Of these, The Shape of Water is a Best Picture winner.
  • He studied at Juilliard school from 1988 to 1992, having been a member of the Drama Division's Group 21. • Film, for me, has been a process of learning on the job.
  • I've done a lot of theater work that has been quite diverse. I feel very fortunate to have had many different people think of me in many different ways. So, as an actor that's all you - all I want is diversity. So far in film and television work I have done has not been as diverse, and I hope it grows to be.
  • I think the theater work and the on-camera work feed off each other. My theater work has become more simple, and my on-camera work has become more energized or more spontaneous.
  • Most of the people in New York are very often from somewhere else.
  • I wanted to be a cartoonist. I was one of those kids who sat around and drew in my room all the time.

Michael Stuhlbarg On His EverSurprising Screen Career from A Serious Man to Dopesick

Take one look at Michael Stuhlbarg ’s résumé over the past year, and you’ll find an actor willing to take on some controversial parts. In both Hulu’s Dopesick , for which he’s nominated for the supporting-actor Emmy, and HBO Max’s The Staircase , the 54-year-old played characters based on real-life people who then came out against the projects, either directly or more publicly . In the case of Dopesick , in fact, Stuhlbarg received a letter from David Sackler ’s lawyers during production on the show, which tackles the origins of the opioid epidemic and closely follows the Sackler family, who founded Purdue Pharma. The decision made was to not respond: “Engaging with the Sacklers, because of issues of litigation and otherwise, it’s a slippery slope,” Stuhlbarg says on this week’s Little Gold Men (listen below). “I try to take the advice of those people I’m working with.”

michael stuhlbarg star trek

That ethos sums up a big part of Stuhlbarg’s career: This is a working actor who, over decades, has learned to navigate a tough business by focusing strictly on his craft and getting the job done. He finds he still doesn’t have much choice, in terms of going from project to project, but since his breakout in Joel and Ethan Coen ’s A Serious Man in 2010, he’s gotten to work with some of the best directors around, in meaty and complex roles: Guillermo del Toro, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Luca Guadagnino, and so on.

In Dopesick , Stuhlbarg brings an unsettling physicality and vocal pattern for Sackler, the product of a long research period and a certain level of interpretation. It’s one of many situations where he didn’t expect to be considered for the part—and, given the biographical nature of the story, felt extra pressure to get it right. “The fun lies in the details of things—it helps everything I do to pay as close attention and to learn as much as I can, understanding that we are telling a particular version of the story and hoping that, whether or not the person I'm playing is going to watch it, I honor what it was that they went through,” Stuhlbarg says. “I really try to not judge who it is I’m playing. I’m stepping into someone’s shoes and trying to navigate what it must have been like under their circumstances to do what it was they were doing.”

During our conversation, Stuhlbarg reflected on his big movie break in A Serious Man , having already established himself as a Tony-nominated Broadway mainstay but, until then, seemingly unable to break through Hollywood. Through his access to the Coens as the film’s lead, he got a front-row seat to the process of great moviemaking: “Joel told me that he found that my rhythms were a particular way…. It was the beginning of a learning process of understanding how films are made, what film acting is. I really think it has everything to do with my just being ready to enter that world at that time after struggling for a number of years and not understanding why I hadn’t been utilized much. I don’t think I knew.”

Flash-forward a little over a decade, and Stuhlbarg gets quite a showcase in Dopesick , brilliantly playing the series’s big pharma villain. You sense he’s still figuring things out, though, on the fly—and in the best way. The actor credits much of the strength and spontaneity of his performance to his surprise at being cast in the part in the first place. It pushed him to give it his all, to try new things. “I’m always looking for something that will be frightening, or something you don’t necessarily see yourself in, but someone else does,” he says. “The fact that someone else will see you in a particular role can be enough to give you the impetus to want to give it a try.”

Movie Interviews

Michael stuhlbarg, a 'serious' fellow about his craft.

Mark Jenkins

In The Clutch: Stage veteran Michael Stuhlbarg gets his first leading movie role — as a panicky physics professor — in Joel and Ethan Coen's latest film. A Serious Man is "a sort of innocence-to-experience story," he says, though its outcome is uncertain. Wilson Webb hide caption

When he's developing a role, actor Michael Stuhlbarg likes to draw a picture of the person he's planning to play. So while he was under consideration for two parts in Joel and Ethan Coen's A Serious Man — central character Larry Gopnik or his brother, Arthur — he sketched them both.

David Edelstein Reviews:

'a serious man,' at sea in a tragically absurd world.

He was eventually cast as Larry, who Stuhlbarg says "came out to be very much like I expected him to be. The only thing that changed was glasses. Originally, I had Arthur with glasses and Larry without. And it ended up being the opposite."

Such physical details are important to the 40-year-old actor, who's better known for theater than movies. To play a horrifically abused man in The Pillowman, a dark Broadway drama he did for seven months in 2005, Stuhlbarg gained 50 pounds and added scars and a tuft of white hair that most audience members couldn't even see.

"It served that character in kind of a beautiful way," he says.

Like Larry Gopnik, Stuhlbarg is a mild-mannered Jewish guy from an everyday suburban background. The big difference between the two is that the actor enjoyed A Serious Man much more than his character does. The Coen Brothers' movie, set in the late-'60s Minnesota of their own youth, has been likened to the story of Job: An unassuming middle-class physics professor, Larry suddenly learns that his wife wants a divorce, his brother is being sought by the police and his chances for tenure have been undermined by an anonymous smear campaign. Larry might have turned to a psychiatrist, or perhaps just shared a joint with his 13-year-old son, Danny, an avid weed smoker. Instead, he undertakes a series of frustrating attempts to get counseling from a rabbi.

Stuhlbarg and Sari Lennick, who plays Larry's wife, Judith, decided that the character wasn't particularly devout. "I think Judith was the family's religious guide," the actor says. "That's the scenario Sari and I created. Larry doesn't think much about his spiritual nature, until a friend encourages him to go see the rabbi. I don't he would have thought of that on his own."

Stuhlbarg played the brutalized brother of a murder suspect in Martin McDonagh's dark Broadway fable The Pillowman .

Since it begins with an ersatz Yiddish parable and includes Danny's pot-addled bar mitzvah, might not A Serious Man strike the average megaplex viewer as more of a comparative religion class than a black comedy?

"That's a good question," ponders Stuhlbarg. "But I wouldn't think so. Someone who's asking questions of the clergy, that he doesn't have the answers to, I think that's a universal predicament. The movie talks about some things that are particular to Judaism, but I'd like to believe that it doesn't preclude anyone from understanding the ideas."

Originally, the Coens have said, Larry and Danny were supposed to have equal weight in the story. The script came to favor the father, but he has an almost childlike nature.

"In many ways Larry is an innocent at the beginning of the story," Stuhlbarg says. "It is a sort of innocence-to-experience story. Although he doesn't quite reach knowledge. I think he's living the way he thought he should. And then things ... happen."

Things are still happening as the movie ends, leaving both Larry and the audience hanging. Despite all his work on the character's back story, Stuhlbarg says he's pretty much in the same position.

"I'm curious about what happens to Larry Gopnik," Stuhlbarg admits. "I wish I knew. But we don't know."

Curious though he may be, Stuhlbarg declines to speculate on the film's meaning. "I leave that up to the audience," he says gently. "It doesn't really matter what I think."

Movie Reviews

Tv/streaming, collections, great movies, chaz's journal, contributors, wise words: michael stuhlbarg on "call me by your name".

michael stuhlbarg star trek

Michael Stuhlbarg has become an MVP of supporting actors, a crucial life source to numerous prestigious films that need his humanistic, sensitive touch. In this year alone, he’ll have worked with Steven Spielberg (“The Post”) and Guillermo del Toro (“The Shape of Water”), and, in the past, he has become a vital instrument for the likes of Martin Scorsese , Danny Boyle and Denis Villeneuve .

Stuhlbarg’s ability to make any amount of screen-time matter hits a high-note with his performance in “ Call Me by Your Name ,” a romance from Italian director Luca Guadagnino . Stuhlbarg plays a professorial father who witnesses his 17-year-old son Elio ( Timothee Chalamet ) fall for an older man, a teacher’s assistant named Oliver ( Armie Hammer ), over the course of a summer in the Italian countryside. After the two young men have an experience that changes them both forever, Stuhlbarg’s character provides a monologue that has the ability to fill your heart to its breaking point, adding to the haunting quality of this impeccable movie about beauty and longing.

RogerEbert.com spoke with Stuhlbarg about his special monologue, his experience working with our greatest living directors, his passion for acting and more.

The current talk about your performance in this film reminds me of how you surprised people with your 2009 breakout role in " A Serious Man ." Since then, in your life as a professional actor, do you feel you’re more ingrained in your craft, or confident? Is it easier? Is it still a kind of an unstable challenge?

It’s always an unstable challenge.

I was wondering if you ever feel like a Larry Gopnik in the acting world.

Well, it depends on the job! [laughs] But honestly, every time I get the opportunity to do something, it’s always disarming and challenging and a surprise. Sometimes the roles I get to play has some resonance with me, sometimes they have less. But over the last eight or nine years, I brought all of those experiences with me, and I hope they inform what I do from here on out. It never ceases to be a challenge, it never ceases to be new, because it is. And it’s always surprising every time you jump in.

Does working with a big name director make you want to jump into the role?

It’s always inspiring, and the common thread with the folks that I’ve worked with seems to be passion for the material, and a genuine interest in what the hell it is they’re making and doing, which is inspiring. Whether it’s Danny Boyle, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg or Denis Villeneuve. They’re all questioning, they’re all discovering it moment to moment. They’re all just in love with the craft that they’re practicing. It’s exciting, it’s why they are who they are, they make you inspired to want to do the best work that you can. You show up excited to meet them, and you’re like I can’t believe I’m with this person, and then you start talking, and you combine your minds and collaborate and you want to make the best thing you can. I've felt really lucky, and I hope the good fortune continues.

It is quite a resume you’ve built.

I’ve been very lucky.

michael stuhlbarg star trek

Do you feel there is special power to supporting acting? Are you also looking to do more lead roles?

Uh, yeah, sure. Whatever comes my way. It’s not like I’ve chosen a genre or anything like that.

But there have been a lot of great actors who have done just as great supporting work, like Philip Seymour Hoffman .

Sure, sure. But he was the master of everything he did, as far as I’m concerned. Watching anything he did, whether it was a small or large thing. [As a supporting actor] you really are sort of tapped to come in and provide a certain energy, or cover to a story. And I’m glad to provide that as much as I can, particularly with artists that I admire. I want to work with the best people out there, and to have the largest challenges that can be thrown at me. Whatever that is, I’m open to it.

It’s telling that they all want to work with you.

That’s luck.

Do you particularly like talking about the process of acting?

I think sometimes if I’m on a set, for instance, I’d much rather do as opposed to talk about certain things. I find that, providing an idea going into a scene, to perhaps give yourself a number of different tactics or actions that you may want to be playing, or ideas in how a scene could be ... it’s best to just show the director as opposed to necessarily talking too much about it. Because in the end, that’s where you can actually see the difference. You can hypothesize until you’re blue in the face and speak eloquently on something, but it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t show up.

And I like the surprise in the doing it, as well. I mean, I’m one who likes to talk about acting. There’s a spontaneity that exists on movie sets which is something of your first impression on a particular day. Which you ideally would love to be able to capture, if it’s one of those aspects of the scenes that you’re making on that day. I love being surprised and I love surprising myself. And as they say, if you surprise yourself then you surprise other people. And the more interested you are and the more you can do that.

You have a full character in the movie, and the monologue at the end is a type of surprise. How did you approach that passage, rhythmically? There’s a musicality to it.

Yes, there is. That’s the beauty of Andre Aciman ’s writing. And it was taken almost verbatim from the novel, so there’s little I had to do with that, the musicality of the language. But I did have the benefit of living with it for almost the entire time we shot the film. I had the benefit of shooting this story in chronological order, so as I got to know the actors and as my character watched the other characters going through what they were going through, the text that had been given to me, I had a lot of time to live with it. To try it a million different ways in private and let it sort of reverberate for me in different ways. Until the day, when I was just ready to give it a whirl and see what would come on that day. It could have been different the following day. And we did maybe two or three takes of it from different angles, and we just let it be what it was. There were probably more emotional takes we could have done. But I think, wisely, Luca decided to choose the one he chose. So yeah, I had the benefit of living it with it for some time. And letting what it had to offer reverberate with me.

michael stuhlbarg star trek

Was the set as laid-back as the movie is? What was the energy of the set?

I don’t remember for how long we were there, as I wasn’t there on set everyday but I was present for a lot of it. There was a great sense of buoyancy in what Luca wanted the whole experience to be for everybody. Not just in the storytelling but in the doing of it. And I think it was just a wonderfully, lovely environment for lack of a better word. We laughed a lot, we enjoyed our time together. The film is a really wonderful keepsake of making the movie, which is something that I’m so happy about. Because sometimes making films is hard and complicated, as was this one, in different ways. It was a great keepsake and I think that’s because he had these ideas of how he wanted the movie to be. Allowing it breadth, allowing it lightness, allowing it humor. Generosity, and compassion. All of that. All of that was a part of the filmmaking and I think it shows.

What’s interesting about the film is that it has this compassion and warmth, but there is a definitively haunting quality to it. I was curious as to what your take is about the monologue, where every audience member will wonder, “Have I lived this great love?" or, "Will I ever have it?”

It’s a very human thing. I think we all wonder about those paths in our lives that we’ve had. What we’ve decided to act upon, what we haven’t acted upon. Those moments that we think about in our lives and you think, I wish that moment were back again. I could live in that moment for a huge amount of time. I wish I had done this, I wish I hadn’t done that . There is regret in the movie. In that sense, Professor Pearlman has lived a life that in some ways, he may have touched upon. The kind of weighty love that Elio is feeling, but may not have made the same choices. We don’t know what Elio does, necessarily. I think that lives in all of us.

Are you a more glass half-full or half-empty kind of person?

Me? I can’t help but be optimistic. As pessimistic as I can get, and as bitter and angry as I can get, I can’t help sensing, I think, a great sense of optimism. About how beautiful the world can be. I get that from my wonderful parents, their sense of love and humor. I’ve inherited that. It’s a hard time to be alive in this environment right now, in this country and in the world. Not to say that any other time can’t be more complicated, because everyone experiences their own ups and downs. But I’d like to believe that we could all love and help each other in this perverse and fantastical experience we’re all going through. So why not try to help each other, as opposed to making it more difficult?

michael stuhlbarg star trek

"Perverse and fantastical" is a great way of putting it.

It’s all absurd, what we’re going through. What we’re going through every day is so absurd. But how fabulous that we’re actually alive for a while? And why not make the most of it. We don’t remember that enough. I certainly don’t.

Even as someone who is optimistic?

If I can be a part of reminding people how wonderful life is, in one of my more optimistic moments, then all the better. I get as down, if not more so than anybody else that I’ve ever met. But I just want to hold onto the good moments a thousand fold, as much as possible. I want to laugh with people, I want to have a good time with people. I would love to be a free and open spirit. I think one of the difficulties of adulthood is in the process of learning things and the slings and arrows that get thrown in our way affect us and change us. And we carry our scars with us. As we get older, it becomes more of a challenge to not remain open to share life with people. I have to constantly remind myself, and surround myself with people who remind me not to take things so seriously, or just to remember how good things can be.

Do you think any of that is informed by your profession? Do you think your outlook would be different if you were just a lawyer, out in the world?

Absolutely. I don’t know that I could do anything else, now that I think about it, other than be an illustrator or a painter, which is something that I do in my spare time. I paint, draw, sketch.

I’d love to see it.

Some day, maybe I’ll get a chance to show it. I’d love to do more of it. Yeah, we all bring our experiences with us. And who we are affects the choices we make. And I love that at the best of times, with the best of material, perhaps I can make people laugh or make them think. Or we can think that we’re perhaps not so, our individual experiences are not so separate from each other.

When you take on characters, or roles … do you have that goal to connect with audiences beyond just entertainment? Like, “oh, this character speaks to something that people should see.”

I’m always looking for that, honestly. I mean, part of the reason that I got into acting in the first place was seeing Derek Jacobi in “Hamlet” on the BBC video tapes and I was in English class. And he was raging against the world as a young man, how unfair life was. He captured my imagination. I guess it tapped into whatever kind of anger or ferocity or rage that I had at the experience of being alive. But I also love bringing joy to people. So I think I fall between those two. Or at least, my passion for doing what I do falls between wanting to make people feel something desperately and hopefully making them laugh in the process.

Michael Stuhlbarg attacked with a rock in New York City, performs on Broadway the next day

michael stuhlbarg star trek

" Boardwalk Empire " star Michael Stuhlbarg performed on Broadway as planned on Monday, a day after he was allegedly the victim of an assault in New York City.

On Sunday, police responded to an assault in progress after a 55-year-old man was walking near 90th Street and East Drive when "he was struck in the head by an unknown object," the New York City Police Department confirmed in a statement to USA TODAY on Tuesday. Reports from CNN and The New York Times identified the victim as Stuhlbarg.

Police said a preliminary investigation determined that a 27-year-old man, identified as Xavier Israel, threw a rock at Stuhlbarg, which struck him in the back of the neck and caused an abrasion. The actor subsequently "chased" Israel to 9 East 91st Street, where officers took the alleged attacker into custody, according to police. Stuhlbarg "refused medical attention at the scene," police also said. Israel has been charged with assault.

USA TODAY has reached out to a representative for Stuhlbarg for comment.

The incident occurred before Stuhlbarg was set to perform in the Broadway show "Patriots," which was written by " The Crown " creator Peter Morgan. Stuhlbarg stars as Russian businessman Boris Berezovsky in the show.

The actor, who has also appeared in films like " Call Me by Your Name " and " Steve Jobs ," performed in the first preview of "Patriots" on Monday and received a standing ovation, according to the New York Times.

Stuhlbarg wasn't the only actor who was allegedly the victim of a crime in New York City over the weekend. In a post on Instagram , John Cardoza, who is starring in " The Notebook " on Broadway, shared that he was "held at gunpoint" in a Dunkin' in New York on Sunday.

"It started out with him just asking for a dollar, I offered to buy him lunch because I didn't have cash on me, and it escalated from there very quickly," the actor said. "I am fine. Ultimately he didn't make off with anything irreplaceable."

The New York City Police Department confirmed to USA TODAY that a 30-year-old man was approached while buying food at 356 West 145 Street on Sunday by a man who asked for a dollar on Sunday, and the suspect subsequently "simulated a firearm in his pocket and removed the victim’s wallet." Police said that no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Cardoza shared details of the incident as a "PSA" for his followers in New York, urging them to "be vigilant as the weather warms up and more people are out and about."

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

The vagrant who allegedly attacked “Boardwalk Empire” actor Michael Stuhlbarg with a rock on Sunday previously made headlines for pummeling a good Samaritan who tried to give him a coat.

Parolee Xavier Israel, 27 — who allegedly hit Stuhlbarg in the neck while the actor was on a jog near Central Park on the Upper East Side — had been caught-on-video unloading on a 59-year-old man who covered him with his coat in January 2022.

The disturbing video showed Israel lying on a Fifth Avenue subway when the Samaritan removes his coat and covers the homeless man — who promptly jumps to his feet, shoves the Samaritan to the ground and snatches his wallet.

attack

Video shows the victim had tried to retrieve his wallet, but Israel punched him and threw him back to the ground.

Israel fled the scene but was arrested a short time later. Witnesses told police that he stuffed cash inside his pants and officers recovered nearly $1,500 from him, sources previously told The Post.

Israel

Israel was hit with several charges, including assault, robbery and grand larceny.

He was put behind bars on $25,000 bail — a move his lawyer at the time, Brian Kennedy, decried, complaining it went against a policy District Attorney Alvin Bragg implemented on his first day in office that defendants have “a presumption of pretrial nonincarceration in every case” except a handful of major crimes.

They include violent felonies in which victims suffer serious injuries through the use of guns and other deadly weapons, sex offenses, felony domestic violence and public corruption.

“If you’re gonna make that kind of statement in the memo, then you should abide by it,” the lawyer told The Post after the hearing. “They didn’t, [they] argued for bail when he should have been presumptuously released.”

In requesting bail, prosecutors argued that Israel has ties to both Pennsylvania and Ohio, where he has prior arrests for “assault, drug possession, theft, domestic violence assault and has multiple convictions.”

video

Prosecutors also noted that Israel was busted twice for assault in New York in January 2022.

In the first incident, he was accused of punching a man and a woman, both 18, as they sat on a rock in Central Park and shouted obscenities at him. Several days later, he allegedly attacked a 49-year-old woman on Fifth Avenue and East 84th Street after she saw him sleeping on the ground and tried to help.

He was charged with third-degree assault and given desk appearance tickets in both cases.

Kennedy told the judge that Israel was homeless and likely suffering from mental illeness at the time of the incidents.

“He is likely recovering from a mental illness and is impoverished,” he said. “He is possibly suffering from substance abuse.”

Israel was out on parole at the time of the attack on Stuhlbarg following his Dec. 7, 2023 release from state prison.

He’d been sentenced to two years behind bars and two years of post-release supervision after pleading guilty to attempted robbery stemming from the January 2022 incident.

Israel

Israel remained in the custody of the city Department of Correction through November 3, 2023, when he was transferred to state prison. He spent just one month in State Department of Correction custody as he was granted credit toward his 2-year sentence from time served behind bars.

He was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court Monday evening on assault and harassment charges for his alleged attack on Stuhlbarg. Israel was held on $50,000 cash bail in the case.

Stuhlbarg declined medical assistance for the reported pain and bruising on the back of his neck, police and sources said.

The Post has reached out to his reps for comment.

Stuhlbarg has been in New York ahead of staring in “Patriots,” a Broadway play by “The Crown” creator Peter Morgan about the rise of Vladimir Putin.

He will play Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky in the play, which begins previews Monday.

Parker Posey and Michael Stuhlbarg

Parker Posey and Michael Stuhlbarg play opposing counsel in HBO Max’s limited series The Staircase , which is based on the documentary of the same name that followed the trial of Michael Peterson following the 2003 death of his wife, Kathleen.

Because the trial itself was highly publicized at the time and was the focus of a docuseries from director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade, Posey and Stuhlbarg say they had plenty of material to work with in preparing for their roles as prosecutor Freda Black and Peterson’s defense attorney David Rudolf. While Black died in 2018, Rudolf made himself available to both actors to help gear up for the complicated courtroom scenes. Plus, both actors say, creator Antonio Campos supplied stacks and stacks of courtroom files and autopsy photos of Kathleen Peterson to assist.

Posey and Stuhlbarg talk to THR about what drew them to The Staircase , how they prepared for their respective roles and how they supported each other through the dark subject matter.

How did your involvement with the show start?

PARKER POSEY I had the pleasure of meeting Antonio at the Deauville Film Festival in 2008. Antonio had been in his 20s and he reached out to me and befriended me at some little cocktail party, and we just started talking and he invited me to his first film, After School . I was really impressed at how much of a vision he had as a filmmaker. About five years after that, I get an email from him and he’s like, “What are you doing? Let’s go hang out.” I invited him to a loft party in Tin Pan Alley, and he came with his now wife, who is also the editor of The Staircase . And he said, “I had this editor approach me with this movie idea about this documentary called The Staircase . Have you seen that?” I am so into that longform documentary, true-crime stuff … He was like, “Can you play Freda Black?” I was like, “Yeah, I can’t wait.” And then a decade later, he was like, “This is now an HBO series.” I was the first person to come on board.

MICHAEL STUHLBARG I heard about it when I was in the middle of making another project, and I had worked with Antonio before, on After School . It was a really provocative and interesting piece for its time, and very personal for Antonio. When I heard about The Staircase happening, and he wanted me to be a part of it, I jumped at the opportunity. I’d heard that Parker and Colin [Firth] and Toni [Collette] were all going to be a part of it. Everything about it sounded fantastic to me. I was also a fan of the documentary and, oddly, I had seen it a second time even before I knew that we were going to be making a show. It did captivate me.

How did you both prepare for your roles?

POSEY I read the book Written in Blood [by Diane Fanning], and Antonio sent me autopsy Xerox copies of all the blood and guts, and I kept it at a distance. I just kept listening to Freda’s voice and her accent and got to watch her on Court TV. And that’s when I heard that Michael Stuhlbarg, who’s been a favorite actor of mine since [Martin McDonagh’s play] The Pillowman , was in touch with David Rudolph, the real guy! I was like, “Oh my God, that’s amazing, he can tell me about Freda.” I’ve had a few phone calls with Candy, Freda’s friend. There’s this whole other side of her that wasn’t in the script. What happened with this, as we know, took a toll on her. [I knew] I had to really honor this woman. It was like being haunted by her.

STUHLBARG I had barely agreed to the idea of speaking with David — Antonio sent me a message and said, “Here, you guys meet.” As you said, Parker, you jump in, ready or not. In the past, when I’ve had the opportunity to meet real people that I would be playing, you have to ask forgiveness of them initially and say, “This process of getting to know each other is limited, so please forgive me if I ask a lot of stupid questions.” I flew to Charlotte and I spent a whole day with him. He made himself available to everybody if they wanted to speak about anything. Sometimes you’ll play someone who is living and you’ll have no material to get to know who they are. In this instance, there was more footage than you could ever sit through. In fact, I was completely unaware of the Court TV footage until Parker mentioned it to me, and my head exploded. At that time, this was the longest court trial in North Carolina history, over three months. There was so much information to sift through. I would just listen to David’s voice over and over again and just sort through it.

Antonio gave us this massive stack, two huge envelopes, with autopsy photos and all the papers that the defense would have had during the trial and left it to us to either look at them or not. I waited a couple of days as well, because it freaked me out. I didn’t really want to look at it much after that initial time. As Parker was excessively conscientious about wanting to honor the memory of Freda, David had only one thing that he [asked of me], which was that the portrayal of the criminal defense lawyer be as conscientious about what it is that they do — in other words, not to portray them in a manner that would be denigrating to those who practice criminal defense law, because he feels the media has been abusive to the profession as a whole.

POSEY Michael, I don’t know if I told you this or David told you, [but] the first thing that I told David was, “You should be so excited. Michael Stuhlbarg is playing you. You’ve got a real actor’s actor.”

STUHLBARG If Freda were around, she would be absolutely thrilled to have had you play her. You were extraordinary. It was a wonderful pairing of an individual to a role.

POSEY I feel the same about you. And Michael was so supportive. All of our scenes in the DA’s office, we shot in four 17-hour days. When Cullen Moss, who played [fellow prosecutor Jim Hardin], saw me as Freda, he had tears in his eyes. We just loved the charm and the brutality of being able to portray this kind of exhaustion and darkness in their friendship. I haven’t had that kind of friendship acting with someone in a long time. So by the time we got to the courtroom scenes — we shot those in five days — I was a bit nervous when I had to do things alone. But then there was one day when I had to go all out and shame Michael Peterson in public, and Freda’s closing statement was like a one-woman show. It was 45 minutes long. I remember looking over at Michael and he just looked at me and he gave me a thumbs up, and it just meant so much.

STUHLBARG You didn’t need any help, though. It was so much fun to watch you and Cullen be one amoeba. The two of you were just working together in such a beautiful manner. I have rarely seen two people just absorb so much about each other so well and so thoroughly, and you were both so perfect for those parts.

What was the most challenging scene?

STUHLBARG It’s funny because with what I remember David saying about how he practices his profession, when he’s in it, he’s in it, and when he’s not, he’s not. He drew a very distinct line between honoring his clients and also separating from them. Because of circumstances, COVID and all of that, we didn’t get the opportunity to socialize as much as we would like to, because we were all somewhat quarantining. Antonio did have these get-togethers periodically, where we could check in with each other and have meals together. Those were an absolute delight.

But to answer your question, the first thing that popped to my mind was watching Cullen suddenly improvise during some of the trial sequences. He knew his character so well, I found that he started to elaborate on some of the issues that Jim Hardin would have elaborated on during his closing statements. I felt this heat coming up in me, this competition being on the opposing counsel. It was odd because it was as if I were David watching the rival counsel showboat and elaborate much further than he was supposed to. “What the hell am I going to do? I have to meet that challenge.” And that doesn’t happen too often. I dug deep and I found something else, which didn’t make it into the [series], but that doesn’t matter. In getting to know David in the short amount of time that I got to speak with him and ask questions of him, I felt a great responsibility to honor what he asked of me and also to take all that information that we were given — which there was too much — and to try to make it my own. I found it very lonely, this job, trying to do what he did.

'The Staircase': Michael Stuhlbarg on Working With Colin Firth and Meeting the Real Man He Portrayed

He also discusses what gets him excited about working on a project.

From creator Antonio Campos and inspired by a true story, the HBO Max original limited series The Staircase tells the story of Michael Peterson ( Colin Firth ), who was accused of killing his wife Kathleen ( Toni Collette ) after she was found dead at the bottom of their staircase. The suspicious circumstances, along with secrets that start to unravel, create a stranger-than-fiction vibe that makes you wonder just how accidental this tragedy truly is.

During this 1-on-1 interview with Collider, Michael Stuhlbarg (who plays David Rudolf, Michael Peterson’s lawyer) talked about why he wanted to be a part of telling this story, playing someone who’s just a normal guy that’s good at his job, getting to meet the real person he was playing, working with a leader like Firth, whether he’s ever affected by the characters that he plays, and what gets him excited about a project.

Collider: This is such a fascinating and bizarre story. When this project came your way, what made you want to be a part of telling it? What ultimately most spoke to you about this story?

MICHAEL STUHLBARG: I had seen the documentary before, and I had also worked with Antonio Campos before, and some of the other actors, like Toni Collette and Odessa Young. The opportunity to work with all of them again was wonderful, as well as the script itself and the character. Watching how David comported himself, during the course of the trial and during the course of the entire documentary, to have the chance to walk in his shoes for a while was a wonderful opportunity.

RELATED: How to Watch 'The Staircase': Where is the True Crime Drama Streaming?

He’s a guy who seems like a good guy. And he’s a lawyer who seems like a good lawyer. He’s just stuck with this client who he’s trying to do his best with. What is it like to play and explore someone like that? How did you view him? How did you approach understanding him, when he feels like he could be anybody that you know?

STUHLBARG: Yeah, that’s the great thing about him, both watching him, and then I got to meet him and hang out with him for a while. He basically was an open book. What you saw is what you get. He believed Michael, from the very beginning. He told me everything about his own life that led him to those circumstances, and then everything that went on with him afterwards. I believed him from the get-go. I enjoyed the time we spent together, and I enjoyed watching him and trying to figure out the best way to go about doing these things. He’s really good at his job, and he’s got a great sense of humor. It was really fun.

Are there challenges that come with playing just a normal, straightforward guy?

STUHLBARG: It’s funny because, even though someone might seem that way, they aren’t those things. We all are human, so there’s always something that will surprise you about someone. Although David does shoot from the hip. What the series offers is a glimpse behind everyone’s mask that they wear. You get to learn about people that you didn’t necessarily get to learn about, if you had seen the documentary. It explores everyone’s life, during the course of the circumstances of the trial. What may seem straightforward actually takes a lot of time and effort. David has honed his professional self, as well as his personal self, over the course of many years. He is a particular way in the world. So, I tried to absorb as much as I could about him. He’s our eyes and ears, in watching the events take place during the course of not just the documentary, but in our story as well. Although we are privy to learning a little bit about everyone during our story.

When you meet with someone like him, and you know that you’re going to be playing him, do you study him for the way he behaves in his mannerisms, or do you not find that, so necessary with something like this?

STUHLBARG: It’s something that one is drawn to want to do because you want to do your job well, but under this circumstance, there’s a lot of footage out there of David. I could watch him through the entire documentary and not even necessarily need to meet him, but I had the opportunity to, so I took it. I loved hearing his answers to questions that I’m sure he’s answered a million times before. It was great.

The real David has said that he believes and has always believed that Michael is innocent. Did you feel that you had to believe that? Is that something you even thought about? How did you work that out for yourself?

STUHLBARG: I didn’t feel like I had to believe the same things he did, but I inevitably did because the facts were just one thing. The facts were the facts. As they were presented, that’s what I grew to believe as well. Now, if you ask the same question to the actors who were on the prosecution side of this case, they will say that they believed what their characters were going through as well. I think perspective is an interesting aspect of this whole project, in that there are several different and new perspectives that our version of this story allows for, where the documentary only presents one.

Having seen the documentary, and then having had the experience of making this series, did it change your perspective on Michael Peterson at all?

STUHLBARG: Mostly, my opinions are still the same, from what I gleaned from the documentary. I’d like to believe what people say, but that’s part of my nature. In the end, people will try to put their best foot forward, I suppose. I’m not sure if I learned a whole lot about Michael, so I don’t feel like my perspective changed so much about who he is. I took what I was privy to, and I made my decisions based on what I had seen, so not a lot changed for me.

What was it like to work with Colin Firth and to have him as a scene partner, playing that dynamic?

STUHLBARG: Colin is a leader by example. His work is so smart, and away from the work, he’s so pleasant to be around. He’s a generous and gentle spirit, and so funny. It makes all the difference in the world, to enjoy the people that you work with, just for who they are, and to watch how they work and how they go about trying to find a way into who it is that they’re playing. That can be inspirational, in terms of your own work. Certainly, Colin provided that inspiration, every time we had the chance to be together.

The last thing that I saw you in was Dopesick , and that is such a different character than this one. Do you get affected by the characters that you play? When you play someone like Richard Sackler, who really is responsible for the destruction of so many lives, does it get under your skin? Can you avoid that from happening?

STUHLBARG: Depends on you, as an individual. It depends on how long the shooting process is, and to what you are privy to, with the information out there about somebody, and also the script that you’re working with. Inevitably, if you live in that world, and you’re trying to portray someone as honestly and as non-judgmentally as possible, it’s most likely gonna stick with you a little bit because it’s a significant amount of time living with someone or as someone. I just try to take the facts and honor what I learn, as much as possible, and try to be without an agenda, given all the circumstances. It’s really hard to judge a character that you’re playing while you’re playing them. You’re gonna feel a particular way, most of the time. It’s always a marriage between the individual and yourself.

You’ve played characters that are all over the map. What typically gets you excited and interested in a project? Is it who you’re working with?

STUHLBARG: Always, sure, it’s who I’m working with and the material itself. If it moves me, if it makes me laugh, if it captures my imagination, if it’s challenging, if it’s something I’ve never done before, if it’s something that scares me, all of those things go into the mix. I’m always trying to look for something I’ve not done before and something that is terrifying to do, just to se where it is I end up meeting the material and what I’m capable of. You don’t know unless you’re challenged, really.

The Staircase is available to stream at HBO Max.

Michael Stuhlbarg Is Attacked in Central Park Before ‘Patriots’ Debut

The actor was walking on the Upper East Side on Sunday when a man threw a rock at him, the police said. On Monday evening he appeared on Broadway in the first preview of the play “Patriots.”

A day after he was struck with a rock in a random attack on the Upper East Side, the actor Michael Stuhlbarg appeared Monday evening in the first preview of the Broadway play “Patriots,” in which he stars as a Russian oligarch who helped facilitate Vladimir V. Putin’s rise.

Stuhlbarg, best known for his role as a gangster in the series “Boardwalk Empire,” was walking in Central Park on Sunday evening when a man threw a rock, hitting him in the back of the neck, the police said.

Stuhlbarg chased the man, Xavier Israel, 27, out of the park, where he was taken into custody and charged with assault. The location where the man was arrested on East 91st Street is the address for the Russian consulate.

The police said Stuhlbarg declined medical attention.

Stuhlbarg — who the show said in a news release was feeling “fine” — appeared onstage Monday for his debut in “Patriots.” He plays Boris A. Berezovsky , a Russian business tycoon who reigned in post-Soviet Russia and helped install Putin as president, but then had a bitter falling out with the Kremlin and died in exile .

The play, written by Peter Morgan, the creator of the British royalty drama “The Crown,” and directed by Rupert Goold, opens on April 22. It was first staged in 2022 in London , where Tom Hollander played Berezovsky.

Stuhlbarg, 55, had his breakthrough lead performance in the Coen brothers film “A Serious Man,” going on to numerous onscreen roles, including as Dr. Richard Sackler, the prescription opioid magnate, in the limited series “Dopesick,” for which he was nominated for an Emmy.

A fixture of New York’s theater scene in the 1990s and early 2000s, Stuhlbarg last appeared on Broadway in 2005, when he received a Tony nomination for starring in Martin McDonagh’s “ The Pillowman .”

At the end of the performance the audience at the Ethel Barrymore gave Stuhlbarg a standing ovation when he came out, smiling, for his bow.

‘Your Honor’ Star Michael Stuhlbarg Assaulted with a Rock in New York City

Michael Stuhlbarg on the red carpet

Michael Stuhlbarg , the actor best known for his roles in Boardwalk Empire and Your Honor , was attacked in New York City on Sunday, March 31, according to police.

As reported by Page Six , Stuhlbarg was jogging along East 90th and East Drive around 7:45 p.m. on Sunday when he was assaulted by a homeless man, later identified as Xavier Isreal. Police told the publication that Israel struck the actor in the back of the neck with a rock, causing an abrasion.

The Dopesick star pursued Israel on foot to the front of the Russian Consulate, where the attacker was apprehended by NYPD units from a critical response command.

Israel, who has three prior arrests from January 2022 for assault and robbery, was taken into custody without incident and charged with the assault. Stuhlbarg declined medical attention.

Stuhlbarg is perhaps best known for portraying real-life gangster Arnold Rothstein in the HBO drama Boardwalk Empire , in which he starred from 2010 to 2013. He also played Sy Feltz in the third season of FX’s anthology drama Fargo and Jimmy Baxter on Showtime’s Your Honor.

In 2022, he earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his role as Richard Sackler in Hulu’s opioid drama Dopesick .

More recently, he appeared in the Max biographical crime drama The Staircase , portraying the lawyer David Rudolf.

The attack comes just a week after former Real Housewives of New York star Bethenny Frankel revealed she was randomly punched on a New York City street last year. Frankel’s assault was believed to be part of a “viral” TikTok trend in which unsuspecting women are hit in the face while filming videos around the city.

On Wednesday, March 27, the NYPD arrested a man who was supposedly involved in at least one of the attacks.

“The NYPD is aware of a viral video circulating on social media depicting a woman who was randomly assaulted in an unprovoked attack,” the NYPD posted on its official X account. “The individual has been arrested and charged and is a criminal recidivist with an extensive criminal record.”

“Your officers will continue to remain resilient in their efforts to stop violent criminals, ensuring the safety of our communities,” the statement continued.

Veteran producer Simon Kinberg , who oversaw most of the “X-Men” movies for 20th Century Fox, is in talks to produce an upcoming “ Star Trek ” movie for Paramount Pictures, Variety has confirmed.

The project has already been in development at the studio for some time, with Seth Grahame-Smith (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) handing the screenplay and Toby Haynes (“Andor,” “Black Mirror: USS Callister”) on board to direct. Insiders say the film is intended as an origin story for the main timeline of the “Star Trek” franchise (rather than the alternate, Kelvin timeline started with 2009’s “Star Trek”), set in the aftermath of humanity’s first contact with aliens.

The “Star Trek” prequel will also be produced by J.J. Abrams, who has overseen all “Star Trek” movies through Bad Robot since 2009’s “Star Trek,” which he directed. Abrams is also producing a separate “Star Trek” film intended to be the final mission of the Kelvin timeline cast, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldaña. Steve Yockey (“The Flight Attendant”) is writing the newest draft of that script.
