What Made George Washington Great?
FREE EVENT, NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED
Thursday, February 15, 7:00 PM
Todd DePastino, Executive Director of the Veteran’s Breakfast Club, will talk broadly about our greatest and mostindispensable Founder, George Washington. It’s not easy to talk about Washington. He didn’t like his private life to be revealed, and he preferred to be remembered as the white marble “Father of the Country,” the man on the dollar bill. But Washington was as fascinating as the other Founders and, unlike the others, his greatness relied not on special talents or abilities, but rather his character.
Discovering a Family History: From the Famous and Heroic to the Infamous and Notorious
Thursday Nov 9, 2023, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM
Mt. Lebanon Library Meeting Room A (16 Castle Shannon Blvd. Pittsburgh PA 15228)
About 15 years ago, Carleton Young was clearing out his parents’ attic in Pittsburgh and was surprised to discover an enormous collection of letters written by two brothers during the Civil War. He then spent more than a decade visiting battle- fields and researching the two soldiers.
In order to find his family connection to the two soldiers, he later began an extensive research of his own family history. Through that process, he was surprised to discover that he was related to many famous people in American history. He also found that along with the famous and heroic, there were family connections to a few infamous rogues and murderers as well. He has now created a program entitled “Discovering a Family History: From the Famous and Heroic to the Infamous and Notorious.

Victorian Mount Hope Mansion
Mount Hope Mansion in Lancaster County was built in 1800 as a grand rural retreat for four continuous generations of the wealthy colonial American ironmaster Grubb family. Renovated and enlarged at the height of the Victorian Era, it is a simply delightful estate, particularly during the holiday season when she is dressed in her holiday finery. Please Note: The mansion is set for the annual interactive dinner theater performance of Holidays at Mount Hope.
Decorating the Victorian Mansion
In a multiple day decorating extravaganza, Mount Hope Mansion is transformed inside and out into a seasonal wonderland. Beginning with the wreath hung over the golden knocker on the front door and throughout the first floor, the decorations echo the classic elegance and colorful sophistication of the Victorian era. Boughs of evergreens topped with velvet ribbons are strung from floor to ceiling and throughout the halls. Gigantic Victorian displays adorn the many mantles, while glowing candles twinkle in every window and throughout the outside grounds surrounding the Mansion. Opulent Christmas trees, the largest of which stands at an impressive 15 feet, are bedecked with the theme "L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz. " A special thanks to Carrie Emich-Wallace and her helpers—Judy and Shane for the 100+ hours they dedicated to the Holiday decorations we enjoy this season! Come together with family and friends for merrymaking and good cheer during the annual Open House at Mount Hope Estate & Winery. The historic Mount Hope Mansion is filled with unique architectural and design elements that reflect both the Federal and Victorian influences. Visit during the Open House and explore the mansion and surrounding area to take a closer look at these unique features!

Historical Society exhibit looks at how Mt. Lebanon was formed
Jul 23, 2023 by brad hundt staff writer [email protected] 2 min read.
John Conti, left, and Geoffrey Hurd, of the Historical Society of Mt. Lebanon, walk through the exhibit, "Shaping Mt. Lebanon: Why Our Town Looks the Way It Does."
"Shaping Mt. Lebanon: Why Our Town Looks the Way It Does," includes a reproduction of how a living room might have looked in one of the community's homes 100 years ago.
Relics from the 1920s and 1930s are included in the exhibit, "Shaping Mt. Lebanon: Why Our Town Looks the Way It Does."
MT. LEBANON – Most of the time, we don’t really give much thought to how our communities came to be.
The streets are the way they are. The homes are the way they are. We just traverse the streets as we carry on our daily lives and inhabit our abodes.
But an exhibit being presented by the Historical Society of Mt. Lebanon, “Shaping Mt. Lebanon: Why Our Town Looks the Way It Does,” explores how Mt. Lebanon was formed more than a century ago. Incorporated in 1912 at what was then the far reaches of the Pittsburgh metro area, it was, in the words of curator John Conti, “a premier example of an early automobile suburb.”
It was one of several turning up around the country at the time. Once a corner of Scott Township, Conti explained that Mt. Lebanon really began to grow — and take on its distinctive character — as a result of the automobile generally, and the opening of the Liberty Tunnels in 1924 specifically. In 1912, there were just six automobiles registered in Mt. Lebanon; by 1934, there were close to 4,000. Parts of the community were built with the automobile in mind, such as curving streets. Parts of Mt. Lebanon were modeled on the Kansas City, Kan., suburb Mission Hills — in fact, a neighborhood in Mt. Lebanon was given that name.
“The streets were designed to conform to the land,” Conti said. “The auto made it possible to have long streets. … They followed the contours of the land.”
The community became a refuge for affluent families who wanted to keep the grime, soot and crowds of Pittsburgh at a remove. Conti explained, while walking through the exhibit, “People who moved out here tended to have money.”
“Shaping Mt. Lebanon” also looks at the architectural styles of some of the century-old houses in Mt. Lebanon and how the design of the community drew inspiration from designs that took root in England and Germany in the 19th century, and how those ideas were imported to America.

Tour shows off splendors of Mt. Lebanon neighborhood
The third annual Symphony Splendor Holiday Home Tour will feature eight “swell-egant manses” in the Virginia Manor neighborhood of Mt. Lebanon.
“Seven of these homes haven't been opened to the public before,” says Jean Horne, director of marketing and public relations for the Nov. 20 tour. “These homeowners love to decorate for Christmas, and they are going all out.”
“Our theme is ‘Hearth and Home,' ” says tour founder and 2016 co-chair Millie Ryan. “I know it sounds trite, but there's no place like home for the holidays.”
The walking tour also will feature symphony musicians, playing solo or in ensembles of up to three members, in each home.
When Virginia Manor was developed, property deeds required that homes be designed by a private architect and that designs be approved by architect Thomas Benner Garman to uphold Garman's vision of a neighborhood that would age gracefully in harmony with the natural surroundings.
Garman studied architecture at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) and opened a Pittsburgh office in 1927. He is best known for his eclectic revival designs in Virginia Manor and in Mt. Lebanon's Mission Hills development.
The first home in Virginia Manor, in the northwestern-most area of Mt. Lebanon, was built in 1931 in the English Cotswold style. Dwellings vary from small cottages to large, formal houses.
“The goal was to have not only a beautiful home, but a livable home, one where there was love and life going on,” Ryan says. “Not only will tourgoers be able to see the beautiful art or a dining room table set with fine china, they'll be able to imagine the family gathering around that table for dinner. You can feel the warmth in these homes.”
“With two exceptions, the tour homes were all designed by Garman,” Horne says. Included are stone Colonials, a stone Cape Cod, three large stone Tudor revivals and a Cotswold cottage.
One of the featured Garman-designed Tudor revivals was built from 1938 to 1940 with sandstone walls and red mortar, half-timbering, leaded diamond-paned windows and a red clay-tiled roof.
In the two-story entry will be a tree that the homeowner says pays homage to the symphony with ornaments in the shape of string and wind instruments.
The interior contains a mix of design features including Colonial wainscoting and turned spindles on the stairs, a red French Lacanche range in the kitchen and an English country house-style family room, decorated in a hunt theme and tartan plaids.
Tourgoers will find the dining room decked in black, gold and dark red around a table set with Herend china and St. Louis crystal for a dinner party of eight.
Although visitors can find street parking in Virginia Manor, Horne says, free parking and free shuttle transportation on Molly's Trolleys will be available in the lot across from 100 Roessler Road, Scott.

Mount Gretna style and architecture will be on display for the annual walking tour of the community’s iconic homes.
The self-guided tour runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, and features 10 homes in the scenic Mount Gretna community.
“You will see everything from tiny weekend getaway cottages to modern year-round homes,” according to a press release from Mika Cook Rymshaw, community development specialist for Gretna Music.
“Featured on the tour this year are Campmeeting and Chautauqua homes built as early as the late 1800s through the 1930s,” the release says. “Some of the houses overlook the beautiful Conewago Lake while others can hear the sounds of live music from Gretna’s two music venues, the Tabernacle and Mount Gretna Playhouse. Each home has its unique charm!”
Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 on the day of the tour, and $5 for children 12 and under. Tickets are available by calling Gretna Music at 717-361-1508, ordering online at gretnamusic.org , or in person at the Mount Gretna Visitor Information Center and all Stauffer’s of Kissel Hill locations. On the day of the tour, tickets will be sold outside the Mount Gretna Post Office on Princeton Avenue and in front of the Mount Gretna Playhouse at 200 Pennsylvania Ave.
