  • INVOICE REQUEST

The two most common reasons why CTO can't issue a ticket are:

(1) GTC is declined. In this case, you would have received a message from the CTO. Please check your DTS reservation for messages and contact the Credit Card vendor to re-activate your credit card.

(2) Your reservation is not approved by your AO. In this case, contact your AO for immediate approval.

Go to MYTRIPANDMORE and view the EXPENSE tab for your ticket receipt. Please note, an itinerary is not a ticket, it is reservation information only . The EXPENSE tab WITH THE TICKET NUMBER will show if a ticket has been issued for your itinerary. You will normally receive your ticketed itinerary invoice TWO (2) to THREE (3) BUSINESS DAYS PRIOR TO DEPARTURE.

· If you have your WingGate Record Locator Number, you can go to MYTRIPANDMORE and the Record Locator Number and Last Name. You can use the information on the Expense Tab for reconciliation.

· If you don't have your Worldspan Record Locator Number, you can go to PAST INVOICE REQUEST . Please enter the First name, Last name, your WingGate GTS base & approximate travel date

Another way to calculate the cost for current fiscal year city pair contract fares and per diems, etc, can be found at ( www.cpsearch.fas.gsa.gov ).

You can go to our CONTACT US page and select "Submit Travel Orders" in the Request Type field.

(1) CTO didn't receive Travel Authorization to ticket.

(2) AO didn't approve your DTS reservations.

(3) Traveler's GTC is declined.

(4) Travelers didn't check CTO message(s) within DTS or email for information needed to issue a ticket.

Most non-GOV fares require instant ticketing and the fare is not guaranteed until the time of ticketing. If any segment(s) of your reservation are booked as non-GOV fares, the restrictions and penalties will be communicated to you in the REMARKS SECTION within traditional reservations and DTS messages sent to DTS users via comments by the CTO by using a 5.E- format. If you have received a message from CTO informing you that early ticketing is required, you need to contact your AO for authorization of early ticketing. Then your AO should contact the CTO authorizing an early ticketing.

If your credit card issue can't be resolved within a couple of hours, please contact your AO or TMO to determine whether you can use the Base CBA (Centrally Billed Account). If the credit card needs to be changed to CBA from your GTC, please request your TMO to contact the CTO for authorization.

· Go to airline's website 24 hours prior to departure and change seats.

· Call the airline directly and explain the situation and see whether the airline will accommodate your needs without charging for seats. Be sure to explain that you are an active duty military personnel and/or traveling with small children.

· Talk to a Gate Agent to see whether they can accommodate your needs.

· As a last resort, flight attendants will ask passengers to accommodate your needs once your family is on board. Most passengers are very understanding and will be happy to accommodate your family's need.

Of course, you can always pre-purchase seats as soon as tickets have been issued.

· You can pre-purchase seats by accessing the airline's website after ticketing. As you probably know, most carriers allow passengers to reserve seats at a premium.

· If you don't wish to pay extra to purchase seats, you can change seats by accessing the airline's website 24 hours prior to departure and/or at airport when checking in.

Ratings and Reviews

Had doubts, but it’s actually decent.

I had doubts after reading all the negative reviews, but this service is actually not that bad. You will want to *call*, not message, the customer service to get in touch with someone. But they are actually pretty helpful. That’s why I’m giving 5 stars. *That said*, keep in mind that the main thing you are typically paying for with this service is a form of insurance in case you miss a connecting flight. They offer cheap prices because you are usually taking flights on multiple, different airlines. Then you pay a premium in case one of those flights gets delayed and you miss a connecting flight. If you are not interested in the insurance, you can book the separate flights yourself without paying the premium.
I booked a flight with 2-3 layovers despite all the horrible horrible reviews, and luckily had ZERO issues!!! I was able to visit my family over Thanksgiving on a crazy cheap ticket~ Was worried we wouldn’t even be able to check in at all LOL but everything was totally normal & we made every flight without delays. Kinda a miracle. Not sure I’d use this company again, but writing this so people know IT DOES WORK.

DO NOT USE!!!! HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE

I booked a trip through this site. I accidentally booked the wrong dates (not their fault) however I specifically payed extra to be able to change my flight free of cost. I realized my mistake, and went to change my flight. There is no way to do this on the website. I waited an hour for them to pick up on the single customer service line, just for them to tell me there was nothing they could do and I had to call the airline. I call the airline and cancel through them. I check my mytrips two weeks later and I haven’t gotten my money back and my trip has not been canceled with them. I call again. They tell me they can’t cancel it again and to call the airline. I tell them I already have and so then they say they can cancel it but only for a 45$ fee because the 35$ I already paid for changes doesn’t cover cancellations. Plus non refundable taxes. Save yourself time and money and PLEASE do not use this site. Such a nightmare. Would give 0 stars if possible.

My First Trip to Norway, With A.I. as a Guide

Can artificial intelligence devise a bucket-list vacation that checks all the boxes: culture, nature, hotels and transportation? Our reporter put three virtual assistants to the test.

A train rolls past a small, quaint red wooden building with a quiet road in front of it. In the distance are trees and snow-capped mountains.

By Ceylan Yeğinsu

The assignment was clear: Test how well artificial intelligence could plan a trip to Norway, a place I’d never been. So I did none of my usual obsessive online research and instead asked three A.I. planners to create a four-day itinerary. None of them, alas, mentioned the saunas or the salmon.

Two assistants were, however, eager to learn more about me in order to tailor their initially generic recommendations, which they had spewed out within seconds. Vacay , a personalized travel planning tool, presented me with a list of questions, while Mindtrip , a new A.I. travel assistant, invited me to take a quiz. (ChatGPT, the third assistant, asked nothing.)

Vacay’s and Mindtrip’s questions were similar: Are you traveling solo? What’s your budget? Do you prefer hotels or Airbnbs? Would you rather explore the great outdoors or pursue a cultural experience?

Eventually, my chat sessions yielded what seemed like well-rounded itineraries, starting with one day in Oslo and moving on to the fjord region. Eventually, I locked down a trip that would combine the assistants’ information and go beyond a predictable list of sites.

This time around, my virtual planners were far more sophisticated than the simple ChatGPT interface I used last year on a trip to Milan. Though it offered more detailed suggestions for Norway, I ended up ditching ChatGPT in the travel-planning stage after it repeatedly crashed.

Vacay’s premium service, which starts at $9.99 per month, included in-depth suggestions and booking links, while Mindtrip, which is currently free, provided photos, Google reviews and maps. During the trip itself, each delivered instantaneous information by text and always asked if more specific details were needed. Sadly, only ChatGPT offered a phone app, whose information I found to be outdated (the $20-per-month premium version is more current).

I’m not alone when it comes to turning to A.I. for help: Around 70 percent of Americans are either using or planning to use A.I. for travel planning, according to a recent survey conducted by the Harris Poll on behalf of the personal finance app Moneylion, while 71 percent said using A.I. would most likely be easier than planning trips on one’s own.

I decided to find out for myself in Norway.

A whirlwind day in Oslo

After I landed at Oslo Airport, all three assistants directed me to the Flytoget Airport Express Train , which got me to town in 20 minutes. I was delighted to find my hotel adjacent to the central railway station.

Choosing accommodations had not been easy. I was looking for a midrange boutique hotel, and the A.I. assistants generated many options with little overlap. I went with Hotel Amerikalinjen , Vacay’s recommendation, which it described as “a vibrant and unique boutique hotel in the heart of Oslo.” Its location was the main draw, but overall the hotel exceeded my expectations, blending comfort and style with the 20th-century charm of its building, which once housed the headquarters of the Norwegian America Line shipping company.

For the one-day Oslo itinerary, the assistants were in agreement, packing in the city’s top sights, including the Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Royal Palace , the Nobel Peace Center, Akershus Fortress and the Munch Museum. I shared my location and asked each assistant to restructure the itineraries to start from my hotel. But when I gave in to my own research instincts and pulled up Google Maps, I saw that the order they suggested didn’t make sense, so I plotted my own path.

By the time I got to Frogner Park at midday, I had already covered half of the sights, and after walking past more than 200 sculptures by the Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland, I was happy to sit down and admire his granite monolith of entwined humans.

For lunch, the assistants recommended high-end restaurants in the bustling waterfront neighborhood of Aker Brygge . But I wanted a quick bite in a more relaxed atmosphere, so I ditched A.I. and walked to the end of the promenade, where I stumbled upon the Salmon , a cozy establishment where I started with salmon sashimi that melted in my mouth and finished with a perfectly grilled fillet. How had my assistants not mentioned this place?

Next on my list was the Nobel Peace Center, the Opera House and the Munch Museum. The assistants had not recommended prebooking tickets, but fortunately, I had done so, learning, in the process, that the Peace Center was closed, a crucial bit of information that A.I. did not relay.

It was chilly for mid-June, and as I walked along the harbor promenade toward the Munch Museum, I spotted small floating saunas, which my assistants had not included. I went back to the ChatGPT phone app for recommendations. Even though I was eager to try a floating sauna, where people warmed themselves and then plunged straight into the frigid waters of the Oslofjord, I took ChatGPT’s suggestion and booked the Salt sauna, which is where I headed after spending a few hours at the Munch Museum, with its extensive works by the Norwegian artist and its sweeping views of Oslo’s harbor.

At the Salt cultural complex , a large pyramidal structure on the water, I was relieved that swimsuits were a requirement. In Scandinavia, saunas are usually taken naked , and earlier, I had asked ChatGPT for the etiquette at Salt, but it failed to give me a definitive answer. After sweating it out with around 30 strangers in Salt’s main sauna, I dipped into a cold-water barrel tub and then tried the smaller sauna options, which were hotter and quieter. It was the perfect ending to a long day.

Waterfalls, lush valleys, raging waters

my trip and more

Each of my assistants had different ideas on how to reach the fjord region. ChatGPT suggested taking a seven-hour train ride and then immediately embarking on a two-hour fjord cruise, which sounded exhausting. Mindtrip suggested taking a short flight to Bergen, known as the “gateway to the fjords,” and setting out on a cruise the next day, which was perhaps more efficient, but would also mean missing one of the most scenic train rides in the world. Vacay also recommended a train ride.

After conversing with the assistants, I decided on a shorter train journey (six hours) that would deliver me to Naeroyfjord , a UNESCO World Heritage site with lush valleys and thundering waterfalls. But to figure out the logistics for transport and accommodation, I needed live train timetables, which I found on my own, and information on hotel availability that none of the assistants had.

At this point, I was desperate for human guidance to navigate the region’s expensive and limited accommodations. This is where the pictures and reviews on Mindtrip were useful, helping me to understand that I would be paying premium prices for the spectacular setting of a mediocre hotel.

The train ride from Oslo to Myrdal was breathtaking: rolling hills, mountain villages, fjords, waterfalls. But nothing prepared me for the majestic one-hour Flam railway ride that followed. Vacay had described it as an “engineering marvel” with a breathtakingly steep descent as it passes picturesque villages, dramatic mountains, raging rivers and pounding waterfalls, complete with a dance performance featuring a mythological spirit known as a huldra.

The next morning I boarded a Naeroyfjord cruise, recommended by Vacay, on an electric, 400-person vessel. I was surprised by the serenity of the fjord. Later I learned from a tour guide that I had been lucky to visit when there were no large cruise ships. It was hard to imagine an ocean liner maneuvering through the narrow, windy fjord, but when I asked ChatGPT, it told me 150 to 220 cruise ships squeezed through the fjord each year, a detail that I felt the travel assistants should warn travelers about.

The cruise ended in the village of Gudvangen, where rain made me cancel a hike to a waterfall and instead try my hand at ax-throwing in the Viking Village Njardarheim. The assistants had told me that there were buses that left town every four hours, a time frame that had worked with my original hiking plan, but now I was stuck. Thankfully, I took note of the A.I. disclaimers to check all information and found an alternative shuttle bus.

On my way to Bergen, I decided to stop in the town of Voss, famous for extreme sports like skydiving and spectacular nature. All the A.I.-suggested hotels were booked, but a Google search led me to the lakeside Elva hotel , which had delicious farm-to-table food. I suspect it didn’t make the A.I. shortlist because it was new.

I ended my trip in Bergen, which, despite being Norway’s second-largest city, maintains a small-town charm with its colorful wooden houses and cobblestone streets. With only half a day to explore, I followed Mindtrip’s short itinerary, starting with a hearty lunch of fish and chips at the bustling waterfront fish market and ending with a funicular ride up Mount Floyen for panoramic views of the city and fjords. The A.I. dinner suggestion at the Colonialen was perfect: cozy vibe, live jazz and locally sourced dishes.

The bottom line

None of the A.I. programs were perfect, but they did complement one another, allowing me to streamline my travel decisions.

Overall, Mindtrip — with its polished, dynamic interface that allowed me to cross-check details with maps, links and reviews — was my favorite. While it gave some good recommendations, Mindtrip needed more prompting than Vacay, which offered a wider variety of suggestions in more detail. Unfortunately, Vacay doesn’t save chat history, which I discovered halfway into my planning after closing the website’s tab on my browser.

The biggest drawback was the absence of phone apps for Mindtrip and Vacay, which led me to rely on ChatGPT’s basic A.I. assistant when I needed on-the-spot guidance. Mindtrip, I’ve since learned, is planning to debut an app in September.

Still, there were times when I desperately craved the human touch. Before setting out on a trip, I always contact friends and colleagues for recommendations. This time, as part of the A.I. experiment, I refrained from reaching out to a Norwegian friend until after my trip, only to find out that we had both been in Oslo at the same time.

That’s one element of travel that I doubt A.I. will ever master: serendipity.

I rarely visit 7-Eleven in the US, but on a trip to Japan, it became one of my favorite spots

  • Japan is home to more 7-Eleven stores than anywhere else in the world.
  • On a trip to Tokyo and Kyoto, I understood why the convenience store has grown in popularity.
  • It became a daily stop for me. I'd grab cash, pick up sushi, and try Japanese snacks.

Insider Today

There's pretty much only one reason I ever step inside a 7-Eleven in the US, and it's when I'm craving the artificial sweetness of a blue-raspberry Slurpee.

But on a trip to Japan, I found myself inside a 7-Eleven practically every day.

Whether it was to grab cash or scarf down a quick sushi roll, the convenience store has a new place in my heart (and my stomach).

A 7-Eleven in Tokyo, Japan. Monica Humphries/Insider

7-elevens are huge in japan.

According to Sugoi Mart , 7-Eleven is the largest convenience-store chain in Japan. I saw that firsthand. There were rarely times on my trip when I wasn't a five-minute walk to a 7-Eleven. And usually, I had my choice between three or four within walking distance.

According to the Los Angeles Times , there are between 50,000 and 60,000 7-Elevens spread across the country.

The chain's rise to popularity came about for a few reasons. First of all, 7-Elevens are convenient. Japan has a fast-paced lifestyle and long working hours, and since 7-Elevens are open 24/7, it makes it an easy place to grab a quick bite to eat, Sugoi Mart reports.

Related stories

The quality food has also contributed to its popularity, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"The quality is next level," Kaila Imada, a senior editor for Time Out Tokyo, who has written connoisseur's guides to the convenience store, told the Los Angeles Times. "You can find dinner there and it will be a top-notch dinner."

The ice cream options at a 7-Eleven in Tokyo, Japan. Monica Humphries/Insider

I discovered it was a fun place to try japanese snacks and an easy place to take out cash.

The convenience store practically became a daily stop on my 12-day trip to Tokyo and Kyoto.

It was one of the first places I visited when I arrived since 7-Elevens have ATMs where anyone can take out cash. Since Japan still heavily relies on cash , it was almost always easier to find a 7-Eleven than a bank that worked with my debit card.

The stores were both eerily similar and exactly the opposite of the ones I've been to in the US. While the exterior, branding, and store layout were identical, the food was completely different — and that's why I think I was enamored by it so much.

In the mornings, I popped in to try different canned coffees, matcha, and teas. I guzzled bottles of Craft Boss matcha.

In the afternoon, if I wanted a snack between dinner and lunch, I'd grab an  onigiri, which is a Japanese rice ball filled with seafood and covered by seaweed — the perfect walking snack. While the convenience-store sushi didn't compare to the restaurants I visited in the country, it could compete with some of the sushi I eat back home in Denver, Colorado.

At night, I almost always popped into the store to grab some sweets. During the two weeks of my vacation, I tried a Choco Monaka Jumbo , which is an ice cream surrounded by a crispy wafer and crunchy chocolate shell; I devoured down Crunky Cookie Balls , which are crispy cookies coated in chocolate; and had more than my fair share of Pocky , which are popular biscuit sticks coated in chocolate, strawberry cream, cookies and cream, matcha, or banana cream.

Perhaps the best part was that the snacks were always affordable. I never spent more than a few US dollars on my 7-Eleven stops, so trying the popular snacks quickly became one of my favorite parts of my time in Japan.

Nursery workers forgot boy, 4, at animal park when bus left without him

The Scottish Deer Centre

A mum has spoken about how she felt after her young son was left behind on a nursery trip to a deer park.

Carson Hodge, four, was found crying by a stranger when he realised his friends and teachers from Dunmore Nursery had headed home without him.

He was using the toilet at the Scottish Deer Centre in Fife, Scotland when the nursery bus drove off – they thought he had been hiding from them.

The council-run school is now investigating how three teachers – in charge of 10 children – had managed to lose Carson.

His mum Clare said on Facebook that a park visitor found her son in tears, with workers phoning the nursery while looking after him.

Parents and guardians were told that the bus, due to arrive at 12.30pm, had been delayed. The nursery informed them half an hour later a student was ‘unaccounted’ for.

Clare said: ‘Whilst on their end-of-year trip to the Scottish Deer Centre all the children were asked to go to the toilet before getting on the bus to come home.

‘Carson was the last one to use the toilet and when he came out he couldn’t find anyone and thought they were hiding from him.

‘The reason he couldn’t find them was because they had left him.’

Carson told his mum ‘a man’ found him crying and brought him to the park office.

‘The what ifs that have ran round my head all weekend is unreal,’ she added.

Clare was told by the nursery that teachers failed to do a headcount before heading home.

‘Instead, they asked the wee ones on the bus if everyone was here and they shouted yes so they left,’ she said.

‘They didn’t bother to count them.’

The council which runs the nursery says the care service watchdog has been informed and that officials are investigating the ‘extremely serious’ incident.

Head of service Shelagh McLean told STV News : ‘As soon as the child was noted as missing immediate action was taken.

‘The school was in contact with the child’s parents and the Care Inspectorate was notified immediately.

‘We do have robust guidance and procedures in place for schools and nurseries regarding school trips.

‘As part of this investigation, we will review these policies and procedures to see where any improvements can be made.

‘As there are individuals involved who will be easily identifiable in the local community, even if not directly named, until the full details are clear and official proceedings are finalised, which would include any action taken by Care Inspectorate, we are not in a position to comment further on any specific action that will be taken.’

Top Picks for Mom and Son Vacations: Creating Lasting Memories

E ver since my son was just a little guy navigating the big world of elementary school, we’ve embarked on what’s become our annual tradition – mom and son vacations. Picture this: just the two of us, hitting the open road, ready to dive into whatever adventure awaits, from the scream-worthy roller coasters of Orlando to the laid-back, leafy retreats in the heart of the Midwest.

But here’s the thing – not every destination hits the sweet spot for these special getaways. It’s got to have the right mix of fun, food, and comfy places to crash at the end of the day. Finding that perfect spot? That’s the challenge.

These trips are way more than just a break from our everyday lives; they’re our golden ticket to building a treasure chest of memories. It’s our time to bond, to laugh, to explore – and yes, to feast on some seriously good eats ( thankfully, my son’s a foodie just like me).

So, after years of weekend getaways together, I’ve nailed down a list of places that really cater to the mom-and-son vacation vibe. Each spot we’ve chosen offers that perfect backdrop for creating those unforgettable stories and strengthening our bond.

From the thrill-a-minute parks of Orlando to the serene landscapes that define the Midwest, and every hidden gem in between, I’m excited to share these destinations with you. They’re the ones that have passed our test for fun, food, and coziness, making each trip a chapter in our ongoing adventure together. Get ready to discover places where you and your son can make your own set of memories, just like we have.

1. Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Heading to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, with my son has always been a blast. This place is like a magnet for fun, especially if you’re into go-karts, miniature golf, and heaps of outdoor adventures ( as most teenage boys I know are! ). And if your son likes to hike , it’s a fantastic location!

First up, go-karts. Pigeon Forge is packed with tracks, each one offering a different thrill level. My son and I like to challenge each other to see who could lap the other first, turning each race into a mini-competition. Let’s just say, it’s still up for debate who holds the title of ‘Go-Kart Champion.’ (I claim it’s me!)

Miniature golf is another hit in Pigeon Forge. With courses themed from pirate adventures to rustic gardens, it’s an easy and fun evening activity. As we are competitive by nature, we play to win and keep score every game – he does usually beat me at this one.

And then there’s The Island. This place is a terrific way to spend a few hours, with rides, shops, and places to eat. It’s a place we always visit on our trips to Pigeon Fore, hopping from one attraction to the next, and ending our day watching the fountain show, which, by the way, is pretty cool with all the lights and music .

Is your son really adventurous? Try this highly-rated zipline tour – I guarantee it’s an experience you’ll talk about for years!

2. Orlando, Florida

Orlando is like hitting the jackpot for mom and son trips. This city is the ultimate playground with its world-famous theme parks and endless sunshine. We never get tired of visiting and have enjoyed several long weekends there together.

The theme parks are obviously the big draw. From the magic of Disney World to the thrills of Universal Studios, there’s something for every kind of adventurer. My son and I have visited Disney World just the two of us numerous times and always have a blast eating delicious food in Epcot, riding the rides at the Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, and checking out the animals at Animal Kingdom.

But Orlando isn’t just about the parks. We’ve discovered some gems off the beaten path too, like checking out Winter Park , finding new, local restaurants in Orlando and even just chilling at the pool.

If you decide to go to Disney or Universal, I’ve always had good luck buying my tickets from Undercover Tourist , so check them out!

3. St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis is an underrated gem for mom and son getaways. It’s got this cool mix of history, sports, and outdoor fun that can make any trip memorable. Every time we visit has been a new adventure for us, packed with moments that still pop up in our dinner table conversations.

The City Museum is an absolute must. It’s not your typical museum; it’s more like a giant playground built out of reclaimed architectural and industrial objects. Climbing through airplane fuselages, sliding down enormous slides, and exploring caves together was as much a blast for me as it was for my son. It’s like being in a giant jungle gym, where even the moms can’t help but let their inner kid out.

Then there’s the Gateway Arch , which you just can’t skip. Riding to the top gives you this incredible view of the Mississippi River and the city, making it a perfect selfie spot for us. It’s also pretty cool to stand under it and feel just how massive it is.

Outdoor activities are plentiful in Forest Park , bigger than Central Park in NYC, believe it or not. You can rent a paddleboat, cruise around the Grand Basin, or just take a leisurely walk, soaking in the beauty of the park. And if you’re into science like we are, the St. Louis Science Center is another hit, with its planetarium and interactive exhibits.

If you aren’t familiar with St. Louis, the first thing I’d suggest doing is this trolley tour – it’s a great way to get your bearings and learn a little bit about the city.

4. Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas might not be the first place that comes to mind for a mom and son trip, but trust me, it’s full of surprises beyond the neon lights. The city has plenty of cool stuff to do that doesn’t involve setting foot in a casino, although it was nice letting him see some of the places we’ve talked about as we take a “grown-up” trip to Vegas every year.

First up, the adventure experiences are top-notch. We hit the High Roller Observation Wheel , and let me tell you, seeing Vegas from 550 feet in the air is something else. It’s a great way to kick off the trip, giving you a bird’s-eye view of everything you’ll want to explore on the ground.

And you can’t visit Vegas without catching at least one show. We opted for Michael Jackson One , and it was mind-blowing. The dancing, the music, the storytelling—all of it was on another level. It’s the kind of entertainment that keeps you talking long after the curtain falls.

Las Vegas also serves up some great outdoor adventures not too far from the city. You can take a day trip to Red Rock Canyon for some hiking. It is a welcome break from the buzz of the Strip and a chance to enjoy some quality time together in nature.

My favorite place to stay in Las Vegas with kids is Park MGM . The pools are fantastic and the entire building is non-smoking!

5. Indianapolis, Indiana

I’d be remiss if I didn’t include my family’s hometown of Indianapolis. It is a treasure trove of activities for moms and sons looking for a memorable getaway. This city combines the charm of small-town vibes with the excitement of a bustling metropolis, making it an ideal spot for families looking to explore and have fun together. And, you can’t beat the focus on sports – if your son is a sports fanatic we have a team for you to cheer on!

If your son is in about sixth grade or younger, a trip to Indy wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis , the largest children’s museum in the world. With exhibits ranging from dinosaur fossils in Dinosphere to interactive traveling exhibits, it’s a place where my son and I can easily spend the whole day. In fact, we were members for years and spent many happy Saturdays exploring and playing.

For sports-loving duos, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is a hit. Even if you’re not a racing fan, the history and the thrill of the Indy 500 are contagious. We took a tour of the track, and feeling the vastness of the Speedway was something we both won’t forget. It’s a unique experience that gives you a real sense of the racing world.

The city’s outdoor spaces are another highlight. Walking along the Canal and White River State Park, we found the perfect blend of relaxation and activities. Renting a pedal boat gave us a different perspective of the city and a bit of exercise, too. Plus, the park’s proximity to other attractions, like the Indianapolis Zoo , made it easy to hop from one adventure to the next.

Indianapolis is super affordable, and a fun place to stay with kids is at the Crowne Plaza downtown – you can book an actual train car converted into a hotel room!

6. Tampa/Sarasota, Florida

After several years of soccer tournaments in the Lakewood Ranch area, we’ve discovered what a fantastic spot Tampa and Sarasota are for mom-son vacations. It’s a nice direct flight for us to fly into Tampa from Indy, and from there you can visit Sarasota, Siesta Key , and plenty of other fun places quite easily.

One of our most memorable experiences ( we still talk about how fun it was ) was taking a food tour in Ybor City , Tampa’s historic neighborhood known for its Cuban and Spanish roots. Wandering through the old streets, we savored everything from authentic Cuban sandwiches to decadent coffee con leche, learning about the area’s rich history along the way. It was a perfect experience for both of us – my son loved the food and I loved the history!

Siesta Key, a short drive from Sarasota, became our go-to beach destination. The powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters offered the perfect backdrop for our days in the sun. Building sandcastles, chasing waves, or just lounging around , Siesta Key provided us with those quintessential beach moments and has quickly become one of my favorite beaches in Florida.

And let’s not forget the seafood. Our trips to this area are never complete without indulging in the delicious seafood that the Gulf Coast is famous for. Whether it’s dining on fresh grouper sandwiches by the beach or enjoying a seafood feast at one of Sarasota’s fine eateries, we always search out the local restaurants.

The first year we visited we stayed in Lakewood Ranch near the soccer fields, but last year we based our stay on Siesta Key at the fantastic Sarasota Beach & Racquet Club – it allowed us to enjoy Siesta Key and Sarasota equally!

7. Cincinnati, Ohio

We’ve been heading to Cincinnati for weekend getaways for years thanks to soccer tournaments which we combine with all the fun and educational experiences the city offers. Plus, it’s close to Indy – we can get there in less than two hours. Our very first soccer weekend out of town many years ago was in Cincinnati and my son and I still talk about that weekend as it was also our first mom and son getaway.

One of the places we love to visit if the weather is nice is the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden , one of the oldest zoos in the United States. Another fun experience was a Cincinnati Reds/ Chicago Cubs baseball game – the Reds stadium is right downtown and it was my son’s first time to watch a full game. Plus, you can visit the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame & Museum too which is a treat for any baseball fan.

Finally, we love the great restaurants, shopping, and neighborhoods in the Cincinnati area. For the dozens of times we’ve visited , we’ve never run out of things to do and never been bored!

Want a nice overview of Cincinnati? Check out this highly-rated top sites and food of Cincinnati tour!

8. Peoria, Arizona

Another location we found thanks to a soccer tournament is Peoria, Arizona. It’s a short drive from Phoenix and a fantastic place for a mom and son vacation as there are plenty of terrific “kid-approved” things to do! Although it might not be the first place that pops into your mind when you think of a mom and son trip, it’s a hidden gem waiting to be explored .

Our adventure in Peoria was filled with unexpected discoveries, starting with the Lake Pleasant Regional Park . This vast reservoir is a playground for water enthusiasts, offering everything from boating and fishing to kayaking. It was a little cold on our trip for kayaking, but I would absolutely try it on our next visit if it’s warmer.

One of the fun things we DID do was rent electric bikes and explore the trails around the city. It was so much fun and a wonderful activity for a teenage boy to do with his parents – let’s face it, by the teen years, it’s a bit harder to find experiences you both love doing together.

If you visit Peoria, I highly recommend staying at the Cibola Resort. It is gorgeous and we both loved our accommodations!

9. Chicago, Illinois

One of my favorite mom and son vacations near me is Chicago, Illinois. With its towering skyscrapers and bustling streets, the city offers a dynamic setting for a mom and son weekend getaway that’s both educational and thrilling. Only three hours from Indy, it’s a place we enjoy regularly.

Our trips to the Windy City aren’t complete without a visit to one of the wonderful museums like the Museum of Science and Industry . This museum is a place where science comes alive through hands-on exhibits and captivating displays. From stepping inside a real submarine to experiencing a simulated tornado, it’s a day filled with awe-inspiring discoveries.

Another highlight is Millennium Park , where you can see the famous Cloud Gate sculpture, affectionately known as “The Bean.” Taking silly selfies reflected in its shiny, bean-shaped surface is fun and I love looking back on these pictures to see how my son has grown through the years.

And as foodies, we find Chicago’s food scene to be an adventure all its own. From deep-dish pizza to gourmet hot dogs, every meal is an opportunity to explore the city’s culinary delights. My son, ever the adventurous eater, is always all in on trying everything, making each dining experience a fun exploration of flavors.

If this is your first visit to Chicago (or just want to experience the city in a new way) , consider a Hop On Hop Off bus tour – you’ll get your bearings and it will help you decide what you want to do during your trip!

10. Disneyland/Anaheim, California

As a Disney fanatic, I have to add Disneyland to my list of fantastic places for a mother-son trip idea in the United States. Although we typically go to Disney World, if you are closer to Disneyland (or just want a change of pace) , give it a try.

From the moment we set foot in the park, we were swept up in the magic, greeting beloved characters, and embarking on legendary rides. It was super fun to experience the difference between classics like Pirates of the Caribbean and Space Mountain, as well as try new rides like the ones we encountered in California Adventure.

Disneyland is also a really easy vacation for a mom-and-son trip. You can stay within walking distance of the park, and you never have to worry about what you’ll do together or where you’ll go. And in our family, we consider any Disney vacation “guaranteed fun.”

Anaheim is also home to Knotts Berry Farm if your son prefers roller coasters. I took my daughter there on a mother-daughter trip because she’s a roller coaster fan, but my son would have enjoyed it on one of our trips too (maybe the next one!) .

Get your Disneyland tickets before you go so you don’t have to waste time waiting in line. I purchased ours from Undercover Tourist and it was simple and quick!

11. Boyne Mountain, Michigan

Boyne Mountain in Michigan is one of our go-to’s when we are looking for a mix of outdoor adventure and relaxation. During the winter months, Boyne Mountain transforms into a snowy paradise , perfect for hitting the slopes. Whether you’re a seasoned skier or a first-timer, the resort has trails for all levels. We started my son on skis when he was three, and we’ve had years of fun ski vacations ever since.

But we love Boyne Mountain in the summer too. As the snow melts and the landscape blooms, the resort offers a plethora of different activities. We’ve found ourselves exploring hiking trails, enjoying scenic chairlift rides, and even trying our hand at ziplining, which is an absolute blast. The chance to experience the natural beauty of Michigan from the treetops was unforgettable, offering both adrenaline-pumping fun and moments of awe at the panoramic views.

One of the things I love about Boyne Mountain is how accessible everything is. We usually stay at the lodge and with a range of activities and restaurants on-site (the first night is always the Trophy Room) , sometimes we spend an entire weekend without leaving the resort!

Find your perfect room at the Grand Mountain Lodge here!

Tips for Planning Your Mom-Son Trip

Planning a mom-and-son trip can be an exciting opportunity to bond and create unforgettable memories, but it also requires a bit of planning to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Here are some general tips to help you plan a successful vacation:

Involvement is key

Start by involving your son in the planning process. This not only makes him feel valued and excited about the trip but also ensures that the activities you choose are interesting to both of you. Sit down together and discuss potential destinations, activities, and things you both want to see and do. I usually do a little research and then present him with some ideas and let him lead the way from there.

Packing the essentials

When it comes to packing, make a list of essentials together. Depending on your destination, this might include weather-appropriate clothing, comfortable shoes for exploring, sunscreen, hats, and any necessary gear for planned activities (like swimwear for the beach or warm layers for skiing) . Don’t forget to pack any favorite snacks, games, or books to keep entertained during travel times. This is also a great opportunity to teach your son about planning and responsibility by having him pack his own bag with supervision.

Be flexible!

While having a plan is important, the beauty of a mom and son trip often lies in the spontaneous adventures that arise. Create an itinerary that includes your must-do activities but leaves room for unexpected discoveries. Maybe you’ll stumble upon a local festival, a hidden beach, or a recommended diner that wasn’t on your radar. These unplanned moments are often the highlights of our trips, so be open to deviating from the plan.

Balance activities

This is a good tip for ANY family travel , but I always try to strive for a balance between activities that are fun and those that are relaxing or educational. For instance, after a day at an amusement park, consider a quieter day exploring a natural park or visiting a museum. I’ve found my son is much more receptive to a museum or landmark if we’ve spent the day before doing something fun and active.

Document your journey

Finally, encourage your son to document the trip in his own way, whether through photos, a journal, or collecting souvenirs. This not only enhances the experience but also gives him something personal to look back on. And I love looking back at our years of trips and seeing how he’s grown.

I can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for all the roads traveled and the memories made with my son. From our very first getaway, when he was just a tiny guy stepping wide-eyed into the grand world of elementary school adventures, to the more recent escapades that have seen us exploring every nook and cranny from Pigeon Forge to Peoria, each trip has been a wonderful experience and now memory.

Reflecting on these destinations, from the adrenaline-pumping theme parks of Orlando to the serene beaches of Siesta Key , it’s clear that the essence of these mom and son vacations isn’t just about the places we’ve been. It’s about the laughter shared over missed turns (o r trying to find someplace when both our phones were dead! ), the excitement of discovering new foods., and the in-depth conversations I don’t think we would have had at home.

These travels have taught us both so much more than just how to pack efficiently or navigate airport security. They’ve shown us the value of stepping out of our daily routines to embrace the joy of discovery, the importance of adapting when plans go awry, and the beauty of the world around us. More than anything, they’ve underscored the irreplaceable bond that forms when you share the road with someone you love.

So, as you contemplate your next mom and son getaway, remember that the perfect destination is any place where you can explore, laugh, and grow together. Whether it’s the bustling streets of Chicago, the historic charm of Cincinnati, or the magical realms of Disneyland, there are so many fantastic choices out there.

And remember, the journey is as much about the moments of connection as it is about the destinations themselves. So pack your bags, set off on that road less traveled, and discover the endless adventures that await you and your son. My final bit of advice. Take that trip – you won’t regret it!
