Journey to celebrate 50th anniversary with 30 shows in 2024: See where they're headed

journey lead singer 2024 tour

Journey is continuing the celebration of its five-decade career with a run of 2024 shows.

The 50 th Anniversary Freedom Tour kicks off Feb. 9 in Biloxi, Mississippi and will play 30 dates in North America through April 29 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. local time on Sept. 29 via ticketmaster.com.

Toto, which supported Journey on their tour earlier this year to celebrate their "Freedom" album, will again join Journey founder, guitarist Neal Scho n, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, lead singer Arnel Pineda, keyboardist Jason Derlatka, drummer Deen Castronovo and bassist Todd Jensen as show openers.

Journey's tour finds the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers tearing through a set list of anthems including "Any Way You Want It," "Faithfully," "Be Good to Yourself" and, of course, "Don't Stop Believin'."

When "Freedom" arrived in July 2022, Schon told USA Today that the album title was originally tapped for the band's 1986 release, "Raised on Radio," but then-singer Steve Perry didn't like it, "so we sat on it for many years … when we were tossing around album titles said, why not just call the whole thing 'Freedom?' It's for the times right now."

Schon was also sanguine when reflecting on the band’s legacy.

"It’s quite an accomplishment and I’m very proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve gotten through emotional and personnel changes and survived," he said. "It’s pretty mind-boggling but also a lot of hard work."

by Tina Benitez-Eves September 26, 2023, 9:01 am

The 30-city Freedom Tour 2024 will kick off on February 9 in Biloxi, Mississippi, and will include stops in Calgary, Alberta, Las Vegas, Nevada, Baltimore, Maryland, Louisville, Kentucky, and other cities before wrapping up on April 29 in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Toto recently supported Journey, who was touring to support their 2022 album Freedom , the band’s first album in 11 years since the release of Eclipse .

Freedom was initially suggested as the title for Journey’s 1986 album Raised on Radio but was eventually scrapped since then-vocalist Steve Perry wasn’t keen on the word.

“Our ex-manager Herbie Herbert wanted to call the ‘Raised on Radio’ album ‘Freedom because he always came up with these one-word titles,” said Neal Schon , founding Journey guitarist and songwriter. “Steve [Perry] fought him on that and got his way, so we sat on it for many years.”

Schon continued, “When we were tossing around album titles [we] said, ‘Why not just call the whole thing Freedom?’ It’s for the times right now.”

Journey formed in San Francisco in 1973 and released their eponymous debut in 1975. Along with Schon, the band’s current lineup features longtime keyboardist and songwriter Jonathan Cain , lead singer Arnel Pineda, bassist Todd Jensen, keyboardist Jason Derlatka, and drummer Deen Castronovo.

If Journey’s previous recent setlists offer a glimpse into their forthcoming shows, the band’s set will include their hits “Faithfully,” “Be Good to Yourself,” “Any Way You Want It,” and “ Don’t Stop Believin’ ,” among others.

“We are looking forward to hitting the road again with our very good friends Toto,” said Schon in a statement. “Come join us for a special evening full of fun and rockin’ good memories.”

Cain added, “Honored to take our timeless songs on the road with another band whose songs are also timeless, Steve Lukather and Toto. It will truly be a musical evening to be remembered.”

Journey is returning to Upstate New York for another concert with Toto.

Journey announced its 2024 “Freedom” tour dates Monday, including a Feb. 22 performance at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester. Toto will open the show at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets go on sale Friday, Sept. 29, at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster .

Journey, which features Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Arnel Pineda, Jason Derlatka, Deen Castronovo and Todd Jensen, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with a Buffalo concert in March. The rock band first formed in 1973 with former Santana guitarist-vocalist Neal Schon, the only constant original member of Journey, and rose to fame with lead singer Steve Perry on hits like “Open Arms,” “Separate Ways,” “Faithfully” and “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group got its name from John Villanueva , a Camillus resident who was a drum technician for Santana at Woodstock . Villaneuva, who died in 2021, was a longtime roadie who suggested the name “Space Journey” for the band that eventually became Journey.

Toto, which is nearing its own 50th anniversary, has released 14 albums featuring hits like “Africa,” “Hold the Line” and “Rosanna.”

Journey Frontman Arnel Pineda on the Band’s New Record, Dreams of a Steve Perry Reunion

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

In early 2020, Journey frontman Arnel Pineda flew back to his native Manila after playing a corporate gig in Texas. He was gearing up for a big year in which Journey would cut their first new record since 2011’s Eclipse and play amphitheaters all over North America with the Pretenders.

The pandemic changed all that and he’s been in Manila ever since, but Journey still found a way to work remotely on the record. It’s their first full-length since parting ways with drummer Steve Smith and bassist Ross Valory. They were replaced by bassist Randy Jackson (who briefly toured and recorded with Journey in 1986–87) and drummer Narada Michael Walden, who’s doubling as the album’s producer.

We checked in with Pineda via Zoom to talk about his lockdown life in Manila, the in-progress Journey record, the upcoming biopic about his life, and why he still dreams about a Journey reunion with Steve Perry.

How are things going? Good. I arrived here in Manila last year just a week and a half before the lockdown began. I was lucky. Otherwise, I would have been stuck in America for six months before they let me back.

This must be the longest stretch of time you’ve been home since you joined Journey in 2007. Yeah. This is the longest. I like it because I got to spend a lot of time with family and the kids and more time with myself and my wife. There are other things I would rather do than tour, so I got the chance to be here. In a negative way, it’s quite bad. The survival here is a day-to-day deal. I’m the one that goes out a lot. I’m the one that goes to the market and the grocery to refill our food stocks.

You wonder if you have the virus every day. There’s a lot of paranoia going around. It’s like what is happening in America.

Do you miss playing live? Yeah. I especially miss the energy and the adrenaline of doing it. I’m delivering on the legacy that the Voice [Steve Perry] has left behind. Especially now that he formally passed the torch to me in 2017 [at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction], he made that known and he was very gracious. It was very kind of him. It was so generous of him to say that in public. It was really an honor.

What was it like to finally meet Steve after all these years? I posted on Instagram that I had waited 35 years for that. It was dreamy. I couldn’t believe I met him since he’s very reclusive and he avoids people. He didn’t want to get interviewed, at least until he released his new record [ Traces ] and then suddenly he was out there, going to radio stations and accepting interviews.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

I was really surprised that he agreed to meet me. It’s one of the most special things that happened in my life. He’s one of my heroes when it comes to singing. I remember back in the Eighties, I would sleep on the bus with my Walkman on in my ears as his voice sang all these favorite songs from Journey.

I really dug his new record. It was amazing. I’ve been teasing Jonathan [Cain] and Neal [Schon]. “Why don’t you invite Steve Perry over for a tour?” Oh, my God. I never saw them back in the Eighties. I was just a young kid in Manila, just playing around, with no chance of going to the States and seeing their show, but they were one of my favorite bands.

I’ve spoken to Steve a bunch of times in the past few years. We even talked just a few weeks ago. Oh, my God!

Judging by our talks, I’m extremely confident that he’s happy to leave the Journey baton with you. That’s even more pressure I’m getting, hearing this from you. At the same time, I’m truly honored. But I’m not losing [the hope] that one day he’ll join the band for two or three songs. It would be one of the highlights of my life if that happens.

It would almost be on the scale of Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd re-forming at this point. My God. It would be the same thing for me with Led Zeppelin because I haven’t seen them either, or Pink Floyd. I wish they would be complete again. It’s like completing a circle, being back up onstage again.

Do you think this long break has been good for your singing voice? Has it given you time to rest the muscle? I think so. At the same time, I can’t help but sing four or five songs here every day. The problem with the voice is that it changes as you grow older. It’s like athletes. They reach their peak on their 30th birthday. As they approach 31 or 32, it starts to change. It’s the same with my voice. I just want to make sure I can be of use to the band until they decide to throw the towel in.

Those are hard songs to sing for any singer. You guys go out and do 60 straight concerts in the summer and you need to hit the high notes on “Faithfully” every single time. That would be hard for anyone at any age. We’ll do five or six shows a week. I’m just quite amazed with myself a little. Somehow I was able to take it for 13 years. Let’s see what’s going to happen in the coming days. We’re on to finishing the album. We finished six songs so far. There’s talk of going out somewhere first, maybe Las Vegas for a residency. We don’t know yet. We haven’t decided. Just to break the ice between the new members and us.

You have six songs totally done? Yeah. And maybe seven songs to go.

Steve Perry Signs to New Label, Contemplates Solo Tour: 'I Miss It Terribly'

Hear the journey tune steve perry rerecorded with steve lukather's son.

Are these ballads? Rockers? For now, we’re doing the rocker songs first, not the ballads. I think the seven songs they’re working on, they’re working on something huge, like how you’ve known Journey doing ballads. It’s between [1981’s ] “Mother, Father” and [1978’s] “Winds of March.” We’re working on that song. We’ll see what happens. I’m waiting for them to send me the demos so that we can record it next week.

Working remotely like this must have been an adjustment. Normally, you’d be in the room together. I know. It’s quite hard right now. I have a few melody ideas that I’m into and want to share with them, but you can’t right now because of what is happening. I just have to listen to it and learn it. We use Zoom to record and I turn on my laptop and go into Logic Pro. They get ahold of it. If there’s something I want to change, I tell them. But it’s all pretty much done and I just record with them.

Are you doing the vocals on your laptop? Yeah. I’ll show you [ turns camera around and shows a microphone plugged into a computer in front of soundproofing foam ]. I share my computer, like mirroring. They can see what’s happening in my laptop. It allows them to hack it for a moment and then they can hear it. It happens in real time.

There’s no lag. I can hear that right now while we talk. It’s like you’re in the next room and you’re actually more than 8,000 miles away. Yeah. Thank God for the technology.

Do you think the album will come out this year? I think so. Neal thinks so. He can’t wait to release it before we do a full-on tour.

How do things sound different now that Randy Jackson and Narada Michael Walden are in the band? It’s somewhat like the sound back in the Eighties when Randy Jackson joined the band for the Raised on Radio album. It’s kind of like that, but it’s also more updated. Narada is producing my vocals and mentoring me on how to do it. He’s telling me to sing it this way and that way. It’s amazing. I’m learning a lot from Narada. It’s truly an honor and I appreciate him for doing so. It’s amazing.

Has the band even been in the same room yet? Have you met Randy and Narada in person? Right now, it’s just been virtual. It’s tough. I wanted to do it. I keep telling Neal, “If only I had been there, we would have done this in two months. Sorry it’s taking so long.” But with all these health protocols where you need to quarantine for two weeks, and then I come back and I’d be quarantined for another two weeks before I can join my family. It’s too much of a hassle, so we decided to do it this way even though Neal isn’t too happy about it. He wants it the old, classic way of making an album.

Moving on here, what’s the status of the movie about your life? It’s going to happen. I think they’re gonna start. Some people from Warner will start coming here. I think maybe with [ Crazy Rich Asians director] Jon Chu and [ Joker and The Fighter screenwriter] Scott Silver. They might come here to audition actors and actresses that will take part in my biopic.

Are you going to take them around town and show them the places you grew up? Yes. That’s the deal, of course. I want to show them where I grew up, where I was born, where everything happened before this whole magical thing.

Do you think the story will start in your childhood and show all your early bands and struggles and focus on the pre-Journey period? I think so, yeah. That’s the plan. I’ve spoken many times with Scott Silver. What’s interesting about my story is that I’ve survived two coup attempts here in the Philippines before I went to Hong Kong for 10 years. I don’t know he if plans to tell what happened to me in Hong Kong, but I had 10 years there. He might focus on my love story with my wife now.

I can see the grand finale in my head. It’ll be you walking onstage in Chile at your first Journey show. You’re nervous and they push you out and you burst into “Separate Ways.” Yeah. I was trying to back out five minutes before. I was like, “Neal, I cannot do this. This is not built for me.” They were like, “No. It’s too late. Get out there and do it.”

It was the turning point of your life. Everything is either before that moment or after that moment. You should tell Scott Silver about this idea. I’ve been implying it to him that we should end everything in Chile. And I remember when my wife decided to join me on tour in 2011. We were playing to a 30,000 crowd that night. I was telling my wife, “Remember Hard Rock Cafe when there were only three tables? Now it’s 30,000 people.” It was just unbelievable. It doesn’t get old to me. It’s still so surreal and bizarre.

I saw you at Citi Field with Fleetwood Mac and Madison Square Garden with Def Leppard. I could tell you were still having a blast. It’s still unbelievable. I’m just so blessed. I can’t thank them enough, especially Neal Schon. He was the one that was really sold that I am the one since 2007. But then again, I still think, “If only they could bring back Steve Perry.” You know what I mean?

I do, but if he came back, that would mean … I know, but I miss them so much together. Every now and then, I watch their videos together. It’s always them with Steve Perry that I watch. I mean, no offense to Adam Lambert. He’s an amazing performer and he has an amazing voice, but I still watch the old [Queen] ones with Freddie Mercury. That’s why when people say things like “No Perry, No Journey,” I understand it. Where I come from, we’re so influenced by Western music. We loved the originals, if you know what I mean.

His return would put you out of a job. That would be OK to me! I’m telling you. That’s how much I adore him and I adore Journey and how much I adore Steve Perry. Back in 2005, I resigned from my job in Hong Kong because I lost my voice due to acid reflux. I was telling my friends back then that my only regret was I lost my voice before I had the chance to sing side-by-side with Steve Perry. I was joking with them, but then a different situation happened. I just wish that one show with him … it would change my life forever. It’s been 30 years now and the band keeps changing my life in ways nobody would ever guess would happen.

Do you miss Ross Valory and Steve Smith now that they’re out of the band? I do, of course. We had a real bond that nobody can deny. [ Sighs ] When the first day came that Steve Smith went back, I could feel that he was trying to feel everything out and observe. When he got the good vibe again, we clicked. Four years with him was very special. And 11 years with Ross was amazing. I cannot ask for anything more. Those friendships I’ll take with me until the end of time.

The group has dealt with a lot of tensions and feuds during your time with them, but you always remain neutral and out of the fray. How do you do that? I try to stay away. It’s like, “Oh, the big boys are fighting.” I’d rather stick to my guns, which is just singing and delivering the legacy with them onstage. When we’re up onstage, I think everyone forgets their differences behind the scenes. That’s my happy place. When they’re having some petty quarrels, I try to stay away. I talk to everybody without having to talk about their differences.

Your White House visit caused a bit of controversy. Do you have any regrets about going there and meeting Trump? I do not. As a Filipino, I am such a big fan of the White House. It’s not about Trump. It’s not about who the president is. It’s the whole history of the White House. I was just amazed. When I went there, I looked at all the pictures of past presidents and how old everything was. And then the table where President Trump was seated was about 100 years old. Who wouldn’t want to see that? Who wouldn’t want to touch that?

His presidential guard was laughing at me because President Trump was talking to the other members [of the band] and I was just mesmerized by the table. I was like, “Wow! This is truly 100 years old?” I’m just a kid from Manila and I was in the White House for the first time, so no regrets. I guess I didn’t even have a chance to apologize to Neal. He must understand. I’m just a kid from Manila that wants to see the White House, in general.

What’s the status of your next solo record? I’m doing it right now. I’m just waiting on a couple of friends that are helping me finish it from the States. Because of the recent banning of some countries from coming in here, we got delayed. I’m expecting them to arrive here at the end of March instead of the end of January. Even my online streaming concert was moved to April 18th. It was supposed to happen in February. To those who want to get a ticket, it’ll be at sanrestreaming.com .

Back to the movie, do you think being on set and watching someone play a younger version of you will be a surreal experience? It will be weird, but it’ll be weirder if I am there portraying myself! [ Laughs ] I will not be able to stand there and look at myself. I don’t really listen to myself singing either. When the documentary Everyman’s Journey came out, I could barely watch it. The premier was in Tribeca. I was like, “Do I really have to watch this and see myself on the big screen?” I was cringing.

Do you think the actor in the movie will actually sing, or will you provide the vocals? I think I’m going to use my voice. Do you remember the Queen movie [ Bohemian Rhapsody ]? Marc Martel did the voice. I think I’m going to do that too.

I can’t wait. Crazy Rich Asians is a great movie. Jon Chu really knows what he’s doing. It’s unbelievable that he took notice of my life and my story and wants to make a movie out of it. It really humbled me.

They should film it in Manila and not somewhere else. It should look authentic. They definitely will. There’s so much to remember, I’m telling you. At one point in my life, I was really on drugs. It quite affected my memory. I need to recover all those things that happened to me when I was young. But I’ve recovered a lot of my childhood memories. Scott Silver is quite happy with what I was able to tell him.

I’m very hopeful that before 2021 ends, you’ll be back onstage with Journey. Me too. I can’t wait to see those smiling faces and that rolling-thunder sound of the audience. It’s quite an adrenaline [rush] when you experience that every night. That’s what keeps you going.

Music | four-alarm fire burns lumber yard in oakland, music | review: journey is good, but this opening act is much better, toto tops journey in concert at chase center in san francisco.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 31: Toto lead singer Joseph Williams, left, and guitarist Steve Lukather perform in concert at Chase Center in San Francisco, Calif., on Thursday, March 31, 2022. (Ray Chavez/Bay Area News Group)

Sure, the hometown headliners were good, delivering remarkably faithful renditions of many of the hits from the group’s recording heyday of late ’70s and first half of the ’80s — despite now missing a number of the key players from that time period.

Yet, the opening act was nothing short of a revelation, wowing Journey fans — many of whom walked in only knowing the big Toto hits “Rosanna” and (in part due to Weezer) “Africa” — with a fully engaging set built from superb songs and even better musicianship.

The whole arena was abuzz between the two bands’ sets and you could hear Journey fans muttering in astonishment about how great Toto was onstage and the number of good songs the band delivered in its set.

In other words, if you decided to skip seeing the opener in order to avoid traffic on Thursday night, you definitely made the wrong decision.

Hopefully fans won’t make that mistake when the potent doubleheader checks into the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento on April 1. (And, no, this is not some elaborate April Fools joke — Toto actually was that good.) For ticket information, visit golden1center.com .

Toto wasn’t even originally supposed to be at this show. Billy Idol was the scheduled opener when ducats originally went on sale back in November. But then Idol withdrew from the tour, reportedly due to the need to get sinus surgery, and Toto moved into the opening slot for both the Chase and Golden 1 dates. (Toto was already set to open the second half of Journey’s Freedom Tour.)

journey lead singer 2024 tour

Toto kicked off the show in relatively recent territory, performing a head-turning take on “Orphan” — from “Toto XIV” — that served to announce that concertgoers were in for a treat. The seven-piece band was in superb form, led by the mighty guitar work of Steve Lukather — Toto’s sole continuous touring member.

Toto then zoomed back to the beginning as it touched upon its best single — the rocking “Hold the Line” — from its 1978 self-titled debut. It would later return to that same album, and find similar success, with a funkified take on “Georgy Porgy.”

The pure musicianship was extraordinary, with the blazing Lukather joined by bassist John Pierce, drummer Robert “Sput” Searight, keyboardists Steve Maggiora and Dominique “Xavier” Taplin, and multi-instrumentalist Warren Ham. Joseph Williams — son of film composer John Williams and actress Barbara Ruick — was a mighty force on vocals, as he has been since joining the band in the mid-’80s.

Toto included a phenomenal cover of the Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends,” which was more Joe Cocker than Ringo Starr, but unfortunately left out its rendition of Weezer’s “Hash Pipe” (done in tribute to the alt-rock troupe famously covering “Africa”). The band closed the show with its two best-known songs — “Rosanna” and “Africa” — which resulted in mammoth sing-alongs in the crowd.

journey lead singer 2024 tour

Journey opened its set with “Only the Young,” one of four numbers the band would perform from its 1983 offering “Frontiers.” In all, the group delivered 19 songs, with more than a third of them coming from its jam-packed seventh studio album — 1981’s “Escape.”

It was pretty much hit after hit after hit, yet the music didn’t sound nearly as vibrant — and definitely not as urgent — as what Toto delivered. That certainly wasn’t the fault of Neal Schon — the band’s only constant member — who was an absolute master on guitar, filling nearly every song with leads that impressed both with feel and technical ability.

I could listen to him play all day long. He’s the best part of Journey — musically speaking — and always has been.

Vocalist Arnel Pineda was an energetic front man, racing back and forth across the relatively simple stage setup and coaxing the crowd to respond to such songs as “Send Her My Love” and “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin'” with even more energy.

The music sounded remarkably like what you hear on record, despite the absence of Steve Perry, Steve Smith, Ross Valory and so many others. Yet, it rarely felt bigger or better than that — which is really what you hope for when you go see a band in concert.

Still, fans certainly acted like they felt they got their money’s worth — and then some — as Journey brought the evening to a close with such longtime favorites as “Wheel in the Sky” and “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart).”

Doug Ingle, the last surviving member of the original line-up of heavy rock band Iron Butterfly, has died aged 78.

Ingle was the lead vocalist and organist in the band he co-founded in 1966 - singing their 17-minute long signature hit In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, which featured in a 1995 episode of The Simpsons .

The musician's son announced his father's passing on social media but did not give a cause of death.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida featured on Iron Butterfly's 1968 album of the same name, which spent 81 weeks in the top 10 in the US.

The record was eventually certified quadruple-platinum, meaning it sold at least 400,000 copies.

The title track became legendary and something of a running joke in rock circles, with its length meaning late-night disc jockeys could put it on while going for a cigarette or toilet break.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is a slurred version of "in the Garden of Eden" - as allegedly misheard by the band's drummer Ron Bushy when Ingle was first presenting the song to the band.

In The Simpsons episode Bart Sells His Soul, the skateboarding mischief-maker sneaks a version of the song into his church's worship service under the title "In The Garden Of Eden".

"Hey, Marge, remember when we used to make out to this hymn?" Homer whispers in the episode.

The song was also covered by other bands, including Slayer, The Residents, Boney M and the Incredible Bongo Band, whose version was twice-sampled by the rapper Nas. It also appeared memorably in Michael Mann's 1986 thriller movie Manhunter.

The track ended up being 17 minutes long partly due to Iron Butterfly's studio engineer Don Casale asking the band to play through the song so he could set his levels and him hitting record without the band members realising.

The extended practice run ended up being the master take.

Ingle's son, Doug Ingle Jr, said in a statement confirming his father's death: "It's with a heavy heart and great sadness to announce the passing of my father Doug Ingle.

"Dad passed away peacefully this evening in the presence of family. Thank you dad for being a father, teacher and friend. Cherished loving memories I will carry the rest of my days moving forward in this journey of life. Love you Dad."

Ingle was the last-surviving member of the original line-up of the band, following the deaths of guitarist Erik Brann in 2003, bassist Lee Dornan in 2012 and drummer Ron Bushy in 2021.

Dozens of musicians have been part of the group in its various incarnations over the decades.

Doug Ingle, who co-founded the heavy rock band Iron Butterfly and was the singer and organist on songs including their signature hit, “In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida,” died Friday at age 78. He was the last surviving member of the classic lineup from the late 1960s.

Most of Iron Butterfly’s success came with the 17-minute FM radio smash “In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida.” The 1968 sophomore album named after the hit single spent 81 weeks in the top 10 in the U.S.; for a while it stood as the bestselling album in Atlantic Records’ history. The LP went on to be certified quadruple-platinum.

Popular on Variety

An edit of “In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida” that lasted only two minutes and 52 seconds went up the charts to land at No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100, although that is little indication of just how thoroughly the song infiltrated the culture. It was the 17-minute album track that became legendary — and something of an affectionate running joke in rock circles, as either a symbol of excessive length or just something a late-night FM disc jockey could put a needle down on for a smoking or bathroom break.

Beyond the epic length, the biggest piece of lore surrounding the song had to do with its willfully silly title, which was basically a slurred version of “in the garden of eden,” as allegedly misheard by drummer Ron Bushy when Ingle was first presenting the song to the band.

Besides being covered by Bart Simpson’s church congregation, “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” was covered by Slayer (on the soundtrack for the film “Less Than Zero”), the Residents, Boney M and the Incredible Bongo Band, whose version was twice-sampled by the rapper Nas. It also appeared memorably in Michael Mann’s thriller “Manhunter.”

Part of the reason the track ended up being 17 minutes long is that, when Iron Butterly arrived at the recording studio, engineer Don Casale asked the group to play through the song so he could set his levels. They jammed through the extended version heard on LP as a practice run, unaware that Casale had hit “record”; that epic jam, of course, ended up being the master take.

Iron Butterfly has not remained as ubiquitous a name in counterculture nostalgia as other groups of its era have, partly because the group broke up rather soon after its biggest successes — in 1971 — and did not enjoy the extended reunions that some others did.

But Ingle did take part in a short reunion in the late ’70s, two more in the 1980s and, finally, a longer stint in the late 1990s, which ended when Ingle retired from performing altogether in 1999.

Among the other band members from the classic “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” era of the band, guitarist Erik Brann died in 2003, bassist Lee Dornan in 2012 and drummer Ron Bushy in 2021.

A Wikipedia entry for the group lists 60 musicians who have been part of the group in its various incarnations over the decades — on top of the four musicians who tour as Iron Butterfly today, none of whom go further back with the band than 1995.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times in 1995, when the group was beginning a reunion tour, Ingle talked about his regrets about how things had gone down with the group in the ’70s, with plenty of problems brought about by debt.

“It all came so fast and easy,” Ingle told the Times, describing how he had become a multi-millionaire in his early 20s, then got hit hard by unpaid tax debt and lost a 600-acre ranch, apartment building and even his grand piano, before he resolved his tax problems in 1986.

“I was a child among men,” said Ingle, looking back at 48. “I was dealing with people who were competent but not necessarily (working) in my interest. I took the luxury of playing ostrich. I didn’t involve myself at the business level at all. I just went out and performed. It was, ‘Isn’t life great?’ Then everything crashed down. I still maintain life is great, but now I base it on something (real) rather than wishful thinking.”

Check More About Singer IU

Lee Ji-eun, known by her stage name IU, is a prominent South Korean singer-songwriter and actress. She began her journey in the entertainment industry by signing with LOEN Entertainment (now Kakao Entertainment) in 2007 as a trainee. At just fifteen years old, IU made her debut as a singer with her first extended play (EP) titled Lost and Found in 2008.

While her initial albums, Growing Up and IU...IM, laid the groundwork for her career, it was the release of "Good Day," the lead single from her 2010 album Real, that catapulted her to national stardom. "Good Day" not only topped South Korea's Gaon Digital Chart for an impressive five weeks straight but also secured its place in history by being ranked number one on Billboard's "100 Greatest K-Pop Songs of the 2010s" list in 2019. IU's meteoric rise since then has solidified her as one of the most influential and beloved figures in Korean popular music.

Starmus 2024: Scientists and musicians unite in Bratislava to celebrate planet Earth

Starmus is an ambitious festival where science and art come together to share in the wonders of our universe. I loved every minute of it.

Starmus festival opening concert, Bratislava, Slovakia, 2024.

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia — The Starmus International Festival is a one-stop shop for science enthusiasts around the world. After a week of inspiring and thought-provoking lectures from a star-studded group of scientists and former astronauts coupled with performances by talented musicians, Starmus exceeded all expectations.

Starmus combines art, music, and science to elevate science communication and "engage humanity in the biggest questions of our time," as stated by the organizers . This year's festival, themed "The future of our home planet," gathered more than 50 prominent experts in climate change , environmental science, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity in Bratislava, Slovakia, for an extensive multi-day event from May 12 to May 17, 2024.

The star-packed lineup included Nobel Prize winners Michel Mayor , Emmanuelle Charpentier and Kip Thorne , astronauts Charlie Duke, Chris Hadfield , Kathryn Thornton, Garrett Reisman and legendary primatologist and anthropologist Jane Goodall.

I was fortunate enough to head to Bratislava and experience the festival for the first time. It did not disappoint.

The festival began with an epic live performance from electronic music pioneer Jean Michel Jarre featuring legendary Queen guitarist Brian May . You needed 360-degree vision to experience everything the concert had to offer fullyFrom futuristic laser light and drone shows to wild pyrotechnics and captivating visual graphics, all paired together with a legendary Jean Michel Jarre soundtrack.

The following day Jane Goodall inaugurated the festival with an emotional speech about our beautiful blue planet and the preciousness of life. She stressed the importance of hope while also calling for action to mitigate the irreversible damage we are causing.

Goodall was followed by world-renowned scientists, researchers and former astronauts, each bringing their unique views and insights on the little blue marble we call home.

I was deeply inspired by the world-renowned oceanographer Sylvia Earle and her presentation on our vast oceans and the life dwelling in the deep. Over her 50-year career, Earle has spent thousands of hours underwater and published over 100 scientific papers . Notably, she was the first woman to serve as chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Her dedication to the oceans and her ability to convey their marvels is truly commendable. Earle illustrated the wonders of the oceans and emphasized how much we still have to learn about some of the deepest parts of our own planet.

While previous incarnations of the festival focussed on looking out to the worlds beyond ours, this year's Starmus was unique in that its primary focus was planet Earth . But as Earle rightly pointed out "Earth is part of space, it just happens to be here."

two people stand on stage and smile, the one on the left is holding an award.

On Day 3 of the festival, I was delighted to watch Earle receive the Stephen Hawking Medal of Science Communication alongside three other recipients, artist Laurie Anderson, Filmmaker Christopher Nolan and presenter and author Sir David Attenborough at an award ceremony that evening. The Stephen Hawking medal is awarded to individuals and teams who have made significant contributions to science communication across four categories: Music & Arts, Science Writing, Films & Entertainment, and Lifetime Achievement.

Hosted by comedian and writer Robin Ince, the Stephen Hawking Medal Ceremony also featured performances from Tony Hadley former lead singer of Spandau Ballet, keyboardist and composer Rick Wakeman and astrophysicist and former Queen guitarist Brian May to name but a few. The night was topped off by an energetic and entertaining set from the iconic punk-rock band The Offspring.

At the mid-way point of the Starmus Earth festival, an epic 'star party' was held within the towering ruins of Devin Castle. That night guests mingled amongst exquisite food, music and of course, telescopes!

From our nearest neighbor, the moon , to stunning nebulas and galaxies 11 million light-years away, we could explore the cosmos high on a hill in the beautiful Slovakian countryside. My favorite observation target was M57, also known as the Ring Nebula.  A colorful jewel in the night sky , the ring nebula dazzled with delicate blues, oranges and reds.

The focus of the second half of the week shifted more from environmental and Earth science to the future of AI and space exploration.

Former Canadian Space Agency astronaut Chris Hadfield presented an enlightening presentation on space junk and how we are trying to solve the debris problem, and was later followed by former NASA astronaut Garrett Wiseman who spoke about SpaceX and the strides it is taking in human spaceflight, with sights firmly set on the moon and then to Mars .

A man stands holding a microphone in one hand in front of a large display with the words starmus earth written in large letters.

Astrophysicist Martin Rees took a different view from Wiseman, presenting his talk "Post-human Intelligence — A Cosmic Perspective" via a video link. Rees emphasized the importance of leaving human spaceflight to adrenaline-seeking private astronauts and using government organizations such as NASA and ESA to focus solely on robotic exploration.

Last but not least we were taken on a journey through time with physicist Brian Greene, who used captivating graphics and visual imagery to transport us through the cosmos and into the distant future in his talk titled "Until the End of Time".

Alongside the main festival, the Starmus Camp and City Program brought science and music to the streets, featuring morning talks, presentations, and screenings in the heart of Bratislava at Hlavné námestie, the city's main square. The event included twelve booths with science exhibitions, as well as presentations, panel discussions, and a music program, all accessible to the general public for free.
