Moments in time: A walk through the old castle of Ioannina
A village within a city. Enclosed and embraced by the walls, there is a world of memories, an entire universe. For visitors, it is a refuge from the noise of the city and a destination with sights and monuments that bring the past to life in front of them. For the locals, a neighborhood where everyone knows each other, with its school, grocery store, well-kept courtyards, and low houses; with the good mornings and good evenings of a bygone, perhaps more innocent, era.
Having preserved its residential character, the Castle never evolved into a tourist attraction, even though some of Ioannina’s most important landmarks are located here, in the old town: the early-17th-century Aslan Pasha Mosque , which in addition to its central building also houses a turbe (the mausoleum of the founder’s family), a madrasa (theological school), a kitchen, and the Municipal Ethnographic Museum with its three collections – Christian, Jewish, Muslim – representing the city’s multicultural history; the Its Kale acropolis , home to the 18th-century Fethiye Mosque, the tomb of Ali Pasha , the Voimoundos Tower (one of the few remaining examples of fortifications from the Byzantine era in Ioannina), the Silversmithing Museum of the Piraeus Group Cultural Foundation, and the Byzantine Museum ; the impressive Sofarai Sarai, former site of Ali Pasha’s cavalry school and current home to G.A.K. – Historical Archive of Epirus; the Tower of Thomas near the main gate, a representative example of Byzantine period architecture, possibly constructed by the Serb ruler of the city, Thomas Preljubović; the Turkish Library and the hammam, one of the earliest Ottoman monuments in Ioannina; and, of course, the Jewish Synagogue, one of the largest and oldest surviving buildings of its kind in Greece today.
Moments in Time
Exploring the Castle’s monuments helps “structure” the past in the visitor’s eyes, bringing it closer to the present. Time is palpable everywhere in the Castle, even though you may lose track of it as you walk through its quiet alleys after the rain: at the juncture of Glykidon and Palaiologou streets or at the small and unpretentious Minoa Matsa Square where you can see Kostas Varotsos’s sculpture the “Cypress”; in the window of Spyros Gogonis’ antique shop, where every day he arranges and rearranges his wares – old bells, pulleys, pots, candleholders, a little bit of everything; in the Sunday service at the church of Aghioi Anargyroi in Its Kale – perhaps the only time of the week when you see so many of the Castle’s residents gather at its most touristy spot; in the beautiful courtyard of the Arte Povera café-restaurant , with its orange tree laden with fruit, and the cozy upstairs room at the Chevalier, where you’ll enjoy a warm cup of tea after your walks to ward off the bone-piercing humidity; finally, in the few architectural details that preserve the settlement’s traditional elements, as most of the houses in the Castle were either built after 1970, or radically reconstructed until the strict rules and framework of the urban planning decree of 1989 came into effect.
The walls built by Ali Pasha to turn the Castle into an impregnable fortress dominate the scene as you stroll by the lake under the tall plane trees. The wide moat, which was once flooded with water from the lake to strengthen the Castle’s defenses against invaders, no longer exists, having been filled in after the Liberation (1913). However, it is the impressive wall gates with their stone arches, vaulted roofs, lions (symbols of Ali’s power), and galleries, which vividly bring to life the late Ottoman period and the rule of Ali Pasha, to whom the castle owes its present form. Nitsa Syniki-Papakosta, a self-taught artist from Ioannina, made detailed sketches of each of these galleries years ago, compiled in a hard-to-find edition that is no longer in print.
There are indications and findings of the existence of a walled settlement on the rocky peninsula of the Castle dating back to the late Classical and Hellenistic periods. However, it was during the reign of Michael I Komnenos Doukas (1205-1215), the founder of the Despotate of Epirus, that members of aristocratic families settled in the Castle, seeking refuge here after the Fall of Constantinople to the Franks in 1204. Two citadels were built on the two natural elevations in its interior, surrounded by solid walls. Parts of the Byzantine fortifications that were in good condition were later preserved by Ali Pasha. Following the surrender of Ioannina to Sinan Pasha in 1430, Christians, Jews, and Muslims coexisted within the castle town until the failed uprising of Dionysius the Philosopher (or “Dog Philosopher”) in 1611 resulted in the expulsion of all Christians.
The Castle Today
Today’s Castle residents are witnessing Ioannina’s gradual transformation, as new highways and better-quality air connections provide easier and faster access to the city . New boutique guesthouses are vying for the attention of travelers, the value of land is skyrocketing, and redevelopment projects are underway to connect the northeastern acropolis with the southeastern one (Its Kale), transforming the archaeological site and the Castle into a unified monument complex accessible to people with disabilities.
“When we saw tourists in Ioannina fifteen years ago, we used to say, ‘Look guys, this is what tourists look like!’ Before the Ionian Highway was built, when we planned to travel to Athens on a Friday, we would take it easy the entire week leading up to the trip, to prepare for the long journey ahead. Things like that have shaped people’s mentality; the effects of geographic isolation do not disappear overnight,” says Paris Foukis, one of the few businessmen operating within the Castle. Hotelier George Iliadis recalls that when he welcomed his first guests in 2015, there were a total of 28 rooms in the Castle. Today, there are approximately 60 . “People from the villages would come and buy plots of land to build their houses. It was a working-class neighborhood. Just think that in the 1950s there was a farmer’s market outside the walls on Ethnikis Antistaseos Street; they even sold chickens here. Now, property is unaffordable. There is nothing for sale, but even if you do find something it costs a fortune. The Castle is the most up-and-coming area of Ioannina…”

The castle town of ioannina: an autonomous and enchanting world.
A unique place to wander through the history of a city that straddles the line between West and East

Mosques, turbans, mausoleums, madrasas. Fortifications, Byzantine towers, Ottoman hammams and kitchens. Glorious cathedrals and barracks.
The castle town of Ioannina is an autonomous, enchanting world that transports you through the history, beauty and architecture of a city that straddles the line between West and East, with its own unique history. A part of the castle town has been inhabited for centuries. Alive and vibrant , it is still home to hundreds of families and dozens of thriving businesses.
Apart from its residential area, two other places, real archaeological parks , await the visitor to discover them.
Within the outer fortified enclosure of the castle town, the two natural hills had already been formed as citadels during the Byzantine era. The southeastern acropolis is known as Its Kale and the northeastern one as the Acropolis of Aslan Pasha .
The acropolis of Its Kale
An uphill paved path leads to the acropolis of Its Kale. Passing through the imposing stone entrance, it’s like embarking on a real journey through time. Historical sources testify that during the Byzantine period, the houses of the city’s rulers were built here, along with the metropolitan church of Taxiarhes and the church of Pantokrator. During the period of Ali Pasha – a time of great economic power and glory for the city- Ali Pasha’s Serai and many military buildings for his officials were located here.

The Byzantine museum
In 1958, the Greek army built a two-storey “royal pavilion” on the ruins of the Serai, which today houses the famous Byzantine Museum of the city. An enchanting tour of the beauty, power and uniqueness of Byzantine Epirus unfolds within its halls. Ecclesiastical and secular objects take us on a journey from the 4th to the 19th century throughout Epirus. Rare ceramics guide us through the everyday life of a house in Ioannina, in the kitchen, in the dining room, in the living room. Hundreds of coins tell the economic history of a region that accumulated fabulous wealth. They tell us about the journeys of the merchants of the region, their adventures from Odessa to Vienna, their goods and their value. Ecclesiastical relics, hagiographies, altarpieces, embroidered epitaphs, vestments map the presence and power of the church throughout Byzantium. Impressive Byzantine sculptures, marble columns, Corinthian capitals, sculpted architectural elements, mainly from temples in the region of Thesprotia, testify to the level of craftsmanship and art in the region.
The neighbouring vault , which is essentially a branch of the Byzantine Museum of Ioannina, houses the collections of silversmithing objects, mainly from the collections of Archbishop Spyridon Vlahos and Konstantinos Ioannidis. The art of silversmithing, mainly during the post-Byzantine period, with its techniques and unique creations, unfolds in the halls of the treasury.

At the highest point of the Acropolis of Its Kale, the imposing building of the Fethiye mosque steals the show. According to archaeological research, a Byzantine church was built here, from which only two marble columns of its iconostasis survive. The latter were incorporated into the first mosque built in the 15th century, shortly after the city’s subjugation to the Ottomans. The building was impressive and travellers of the time described its grandeur in detail. The mosque was rebuilt in the late 18th century and Ali Pasha converted it into a mosque for his Serai.

Today the Mosque hosts an exhibition on the city of Ioannina during the late Ottoman rule and on the life and work of Ali Pasha. The visitor’s spatial experience at the Fethiye Mosque is something rare. The Mosque is a one-room structure with a high dome and a wooden balcony. Elaborate murals with plants, geometric shapes and Arabic inscriptions create a unique universe, while later interventions bear witness to the spirit of neoclassicism that prevailed in Ioannina during the late Ottoman period.
Just outside the Mosque, the tomb of Ali Pasha, with its vaulted iron railing, hosts the graves of Ali Pasha and one of his wives, recalling the role of this great statesman , who sealed with his presence the developments in the region of Epirus, but also in the whole history of the Greek uprising.

The acropolis of Aslan Pasha
The northeastern citadel of the ψastle is known as the acropolis of Aslan Pasha. On its southern side, the Byzantine gate and a circular tower that protected it in the past are preserved. This Acropolis was called Epano Goulas and here was the seat of the Despot of Ioannina, the Byzantine ruler of the city. In addition to the ruler’s palace, the church of Agios Ioannis was also located here. During the period when the city was under Ottoman rule, in 1611 an important rebellion took place, led by Dionysius the Philosopher. The rebellion was drowned in blood, the church of St. John was demolished and the Aslan Pasha mosque and its neighbouring madrasa, as the seminary was called, were built in its place. Even today, these buildings stand majestically and whisper stories of the past.

The mosque of Aslan Pasha is today the home of the Ethnographic Museum of Ioannina . Its beautiful halls host three rare collections, Greek, Jewish and Turkish, representative of the inhabitants who marked the history of the city. Prominent families have donated objects and collections, mostly from the last three centuries, which unfold the multiculturalism, prosperity and uniqueness of a city that is vibrant, thriving and flourishing. At the back of the room is the uniform of the chieftain Poutetsis, who was killed fighting for the liberation of the city. His name has even been given to a main street in the city.

The minaret of the Aslan Pasha mosque became famous when a cyclone four years ago in 2018 knocked it to the ground and caused significant damage. It was quickly restored and now stands at its height overlooking the Lake of Ioannina .

Next to the mosque, the madrasas and kitchens, also built in the early 17th century, apart from their rare beauty, are also architectural monuments and provide us with valuable information about the construction techniques and the unique craftsmen who brought the area into being. Today, the main classroom of the madrasa houses a collection of weapons, ceramics and coins, which F. Rapakousis donated to the Municipality of Ioannina.

The Old City of Ioannina
After our historical wanderings we got lost among the narrow streets with the two-storey old houses of the castle town of Ioannina. We admired the houses, met people and asked about their daily life. A quiet neighbourhood, with the walls of the castle proving able to keep out the traffic and buzz of the modern city. We made a stop at Anka Arts , at 8 Andronikos Paleologou Street, where Stavroula and Katerina, mother and daughter, make beautiful ornaments, earrings, rings, necklaces and several other works of art. “Our love of crafting brought us here to the castle town”.

“Until a few years ago I was in Athens working as a real estate agent, until I decided to come to Ioannina and find a new occupation” says Stavroula, the mother, as she shows us some of the items they make. Her daughter, Katerina, is studying at the School of Plastic Arts and Art Sciences at the University of Ioannina, and has found a space here for additional creative pursuits. We continue our walk among some completely abandoned and some recently and exquisitely restored houses. In this neighbourhood lurks another witness to the city’s history.
The Jewish Synagogue of Ioannina/ Photo: Amalia Kovaiou
The Jewish Synagogue of Ioannina, one of the largest synagogues in the country, can accommodate almost 400 worshippers. Its enclosed courtyard features a well and a fountain, while behind its arched gate there are 1,750 inscribed names. Names of people, members of the thriving Jewish community of Ioannina, who were transported in the spring of 1944 to Nazi concentration camps, where they met a tragic death. Today the community is small and the synagogue usually operates once a year.

Ioannina City lies on the western shore of Lake Pamvotis about 500 m above sea level. It is located 410 km northwest of Athens, 260 km southwest of Thessaloniki and 80 km east of Igoumenitsa port in the Ionian Sea.
The Lake of Ioannina also Pamvotida is the largest lake of Epirus, located near the central part of the Ioannina prefecture in Greece. Ioannina to the west and the town or Perama to the north are urban settlements fringing the lake while the remaining of its periphery is composed of farmland.
The lake features small fishing ports and a boating port while the island is situated in the east side of the lake. There is a regular boat service to the island ( Nisi ). Mountains lie further north and south with Mitsikeli overhanging the east part of the lake. The GR-6 surrounds the northern half of the lake.
One of the most notable attractions of Ioannina is the islet on Lake Pamvotis. The island is referred to as “Nisaki” Greek for “little island” by everyone, including its inhabitants. Passengers are ferried back and forth from the mainland to the island (about a 15-minute ride each way) on small motorboats which run on varying schedules, according to the season (about once every half hour, or more, in the spring and summer, much less frequently in the winter). Tourists can visit the monastery of Agios Panteleimon which has been converted into a museum containing information and paintings, as well as re-creations of Ali Pasha’s lounging and living quarters. Ali Pasha spent the last days of his life in St Panteleimon, waiting for a pardon from the Sultan.
The Fethiye Mosque (“Mosque of the Conquest”) is an Ottoman mosque in Ioannina. It was built in the city’s inner castle (Its Kale) immediately after the conquest by the Ottomans in 1430, near the ruins of an early 13th-century Byzantine church dedicated to the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Originally it was a wooden structure, which was replaced in 1611 by a stone building. It was extensively remodelled in 1795 by Ali Pasha, who made it the main mosque of his palace. The graves of Ali’s family and of Ali himself are located before the mosque.

Rock climbing.
Three different ascensions with different degrees of difficulty challenge your limits near the city of Ioannina.
Route 1: The first route is south east of Lake Pamvotis on the way to Drosohori and it is 11 km away from the town center. The mountain of Kastritsa is found there, which includes routes of a specific training character, as the rocks are no higher than 35-40 metres and the routes with a difficulty degree of III to VI are secure. The ascension can be conducted with safety in all seasons. Route 2: The second route is found in the Island of Lake Pamvotis exactly next to the only peripheral road of the island. This ascension is of a training character as well as there are secured routes where the degree of difficulty does not go beyond VI. The ascension can be conducted with safety throughout the year. Route 3: Finally, the last route is found about 30 kilometers on the way to Arta and the location is called Terovo. The rocks, with a height not beyond 85 meters, are made of high quality limestone. In this case, the ascension requires bigger experience as the degree of difficulty is from IV to VII and it would be better if the climbers formed groups. The ascension can be conducted all seasons of the year.

Spring in Ioannina In spring everything blooms. The trademark beauty of the natural environment of Ioannina reaches its peak. The flowers and blossoming trees make the city look like a real life painting.
Summer in Ioannina In Ioannina the summer takes on two different forms. You can choose the traditional Greek summer down the Ionian coasts at Sivota and Parga, or, if you are the adventurous type, you can find a secluded beach and camp out, where you can have the sun, sand, and the sea all to yourself!
Autumn in Ioannina If there is a season that fits Ioannina the best, it's fall because that is when the city's mystery reaches its full glory. The rain and fog around the lake is combined with a rug of fallen leaves and make the city resemble something out of another era.
Winter in Ioannina During the winter months, you can indulge with a hot coffee in the Castle or a Greek meze in a tavern by the lake, overlooking the mountains. You can take a tour of the snowy mountain of Mitsikeli, or one of the countless villages on Tzoumerka Mountains.
- Experiences
Unique cheeses, delicious pies, well- cooked fresh meat with local vegetables, traditional noodles, trachana, fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs. If you visit Ioannina and don't taste the continental cuisine, you can't claim to have really gotten to know the city. How will you be introduced to the aromas and colors of the senses and good times, if you don't try the famous wines of Zitsa and Metsovo, as well as the locally produced tsipouro.
The city of Ioannina is considered a sufficiently functional urban formation, with a modern, safe pedestrian network and a variety of options for sports and alternative activities. Pedestrians and cyclists have the ability of direct access to all important points of interest, with routes that cross or intersect the wider area of the center to the lakeside area.
In a loveable city, which has been identified with the slogan "The colors of the fest have our own light", there is never a shortage of occasions for parties and extravaganzas. Different currents of expression meet at the crossroads of joy and fun and create unforgettable moments of joy. Sounds and sights mix with the mysterious atmosphere of the landscape, bringing a flood of feelings of spiritual upliftment.
The major advantage of Ioannina is that you can see every corner of the city in a walk. You leave your car in a parking lot or you get off a bus and then everything is in front of you! Great sights, tastes, smells, images, the history of the place, parks, scenic spots, food, drink and fun. Lots of fun!
There are a lot of ideal vacation destinations, depending on the time of year you choose to travel, but it is rare to find a place that offers exceptional options all year around, like Ioannina. Here, you can lose track of time. Easy. Even if it is a three day visit or a ten day vacation, any season of the year, there is always something exciting to see and do.

Mystical Mainland (All Inclusive & Guided In-Depth Tour)
The mainland mystery tour offers a unique experience of the mainland ranging from visits to the Acropolis to small monasteries in the mountains.. Given that you’re accompanied by two local guides with extensive experience in all regions of Greece, you quickly understand and experience the culture and history of Greece. One of the guides had a Masters in European history , and was able to make ancient history come alive and become relevant to our current times. The accommodations and meals were excellent. Each hotel offered a different experience from a city hotel near the Acropolis to small mountainous resorts high in the hills. Each request whether it was for type of food, wine or cultural experience was enthusiastically received and fulfilled. After having this tour I feel I have a cultural and historical understanding of Greece that could be obtained no other way. The personalized attention of the tour guides was unsurpassed. I recommend this tour to anyone who wishes to become immersed in Greek culture, ancient and modern and experience the beauty of the mountainous region and small towns that few visitors will ever see, all surrounded by the comfort and welcoming experience created by the guides.

Secrets of Greece including Corfu (Santorini, 14 Days)
I had not finished when review was submitted ?♀️. While Nadine was nice , organized - she was not a guide. Call her the trip coordinator & I would have known what to expect. I have taken other tours where our guide us a licensed/trained guide, and that is what I was expecting. The specialists we had at specific locations were guides. The hotels were, except for one, excellent. And I understand there is little choice at Olympia, so accommodation was fine. Greatly enjoyed the trip

All said and done, Private Tours provided a great tour, and is especially lucky to have Spiros on their staff. What people love about ioannina tours.
Exceptional trip from start to finish. The gear list and pre-travel coordination was excellent, very helpful in setting expectations and making sure we had everything we needed to get going. On the trip itself our guide Alex was personable, enthusiastic & knowledgeable, always ready to teach us something about the region in specific or the country in general as well as offer advice related to the hike. The guest house accommodations were charming, with amazing food and comfortable rooms. The hiking was challenging but approachable broken up into achievable daily segments with clearly communicated levels of effort required. The views of the countryside were breathtaking throughout with the section traversing Vikos Gorge & the section from the Astraka Mountain Hut to the Dragon Lake being absolute highlights. I cannot stop showing off my pictures & bragging about going to a place before any of my friends. I would 100% consider using Trails Beyond for further trips or even re-doing this tour it was that good!

Ioannina – a beautiful gem of Northern Greece
I must sadly admit that until my trip I didn’t even know that there is a city called Ioannina in Greece. I found out about it only when doing researches how to get from Greece to Albania in the best way.
In past I just took the adventurous night bus from Thessaloniki to Berat but since this time I was going to Gjirokaster this wasn’t really an option as the bus was arriving there at 2am, in the middle of the night.
But then I found that there are pretty good connections from Ioannina to Gjirokastra and it takes only 2 hours. That’s how I’ve decided to visit Ioannina, Greece.

Where is Ioannina, Greece?
Ioannina is located in the north-west part of Greece at the shore of the Lake Pamvotis, close to the border with Albania, some 70kms away from the seaside and 400kms away from Athens, the capital of the country.
It is the capital and the biggest city of the Epirus province.
In Greek standards Ioannina isn’t a very old city.
The name was first mentioned at the end of the 9th century and since then it had a troublesome history and changed the rulers couple of times.
Eventually, in 1913, Ioannina was incorporated to Greece.
Things to do in Ioannina, Greece
To be honest there are not terribly many things to do in Ioannina but the city is pleasant enough to spend some time there.
I had a bit less than 24 hours in Ioannina and I felt I could have stayed there longer, just to enjoy the place.
I went to visit Ioannina in late summer, at the very end of September. The weather was still warm and sunny yet the city wasn’t very busy and no one seemed to hurry.
That’s definitely what I needed at the very beginning of my yet another Balkans trip .
The first place I visited was the lakeside. On the way there I passed by numerous cafes and charming lanes as well as ruins of the castle but I promised myself to come back there later.
Lake Pamvotis was amazing! So picturesque, so calm, with clear waters and surrounded by rocky mountains.
This was definitely not the holiday image we get from Greece but I admit I liked this version of this popular country a lot.
Spending time at the lakeside, sitting on the bench and looking at the landscape in front of me or just wandering around was one of my favorite things to do in Ioannina.
It was already there that I felt I really am on the holidays.
I wasn’t the only one who enjoyed the lakeside. There were people of all ages, doing the same as me – walking around or just hanging out along the promenade lined with trees.
It seemed like the lakeside is the place to be in Ioannina.
I spent most of my afternoon near the lake and only at the time of the sunset I went to the castle area.
The Ioannina castle was built in the 6th century and is the oldest Byzantine fortress in Greece.
What’s unique about the place is that the castle is still an inhabited area.
Besides the old houses, you can also find there Its Kale Acropolis with Fetiche Mosque or the Byzantine museum among many others.
While the rest of the city was vibrant the castle area was tranquil and the best place to witness the beautiful sunset.
Vibrant cafe scene in Ioannina
Ioannina is also the city of students. The center is full of numerous bars and cafes, I was actually surprised how many of them they are for the city of around 65k inhabitants.
Even if it was Thursday evening there were so many people hanging around, making the city alive until late evening hours.
Even on the next day, before noon, the cafes still seemed like a popular place among locals.
What I liked even more was that, besides charming corners perfect for Instagram pictures, there was some really decent street art around.
That definitely added up to the atmosphere of the city.
Among the bars and cafes you can find small craftsmen shops where men still use their skills.
It reminded me a bit of Bascarsija in Sarajevo where you can hear the sound of tiny hammers hitting the metal when a real masterpieces are done. And it was the same in Ioannina.
What to see around Ioannina
Ioannina can be also a perfect base to explore the interesting area around, something I didn’t do due to the lack of time.
The easiest trip is a ferry to Nisi island with couple of monasteries dating back to the 13th century – the boat departs often from the promenade.
Near Ioannina you can also find Cave of Perama, byzantine town of Arta or Pindus National Park with stunning views.
Ioannina is really worth more than just a short visit!
There are organized tours you can join in Pindus National Park, click below for more details:
- Vikos Gorge Full-Day Guided Hike
- Pindus Mountains: Dragon Lake Full-Day Guided Hike
Is it worth to visit Ioannina?
For years I was a victim of the Greek stereotype that most of the interesting places (besides Athens and Meteora ) are at the islands.
I associated Greece with the typical landscape with white houses and blue doors as that’s how we always see the country. Inland Greece seems not to exist in the tourism space really.
Now I’m actually amused when I see how stupid I was.
North Greece is very similar to the Balkans when it comes to architecture, landscape and even culture and now I know very well this is my kind of place.
I’m really glad I’ve decided to visit Ioannina as it kind of opened my eyes and now I know I really want to discover more of inland and especially northern Greece.
Don’t make my mistake and, especially if you enjoy Balkans, plan your own trip there too!
Ioannina, Greece – practical information
How to get to ioannina.
I took the bus from Thessaloniki, there are six direct departures through the day and the journey takes 3 hours and 30 minutes. I paid for the ticket around €35. You can also take the bus from Athens but it’s a long journey and will probably take most of your day. There’s also an option to fly from Athens to Ioannina.
Due to the proximity to Albania Ioannina is also connected with this neighbouring country. There are two buses per day, departing from Ioannina to Gjirokastra at 13:15 and 18:00 and the ticket is €8. It takes around 2 hours to get to the final destination, that includes the border crossing.
Where to stay in Ioannina
I stayed at Kentrikon and I can definitely recommend this place. It was within a walking distance to the center and the lakeside, my room was spacious, clean and comfy. What a nice perspective on Ioannina! Of course, Greece is so much more than islands (which I, admittedly, adore). Greece has mountains, lakes, caves, stunning villages and, ahem, ugly, built-up modern cities – as we say in Russian, Greece has everything! ???
Indeed! Unfortunately I don’t know Greece as well as I’d like to but I hope to give it more and more chances soon! I especially would love to visit the islands! Which ones would you recommend?
Great Article! An amazing writing did by you. I read your article. You explain your topic nicely. When the reader read your article, they will stay here for more time. This post really helpful and useful. It’s a great post for the traveler, those who like traveling. Finally, I would like to thanks to you for an awesome post.
I also visited there and get great experience there.
glad to hear that!
Hi there! Great read! I’m looking at visiting Ioannina on my way to Gjirokaster. You’ve said there are buses but I can seem to find any online. Will there be travel agents/bus stations where I can buy tickets from in the town?
When I visited there were at least 2 buses from Ioannina to Gjirokaster so I’m sure you will find something. When I was there I took the bus at 13:30 but there was one more at 18:00. If, for some reason, you can’t take the direct bus there are a few more connections to the border and from there you will catch another mode of transport to Gjirokaster.

Hello there, I visited Ioannina this year and i have to say that is was spectacular. Generally, you have to visit many more places and town in Greece.
I’m glad you liked Ioannina. Greece has so much to offer, I would need weeks to see all the best places there!
Thanks for the infos! I’m visiting Ioannina but only for a day. Can’t wait to check out the places which you posted too.
I hope you will enjoy Ioannina as much as I did!
Ioannina (or Giannena as most Greeks will refer to it) is indeed a very charming destination in one of the most hospitable regions of Greece, the North-West of the country that is. Different landscape, but the same Greek fun you can always depend on! Full of young people from all over Greece because of the very lively University there, superb food and a full blown night-life! A place to fall in love with or maybe to fall in love in! ; ) Only Thessaloniki can be better, but then again, I’m from there, so maybe I’m prejudiced… ; ) (I don’t think so though… ; ) PS The Ionian sea seaside isn’t very far of and the village of Parga is not to be missed! The town of Preveza and Nicopolis are also very worth your while! You’ll love them!
Thank you for your recommendations! I will try to check them out next time I’m in Greece! :) There’s still so much to see there for me!
Hi! Love your guide! ;-) Could you please tell me where this is located exactly: https://www.mywanderlust.pl/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/visit-ioannina-greece-38.jpg ? Thanks!
Hello. I can’t find the exact street name but it was somewhere in the bazaar area not far from the lake. I’m sorry I can’t help you more :(

Ioannina Island
In the middle of the lake, the reed-encircled patch of land locals just call To Nisi (The Island) is a pretty, peaceful destination, whether you just want a boat ride and a stroll on some car-free streets, or you're up for sightseeing, at the interesting little Ali Pasha Museum , the Lake Pamvotis Information Center and a fresco-bedecked Moni Filanthropinon . (The island is Greece's third-largest monastic community, after Mt Athos and Meteora). Boats leave frequently from near Plateia Mavili; the ride takes about 10 minutes.
In the 17th century, refugees from the Mani, in the Peloponnese, built the little settlement where boats arrived; about 200 people still live here. Away from this little town area, the island is a little wilder, and a walking path leads around the circumference. Traditionally, the island was a destination for a meal of fish and eels from the lake. Pollution has dampened the local appetite for these dishes, but the tanks still feature outside restaurants. The real treat is the baklava and other nut snacks hawked at a lot of the shops.
