site and among its points of interest are the tomb of Pope John Paul II and its dome, open to the public and offering a beautiful view — access to the dome can only be done by stairs, for €8 (there are 551 steps) or elevator + stairs (310 steps), for €10. It is also possible to book a tour with a guide, entrance ticket and elevator included.
