Qualifying sites – both for local and final – have been determined for the 124th U.S. Open Championship to be contested on Pinehurst Resort & Country Club’s Course No. 2, in the Village of Pinehurst, N.C., for the fourth time from June 13-16.

Local qualifying, conducted over 18 holes at 109 sites in 44 U.S. states and Canada, will take place between April 22-May 20. Those players who advance out of local qualifying will join a group of locally exempt players in final qualifying, which will be conducted over 36 holes. This final stage will be held in England and Japan (May 20) and Canada (June 3) as well as 10 U.S. sites, one on May 20 and nine others on June 3.

Online player registration for the 2024 U.S. Open will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at champs.usga.org and will continue through Wednesday, April 10.

“Allied Golf Associations in the United States and National Federations and Tours in Europe, Canada and Japan collaborate to provide an avenue to the U.S. Open through both qualifying stages where the world’s greatest players will compete for our national championship,” said USGA Chief Championships Officer John Bodenhamer. “Thousands of professional and amateur golfers with diverse backgrounds will have an opportunity to earn a place in this year’s championship at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.”

The USGA accepted a record 10,187 entries for the 2023 championship at The Los Angeles (Calif.) Country Club. The previous mark of 10,127 entries was established for the 2014 championship on Pinehurst Resort & Country Club’s Course No. 2.

Illini Country Club, in Springfield, Ill., will hold a U.S. Open qualifier for the 45th consecutive year in which qualifying has been conducted. Maketewah Country Club, in Cincinnati, Ohio, returns to the schedule after a one-year absence, its 46th time hosting since 1976. Riverton (Wyo.) Country Club and Ironwood Country Club, in Palm Desert, Calif., will host local qualifying for the 26th and 23rd year, respectively. Collindale Golf Course, in Fort Collins, Colo., has been a host site since 2003.

To be eligible, a player must have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 0.4, or be a professional. There are 14 local qualifying sites in California, the most of any state. Florida will host 13 local qualifiers.

Oops! Something went wrong

The final qualifying venues in Dallas, Texas; Columbus, Ohio; and Summit, N.J., will use two courses. Dallas Athletic Club’s Gold and Blue Courses will host a qualifier for the 11th time. Austin Eckroat, who tied for 10th, was among three players from the Dallas qualifier who made the 36-hole cut at The Los Angeles Country Club in last year’s U.S. Open. In Columbus, Ohio State University Golf Club’s Scarlet Course and Kinsale Golf & Fitness Club will be paired for the first time. Canoe Brook Country Club, with its North and South Courses, will serve as a final site for the 19th time since 1980.

Woodmont Country Club, in Rockville, Md., will host final qualifying for the 36th time in the last 38 years, with only the North Course used for the 10th consecutive time. Springfield Country Club in Ohio will host final qualifying for the 15th time. Lake Merced Golf Club, in Daly City, Calif., will be a final qualifying venue for the first time since 2012 and 12th time overall.

U.S. Open final qualifying returns to The Golf Club of Georgia for the first time since 1992. The Bear’s Club, in Jupiter, Fla., will host the final stage for a fourth time, while Old Chatham Golf Club, in Durham, N.C., and Pronghorn Resort’s Nicklaus Course, in Bend, Ore., will each be sites for a second time.

Walton Heath Golf Club, in Surrey, England, was a site when international qualifying began in 2005. The Old and New Courses will host a final qualifier for the 17th time. Cherry Hill Club and Lookout Point Country Club will combine as a site in Canada’s Ontario province. Hino Golf Club’s King Course, in Shiga Prefecture, is a first-time site in Japan.

Ken Venturi (1964) and Orville Moody (1969) are the only players to win the U.S. Open after qualifying through both local and final stages. Gene Littler (1961), Julius Boros (1963), Jerry Pate (1976), Steve Jones (1996), Michael Campbell (2005) and Lucas Glover (2009) won after advancing through final qualifying.

Several U.S. Open champions have advanced to the championship through both local and final qualifying at some point in their careers, including Glover, David Graham, Lou Graham, Hale Irwin, Tony Jacklin, Lee Janzen, Tom Kite, Johnny Miller, Corey Pavin, Curtis Strange, Lee Trevino, Gary Woodland and Fuzzy Zoeller.

The U.S. Open was previously hosted by Pinehurst Resort & Country Club’s Course No. 2 in 1999 (won by Payne Stewart), 2005 (won by Michael Campbell) and 2014 (won by Martin Kaymer). As an anchor site, Pinehurst will also host the U.S. Open in 2029, 2035, 2041 and 2047.

Pinehurst, set to host 2024 U.S. Open, awarded six additional USGA championships

Streeter Lecka/Getty Images

Six more USGA championships will be heading to Pinehurst in the near future, underlining the USGA’s commitment to making the North Carolina mecca one of the governing body’s anchor sites.

The USGA announced Tuesday that the 2027 U.S. Women’s Amateur, 2032 U.S. Junior Amateur and U.S. Girls’ Junior, 2038 U.S. Amateur, 2044 U.S. Women’s Amateur and a future U.S. Adaptive Open have been added to Pinehurst’s hosting slate.

“Bringing more championships to a venue like Pinehurst is a testament to the USGA’s commitment to our long term partnership with the resort and our promise of expanding the presence of our organization in the area,” said John Bodenhamer, chief championships officer of the USGA. “Pinehurst's rich golfing heritage and commitment to excellence make it the perfect setting for all of the USGA’s world-class events. Their commitment to our Open championships is incredible, and now we are able to shine a light on the amateur game here as well.”

In 2020 the USGA signaled a new strategy for its championships, reducing the number of venues for its premier events and introducing a rotation of sorts around a handful of sites. One of the fulcrums for this blueprint was Pinehurst; the resort was awarded four U.S. Opens, with the USGA announcing plans to move some of its operations to the area, including an administration building, testing center, museum and hall of fame. The testing center and administration building are set to open at the end of this year, with the museum and hall of fame on track to open next spring.

While additional courses have been added to the anchor strategy in the ensuing years, Pinehurst remains the USGA’s de facto epicenter: Tuesday’s announcement gives the resort 12 future USGA championships, including next year’s U.S. Open at the No. 2 course. Along with three previous U.S. Opens, Pinehurst has hosted the Ryder Cup, PGA Championship and U.S. Women’s Championship.

“We are honored and thrilled to welcome these USGA championships to our historic venue in the years to come and today continues to help us achieve our goal of hosting a variety of premier championships,” said Bob Dedman Jr., speaking on behalf of the Dedman family, which owns Pinehurst Resort. “This continued partnership with the USGA reflects our shared dedication to the game of golf and the bright future we envision together. Pinehurst's legacy in golf combined with the USGA's commitment to innovation ensures that our collaboration will continue to create memorable championship moments for years to come at all levels of the game.”

Tiger woods receives special exemption to 2024 u.s. open at pinehurst no. 2, share this article.

The week of Tiger Woods continues.

A day after his Sun Day Red brand was made available to the public – which he promoted on various talk shows – the United States Golf Association announced on Thursday that Woods was receiving a special exemption to play the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina, June 13-16.

While the PGA Championship and Masters offer lifetime exemptions to past champions, the U.S. Open does not. Woods is currently No. 789 in the Offical World Golf Ranking, and his five-year exemption after his 2019 Masters victory has run out.

The 48-year-old will make his 23rd U.S. Open start this year and first since 2020, when he missed the cut at Winged Foot. Woods is a three-time U.S. Open champion in 2000 (Pebble Beach), 2002 (Bethpage Black) and 2008 (Torrey Pines) and has finished inside the top 10 eight times.

So far this year Woods has withdrawn from his Genesis Invitational and finished 60th at the Masters, where he set the all-time record for consecutive cuts made at Augusta National. Woods is also expected to play the 2024 PGA Championship later this month, May 16-19, at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

Tiger Woods will play U.S. Open 2024: 15-time major winner accepts USGA exemption to join Pinehurst field

Woods has plans to play all four major championships this season.

The Masters - Final Round

Tiger Woods will play the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst after receiving a special exemption from the USGA to join the field. Woods was not originally eligible for the event after his five-year exemption for winning the 2019 Masters ran out, but the USGA's decision is not without precedent as golfers -- both legends and otherwise -- have also received exemptions into the U.S. Open.

"The U.S. Open, our national championship, is a truly special event for our game and one that has helped define my career," Woods said in a statement. "I'm honored to receive this exemption and could not be more excited for the opportunity to compete in this year's U.S. Open, especially at Pinehurst, a venue that means so much to the game."

Woods has said repeatedly that he wants to play once a month in 2024, a plan he repeated this week during an appearance on "Today." He made his record 24th consecutive cut at the Masters in April, and he is on schedule to tee it up in the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla (where he won in 2000).

Tiger has lifetime exemptions to play the Masters and PGA Championship, and he is eligible to play The Open Championship until he turns 60 years old. The 2024 U.S. Open is the first time he did not qualify for a major since turning professional.

Woods is a three-time winner at the U.S. Open, bringing home the championship trophy in 2000, 2002 and 2008. However, Tiger has never won the event at Pinehurst, where he will tee it up alongside the best in the world this June.

"The story of the U.S. Open could not be written without Tiger Woods," USGA chief championships officer John Bodenhamer said. "From his 15-stroke victory at Pebble Beach in 2000 to his inspiring win on a broken leg at Torrey Pines in 2008, this championship is simply better when Tiger is in the field, and his accomplishments in the game undoubtedly made this an easy decision for our special exemption committee."

Nearly three dozen players have received special passes to play in U.S. Opens, including Jack Nicklaus (eight times), Arnold Palmer (five), Tom Watson (five), Hale Irwin (three), Seve Ballesteros (two) and Gary Player (two).

It should be expected that Tiger will continue receiving USGA exemptions over the next several years should he not qualify otherwise for future U.S. Opens.

Woods finished 60th at the Masters in April. He has not played a U.S. Open since the 2020 edition at Winged Foot.

Tiger Woods accepts special exemption into 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst

Tiger Woods will compete in the 2024 U.S. Open in June. On Thursday, the United States Golf Association (USGA) announced that the golf superstar accepted a special exemption to play in the major. Woods will make his 23rd start at the U.S. Open, third at Pinehurst No. 2 and first since 2020 at Winged Foot Golf Club.

“The U.S. Open, our national championship, is a truly special event for our game and one that has helped define my career,” Woods said in a statement, per PGA Tour.com . “I’m honored to receive this exemption and could not be more excited for the opportunity to compete in this year’s U.S. Open, especially at Pinehurst, a venue that means so much to the game.”

Woods won the U.S. Open in 2000, 2002 and 2008. Overall the 48-year-old has claimed 15 major championships and 82 victories on the PGA Tour.

“The story of the U.S. Open could not be written without Tiger Woods,” USGA Chief Championships Officer John Bodenhamer said. “From his 15-stroke victory at Pebble Beach in 2000 to his inspiring win on a broken leg at Torrey Pines in 2008, this championship is simply better when Tiger is in the field, and his accomplishments in the game undoubtedly made this an easy decision for our special exemption committee.”

Tiger Woods made history at 2024 Masters

Woods is coming off playing the Masters last month. He set a Masters record with his 24th consecutive made cut , which broke the previous mark set by Fred Couples (1983-2007) and Gary Player (1959-1982). Woods finished last among players to make the cut at 16-overall, his worst in the event.

“Coming in here, not having played a full tournament in a very long time, it was a good fight on Thursday and Friday,” Woods said at the time, per WRDW .. “Unfortunately (Saturday) didn’t quite turn out the way I wanted it to.”

Despite not having a strong showing at the Masters, Woods was happy with his performance considering the lack of tournaments he’s played in the last few years. “It was a good week. It was a good week all around,” he said. “I think that coming in here, not having played a full tournament in a very long time, it was a good fight on Thursday and Friday. Unfortunately yesterday it didn’t quite turn out the way I wanted it to.”

The U.S. Open will take plae at the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club’s Course No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina from June 13-16.

PINEHURST NO. 2

Location: Pinehurst, North Carolina

Designed By: Donald Ross

Total Yardage: 7,588 Yards

Legendary golf course architect Donald Ross has designed over 400 golf courses across the United States, but Pinehurst No. 2 was always his pride and joy. The Scotland native moved to Massachusetts in 1900, but a year later traveled south to Pinehurst, North Carolina to begin construction on what would eventually become the host of the most single golf championships in America.

Ross, a former top-10 U.S. Open golfer himself, designed a sanctuary for championship-caliber golf. Every great golfer you can think of has walked Pinehurst No. 2’s sandy, wiregrass fairways and accepted the challenge of stringing together a perfect round on Ross’ diabolical masterpiece, and you can do the same in PGA TOUR 2K23 .

Pinehurst No. 2 features treacherous rough, waiting to catch wayward tee shots and approach shots, alongside rolling greens with steep slopes to send putts cascading off the edge. Your skills will be tested here, but all the greats have found a way to prove themselves. Will you?

PGA 2K23 Pinehurst

Featured Hole: No. 2 (507 yards, par 4)

The second hole on Pinehurst No. 2 was the toughest hole of the 2005 U.S. Open— made even more difficult by a dense layer of fog. Stretching from the tips to the pin at 507 yards, this par-four hole is a doozy for players who follow the right side of the fairway. Situated in front of the green is a large bunker that’s nearly unavoidable from the right, so it’s in your best interest to approach this hole from the left. When it’s time to attack the green, consider aiming short instead of long, even if it’s a back pin placement. The green is notorious for sending long shots rolling off the far side, which makes for a difficult chip back uphill, so play it safe unless you’re fully confident in your ability to stick it close to the hole.
