Junior golf rankings guidelines, share this page.
In order for junior tournaments to be considered to be included in the Golfweek Junior rankings database the following conditions are recommended:
• In order to be considered, a boy’s field must have minimum of 40 boys start the event and a girl’s field must have 12 girls start the event.
• The event should be considered a regional tournament if not a national tournament.
• 54-hole events are desired. However, 36-hole events will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If an event is reduced due to inclement weather, it will still count in the database provided that the entire field completes 18 holes.
• The rankings will only count the oldest age division unless all players play from the same tees and the fields can be combined to create one event.
• Golfweek reserves the right to add and drop tournaments at any time.

The Junior PLAYERS Championship presented by Rolex returns to TPC Sawgrass
By hailey hernandez, august 31, 2022.
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The 16th edition of The Junior PLAYERS Championship will take place September 1-4 at TPC Sawgrass, the home of The PLAYERS Championship.
Thanks to a longtime partnership between the PGA TOUR and the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA), 78 of the world's top-ranked male junior golfers, invited through the Rolex AJGA Rankings, will compete in a 54-hole, stroke-play event mirroring THE PLAYERS Championship setup, hole locations, and three-hole aggregate playoff format. Rolex also added support in 2022 becoming a presenting partner.
About The Junior PLAYERS Championship Field Representatives from a record-high 14 foreign countries and 18 U.S. states (seven from Florida) are set to compete in one of the AJGA’s annual top boys fields, featuring seven of the top 10 boys in the Rolex AJGA Rankings.
Of the 78 boys competing, 42 players are signed or verbally committed to play college golf. There are 11 sets of future college teammates in the field led by Stanford with four and the University of Oklahoma with three players committed.
Top Players to Watch
Eric Lee of Fullerton, California, enters the week as the top-ranked player in the field at No. 2 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings. The 2023 grad has been on an impressive stretch of golf this season, starting with a win at the 2021 Rolex Tournament of Champions last November. Lee has yet to finish outside the top 10 this year in five nationally ranked junior golf events. The University of California, Berkeley commit was also named a member of the U.S. Team for the upcoming Junior Presidents Cup.

Nicholas Gross of Downington, Pennsylvania, holds the No. 3 spot in the Rolex AJGA Rankings entering the week. The 2024 grad won the 2021 AJGA Junior All-Star Invitational presented by adidas Golf last October and has continued his success at the next level. Gross has eight top-10 finishes in national junior golf events this season and became the youngest player to advance to the U.S. Amateur quarterfinals since 2007 in August. He was also named to the U.S. Team for the Junior Presidents Cup.

Henry Guan of Dallas, Texas, is the top-ranked player in the field from the class of 2026. Guan is one of four incoming high school freshmen in the field. Another member of the U.S. Team for the Junior Presidents Cup, Guan is making his debut at The Junior PLAYERS Championship presented by Rolex. Guan has one Invitational victory this year - as the youngest player in the field he won the Wyndham Invitational presented by Truist, another PGA TOUR-style event.

TPC Sawgrass has hosted the iconic event each year except in 2016 (Sawgrass Country Club) during extensive renovations on THE PLAYERS Stadium Course. From 2011-2013, the first two rounds were played on Dye’s Valley with the final round on THE PLAYERS Stadium Course.
Now-PGA TOUR alum Morgan Hoffman won the inaugural The Junior PLAYERS Championship in 2007. Hoffmann’s junior golf career featured five AJGA victories, including four Invitationals, and a selection as Rolex Junior All-American.
The lowest round in the history of the Junior PLAYERS Championship was set by Logan McCallister of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in the second round of the 2017 tournament at 9-under-par 63. McCallister ultimately tied for second after a three-hole aggregate playoff with Shuai Ming (Ben) Wong of (Hong Kong) The Woodlands, Texas, and Jake Beber-Frankel of Miami. Wong secured his first AJGA Invitational victory with a par on No. 18, the final playoff hole.
Gavin Hall of Pittsford, New York, set the low 36-hole total at 8-under-par 136 on his way to winning the 2011 tournament at 5-under-par 211.
The low 54-hole total of 8-under-par 208 at TPC Sawgrass was shared in 2018 by Travis Vick of Houston, Akshay Bhatia of Wake Forest, North Carolina, and Bo Jin of (China) Encinitas, California. The ensuing sudden-death playoff began on No. 18, where Jin chipped in for birdie and Vick buried a 12-footer to move on to No. 16. Jin found trouble off the tee, while Vick hit the fairway and two-putted for birdie and the win. Ben James also tied the low 54-hole total on his way to victory at the 2021 event.

Graduation to THE PLAYERS Championship
The AJGA has a storied history of junior, amateur, college and professional success and The Junior PLAYERS Championship showcases an impressive list of 45 alumni who graduated to the PGA TOUR stage.
Major winner and AJGA tournament host Justin Thomas made history at the 2021 PLAYERS Championship when he became the first The Junior PLAYERS Championship alumni to win the professional event. Thomas won the tournament by one stroke at 14-under-par 274.
Moment captured. 🏆 pic.twitter.com/Fqr5hYVTyM — THE PLAYERS (@THEPLAYERSChamp) March 14, 2021
Thomas, a two-time Rolex Junior All-American as a junior golfer, has hosted his own AJGA tournament since 2016 and spends time on-site hitting shots with sponsors and sharing advice with juniors. He also supports kids who need a financial boost to play through his ACE Grant endowment.
He led the contingent of 31 The Junior PLAYERS Championship alumni to compete in the 2022 PLAYERS championship. Thomas competed twice at TPC Sawgrass as a junior ( 2008 and 2009 ).

International Exposure
Since the tournament's inception, international players from every corner of the globe gather to test their skills against top players from the U.S.
In 2019, Jayden Schaper of South Africa, played in his third The Junior PLAYERS Championship and won, becoming the fifth champion with international ties. The 2020 grad carried that momentum into the 2020 European Tour's South African Open where he finished T6 and became the first amateur to finish in the top-six since Ernie Els in 1989.
In this year's event, there are five players from the Junior Presidents Cup International Team competing.

Vilips finished T8 at this week’s NCAA Championship and jumped from No. 14 to No. 10, while Keefer rose from No. 29 to No. 25 with a T11 finish this week.

Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray died Saturday morning at age 30, one day after he withdrew from the Charles Schwab Cup Challenge at Colonial.
There were no immediate details on the circumstances of his death, only shock and grief from the PGA Tour and his management team.
“I am at a loss for words,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said. “The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”
His management company, GSE Worldwide, confirmed the death and said it was heartbroken.
“We will hold off on commenting until we learn further details, but our heart aches for his family, his friends and all who loved him during this very difficult time,” GSE said in a statement.
Monahan said he spoke with Murray’s parents to offer condolences, and they asked that the tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, continue.
He said grief counselors would be on site at the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour event in Knoxville, Tennessee. Monahan headed to Texas and later appeared on CBS as the third round was ending.
“To see the devastation on the faces of every player coming in is really difficult to see and really just profound,” Monahan said. “Grayson was a remarkable player, but he was a very courageous man. I’ve always loved that about him.”
Murray, who had dealt with alcohol and mental health issues in the past, made a massive turnaround this year and won the Sony Open , hitting wedge to 3 feet for birdie on the final hole to get into a playoff and winning it with a 40-foot putt.
He also won the Barbasol Championship in 2017.
“It was a huge shock. My heart sank,” said Webb Simpson, who learned of Murray’s death shortly before teeing off at Colonial. He said Murray was the first winner of his junior tournament and they shared the same swing coach as juniors.
“I just hate it so much,” Simpson said. “I’m going to miss him. I’m thankful he was in the place with his faith before this morning happened.”
Murray was No. 58 in the world rankings coming off a tie for 43rd in the PGA Championship last week at Valhalla. He also made the cut in his Masters debut, finishing 51st, and was in the field for the U.S. Open next month at Pinehurst No. 2.
Murray, who grew up in North Carolina, was among the most talented juniors in the country. He won the prestigious Junior World Championship in San Diego three straight years and earned the Arnold Palmer Scholarship at Wake Forest.
He wound up going to three colleges, lastly at Arizona State, and won as a 22-year-old PGA Tour rookie at the Barbasol Championship.
Murray said in January that he had been sober for eight months, was engaged to be married, had become a Christian and felt his best golf was ahead of him. He was appointed to the 16-member Player Advisory Council.
“My story is not finished. I think it’s just beginning,” Murray said in Hawaii. “I hope I can inspire a lot of people going forward that have their own issues.”
Murray said he used to drink during tournament weeks as a rookie because he knew he had talent and felt he was invincible. He also brought attention to himself through social media, openly criticizing other players and getting into one social media spat with Kevin Na over Na’s reputation as a slow player.
But he felt like he turned the corner when he sought help — letting others fight for him, is how he explained it this year.
“It took me a long time to get to this point,” Murray said in January. “That was seven years ago, over seven years ago. I’m a different man now. I would not be in this position right now today if I didn’t put that drink down eight months ago.”
Peter Malnati played with Murray at Colonial. He offered to go on the CBS telecast Saturday afternoon and immediately broke down trying to talk about him.
“It’s a huge loss for all of us on the PGA Tour,” Malnati said. “As much as we want to beat each other, we’re one big family, and we lost one today. It’s terrible.”
This story has been corrected to show that Murray won the Barbasol Championship in 2017, not last year.

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone,” his parents, Eric and Terry Murray, said in the statement released Sunday. “It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare.”

On Friday, Murray withdrew from the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, citing an illness. He had finished all but the final two holes in the round.
“Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now,” the Murray family said. “Please respect our privacy as we work through this incredible tragedy, and please honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else.”

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said that he gave Murray’s family the option of asking for the remainder of the tournament to be canceled, but they insisted Murray would want it to continue. Instead, Monahan flew to Fort Worth and several players spoke emotionally about Murray’s death.
“We all want to beat each other. And then something like this happens and you realize we’re all just humans,” Peter Malnati said, fighting back tears, on the CBS broadcast. “It’s a really hard day.
“You look at Grayson and you see him. Someone who has visibly outwardly struggled in the past. And he’s been open about it. You see him kind of get his life back to a place where he’s feeling good about things. It’s just so sad.”
Murray had publicly battled alcoholism and mental health issues, but he returned to form, earned his PGA Tour card and won the Sony Open in Hawaii in January . He made the cut at both the Masters and the PGA Championship the last two months. He was ranked as the No. 58 player in the world by the Official World Golf Ranking.
“I think I first met Grayson at my home club when Grayson was probably 8 years old, maybe 9. He was the first winner of the Webb Simpson Challenge Junior Tournament that I’ve had for 14 years,” Webb Simpson said. “So, when you hear news like that over the phone you don’t think it’s real at first, and you know, you hear the emotion coming from our swing coach and then you realize it’s real. But I know that his mom was with him during the Wells Fargo Championship and I think they were hanging out together, and I loved those two days we got together. So I’m super thankful for getting some good time with him before the bad news of today.”
Monahan said it was something he had spoken directly to Murray about his mental health issues over the past three years. “He had very strong opinions, you know, and he challenged us, and I found that to be very helpful because you can learn a lot when people speak their truth in the way that he did,” Monahan said.
If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741.
