How to Apply for a United Kingdom Visa in Miami

How to Apply for a United Kingdom Visa in Miami

The Greater Miami Area is the seventh-largest metropolitan area in the United States and has a population of 6.2 million people.  The metropolitan area is composed of Miami-Dade County, Broward County, and Palm Beach County.  Its main cities include Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Hialeah, Miami Gardents, Coral Gables, Miramar, Davie, Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, and Boca Raton.  This is a diverse community where 40% of the population was born in another country, and it is one of America’s most important cities for international trade.  Miami is a business hub for the Latin American region and is often thought of as the unofficial “Capital of Latin America”.  While Spanish is often heard on the streets of Miami, you will also hear English spoken with a British accent since there are an estimated 400,000 UK citizens living in Florida.  Miami is the headquarters for several British companies such as Diageo, Bupa, Skyscanner, Virgin Voyages, and Lloyd’s of London.  The UK is the biggest foreign investor in Florida, and British individuals own hundreds of small businesses here, employing over 40,000 people across the state.  The UK is easily accessible from Miami through daily nonstop service to London Heathrow on American Airlines, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic.

The United Kingdom encompasses more than 240,000 square kilometers and 12,700 miles of coastline.  Four countries make up the UK: England, Scotland, and Wales (collectively, the island of Great Britain) plus Northern Ireland.  England, which accounts for more than half the land, is largely characterized by lowland terrain, with some mountainous areas to the north and the global financial center of London to the south.  Scotland, the most mountainous country in the UK, includes some 900 islands.  Wales is also primarily mountainous, while Northern Ireland has plenty of beautiful scenery along its northern coast.  All four countries feature rugged Atlantic coastlines, busy shipping ports, legendary historic sites, and pastoral countryside villages.  The capital city of London is the most visited destination for Miami tourists and business travelers.  The global financial hub is known for its prominent museums and art galleries; the changing of the guard at Buckingham Place; London Bridge and the Tower of London.  Edinburgh, Scotland, is the second most visited city, where towering castles and bustling nightlife echo its traditional Scottish heritage.  Manchester in northwestern England boasts a rich industrial heritage, while Liverpool is best known as the birthplace of the Beatles.

Away from its major cities, the United Kingdom draws hikers, bicyclists, and kayakers to its pastoral farmlands, quaint rustic villages, traditional gardens, national parks, and seaside resorts.  England’s highlights include the Neolithic megaliths of Stonehenge, the Roman baths of the city of Bath, London’s historic Canterbury Cathedral, and picturesque Lake District National Park.  Scotland’s rugged mountains are interspersed with dark highland lakes such as Loch Lomond and Loch Ness, home of the legendary monster.  Other famous attractions are Edinburgh Castle, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews, and the Culloden Battlefield and Visitors Centre, site of the last battle for Scotland’s independence from England.  Cardiff Castle is the best known of Wales’ many castles, while the picture-postcard beauty of the riverside villages of Beddgelert and Betws-y-Coed seem frozen in time.  Top destinations in Northern Ireland for Miami tourists include the Old Bushmills Distillery (to try Irish whiskey of course), The Dark Hedges, The Giant’s Causeway, The Titanic Belfast, and The Glens of Antrim.

Entering the United Kingdom

Since early 2020, the United Kingdom has severely limited international visitors to prevent further spread of the COVID-19 virus.  By early 2022, it had eased most travel restrictions for fully-vaccinated international travelers.  While many preventative measures remain in place, the rules could change again if new COVID variants arise.  The most current information is available from the British government at  https://www.gov.uk/guidance/travel-to-england-from-another-country-during-coronavirus-covid-19 .

The United Kingdom does not require incoming travelers to be quarantined (although masking regulations vary by country).  Fully-vaccinated travelers only need to fill out a passenger locator form 48 hours before leaving the United States.  However, the unvaccinated will need to take COVID-19 tests before departing for and after arriving in the United Kingdom.  Failing the UK test can lead to being quarantined.  Specific guidance is available at  https://www.gov.uk/guidance/travel-to-england-from-another-country-during-coronavirus-covid-19#if-you-are-not-fully-vaccinated .

Several visas are available for Miami residents wishing to enter the United Kingdom, including visitor, student, marriage, transit, and work visas ( https://www.gov.uk/apply-to-come-to-the-uk ).   Please know that Americans do not require a visa if they are visiting for tourism purposes or for unpaid business activities.   Citizens of the United States can visit the U.S. Department of State’s website that shows the entry and exit requirements for the United Kingdom: United Kingdom International Travel Information (state.gov)

If you hold a passport that does require a visa to enter the United Kingdom, you will most likely apply for the standard visa visitor, which is good for up to six months and costs £95 (about $127 based on current conversion rates).  Longer visitor visas are available, but they also carry additional requirements.  The earliest you can apply for a visitor visa is three months before your arrival date.  While the normal standard for turnaround is three weeks, the UK government said it had been averaging six weeks to process applications in early 2022.

Obtaining a Standard UK Visitor Visa from Miami

The steps to obtain a standard visitor visa to travel to the United Kingdom are outlined at  https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/usa-apply-for-a-uk-visa/apply-for-a-uk-visa-in-the-usa .  The process is as follows:

  • Fill out the online application at the link found at  https://www.gov.uk/standard-visitor/apply-standard-visitor-visa .
  • Pay the visa fee online of £95 (about $127).
  • Book a biometric appointment at an Application Support Centre (ASC).
  • Mail your completed application package to the proper authorities.

The primary requirement for obtaining a standard visitor visa is having a passport. The passport must be valid for at least the duration of your stay and contain at least one blank page.  During the online application process, you will need to provide such details as:

  • Passport number
  • Travel dates
  • Where you will be staying
  • Estimated cost of your trip
  • Current home address and how long you have lived there
  • Parents’ names and dates of birth (if known)
  • Annual income (if applicable)
  • Details of previous criminal, civil, or immigration offenses

You may also be asked for other information, such as your travel history over the past 10 years; employer contact information; and the names, addresses, and passport numbers of your partner and/or any family members in the UK.  If you are applying to stay in the UK for more than six months, you may also have to provide certification you have passed a tuberculosis test and pay a healthcare surcharge for access to the National Health Service (NHS).

Once you complete the first two steps, you will receive a confirmation letter from VFS Global, the privately-held visa issuance partner of the UK government.  You must take the letter and your passport with you to the ASC appointment (along with any other needed documentation).  The biometric information gathered by the ASC office consists of a photograph and your fingerprints.  ASC has offices in Miami and across all 50 states.  Locations can be found at https://egov.uscis.gov/office-locator/#/asc .  The ASC office will stamp your confirmation letter to confirm your visit.

You can also get biometric screening through VFS Global, which has offices in Miami and nine other U.S. cities.  Their offices can be found at https://visa.vfsglobal.com/usa/en/gbr/attend-centre .  However, you will need to purchase a premium package from VFS to obtain biometric screening at their offices.

Within five days of your ASC visit, you will need to assemble and mail your application package, which will include:

  • Your application form.
  • The ASC-stamped confirmation letter.
  • A UPS return shipping letter.
  • Any documents you were unable to upload in Step 1.

Mail the package to:

VFS Services USA Inc. UKVI Scanning Hub 145 West 45th St Floor 5 New York, NY 10036

If your application is accepted, you will receive a sticker (called a vignette) to add to your passport.  The vignette includes the type of visa issued, start and end dates, and any conditions attached to the visa.

Still, every visitor should know a few key bits of information before a trip to Miami. Follow our tips and in no time you’ll be sipping cocktails at the best bars in Miami , dancing at the best South Beach clubs and posting selfies with all the cool art you saw at Miami’s best museums . Essential Miami travel tips

Our little coffees pack a big punch

1.  Our little coffees pack a big punch

Down in Little Havana—and everywhere in Miami, really—you’ll find Cuban coffee. But proceed with caution. Despite its adorable size, the cafecito packs a serious caffeine punch. One (or even half of one if you’re not a coffee drinker) will do the trick.

We’re a late-night city

2.  We’re a late-night city

Planning on going clubbing? Be warned: if you show up at one of Miami’s major nightclubs at 11pm, it might just be you and the bartenders. Many Miami clubs don’t get going till well after midnight. And in the 24-hour district, at clubs such as Space, headlining DJs often won’t go on until 3am.

Sunscreen, baby

3.  Sunscreen, baby

Wear it! Love it! Never leave the house without it—especially if you happen to be from one of those climates with an actual winter. The Florida sun is no joke and getting scorched on your very first beach day is a good way to ruin the rest of your trip and look like a lobster in all your vacation pics.

On that note, hydrate

4.  On that note, hydrate

Drinking tons of water is not just your favorite celeb’s secret skincare hack. Combined with Miami’s intense heat and humidity, partying and even just a day full of Miami sightseeing is a recipe for dehydration. Avoid a dangerous situation by drinking plenty of H2O and other fluids gradually throughout the day.

Embrace Spanglish

5.  Embrace Spanglish

Occasionally, you’ll walk into a business or climb into an Uber where English is not an option. Relax. In Miami, people are used to using gestures and Spanglish to communicate when language won’t cut it. Don’t get flustered. We’re the Latin capital of America—embrace it.

It’s not all about the beach

6.  It’s not all about the beach

While South Beach remains the hottest tourist spot in Miami, there’s plenty to see over the bridge. If you came to Miami and didn’t see Wynwood, Brickell, Design District, Little Havana or Coconut Grove—you need to come back and fix that.

Art is everywhere

7.  Art is everywhere

And, it’s free if you know where to look. Walk or bike around Wynwood to check out some world-class murals and remember that admission to the Institute of Contemporary Art in Design District is always free. On the first full weekend of the month, Bank of American cardholders get in free to the Bass, Pérez Art Museum, HistoryMiami and others.

Public transit is lacking

8.  Public transit is lacking

Unlike so many of the world’s top cities, it’s not so easy to get around with a metro pass in Miami. The public transit system is small and disjointed, especially considering the sprawl of the city, so you’ll most likely want to rideshare or rent a car most places. Brickell’s Metromover is an adorable if silly mode of transportation that loops through Downtown with some pretty neat views if you’re in the area.

Book reservations when you can

9.  Book reservations when you can

Even in the slower summer months, it’s harder than ever to get into Miami’s most popular restaurants and clubs. Especially now that we’ve finally been included in the famed Michelin Guide , you’ll want to reserve in advance whenever you can. Of course, you don’t need reservations to score a delicious Cubano from a ventanita, and some spots, like Joe’s and Mandolin , will always be tough to book ahead.

Stay off major roads during rush hour

10.  Stay off major roads during rush hour

This is an obvious one for locals, but it’s easy to forget when you’re on vacation. Rush hour during the Miami work week (from around 4pm to 7pm on major highways, bridges and roads like Biscayne Boulevard and North Miami Avenue) is real, and it’s best to plan your commute around it.

The thing about Ocean Drive

11.  The thing about Ocean Drive

Ocean Drive is great for its sights, people watching and beaches—but it’s probably best to eat and drink elsewhere. The popular strip’s dining establishments (especially in the South Beach area) tend to be high on price and low on quality. Except for at Palace, where the rowdy weekend drag brunch is not to be missed.

Miami greetings are up close and personal

12.  Miami greetings are up close and personal

Many folks in the 305 will greet you with a kiss on the cheek—not a handshake. It’s a Latin thing and can sometimes catch a gringo with personal space issues off guard. Just follow the other person’s lead and you’ll be fine.

Check before you tip

13.  Check before you tip

It is not rare for places in Miami—especially on Miami Beach and even Wynwood—to include a 15 or 18 percent tip on your tab. Most ethical establishments will warn you as they hand you your check. But the shadier spots will leave it up to you to double-check that you’re not leaving a 40 percent tip.

Bike with caution

14.  Bike with caution

Miami is now pretty rife with Citi Bike stations and other rentable wheels. It can be a great way to cruise around on a nice day (check out Key Biscayne or Lummus Park for some prime riding) but take note: We are not the most bike-friendly city. Cars are pushy, infrastructure is lacking and accidents happen. Use the bike lanes (where they exist) and don’t place too much trust in motorists to make the right decision.

A word on parking

15.  A word on parking

Parking is expensive, especially in high-traffic areas like South Beach, Wynwood and Brickell. In Miami Beach, street parking is $4/hour, so we advise finding the nearest lot where parking will run you anywhere from $1/hour to a $20 flat fee for the day. In Brickell and Downtown, it works the other way around with metered parking costing less than a parking garage. Be warned: some private lots will boot your car if you exceed your limit.

Leave the Styrofoam at home

16.  Leave the Styrofoam at home

The material was officially banned from Miami-Dade public parks (including our beaches) in the summer of 2017. In Miami Beach, it’s technically illegal for restaurants to even use Styrofoam when serving customers. So remember when packing that picnic. If you get caught breaking the ban, you could get fined.

Drive with caution

17.  Drive with caution

We know how tempting it is to get behind the wheel of a convertible and cruise the streets of Miami. But while you’re joyriding, people next to you are most likely rushing to work or going about their regular lives in the city. Distracted drivers are bound to get honked at, cut off, flicked off, or worst, into accidents. Mind the road and especially keep an eye out for red-light cameras. They will get you.

Catch some live music

18.  Catch some live music

It’d be a shame if you came to Miami and didn’t catch some live music. The reliable choices are Ball & Chain for Latin and Las Rosas for grimy rock. Both proudly put on live music throughout the week and never charge a cover. For jazz, try Lagniappe in Midtown or the Corner in Downtown on Tuesday nights.

Beware of sidewalk hustlers

19.  Beware of sidewalk hustlers

Along South Beach, the sidewalks are lined with street promoters and hostesses, usually handing out flyers for bars and clubs, promising two-for-one cocktails or free cover. Keep walking. If a place in Miami needs to employ such tactics, it’s not worth visiting.

Shop local

20.  Shop local

It’s easy to wear down your credit card in any of the Lincoln Road or Design District shops. But if you’re looking to buy something with a little more personality (and fewer commas in the price tag) shop local. Check out the pop-up Magic City Flea if the timing works out or peruse the mom-and-pop shops down on Calle Ocho.

12 Things Every Traveler Should Know Before Visiting Miami

author image

See recent posts by Kevin Brouillard

Perched on Florida’s southern tip, Miami draws visitors from around the world with its blend of urban buzz and glamorous beach scene. However, visiting Miami is very different from visiting other popular Florida destinations. Why is that? Well, in terms of cultural diversity, vibrant nightlife, and overall bustle, Miami can feel light years away from hotspots like Orlando , St. Pete Beach , and the Florida Keys . To help first-time visitors make the most of their time by avoiding any faux pas (and hopefully saving some cash along the way), we’ve compiled a list of 12 key things every traveler should know before visiting Miami. Read on for tips on everything from the best time to go to Miami and its best beaches to where you should stay on your Miami vacation.

1. Miami is a late-night city that likes to party.

Downtown Miami at night

New York isn’t the only U.S. city that never sleeps. Whether you’re just dining out or gearing up for Miami’s legendary club scene, you’ll want to consider pushing your plans back later than usual — or risk being the first to arrive. Leading clubs, such as Space and E11even are open around the clock, while another top choice, LIV, doesn’t open its doors until nearly midnight. You’ll also want to keep in mind that headlining DJs usually don’t take the decks until as late in the night — we’re talking between 2 and 3 AM in most instances. If you’re looking for something on the earlier side, head to Lagniappe, an open-air bar that puts on live music for a more traditionally primetime crowd. You’ll also want to make note of the many seasonal parties that take up residence along Miami Beach, which can mean 24/7 beats for days at a time. These include March’s Ultra Music Festival, May’s Rolling Loud, and the week-long Miami Beach Pride that starts in late-March. This is to say nothing of the individual hotel parties that take place up and down the beach, as well as the events associated with major events like Art Basel and the Miami Food Festival.

2. Pack more than beachwear for your Miami vacation.

Acqualina Resort & Spa on the Beach

Acqualina Resort & Spa on the Beach/Oyster

This isn’t the Florida Keys or Daytona Beach , so don’t plan on sporting flip-flops and swimsuits anywhere other than the beach or hotel pool when you’re in Miami. To be fair, even the pools can feel like fashion runways at some of the city’s posh hotels. Many restaurants and bars enforce dress codes in Miami — including Miami Beach and South Beach — while clubs can be as selective, barring entry to sandal-wearing clientele. Miami is one of the United States’ most cosmopolitan cities, so dress to impress, or at least try not stand out for the wrong reasons. If you’re after a more casual vibe, the beach towns up the coast makes a great alternative, or stick to the restaurants and bars tucked away on Miami’s side streets rather than the dining scene along Collins Ave., Lincoln Road, and Ocean Drive.

3. The effects of climate change are already flooding Miami — and it’s not going to get better.

Beach at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne

Beach at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne/Oyster

Oh, Miami — so blessed and so cursed at the same time. While the city sits firmly in the hurricane zone and has been victim to several major storms in the past, the largest current threat is fair-weather flooding due to climate change. These floods are most often associated with king tides, which are excessively high tides caused by lunar and solar cycles. While these have been a normal occurrence since the beginning of time, rising sea levels fueled by climate change have cause these tides to become even more destructive in Miami. This is exacerbated by the porous stone that underlies much of the South Florida region, allowing water to rise from directly underneath this major urban area. King-tide flooding can happen regardless of weather — though it’s worse during high tides and weather events that cause the sea near shorelines to swell. In other words: It can be perfectly sunny outside, but several streets will be filled with water and impassable. September through November — which coincide with the end of hurricane season and the king-tide cycles — are the worst time of year for this troubling phenomenon.

4. Miami is home to huge Caribbean and Latin American communities.

Domino Plaza

Cuban culture is incredibly prominent in Miami, and enjoying a fresh mojito while watching a live salsa performance are highly recommended experiences. The strong Cuban presence stems from the fact that more than 25% of Miami-Dade County residents are Cuban-born plus the many descendants of Cuban immigrants that have arrived over the past six decades. However, this still constitutes less than half of the city’s foreign-born population. Miami is also home to significant Haitian, Bahamian, Venezuelan, and Colombian communities — to name just a few. Between restaurants, art galleries, and music venues, there are plenty of ways to dive deeper into these other cultures. For starters, head to Little Haiti for free concerts and art at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex. Be sure to stop for spicy seafood at laidback Chef Creole.

5. The art scene is booming in Miami.

Wynwood, Miami, United States

Miami may not have the largest collection of museums, but art permeates the city in numerous ways, from public art and cultural centers to galleries and major art fairs. The Wynwood neighborhood, located just north of Downtown Miami, is teeming with street art and murals. The movement began in 2009 with the open-air Wynwood Walls, which encompasses 18 walls of work created by international graffiti artists. Since then, street art has expanded throughout the neighborhood, with notable displays at Wynwood Brewing Company and along NW 2 nd Avenue. Other street art hotspots include Calle Ocho in Little Havana and throughout Little Haiti. Since 2002, Art Basel has drawn renowned artists, collectors, and enthusiasts to Miami each December for a week’s worth of exhibitions. If you can’t make the event, fret not, as many of the participating galleries showcase outstanding works of art year-round. The sizable Rubell Family Collection exhibits a wealth of avant-garde works by art legends like Keith Haring and Andy Warhol. Free exhibits can be found at Locust Projects and Spinello Projects, while Yeleen Gallery in Little Haiti features works that highlight the neighborhood’s Caribbean roots.

6. Miami Beach isn’t the city’s only beach (and isn’t all there is to Miami).

Miami Beach — the famed stretch of sand that’s lined by stunning art deco buildings — is a must for a proper Miami visit. In fact, many people consider Miami Beach and South Beach to be Miami itself. That’s problematic for a ton of reasons. However, one of the biggest sins among them is limiting yourself when it comes to beaches. Many first-time visitors make the mistake of not venturing farther afield to take full advantage of the extensive network of beaches found in the Miami region. Below South Beach, Virginia Key boasts sandy shorelines without the crowds. Admission to Virginia Key Beach Park costs $8 per vehicle on the weekend, but the extra space and kayaking through wetlands are worth the added cost. Heading farther out on the causeway, Crandon Park is a family-friendly beach on Key Biscayne with water-sports and cabana rentals. Just above Miami Beach, Haulover Beach is divided between nude sunbathing in the north and a dog-friendly portion in the south.

7. Public transportation in Miami requires some know-how (and patience).

Aerial Photography at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel

Miami’s public transportation system is the largest in Florida, and includes buses, trolleys, Metromover, and Metrorail. Both the Miami Trolley and Metromover are free to use and aid in visiting the mainland portions of Miami, such as Little Havana, Wynwood, and Brickell City Centre. That being said, both are limited in geographical scope and — notably — don’t connect to Miami Beach or South Beach. The Metrorail connects with the Metromover at several stations, but requires a $2.25 fare. It’s an affordable option for traveling to the airport and the outlying neighborhood of Coconut Grove , but little else. It also doesn’t connect with Miami Beach. The Metrobus is the most extensive public transit network in the city, but is impeded by the congested traffic that is pervasive throughout Miami’s streets. For traveling shorter distances, try Freebee – a free electric car service that can be accessed via the Freebee mobile app. While the service is free thanks to funding from car door advertisements, be sure to tip your driver a few bucks. If you’re staying in Miami Beach and South Beach only, consider renting a bike, using your own two feet, or bank on relying on taxis. Bringing your own car? Get ready for epic parking headaches (more on that below).

8. Parking in Miami is pricey, challenging to find, and strictly enforced.

Ocean Drive in Miami

As mentioned previously, Miami is somewhat notorious for its traffic. However, even unperturbed and seasoned city drivers should be aware of some Miami parking peculiarities before getting behind the wheel. In Miami Beach, street parking is the costliest option, running as high as $4 per hour in South Beach. Off-street lots cost comparatively less at $2 per hour, while parking garages are the best option for lengthier stays with day rates as low as $20. On the flipside, parking costs in downtown Miami neighborhoods operate in the reverse order. Hourly rates in parking garages run as high as $7 per hour, while a full-day can cost nearly $30. Furthermore, avoid parking in Miami Beach’s residential zones without a valid permit during restricted hours, which include the entire weekend as well as weekday evenings. These rules are strictly enforced and the authorities will not hesitate to tow your car away.

9. When is high season in Miami? Book ahead if visiting from December through April.

While Miami bustles throughout the year, the high season for tourism runs from December through mid-April, with notable peaks around the Art Basel festival in early December, between Christmas and New Year’s Day, and during spring break. While prices do rise with demand, you can reduce the added expense by booking flights and hotels several months in advance if you want your visit to coincide with the city’s best weather.

10. The gay scene is out and proud in Miami.

The Infinity Pool at The Standard Miami

The Infinity Pool at The Standard Miami/Oyster

When it comes to gay life in Florida, Miami and Ft. Lauderdale (up the coast) take the cake. Miami serves as a major party destination for LGBTQ travelers, and has a handful of legendary gay clubs. Twist and Palace are the most famous of these venues, and each draw world-famous DJs and host excellent drag shows. You’ll find plenty of smaller venues throughout town as well, some of which cater to a mixed gay-straight crowd. Hotels in Miami are almost all universally welcoming of LGBTQ travelers, and you’ll see couples of all stripes holding hands in public. The city hosts several major gay events throughout the year as well, including the White Party and Miami Pride events.

11. Miami is expensive (but there are ways to save).

Broken Shaker in Miami

Broken Shaker in Miami/Oyster

There’s no way around it: Miami is one of the priciest cities to visit in the United States. Given its legendary status as a mecca for parties, beaches, luxury services, amazing restaurants, art, and nightlife, the city has enough pull to make it a hotspot year round. While we’ve already told you that the winter months and early spring are high season — and thus mean paying a premium on everything from flights to hotels — there are ways to save. You’ll find slightly cheaper hotel rates if you’re willing to stay on the back side of Miami Beach, toward Biscayne Bay. From there, it’s only a 15-minute walk to the beach, and you’ll enjoy a quieter vibe. You’ll also find meals for slightly less if you dine away from hotspots like Lincoln Road, Ocean Drive, and Collins Ave. Food and drink on the mainland are generally less expensive as well, and you’ll likely get more for your money when it comes to hotels, too. However, you’ll be paying to commute to the beach and nightlife of South Beach. If you’re willing to visit when the weather is humid and hot, May can be a decent time of year as well, with rates that are lower than the winter and early spring months.

12. It can be fun to brush up on your Spanish in Miami.

Versalles in Little Havana

Versalles in Little Havana/Oyster

Miami’s mix of Latin American and Caribbean cultures means that Spanish is the first or second language for the majority of its residents. In fact, only about a quarter of Miami-Dade County speak only English. That being said, you aren’t expected to be a Spanish master here. However, it can be fun to practice your Spanish while you’re in town. If you’re addressed in Spanish, certainly make a go at having a basic conversation. For Spanish newbies, using simple greetings like “cómo estás” (how are you) when appropriate will earn you some credibility. Even more skilled Spanish speakers may still find the more prevalent Cuban accent hard to decipher, so be patient and don’t hesitate to employ Spanglish in this multicultural city when necessary. It’s also worth building up your knowledge of food-related lingo to help navigate menus at hole-in-the-wall establishments and restaurants alike. That’s particularly true at the old-school Cuban diners found throughout the city. To put your language skills to the test, try ordering a cafécito (Cuban espresso) in the Little Havana neighborhood.

Hotel Picks in Miami for Every Traveler

Miami luxury hotel pick: 1 hotel south beach.

The Main Pool at the 1 Hotel South Beach

Pricing for 1 Hotel South Beach

It’s no secret: We love the 1 Hotels brand. There’s just something about how effortlessly they combine sustainability, luxury services and amenities, and boho style that makes them appealing no matter where you are in the world. Of course, their South Beach outpost has the added bonus of overlooking Miami’s beautiful beach, and features one of the nicest pools in all of South Beach. It’s also just a bit removed from the insanity of central South Beach and Collins Avenue, which makes it extra appealing for an exclusive luxury getaway.

Miami Family Hotel Pick: Loews Miami Beach Hotel

Pricing for Loews Miami Beach Hotel

One of the most popular hotels in South Florida, the Loews Miami Beach Hotel sits smack in the middle of the South Beach scene, making it easy to get practically anywhere in town. This iconic property is popular with groups of friends and couples — there’s an adults-only pool for them — but also happens to be one of the best options for families with kids in Miami. There’s a dedicated area for children on the beach, as well as an extensive kids’ club that organizes tons of different programs for kids aged 4 to 12.

Miami Romantic Hotel Pick: COMO Metropolitan Miami Beach

Aerial Photography at the COMO Metropolitan Miami Beach

Pricing for COMO Metropolitan Miami Beach

Situated at the more peaceful northern edge of South Beach, the COMO Metropolitan combines this brand’s wellness ethos with just the right dash of Miami style. Rooms and suites are gorgeous, and many have stunning ocean and beach views. The spa is one of the best in the region, offering a variety of treatments, and on-site dining scores raves from previous guests. It’s a chic, romantic retreat and its 74-room size means that it feels more intimate than some of the mega-hotels that line Miami’s shores.

Travel time from Miami to London

How long does it really take to fly from Miami to London? Here's a sample itinerary for a commercial flight plan. If you want to know the total travel time to reach London, you need to include time at the airports. Eventually, you'll be able to customize this itinerary to select other nearby airports and choose your preferred airline.

Tuesday, 7:17 pm :  start in Miami drive for about 18 minutes most airlines recommend you get to the airport at least 90 minutes before your flight, so arrive by 8:30 pm at the latest

8:05 pm :  get your boarding pass and go through TSA security allow enough time for long security lines during busy travel seasons or holidays, and prepare for the wait time

9:05 pm :  arrive at the gate once you're ready to board, you can get something to eat in the airport or just relax near the gate

9:35 pm :  prepare for boarding check your boarding pass for your group number or listen to the gate agent as they announce boarding, some airlines require you to be in the boarding area 10-15 minutes before departure or risk losing your seat

9:50 pm :  board Virgin Atlantic Airways flight you can scroll down to view other airlines that fly this route

10:00 pm :  this is your scheduled departure time but remember flights can be delayed, so take that into account it takes the plane an average of 15 minutes to taxi to the runway

10:15 pm :  wheels up! take-off from MIA fly for about 9.5 hours in the air

Wednesday, 12:37 pm (local time) :   London Gatwick (LGW) London is 5 hours ahead of Miami so the time in Miami is actually 7:37 am you actually arrive the day after you left taxi on the runway for an average of 15 minutes to the gate

12:52 pm (local time) :  arrive at the gate at LGW deboard the plane, and claim any baggage if you're renting a car, check if you need to take a shuttle to car rental agency, otherwise you can ride in a cab, limo, or Uber for about 1 hour to your destination

2:05 pm (local time) :  arrive in London

Total travel time: 14 hours

How far is London from Miami? Here's the quick answer if you have a private jet and you can fly in the fastest possible straight line.

Flight distance: 4,436 miles or 7139 km

Flight time: 9 hours, 22 minutes

Compare this to a whole day of commercial travel with the airports and waiting in line for security, which ends up taking a total of 13 hours, 48 minutes .

Flying private is roughly 1.5x faster , and saves you about 5 hours in your total travel time.

Because of the curvature of the Earth, the shortest distance is actually the "great circle" distance, or "as the crow flies" which is calculated using an iterative Vincenty formula. For a long distance, this appears as a curve on the map, and this is often the route that commercial airlines will take so it's a good estimate of the frequent flyer miles you'll accumulate as well.

This is a fairly long flight, so unless you have a Gulfstream G650 or your own Boeing or Airbus, you might be booking a commercial flight. In that case, your travel time would really need to include how many minutes to get to your local airport, wait for security, board and taxi on the runway, land at the other airport, and get to your destination. The flight itinerary at the top of the page takes into account all these factors to get a more accurate estimate of your actual flight time .

  • London City Airport
  • London Heathrow Airport
  • London Gatwick Airport
  • London Luton Airport
  • London Stansted Airport
  • London Southend Airport

The most common route is MIA to LGW, so that's what we used in the sample itinerary. However, you may want to explore travel alternatives, you could try one of these routes:

  • MIA to LHR Miami International to London Heathrow
  • MIA to STN Miami International to London Stansted
  • MIA to LTN Miami International to London Luton
  • OPF to LTN Opa-locka Executive to London Luton
  • MIA to BQH Miami International to Biggin Hill
  • MIA to LGW Miami International to London Gatwick

We picked Virgin Atlantic Airways for your main flight, but there are other airlines that you should check if you're looking for the cheapest flight, or you need a different schedule. Check the websites of these airlines:

  • Virgin Atlantic Airways (VS)

MIAMI is intoxicatingly beautiful, with palm trees swaying in the breeze and South Beach’s famous Art Deco buildings glowing in the warm sunlight. Even so, it’s the people – not the climate, the landscape or the cash – that make it so noteworthy. Two-thirds of the two-million-plus population are Hispanic, the majority of them Cuban, and Spanish is spoken here almost as often as English.

What to do in Miami

Accommodation in miami, coral gables, cubans in miami, eating in miami, little havana, miami beach’s beaches, miami nightlife and entertainment, pérez art museum miami (pamm), south beach, wynwood and the design district.

Miami has a range of districts that mirror its variegated cultural, economic and social divisions. Separated from the mainland by Biscayne Bay – and actually, a separate city – the most popular is Miami Beach, which is defined largely by the bacchanalian pursuits along South Beach. In addition to an enticing stretch of sand, this is home to much of the city’s Art Deco architecture.

Back on the mainland, the towers of downtown herald Miami’s proud status as the headquarters of many US corporations’ Latin American operations. To the north, the art galleries and showrooms of Wynwood and the Design District are gradually starting to attract more visitors. Meanwhile, southwest of downtown, there’s nowhere better for a Cuban lunch than Little Havana, which spreads out along 8th Street (also known as Calle Ocho). Immediately south, the spacious boulevards and ornate public buildings of Coral Gables are as impressive now as they were in the 1920s, when the district set new standards in town planning. Lastly, sun-worshippers should make time for Key Biscayne, a smart, secluded island community with some beautiful beaches, an easy five miles off the mainland. The Key had a “coloured-only” beach in the pre-civil rights era, and it is still significant in terms of local African American history.

  • Marvel at the Art Deco

The pastel-shaded Art Deco architecture of South Beach provides a gorgeous setting for Miami's most glamorous hotels and bars. For a fun way to take it all in, book onto a Segway Tour .

  • Glide along in the Everglades

Florida has numerous creeks and swamps to exploring by boat . The most beautiful of these are in the Everglades.

  • Have your adrenaline pumped in Biscayne Bay

Go sailing around the celebrity mansions of Biscayne Bay, or soak up the stellar views from a kayak. Better still, get your heart pumping with a parasailing or flyboarding adventure.

  • Go on an Art Walk

Miami is one of the most dynamic art centres in the world, best experienced on a walking tour through the graffiti-wrapped galleries of Wynwood.

  • Eat your way through Little Havana

A true slice of Latin America, this lively neighbourhood is the place to come for gut-busting Cuban far and heady café con leche. To really immerse yourself in the area's culinary delights, book onto a walking and food tour .

  • Take the kids to Jungle Island

A wildlife park that features a flamingo lake, serpentarium, parrot area and even a tiger compound, all hidden within a lushly landscaped jungle habitat.

  • Visit the Pérez Art Museum

Spectacularly sited, this world-class art museum is the jewel in downtown's crown and a symbol of the city's resurgence.

  • Sip afternoon tea at the Biltmore Hotel, Coral Gables

As Coral Gables' premier attraction, this hotel is both grand and intimate – sit for an afternoon tea, play a round of golf or just take in the atmosphere.

Accommodation is rarely a problem in miami – though you should expect rates to go up on weekends, holidays, festival weeks and in the main winter tourist season (Dec–April). Though it can be great fun to stay in one of the numerous art deco south Beach hotels, note that they were built in a different era, and, as such, rooms can be tiny.

All of Miami’s constituent neighbourhoods are fast to assert their individuality, though none does it more definitively than CORAL GABLES, southwest of Little Havana. Twelve square miles of broad boulevards, leafy side streets and Spanish and Italian architecture form a cultured setting for a cultured community.

Coral Gables’s creator was a northern transplant born in Pennsylvania, George Merrick, who raided street names from a Spanish dictionary to plan the plazas, fountains and carefully aged stucco-fronted buildings here. Unfortunately, Coral Gables was taking shape just as the Florida property boom ended. Merrick was wiped out, and died in 1942 as Miami’s postmaster. But Coral Gables never lost its good looks, and it remains an impressive place to explore. Merrick wanted people to know they’d arrived somewhere special, and as such, eight grand entrances were planned on the main approach roads (though only four were completed). Three of these stand along the western end of Calle Ocho as you arrive from Little Havana.

The best way into Coral Gables is along SW 22nd Street, known as the Miracle Mile. Note the arcades and balconies here, and the spirals and peaks of the Omni Colonnade Hotel, at 180 Aragon Ave one block north, which were completed in 1926 to accommodate George Merrick’s office.

During the mid-1950s, when opposition to Cuba’s Batista dictatorship began to assert itself, a trickle of Cubans started arriving in a predominantly Jewish section of Miami then called Riverside. The trickle became a flood when Fidel Castro took power in 1959, and the area became Little Havana, populated by the affluent Cuban middle classes who had the most to lose under communism.

These original immigrants were joined by a second influx in May 1980, when the Mariel boatlift brought 125,000 islanders from the port of Mariel to Miami in just a few days. These new arrivals were poor and uneducated, and a fifth of them were fresh from Cuban jails – incarcerated for criminal rather than political crimes. Bluntly, Castro had dumped his misfits on Miami. The city reeled, and then recovered from this mass arrival, but it left Miami’s Cuban community utterly divided. Even today, older Cuban-Americans claim that they can pick out a Marielito from the way he or she walks.

That said, local division gives way to fervent agreement when it comes to Castro: he’s universally detested. Despite failing to depose the dictator, Cuban-Americans have been far more successful at influencing the US government. Since the 1980s, Cubans have been vociferous supporters of the Republican Party, and therefore one of the main reasons that the US embargo of Cuba (imposed in 1962) remains in place, for now at least.

Miami does Cuban food best, and it’s not limited to the traditional haunts in Little Havana. The hearty comfort food – notably rice and beans, fried plantains and shredded pork sandwiches – can be found in every neighbourhood, and you’ll also want to try Cuban coffee: choose between café Cubano, strong, sweet and frothy, drunk like a shot with a glass of water, or café cortadito, a smaller version of a café con leche (with steamed milk). Cuban cooking is complemented by sushi bars and American home-style diners, as well as Haitian, Italian and new Floridian (a mix of Caribbean spiciness and fruity Florida sauces) restaurants, among a handful of other ethnic cuisines. Coral Gables, South Beach and the Design District are best for upmarket cafés and restaurants. Seafood is abundant: succulent grouper, yellowfin tuna and wahoo, a local delicacy, are among five hundred species of fish that thrive offshore. Stonecrab claws (served Oct–May), are another South Florida speciality.

Introduced in Miami in 2002 as an offshoot of the eponymous Geneva festival, Art Basel has quickly become one of the city’s biggest events. More than 50,000 gallery-owners, dealers, aficionados and art snobs – plus a startling number of fashionistas and celebs – descend over four days in the first week in December, keen to snap up a canvas or sculpture by an unknown, presumably in the hope it will be worth millions in a few years. Local and international galleries show paintings, photographs and varied media pieces from established art stars and emerging artists at the Miami Beach Convention Center, but discussions, film screenings, public showings and performance-art events are held all over South Beach and downtown: in hole-in-the-wall showrooms, local beaches and parks, and even, one year, on a minuscule island in the bay. For information, visit artbasel.com/Miami-Beach .

The initial home of Miami Cubans was a few miles west of downtown in what became LITTLE HAVANA, whose streets, parks, memorials, shops and food reflect the Cuban experience in all its diversity. Note, though, that streets are much quieter than those of South Beach (except during the Little Havana Festival in early March), and today, many successful Cuban-Americans have moved elsewhere in the city, to be replaced by immigrants from parts of Central America, especially Nicaragua.

Make a beeline here for lunch at one of the many small restaurants on SW 8th Street, or Calle Ocho, the neighbourhood’s main drag. Check out also Cuban Memorial Boulevard, the stretch of SW 13th Avenue just south of Calle Ocho, where a cluster of memorials underscores the Cuban-American presence in Miami. Here, the simple stone Brigade 2506 Memorial remembers those who died at the Bay of Pigs on April 17, 1961, during the abortive invasion of Cuba by US-trained Cuban exiles.

With twelve miles of calm waters, clean sands, swaying palms and candy-coloured lifeguard towers, you can’t go wrong with Miami’s cornucopia of beaches. The young and beautiful frequent those between 5th and 21st streets, a convenient hop from the juice bars and cafés on Ocean Drive. From 6th to 14th streets, Lummus Park – containing sand shipped in from the Bahamas – is the heart of the scene; there’s an unofficial gay section roughly around 12th Street. North of 21st, things are more family-oriented, with a boardwalk running between the shore and the hotels up to 46th. To the south, First Street Beach and South Pointe are favoured by Cuban families, and are quite busy on weekends. For good swimming, head up to 85th, a quiet stretch that’s usually patrolled by lifeguards.

Miami’s nightlife is unsurpassed in Florida, and is among the best in the country. At the clubs, house and techno beats are the most popular, followed by salsa or merengue songs spun by Spanish-speaking DJs. Most of the action is centred in South Beach, with cover charges averaging around $20. Door policies are notoriously fierce at current in-spots; the places listed below include laidback local haunts as well as some of the hotter bars and clubs. The free new Times magazine (published Thurs), offers listings of what’s going on where and when – including gay and lesbian info.

With a $35 million infusion of cash and valued artwork from real estate developer Jorge Pérez, the Miami Art Museum controversially rebranded itself and opened as the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) in late 2013. And with a new name, a renovated face – the institution moved to the (also rechristened) Museum Park (formerly Bicentennial Park) into a stunning building overlooking Biscayne Bay. The collection contains a substantial haul of post-1940 artworks (strong on Latin American artists), and showcases outstanding international travelling exhibits (the first focused on the work of Ai Weiwei).

Occupying the southernmost three miles of Miami Beach is gorgeous South Beach, with its hundreds of dazzling pastel-coloured 1920s and 1930s Art Deco buildings. By day, the sun blares down on sizzling bodies on the sand, but it’s worth braving an early-morning wake-up call to catch the dawn glow, which bathes the Deco hotels in pure, crystalline white light. By night, ten blocks of Ocean Drive become one of the liveliest stretches in Miami, as terrace cafés spill across the specially widened sidewalk and crowds of tourists and locals saunter by the beach.

Loosely bordered north–south by 20th and 5th streets, and west–east by Lenox Avenue and the ocean, the area referred to as the Deco District actually incorporates a variety of styles: take one of the informative walking tours offered by the Miami Design Preservation League to learn the difference between Streamline, Moderne and Florida Deco, not to mention Mediterranean Revival.

If the tourist hordes get too much, head a block west of the beach to Collins Avenue, lined with more Deco hotels and fashion chains, or to Washington Avenue, which tends more toward funky thrift stores and cool coffee bars. For an extension of that aesthetic, head for the Lincoln Road Mall (between Alton Rd and Washington Ave), a sparkling pedestrianized zone of shops and cafés where the beautiful people stroll and graze.

North of downtown and NW 20th Street, the Wynwood Art District is home to one of the largest and most dynamic concentrations of art galleries in the nation. Though it’s relatively safe to explore, galleries are spread out and the area is dodgy at night, so this is one part of Miami best experienced by car. Highlights include the Rubell Collection, 95 NW 29th St (rfc.museum), a massive modern art collection housed in a warehouse that formerly held drugs confiscated by the federal authorities. Further north, the Design District (miamidesigndistrict.net), hemmed in by 36th and 41st streets between Miami Avenue and Biscayne Boulevard, is also worth a wander, crammed with hip restaurants and designer furniture stores. One standout studio here is Locust Projects, 155 NE 38th St #100 (locustprojects.org), a warehouse crammed with tantalizing multimedia installations.

Top 5 airlines serving from London to Miami

Cabin crew on our flight showed lack of any customer service gruff and acting annoyed if you asked anything and I mean anything Example a man on the seat over dropped his beer on my husbands blanket We asked if we could switch out blankets cabin crew Said. No we don’t have any extras OK well can you take the wet one Cabin crew looked disgusted and annoyed Took it no OK or yes just a growl

Quick flight. But cabin crew were very noisy and talking too much, especially when we were seated at the back of the plane trying to sleep through the night .

My ticket was for Premium Economy and all the seats were taken, I was placed in Economy class and I’m looking for a refund.

Unfortunately delayed 2 hrs due to faulty tyre.. which had to be changed, but better safe than sorry.

The delay was an issue. Other than that. Every thing good

Hi vergin Atlantic service was good but the flight ticket agent travel up charge me extra 57 pounds as a airport charges, actually I refuse to pay but they say if I not pay £57 then they say you will not be able to travel from Heathrow to goa ,so for me there was no option and it was just 3 day before my departure so i paid, so please look in to the matter. And I have a receipt of £ 57 as well .thanks

Staff didn’t check cabin well for landing seemed more interested in chatting to each other. Food was poor and differed from pre order.

We were in the last group to be called to the flight - which was 30 minutes late taking off. While we were lucky enough to have been given bulkhead seats (due to a medical condition I’d told them about beforehand) the seats weren’t particularly comfortable. A crying baby for the whole trip made things worse, so the crew managed very well with coping. The final thing I’d say was that there wasn’t enough food served during the flight.

Very good. Glad we had Premium for the flight out.

We flew Upper Class from London to The Turks and Caicos. Check in was amazing. Our ldriver too us directly to a special entrance to terminal 3. It took 10 minutes to check in and clear customs. Amazing! The VA lounge is large and comfortable. Boarding the flight was easy and without a wait. The crew was excellent. But the seats were awful, strange and uncomfortable. Having a comfortable flat bed seat is the reason we pays 1000s extra. The VA 787 uses a reverse herringbone configuration. Look it up. You have your back to the window and are facing the aisle with no privacy. Turning the seat into a bed requires assistance from the crew so not very spontaneous. . The food was ok. A bit tasteless and meager portions. Had to pay for WiFi. I believe VA has other configuration on their dream airbus flights. Lots of stuff about all this on YouTube where you can see what I have been describing. I can not recommend taking VA on a long flight with these seats.

Everything was fine once we actually got on our flight. It was more then annoying they canceled (delayed) our flight. We lost out on a day of our trip along with money on our stay. Plus we had to book another hotel. So expensive.

This flight was canceled and delayed several times without explanation. The plane was freezing cold and no wifi for messaging. Getting off the plane was terribly unorganized and felt like it took forever….

We were redirected to a near by city due to weather and had to stay in the aircraft before flying to the original destination's airport. The whole delay added 3+ hours and were were not offered any snacks or water.

Use planes with TVs on flights over 4 hours. The free entertainment was a cheap in between solution for a very long flight that you don't even bother providing meals or decent snacks.

They ocer booked the connecting flight. My bags took a long time to come out, nevertheless I got to the gate in time to board, but they have given my seat to another passenger. They were aware I was connecting from another flight that was a little late, but they did not care. The customer representatives were rude. A horrible experience.

A disaster, I lost my connection due to overcrowding at the Miami airport, having a 3-hour layover and the airline did nothing to reboard me on time and I had to sleep on the floor for 18 hours.

The flight was 90 minutes long and the stewardesses were extremely slow. I was in row 16 and they did not serve us drinks until we were descending for landing in a 90 minute flight. Unacceptably slow and at least 10 rows (20 to 31) did not receive any drinks or snacks for the entire duration of the flight because of the slowness of the stewardesses. There is no rationale to delay beverage service to brew coffee for a flight at six p m.

Flight was delayed three hours waiting for the flight crew, even though the plane was at the gate for the scheduled departure

It was a good flight. Of course it was full, but it went well.

Seats in coach aren't padded enough for a 6 hour flight

As an advantage member I found the experience very positive

The flight from Amsterdam to Dallas was great, ok food, good service, great entertainment. But Dallas to SF was very tiring because of two hour delay inside the airplane waiting for AA paper work in 99 degrees in the sun. We had no oxygen and the pilot had to ask everyone to blast the AC because it was getting too hot inside the cabin.

American Airlines switched aircrafts for some reason and the new plane had to be checked, It took an hour for this while we were on the plane parked. But then we waited one more hour for an officer to come and fill out paperwork so that he could ok the plane or fly it himself, something of that nature. It was 99 degrees in Dallas and we were cooking inside the plane. The pilot had to ask everyone to shut the window shutters and open the air full blow because it was too hot inside the cabin and smelled like gasoline. Worse was that when I bought the ticket, the third party seller called to insist in buying insurance for this flight. I told them no because I was not going to save any money after all, so I made it to SF somehow by a miracle. Why buy insurance when the airlines are responsible for any delay, cancelation, or problem. Please advice third party sellers like Underpricer to not call and try to sell insurance at $100 per passenger.

Our luggage did not make it with us despite the fact that there was an hour between landing in Madrid (from Granada) and the departure of the plane to Washington DC. We received notifications about this, which is a nice touch, but they were in Spanish and it took us a while to figure out what the message was. Furthermore, the process of filing a report was not intuitive and we have received no e-mail or other form of confirmation that the airline has received our missing luggage reports. Needs improvement!

Some crew were very helpful. Could be better food choices. Should be more leg room even in economy.

As a disabled passenger the arrangements for getting me to the plane and onto the plane were excellent as was the reception and arrangements at Chicago.

Flight home was great. But, as should have been expected, Newark Liberty airport sucked.

Food was low quality as well as quantity; I ordered vegetarian. We waited 35 MINUTES for the first bag to arrive after landing.

Ability to select seating would be nice. We were family of three and they had us seated back to back and one of us on the other side of the plane??? That is pretty goofy. Especially when tickets were placed two months in advance.

It was not Iberia. It was with United. It was great!!!

I loved the ability to upgrade my seat which was worth it. The large seat and ability to recline made it comfortable to fall asleep. My only two complaints were entertainment (movie selections were old) and approx 30 mins before landing the crew started to collect the blankets despite the cabin air temperature remaining cold. Maybe wait for passengers to get off the plane before collecting the blankets.

Excellent! Although it stinks to pay extra for leg room and then have no screen option.

Very much dislike: Airline requires check-in at the Airport Airline does not work with TSA PreCheck

Overall a great experience. Only complaint was the movie selection was pretty limited, but that's pretty minor in the grand scheme of things and easy to overcome.

The crew was unfriendly front check-in. The filth in the plane was so disappointing. I could smell dirt and looked up and there was literally dirt that was blowing in through the air. Old food on the seat back tray in front of me so I didn’t use it. No toilet paper in the bathroom and scum/old dirt next to the seats.

No blanket pillow headphones, not even a water or snack makes for a very uncomfortable flight. There are too many extra fees that should be basic and standard included.

There was no communication about the check-in process, even the fact that Norse doesn’t do online check-in! And once we were at the Los Angeles airport (LAX), there was no signage or assistance about where to check in. I kept Googling for 3rd party information until I finally found on the airport website that we had to check in at Terminal 1 and be bussed back to Terminal B, the international terminal. How were we supposed to know that?! Otherwise, the flight itself was comfortable and the attendants were helpful and friendly. I just feel like we were lucky to have managed the check-in and boarding process on our own - why keep it a secret??

The flight was comfortable, smooth, hardly any bumps even though we encountered some jetstream. The onboard entertainment could be jazzed up a little, the TV shows were old ans not much variety. The movies we ok. The staff was pleasant. The Orlando ground crew was excellent, they were pleasantand friendly. My kids and I were seated separately but the Orlando crew was able to reassign us together. The ground crew at Gatwick, UK need some work on attitude, they were not so sociable. All in all wonderful flight to and from England. I will be definitely traveling with Norse again. Ps...Norse need to work on an app for both Android and iOS.

Crew at airport who completed boarding were incredibly and blatantly rude and unhelpful. 0/10 customer service. I was going to upgrade my seat to first class and upon asking, I was met with an awful attitude so I changed my mind.

Boarding was a disaster. 2 hours in line to get boarding passes and we had no luggage to check in. Coffee was $4 so is water. 11 and a half hour’s flight and food was not included. You could purchase the food but it was complete garbage, This is worse than spirit airline. Never again

Every host and pilot were very professional. My next flight would be upgraded from economy to the next group.

I asked for a window seat and when I got on the plane 24A did not have a window so was very not happy, but good and entertainment was good and the staff was very good, so the only complaint was the seating.

My seat was in a good row. In our section it was the first row. But it was difficult tooperate seat entertainment features > table, screen, even though I often fly.

My worst flying experience so far. This flight was delayed a total of 42 hours and diverted to New York before it was finally cancelled. It was delayed 4 and a half hours in London. As we were scanning our boarding passes at the gate they advised that the flight was being diverted to JFK since the delays caused us to missed the open hours for Charlotte international customs and immigration. We were assured multiple times by airport personnel, flight attendants, and the Pilot that we would land at JFK go through customs and immigration and then reboard the plane to fly to Charlotte in the same night. When we landed in New York the pilot advised us as we were retrieving our carry on luggage that we were delayed till 10am the next morning and to see guest services to get a room for the night. During this time I had to purchase a room for a family member in Charlotte which drove over 4 and a half hours to pick us up from Charlotte. This could have been avoided if American Airlines had been up front about the delay. Then after standing in line for over 2 and a half hours at guest services we were taken by taxi to a hotel 30 minutes out of the way. Luckily I looked for other flights that night and found one at 8 am to get on. The initial flight which we were scheduled to fly to charlotte in was delayed 12 more times and was finally cancelled 42 hours after it was supposed to land. I am unaware of what happened to the guest that were supposed to fly on the flight after we were placed on another flight but 42 hours in delays for a direct flight is absolutely ridiculous.

The boarding to Gatwick was a breeze but the boarding from Gatwick was a nightmare. The onboard service to Gatwick had a lot to be desired but the onboard sevice from Gatwick was amazing ! Very nice, friendly and funny ! Would I recommend BA to anyone.? ! Yes I would!

Really quick check in and security at Heathrow Terminal 5. Staff on board were lovely and very friendly. Could have provided a few more drinks on the flight but they were available at the back of the plane.

Flight delayed an hour due to plane maintenance issues after getting in line to board. Issue was plane galley ovens which eliminated hot meals for overseas flight. Cold selections were limited due to availability. Drink and meal service (already an hour delayed) was very slow. Upon arrival in Nashville, had to sit at gate for about 15 minutes before disembarking with no explanation. Local police then boarded plane as we were disembarking so maybe that was the issue.

Boarding good. Seats uncomfortable when lie flat. Food was awful. Tasted stale and chicken was dry. No live tv or flight map. Had to pay for internet.

Poor technical details on this plane. 1) There was no WiFi on an 8 hour long-haul flight. So no work could be done. That's below the standard expected for airlines these days. 2) The power outlet at my seat was busted and not working. 3) The headphone jack was loose and I had to keep adjusting my headphones to get good reception, or when it slipped out. - The flight was delayed to due mechanics. Sometimes this can't be avoided, I understand, and it's a big inconvenience to arrive that much later when traveling across time zones (then arriving at 4am from the prior time zone). - Also unique to this flight, the northern lights were visible on the right side of the aircraft, but I only found out after we landed (b/c again no wifi). I understand there are considerations about people being out of their seats to look, but I feel extremely disappointed and resentful that I wasn't told so that I could have a chance to look at this probably once-in-a-lifetime cosmic event from a view in the sky. - Flight crew was otherwise friendly and helpful.

I would have preferred something lighter for the second meal. Maybe a small sandwich .

Top 5 airlines serving from London to Miami

Not great. Flight attendants were aloof, food was mediocre, seats that I paid $150 were given to someone else without any concession. I will probably never use kayak again. Terrible experience from start to finish.

The wine was low quality Finnair label stuff in small bottles and only one small bottle each. Embarassinng. A competing airline served me two generous glasses of a nice South African Shiraz from regular wine bottles, a Beck's beer, and a generous Dewar's White Label on the rocks. Cabin service was good and polite, plane interior was beautiful, but cramped.

Great flight- smooth, nice crew, nice clean aircraft, departed a little late but arrived 10 early.

It was listed on my ticket as Finnair but there was no indication that the flight was Finnair. In fact the number was even different. There were no employees there until exactly 2 hours before so we had to wait in line at Iberia and hope

The flight was Finnair but there was no indications anywhere that the checkin was for Finnair also. There was no one to ask. I think at a minimum they should list the code shares so people don’t stand in the wrong line for an hour.

Flight ok, but me and other two passengers didn’t have connection with the entertainment in our seats. So, no movies, no games, no music… for 9 hours. The crew just told us that there’s nothing they can do but I noticed during the flight that there were empty seats, so they could have offered to us to change seats. Customer service could be better.

Had a nice flight to London on BA will fly with them again in the future

Finnair cancelled my flight 12 hours prior to leaving for Helsinki. They stated there were mechanical problems. I had to scurry around to find a new flight that would meet my needs for arrival in Helsinki. Luckily I was able to find alternate transportation through Lufthansa/United.

I’m very disappointed, to fly into an airplane for 10 straight hours, and not having a TV even though when I put the ticket I was told that I will have entertainment for the TV. Very disappointed.

Helpful steward. Allowed me to move to some empty seats and I was able to get some sleep. He also had milk for my tea. Americans don’t realise that cream or half and half ruin tea.

Crew Very nice people, The food was mediocre. Entertainment outdated. The English of the announcements were very hard to understand. Luckily there was nothing serious.

The flight crew was top notch. Total professionals, they worked to help everyone fit their luggage on board and get comfortable. Like many European airlines, dinner service included wine with no extra charge. Always a nice touch. On our layover, everyone needed to clear passport control, which looks like a horrible time sink when you have a connection. My compliments to the ground crew who tried to move people with tight connects to the front of the line. I don't know whether they were Air Portugal employees or not, but they were some people's heroes. I'm not a fan of airline pricing that doesn't give you a reasonably realistic idea of your total cost. Checked baggage on Air Portugal is very expensive and negates any other price advantage. Seat selection is also quite costly. My biggest complaint about this airline is their boarding process. There is no info available to passengers on the screens in the boarding lounges. Just long lines that stretch into other gate areas and too few people offering any clarifying info at all. Those who try to direct often ended up yelling into the crowd. On my last leg, they called for boarding groups over the PA system, but when I presented myself, I was sent back to the end of the single line even though others in later groups were ahead of me. It was a confusing mashup of two systems that left everyone disgruntled and took over an hour. I don't think I can recommend this airline if you have any other options.

The check in process was terrible. Took a long time to check in because there is not enough agents. Once we got to gate, no announcement to board, all of a sudden people got up and board. The seats were EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE. It was a 3 hours international flight, and we were served one tiny cup of water. 😩😩 The temperature was so hot inside rhe plane we thought we were sitting in an oven. Very difficult to find a flight attendant for assistance. They ran up and down aisle to serve first class but never really look up to seve the rest of the flight. I would never fly on this airline again. The experience was horrible.

What didnt i like? You had to pay for seats after the booking was paid for. If i knew that beforehand i would have booked with emirates for a few dollars more

Efficiency was great - on-time takeoff and landing. Baggage arrived at destination (there's always slow baggage handling in Boston.) TAP food is spartan - bring your own. But the efficiency of the airline more than makes up for the mediocre cuisine.

Most important was the effciency - on-time take-offs and landings, no missed connections, baggage arrived correctly. Friendly & professional crew. Less important was food/drink. Pretty spartan, but we'll know next time and bring our own stuff.

I wish to bring to your attention an incident involving a flight attendant that occurred on my recent journey. The attendant displayed a lack of courtesy, which was concerning. For instance, after accidentally spilling water on a passenger, the attendant dismissed the situation rather than offering a proper apology. Additionally, when I handed over my trash, the attendant reacted negatively because I placed a paper cup on the tray, she told me this doesn't go here and threw it back on my table. It was apparent that she was experiencing a challenging day, which unfortunately impacted the service provided to myself and other passengers. While I understand that everyone can have an off day, it is essential for customer-facing staff to seek support to manage personal stress without it affecting their professional responsibilities.

I suspect that there was an item pilfered from my bag at the TAP automated check-in counter on March 26th at Heathrow Airport around 11:30am. I think that the employee assisting me with my bags took something out of it when I was not paying attention because today, March 27th there is a notebook missing. Please check the camera to see if indeed this occurred. My description: Male, African Decent, 5'8, 180lbs medium build, wearing trousers and a jacket. Employee description: Female, Indian Decent (guessing) 5'7, slight build. Flight 1359, London to Lisbon.

TAP Air makes you take a bus on arrival or departure, making it difficult for passengers to make connections.

I needed to add "Special Request" meal for myself and my trveling companion, and I ended up having to call their Customer Service. It took a while to get through but eventually I connected with a very proffessional and nice representative who took my request. In the middle of the conversation we were disconnected , as I was trying to all back, the TAP representative actually called me back and confirmed the special request for meals....he called me back from Portugal ! I was absolutely amazed, because that does not happen here in the USA. Perhaps some of the other airlines can learn from TAP's Customer Service. TAP's website at times can be difficult ,such as adding my TSA number. Ended up having it added at the TAP desk at the airport.

Just like the famous London Eye, Miami gets its own mega Ferris wheel for sightseeing

  • Associated Press

Downtown Miami’s skyline has a major new $18 million player. The Skyviews Miami Observation Wheel debuted recently at the Bayside Marketplace.

The 200-foot high Ferris wheel — or observation wheel, as it’s known in the tourism biz — allows you to take in spectacular views of Biscayne Bay and the city’s skyline. There are 42 climate-controlled gondolas with music and video features.

Each enclosed gondola can hold up to eight people, staying in compliance with state and local COVID-19 guidelines. Masks are required.

There is one VIP gondola with a glass floor, leather bucket seats and a custom LED light show.

The ride lasts about 15 minutes.

Skyviews Miami is modeled after the instantly recognizable London Eye, which sits on the South bank of the Thames River and is one of the most popular tourist attractions throughout the United Kingdom. The London Eye, also called the Millennium Wheel (it opened in 2000), is 443 feet tall.

Orlando also has a similar tourist experience called the Wheel at Icon Park, which opened in 2015. More popularly known as the Orlando Eye, that observation wheel is twice as high, at 400 feet, as Skyviews Miami.

Skyviews Miami was designed by Switzerland-based Ronald Bussink, a giant in the Ferris wheel/amusement park industry.

Chris Santarelli, a spokesman for Ashkenazy Acquisition Corporation, which operates Bayside Marketplace, explains the commitment it took to complete Skyviews Miami, “Over the last three years, various public and private stakeholders have worked to build community and local business support for this project and gain appropriate public sector approvals before putting a shovel into the ground. The construction ... required significant time and, like many other businesses, our plans were disrupted by COVID-19-related delays.”

At the ribbon-cutting last month remarks were made by City of Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, Commissioner Manolo Reyes and William Talbert III, the president and CEO of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Where: Skyviews Miami is located at 401 Biscayne Blvd., in Miami.

Hours: 3-10 p.m. Wednesdays-Fridays; noon-10 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Skyviews Miami is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Admission: $16.82 for adults; $14.95 for seniors and active military (with ID); $12.85 for children ages 4-12 and free for children under the age of 4.

There is a $14.95 special discounted rate through Nov. 15 for Florida residents with ID. This admission must be purchased at the on-site ticket booth.

How to visit Miami on a budget

If you don't have far to travel, Citi Bikes can be a great way to see the sights in Miami while keeping costs down © lazyllama/ Shutterstock

With its ever-growing skyline and mansion-laden private islands, Miami can come across as a playground for the rich. But does it really require a hefty bankroll? It just depends on what kind of vacation you're looking for.

Sure, you can spring for the Fontainebleau at $400 a night, but you can just as easily find a SoBe hostel or even a standard hotel room for a fraction of that price. And while there are plenty of James Beard Award-winning restaurants to choose from, some of the city's top dining experiences can be enjoyed for $20 or less.

Budget-conscious travelers can also get around Miami without going broke and still have a great time. There are several public transit options available to those with a smidge of patience, and they offer the chance to people-watch and get a glimpse of a Miami that most tourists don't even notice. And when it comes to free experiences, the city is chock-full of them if you know where to look.

Here's how to enjoy Miami on a budget.

Daily Costs in Miami

  • Hostel room: $30–90
  • Basic room for two: $150–300+
  • Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): $80–200+
  • Public transit ticket: $2.25
  • Cafe con leche: $2–4
  • Sandwich: $15
  • Dinner for two: $40–60
  • Beer at the bar: $8

Average daily cost: $175

An arial view of Miami Beach in June, with dark gray rain clouds looming in the sky

Plan to visit in peak hurricane season if you can

If your vacation time is flexible and you're feeling brave, lucky or both, consider looking for flights in August or September. While hurricane season starts up in June, it really takes off during this period. Coupled with the return of the school year, the intense heat (August is especially roasty) and the near-daily afternoon showers, it's also the cheapest time to visit Miami. The good thing is that hurricanes don't just appear overnight. If one does make its way to the city, you'll have time to make alternative plans.

Also, be aware that even when Miami is shown in the trajectory of a hurricane, by the time it finally reaches the city, it's often much weaker than initially anticipated. This means you might just experience a full day of high winds and rain but not a full-on hurricane, with the bonus being that the weather is generally quite pleasant (cool, dry and sunny) post-storm.

Find out the best time to visit Miami for your perfect vacation

Shop around for your flight (MIA isn't always the cheapest)

Booking your flight as early as possible is always recommended, but that's not the only way to save. While Miami International Airport (MIA) has plenty of flight options, it can actually be pricier than the next closest airport: Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL). Yes, it's a bit of a hike from Miami, but it's always wise to keep an eye on flights for both airports.

Bonus: the Tri-Rail is accessible from FLL, which you can use to get down to Miami if you've opted against renting a car.

Orange-and-green trolley buses are waiting to pick up passengers at Brickell Trolley Bus Station in Miami

Use free public transit options when available

As a major commuter town, Miami is best-traversed from the comfort of a rental car. However, if you're not looking to wander too far from your hotel or hostel, you might be able to get away with using public transit. Moreover, Miami has several free public transit options to choose from (and the rest are relatively low-cost as well).

City of Miami Trolleys run in a variety of Miami neighborhoods, including Wynwood, Coconut Grove, Little Havana and Allapattah. Other areas of Miami-Dade run their own free trolleys, from Miami Beach to Coral Gables.

If you find yourself downtown, the cheapest way to get around is undoubtedly the totally free-of-charge Metromover . It's slower-moving than the Metrorail (the city's somewhat limited but still-useful train option), but it can give you some excellent views of the city and Biscayne Bay. You can take it anywhere from the Adrienne Arsht Center to Museum Park (home to the Pérez Art Museum Miami and Frost Museum of Science ), Bayside Marketplace to Bayfront Park , and as far south as Brickell (home to plenty of high rises, restaurants and bars).

Want to explore further? Take the Metrorail and head south to Coconut Grove (you'll need to transfer to a bus or Uber to get close to the shops and restaurants); South Miami or Dadeland (another popular shopping center); or north to Allapattah, a historically lower-income neighborhood currently seeing a bit of a gentrification-based renaissance and now home to attractions like Superblue and the Rubell Family Art Collection .

Hit the ground running with our Miami transportation guide

Rent or borrow a bike to get around

While Miami is not known for its huge biking culture, it's still a solid way to get around a smaller neighborhood. And don't worry, you don't have to bring your bike along with you.

Citi Bikes are the local rent-a-bike option. They're readily available all across Miami Beach and all along the coast on the mainland from Little River down through Wynwood, Downtown, Brickell and to Coconut Grove. At $7.95 per hour (or $24 per day), it's a relatively inexpensive way to see the city up close, sans parking headaches.

Oh, and finally, check if your hotel has a bike-borrowing system – you'd be surprised how many offer this as an amenity.

Skip the ocean view hotel rooms

Sure, an ocean-view room can be worth it, but is it always necessary? Clearly not. And if you're on a tighter budget, you'll likely want to shop around and stay at either a hostel or a smaller boutique hotel. Any hotel with ocean (or skyline) views will generally upcharge anywhere from $30–80 for the scenic outlook. Save that money for Miami's other attractions. You can always try to book a hotel that has rooftop access so you can still snag some great views (and great selfies) without the extra cost.

People are sitting on or walking up the stairs of the Pérez Art Museum in Miami

Take advantage of free museum days

Miami is home to a plethora of museums, and over the years, they have become increasingly accessible and affordable. The Pérez Art Museum, Gold Coast Railroad Museum , The Wolfsonian  and The Bass are just some of the museums offering free days at least once a month.

If your travel dates don't align, there are plenty of other museums that are free year-round, including the Institute of Contemporary Art , the Frost Art Museum and the Lowe Art Museum . Travelers with disabilities can also enjoy certain museums free of charge, from HistoryMiami to MOCA NoMi (with free sensory days once a month at the Miami Children's Museum ).

Grab any necessities at your nearest grocery store

Pharmacies like Walgreens and CVS are a dime a dozen in Miami, but beware of those located in touristy areas like South Beach , as their prices tend to be higher. So where can you go to get a better deal? No doubt you've heard the locals sing the praises of Publix. Find your nearest store for lower prices on necessities including deodorant, sunscreen and toothpaste. Depending on where you are in town, you can also pop into Sedanos or Winn-Dixie for even better prices.

Venture into your nearest Latin food-by-the-pound spot...

Of course, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention where to get cheap eats in the Magic City. While you might want to flex your credit card for a night at one of the city's many award-winning restaurants, you can still eat well without going broke at the nearest Latin food-by-the-pound restaurant. Don't be confused by the name, though; these places aren't always weighing your food. What they are doing is loading up a styrofoam container to the brim with all sorts of yummy goodness – the kind that's also excellent reheated.

Get your fill of Cuban cuisine like arroz con pollo (chicken and rice) at Palacio de los Jugos , or venture into a Nicaraguan eatery called a fritanga to taste delicious gallo pinto (a rice and beans dish), carne asada (grilled marinated steak) and fried cheese.

A street-food stand has many metal containers filled with different Latin foods such and empanadas and rice dishes

...or pick up legit Latin food from a street vendor

If you're looking for something a little less dense, you can always check out local street food vendors to see what cheap, tasty treats they've got. Yes, some food trucks nowadays sell fusion foods that are pricier than you might expect, but many remain reasonably priced. El Bori  is a food truck serving up delightful Puerto Rican bites like empanadillas (turnovers), cheese dogs and alcapurrias (fritters) for under $10. Smaller food carts selling Colombian arepas de choclo (sweet corn cakes) are often a staple at tourist hot spots and local events, and you can usually grab something yummy for around $5.

Seek out free festivals, art crawls and more

The party is always on somewhere in Miami and, more often than not, you won't even have to pay. If you're on the beach and seeking cheap nighttime activities, check out the Miami Beach Culture Crawl on the third Thursday of the month. It features different activities each month, from backstage tours to exhibition openings and more. Viernes Culturales in the Little Havana neighborhood is another arts and culture crawl where you can check out vendors, dance to live music and really get a taste of Cuban-American cultura . Speaking of which, Calle Ocho , which takes place every March, is one of the largest music festivals in town, and it's free of charge.

Music lovers should also be aware of the WALLCAST Concerts and the  SoundScape Cinema Series staged just outside of the New World Symphony . And don't forget all the farmers markets, author events at places such as Books & Books , and more totally free events going on year-round.

For those wondering how to explore what to do in downtown Miami conveniently, utilizing these options can save time and money.

Safety is paramount, and like any major city, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and take basic precautions. This includes staying in well-lit areas at night and being cautious with personal belongings.

When deciding between staying in Miami Beach or downtown Miami, it’s important to consider the type of experience you’re seeking. Miami Beach, with its iconic beaches, Art Deco architecture, and oceanfront resorts, is perfect for those looking for a beachside holiday with a touch of historical charm.

In recent years, there has been a notable trend of people moving to Miami, making it their permanent home. This influx has been particularly evident in areas like Brickell, where Brickell movers  have seen an increased number of individuals and families relocating to the area. This shift is indicative of Miami’s growing appeal not just as a tourist destination but also as a desirable place to live. The combination of a thriving job market, favorable climate, and the vibrant lifestyle that Miami offers makes it an attractive option for many.

In summary, downtown Miami is a dynamic and diverse area known for its cultural richness, walkability, and unique urban experience. Whether one chooses to stay in Miami Beach or downtown Miami depends on one’s personal preferences, but either option promises an unforgettable experience. With the increasing number of people choosing to call Miami home, the city continues to grow and evolve, further cementing its status as a world-class destination.
