GMAC Announces The MBA Tour Virtual Events

New algorithm and machine learning unveiled for use in tour and future events, creating data-driven interactions between schools and candidates.

RESTON, Va. (June 10, 2020) — The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), a global association of leading graduate business schools, acquired The MBA Tour  in 2019 to foster more strategic dialogue across the tour circuit. Consistent with that mission, GMAC today announced a series of The MBA Tour virtual events that will further leverage GMAC’s data and digital assets. A core component will be small group MeetUps driven by a unique algorithm and machine learning that will create more data-driven interactions between business schools and prospective candidates at a time when global travel is greatly restricted.

“Integrating The MBA Tour model with GMAC’s data science platform enables us to develop smarter, more innovative ways to help business schools grow their candidate pipeline while also providing programs with more intuitive, data-driven solutions to meet their recruiting needs,” said Petia Whitmore, Managing Director of The MBA Tour. “That mission doesn’t stop in a COVID-19 environment as the need to build a robust and diverse pipeline remains a critical issue facing business schools around the world, while candidates still have a need to connect and learn about the schools they’re considering; GMAC recognizes the critical role we play in that process.”

Data Science and Machine Learning

The MBA Tour virtual events utilize an advanced matching algorithm and GMAC-proprietary data compiled through decades of candidate engagement and research. The data is overlaid with specific needs of business schools and when integrated with school preferences, behavioral insights, demographics, and psychographics will create smarter, and more effective discussions between business schools and candidates.

This new matching technology will be launched beginning July 7, expanding a candidate’s view into the schools they’re exploring and increasing the number and variety of schools they speak with at these events.

Virtual Tour Format

Beginning in July and running through October, The MBA Tour virtual events will be offered on a robust digital platform, delivering the personal engagement that business schools and candidates require in an environment where in-person meetings are greatly limited. Attendees gain access to individualized MeetUps, opportunities to engage with schools, and exposure to MBA Talks and sponsor sessions developed to educate and inform.

Starting July 7, virtual tours will be held in 48 cities across the United States, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, Europe Middle East and Africa. GMAC continues to monitor the impacts associated with COVID-19 and will make future event determinations based on health, safety, and travel considerations.

Registration is now open for schools and attendees that wish to participate.

Candidates and schools can visit thembatour.com/virtual to learn more about The MBA Tour virtual events.

The Graduate Management Admission Council ™ (GMAC ™ ) is a mission-driven association of leading graduate business schools worldwide. Founded in 1953, we are committed to creating solutions for business schools and candidates to better discover, evaluate and connect with each other. We work on behalf of the schools and the graduate management education community, and guide candidates on their journey to higher education, to ensure that no talent goes undiscovered.

GMAC provides world-class research, professional development opportunities and assessments for the graduate management education industry, designed to advance the art and science of admissions. Owned and administered by GMAC, the Graduate Management Admission Test ™ (GMAT ™ ) exam is the most widely used graduate business school assessment, recognized by more than 7,000 programs worldwide. Other GMAC assessments include the NMAT by GMAC ™ (NMAT ™ ) exam, for entrance into graduate management programs in India, Nigeria, the Philippines, and South Africa, and the Executive Assessment (EA), which supports the admissions needs of more than 160 programs around the world.

Our flagship portal for graduate management education resources and information, www.mba.com, receives over 7 million visits a year and features the Program Finder matching tool and GMASS ™ search service, a data-driven technology that helps connect candidates and business schools.  These platforms are part of GMAC Connect, a suite of services that help schools attract students through recruiting solutions that marry our market intelligence, data, reach and candidate touchpoints.

Subsidiaries of GMAC include UK-based online publishing company BusinessBecause, a content-rich destination that helps students identify the right-fit business schools during the critical consideration and selection phases of their journey, and The MBA Tour, which supports business schools’ global recruiting efforts by organizing business education-focused events around the world.

GMAC is a global organization with offices in China, India, Singapore, United Kingdom and the United States. To learn more about our work, please visit www.gmac.com .

WINTER QUARTER 2023 PROGRAMS

mba global tour

MBA Study Tour to Israel & the West Bank

Price : $3300

Dates : March 12-23, 2023 (depart from Seattle on March 11)

Faculty : Tracey Seslen

Credits : Optional 2 credits of IBUS 570 during Winter ‘23

Come to Israel with Dr. Tracey Seslen to better understand the Israeli model for business innovation and strategies for responsible, sustainable, and inclusionary business activities. Israel leads the world in terms of startups per capita and R&D investment as a fraction of GDP and has become one of the most sought-after locations for technology companies going global – amazing statistics for a water-starved, immigrant-heavy country of 8.5 million people that has existed for a mere 70 years. The tour plans to include company and cultural visits in and around Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa, the West Bank, the Dead Sea, and, tentatively, a daytrip to the archaeological site in Petra, Jordan.

MBA Study Tour to Portugal

Faculty : Andy Hafenbrack

Come to Portugal with Dr. Andy Hafenbrack to meditate on what it means to live the good life. Portugal has become a leading lifestyle destination for vacations and digital nomads. The quality of life in Portugal is extremely high in terms of the food, wine, weather, sightseeing/topography, colorful architecture, general aesthetics, and the slow pace. We’ll consider what it means to create a life that is worth being mindful of, as well as how to savor the life we have. We will learn from organizations in the hospitality, food and beverage, fashion, sports, and art industries to learn how they make daily life pleasurable, meaningful, and beautiful. The tour plans to spend time in Porto, the Douro Valley, and Lisbon.

mba global tour

MBA Study Tour to South Africa

Faculty : Shaosong Ou

Come to South Africa with Dr. Shaosong Ou to explore the country’s unique business opportunities, challenges, and rich cultural heritage while spending time in Cape Town and Johannesburg. You’ll meet with a wide variety of companies, from small start-ups led by driven entrepreneurs to multinational organizations with familiar names. A unique feature of this program is that it includes a weekend safari in Kruger National Park.

SPRING QUARTER ’23 PROGRAMS

mba global tour

Global Consulting Project: India (virtual)

Dates : Spring Quarter class + virtual consulting

Faculty : Jennifer Koski

Credits : 2 credits of IBUS 579

Program cost : $0 fees, credits may incur a cost for some students

This course allows students to apply high-level MBA strategy skills in a unique cultural context – among grassroots entrepreneurs in the state of Gujarat in India through virtual global consulting projects with the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA). With 1.9 million members, SEWA is a global NGO that organizes collective representation for poor female laborers from the informal economy. SEWA’s goals for its members are full employment and self-reliance. Students will have the opportunity to see how MBA business analysis and leadership skills translate to a vastly different context.

Words from our Alumni

Jerard scorgie, map - 2009, pdm - 2013, mba - 2014.

The defining moment for me was not so much that we were able to turn the business around, but rather the ability to practically apply skills learned while studying. Having business acumen and skills is one thing, practically applying them and realising business shifts is a new experience altogether.

Mohammed Majam

Map - 2008, mba - 2016.

That confidence to believe that my age won’t define me has stuck with me and opened doors in my career I could never have imagined. I ended up finishing as the top student for the year and have never looked back.

Boitumelo Mojapelo

I made lifelong connections and my MBA really enhanced my brand as a professional.

Ewen Cameron

Pdm - 2011 & mba - 2014.

My WBS qualifications gave me the self-confidence to tackle tough work and life situations with a clear and open mindset.

Lebogang Ramokgopa

My MBA was a new and exciting period in my life because it opened my thinking to the crucial areas of accounting, finance, marketing and operations management

Sifiso Dabengwa

Doing an MBA was demanding, but not that difficult, because if you are willing to meet the demands, nothing is impossible. It created new opportunities for changing my career

Patrick Klostermann

Pdba - 2020 & mba - 2021.

The PDBA gave me confidence in multiple disciplines and changed the way I view the world, business, and those I live and work with. The growth I experienced was tangible and intoxicating and has only intensified my hunger for knowledge. What you put in is what you get out!

Gender, culture and human rights in india – program cancelled.

Led by Alka Kurian and Camille Walsh, IAS | 5 credits | $3,300 program fee Engage with local community organizations to examine the systemic and interlocking structures of power and inequality in India. Using the lens of feminist and postcolonial perspectives on contemporary globalization, the program examines the ways in which historically embedded and modern-day internal and global conflicts, and forces of colonialism, neo-liberalism, capitalism, and Western imperialism, have resulted in the denial of fundamental rights of some of the most vulnerable sections of the Indian society. The 5-credit program begins with bi-weekly Winter Quarter classes on the Bothell campus, followed by two weeks of site visits in Delhi and Mumbai in India. Online assignments and three debrief meetings at UW Bothell will take place during Spring Quarter. Learn more about Gender, Culture and Human Rights in India. This program was cancelled .

MBA Global Study Tour to India

Led by Surya Pathak, Business | 4 credits of B BUS 591 | Tuition + ~$3,200 program fee This course is designed to enhance student knowledge and appreciation for global leadership, business methods and models across cultures. Summer 2024: Deadline extended to Feb 22

The politics of soccer in spain and beyond (summer term a).

Led by Ron Krabill, IAS | 12 credits | $5,460 program fee Consider soccer as a political and cultural phenomenon, examining the ways in which the sport functions as a site for political contestation on local, regional, national, and international scales.  While Spain will be a key site of this exploration – with the women’s national team World Cup victory in 2023, the scandals and protests surrounding the Spanish federation’s leadership and its lack of support for women’s soccer, the recent successes of the men’s national team, and a famous rivalry between two of the best club teams in the world (with political overtones involving the Franco dictatorship and Catalonian independence) – the course will also explore the politics of soccer elsewhere, including human rights violations and corruption surrounding recent and future World Cups, the European Championships (Euros 2024) which will be occurring during the course, the upcoming Paris Olympics, and the exploitation of (often very young) athletes from across the globe.  This course will begin in Madrid and end in Barcelona, but the vast majority of the course will take place in León.

Participants will earn the following credits:

  • BIS 480 – International Study Abroad: The Politics of Soccer in Spain and Beyond (5 credits), SSc
  • BSPAN 196/296 (depending on language level of individual student) – Spanish Language, Culture, and History (5 credits), A&H
  • BIS 498 Undergraduate Research (2 credits), SSc

Japan: World War II through Film

Led by David Goldstein, IAS | Sept 4 – 24 | 5 credits BIS 464 (A&H), fulfills Tier 1 electives for MCS | $4,900 program fee Now close allies, Japan and the United States were bitterly at war during World War II, from the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor that drew the United States into the war, to the American atomic bombs that devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki and forced Japan to surrender. In this Exploration Seminar, we will study how each side depicted the other in its cinematic propaganda, and how documentary and feature films produced in Japan and in the United States after the war told the story of the conflict that changed world history. Through our examination of films and other popular media, we will pursue key questions: How did the Japanese and American governments muster public support for the war? How did the war and its aftermath, including the American occupation of Japan, forever change both nations? Why did the United States intern 120,000 Japanese Americans during the war? The program, in partnership with faculty and students at the University of Tokyo, will include a trip to the Peace Museum in Hiroshima, a city that literally arose from the ashes into a splendid, vibrant city, as well as visits to historical and cultural sites in and near Tokyo.

Jordan – Sustainable Biotechnology Skills-Based Collaborative Learning Program

Led by Salwa Al-Noori, STEM-Bio This new program centers the strengths and challenges of refugee populations. It especially welcomes UW students who are recent immigrants and refugees themselves. Students will practice sampling water for invasive species and learn about environmental DNA sampling techniques with experts in New Zealand. Credits may fulfill capstone requirement for ESS, CRS and Env Science majors.

Spain: Hacking the Future: Cybersecurity  and AI Challenges

Led by Mike Stiber and Jeff Kim, STEM-CSS | Aug 18 – Sept 14 | 5 credits of CSS 390 | $4,650 program fee Spain’s membership in the EU and NATO presents opportunities for UW students to broaden their thinking beyond technology topics and beyond the context of US government and industry. Company visits and guest lectures will explore current challenges in software development and expose students to career pathways.

Thailand: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Southeast Asia

Led by James Reinnoldt, Business | 5 credits of BBUS 490 CSR refers to a company’s responsibility beyond its traditional shareholders; companies need to be responsive to the needs of a broader group of stakeholders that are directly and indirectly impacted by their actions: shareholders, consumers, employees, business partners, suppliers, and local communities. This program provides students with the opportunity to observe firsthand how companies in Thailand and Cambodia are responding to these challenges through CSR programs in partnerships with NGOs, government agencies and local communities. Housing in hotels with breakfast, a few other meals, and all local activities and excursions are included in the program fee.

International MBA Begins its 2022-2023 Global Tour

Published on 2022.10.28

Do you dream of traveling the world? Immersing yourself in other cultures, foods, languages, and customs? Those driven both by their career and by their love of new experiences are the perfect candidates for emlyon business school's International MBA (IMBA) program !

Matteo Pedriglieri, the IMBA Recruitment Manager, is charged with helping interested candidates from their first inquiry, to obtaining their visa, to officially welcoming them on campus in Lyon, France . He describes his role as, “presenting the school and the program to all interested individuals and answering their questions and guiding them through the whole application process .” Matteo actively hosts informational webinars , is active on LinkedIn with all things related to the program and its participants, and is doing all of this while also guiding applicants individually through all of the documentation necessary and preparing them for their Admission Interview . “I want to understand their career goals, why they want to earn their MBA and effectively if this is the right program to most adequately fit with their unique profile, needs, and expectations,” Matteo says.

This Fall, Matteo is excited to be able to travel once more to multiple global destinations to meet prospective students at various school fairs, “the chance to interact in person is an opportunity that I encourage people not to miss as it adds an element of ‘ human relationship ' that is not possible over video conference calls.”

As part of emlyon business school's Confluence 2025 Plan , the institution set its sights to become *“one of the leading Global Business Universities in Europe ” seeking continued expansion on an international scale, which means seeking out international participants for its programs . “I personally will kick-off my fall tour in LATAM, but I have other colleagues that will be in places like Montreal, London, Paris, Istanbul, Beirut, Dubai, and in Africa and India to recruit for our campuses in those regions.”* (Keep reading for a list of Matteo's LATAM Fall-tour dates & registration.)

At this point, you may be asking yourself, “So why would someone choose to enroll in the International MBA at emlyon business school ?” Matteo is no stranger to this question and was happy to tell us what response he likes to share with candidates, “ emlyon is one of the top 20 business school in Europe and its real differentiating factor is the entrepreneurship DNA of the school. This combined with the flexibility of IMBA electives, opportunities to go abroad for exchanges and/or internships , hands-on projects throughout the year, and of course, the city of Lyon, make it stand-out against other MBA programs. The MBA is a life-changing year , and choosing to embark on this journey in Lyon, France, an extremely internationally city, (with almost 30,000 global students each year) access for easy travel around Europe, a lot of events and activities to do, and a rich history and reputation for the best gastronomy in the world, participants open-up the possibility for amazing things to happen both personally and professionally.”

emlyon is excited to have welcomed its most recent cohort this September, and Matteo and his fellow faculty members are looking forward to their upcoming salons and the opportunities to help enrich the lives of more young professionals through the International MBA program.

Sustainability Takes Global Executive MBA to London

Foster students meet experts at grantham research institute, blackrock, goldman sachs, impax asset management, mazars, and futerra.

“You can’t improve what you don’t measure. Having rigorous tracking systems to accurately measure a company’s environmental impact and sustainability progress is critical.” — That’s one of the key takeaways of Chingiz Torobekov, a Foster School of Business Global Executive MBA student, following an immersive learning experience in London.

Torobekov, along with Foster students and faculty, recently traveled to the U.K. for an intensive week of learning about sustainability and environmental, social, and governance (ESG).

The trip was a game-changer.

Global Executive MBA students spent a week meeting with international financial executives and sustainability experts, while also cementing lasting connections with each other. The students, who hail from 11 countries, explored the pressing need to advance more sustainable practices across business sectors.

Global Executive MBA students took a deep dive into sustainability and ESG during their weeklong London immersion

Global Executive MBA sustainability immersion

During the London immersion, students learned from experts at Imperial College London’s Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment. They also gained insights from leadership at BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, Impax Asset Management, Mazars, and Futerra about integrating sustainability into business strategy. From behind-the-scenes tours to Q&As, students gained insights to apply to their future leadership roles in business, government, and entrepreneurship.

Leading the trip was Kevin Wilhelm. An international expert in the intersection of climate change and the business world, Wilhelm teaches ESG at Foster and is the author of Return on Sustainability: How Business Can Address Climate Change in an Uncertain Economy .

“Seeing the learning, the connections, opportunities, and possibilities for each of these change-makers in the Global Executive MBA program to make a difference on this issue has been nothing short of amazing,” Wilhem said.

Global Executive MBA students go behind the scenes to learn about sustainability in London, England

Connecting international business and ESG

While learning about sustainability was at the core of the immersion experience, it was also a journey of discovery, revealing a dynamic world of ESG initiatives.

Students shared these takeaways from their weeklong study of the intersection of international business and ESG:

“[There are] significant hurdles when guiding companies toward sustainability initiatives. These challenges include navigating data collection complexities, addressing greenwashing concerns, ensuring data transparency, and measuring impacts/effects, especially in terms of Scope 3 emissions.” —Himanshi Goyal

“Given that the decisions made by present leaders will shape our future, the efforts of institutions like the Grantham Institute in educating and reshaping the mindsets of leaders concerning climate are crucial. The variety of leaders within government and organizations significantly influences the journey toward achieving Net Zero. Their perspectives on climate change and adherence—whether visionary, hesitant, or well-meaning—dictate the strides or setbacks experienced. Consequently, it becomes imperative to not only educate prospective leaders on climate issues and the consequences, but also to actively involve current policymakers and business heads in enhancing their understanding for making more informed choices.” —Sadie Josephs

“It became clear from the presentation by the Grantham Institute that implementing policies and regulations to incentivize businesses and individuals to adopt low-carbon technologies, and fostering innovation and collaboration to drive systemic change towards a more sustainable economy, is extremely critical.” —Ninad Khadse

During the London immersion, students learned from experts at Imperial College London's Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment.

Integrating sustainable policies into international business

Through on-site visits and seminars, the students witnessed how global leaders are approaching various climate risk-related issues. From integrating sustainability into core business strategies and transparent reporting of ESG performance to managing risks, engaging stakeholders, and driving innovation, they covered more ground than they could have imagined.

The weeklong immersion experience is a cornerstone of Foster’s Global Executive MBA, a one-year program designed for experienced professionals who want to elevate their expertise in global business strategy and innovation. Sustainability is built into multiple facets of the program, offering diverse perspectives for driving innovation and improvements within global business organizations.

Each year, the Global Executive MBA cohort travels internationally for a deep dive into the issues and challenges that are top-of-mind for global leaders. The trip offers students an unrivaled opportunity to learn from—and connect with—a roster of international experts and organizations.

Parent Review of CGEE

Parent Review: Study Abroad to Cuba, with West Chester University & Augsburg CGEE

The following was submitted by parents of a student participant who went on a custom faculty-led program to Cuba in March 2024.

What an amazing, life changing experience it was for our daughter who participated in CGEE’s 10 day Study Abroad trip to Cuba (March, 2024).

CGEE’s detailed powerpoint presentation and handouts included everything our daughter needed to be prepared prior to departure.  In addition to what to pack, lodging, transportation, detailed itinerary, it explained what to expect while navigating through customs in the US and in Cuba, and being placed in the care of the Liaison leaders from CGEE who would guide and support them throughout the entire trip. We felt very safe sending her with West Chester professors and the experienced leaders of CGEE.

And if the wealth of information we received in advance wasn’t reassuring enough, their well-thought out itinerary exposed the students to different regions and Cuban cultures, provided opportunities to meet and make connections to local communities and allowed for engaging activities that without a doubt would gain a deeper understanding of the world and the people in it, convinced us that this Cuba trip would be the best first study abroad experience for our daughter.

We were fortunate enough to be able to communicate with her throughout the week as she shared the many adventures she had and wonderful people she met.  This same sense of calm and comfort continued when we were notified at the end of the trip that our daughter passed out due to intense abdominal pain, rushed to the clinic for medical attention, and later in the day treated for food poisoning. Nichole at CGEE kept us informed, stayed at her side the entire time, and ensured our daughter was in the best care possible.  She translated any examinations/treatments and remained in contact with us every 2 hours.  Nichole treated her as if she were her own daughter.

We would absolutely recommend anyone going on an educational trip that is through CGEE.  It was overall a life changing experience for our daughter. We thank both CGEE and West Chester University for allowing this to happen.  She can’t wait for the next Study Abroad Adventure!

David Spalding to retire in 2025

By Rob Schweers, office of the senior vice president and provost May 09, 2024

David Spalding, Raisbeck Endowed Dean of the Ivy College of Business and vice president for economic development and industry relations (EDIR), will retire from Iowa State during the summer of 2025.

David Spalding head shot

David Spalding

Spalding, the longest serving Business dean in Iowa State history, began his service in 2013 after serving eight years at Dartmouth College, including as senior vice president and senior advisor to the president. He was reappointed as dean in 2018 and 2023. Spalding was appointed to lead EDIR in 2023 after serving as interim vice president since 2018.

"David has been an exceptional leader of both the Ivy College of Business and our economic development programs," said President Wendy Wintersteen. "His work has made a profound difference for our students, faculty and staff, helping them realize academic and entrepreneurial success while also generating economic growth across Iowa's 99 counties."

The searches for Spalding's successors will begin in the coming months.

Spalding's achievements as dean include growing undergraduate and graduate enrollment to record levels, establishing new academic programs to address Iowa workforce demand, completing a 45,000 square foot addition to the Gerdin Business Building, unprecedented success in fundraising including a $50 million gift to name the Ivy College of Business, raising the college's profile and record high rankings in "U.S. News & World Report."

During his tenure as vice president of EDIR, the university was recognized with numerous awards for its work in economic development, including the top award from the Innovation and Economic Prosperity universities in 2023. In 2021, the ISU Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship won the model program award from the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship and in 2022 received the NASDAQ Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence Award from the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers.

The Ivy College of Business has 4,820 students, 89 faculty and 88 staff among six academic departments and 14 undergraduate and nine graduate degree programs. One of only 2% of schools globally to be accredited in both business and accounting by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the college is known for its high-impact programs, including entrepreneurship, supply chain management and MBA programs, as well as its affordability compared to peers.

The office of economic development and industry relations helps external stakeholders harness Iowa State's unique capabilities and services, including the Center for Industrial Research and Service, Iowa Small Business Development Center, ISU Research Park, office of innovation commercialization and Pappajohn Center.

London has 227,000 millionaires: More than Paris, but less than New York, and the figure is dropping

people walking and buses running on Regents Street

The streets of London may not be paved with gold, but there’s still clearly plenty of it around.

One in 39 Londoners—or 227,000 people in a population of 8.8 million—have at least $1 million of liquid, investable wealth, according to the World’s Wealthiest Cities Report 2024 .

The research, compiled by Henley & Partners and New World Wealth, ranks the U.K. capital 5th globally for its high-net-worth population, behind New York (349,500 millionaires), San Francisco and the Bay Area (305,700), Tokyo (298,300) and Singapore (244,800).

Paris came in seventh in the world and second in Europe, with 165,000 liquid millionaires. Despite being home to the world’s richest person, Bernard Arnault, the French capital also trails London in total billionaires, with 23 to London’s 35.

It isn’t surprising to find high-net worth individuals (HNWIs) congregating in major global cities like these, where so much wealth is both created and managed.

However, the rankings reflect more than the economic activity of the cities in question. Policies have an impact too.

London and the U.K. more widely were historically highly successful in attracting foreign HNWIs, but according to Henley’s data the country has experienced net outflows of millionaires since the Brexit vote in 2016.

“Whatever one may think about the merits of Brexit, this cohort is voting with its feet. Coupled with the policy change to remove permanent non-domiciled taxpayer status, Brexit has made the UK less hospitable and welcoming to HNWIs,” former Lloyds Bank Commercial chief economist Trevor Williams commented last year.

A surge in millionaire net outflows also happened in 2022-3, with around 5,000 people estimated to have left—something likely to be connected to the U.K.’s abrupt ending of its tier 1 investor (or ‘golden’) visa after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

London and Paris were joined by 15 other European cities in the global top 50, with Dublin having the fastest growing millionaire population and Moscow the fastest falling.
