Night Safari’s animal show returns with new amphitheatre, revamped cast and storyline

night safari amphitheatre show

SINGAPORE – The Night Safari’s Creatures of the Night show reopened on Tuesday in a new amphitheatre with a refreshed cast and storyline.

The new 1,000-seat theatre next to the park entrance is 30 per cent bigger than its predecessor and fully sheltered, which allows the animal show to proceed regardless of weather conditions.

Alongside pre-existing animal ambassadors such as the fennec fox, the show will feature three new species – the Indian crested porcupines, raccoon dogs and bearded pigs. More animals, such as servals and hyenas, are also slated to make a return.

Ms Chan Poh Shan, assistant vice-president of animal behaviour and programmes at Mandai Wildlife Group, said that such animal presentations are an important way for guests to learn more about the animals and where they fit in the larger ecosystem.

She added: “With the refreshed presentation narrative, we have introduced more animals that guests may not otherwise have the chance to see, and shine the spotlight on the enigmatic wildlife that come out under the cover of darkness, and their astounding natural abilities.”

Ms Chan said the Night Safari team spent the last few months getting the animals used to the new environment, which has additions such as new water features and thematic trees for the new show.

These animals were trained using humane methods, such as positive reinforcement, to highlight their behaviours in the wild.

Other performative behaviour, like getting otters to put plastic bottles into recycling bins, were also encouraged in the animals.

However, all this behaviour is voluntary, said Ms Chan.

“With positive reinforcement training, all animals can choose whether they would like to engage in behaviour for a treat or not,” added Ms Chan.

Ms Chan said: “What’s important is that we build rapport with the animals.”

Besides the new show, the Night Safari has also introduced two new exhibits, which will rotate different animal ambassadors along the walkway towards the amphitheatre.

Here, guests can observe animals such as fennec foxes and binturongs – a South-east Asian bear cat – as well as reticulated and Burmese pythons, in naturalistic environments.

Animal behaviour and programmes vice-president Gail Laule said that the show was revamped to give guests a more immersive and educational experience of wildlife.

She added: “For almost two decades, Creatures of the Night has offered guests a rare look into the mysterious nocturnal animal kingdom… (For the new presentation) we also wanted to highlight the threats these species face, foster empathy for their plight and motivate everyone to do their part to preserve and protect these very special animals.”

Night Safari has unveiled a brand-new amphitheatre, and with it, a refreshed version of the  crowd's favourite animal presentation show,  Creatures of the Night.

Brand-New Amphitheatre

The amphitheatre is now in a new fully sheltered location near the park entrance, allowing presentations to go on in inclement weather.

Multiple new tech elements such as an LED wall and the latest in surround sound and lighting have been introduced to elevate the storytelling and transport the audience into new environments.

Inspired by natural landscapes, the stage is thoughtfully designed with water features and thematic trees to bring out the natural behaviours of the animals.

The new space also features spacious back-of-house facilities that allow the programme animals to exhibit their diverse range of natural behaviours while they are not on stage, a key component in ensuring animal welfare and quality of life.

Renewed Version Of Animal Presentation Show, Creatures of the Night

night safari amphitheatre show

The renewed Creatures of the Night will include new animal species additions. An Indian Crested Porcupine and Raccoon Dog, as well as Bearded Pigs will share the stage with existing wildlife ambassadors, such as the Asian Small-clawed Otters, Malay Fish Owl, and Fennec Fox.

All animal presentations in Mandai Wildlife Group’s wildlife parks focus on highlighting the natural behaviours of animals. The animals are trained using positive reinforcement where they are rewarded with a treat when they complete the desired action. This ensures that all their behaviours are voluntary.

Night Safari Singapore: Our Reviews & How We Get There

Night Safari Singapore Reviews

In our Night Safari Singapore reviews, my wife and I share our personal experiences from our visit to the zoo, detailing what we enjoyed and what we didn’t.

Plus, I’ll guide you on how to get to Night Safari Singapore using MRT and bus , making your trip smooth and straightforward.

For me, this zoo is a top night activity in Singapore for its unique glimpse into the nocturnal animal world.

Let me share more about this zoo and the things you should take note before visiting. Let’s get started! 😊

What is Night Safari Singapore

Our night safari singapore reviews and impressions, safari ticket savings strategy, best time to visit night safari, night safari singapore map, catch the night safari tram ride early: a must-do experience, guide to walking trails, reserve early for show timings, dining option, photography tips, my suggested itinerary.

Comparisons with Daytime Zoo Experiences

Night Safari Singapore is the world’s first nocturnal wildlife park . Housing over 900 animals from approximately 100 species , it offers two main experiences : a tram ride or a walking trail .

On the tram, you can see a variety of animals like Malayan tigers and White African lions, each in their element under the cloak of night.

If you choose to walk, expect close encounters with creatures like sloth bears and Asian otters.

The journey is made even more memorable with captivating animal show, where the nocturnal talents of these creatures are displayed, adding an extra layer of wonder to your visit.

Time We Visit:

We visited the Night Safari Singapore during the earliest time slot at 7:15 PM. I highly recommend doing the same because you get to see the animals in much better light.

Our Tram Ride Journey:

We began our adventure with the tram ride. It’s a great way to get up close with the animals, although taking good photographs from the moving tram can be a bit challenging.

Animal Show Experience:

After the tram ride, I recommend checking out the Creatures of the Night show at 8:30 PM. It’s not only entertaining but also really informative, giving you a fascinating glimpse into the world of nocturnal animals.

Walking Trails Feedback:

Finally, we explored the four walking trails. It’s a chance to see different species of animals, many of them are active at night.

While some animals are easily visible, others are harder to spot. It requires a bit of patience, but taking your time to observe the animals is definitely worth it.

How Much Time We Allocated for the Park Visit:

We spent around 3 hours exploring the park, and it was time well spent.

There’s so much to see and experience, so I recommend setting aside at least this much time to fully enjoy the Night Safari.

Overall Experience:

We thoroughly enjoyed the Night Safari Singapore as a unique zoo experience. It’s a fantastic place to spend an evening, and adding it to our Singapore 5-day itinerary was a choice I’m happy about.

Also, a useful tip: don’t forget to bring a water bottle. You can refill it at the free water dispensers near the washrooms, which is both convenient and eco-friendly.

Thing We Didn’t Like:

There are some mosquitoes at the Night Safari, so I highly recommend bringing mosquito repellent. This small preparation can make your experience much more comfortable.

When you buy tickets at the Night Safari’s on-site counter, the regular prices are SGD $55 for adults and SGD $38 for children aged 3 to 12.

But here’s a tip: book the Night Safari tickets online here to enjoy special pricing. We did this and it was a smooth process.

You’ll receive e-tickets in your email, which you can simply show on your phone for a convenient and easy park entry.

For the best experience at the Night Safari Singapore , aim for the earliest admission time at 7:15 PM .

Going early helps you see the animals more clearly, as it’s less dark. This also gives you plenty of time to explore without feeling rushed.

Additionally, more animals are active during this time , increasing your chances of seeing high-energy animals in action.

The park is open from 7.15 PM until midnight, with the last entry at 11:15 PM.

Entry Time Slots: 7:15 PM, 7:45 PM, 8:15 PM, 8:45 PM, 9:15 PM & 9:45 PM

Night Safari Singapore Map

To effortlessly navigate Night Safari, I suggest downloading the zoo map here . This will make it easier for you to explore the park using just your smartphone.

It’s not advisable that you use a hardcopy map because it can be very hard to see and read it at night.

Night Safari Singapore Tram

To make the most of your visit, I suggest having dinner early and lining up at the entry gate by 6:30 PM . This lets you catch the earliest tram ride at Night Safari and cut down on waiting times .

While it’s tough to take good photographs from the moving tram, the upside is that you can fully immerse yourself in observing and enjoying the animals. It’s a unique opportunity to see them up close without distractions.

Night Safari Singapore Walking Trail

The Night Safari Singapore offers 4 walking trails that allow you to see the animals up-close . These are Leopard Trail , Fishing Cat Trail , East Lodge Trail , and Tasmanian Devil Trail .

Each trail comes with a variety of animals. So, you just have to pick the trail that you are interested in.

1. Leopard Trail

Leopard Trail

The Leopard Trail lets you see nocturnal animals in action. You’ll spot popular cats like Sri Lankan leopards, clouded leopards, golden cats, civets, and lions.

But it’s not just about cats; as you walk further, you’ll also encounter porcupines, eagle owls, giant flying squirrels, and fruit bats.

2. Fishing Cat Trail

Fishing Cat Trail

On the Fishing Cat Trail, you’ll find predators like striped hyenas and fishing cats. These animals are highly alert and strategic in hunting their prey. Keep your eyes open to catch their impressive moves.

Besides these, you’ll also see binturongs, pangolins, Asian otters, and more!

3. East Lodge Trail

East Lodge Trail

The East Lodge Trail blends African and Asian wildlife, showcasing animals from both tropical and grassland environments.

Here, you’ll find Malayan Tigers, serval cats, sloth bears, and spotted hyenas.

Also, keep an eye out for unique species like babirusas, anoas, and bongos. If these animals fascinate you, this trail is a must-visit.

4. Tasmanian Devil Trail

Tasmanian Devil Trail

The Tasmanian Devil Trail offers a unique chance to see wallabies, often with babies in their pouches.

This area, focusing on wildlife from Australia, New Guinea, and New Zealand, features charming animals like sugar gliders, barn owls, and possums.

You can also spot the impressive white-lipped python here.

Creatures of the Night Show

To fully enjoy your Night Safari experience, don’t miss the “Creatures of the Night” show at the Night Safari Amphitheatre.

The show runs at 7:30 PM, 8:30 PM, and 9:30 PM. On Fridays to Sundays, there’s an additional show at 10:15 PM.

This show puts a spotlight on some amazingly talented animals. You’ll be entertained by owls, civets, and fennec foxes, each showcasing their adorable antics.

Remember, you can only book seats 2 hours before each presentation. So, it’s crucial to plan ahead and reserve early to ensure you get a spot.

You can enjoy dinner at Ulu Ulu Safari Restaurant , located right next to the Night Safari entrance .

Designed in a rustic village style , the restaurant serves a variety of dishes, ranging from local specialties to international cuisine .

It’s an ideal spot for a quick snack or a leisurely meal, surrounded by the sounds of nocturnal wildlife.

When visiting Night Safari Singapore, it’s crucial to remember that flash photography is not allowed . This is to protect the animals, as bright flashes can startle and disturb them.

For night photography, here are some tips:

  • Use a High ISO Setting: This helps your camera capture more light, making it easier to photograph in low-light conditions.
  • Experiment with Exposure: Longer exposure can capture more details but requires a steady hand or support.
  • Be Patient: Night photography requires time and patience. Wait for the right moment to capture the animals in their natural behavior.

For a better and more convenient trip to Night Safari, check out my recommended itinerary below. It’s designed to help you fully experience and enjoy every moment of your visit.

  • 6:30 PM – Queue up at the entry gate of Night Safari
  • 7:15 PM – Enter Night Safari and hop on the tram ride
  • 8:30 PM – Watch Creatures of the Night show (25 Minutes Show)
  • 9:00 PM – Stroll along Fishing Cat Trail, Leopard Trail, East Lodge Trail and Tasmanian Devil Trail

1. Guided tram tour

Night safari tickets.

First things first, it’s good to note that your Night Safari tickets will come with a Guided Tram Ride . Lasting 40 minutes, the tram takes you through six geographical zones and gives commentary on the safari’s animals.

The animals in the park are kept in open-air enclosures which mimic their natural habitats. Keep your eyes peeled as the tram transports you from the Himalayan Foothills to the Indian Subcontinent . You might see exotic creatures such as Nile Hippos or spotted hyenas up close.

The main tram station is right next to the entrance, making the tram ride an ideal first activity.

2. Fishing Cat Trail

After the tram ride, head to the Fishing Cat Trail , one of the best walking trails in the Night Safari. Here, you can admire the fishing cat’s hunting skills. This crafty predator stalks fish by the water’s edge and disturbs the surface to imitate moving insects. When a fish swims to the surface looking for insect prey, the cat pounces.

night safari amphitheatre show

Another unique creature you can find along the trail is the Sunda pangolin. The pangolin is an anteater-like mammal covered in hard keratin scales. It rolls up into a ball when threatened. Other interesting animals you might come across include the Himalayan tahr, barking deer, and Indian gharial.

3. Leopard Trail

The end of the Fishing Cat Trail is connected to the Leopard Trail , which will be your next stop. The trail’s Clouded Leopards are one of the most ancient cat species. They can climb trees upside down by gripping the branches with sharp claws and using their tail to balance.

night safari amphitheatre show

Watch out for the Gir lions, a species found only in India’s Gir forest. Gir lions rest 20 hours a day to conserve energy for hunting. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch them on the prowl.

night safari amphitheatre show

Along the way, Malayan Flying foxes may glide past you. Don’t be alarmed — these flying foxes are frugivorous (meaning they only eat fruits) and won’t harm you.

4. East Lodge Trail

Accessible from the end of the Leopard Trail, the East Lodge Trail brings you into a magical forest where Africa meets Asia. You’ll see species from sub-Saharan Africa such as aardvarks and bongos alongside Malayan tigers and Sulawesi babirusa.

night safari amphitheatre show

You may not have heard of bongos but you’ll surely be struck by their otherworldly appearance. These antelopes have gorgeous reddish-brown coats with white stripes and long spiralled horns.

5. Tasmanian Devil Trail

Venture down under at the Tasmanian Devil Trail , which is inspired by the habitats of Australia , New Zealand , and New Guinea . In this area, you can see the Tasmanian Devils, carnivorous marsupials known for their sinister growls. Other Night Safari animals here include wallabies, sugar gliders, and barn owls.

Starring the Indian Crested Porcupine and Raccoon Dog as well as Bearded Pigs , watch these adorable critters squeeze through tree hollows and forage for food.  All animal presentations in Mandai Wildlife Group’s wildlife parks focus on highlighting the natural behaviours of animals, where the animals are rewarded with a treat when they complete the desired action – be it sorting trash, or showing off their skills.

With over 1000 seats in a revamped indoor amphitheatre , the show can now go on even during rainy weather and has unique elements like water features and elevated lighting. The lush amphitheatre looks more like a natural habitat than a stage, with rocks and trees giving it a rustic feel.

More of a mountain person than beach, more of a culture-trip person than just visits! Having travelled to most of North India when I was a kid to backpacking across South India in my adulthood, I learnt that you often find your 'self' in the most unpredicted of places. And that is my inspiration to travel. To connect with nature, people and cultures. Books are my companion and I find my soul in trees. Music, yoga and literature is my passion. I often dream of attending a Peruvian wedding or living in a quaint Hungarian town for a while. When I am not writing, I would love to go hiking or explore the hidden valleys of Himalayas. Until then, some running and some literature is enough for me to get by!

Neil Young reunites with Crazy Horse after a decade, performs double encore

night safari amphitheatre show

On Thursday night, magic happened in Tennesseee.

Singer-songwriter Neil Young and rock band Crazy Horse came together to perform their hits over a two-hour show at FirstBank Amphitheater on their first tour together in a decade.

The 2024 "Love Earth Tour" features the now 78-year-old singer alongside the Los Angeles rock band yet again.

Canadian singer-songwriter Young, best known for songs "Heart of Gold," "Harvest Moon" and "Old Man," released the album "Fu##in' Up" with Crazy Horse on April 25, featuring nine rock 'n' roll tracks. The two have released 15 studio albums together.

Young and Crazy Horse kicked off their brief 16-stop tour on April 24 in San Diego and will continue with upcoming stops in Virginia, New Jersey, New York and more.

Thursday's concert in Franklin was originally slated for Wednesday evening, but was postponed by a day due to  inclement weather .

But Thursday night brought the calm after the storm; the evening was serene.

Neil Young returns to Spotify after 2-year hiatus following Joe Rogan controversy

After opener Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping , a musical performance art experience that draws from religion, Young hit the stage.

The set-up featured a backdrop with a galloping horse and giant speaker cabinets and road cases, the same ones Young took on the road with him for his "Rust Never Sleeps" tour in 1978.

Young appeared in a striped cap, a denim work shirt that featured paint splatters and a Spartan Truck Equipment patch, black pants, black shoes and of course, his guitar, Old Black .

He mentioned the venue's beauty multiple times — a stage nestled in the woods of Graystone Quarry in Thompson’s Station.

"How you doin out there? Nice to see you," Young said to the Franklin crowd.

"What a beautiful place. You guys are very lucky to have this place."

Alongside Young was the band, comprised of 80-year-old Billy Talbot on bass and 80-year-old Ralph Molina on drums. They also have a new member, Micah Nelson on guitar.

Nelson, Willie Nelson 's 33-year-old son, took over for the band's previous guitarist Nils Lofgren earlier this year.

Throughout the show, Neil Young and the band played a 17-song set, full with jam sessions and occasional harmonies. Young was energized and playful, captivating the crowd with his trademark nasally, emotional voice.

The set list was mostly comprised of older hits, like 1969's "Cinnamon Girl" and 1972's "Heart of Gold."

The band didn't play any songs from their recent album; the most recent song was 1996's "Scattered (Let's Think About Livin')." Nelson's big moment came during the tune; he traded his guitar to play a swinging keyboard that descended from the ceiling.

Young's guitar playing—both electric and acoustic—was adept and agile. Though Young shared in January he has been playing guitar with arthritis in his hand for years, audience members wouldn't have guessed.

He played the blues on song "Vampire Blues," hitting guitar licks with a precision like Stevie Ray Vaughan's. He also performed drawn-out, warping guitar solos on songs like "Like a Hurricane" and "Powderfinger."

Between songs, Young would hand his guitar off to his techs (who all wore white lab coats), but was audibly uncomfortable until he had a guitar in his arms yet again.

The night's concert walked the line between a Young that leaned into classic, grunge rock 'n' roll with Crazy Horse and a Young that gently cooed with Crosby, Stills & Nash in '69, strumming an acoustic.

Young pulled off the balancing act.

Here are some of the top moments from the night.

Neil Young opens with 'Cortez the Killer,' sings newly released verse

On a purple-lit stage, Neil Young and Crazy Horse kicked off the show with the 1975 song "Cortez the Killer."

The first lyrics from Young brought cheers from the audience as he sang, "He came dancing across the water / With his galleons and guns."

Young surprised fans at the first concert of the tour by singing unreleased lyrics to the song, ones he said did not record due to a power outage on the recording console in 1975.

Young found the lyric manuscript, he said in an interview mid-April this year.

The verse was lost for nearly 50 years. Young sang the verse again in Franklin.

“I floated on the water / I ate that ocean wave / Two weeks after the slaughter/ I was living in a cave / They came too late to get me / But there’s no one here to set me free / From this rocky grave / To that snowed-out ocean wave.”

Neil Young calls on local non-profits to support his eco-friendly mission

Neil Young has been vocal about his environmental efforts throughout his career .

In 1985, Young helped establish the annual Farm Aid concerts . In 2022, he released album "World Record," an album that focuses on climate change. Later that year, Young said he refused to play venues that are supported by factory farms .

The environmentalism was felt at his Franklin show.

Upon entering the concert, fans saw a series of tents and tables from local environmental organizations all hand picked by Young, including Tennessee Local Food . The organizations attended the concert and chatted with fans about their missions.

Young calls it the "LOVE EARTH Village."

At different stops on the tour, hundreds of non-profits working for sustainability and social equity will join to chat about issues like organic farming, wildlife protection, Native American rights and climate change solutions.

According to a venue employee, Young also changed the menu for the venue's offerings on Thursday, opting for more eco-friendly options (Coke products were nowhere to be seen).

On a handout at the venue, Young wrote, "Support your friends, support your land, and support the people that want to care for the land.

"The revolution starts with us. The revolution starts with you."

Neil Young goes acoustic mid-show, takes stage alone

At one point, Young took an empty stage, traded Old Black for an acoustic, and donned the harmonica around his neck.

He sang songs, "Comes a Time," "Heart of Gold" and "Human Highway" onstage alone, leaning into his folk singer-songwriter roots.

Despite the occasional hoot or holler in the audience, a hush crept over the amphitheater as Young sang, played plucky guitar and showcased his harmonica skills between verses.

It was a gentler, softer and more intimate side to the evening.

"Heart of Gold" stood out among the acoustic section.

Young sang his biggest hit: "Keep me searching / For a heart of gold / I've been a miner / For a heart of gold."

An encore and...another encore

Before the encore, Young ended his set with song "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)," leaving the audience with the classic and singing, "Hey hey, my my / Rock and roll can never die."

And it didn't die just then, Young and the band returned to the stage to play "Roll Another Number (For the Road)" as their encore.

After the song finished, the audience didn't stop cheering. Young and company came back to deliver a second encore, this time three songs long.

For encore two, they performed "Danger Bird," "Don't Cry No Tears" and "Sedan Delivery," ending the night on a grungy rock 'n' roll note that included pink lights and plenty of reverb.

Afterwards, the band and Young gathered arm-in-arm in a single spotlight and gave their final bow.
