Where You'll Stay

Operated by intrepid travel.

Back in 1989, two guys from Melbourne, Australia by the names of Darrell and Manch set off on an adventure to the other side of the world. They travelled to Africa and without air conditioning on their modified truck, they filled it with supplies, some beer, a bunch of aviator sunglasses, and some friends. On that trip, they came up with the idea that perhaps others may be interested in this style of travel too. Just like that, Intrepid was born. Intrepid has come a long way since then, now giving over 100,000 travelers a year the opportunity to experience small group travel across all 7 continents. They use local transport, sleep in local accommodation from Cambodian stilt houses to Moroccan riads, and employ 100% local leaders. With three different travel styles including basix, original and comfort, themes ranging from cycling trips to family holidays, and itineraries crafted with the perfect balance of must-see sights and free time, Intrepid caters to every type of traveller no matter their age, budget or travel style. The company has grown but their mission remains the same: to change the way people see the world through sustainable, experience-rich travel

Frequently Asked Questions

This tour is rated 3 out of 5 on Intrepid's physical rating system so it is recommended that all travellers taking it be at a medium level of fitness. They have also advised us of a few notes that you can see below: - Nepali infrastructure is still returning to normal after last year's earthquake, so some delays are inevitable. Embracing the slow pace and meditative atmosphere will go a long way toward your enjoyment of this beautiful country. - This trip does not go to high altitude, so acclimatizing will be relatively easy. Please ensure you speak to your leader if you have issue swimming prior to the rafting activity - The guesthouse at Nuwakot has steep, narrow stairs up to the rooms.

Most Intrepid travellers are in fact solo, and they don't charge a mandatory single supplement if you’re happy to share a room with a traveller of the same gender. However, if you want your own room, you can mention it to us and we will be able to add it onto your package for an additional charge.

This is a wonderful trip with Intrepid tours and you'll stay in a range of accommodations: ''Camping (with basic facilities) (1nt), Farmstay (2nt), Guesthouse (2nt), Hotel (3nt), Resort (1nt) Accommodation at local lodges - better known as teahouses - are simple but comfortable. Toilets and washing facilities are shared and rudimentary, and the food is plain and filling. In a teahouse, passengers are provided with small twin share rooms with twin beds, mattresses and pillows. At times, in high seasons, and in places where there are limited number of teahouses, passengers have to make do with dormitories. In some places, teahouses don't have access to electricity, depending on solar powered lighting instead. In more remote regions, teahouses don't have running water and toilets can mean just a hole in the ground. Hot shower facilities are available in some teahouses for a price but in most of the places, a hot shower means a bucket.

Why Choose a Travel Agency in Nepal?

When planning a incredible trip to Nepal, you might wonder why you should choose a local tours agency instead of a familiar international one. Here's why:

Understanding the Value of Local Expertise

In Nepal, every path is a journey and every corner tells a story. The vibrant local markets, the tranquil monasteries, the scenic mountain trails – there's so much to discover and experience. But to unlock the authentic essence of Nepal, you need guidance from those who know it best: the locals.

Local tour companies in Nepal are operated by professionals who have grown up amidst these mesmerizing landscapes. They have a deep-rooted understanding of the local culture, traditions, and customs. They can guide you through off-beat trails, share tales of local folklore, and ensure you get to taste the most delicious local delicacies. Their insider knowledge can turn your trip from a generic tour into a personalized journey of discovery.

Convenience and Customized Packages

International agencies might offer standardized packages that cater to the generic crowd. But when you're venturing into a unique destination like Nepal, you deserve a travel experience that's as unique as you are. This is where nepal travel companies shine.

Whether you're an adrenaline junkie seeking a thrilling trek to the Everest Base Camp, a history buff yearning to explore the heritage sites of Kathmandu Valley, or a spirituality seeker drawn to the peaceful monasteries of Lumbini, local agencies can curate tailored packages that align with your interests, fitness levels, and travel goals.

Safety and Risk Management

Traveling in a foreign land comes with its share of uncertainties. In the rugged terrains of Nepal, you might encounter challenges like altitude sickness, unexpected weather changes, or tricky trekking paths.

Here again, the expertise of a local travel agency in Nepal is invaluable. They are equipped to foresee and handle such situations. Their guides are trained in first aid and risk management, ensuring that you can embark on your adventure with confidence and peace of mind.

Moreover, in the post-pandemic world, these agencies are committed to implementing health and safety protocols, ensuring you can explore the wonders of Nepal without compromising on your wellbeing.

How to Choose the Right Travel Agency in Nepal

Here are some crucial factors to consider when choosing a travel agency in Nepal:

Checking Agency Credentials and Reviews

Just as you wouldn't hand over your car to an unlicensed mechanic, you shouldn't trust your travel plans to an uncertified agency. Ensure that the agency is registered with the appropriate local authorities like the Ministry of Tourism in Nepal. Also, check if they are affiliated with recognized international travel organizations.

Don't stop at just checking credentials. Dive into the experiences of past travelers too. Look up reviews on independent platforms, social media, and travel forums. Real-life experiences of fellow travelers can provide valuable insights into the agency's reliability, professionalism, and service quality.

Nepal Tour Packages

Nepal tour packages offer a wide array of experiences, from trekking the majestic Himalayas to exploring cultural sites. Packages often include accommodation, transportation, and guide services, with flexibility for customization. It's vital to check what's included and consider the season for travel. Preparation and safety, especially for trekking, are crucial. So, whether you're an adventurer, culture enthusiast, or nature lover, there's a Nepal tour package that can be tailored to your needs for an unforgettable journey.

Assessing the Quality of Customer Service

Your travel agency will be your lifeline during your trip. Their attitude towards customer service can significantly impact your travel experience.

Try to gauge their responsiveness, attentiveness, and flexibility. Do they respond promptly to your queries? Do they take the time to understand your unique needs and preferences? Are they flexible enough to tailor their packages according to your requirements? These are indicators of an agency that genuinely values its customers.

Evaluating the Agency's Sustainability Practices

In this era of conscious travel, it's important to choose a travel agency that respects the destinations it promotes. Sustainable tourism is especially crucial in a biodiverse country like Nepal, home to fragile ecosystems and endangered species.

Investigate the agency's sustainability practices. Do they adhere to responsible trekking guidelines? Do they contribute to local communities? Are they mindful of their carbon footprint? Choosing an agency that practices sustainable tourism not only contributes to conserving Nepal's natural and cultural heritage but also enriches your travel experience by fostering meaningful connections with the local environment and people.

Before Booking with a Nepalese Travel Agency

Understanding the booking procedure.

Booking with a Nepalese travel agency is generally simple. It often involves selecting a package online, having a chat with the agency about your needs, and securing your booking. Payment methods commonly include bank transfer or credit card, and sometimes payment upon arrival.

Questions for Your Travel Agency

Before you settle on a booking, clarify all necessary details. Understand what the package covers and what it doesn't. Are there extra costs? If trekking, inquire about acclimatization, emergency procedures, and guide-client ratios. Transparency from the company is key here.

Getting Ready for Your Nepal Trip: Key Tips

Once your booking is locked in, it's time to prepare for your adventure. Look into local weather, packing essentials, and cultural norms. Your Nepal travel agency should provide an itinerary and a packing list. If you're trekking, start working on your fitness.

This is not a trekking tour but a valley walking/sightseeing tour, also to Chitwan.

I am in a group of 15 coming over from the UK, and we have a 12night tour.

Im responsible for organising the tips.

Im really confused as to how much is the total amount we should tip our local guide and coach driver, as well as our city guide in KTM, and how much to leave for hotel staff each night.

Any help would be great, as I can find loads on trekking but not on this kind of tour.

Online Ive found: US$4-5 per person, per day can be used....which seems alot.

Others say 35,000-40,000 Nepalese rupees (US$265-US$300) in total from the group as a whole, but for how long a tour is that?

I realise the issue of tipping is so sensitive, I want to try to get it right,

many thanks

We (?) are trying to enforce the 15% of salary rule, but the problem is that it is quite difficult to find out how much the agencies are paying their staff, or at all, relying on big tips instead.

My guess is that a city guide might get $20-25 per day, coach driver maybe $15, in rupees of course.

13 days times 0.15 times 25 = 50 USD or about 6500 NRs. This from the whole group to the guide, not each individual. This equates to one day's salary per week of work.

American tipping habits and ignorance about price/salary levels in developing countries is wreaking havoc in travel service business pricing in Nepal. Do not fall into this trap.

Controversial topic.

Re #3: Do NOT ask the tour operator because big tips only result in smaller or no salaries. That way you pay twice for the service and in practice the tip goes to the agency owner who keeps the money you paid against the salary the worker was supposed to receive.

Post 4: I agree. Many tour operators will cut wages and tell staff to rely more on tips for their overall remuneration.

If you are travelling with a big operator everyone knows that the money you paid for will reach the service provider after several layers of people in between making their margins. You will never find out the actual salary that your service provider is getting. With tips you are directly paying to your service provider whatever amount you find suitable. Any reputed travel company should provide guidance to their clients instead of letting them feel ripped off their hard earned money. A satisfied and happy client is very important to every service provider be it a small nepali travel company or a reputed international company like interpid.

intrepid travel agency nepal

#6 you seem to give different meanings to 'service provider' throughout your post so it's a little confusing. But as to your statement "You will never find out the actual salary that your service provider is getting." if in this case you mean the guide or porter (or other trek staff) there is an easy way: ask them how much they are getting paid.

' class=

okay if the guide is staying for miore than a day pay him according to day like 20$ per day as you are in group . if you are with a person for 1 day 15$should to the task .

okay if you dont know the salary of guide in per day basis agency pay between 1800-2500 npr to guide

for porter its 1500-1800 npr per day this is mostly of guide some might charge more or less but in most agency this is the wage and that is why guides and porter are depended on tips .

USAID Trade and Competitiveness

Start: jan/26/2022 | end: jan/25/2027 | funding: $19 million.

USAID Trade and Competitiveness supports broad-based, market-driven growth for Nepal’s economy. Working with the private and public sectors, this activity advances micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprise development, establishes new trade opportunities, and unlocks Nepal’s investment potential.

USAID Trade and Competitiveness will improve the productivity of 1,500 firms, increase sales by $53 million, and catalyze $175 million in investment. The activity will also improve access to financial services, facilitate market systems, attract investments and improve the business environment which START includes transparent policy reform.

USAID Trade and Competitiveness Promotes enterprise expansion and employment:

USAID promotes three sectors poised for dramatic expansion, job creation, and income generation. The first is agro-processing, readily accessible to Nepali people in rural and peri-urban areas throughout the country. The second is tourism, a rapidly growing sector that can provide good jobs while preserving cultural treasures and the environment. The final area is digital services, a sector primed to support future youth employment, innovation, and the foundations for broad economic growth in Nepal.

Expands access to financial services:

USAID is working with many of Nepal’s financial service providers by reducing the investment risk for agro-processing, tourism and digital services sector investors. The activity promotes better information flow, the use of financial technology, and relationship building, all of which will allow creditors to lend more. USAID also supports impact investing that targets small businesses with high-growth potential, but unique financing needs.

Leverages the private sector to improve investment:

USAID listens closely to the needs of Nepali businesses, convening public and private sector stakeholders to create a policy reform plan geared towards attracting new investment and improving business practices. Facilitating dialogue ensures policymakers meet business interests in a fair and transparent manner. As Nepal transitions to “middle-income country” status, USAID supports reducing trade barriers, increasing its global competitiveness, and expanding exports to ensure Nepal’s status is sustained and improved.
