Kayaking on Caddo Lake

Caddo Lake State Park in the Piney Woods region of East Texas is one of the top destinations in the Lone Star State for kayaking.

The enchanting landscape of Spanish moss and bald cypress trees on Caddo Lake is best explored by kayaking.

Caddo lake offers a vast range of paddling trails for people of all interests and skill levels.

Inks Lake, Colorado River

Another popular kayaking location is on Inks Lake, which is probably the smallest of the Highland Lakes.

This lake is surrounded by the rugged beauty of Texas and offers numerous hiking trails as well as limestone bluffs overlooking the water.

It’s recommended that beginner kayakers start this trip at the Inks Dam Overlook or Valley Springs Lodge, where they can relax and learn about kayaking with a bit more ease.

Lady Bird Lake, Austin

Kayaking on the Lady Bird Lake in Austin is an amazing experience.

Lady Bird Lake is located in downtown Austin and offers easy access to the city’s best attractions.

From paddle boarding and kayaking to rowing, there is a range of activities you can do on Lady Bird Lake.

The Lady Bird Lake paddling trail takes Texas kayakers under the Congress Avenue Bridge and you can see the large bat colony that resides here.

If you kayak around sunset, you can also watch the bats fly out from under the bridge.

There are several kayak rentals available near the lake in downtown Austin.

Launch your kayak from Little Webberville Park, and enjoy the views down the Colorado River for 6 miles all the way to Big Webberville Park.

The stretch has numerous fish and is amazing to spend a day outdoors.

Columbus Paddling Trail

The Columbus Paddling Trail is a 6.5-mile stretch of the Colorado River that winds through the city of Columbus, Texas .

The trail is a popular spot for kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddle-boarding, and offers great views.

Along the way, paddlers will have the opportunity to see a variety of wildlife, including herons, ibises, waterfowl, and reptiles.

Mission Reach of the San Antonio River is an 8 mile long paddling trail through San Antonio’s historical Missions.

The area provides a network of public parks and places to access the river.

You can kayak past the Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan, Mission Espada one by one as you take in views of the beautiful surrounding nature.

Paddling the river is one of the best things to do on the San Antonio Riverwalk .

Brazos River kayaking

The Brazos River is the longest river in Texas as well as a popular Texas waterway.

You can kayak the Brazos River at several locations.

The most popular spot is probably in Waco, Texas.

The city has several paddling trails starting at Cameron park.

Beginners can go for the 2.2 miles Bosque Bluffs Paddling Trail while an experienced kayaker can enjoy the popular 4.8 miles Brazos Bridges Paddling Trails.

The Brazos Bend State Park, located south of Houston, also has good kayaking and paddling trails for all skill levels.

Possum Kingdom Lake, located along the Brazos River, is also a good place to kayak.

Buffalo Bayou Paddling Trail, Houston

When it comes to H-Town, the city’s Buffalo bayou paddling trail is exceedingly popular with all skill levels.

Big Bend National Park Kayaking on the Rio Grande

Head south to the Big bend National Park located near the US Mexico border.

The Rio Grande River flows through the Big Bend National Park and has a variety of kayaking trails on offer.

The Santa Elena Canyon on the Rio Grande River is one of the most popular spots for kayaking in this area.

Neches River National Wildlife Refuge

Neches River National Wildlife Refuge is located near the town of Jacksonville in East Texas.

Trinity River Kayaking

Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge is a good place for beginners looking to try their hand at kayaking while the Dallas Trinity Paddling Trails offers more challenging and exciting runs.

San Marcos River Kayaking

Located near New Braunfels , the San Marcos River is a great place to try different levels of white water.

There are many class I-II rapids on the river which allows for safe kayaking fun.   

It is also considered one of the best places in Texas for whitewater kayaking lessons and is quite popular during spring break.

San Marcos also has many other attractions for visitors.

Best Places for Sea kayaking in Texas

For more of an adventure, sea kayaking on the Gulf Coast of Texas is a great option.

The Gulf of Mexico offers many wonderful sea kayak spots along the Texas coastline.

With its crystal clear waters, you will be able to enjoy time with friends and family as well as wildlife, including dolphins which are common on the gulf.

Sea kayaking at Padre Island National Seashore

Padre Island National Seashore is our favorite when it comes to sea kayaking and kayak fishing on the Gulf Coast.

While sea kayaking is best left to experienced kayakers, those looking to kayak on the placid water can launch their kayaks from Bird Island Basin located on the Upper Laguna Madre side of Padre Island.

Bird Island Basin has kayak rentals and is also great for windsurfing.

Sea Rim State Park kayaking trails

When it comes to Texas parks, Sea Rim State Park near Sabine Pass is one of the most underrated kayaking destinations.

The park has several miles of kayaking trails that traverse the 4000 acres of marshlands.

Kayak rental options are available at the park store or you can bring your own.

The park is a great option for kayakers seeking solitude.

On the paddling trails, you can spot several migratory birds of the Gulf Coast.

South Padre Island kayaking

South Padre Island is a great place to kayak and is full of beautiful sights and wildlife.

The island also has some good paddling trails for kids and beginners.

South Padre’s best paddle trail is the Laguna Madre seashore which is excellent for watching dolphins, turtles and birds.

Kayak fishing in South Padre is outstanding and there are several international angling records held here.

Some of the best spots to fish from your kayak include Brownsville Ship Channel which has good catches of redfish, speckled trout and flounder while the southernmost tip of South Padre near Port Isabel is a great place to fish for tarpon.

There is no doubt that Texas is blessed with a plethora of waterways. The Lone Star State boasts numerous lakes, rivers, and reservoirs that make it easy to enjoy a day out on the water. 

It doesn’t matter if you are looking for a tranquil stream or a rapid-filled river, Texas has you covered. There is no better way to experience the joy of being on the water than exploring it by kayak. 

Kayaking in Texas allows you to get up close and personal to some of the best nature spots in the state. The diverse landscape found throughout Texas only amplifies your kayaking experience. While kayaking, you can surround yourself with the Texas Hill Country , the desert plains, or the beautiful waters of the Texas Gulf Coast, meaning there truly is a Texas kayaking adventure for everyone!

As a Texas native, I have been exploring the waterways of Texas for years, so trust me when I tell you that you are in for an adventure when you go kayaking in Texas.

1. Big Bend National Park

Head to far West Texas to find the incredible Big Bend National Park . A kayaking adventure in Big Bend is like no other. One minute you are paddling on the Rio Grande through open desert land, and the next you are surrounded on all sides by 1,500-foot canyon walls. Kayaking in Big Bend National Park also allows you an opportunity to see some of the animals that call Big Bend home. Keep your eyes peeled for beavers, turtles, deer, and birds. 

With multiple put-in and take-out spots, many people choose to do a multi-day kayaking trip on the Rio Grande. The Santa Elena Canyon float is popular for this type of excursion as you have the opportunity to experience the tranquil portion of the river as well as the Rock Slide — a Class IV rapid — when the water levels are just right.

Be sure to visit the National Park Service website to obtain the proper permits and to ensure that you have the right equipment before beginning a float in Big Bend. 

Pro Tip : Big Bend is a huge national park. Be sure to check out these Big Bend tips before you visit. Also, bring plenty of supplies, especially food, water, and sun protection during your visit. 

2. Brazos River

The Brazos River is one of the best places to go kayaking in Texas for those who want a peaceful and scenic experience. Stretching over 840 miles, the Brazos River is one of the longest rivers in the United States and flows through Texas all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.

While there are numerous places to kayak on the Brazos River, one of the most popular spots is the area below Possum Kingdom Lake . Possum Kingdom Lake is located about 90 miles west of Fort Worth and is considered “The Great Lake of Texas.” 

This area of the Brazos is typically Class I waterflow, meaning they make for an easy, peaceful float while enjoying the beautiful North Texas scenery. The area south of Possum Kingdom lake rewards visitors with kayaking under 500-foot tall cliffs made from Texas granite. It is truly a magnificent sight! 

Pro Tip: Spring and autumn are the best seasons for this trip, but it can get very crowded. Try to come during the week if you want to avoid some of the crowds on this stretch of river. 

3. Corpus Christi

The Texas beach town of Corpus Christi is a great kayaking destination that offers opportunities for all levels of kayakers. Experienced kayakers will appreciate access to the Gulf of Mexico, and beginner kayakers will love the calm waters that are also available in this area. 

With easy proximity to Mustang Island, Bird Island Basin, and Packery Channel Park, there is no shortage of water in this area. While kayaking in Corpus Christi, you will find yourself surrounded by nature, especially birds. Birding in this region is actually one of the main reasons that people love to kayak here. 

Pro Tip: Corpus Christ makes for a fabulous weekend getaway as there is just so much to see and do around town. Consider making this Texas kayaking trip into a longer vacation!

4. Caddo Lake

A visit to Caddo Lake in East Texas makes you feel as though you have been transported to another land! Located in East Texas between Texas and Louisiana , Caddo Lake is an easy escape from Dallas . 

Caddo Lake comes in at just over 25,000 acres, making it imperative to get out on the water if you truly want to experience the beauty of the lake. While paddling here, you will find yourself surrounded by gorgeous Cypress trees dripping in Spanish moss that make for the perfect photo opportunity. In addition, there are numerous animals to look out for on Caddo Lake. Home to a wide variety of fish, birds, and reptiles, including alligators, a day kayaking on Caddo Lake is truly a serene experience.

Pro Tip: With over 50 miles of paddling trails, you might want to consider hiring a guide before you set out kayaking on Caddo Lake. 

5. Guadalupe River 

Another fabulous place to kayak in Texas is the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels . New Braunfels is located about 30 miles north of San Antonio , Texas, in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. This prime location means that you will be surrounded by gorgeous scenery while kayaking the Guadalupe River.

All skill levels can enjoy a float down the Guadalupe River as it has everything from calm waters to Class III rapids. Kayaking the Guadalupe in this area ensures that you will always have something to see as the area is popular with fishermen and river tubers in addition to kayakers. The spring-fed waters are usually crystal clear and the surrounding Texas Hill Country scenery is gorgeous. 

Pro Tip: Floating the Guadalupe River in the summertime is a popular activity, especially on the weekend. To avoid some of the crowds, and have a more relaxing kayaking experience, consider kayaking the Guadalupe River during the week. 

6. Lake Conroe

Lake Conroe is another of the Texas lakes that make for a great kayaking trip. Located about an hour from Houston , Texas, Lake Conroe is a tranquil paradise. This 21,000-acre lake (which is actually a reservoir) boasts almost 160 miles of shoreline, giving you lots of areas to explore both on and off of the water. 

My favorite part of Lake Conroe to explore is the portion of the lake that is within the Sam Houston National Forest. Kayaking here provides visitors with calm, clear waters while they are surrounded by East Texas pine trees. 

7. Lady Bird Lake

Located right in the heart of Austin , Texas, Lady Bird Lake is the perfect place to go kayaking when you are visiting the capital city. Lady Bird lake offers kayakers calm waters to navigate as they find themselves surrounded by views of the Downtown Austin skyline. The best part is that you don’t even have to bring your own kayak as there are kayak rentals right on the lake!

8. Frio River

Another popular river to kayak in Texas is the Frio River. Visitors flock to this south-central Texas river to escape from the Texas heat. This means that the Frio River is popular with kayakers, swimmers, and tubers in the summer months. The water of the Frio stays crystal clear year-round since it is fed by an underwater spring. The Frio rewards kayakers with calm waters that are easy to navigate and provides gorgeous cliffs that seem to plunge into the river. 

Pro Tip: Like most Texas waterways, the Frio can get extremely crowded in the summer months. For a serene experience, consider kayaking the Frio in the fall. Not only are you rewarded with fewer people, but the changing leaves reflecting in the river are gorgeous!

9. Colorado River

Another great place to kayak in Texas near Austin is on the Colorado River. The Colorado River is the 18 th longest in the United States and is actually the longest river to start and end in the Lone Star State.

Kayaking the Colorado River is great for beginners or those looking for a nice, peaceful float as there are no rapids on the river. The fact that there are many put-in areas in the Austin area makes this a very popular river to kayak on.

10. Padre Island National Seashore

Located at the southernmost tip of Texas, the Padre Island National Seashore offers a fun experience for both advanced and novice kayakers. Experienced kayakers will enjoy exploring the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Here, you can challenge the waves of the ocean while you try your hand at some sea fishing.

The calm waters of the Laguna Madre offer beginning kayakers the opportunity to explore a rare ecosystem in the United States. Being one of six hypersaline (saltier than the ocean) environments in North America means that paddling these waters will allow you to see a diverse and unique ecosystem at work. This area is especially important to migratory bird species, so keep your eyes peeled to see how many different species you can spot.

Pro Tip: Bring your fishing pole when you visit this area! The Padre Island National Seashore is an incredible ecosystem. In addition to migrating birds, several species of fish call this area home. The Colorado River can offer lots of river miles if you’re up for a  multi-day trip . The river is generally flatwater, which can make it ideal for families. There are also plenty of access points, making it easy to plan both short and long trips.

A short trip can be from Little Webberville Park to Webberville Park. Kayak and canoe rental is available next to Little Webberville Park.

Another good spot is  Bob Bryant Park  in Bastrop, where you can paddle seven miles downriver to the take-out at  Bastrop County Nature Park .

How to get there:

Little Webberville Park is located off FM-969 east of Austin. Bob Bryant Park is located off Charles Boulevard in Bastrop.

The Brazos River is a long river that can be great for extended trips as it flows into the Gulf of Mexico. A good place to launch can be near  Possum Kingdom Lake , just below the Highway 16 bridge. From here it can be a scenic 10-mile trip to Chick Bend, where you’ll find several places to camp.

You can  take-out at Chick Bend  or continue to Highway 4. Kayak rentals are available near the launch at Highway 4. This can be an alternative launch point to paddle to Hart Bend.

The river can also be  great for fishing for bass  and catfish.

The put-in at Possum Kingdom Lake is at the Highway 16 bridge. The take-out (and kayak/canoe rental) is at the Highway 4 bridge north of Palo Pinto.

3: Lady Bird Lake

Lady Bird Lake is part of the Colorado River and is located in downtown Austin. This can be an ideal spot to paddle, with fantastic views of the Austin skyline.

Because of its city location, there are several places to rent kayaks, including at the Texas Rowing Center. There are many places to launch, with boat ramps dotted along both banks, including  Waller Beach Metro Park .

Lady Bird Lake is known for its large colony of bats that take flight each night during the summer from the Congress Avenue Bridge.

4: Guadalupe River

The Guadalupe River can be easy to reach from San Antonio and Austin. It features a combination of mild rapids and flatwater, with scenic surroundings, including limestone bluffs, native trees, and a variety of wildlife.

The river is also home to a variety of bass (including Guadalupe bass) and is known for its trout fishing below the Canyon Lake dam.

A good launch is at Guadalupe River State Park to follow the paddling trail to Nichol’s Landing. You can choose to continue your trip beyond this to Rebecca Creek Road.

Kayaks and canoes are available for rent at the canoe livery at the Highway 281 bridge.

Guadalupe River State Park is located off Highway 46 between Boerne and New Braunfels.

5: Caddo Lake

Caddo Lake can be one of the most scenic and interesting places in Texas to paddle. The lake spans thousands of acres and features bayous filled with bald cypress trees draped in Spanish moss. There’s also lots of wildlife, including alligators.

This calm lake can be ideal for all skill levels. Caddo Lake State Park can be a great place to launch and features a campground and kayak rental.

Carter’s Chute Paddling Trail can be one of the highlights and can begin and end at the state park.

From Marshall, head northeast on Highway 43. Follow signs for Caddo Lake State Park after the town of Karnack.

6: Padre Island National Seashore

Padre Island National Seashore  features the world’s longest undeveloped barrier island. With the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the salty Laguna Madre on the other, this can be a fantastic place to paddle.

The Laguna Madre offers sheltered waters, ideal for new paddlers. There are also lots of beaches for camping.

This can be a great place for birdwatching and viewing other coastal wildlife. A good spot to launch can be at Bird Island Basin, where there’s plenty of parking. Kayak rentals are available at the end of Bird Island Basin Road.

From Corpus Christi, cross the JFK Causeway and follow Park Road 22 to the National Seashore and Bird Island Basin is to the right shortly after the park entrance.

If you’re looking for crystal clear water and beautiful scenery, the Frio River could be the ideal spot. This clear, but cold river can offer a relaxing trip alongside limestone bluffs and bald cypress trees. The river is shallow with sections of flatwater and mild rapids.

Garner State Park can be a good place to launch and if you don’t want to bring your own kayak, you can rent one from the park’s boathouse.

There are several access points along the river between Leakey and Concan.

Garner State Park is located just off Highway 83, south of Leakey.

8: Rio Grande

The Rio Grande is one of Texas’s most famous waterways and is a designated Wild and Scenic River. It flows through deep, remote canyons and alongside the Mexican border.

Paddling the Rio Grande will usually require a multi-day trip. For a two or three-day trip, a good spot to launch to paddle through Boquillas Canyon is at Rio Grande Village in Big Bend National Park. The take-out is 33 miles downstream at Heath Canyon.

Beyond Heath Canyon, the Lower Canyons section has Class IV rapids and is not recommended for beginners.

From Route 90, take Route 385 south from Marathon and follow it to Rio Grande Village.

9: Neches River

The Neches River is a wild river that flows through  Davy Crockett National Forest . This can be a peaceful place to paddle and ideal for wildlife viewing. There is a  9-mile paddling trail that launches at Anderson Crossing (CR-1155) with the take-out at Highway 7 .

The river can offer good fishing for catfish and bass. It can also be ideal for family trips and new paddlers. The water is generally slow-moving with occasional small riffles.

From Highway 7 take FR-511 (dirt road) to CR-1155. The launch is signposted at the bridge.

10: Sabine River

The Sabine River can be an ideal spot for an all-day adventure. The Sabine Sandbar Paddling Trail offers three different trips. The longest one is 19 miles and can take around 10 hours to paddle to Yellow Dog County Park. This put-in for this trip is at the FM-2517 bridge.

The next take-out is 15 miles downstream at McFadden Landing. You can also launch here to paddle the shorter four-mile trip to the Yellow Dog launch.

This can be a  quiet spot to paddle  with wildlife and opportunities to stop on sandbars.

Kayak rentals are available at Austin Kayak for self-transportation.

From Carthage, head south on US-59 to FM-2517. Head east on FM-2517 – the launch is at the bridge. McFadden Landing is at the end of CR-438.

Galveston Island can be a fantastic place to explore by kayak. The barrier island is rich in history and a haven for wildlife. Galveston Island State Park can be a great place to access the water on both sides of the island.

The park offers three paddling trails through sheltered waters, with coves and inlets to explore.

Kayak rentals and tours are available outside of the state park.

From I-45, take 61st Street to Seawall Boulevard. Follow the road southwest to the state park.

Approximately 1.5 million insect-eating Mexican free-tail bats live in the colony under the bridge. To see them, you must visit between the months of March and October, with the best viewing in August, because they migrate south during the colder months.

The bats leave their roost 30-60 minutes before sunset, so be ready with your kayak in the water to see this unique sight.

The bats are only one stop on the 11-mile Lady Bird Lake Paddling Trail. With the skyline visible for most of the trail, you’ll be able to get acquainted with Austin as you kayak. Beaver Pond Paddling Trail

Just north of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, you can find a small but special treat: the Beaver Pond Paddling Trail. The trail has interpretive signage at 12 different stops. It is a very short loop, only 1 mile, and is great for beginning kayakers and children.

If paddling quietly, you increase your chances of seeing green herons and wading birds, beavers, opossums, bullfrogs, and green tree frogs. Fishing is not allowed. This short trail is a great snapshot of kayaking in Texas if you’re ready to get your feet wet for the first time.

There is an entry fee of $5.00 per vehicle. Much of the trail is shaded and cool on warm days. Enjoy the shade under willow thickets and beautiful water lilies in the open areas. This is truly one of the best day trips from Dallas!

Mission Reach Paddling Trail

This paddling trail is 8 miles long and carries you through the mission region of San Antonio . Get unique views of this historic region from your kayak! The trail even passes through one of the best national parks in Texas , San Antonio Missions National Historic Park. Get an unusual glimpse into the National Historic Park which most visitors do not see.

During times of low water, there are more than 30 chutes that allow you to pass. The chutes create short riffles. Expect high water flow for the 72 hours following any rainfall. Kayaking in San Antonio is an ideal way to incorporate an outdoor adventure into your trip itinerary.

Keep your eyes peeled for egrets, herons, and double-crested cormorants. The trip will take between 3 and 5 hours. Fish for sunfish and largemouth bass as you float past miles of hiking and biking trails. Native plant species abound on the banks thanks to a large restoration project. You might even see some wildflowers depending on when you visit!

Kayaking in Houston

Take the Buffalo Bayou Paddling Trail to experience Houston from the water. This 26-mile trail travels through the heart of the city. The trail is too long for a one-day trip, but it is broken up into smaller segments that are doable in 1.5-4 hours.

You’ll get views of the city that you can’t get anywhere else while kayaking in Houston. With 10 different access points, you can customize your trip to which areas of the Buffalo Bayou you’d like to see. A bayou is a slow-moving watercourse, and they’re often swampy. Houston was built around several and you’ll be able to see some of the banks of sand, red clay, cliffs, and sandstone the water has carved its way through in addition to the modern structures like the bridges and roadways that keep Houston moving.

There is not much elevation change so there are not many riffles. But do not put your kayak in during turbulent conditions after storms. The water is not swimmable and bring hand sanitizer as this is a very urban river. This trail provides some great urban kayaking in Texas!

Victoria Paddling Trail

Also on the Gulf Coast, you can escape to the Victoria Paddling Trail for some fantastic kayaking in Texas. This trail follows the Guadalupe River and slowly meanders past beautiful low river banks. The 25-mile long trail is broken up into four sections which can range anywhere from 1 hour to 6 hours depending on the kind of excursion you’d prefer. There are 5 different access points along this paddling route where you can drop in or hop out.

Look for sandbars to stop for rest or to quietly watch for native birds. Migratory birds love to stop at the Guadalupe River on their travels. Visitors have spotted bald eagles, ospreys, kingfishers, and more. Armadillos also frequent the areas near the river.

Nichol’s Landing Paddling Trail

If you’re looking for some excitement in Texas Hill Country , try kayaking the Nichol’s Landing Paddling Trail on the Upper Guadalupe River.

This river provides some rapids and areas of fast water between longer stretches of calm waters. Experienced kayakers will know to watch out for and avoid hazards in these fast water runs.

This trip can take between 3 and 6 hours to travel the 10 miles, varying with flow rates. You’ll see the rugged cliffs and boulders of Hill Country on this adventure kayaking in Texas. Look for interesting limestone shelves on and bluffs along the banks.

This trail is also known for the mature trees lining the banks in some stretches. In particular, keep an eye out for big bald cypress trees. The chance of seeing livestock enjoying the freshwater creates another point of interest.

Pecan Bayou Paddling Trail

The Pecan Bayou Paddling Trail provides some peaceful kayaking in Texas. It is slow-moving water located upstream from a dam. The boat ramp is in the middle of the trail so it can be paddled either as a complete loop (about 7.2 miles) or two different directions – upriver (3.2 miles) or downriver (4 miles.

Located about 150 miles from Fort Worth, the Pecan Bayou is in the middle of Hill Country. An orchard once surrounded the bayou and you can still see the 100-year-old pecan trees dotting the banks of the bayou. Owls and woodpeckers are commonly sighted. Birdlife is a big draw at this bayou.

Mineola BigFoot Paddling Trail

A wonderful spot to drop your kayak in the water is the Mineola Bigfoot Paddling Trail along the Sabine River in east Texas. With 11.9 miles of a paddling trail, this is a fantastic location to kayak in Texas. If you’re looking for a trip where you can kayak to a campsite, this is the one for you!

In the middle of the trail is the Mineola Nature Preserve Campsite. There is a fire ring and 6 picnic tables as well as locations for tents. It’s a great spot for a picnic lunch and rest or an overnight stay! Imagine rolling into your sleeping bag and stargazing after a day of kayaking.

Trip times are usually between 6 and 8 hours. Do not visit this trail during times of low water as submerged snags and logs can become more hazardous with low water conditions. High water conditions are also best to be avoided. There are 3 large logs stretching across the river to be aware of. The flow of water is controlled by the water released from upstream lakes and dams and is heavily influenced by rainfall events. Check conditions before kayaking.

Bosque Bluffs and Brazos Bridges Paddling Trails

If you’re looking for kayaking in Waco, these two trails that share a boat ramp are perfectly situated in downtown. The Bosque River connects to Brazos Lake, so choose either one to explore! Spend 1-3 hours kayaking per trail. These are great trails for every skill level including beginners.

Fishing and watching for wildlife, like armadillos on riverbanks and turtles warming their shells in the sun, will keep you engaged with these paddling trails. Try for bass, smallmouth buffalo, carp, crappie, and three different types of catfish.

Paddle beneath several bridges on the Brazos Bridges Trail and enjoy being surrounded by nature on the banks. It’s a great place to get outdoors and enjoy the water.

Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge Paddling Trail

Fort Worth Nature Center protects 3600 acres and is known for its 20 miles of hiking trails, fossils, and resident bison herd. Lesser known is the 7-mile paddling loop within the reserve. This hidden treasure will delight all visitors looking for kayaking in Dallas/Fort Worth.

The Nature Center & Refuge is located only 10 miles from downtown Fort Worth. Make a reservation and pay your entry fee online. There are two launch points located in the reserve. The loop will take 2-3 hours and takes you on the Trinity River. This site is known to be excellent kayaking all year round.

American alligators are commonly spotted by kayakers! Enjoy paddling past abundant water plant life such as cattails, arrowhead, pondweed, water willow, and bulrushes. Keep an eye out for beavers, deer, snakes, turtles, raccoons, and more! If you’re looking to get outdoors, get away from a busy urban center, and put a kayak in the water, the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge is ideal.

Armand Bayou

Kayaking the Armand Bayou Paddling Trail is a great way to catch a glimpse of an alligator! The Armand Bayou is right in Pasadena within the greater Houston area. Located within a preserve, the paddling trail shows you coastal flatland forest as well as tallgrass prairie.

With more than 350 expansive miles of coastline, there’s no better way to take in the texas gulf coast than by water. boating may be the conventional way to make the journey, but for those looking for an exhilarating adventure and an intimate encounter with the coast’s natural treasures, nothing compares to a kayaking trip. whether you prefer a leisurely float with incomparable scenery or a challenging trail that will take you off the beaten path, grab a paddle and get ready for a kayaking experience you’ll never forget., paddle on the bay.

Kayakers interested in exploring unique plant life should head up the coast to Galveston . While Galveston is primarily known for its pristine beaches and historic homes, it’s also home to thousands of acres of healthy wetlands. With the largest seagrass habitat on the upper Texas coast, a number of trails are available to explore the beauty of the bay, including a 19-mile route that leads to more than 200 acres of seagrass. To make a day of it, take a break from your exploration and enjoy a picnic on the beach or take advantage of your surroundings and do some bird watching , as Galveston is one of the top birding destinations in the U.S. In fact, the Galveston Bay Estuary is the largest and most productive on the Texas coast with more than 500 species of birds residing, wintering, or migrating through southeast Texas.

For fishing enthusiasts, every anglers dream comes true in the popular Matagorda Bay. Most enthusiasts are familiar with the Matagorda Bay but may not have explored the bay in its entirety, as 35 miles of the shoreline is only accessible by boat. This virtually untapped area gives anglers the advantage and the element of surprise while sneaking up on redfish, trout and flounder. With more than five different trails, the kayaking possibilities of Matagorda Bay are endless.

For a guided tour, take part in the Matagorda Kayak Excursions offered by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) through the LCRA’s Matagorda Bay Nature Park. Excursions are offered on Saturdays during the spring and summer seasons and accommodate all skill levels as well as paddling instructions for beginners. If you’d prefer to venture out on your own, rent a kayak from the LCRA and explore the 1,600 acres of the nature park. Some of the Bay’s most popular trails include one that passes by the Lydia Ann, a historic lighthouse close to the wildlife refuge, and one that goes along the riverbanks the Karankawa Indians and early settlers called home.

Take In The Wildlife 

Formed three thousand years ago, the Laguna Madre in South Padre Island covers 130 miles of coast and is surrounded by the Lower Rio Grande Wildlife Refuge , the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge and the Padre Island National Seashore . You’re bound to catch some incredible views and see Texas wildlife roaming the shore, or get the catch of the day as the shallow waters are perfect for light spinning tackle.

For authentic trails that take you off the beaten path, look no further than Port O’Connor, a small fishing town and the “Best Kept Secret in Texas” on Matagorda Bay with several trails and islands marked by the locals. Be careful though, you’ll get more trail recommendations than you have time to paddle!  One of the most popular trails goes through Saluria Bay, where it’s common to see dolphins swimming and jumping through the deep waters. Another passes the Matagorda Island Lighthouse, which has been standing since 1852.

Texas Kayak & Canoe Paddling Trails

Texas has 57 paddling trials that are excellent for canoe or kayak trips, this page will list some of the Texas Paddling Trails, including the Coastal Kayaking Trails. Make sure you also check out our Texas Kayaking Page for lots more information on kayaking and canoeing in Texas.

The State of Texas is has recently started “The Texas Paddling Trails which is a new program to develop public inland and coastal paddling trails throughout the state and then support these trails with maps, signage and other information. These trails provide well-mapped accessible day trips in a variety of settings and for all levels of paddling experience. There are currently seven coastal paddling trails and one inland paddling trail, with several communities in the process of applying for participation in this program.” Texas Parks and Wildlife now has 72 designated Texas paddling trails, Mission Reach being the newest. Texas Coastal Kayaking Trails

Texas has over 3300 miles of tidal shoreline and a large portion of it is excellent for kayaking to explore the coast or bayous, to saltwater fish, or for eco tours. Texas Parks and Wildlife is continually adding trails, site assessments, and map. If you need more information on these paddling trails, please contact the Nature Tourism Coordinator. Thanks to TP&W, here is some information on the coastal trails from their website:

• South Bay Paddling Trail – The South Bay Paddling Trail follows the shores of South Bay in a loop of about eight miles. This shallow, subtropical body of water consists of approximately 3,500 surface acres, bounded on the south by the riparian edge of the Rio Grande, on the north by the Brownsville Ship Channel and associated spoil banks, and on the east by Brazos Island. It is located in Cameron County
• Christmas Bay Paddling Trail – The Christmas Bay Paddling Trail is a 19.1-mile circumnavigation of this pristine minor bay on the western end of the Galveston Bay complex. This small bay is unique since it supports the largest stand of seagrass (over 200 acres) on the upper Texas coast.
• Lighthouse Lakes Paddling Trail – The Lighthouse Lakes Paddling Trail was the very first Texas Paddling Trail and is actually a series of four loops ranging in length from 1.25 miles to 6.8 miles. The trails meander through an extensive black mangrove estuary, into sloughs and back lakes near the historic 1857 Lydia Ann Lighthouse on North Harbor Island. Paddlers can glide through mangroves and seagrass flats that provide outstanding bird watching and fishing for red drum, spotted seatrout and flounder in the maze of tidal channels and flats. • Mustang Island Paddling Trail – The Mustang Island Paddling Trail consists of the North Trail (8.5 miles), the Shamrock Loop (5.24 miles) and the Ashum Trail (6.8 miles). All of the trails follow the western shoreline of Mustang Island in Corpus Christi Bay, and cover some of the best shallow-water fishing areas in Texas. The Ashum Trail follows the shoreline of Corpus Christi Bay over a firm sand bottom and allows for outstanding bird watching as well as sight-casting opportunities. The Shamrock Loop skirts the beautiful, protected waters of Shamrock Cove, where it connects with the North Trail, which follows the shoreline to East Flats and then meanders through marsh and spoil islands to the Island Moorings marina in Port Aransas.
• Port O’Connor Paddling Trail – The Port O’Connor Paddling Trail consists of three trails totaling a little more than 25 miles. The Fishpond trail (12.3 miles) begins in Port O’Connor and travels through a number of bayous and cuts along the edge of Espiritu Santo Bay to Saluria Bayou, where it joins the 8.28-mile South Loop trail. From Mule Slough, the Fish Pond and North Loop (4.82 miles) trails continue east toward Sunday Beach on the Gulf of Mexico and to Lighthouse Cove, near the historic Matagorda Island Lighthouse. The scene of fighting during the Civil War (Confederate trench lines) still may be seen here. Camping is permitted

Trips that are canceled by Get Up And Go Kayaking due to inclement weather, will be rescheduled or refunded.

Reservations that are cancelled 72 hours or more before a scheduled trip will not be charged. Those that are cancelled or in need of rescheduling within the 72 hour window of departure time will not be refunded.

Trip Protection can be purchased, which allows you to cancel or reschedule your tour at any time for any reason up to 12 hours prior to your scheduled tour time. You will be reimbursed for the full amount of each ticket, less the cost of trip protection and processing fees. This policy does not apply to bookings made less than 12 hours in advance.

No-show participants will not be refunded. This includes showing up with less paddlers than the original amount booked for.

Get Up And Go Kayaking will not launch in unsafe weather conditions. Because of this, trips may need to be cancelled or rescheduled due to safety issues. If this is the case, your reservation will be refunded in full. We will not be held responsible for any reservation that you fail to keep due to an unforeseen circumstances. We also reserve the right to change or cancel any tours due to circumstances beyond our control. In this instance, Get Up And Go Kayaking can refund the tour price, not any other expenses that may have been incurred.

• Chevron down Is there a weight limit?

Yes! Our weight limit is no more than 250 pounds per person and no more than 425 pounds per 2 people that are in the same kayak. All of our kayaks are double kayaks. Unfortunately, our kayak manufacturer has given us this strict limit of 250 pounds per person and we cannot exceed this limit.

• Shoes you don’t mind getting wet; please note shoes are not permitted to be worn in the kayak, but will sit beside or behind you.

Our tours are made for any skill levels to participate, we will have basic tips and tricks to help you maneuver the waterways. Some paddling may be considered intermediate as we paddle against a 3mph current and some  mild  rapids, but we try our best to paddle at a pace that is convenient for every paddler! We do require all guests to stay with the group.

• Chevron down Are the kayaks tandem or solo?

Each of our kayaks are tandem (made for 2 paddlers) however, if you have an odd number of guests in your party we can easily reconfigure the kayak to accommodate solos.

• Chevron down Is the price per kayak or per person?

This premium experience is per person for the tour. We don’t rent out the kayaks or charge one fee for our kayaks. Doing so would make it unfair for solo kayakers or groups with uneven party numbers.

• Chevron down How far in advance should I book?

We highly recommend booking as far in advance as possible. We allow cancellations with full refunds up until 72 hours prior to the tour time. This allows you to book far in advance and cancel up until 3 days prior to the tour with no risk at all.

• Chevron down Is it appropriate to tip/gratuity our guide?

Tips are greatly appreciated. We like to say, “If you enjoyed your ride, tip your guide!”

Standard US gratuity is 20%!

• Chevron down Are children allowed?

Yes, but due to the experience level of the paddle being intermediate, we only allow children 6 years old and up to join. Each person under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or older in a kayak. Due to the level of experience needed for this adventure we cannot accommodate groups that have more children than adults in their party on the tour. We love having the entire family out and kids love this tour!

• Chevron down Can you swim?

Yes! We invite you to swim before or after your tour near our launch spot.  The water depth typically ranges between 4-5 feet, though variations may occur based on the specific section of the river and recent weather conditions.

• Chevron down Are pets allowed?

Yes! We love our furry friends! Please bring a towel for your pet to sit on during the tour to prevent any scratching of the kayak by their nails.

THE WILDLIFE

No, this is not seeing what “wildlife” is going to the local pub. In fact, there’s nothing quite like exploring the inlets and bays of the Gulf in clear kayaks with the water and seafloor below you illuminated clear as day. You will see numerous types of fish, crustaceans, birds, and, in some locations, curious submerged man-made objects. Any treasure hunters out there?

THE EXPERIENCE

Our tours are not just a fun way to cruise the beach in style, they’re a great way to learn more about the area, the environment, and perhaps even yourself. There’s something relaxing and even ethereal about being in the middle of the water when it’s pitch black with fish, crustaceans, and birds all around… then you hear a dolphin breach and take a breath. Time to give chase! It truly is a magical experience that never gets old!

Our completely seethrough kayaks are equipped with multiple LED bars that allow each paddler to choose their favorite color (or carousel of colors). Coordinate with your partner or not, it's like dual climate control in a car but for lights, it’s all part of the adventure!

When you rent a kayak for one of our tours, you can rest assured that you will be both entertained, fulfilled, and completely safe for the entirety of your glowing adventure. You will be provided with a life jacket, safety light, emergency whistle, and an experience that you won’t soon forget. Each vessel has a yearly certificate of inspection and 360° visibility light. We carry flare kits and an electric torch with two-mile visibility. Our audio distress signals satisfy requirements by a factor of two and our visual distress signals satisfy requirements by a factor of five.

Needless to say, we take your safety very seriously. Our gear and operations are compliant with both Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and United States Coast Guard regulations and best practices. We are the only clear kayak tour company on the Texas Coast that can say that!

If you think you’re excited to go on a glowing kayak tour at night, you should see our staff. You won’t find anyone more dedicated, knowledgeable, or friendly - they love what they do, and they love making sure you have an amazing trip! Having grown up on the coast, they also know all the best spots to find the coolest sights and you might be surprised at some of the things you might learn from them on your trip. Who knows, it might even help you land your next Wordle in less than three tries! And if you’re lucky, you might even have a fish jump into the boat with you for a photo opportunity! No Hidden Fees!  Rentals include boat, paddle, life jacket and shuttle.  You rent the boat for duration of your chosen section of river. 

Guided Trips

Have a professional guide lead you down the river.  You will receive basic paddling instruction and information about the river you are paddling.
