Positano.com: Your Complete Guide

Positano is the most famous and iconic village on the Amalfi Coast , the spectacular strip of coastline with the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea to one side and the peaks of the Lattari Mountains to the other. The coastline stretches for 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of Naples (Napoli) and north of Salerno in the southern Italian region of Campania. The entire Amalfi Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site , with highlights including Positano as well as the equally picturesque towns of Amalfi and Ravello .

Take a dip in the crystalline waters off the coast, admire the dramatic cliffs by sea on a mini-cruise, relax over a romantic dinner overlooking the water, and stroll along the narrow, twisting lanes under a lush canopy of wisteria and lemon trees. These are the unique charms that make Positano one of the top destinations in all of Italy for those who want to sample the country’s timeless "la dolce vita" atmosphere.

Where is Positano?

Positano is the first town you reach on the Amalfi Coast when arriving from Naples , and it's about a 20-minute drive from the Sorrentine Peninsula and about 30 minutes from Capri by ferry. After Positano, the next towns are Praiano , Conca de' Marini , Amalfi , and the other villages along the coast.

You can reach Positano by bus from Sorrento or Amalfi (there are two stops: "La Sponda" and "Chiesa Nuova"). There are also ferries in the summer from Sorrento and Capri.

How to Get to the Amalfi Coast

Where should I stay on the Amalfi Coast?

Positano is perfect for couples, with its romantic atmosphere and leisurely days on the beaches: Fornillo , Arienzo , Laurito , or Spiaggia Grande (also called Marina Grande). There are great cafés and restaurants and you can also take a boat tour to admire the Li Galli Islets , Capri , and the surrounding coastline. Keep in mind that Positano is a vertical town , with a number of steep staircases that are not accessible for those with limited mobility or small children.

Amalfi is flatter than Positano and set in the middle of the coastline. There is just one small beach, but there is a convenient boat service that will take you to a number of other nearby beaches that are only accessible by sea.

Ravello is set on the clifftop above the coastline and is famous for its stunning views from the terraces of its historic villas. The town is also home to a number of art and music festivals.

Maiori and Minori are better choices for families, as they are flat and have an easily-accessible beach.

Where to Choose a Hotel

What is there to see and how should I get around?

Positano is a small village and you can see its sights easily in half a day. More than just a place to visit, Positano is more an experience. Stroll along Via Pasitea to admire the shops selling "pezze di Positano" (local resort wear in linen and silk) or relax on one of the terraces to admire the views over the colorful houses tumbling down the cliffside.

One of the most famous landmarks in Positano is the colorful majolica cupola of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta , which houses the Byzantine Madonna Nera that is the object of much devotion among locals. This historic icon was found on the beach after a violent storm and on that site, the church was built. You can also visit the ancient Roman domus next to the church, the recently excavated ruins of a seaside villa with frescos similar to those found in Pompeii. The Roman Archaeological Museum where the villa is located is open all year round for guided visits.

Be sure to take in the Saracen towers , ancient watchtowers that were built on strategic spots along the coast and were used to protect the locals from pirates. Positano is home to three of these: Torre Trasita , Torre di Sponda , and Torre di Fornillo .

From Positano, head up to Montepertuso and the hamlet of Nocelle to walk along the Path of the Gods to Agerola .

The easiest way to get from Positano to nearby towns and Capri is with the ferries and boats that set off from the small pier in Positano. Otherwise, there are Sita buses . We do not suggest driving due to the heavy traffic and limited parking. For couples, the most convenient way to get around is by scooter.

positano italy travel packages

Le Sirenuse

While the entirety of Italy's 4,660 miles of coastline is worthy of a visit, there's nothing quite like the teeny, tiny cliffside village of Positano.

Nestled along the Amalfi Coast, Positano is a positively quaint community with fewer than 4,000 full-time residents. But its reputation as a vacation haven filled with fantastic food, scenery, and utter romance has made it a larger-than-life destination beckoning to travelers from all over the world. If you're ready to experience the colorful coastal homes, swim in the glittering azure waters, and absolutely gorge yourself on heaping plates of pasta, we've got a few properties you won’t want to miss. Here are 10 of the best hotels to stay at during your visit to Positano, Italy, based on our firsthand experience and editor-loved properties, as well as winners of T+L’s prestigious World’s Best Awards.

Il San Pietro di Positano

There are gorgeous balconies outside each room.

If you're someone hoping to explore the area on foot, this hotel can feel a bit remote.

Il San Pietro di Positano, a T+L World's Best Awards favorite, is a stunning example of just how luxurious this region of Italy can really be. Every single room here comes with a private balcony, allowing guests to swing open their doors and look out to the Mediterranean Sea. The hotel is beloved not just for its impeccable service but also for its familial atmosphere, making it feel more like you're staying with close friends than with strangers. Here, guests can also spend their days at the hotel's private beach, dine in its Michelin-starred restaurant, or simply enjoy the classic Italian elegance in the common spaces, including the pool and spa.

The Details:

  • Distance From Airport: About 39 miles from Naples Airport
  • Accessibility: No accessible rooms listed
  • Nearby Attractions: Ceramiche Casola and Arienzo Beach Club are within walking distance
  • Parking: Parking is available and complimentary
  • Rates: Starting at $1,766 per night

This hotel features an inviting family atmosphere.

The hotel lacks a private beach, which its competitors offer.

With just 58 rooms and suites, Le Sirenuse, another World's Best Awards favorite, is legendary among Positano devotees. The hotel offers perhaps the best views of the area's famed colorful houses lining the hillside along with the crystalline sea below. It's a place that is both sophisticated and distinctly inviting, thanks in large part to the fact it remains a family-owned hotel to this day. Guests here can expect nothing but top-notch amenities, including a lovely pool, its own Michelin-guided restaurant, and plenty of daily activities on offer, including everything from pilates to cocktail-making classes.

  • Distance From Airport: Approximately 39 miles from Naples Airport
  • Nearby Attractions: Spiaggia Grande Beach, the port for boats to Capri, and many of Positano's best shops
  • Parking: Private parking available for €100 per day
  • Rates: Starting at $1,093

Hotel Poseidon

It offers a private car you can take out any time.

The hotel's hillside location might pose a challenge for those looking to explore on foot.

Hotel Poseidon, a one-time private villa (just imagine this being your private home), is now a ravishing boutique hotel that exudes plenty of Italian charm. Its location atop the cliff provides endless views that seem to go on for miles out to sea and right into the heart of town in the other direction. The hotel features all the usual amenities like a glittering pool, spa, and delicious restaurants, but it's got one more incredible feature to love: a 1970s Convertible Beetle, which guests can use free of charge.

  • Distance From Airport: About 38 miles from Naples Airport
  • Accessibility: No accessible rooms for 2024, but the hotel is working to open accessible rooms by 2025.
  • Nearby Attractions: Close to Spiaggia Grande Beach and local shops
  • Parking: Available on-site for an additional $53
  • Rates: Starting at $478 a night

Villa Magia

The attentive staff is always ready to lend a hand.

Villa Magia is set seriously high on a hill, but again, the staff is here to help when you need to get up or down.

Villa Magia is one more spot where it feels like you stepped into your own private villa. The boutique property, which is actually a historic watchtower, comes with just a handful of rooms, ensuring supremely personalized service. And when we say this place is attentive, we mean it. The staff is always at the ready to carry your luggage up the steep steps and drive you back and forth from area attractions, so you never have to ascend the stairs to their front door. Guests here can also spend the entire day at the hotel without ever wanting to leave, thanks to its two swimming pools, spa, and on-site restaurant.

  • Nearby Attractions: Fornillo Beach is just a 10-minute walk away
  • Parking: Valet parking available
  • Rates: Starting at $744 a night

Hotel Palazzo Murat

Its dazzling garden is open to guests.

Its central location means things can get busy.

Feel like royalty at the Hotel Palazzo Murat, the one-time summer residence of Joachim Murat, King of Naples. At this historic boutique hotel, guests can book rooms with private balconies offering sweeping views of either its lush gardens or the sea, each furnished with antiques mixed with modern amenities to provide maximum comfort. And its location lower on the hill means exploring the neighborhood on foot is a breeze, including walking right over to the nearby beach.

  • Accessibility: No accessible rooms available
  • Nearby Attractions: Spiaggia Grande Beach is a 3-minute walk
  • Parking: Paid private parking is available for $31 per day
  • Rates: Starting at $467 a night

Villa Treville

Its epic suites feature private plunge pools.

Its location is a bit outside Positano's center.

Formerly the home of director Franco Zeffirelli, Villa Treville has kept much of its theatrical elegance. Each of its suites appears to be more opulent than the last, with gilded bed frames, soft furnishings, gleaming marble floors, and private plunge pools for when you want to take a dip but don't want to see a single other human being. Everyone checking in is also given five-star treatment, including a welcome drink, access to an organic mini bar, and boat service to and from the Positano Pier or to and from Treville Laurito Beach.

  • Distance From Airport: Approximately 37 miles from Naples International Airport
  • Accessibility: No accessible rooms listed.
  • Nearby Attractions: Close to Spiaggia Grande Beach and a short drive to the trailhead to the Path of the Gods
  • Parking: Free self-parking
  • Rates: Starting at $1,054

Hotel Eden Roc

Hotel Eden Roc Positano

All 28 rooms come with sea views.

The walk back from the beach can feel steep.

Hotel Eden Roc is tailor-made for those looking for great views. Its privileged location on the hill means every suite gets to see the water in full view. And while all its rooms are certainly worthy of a stay, the villas are utterly sublime. For example, its Hotel Eden Villa includes a private pool, multiple bedrooms, and a large living room so you can gather with your travel companions with ease.

  • Distance From Airport: Approximately 39 miles from Naples International Airport
  • Nearby Attractions: Close to central Positano shops and the Santa Maria Assunta church
  • Parking: Private parking available for an additional $53
  • Rates: Starting at $509 a night

Hotel Le Agavi

Its private funicular takes you up and down the cliffside.

Hotel Le Agavi is not particularly accessible for guests with reduced mobility.

Hotel Le Agavi sits just outside Positano, which gives the hotel a little breathing room from the crowds. Here, guests can unwind by the pool overlooking the sea below, or spend time in their spacious suites that come with balconies or terraces ensuring a picturesque view from every angle. But, hands down the coolest part of this property is its on-site funicular that takes guests for a ride straight from the hotel to the beach and back again.

  • Distance From Airport: About 37 miles from Naples Airport
  • Nearby Attractions: Positano's town center is a short walk and both Fornillo Beach and Spiaggia Grande Beach are within walking distance
  • Parking: Private on-site parking available for $52 a day
  • Rates: Starting at $654 per night

Hotel Marincanto

It has private beach access.

The terraced layout means there are multiple levels to navigate, which can be difficult for some.

Hotel Marincanto is vibrant, colorful, and serene all at the same time. The hotel, which sits just at the edge of Spiaggia Grande Beach, allows guests to stay eye level with the water, especially as they sit around its infinity pool that seems to blend right into the horizon. And, thanks to its lower location, guests can take a few steps directly down to the water for a swim. The hotel's restaurant, Al Marincanto, is also a highlight, serving locally sourced foods on a terrace under thick vines and bougainvillea, creating a truly enchanting experience.

  • Accessibility: No accessible rooms
  • Nearby Attractions: Close to Positano's town center and a short drive to the trailhead for Il Sentiero Degli Dei.
  • Parking: Parking available
  • Rates: Starting at $383 a night

Hotel Buca di Bacco

It has direct beach access.

There's no pool on-site, but it does have that direct beach access.

If you want to be right in the middle of the action, there's no better place to check into than Hotel Buca di Bacco, as it sits right on Spiaggia Grande. Guests can choose bedrooms facing away from the water for a quieter stay or go all out with its DeLuxe room, which offers both a terrace and a fantastic sea view. Guests can also dive a bit deeper into the local culture by taking part in the hotel's exclusive cooking class, where they'll learn regional cooking styles, and of course, get to taste their creations at the end.

  • Distance From Airport: Approximately 36 miles from Naples International Airport
  • Nearby Attractions: Situated on Spiagga Grande beach, and close to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta
  • Parking: No parking available.
  • Rates: Starting at $283 a night

Know Before You Go

The terrain is steep in positano.

Be prepared to walk some serious hills to get to and from your hotel and to the local shops, restaurants, and beaches. Wearing comfortable shoes can help, but make sure to also build in extra time to make it to any of your reservations. Also check with your hotel to see if they have free shuttle services or porters who can help you navigate the streets and assist with your luggage up and down the steep steps.

Finding parking can be challenging

We won't mince words with this one – parking in Positano is nearly impossible. Avoid bringing a car altogether if you can. Check in with your hotel to see if they offer shuttle services to and from the airport, or at minimum, if they have a parking garage or valet on-site. You could spend hours trying to find a parking space in town, and that's precious time you could be spending by the pool instead.

Stay on the beach for sunset

Yes, the beaches of Positano are gorgeous all day long, but for a really great show, make sure to stay on the beach for sunset. This will give you the best views of the colorful homes lining the hillsides and a chance to see the area while it’s bathed in golden light – a truly magical experience.

Leave time to explore other towns on the coastline

Positano is situated in prime Italian coastal territory. While you're in town, make sure to leave a little time to explore the surrounding area, which includes the towns of Amalfi, Ravello, and Sorrento (to name a few), each famous in its own right. And if you happen to be in Positano when the seas are calm, do try to book a ferry to the island of Capri, which can take as little as 30 minutes to reach.

If visiting during peak season, be sure to book in advance

The entire Amalfi Coast gets rather chilly from late fall through early spring, so peak tourist season in the summer can get crowded. And while that certainly means the area will be in full festive party mode while you're there, it also means that places will book up quickly. To make the most of your stay, make sure to book your accommodations, restaurant reservations, and excursions as early as possible.

How We Chose These Hotels

Several of the hotels chosen for this story have earned spots in T+L’s World's Best Awards. Many are also personal favorites of our editors. Writer Stacey Leasca also chose additional hotels based on personal visits to Positano and research of top-ranked spots. Stacey has visited the Amalfi Coast several times, staying in and touring various hotels and spending evenings watching the sunset in Positano (just as she recommends you do above). She also consulted family and friends who frequent the region for their input. And finally, as with all our hotel roundups, editors ensure all hotel recommendations we make align with our core T+L Hotel Values .

Sorrento, Rome and Venice: Your Way

Rome and sorrento: your way, more about sorrento.

Sorrento may have become a jumping-off point for visitors to Pompeii, Capri, and Amalfi, but you can find countless reasons to love it for itself. The Sorrentine people are fair-minded and hardworking, bubbling with life and warmth. The tufa cliff on which the town rests is like a great golden pedestal spread over the bay, absorbing the sunlight in deepening shades through the mild days, and orange and lemon trees waft a luscious perfume in spring. In the evening, people fill cafés to nibble, sip, and talk nonstop; then, arms linked, they stroll and browse through the maze of shop-lined lanes.

The news is usually wonderful for the weather. Sheltered by the Lattari Mountains arcing east to west across the peninsula and inland from the Amalfi Coast, and exposed to cool breezes from two bays, the Sorrentine Peninsula enjoys a climate that is among the mildest in Italy; the temperature rarely falls below 50°F in winter, or climbs above 90°F in summer. In winter many hotels close, from November to March. As for rain, or what the locals call passione de Pasqua ("tears of passion" at Easter), it's rare although weeklong storms can strike.

Top Experiences

Capri and Blue Grotto : The Blue Grotto is a cave that can only be entered by boat and is best visited earlier in the day for optimal lighting. The cave is part of the island of Capri. Capri is a small island just off the coast and is a day trip from Sorrento by ferry.

Beach Clubs : There are four beach clubs in the city, where you can rent a sun lounger or a deck chair. Many have umbrellas and on-site food is usually available.

Sedile Dominova : Since 1877, this building has been a trade union, representing all the different artisans of the city. Built in the fifteenth century, Sorrento aristocracy were the original residents. Its beautifully preserved frescoes are a highlight.

Piazza Tasso : The central business and commercial area in Sorrento. Once the sun sets, the locals stroll the area. There are many shops, cafés and restaurants located here. In addition, the Baroque Church del Carmine is also here.

Enjoy a two-hour guided tour of the world-famous archaeological and historical site of Pompeii, the Roman town buried under the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. This buried city was rediscovered in the 16th century, but exploration only began in 1748. Work continued systematically through the 19th century up to the most recent excavations, aimed at restoring and attributing the proper value to the ancient city and its exceptional archeological heritage. The archeological area of Pompeii extends over 66 hectares, of which 49 have been excavated and 12 are open to the public. With its excavated area and the preservation state of its buildings, Pompeii can be considered the only archaeological site that gives the real image of a Roman city.

After lunch (own expense), transfer to Mount Vesuvius to discover why the locals have been both fascinated and frightened by Europe’s oldest active volcano for almost 2,000 years. In 79 A.D., Vesuvius stood 3 kilometers high and its last eruption took place in 1944. Visitors can reach Mount Vesuvius by car, but must walk the last 700 meters to reach the crater, standing roughly 1,281 meters high. Your guide will take you on an adventurous hike up this one-of-a-kind attraction to view the surrounding area and the crater beneath your feet. Walk around the edge of the crater and enjoy the fantastic view over the Gulf of Naples.

Positano: Positano was a port of the Amalfi Republic in medieval times, and prospered in the 16th and 17th centuries. But by the mid-19th century, more than half the population emigrated, primarily to Australia. Positano began to attract large numbers of tourists in the 1950s after John Steinbeck published his essay about Positano in Harper's Bazaar, writing: "Positano bites deep .... It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.” Enjoy this magical coastal village and wander its streets, browsing its artisan boutiques, shore-front stores and gourmet delicatessens.

Amalfi: The town of Amalfi was the capital of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi, an important trading power in the Mediterranean between 839 and 1200. In the 1920s and 1930s, Amalfi was a popular holiday destination mainly for the British upper class and aristocracy. Today, Amalfi is the main town of the coast on which it is located, the Costiera Amalfitana (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and is an important tourist destination together with other towns on the same coast. Wander through the streets of this coastal gem, while you visit the highlights and try the coast’s most renowned treat: the infamous Limoncello.

Ravello: Ancient legend still recounts that it was to Ravello, with its breathtaking view of the Mediterranean and the dramatic Amalfi coastline, that Satan transported Jesus during his second temptation to show the beauty of the world's kingdoms. Historically, the town has served as a destination for artists, musicians, and writers, including Richard Wagner, M. C. Escher and Virginia Woolf, all of whom have either written or composed while staying in the town. Choose to take a journey through wonderful gardens, magical churches and arguably the most incredible panoramas in Europe.

3 Night Amalfi Coast Road Trip: Perfect Itinerary (+ Parking)

Photo of author

by Chelsea Newman

Just over an hour by car from the chaotic streets of Naples , the Amalfi Coast is famed for its picturesque cliffs, sparkling waters, and charming seaside towns, but its history is also very interesting. The town of Amalfi was established as a trading post in the 2nd century CE (you read that right!) and played an important role as an independent republic in the 10th and 11th centuries. It was later absorbed into the powerful Kingdom of Sicily. Since the 19th century, Amalfi and the surrounding coastal towns have been an inspiration for artists and a destination for travelers from all over, especially those looking to take an Amalfi Coast road trip through its gorgeous landscapes and towns.

All of the towns in this itinerary are very small, which means that the best way to experience them is to just wander around. In our ultimate guide to an Amalfi Coast road trip, we give you tips on where to eat, where to park, and some key points of interest. Andiamo !

positano italy travel packages

Table of Contents

Day 1: Positano and Praiaino

First stop is the stunning town of Positano, with multicolor houses that stretch up the rocky hillside. Positano has a pebbly beach where you can admire the town’s architecture. Nearby Fornillo beach is worth a look as well. There’s a lovely short walk that connects Fornillo beach to the main town. Swanky hotel Le Sirenuse gives a view of the town from above.

Where to eat in Positano

Heads up! Positano prices are off the charts. To save money, grab a panino from Eudoteca Cuomo ( Via dei Mulini, 3 ). Adamo ed Eva in Hotel Eden Roc offers great fresh fish and one of the most spectacular views in the town. Il Ritrovo is a family owned restaurant in the hills that you can reach by car or with a shuttle from the center of Positano.

Where to park in Positano

Parking in Positano is notoriously expensive and difficult to find. The main parking areas can be found on Google Maps, and we recommend calling ahead—sometimes they let you reserve a space. If you want to avoid parking in Positano altogether, drive up to the gorgeous tiny village of Nocelle, which has free street parking and a bus (a 20 minute ride) that goes down to Positano. Make sure to check the hours on the website.

Insider’s tip: parking along the Amalfi Coast

If you happen to see a street spot anywhere on the coast bordered by white lines, you can park there for free. Just make sure there’s no sign nearby that says solo residenti (residents only). If the parking space borders on the street are blue, you can park there as long as you pay the meter.

positano italy travel packages

After spending the morning and eating in Positano, drive the 25 minutes to Praiaino, stopping at any and all lookout points along the way to enjoy the view. Praiano is a less dense, less chaotic cliff town with winding streets that lead down to the beach. We recommend visiting the small but beautiful church of San Luca Evangelista. If you have time before sunset, climb up the stairs to see breathtaking views from the famous hiking trail Path of the Gods ( Sentiero degli Dei ). The entrance is on Via Costantinopoli. Just make sure you don’t go too far on the trail, and come down before it gets dark.

Where to eat in Praiano

Two delicious dinner options are Ristorante Franchino and Da Armandino . Ristorante Franchino serves up high quality seafood on a gorgeous terrace. Da Armandino is located in a unique location—right on the beach! Try their seafood risotto.

Where to park in Praiano

Most hotels and B&Bs have access to parking spots, so make sure you ask when you reserve your room. Asking your lodging about overnight parking is the best way to find secure spots.

positano italy travel packages

Day 2: Amalfi and Ravello

On day two you’ll drive about 30 minutes from Praiano to Amalfi. The cathedral of Amalfi is breathtaking from the outside, and it’s definitely worth paying the three euro entrance fee to visit the church and the complex inside. The town itself is small but full of tiny side streets for wandering and people watching.

Where to eat in Amalfi

For lunch, immerse yourself in nature at Agricola Fore Porta . It’s an organic farm that serves up a daily menu of the freshest ingredients. The walk there and back from the town of Amalfi is also lovely. Don’t want to leave the center of Amalfi? Head to La Bottega dei Ferrari for a custom panino ( P.za dei Dogi, 24 ). Or for a sit-down meal, Taverna degli Apostoli ( Via Sant’Anna Piccola, 5 ) makes mouth watering fresh pasta. Expect high prices for the central location in Amalfi, though.

Where to park in Amalfi

One of the cheapest rates in Amalfi is Luna Rossa ( Via Pantaleone Comite, 35 ). Most parking lots charge around 4-6 euro per hour. If they try to charge you more, go to the next place!

positano italy travel packages

After lunch, drive up to Ravello (about 15 minutes) for the afternoon and sunset. The town nestled in the hills has one of the most picturesque central piazzas on the coast. It’s also home to several villas that you can visit. We recommend going to the gardens of Villa Cimbrione , especially in the springtime. It has a must-see terrace called Terrazzo dell’Infinito. Catch the sunset there, if you can! Because of high prices, we recommend looking for lodging in the downhill town of Minori.

Where to eat in Ravello

Ravello is unfortunately full of tourist traps. There is a wonderful gelato place, though: visit Baffone Gelato ( Via Roma, 48 ) for an afternoon pick-me-up. We recommend getting dinner directly in Minori at the very cute restaurant Giardinello ( C.so Vittorio Emanuele, 17 ).

Where to park in Ravello

The Oscar Niemeyer Auditorium and the Duomo car park are the best parking options in Ravello, and charge 2-3 euro per hour.

Day 3: Minori, Maiori, and Vietri sul Mare

The towns of Minori and Maiori are connected by a scenic walking path, called the Path of the Lemons. After exploring the town of Minori in the morning, we recommend hiking this beautiful path, which takes 1-2 hours and has some charming places to stop along the way, offering lemonade and refreshments. The path is well marked and paved, but beware: there are over 400 stairs. You can eat lunch along the path or in Maiori.

positano italy travel packages

Maiori is like a larger version of Minori—a charming and lively little coastal town, much less touristy than Positano and Amalfi. Take the main road to return to Minori from Maiori. It’s only a 15 minute walk.

Where to park in Minori

Via Pioppi is where you’re most likely to find street parking. If you don’t find it there, try the garage Parcheggio Pioppi ( Via Pioppi, 8 ). When in doubt, always ask your place of lodging for tips.

Where to eat in Minori and Maiori

For breakfast, dessert, or a snack any time of the day, you can’t miss Pasticceria Sal di Riso . It’s by far the best and most well-known pastry shop on the coast. Many of their sweets feature flavorful lemons from the surrounding areas.

On the Path of the Lemons, you’ll find Cuonc Cuonc (Via torre s.n.c), a small farm with a terrace restaurant serving hyper-local plates.

In Maiori, the best place for a budget lunch is Antica Salumeria del Corso ( Corso Reginna, 71) .

In the afternoon make the 35-minute drive to Vietri sul Mare, a town famous for its artisanal ceramics. This is the best place on this itinerary to pick up souvenirs!

Wandering around the town, you’ll see ceramic tiles covering many of the walls and surfaces. The town itself is like a living piece of ceramic art. Around sunset, head to a lookout point at Corso Umberto 14 for a peaceful view in a small piazza.

positano italy travel packages

Where to park in Vietri sul Mare

Piazza Matteotti ( Corso Umberto Iᵒ ) has public parking, but it’s quite a small lot. You may be able to find street parking around that area, though.

Where to eat in Vietri sul Mare

Il Principe e La Civetta is a restaurant that’ll finish off your trip on a high note. For a treat, try their fish carpaccio, served on a block of himalayan pink salt with fresh fruit.

££ | Group size maximum of 25

This is your chance to see one of Italy’s less-visited spots: Puglia , deep in the south of the country. This pretty region has been coveted by rulers throughout history and has a fascinating range of cultural influences, from Spanish castles to Norman churches and Romanesque cathedrals. See the best of them on this seven-day holiday, during which you’ll soak up plenty of culture with escorted tours of Lecce’s medieval streets and the Unesco-listed troglodyte cave dwellings at Matera. There’s also time to stroll around the town of Alberobello, with its intriguing cone-roofed huts, and stop at the pilgrimage site of Monte Sant’Angelo; tucking into top-quality food — and wine comes as a given. The price includes flights, four-star accommodation and some meals. There are multiple departures between August and October.

3. Florence and Tuscany tour, Riviera Travel

Tuscany is Italy’s heart-throb region, and this tour takes in some of its most soul-stirring spots — as well as smaller, more rustic corners. Start in Florence , with its fabulous cathedral and Uffizi gallery, holding masterpieces by Michelangelo, Raphael and many more. Next, it’s squinting at the Leaning Tower of Pisa before moving to Siena, whose central square hosts world-renowned horse races, and swinging by San Gimignano, a gorgeous medieval village. String all this together with some classic Italian dishes and you’re sure to have a hard-to-forget holiday. Prices for this eight-day tour include return flights, some meals and all excursions and tours.

This is classic territory that appeared on the itinerary of those young aristocrats taking the Grand Tour in the 18th century — and it’s still as captivating today. You’ll be based in a luxury hotel on the shore of Lake Como, the perfect spot for boat trips to lakeside towns such as Bellagio. Daily excursions will whisk you to sophisticated St Moritz, the Bergamo, Lake Maggiore, and to unforgettable landscapes along the Bernina Express railway route. The price includes flights, four-star accommodation, and breakfast and dinner daily.

6. Rome, Ninfa and Castel Gandolfo, Brightwater Holidays

The Gardens of Ninfa (Getty Images)

Just south of Rome, the medieval ruins at Ninfa are festooned with curtains of flowers and allow for wonderfully scented walks beside the river. Castel Gandolfo, whose gardens Pope Francis has declared should be open to the public, is a sight you’ll want to snap a photo or three at — particularly the Giardino del Belvedere, with its cypresses and umbrella pines. The itinerary also features 16th-century Villa Lante and Villa D’Este, the walled town of Viterbo, and a tour of Rome itself, including highlights such as the Colosseum, St Peter’s Square and the Trevi Fountain. But it well rewards a visit, with Renaissance palaces, fascinating museums and some evocative, historic restaurants. This six-night tour with cultural specialists Kirker Holidays — led by an Oxford scholar with a passion for the region’s history, art and music — takes in not only the city itself but the Piedmontese countryside beyond, sitting in the shadow of the Alps. Start with a guided tour of its historic centre — and a wine tasting at a local vineyard — before striking out along the Prosecco Road, which was Italy’s very first wine road. Other highlights include time spent exploring the romantic squares and alleys of Treviso, enjoying lip-smacking views from the ancient town of Asolo, and visiting the 16th-century watermill of Molinetto della Croda. On the itinerary is the medieval town of Monte Sant’Angelo, its terraces dotted with asphodels and rockrose. After that it’s off to Peschici, a traditional fishing village that’s a great base for discovering the botany of the peninsula’s north coast. Two wheels aside, you’ll also hike Monte Baldo in the Italian Alps and re-energise with lunch at a mountain hut restaurant and trek through pungent vineyards, followed by the chance to toast the day and taste the wine itself. Happily, between the excursions, you’ll have time to laze by the lake and stroll around the local towns. The price of this five-day tour includes hotel accommodation, some meals, excursions and the services of a local guide, but not flights.
