  • Convenient amenities include laundry facilities and a business center
  • Pets of almost all sizes welcome
  • Free Wi-Fi and parking

  • Maze-like layout can be difficult to navigate
  • Tiny fitness center has old equipment
  • Rooms have dated decor, and bathrooms show wear and tear

Bottom Line

Built in 1953, the Travelodge Hotel at LAX remains a true slice of Americana -- or it's just a dated motel-style property. Independently owned, this 147-room value hotel sits on lovely garden grounds, but rooms have tired decor and small bathrooms that show wear and tear. But with amenities like a free hot breakfast and adjacent 24-hour diner, free shuttle service to LAX (less than a mile away) and other points of interest, and an outdoor heated pool, there is signidicant value to be found here. The Travelodge is especially convenient for travelers in-between flights at LAX or with early morning or late-night departures.

Oyster Hotel Review

Budget-friendly motel-style property for those with missed flgihts.

Built in 1953 by Hyatt Van Dehn (of the Hyatt Hotels chain) but later purchased by a Mr. Pritzker via a deal scribbled on a napkin, the Travelodge LAX now exists as a relic to mid-20th century America. While it makes a genuine attempt to preserve the 1950s Americana vibe, it instead just feels dated to most. For a hotel less than a mile from a major international airport, however, the Travelodge is surprisingly serene, although planes can occasionally be heard by guests strolling the tropical garden grounds or taking a dip in the pool (but not in the rooms). The hotel's heated outdoor pool, in a classic angular shape, rests in the center courtyard surrounded by old-school plastic lounge chairs and sunbeds. Tall trees, shrubs, succulents, and massive bird's of paradise plants give the area a serene tropical desert vibe. Most of the guests at the hotel are international travelers, mainly from Europe, Asia, and Australia. Guests of Travelodge past have included Hollywood legends like Frank Sinatra and Ginger Rogers.

Less than a mile from LAX and convenient to many parts of Los Angeles

The Travelodge LAX is located off a major street near LAX, but the hotel grounds are far enough from the street to shield guests from traffic noise. Like most airport hotels, there isn't much around except other airport hotels, a few fast-food chains, gas stations, and strip malls. Often overlooked is the hotel's proximity to other areas of Los Angeles, making the Travelodge a nice option for those wanting a convenient place to stay during their vacation, not just looking for a hotel close to the airport. Downtown Los Angeles, home of the Staples Center, Arts District, Little Tokyo, Chinatown, and a few museums, is within a 15- to 20-minute drive. A jump on the westbound 10 freeway can have guests in either Santa Monica or Venice in 10 to 20 minutes -- or Malibu in 30 minutes. Other areas, like Beverly Hills and Hollywood, are within a 20- to 30-minute drive.

Dated rooms with tiny bathrooms have modern updates like flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi

The 147 comfortably sized retro rooms are clean and neat, but feature extremely dated-looking decor (apparently intentionally to maintain a 1950s Americana vibe) and tiny bathrooms. All rooms have tea- and coffee-making facilities, free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning, while larger rooms with double and king-size beds have mini-fridges and modern flat-screen TVs. Some may have balconies or patios overlooking the garden or pool area. While some may find the retro decor a little too convincing (and therefore dated), others may appreciate this preserved slice of Americana motel life, with the patterned curtains, industrial carpets, quilted bedding, and wooden furniture with gold accents.

Generous features for a value hotel

Perhaps giving a nod to travel times past, the Travelodge LAX delivers great value. The hotel offers some nice amenities, such as an outdoor heated pool, plenty of sunbeds and chairs, and lovely landscaped grounds. There is also a carpeted fitness center, but with dated decor and a tiny space, not many guests use it. A free hot breakfast includes sausage, waffles, and eggs.

The hotel is especially convenient for guests who have early morning or late-night flights, and it offers a 24-hour (and free!) airport shuttle that also makes stops at local shops and restaurants in the evening. The two-computer business center, conference rooms, and free Wi-Fi should suit business travelers. There is also an on-site convenience store with candy, film, and magazines, and an on-site laundry. The hotel is happy to arrange tours. The Travelodge also accepts pets of various sizes, species, and breeds for a daily fee -- and even has specially tiled pet rooms. And for those not needing a full overnight stay, the hotel offers a day-use rate.

Air Conditioner

Airport transportation, business center, dry cleaning, free breakfast, kids allowed, meeting / conference rooms, rental car service desk onsite, room service, supervised kids activities, swim-up bar.

Time Out says

This quintessential layover lodging is located a half-mile from the Los Angeles International Airport and trades the bells and whistles for the essentials: clean guest rooms, free Wi-Fi and complimentary continental breakfast.

For those nondiscriminatory travelers desperate for somewhere to rest their heads post-flight, this 147-room accommodation works fine. Like most airport hotels, Travelodge LAX provides a shuttle to and from the terminals free of charge. The non-smoking rooms are no nonsense. Expect the basics: bed, desk, fridge, air conditioning, cable TV (with HBO, at least), blow dryer and coffeemaker. The second-floor rooms have balconies that overlook the pool area. While not exactly picture perfect for social media purposes, the pool is clean and the chaise lounges are aplenty, which is all guests really need to relax after a long flight. But the best part about staying at Travelodge LAX is undoubtedly the free breakfast. The already inexpensive rates include a hefty continental spread. We’re talking the works: fresh waffles, sausages, juice, fresh fruit, toast, bagels, hot drinks, donuts and cereals. A full stomach makes waiting in those horrific security lines a little more tolerable, right?

Location : Travelodge LAX sits a few blocks from LA’s international airport. Nothing—besides the airport—is quite within walking distance, but there are plenty of food and entertainment options minutes away by car. Farther afoot are South Bay beaches and movie magic at Sony Pictures Studios. Nearby :

Venice Boardwalk : For the sea breeze and funky vibes, catch a ride to Venice. Without major traffic, you can get there in under 30 minutes.

Dockweiler State Beach : For the closest beach, head to this South Bay destination, located just over 4 miles away. Outfitted with picnic areas, fire rings, volleyball courts, restrooms, and showers, it’s got everything a beach-goer could ever need.

Sony Pictures Studios : Fans of The Wizard of Oz, Singing’ in the Rain, Spiderman , and Breaking Bad should visit this iconic studio lot. The leisurely walking tour runs about 2 hours.

The Forum : If your layover is long enough, catch a show at this legendary arena. The 17,500-seat space less than 3 miles from the hotel hosts blockbuster sets from the hottest musical acts from Drake to the Foo Fighters.

Three Weavers Brewing Company : This local brew pub pours some fantastic beer—from IPAs to stouts, tripels to pale ales. Drink at the bar or fill up a growler for back at the room.

Randy’s Donuts : No matter when you check in, this historic donut shop located 1.5 miles from the hotel will likely be open. Pick up an apple fritter or two.

Good for : With an airport shuttle service, free and filling hot breakfast, and cheap rates, Travelodge LAX is perfect for a quick overnight, especially for families. Cribs are complimentary and roll-away beds are inexpensive. For those with pets, up to three are allowed per room for an extra charge. Business travelers might be inclined to make use of the hotel’s meeting rooms.

Amenities : Free Wi-Fi, breakfast included, restaurant, pool, free airport transportation, business center, same day dry cleaning, fitness center, meeting room

Time Out tip : Those interested in hitting the town by car during their visit—but who are looking to save some money—should take advantage of the free airport shuttle and then rent a car during the day to spare the overnight parking fee. Right across the street are three rental car companies.

18 Time-Saving Travel Hacks for Los Angeles International Airport

Eric Rosen

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

The statistics are impressive: Nine terminals, 70 airlines, more than 80 million passengers annually. According to Airports Council International , Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the fifth-busiest in the world by passenger traffic.

It's also one of the most stressful airports to fly to, from, or through, thanks to aging infrastructure, poor planning and the sheer volume of people passing through its facilities.

LAX is currently in the midst of a $14 billion improvement project . Among the components finished already is the massive Tom Bradley International Terminal. Future upgrades will include links to the city's light-rail system, an automated people mover, a consolidated rental car facility and the renovation of several terminals. Construction is projected to last through 2023, though, so it will be some time before most passengers begin to see the benefits.

In the meantime, here are 18 tried and true hacks for getting through LAX as painlessly as possible, gleaned from my 15 years living in the city and transiting through the airport hundreds of times.

Photo by Shawn Ang on Unsplash

1. Depart from Arrivals LAX has two levels. The upper one is for departures and the lower one is for arrivals. Because most departing passengers get dropped off on the upper level, and both Uber and Lyft drivers are required to both drop off and pick up passengers from the Departures level, it tends to be much more congested than the lower Arrivals level. If you're not taking a rideshare service, ask your driver to drop you off down on Arrivals and just take the stairs, elevators, or escalators up one level for check-in and security.

2. Nobody Walks in LA (Except for This)

It can take as long to get from the entrance of the airport to a terminal as it does to get from West Hollywood, where I live, all the way down to the airport. We are talking 45 minutes in some cases. If traffic is hairy when you get there and you don't mind walking, consider hopping out of your car or shuttle as soon as you reach the terminals.

The airport is U-shaped , so Terminal 1 is located across the airport from Terminals 7 and 8, Terminal 2 is across from Terminals 5 and 6, Terminal 3 is located across from Terminal 4, and Tom Bradley International Terminal is down at the very far end.

It only takes about 10-15 minutes to walk from either Terminal 1 or 8 to Tom Bradley International Terminal, and only about 5-10 minutes to walk across the short-term lots that are in the middle of the U. So if your flight is departing out of Terminal 6 and traffic is at a standstill, you can get out at Terminal 2 and walk across from there.

Use the airport's U shape to your benefit. Image courtesy of LAWA.

3. Terminal Turn-Off

Likewise, there are actually turn-offs on the Departures level that skip the bottom of the U and go straight from Terminal 1 to 7 and from Terminal 2 to 5 so you can avoid the bottleneck that usually forms around Tom Bradley and Terminal 4.

4. Proximity Parking

The cheapest LAX parking is $12 per day at the public Lot C, which is connected to the airport via shuttle bus service. However, the lot fills up quicker than ever these days, so I've been using SpotHero to reserve parking places at other lots in advance. That way, I don't have the anxiety of not knowing whether I'll find a space before my departure time. Other travelers have suggested Pavemint , which is like a parking share where you pay someone for their parking spot at rates that are usually much cheaper than airport parking.

My other main tip is to park at the Park 'N Fly lot, from which you can easily walk to several terminals. You can also score a 15% discount by showing your Southwest Rapid Rewards membership card at checkout, and there's usually a discount for AAA members as well (it's currently 15%).

5. Connection Convenience

Though LAX has nine separate terminal buildings, many are connected airside, so you can clear security at one then either walk or shuttle to another. Apart from connecting between different airlines, this is mainly if you want to take advantage of quicker security lines at any of the terminals, which you can check using an app like MiFlight . Now that Tom Bradley has TSA PreCheck , though, wait times there should improve a lot.

Here's the short version of terminal connection map: Delta's two terminals, Terminals 2 and 3, are connected airside via shuttles. Tom Bradley International Terminal and Terminals 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are all connected airside via walkways. TBIT is connected to Terminal 4 (American Airlines) via an above-ground passage. Terminals 4, 5 and 6 are connected via an underground tunnel, and Terminals 6-8 are connected above ground. Terminal 1 (Southwest) is not connected to the others.

6. Bus Hopping

Alternatively, the airport runs transfer buses down on the Arrivals level that take passengers between the terminals. However, the Lot C Parking bus also makes stops at every terminal, so if you're transiting from Terminal 2 to Terminal 7, for instance, you can just hop on that one instead if it comes faster.

Walking through TBIT to the Air France counters.

7. Tom Bradley International Terminal…Adjacent

Some international airlines that operate out of TBIT actually have check-in desks at Terminal 3, so don't waste time heading to TBIT first only to have to retrace your steps later. They include Avianca, Copa, Interjet and Virgin Australia.

8. Get TSA PreCheck

No, this is not an LAX-specific hack, but it pays off in spades specifically at this airport because security lines can wind their way the entire length of a terminal and along the outdoor walkways that link them to the short-term parking lots. TSA PreCheck lines , on the other hand, are usually extremely fast. The most I can recall ever waiting was 10 minutes and that was a single time over the busy holiday travel season. For the most part, TSA PreCheck lines take about two-three minutes and the agents working there are competent and helpful. If you don't have TSA PreCheck, or Global Entry, which includes PreCheck, you can get the application fee for either refunded if you pay it with credit cards including the Capital One Venture, Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card , the Platinum Card from American Express , Chase Sapphire Reserve and many more .

lax travel lodge

9. …Or CLEAR

There are now CLEAR lanes at Terminals 1 – 7, where you can breeze right past TSA agents to expedited security lines. Though annual membership usually costs $179, Delta SkyMiles members can get it for $99 per year; Silver, Gold and Platinum Medallions get it for $79 per year; and Diamond Medallions get it for free. You can score annual membership for $79 just by having a co-branded Delta Amex card (which come with varying levels of complimentary elite status) like the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express , the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express , or the Delta Reserve® Credit Card from American Express .

10. Layover Luggage

Have a long layover and don't want to wheel your luggage around with you? You can reserve storage at LAX Luggage Storage for relatively reasonable rates that range between $10-$15 per day. You can drop off and pick up your bags at the facility yourself, though if you opt for the more convenient terminal curbside pick up and drop off, it's $5 per item each way.

11. Pop In to In-N-Out

In-N-Out Burger is a SoCal institution. The one near LAX also has picture-perfect views of the flight path into the airport for the real AvGeeks out there . If you have a few hours between flights, you can enjoy your planespotting with a burger and feel like you got a real LA experience. But skip taking a taxi or Uber. Instead, you can hop on the shuttle for the Parking Spot garage on Sepulveda, then walk the 100 or so feet from there.

LOS ANGELES, CA - AUGUST 02: An Air Canada Rouge flight is seen above the In-N-Out Burger restaurant Sepulveda Boulevard arriving at Los Angeles International Airport on Saturday, August 02, 2014 in Los Angeles, California. More than 1,500 flights depart and arrive at LAX on a daily basis, ranking it 6th busiest in the world, and 2nd busiest in the United States. (Photo by Kent Nishimura/The Denver Post via Getty Images)

12. Eastside Expense

A taxi or rideshare to the Eastside can cost well over $60. If you're not in a rush, though, catch the FlyAway Bus from your terminal to Union Station in Downtown LA for just $9.75 and then take an Uber or Lyft to your final destination from there.

13. That's a Relief

For those traveling with a pet or emotional support animal , LAX has just three pre-security animal relief areas, but also offers them airside at every terminal except 8, per this map .

14. Lounging Around

Unfortunately, the Priority Pass access you get with cards like the Platinum Card from American Express , the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Citi Prestige won't get you into too many lounges at LAX. Even the ones you can access , like the Alaska Lounge in Terminal 6, often fill up and turn away Priority Pass members. However, Priority Pass will score you free food at Rock & Brews at Terminal 1 and P.F. Chang's at TBIT.

Other than that, I'd suggest getting creative with lounge access policies. For instance, the American Airlines Flagship Lounge at Terminal 4 lets you in if you're flying first or business on American's transcontinental and international flights. But you can also enter if you're an AAdvantage Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro, or Platinum member on a qualifying international flight on American or Oneworld airlines; or if you have Oneworld Emerald or Sapphire status (excluding if you earned it through AAdvantage) and are traveling in any cabin on any flight marketed and operated by American or a Oneworld partner. Likewise, you can access the Qantas First Class Lounge at TBIT if you're flying first class on a flight with a Qantas flight number or on an international Oneworld flight; if you have Oneworld Emerald status (AAdvantage Executive Platinum) and are flying on a Oneworld-operated and marketed flight.

lax travel lodge

Although your Star Alliance Gold membership won't get you into the United Club if you earned that status with United, it will get you into the Star Alliance Lounge at TBIT if you're flying a Star Alliance carrier that day, so you can head there first, then take the airside connectors to United's terminals (7 & 8) from there.

15. Pay For The Private Suite

The Private Suite at LAX is a small remote terminal south of the main airport. It has a shared lounge area and 13 individual suites with their own living rooms, pantries, dining spaces and restrooms. Amenities and services include private security screening, pre-ordered meal service, chauffeur service to your plane and even in-suite salon and spa services. Pricing is exorbitant, at $3,500-$4,000 per group for non-members. However, United now offers all passengers the opportunity to purchase access starting at $375 one-way and $700 round-trip for up to four guests on domestic flights, and $500/$900 one-way/round-trip for international travelers. At under $100 per person, this experience can't be beat.

lax travel lodge

Like many airports, LAX has been busy installing water-bottle filling stations in its terminals. So skip the expensive bottled water at airport stores and bring your own refillable travel bottle instead. That way, you're cutting down on single-use plastic as well.

17. Grab 'N Go

Service at the restaurants and stores at LAX is, shall we say, less than expedient. Luckily, the Grab app lets you preorder and pay for items at 18 participating restaurants so far, including locations of Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Wolfgang Puck Express, Loteria Grill and Ford's Filling Station so you can just pick up your items on your way to your gate without waiting.

18. Rideshare Response Time

Given the traffic conditions around LAX, it's not unusual for Ubers and Lyfts to take 20 minutes to get to certain terminals for arrival pick ups. Assuming you're not waiting for checked luggage, I'd suggest ordering your rideshare as soon as you're off the airplane. You will have more than enough time to walk through the terminal and out to the Departures level to catch your car. In fact, I've never missed a ride doing so, and often still end up waiting several minutes. Surge pricing varies dramatically between the two apps, too, so if the cost of one is sky high, try ordering a car from the other.

Roof Deck with seating and drinks, view of city

Welcome to Hotel 850 SVB, a Member of Design Hotels™

Intimate, elegant, and timeless in west hollywood’s heart..

Inspired by Europe’s residential-style properties, where home comforts blend seamlessly with luxury, 850 SVB presents a new kind of LA experience. This is an intimate retreat, with old and new coming together to create an elegant, lived-in timelessness in West Hollywood. The building's bungalow facade dates to 1918, while a new addition makes the two structures feel as if they were always one. Well-known English interior designer, Rita Konig uses original artwork, hardwood floors, luxury linens, and marble bathrooms as a canvas upon which to create her “undone” yet chic look. The living room is perfect for relaxing or working. The al fresco roof deck awes with stunning city views.

Travel | father, two children identified as victims in fiery fatal pleasanton car crash, travel | four bay area properties awarded 3 ‘keys’ from new michelin hotel guide, eleven hotels earned the top three-key distinction, in a list that focused on major markets rather than being truly comprehensive..

A tree house room at the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur.

By Nikki Ekstein | Bloomberg

Last year, when World’s 50 Best issued its first global ranking of hotels, only two properties in the US made the cut: the Equinox and Aman New York hotels, both in Manhattan.

Now Michelin has arrived stateside, in its second-ever presentation of “keys”—a new system from the eponymous tiremaker that’s doling out one, two or three key emblems, like its restaurant stars but to the world’s worthiest hotels.

Out of more than 1,000 luxury hotels across the country, 11 were awarded three keys. The winners were all in California and New York, from Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur to Canyon Ranch Woodside and the Whitby Hotel in Midtown. Aman New York, echoing its position on World’s 50 Best, was also included; Equinox, meanwhile, received no keys at all.

Importantly, keys were only distributed to hotels in seven primary markets across the US where the Michelin Guide also reviews restaurants: New York City, California, Chicago, Florida, Colorado, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. Michelin says next year’s ceremony will expand to include more of the US.One key denotes a “special” stay, two make it “exceptional” and three reflect hotels that are “extraordinary.”

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, has described the criteria for these awards in highly subjective terms. Earlier this month he told Bloomberg that these most exceptional properties will be judged based off “the experience” alone. Rather than requiring them to adhere to certain definitions—like having a spa, pool or minimum staff-to-guest ratios—the hotel experience “has to be memorable and singular in a way that will give people a feel for local character,” he explained. At the awards ceremony, he built upon that sentiment. “We’re not a checklist of amenities,” he said.

“We have boots on the grounds, inspectors working the field in every country, leaving no stone unturned and also looking for discoveries, new openings, in order to be fully up to date in their recommendation,” Poullennec said in remarks during the key presentation.

The intimate US ceremony, held at New York City’s Museum of Art and Design, is the second such presentation by Michelin this month, with the first-ever awards being handed out to French hotels on April 8, in Paris. At that event, 24 hotels were awarded three keys, including five of Paris’ 12 “palace” hotels. And more such ceremonies are coming: Awards will be announced in Spain next week and in Italy on May 7, before heading to Japan in July.

To some US hoteliers, Michelin’s recognition holds outsize importance. In background conversations leading up to the event, owners of several new independent hotels in major cities held hope that earning multiple keys could help them compete with better-established luxury brands such as Aman, Rosewood or Ritz-Carlton. That may be the case for the boutique London-based Firmdale Hotels, whose two New York hotels, the Whitby and the Crosy Street Hotel, both earned three keys.

Others in more remote locations expected that any honor could help them lure talent—places like Twin Farms in Barnard, Vermont, or Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennessee, for example. Unfortunately the prospect will have to wait.

It’s not that Michelin is the only designation that consumers can use to parse quality hotels. Walk into many of the key-awarded hotels, and you might see a Forbes’ five-star plaque—that honor was given to some 80 luxury hotels in the US in 2023, and American travel magazines dole out similar recognitions each year. But Michelin’s reputation spans much of the globe, in a way that the others do not.

“Our users say that when they are looking for places to stay, they will spend on average 10 hours on 10 different platforms to do so,” Poullennec said at the ceremony. “They’re at a loss. There is a demand for real recommendations and independent ones, that you can trust and go beyond brand labels, and that apply from one country to another—a global reference.”

Still, there are many skeptics. Michelin’s entry into the hotel market comes at a time when the company is looking for new revenue streams and attracting criticism for expanding its Michelin Dining Guides in a way that prioritizes destinations with big marketing budgets, even when they don’t have the restaurant quality to back it up.

The Atlanta Michelin Guide, for instance was sponsored by the local tourism board in a deal worth $1 million, but no restaurant in the city earned more than a single star. Its inclusion as one of the first destination in the hotel keys presentation will come as a surprise to luxury hotel afficcionados; the city is not widely known as a hub for luxury hotels, and only three hotels in the city were included, each with one key.

Pouillennec tells Bloomberg the overlap is because restaurant critics need places to sleep; that made it logistically feasible to prioritize these places. Although, as he told Bloomberg earlier in Paris, they’re not excluding the possibility of sponsored hotel guides in the future.

Also leading to skepticism about the awards is Michelin’s acquisition of Tablet Hotels, which took place in 2018 for an undisclosed sum; it’s a curated booking platform for luxury and boutique hotels that features some 6,000 hotels globally and around 950 properties in the US.

The technology gives Michelin a place where it can facilitate bookings for its recommended hotels, earn commissions from them, and also collect feedback from guests about their stays. As a result, some hoteliers have wondered whether Michelin has prioritized Tablet properties in its inspections; the company says reviews are completely independent and carried out by full-time employees, but adds that every hotel it recognizes is immediately bookable on its website.

“Nothing matters more than the independence of our recommendations,” Poullennec said.

In all, 124 hotels in the US were recognized with keys. Here is the full list of winners divided by market:

On April 24, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide revealed the brand new list of One, Two, and Three Key hotels in the United States. In this first ever announcement of MICHELIN Keys in the United States, hotels in Atlanta, California, Chicago, Colorado, Florida, New York, and Washington DC were eligible for the distinction. This announcement of the most outstanding hotels in the country comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting. Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys are our most outstanding hotels. In total, the 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in the United States includes 11 Three Key hotels, 33 Two Key hotels, and 80 One Key hotels. Want to know more about the MICHELIN Key? The Aman New York — New York, New York

The Three Key Club in New York City

Expect: The highest luxury and impeccable design in Soho, Midtown, and the Financial District. Within the small club of Three Key hotels in the United States, four make their home in New York City. The Aman New York (Midtown) and Casa Cipriani (the Financial District) both make use of glamorous Beaux Arts buildings, the former a gold-crowned skyscraper in Midtown, the latter a glamorously restored ferry terminal at the very southern tip of Manhattan. Each is a refuge: an elegant, painstakingly designed escape from bustling city life. Meanwhile, two Firmdale hotels round out the list of Three Key hotels in New York City. Each is a quintessential example of the style and execution of the group’s co-owner and interior designer, Kit Kemp. Jewels on the Coast: Up and Down California

Its sheer breadth of size and variety means it’s no surprise to announce California as the state with the most Key hotels in America. Here, we’ll point you towards coastal gems like the sublime architectural achievements in Big Sur ( Post Ranch Inn and Ventana ), beachside luxuries in Santa Monica (in particular: the newly opened Georgian ), and wine country favorites like SingleThread and the Madrona . What we love: how each one of these hotels opens the door to the very best of their locations — and gives us a look at each setting through fresh eyes.

Across America: The Golden Age of Celebrity

Our French Keys bask in the tradition of ancient vineyards, stone chateaus, and historic palaces. In the United States, we see a different tradition. In Los Angeles, places like Chateau Marmont , the Paramour Estate , Sunset Tower , and the Charlie date back to guests and residents as illustrious as Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. These are spaces that play ingeniously with their history, even as they forge ahead with cutting-edge amenities and experiences. But it’s not just California. New York’s historic artist hotspot, the Hotel Chelsea , once hosted Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol. Today, it decorates every space with art donated by former residents. Look too to the Chicago Athletic Association , a former member’s club for 20th century business magnates and athletes — now among the city’s most impressive and vibrant hotels. Los Angeles hotel famous for Pretty Woman goes Back To The Future - by offering a world-first HOLOGRAPHIC concierge service

Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel occupies a building that found fame with the movie Pretty Woman, but now it's going Back To The Future - by offering a world-first holographic concierge service.

Hotel staff can now be live-beamed into the legendary property's penthouse and presidential suites to offer customer service tips and advice via a portable tabletop holographic communications device called 'The M' from Los Angeles-based Proto .

The hotel's General Manager, Reed Kandalaft, explained that guest-experience team members stand in front of a camera in a guest room that has been converted into a 'studio', with their likeness then beamed into one of the guest specialty suites.

He said: 'The M makes the digital experience "real" and redefines the way we work with efficient and engaging solutions, allowing the guest experience team to show and see emotion behind every interaction.'

Guests will designate a time for the interaction, which takes place on a 21.5in screen, with staff and guest being able to see each other and communicate in real time 'to review the day's itinerary, capabilities within the suite and so much more', said Proto.

Director of Guest Experience Serge Sturbois said: 'We are elated to provide our guests with yet another way to communicate with us. Based on the guest preference, we can communicate in person, through the Four Seasons Chat, text, a call and now by beaming via hologram into their room.'

Mr Kandalaft said: 'That’s why so many guests stay with us. They know we provide our guests with the latest in technology, experiences and design.

'Introducing The M is yet another way we continue to pioneer in this ever-evolving landscape.'

The hotel building found global fame when it featured in 1990's Pretty Woman, with Julia Roberts ' character Vivian and Richard Gere 's Edward staying in what back then was The Regent Beverly Wilshire.

Four Seasons bought the hotel in 1992.

The hotel's GM Reed Kandalaft added that the hotel will explore 'future capabilities', including 'projecting guests to remote meetings, providing shopping options with luxury retailers on Rodeo Drive, hosting business speakers, and offering entertainment and fitness content'

But he said that 'right now we are hyper-focused on ensuring this roll-out exceeds our guests' expectations'.

Will the technology appear in other Four Seasons properties?

He said: 'We certainly expect to see properties around the world lean into live beaming due to our launch.'

Guest room at the Kodo Hotel in downtown Los Angeles

Add Kodō Hotel to the list of the best and most unique places to stay in Los Angeles .

Modern, minimalist and boasting just nine rooms, the boutique hotel opened earlier this year in downtown L.A.’s Arts District along South Santa Fe Avenue just below 7th Street. Directly across the street from Warner Music Group’s L.A. offices, Kodō Hotel is tucked away on the second floor of a former Beaux Arts-style fire station that dates back to 1927.

Now the nearly 100-year-old Engine Co. No. 17 building has been renovated and reborn with a completely different vibe, trading in boho cool for a Japanese-ryokan-inspired aesthetic. Designed by M Royce Architecture in collaboration with gry space , the rooms feature polished concrete floors, low-to-the-ground king-sized and queen-sized beds and high loft-like ceilings. A study in grays, beiges and whites, the hotel is a spartan but serene respite from the urban-core streets of the Arts District.

The showpiece of each guest accommodation is the bathroom, which seems to float in the middle of each room, featuring a geometric freestanding sink in dark stone, a beautifully lit circular hanging mirror and a shower. The effect is both sculptural and sensuous.

Guests should be aware that the hotel does not have an elevator and the hotel rooms are reached only via a tall staircase. Rooms, starting at $218 a night, are available at kodohotel.com and booking.com .

The property’s ground-floor Kodō restaurant serves everything from sushi rolls and omakase platters to salads and main dishes like Uni-mentaiko Cream Pasta with cured egg yolk. It features minimalist meets earthy design in keeping with the aesthetic of the hotel, as well as an outdoor patio and a private dining room that’s located in the fire station’s former handball court.

More dining options located nearby in the Arts District are Hauser & Wirth’s Manuela restaurant, Korean-American Yangban (right next door to the hotel), French restaurant Camphor (which has one of the best burgers in L.A. ), Mexican hotspot La Cha Cha Chá, chef Enrique Olvera’s Damian, The Factory Kitchen and Baroo.

Kodō Hotel is the brainchild of Boulevard Hospitality Group, which also owns the historic Japanese restaurant Yamashiro overlooking Hollywood, as well as such spots as Durango Cantina on Melrose and the three-level Cork & Batter in Inglewood. Boulevard recently launched Nice & Sweet , a new bakery and coffee shop in Hollywood, located at 7061 W. Sunset Boulevard.
