Sea Kayaking Barcelona

A great day kayaking on the Costa Brava (or in the city!)

  • Posted 1 year ago

While it’s possible to get your paddle on right here in the city centre, the best kayaking excursions take place on the crystal clear waters of the Costa Brava…

We preview four fantastic tours that leave daily from Barcelona during the warmer months (a 6-hour trip , an 8-hour one , a 9-hour one with hiking, and a 10-hour trip with beach afternoon); plus we highlight a chance to get in the water without leaving the city limits by selecting this 1 hour excursion .

  • 6 Hour Kayaking Trip [€75]
  • 8 Hour Kayaking Trip [€80]
  • 9 Hour Trip (Kayak + Hiking) [€85]
  • 10 Hour Trip (Kayak + Beach Afternoon) [€89]
  • 1 Hour Kayak Rental [€16.30]

1. 6-Hour Sea Kayaking Tour to Costa Brava

Explore the rugged and picturesque coastline of the Costa Brava during this 6-hour sea kayaking experience, which leaves daily from Barcelona, and also features cave snorkelling in the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean sea.

This action-packed day begins with a scenic drive to the seaside village of Sant Feliu, a one time haven of pirates and sea dogs – your guide will have a few stories! The journey time is around an hour and a quarter, and once in Sant Feliu you’ll get into your kayak and set out to explore the bays and beaches of this breathtaking stretch of Spain’s Costa Brava, or ‘The Wild Coast’, ploughing through the ocean with just your paddle.

Undoubtedly one of the day’s highlights will be the chance to snorkel amongst fish, corals and sea urchins in the otherworldly beauty of the local caves – a must for those with an adventurous and active streak.

2. 8-Hour Sea Kayak Tour to Costa Brava

Run by a young adventure company who love the outdoors, this extended day trip up to the Costa Brava follows pretty much the same itinerary at the 6-hour version, with all the same highlights – stunning scenery, fun guides, snorkelling time for those who want to jump out their canoe, and even rock jumping (strictly optional!).

The benefits of this extended tour, is that the extra time allows you to spend more time out on the Mediterranean (a total of 2.5 or 3 hours), making it arguably a better choice for those who fancy a bit more of a work out on the water. The day also features lunch on the beach.

The excursion features two options. The standard tour (€80) leaves at 10:45 from the city centre and guests will explore the craggy coastline in groups of no more than 12 people.

While those who prefer to keep things a little tighter, can choose the “small group” option (€95) , meaning you’ll set out in a group of no more than 8 people. This option leaves slightly earlier, at 10am, in a comfortable Mercedes mini van. To choose this option, first select your dates in the Get Your Guide booking calendar and then you should see both the standard and small group options available.

8-Hour Kayak Tour Details

The standard version costs €80, and includes all equipment hire, professional guide and transport to and from Barcelona and lunch on the beach.

The small group version costs €95, and includes all equipment hire, professional guide and transport to and from Barcelona and lunch on the beach.

Meeting Point & Departure Times

The meeting point for the standard tour is Carrer de la Marina 15, by the Barcelona Casino, with a departure time of 10:45am.

The small group excursion meets at the same point, but leaves at 10am.

3. 9-Hour Sea Kayaking + Hiking on the Costa Brava

This sensational small-group trip (max. 8 people) takes you all the way to the area around Sant Pol S’Agaro, where you’ll start with a gentle morning hike in the early sun along the famous Camino del Ronda coastal path. Your guide will tell you a little about the history of the region, and point out some of the typical Mediterranean flora and fauna that you encounter en route.

As the day gets hotter it’s time to cool off in the kayaks, and you’ll get to explore not only the classic coves and turquoise bays typical of the Costa Brava, but you’ll even find a secluded lagoon among the sandstone cliffs where you can enjoy a uniquely Mediterranean dip. Those who fancy getting their hair wet, can use the diving masks provided to chase seabreams and picarels and spot starfish and urchins too.

Back on land and can enjoy lunch (not included in the price) at one of the local restaurants, or chill on the beach.

9-Hour Kayak Tour Details

The trip cost €85 per person, and includes experienced tour guide and kayak instructor, return transport, insurance, sea kayak, paddle, lifejacket and optional wetsuit, as well as snorkelling gear, diving mask and complementary bottle of water.

The meeting point is Plaça del Catalunya and departure time is 8:30am.

The tour currently runs every Weds, Fri, Sat and Sunday.

Click the button below to book with Get Your Guide, who offer free cancellation just in case.

4. 10-Hour Kayak Tour (with Beach Afternoon)

Combine all the adventure of a kayaking trip with a relaxing afternoon on the Costa Brava!

Your morning begins in similar fashion to the aforementioned kayaking trips, with private transport ferrying you from Barcelona up the coast to Sant Feliu de Guixols. Here, you board your kayaks and in no time you’ll be exploring the coves and crags, with the option to snorkel and swim in sea caves.

Being a longer tour you get to spend a full 3 hours on the water, after which you’ll enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach and then have three hours of spare time to hike along the coast, head to a cocktail bar or play volleyball on the sands. Or just sit back and sunbath on the beach!

Fantastic ratings on Get Your Guide, where you can also book .

10-Hour Kayak Tour Details

The price of this full day tour is €89, and includes kayak rental, professional guide, lunch and transport to and from Barcelona

The meeting point is near Arc de Triomf, just follow the pin provided on booking. The departure time is 10am.

Don’t have time to cruise up the Costa Brava? Then you can also hire a kayak (or paddle surf board!) at the Port Olimpic and enjoy a paddle next to Barcelona’s city beaches, in the company of a professional guide.

While the scenery is not on a par with the stunning nature of ‘The Wild Coast’, it is fun to see Barcelona from the water, and if you have a busy sightseeing itinerary this is an activity you can easily fit around your plans to see Gaudi’s iconic architecture and visit all the best museums .

Latest Reviews of Sea Kayaking Barcelona

  • "One of the best experiences I've had" - by Niamh Gaynor Was relatively apprehensive going into this as I'm normally quite nervous in the water, however the guides Tim and Alex were both absolutely lovely and gave anyone who needed it a hand, price was very reasonable given that the bus, kayaking, snorkelling AND lunch were all included. It was genuinely the best experience i had while in Barcelona and I would recommend it to anyone looking to get out of the city and do something a bit different for the day, i'll definitely be back i if I ever return to Barcelona! 5 2 years ago
  • "Highlight of our trip!" - by Robin This was awesome. I was originally looking for kayaking in the Barcelona area but this worked out much better. The sea and scenery is gorgeous and the day out was well organised with transport and everything included. I would do it again, no sweat. 5 3 years ago

Things to know.

We realize that arranging a trip for a large group can be difficult. To help us plan the best activities and accommodations for your group, please provide us with an approximate number of people and the maximum number of individuals who might participate.

The amount of the initial deposit can vary depending on the specifics of your booking, but it usually falls within the range of 20-30% of the overall cost. To determine the precise deposit amount, we’ll need more details about your stag do, such as the estimated number of participants, duration, and preferred activities. Once we have this information, we’ll be able to provide you with an exact deposit amount.

After agreeing on an itinerary that meets your preferences, we will request payment of the initial deposit to secure your booking. Once we have received the deposit, your booking will be confirmed.

We recognize that planning a stag do for a significant group can be unpredictable. Therefore, we offer travel cancellation insurance to ensure that if any member of the group cannot attend, they will receive a refund.

Our primary goal is to offer you the best value for your time and money. We’ll take into account your group size, budget, and interests to connect you with the perfect lodging and activities, and our reputable partners will guarantee an extraordinary experience.

We acknowledge that organizing group trips can be overwhelming and time-consuming, but we are here to ease the burden by handling challenging tasks and complex details, allowing you to fully enjoy the moment.

Partially, yes. You are accountable for booking and purchasing your flight tickets, while we can take care of all other arrangements, including transportation from the airport to Barcelona, as well as any other transportation required for the activities mentioned in your itinerary.

All participants must be at least 18 years old. Please keep in mind that for specific activities, you may be required to show a valid ID or passport to confirm your age.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How many people in each group.

We have a maximum of 6 kayaks on our kayak tours. That’s a maximum of 12 people per guide.

Should I tip my guide?

If you feel like rewarding the extra effort your guide went to for an incredible day or special attention; then that’s totally up to you. Tips will always be appreciated as a very kind gesture.

I can’t swim... Can I still come on the kayak tour from Barcelona Day Trip?

No, unfortunately.

Spanish law requires some form of swimming ability so you must be comfortable in the water and able to swim about a length in a normal-sized swimming pool. If you are not sure, your guide will do a swimming test at the beginning of the tour.

If your guide is not satisfied you won't be able to join the tour but will have a wonderful beach, bars, restaurants, and a lovely walk to enjoy while the group is on the water.

**Unfortunately, we can’t give refunds to those who cannot swim on the day.

We want you to choose the best Barcelona Day Trip for you! So we suggest you pre-book a beach day, which includes lunch, transport, and beach time, (no kayak tour, snorkelling or swimming).

Don't book a kayak and snorkel tour unless you can swim or get some lessons before you come - It's a life skill anyone can learn at any age and we really recommend it 🙂

What should I bring?

Suitable swimming gear, sun-cream, extra water if it’s a hot day, a towel if you wish and we recommend water shoes too.

You can pick up a pair for around €12 in Decathlon. It’s not entirely necessary to have water shoes but if you have sensitive feet, walking barefoot on rocks can be a little uncomfortable.

What should I wear?

Simply a swimming costume will be fine for the kayak tour. If you burn easily in the sun, maybe bring a spare t-shirt you can keep on in the kayak and take off when you swim.

On colder days, Barcelona Day Trip will provide a wet-suit at no extra cost.

Will we get wet?

Yes definitely. Sea kayaking day tours take you as far as basically paddling, balancing, and getting in and out of the kayak at different interesting spots. All of those actions have opportune moments for a splash or to be fully submerged in the water.

You will also be in the water for a snorkel on this tour. It is optional but we hope you'll try it, it's wonderful.

Our kayaks are very stable and your guide will teach you how to stay upright however in every group we’ve had bar 1, someone has flipped over and landed in the sea.

Should I be scared of flipping the kayak?

No definitely not, the way you fall from a kayak, although never very graceful, is not scary. Imagine being sat on the edge of a swimming pool then kind of falling sideways headfirst into the water. It’s more funny than scary and you won’t be the only ones that go over.

If you’re very nervous about it, tell your guide on your kayak tour and they will demonstrate it or even help you with a practice tip at the start of the tour. Once you’ve done it once, you’ll see it’s not bad at all.

Can I bring my phone and sunglasses?

Yes, you can. Please just remember that anything you bring on the kayak tour will get wet and could be dropped and lost.

We provide a box for valuables that is kept in our office during the tour.

You can either bring your own or; we can provide phone cases or sunglasses lanyards for €10 each on the day. That way, you can take your sunglasses with confidence, or have your phone around your neck in a little pouch for extra photos on your kayak tour.

We do not recommend to bring phones or expensive sunglasses without a lanyard or wearable phone case.

What about valuables?

When we arrive on the beach from Barcelona, valuables can be placed inside a box that’s safely locked at the back of our office for the duration of the kayak tour. This includes mobile phones, wallets, travel documents, etc. After you’re back from the water, collect your valuables on your way to the changing room.

Please don’t take anything with you on our kayak tour that you don’t want to lose or get very wet… The sea is extremely deep in some places and there is a limit to how far down our guides can dive to collect dropped items. This includes tiny earings that can come off while using the snorkelling masks or getting in and out of the kayaks while on the tour.

We’re still looking for a single Tiffany earing that was lost in the summer of 2021… Lost treasure is of course, another great reason to book

How long is the transfer from Barcelona to the Costa Brava?

The transfer up and down the coast takes roughly one hour and fifteen minutes each way. The time goes very quickly and we play some decent tunes on the way back and forward from Barcelona to Costa Brava on each of our kayaking day tours.

Most people fall asleep on the way back and there is both conversation or music to entertain you while you soak up views of the countryside on the way there.

How many miles can a beginner kayak in a day?

A kayak on average will travel at around 3-5mph (5-8kmph), so at a steady pace you could cover 20-30 miles in a day or 50 -100km.

Kayaking is very easy to pick up and you'll be paddling with no worries in no time at all.

Our kayak tour is 3 hours long, covering a maximum total paddling distance of around 5-6 miles (8-10km). The distance we travel depends on the ability of each group, and the weather conditions that day.

It's around the same distance it would be to walk from Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, to the Big W Hotel on the beach and back again. (Much easier on a kayak!)

We have many stops and breaks for fun activities that the group can get stuck into and have a little rest from paddling. All in all, it's a very manageable distance and a lot of fun especially if it's your first kayak tour experience.

If you're not sure about your level of fittness, just get in touch and you can talk it through with one of the team 🙂

MORE UNUSUAL FAQ'S

Is the sand hot.

Yes, the sand can become hot in the sun. No, we cannot control it.

Can I bring my dog on the kayak tour?

We’ve done it before so things to consider: The dog must be taken on our transfer in a travel crate for the journey (which can be distressing for both the dog, the owner and others on the tour).

Dogs are not allowed on beaches in Spain so it means carrying the dog to the kayak. Some dogs find a kayak tour a little too exciting but talk to us and we’ll accommodate you if we can, and you think your dog will enjoy it.

Can you guarantee good weather?

Most of the time Spain enjoys incredible weather that is reasonably consistent/predictable.

However, there are occasions when the weather changes suddenly or is unpredictable and we have to move/delay or even cancel the kayak tour.

This doesn’t happen often and if it does, we’ll either move you to the next available tour or give you a full refund.

Is there traffic on the motorway?

Just like the weather, our transfer time on our kayak tour from Barcelona – Costa Brava and back, is mostly consistent and predictable.

There are times when the journey can take a little longer of course, so sadly yes, if there is extra traffic on the motorway we can be held up.

Unfortunately, just like the weather, it is inevitably out of our control.

The longest we’ve ever had to travel on very busy days is one hour and thirty five minutes. Normally the trip takes just over an hour.

There were not enough / too many fish?

The kayaking and snorkelling around the Costa Brava is varied and beautiful, take a look at our Sea Life page to get an idea of what you might find on our tour. Unfortunately, like the weather and traffic on the motorway, how many fish we see each day while we snorkel is also out of our control.

Our guides are very experienced in the area and will find the best possible spots on the day of your guided tour. We assure you, it’s a thoroughly enjoyable experience – of course, not comparable to snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef in Australia but hey, where can you get a good paella in Oz?

Please do expect to see fish and other beautiful sea creatures when you snorkel and also, in the water from the kayak.

Will I have a good time?

Yes, you will! All of our kayak tours are amazing because of you, your group and your guide! If you’re looking for a good time, you’ll find one. We very rarely have guests that don’t enjoy our tours.

Our kayak tours are super fun, relaxing and sometimes challenging. It’s an outdoor experience in a beautiful location with fun and happy people.

We create a team environment and a small family of friends for the day so enjoy and embrace the vibe and you’ll have the best experiences of your holiday.

Frequently Asked Questions

We will meet on the terrace of La Boheme cafe in Vila Olimpica. You will receive full meeting instructions in your confirmation email. For private tours, depending where you are staying, we come and pick you up. Please arrive 10 minutes before your tour is scheduled to begin, and give yourself extra time if you’re unsure of the location.

Small Group – A maximum of 8 kayakers per instructor/van. Regular Group – Up to 12 kayakers per instructor, up to 4 groups per private coach. Private Group – No maximum number, with the quantity of instructors according to group size.

We will take a private van/minibus or coach up the coast towards France. It’s about 1 hour and 15 minutes through the Catalonian valleys. We will kayak in and around the village of Sant Feliu de Guixols and S’Agaró.

We understand that whilst travelling plans can change and that you may need to cancel your tours. Just give us 24 hours advance notice, and we will offer a full refund on any amount that you have paid (with the exception of private group trips, which must be cancelled 7 days in advance for a full refund… of course exceptions are made for COVID related travel issues). If you need to cancel within 24 hours of our reservation we normally cannot offer any refund, unless we can fill your spots. It may be possible to reschedule your booking for another day, depending on availability.

How many people will there be in a group? The tour will be divided into groups of maximum 8 people per instructor (Spanish law requires that there is one guide per 16 kayakers). We allow more for private groups.

What if I am unable to swim, can I still participate? We cannot take you on the kayaks with no swimming ability. The Spanish Sports Federation regulates this and we conform to the rules.

What is the required swimming level? You need to be able to swim a lap of a swimming pool without the help of any life jackets.

Do I need to be an experienced kayaker? No! We’ve had everyone from children to 80-year-old first-time kayakers come out and have a blast on our adventurous kayaking tour.

Where do we keep our stuff during the activity? We have a secure room on the beach where you can store all your belongings not needed for the tour.

What should I wear? We recommend a swimsuit/bathing suit. Depending on the temperature of the water (usually only applicable in the early and late parts of the summer) and the wind, we might recommend wearing a wetsuit. We have neoprene spring suits (wetsuit with no lower arms and legs) that you can use free of charge.

Where are we going and how long is the journey? We will take a private coach/bus up the coast towards France. It’s about 1 hour and 15 minutes through the Catalonian valleys. We will kayak in and around the village of Sant Feliu de Guixols and S’Agaró.

What route will we take when we get there? We will choose a route for your tour based on the group and the sea/weather conditions (wind and waves), though we’ll always try to minimize paddling into strong wind and currents. Every tour is slightly different. There are four different routes that we can do, and we will always try and visit the marine reserve, but this depends on the day’s sea conditions.

How fast do you paddle? Will I be able to keep up? Will I get bored moving too slowly? Our pace depends on the group, but we generally take our time. We almost always have plenty of time to get where we’re going, so there’s no need to rush. We’ll keep things moving, and we will never leave anyone behind.

Will we go into caves? Normally yes. However, your guide will determine this once in front of the caves. Safety is our number one priority.

Will I get wet? You most certainly will. It’s all part of the fun. However, the degree of how wet you get depends on the day, and snorkelling is not compulsory, you can chill out in the kayak or explore the rocks and nearby rock pools while the others are in the water.

Can I just come along for the kayaking or just the snorkelling? Yes of course. If you don’t fancy snorkelling, you can stay in your kayak, sunbathe on the rocks, relax or explore the snorkelling area in your kayak. If you just want to snorkel and not kayak, just choose the beach day option.

Will I see any wildlife? Yes, we will hopefully see tonnes of animals in their natural habitat. Of course, this depends on the sea conditions of the day. However, we hope to see octopus, Moray Eels, Cormorants and lots of other kinds of colourful, native fish.

Is the sea cold? At the beginning and end of the season, the sea can be quite fresh. It’s perfect for kayaking but some might find the ocean a little chilly in those periods. We do provide you with neoprene spring suits (free of charge) that do help somewhat. Either way, we will always make sure that the group will be having a blast.

What can I bring on the kayak? We recommend bringing as little as possible. Feel free to bring a waterproof camera and a bottle of water on the kayak. Basically, don’t bring anything with you that you don’t want to get wet or lose. If you have any medication, diabetic snacks, etc… we can provide a waterproof bag.

Can I buy food and drinks there? Yes. There is a bar/restaurant next to us. You’re welcome to sit on their terrace and eat your sandwiches. You can also buy your drinks there (soft drinks, beer, cocktails, etc). They do sell bottles of water but it’s cheaper to buy water before joining us on the tour in Barcelona.

Who will be taking me on the tour? One of our experienced and certified guides will lead your group on the tour. Each guide has extensive knowledge of the area and is trained in water safety and first aid.

I’m already in Costa Brava, can I meet you directly there? Lucky you, and yes. Just email us before booking and we will send you the address, parking info, and itinerary. We will also be able to give you a discount if you ask for a discount code before booking.

Do you have weight limits for kayaking? Unfortunately yes. Our smallest life jackets are limited to 25 Kg (56 lbs) and our maximum limit is 115 Kg (253 lbs).

Is sea kayaking different from other kayaking? Sea kayaking takes place in the beautiful blue ocean. And here, we can have fun surfing the waves on our kayak. The kayaks are also normally slightly larger and are more stable than your traditional river kayak.

What’s the snorkelling like in Costa Brava? Well, don’t expect the Mediterranean to be like the Great Barrier Reef or the Red Sea but it can be very rewarding playing with an octopus and getting up close to a Moray Eel. Every day is different, and we sometimes get some unexpected visitors such as stingrays.

Where is your office in Barcelona? We are an office-less company, that way we keep our overheads low and can pass these savings onto you.

When do you cancel tours because of the weather? We generally don’t cancel tours due to overcast skies or scattered showers (the Mediterranean can be especially calm and pleasant during light rain), but we do cancel trips for steady rain, especially strong wind, thunderstorms, and high waves. Sometimes, but very rarely, we do cancel tours for jellyfish blooms. If you have reserved a tour, we will email you if we are cancelling the trip due to weather and give you a choice of either rescheduling (depending on availability) or receiving a full refund. We will do this as soon as we know the tour will be cancelled, however, this can sometimes not be until the evening before the tour.

Do you use double or single kayaks on your trips? We typically use tandem (two-person) sit-on-top sea kayaks on our tours. We find that tandems are best for most people because they are more stable and spacious. Plus, if you get tired, your partner can pick up the slack! If you are joining a tour on your own, you will either be given a solo kayak or paired up with another person in the group. We will always try and pair you up as it’s more fun this way.

What brand or style of kayaks do you use? We use sit-on-top kayaks because they are safer and more fun. All our kayaks are from Rotomod (RTM) which are based in France. We generally use the RTM Ocean Duo (Tandem) and the RTM Mambo (Individual), both with deluxe seats. They are made of high-density linear polyethylene (PEHD). This material is very strong and recyclable. Due to their unique hull design, they are equally at home in the surf as they are on flat water.

Do I need to tip my guide? No, only if you want to and feel that it’s deserved. Tips are never expected but always appreciated.

Don’t just take our word for it!
