Visit an incarcerated person

Service overview.

Incarcerated people can receive visitors in prison for one hour each week. Walk-ins are not permitted. You must schedule your visit at least 48 hours in advance.

If you are visiting an incarcerated person, you can bring an outfit for them to attend court in .

Philadelphia prison facilities are operated by the Philadelphia Department of Prisons (PDP) .

Who can visit an incarcerated person

Friends and family members can visit incarcerated people.

Children that are six months and older can visit with a parent or guardian. The adult must provide proof of custody or a birth certificate. Children cannot visit during school hours.

No more than one adult and one child can visit with a person at one time.

Who can’t visit an incarcerated person

You cannot visit someone in jail or prison at a PDP facility if you:

• Are on probation, parole, or conditional release including furlough and work release.
• Were incarcerated in any Philadelphia Department of Prisons facility in the last six months.
• Are believed to have a potential detrimental effect on the person you are visiting, or pose a security threat to the facility.
• Have had your visiting privileges suspended.

If you have been denied a visit because of one of the reasons above, you can request special permission from the facility’s warden.

Requirements

Visitors must follow a dress code. You may not wear:

• Plain white t-shirts.
• Clothing that closely resembles an incarcerated person’s uniform (orange jumpsuits, blue scrub tops).
• Hoodies or jackets with hoods.
• Hot pants or short-shorts. (Bermuda shorts are permissible.)
• Torn jeans.
• Revealing clothing or see-through fabric anywhere on the torso.
• Mini-skirts or dresses (must be within two inches of the knee).
• Low-rise pants or skirts that reveal undergarments.
• Clothing with offensive or provocative language.
• Clothing with writing across the seat of pants or skirt.
• Open-toe shoes.

Visitors must wear:

• Shirts with sleeves.

If you’re wearing leggings or stretch pants, your top must cover your hips when you raise your arms above your head.

Where and when

Appointments for visits are first-come, first-served. You must make your appointment between 48 hours and seven days in advance.

Saturday visits are reserved for designated facility populations. Holiday visits are only allowed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.

Visitors must be at the facility at least ten minutes before the scheduled visit.

Friends and family members can collect personal effects from the cashier during the hours listed below. The cashier’s office is open 24 hours a day at release.

Visiting hours by facility

* To visit an incarcerated person at the Detention Center (DC), Alternative & Special Detention Center (ASD), or ASD MOD III, go to the Riverside Correctional Facility (RCF) visiting lobby.

In the visiting area, you can store your belongings in a locker. You must have quarters for the lockers. There is no change machine in the waiting room.

They may ask you to loosen undergarments to perform the search. You also need to go through a metal detector.

If you feel that a search was improper, ask to speak to a supervisor or contact the Office of Community Justice Outreach (CJO) at (215) 685-8909 or (215) 685-7288 .

If the person you are visiting doesn’t want to see you, you will not be allowed to visit them. The PDP will not force anyone to meet a visitor if they don’t want to.

Make sure your visit will be a success by carefully following these four steps.

Discover or confirm the whereabouts of the inmate you would like to visit.

Before you can visit you must be placed on the inmate's approved visiting list.

Review all visiting rules, regulations, and procedures before your visit.

Find out when you can visit and get directions to the facility.

Locate the inmate

Sometimes an inmate may be moved to a different facility so that they can benefit from unique programs offered at that location. They might also be moved to receive treatment for a medical condition or for security concerns. Therefore, the first step in planning your visit should be to determine where the inmate is currently housed.

To visit, you must be pre-approved.

You can only visit an inmate if they have placed you on their visiting list and you have been cleared by the BOP.

• An inmate is given a Visitor Information Form when he/she arrives at a new facility.
• Inmate completes their portion of the form and mails a copy to each potential visitor.
• Potential visitor completes all remaining form fields.
• Potential visitor sends the completed form back to the inmate's address (listed on the form).
• We may request more background information and possibly contact other law enforcement agencies or the NCIC
• The inmate is told when a person is not approved to visit and it is the inmate's responsibility to notify that person.

Who can an inmate add to their visiting list?

• Step-parent(s)
• Foster parent(s)
• Grandparents
• No more than 10 friends/associates
• Foreign officials
• Members of religious groups including clergy
• Members of civic groups
• Employers (former or prospective)
• Parole advisors

In certain circumstances such as when an inmate first enters prison or is transferred to a new prison, a visiting list might not exist yet. In this case, immediate family members who can be verified by the information contained in the inmate's Pre-Sentence Report, may be allowed to visit. However, if there is little or no information available about a person, visiting may be denied. You should always call the prison ahead of time to ensure your visit will be permitted.

Be Prepared

You should be familiar with all visiting rules, regulations, and procedures before your visit.

The following clothing items are generally not permitted but please consult the visiting policy for the specific facility as to what attire and items are permitted in the visiting room:

• revealing shorts
• halter tops
• bathing suits
• see-through garments of any type
• low-cut blouses or dresses
• backless tops
• hats or caps
• sleeveless garments
• skirts two inches or more above the knee
• dresses or skirts with a high-cut split in the back, front, or side
• clothing that looks like inmate clothing (khaki or green military-type clothing)

How to Book a Prison Visit Online

Scheduling an in-person visit with an incarcerated loved one is important for maintaining connections. Many corrections departments now allow online prison visit reservations to improve convenience and efficiency. This article outlines the typical process for booking online prison visits.

Check Visitation Eligibility Requirements

Before scheduling visits, confirm eligibility with the facility’s policies:

Most prisons with online scheduling require creating a visitor account:

• Enter your personal details like name, address, email, phone number.
• Create a username and password for the visitor account.

• Electronically sign any waivers or terms required.

This information links you to the inmate and confirms identity upon arrival.

Schedule Visit Date and Time

With an approved visitor account, you can view visitation calendars and schedule dates/times:

• Select day(s) – Weekends and holidays are busiest.
• Choose time slot(s) – Typical windows are 1-2 hours long.
• Check-in 15-30 minutes prior – To clear security screening.
• Bring printed or digital confirmation – Shows your scheduled slot.

Visits are usually first-come, first-served for available times. Book well in advance for best selection.

Understand Cancellation and No Show Policies

Review policies if you must cancel or miss scheduled visits:

• Timeframe – Cancel at least 24-48 hours in advance when possible.
• Allowed frequency – Too many cancellations or no shows may restrict future visits.
• Notifications – Call the visitation hotline as soon as possible.

Usually not – facilities limit visits to 1-2 hour sessions with buffer times in between.

Is there an age limit or requirement for minor visitor approval?

Yes, approval rules vary but most prisons prohibit visitors under 18 years old.

Can online visit reservations be made on a mobile device?

Some systems only allow scheduling on the desktop website. But mobile-friendly platforms are becoming more common.

You can search for prisoners and prison records based on when and where someone was incarcerated. Find out how to look up federal, state, or local prison records.

Look up state and local prison records

Recent federal prison records (1982 - present), locate or learn about an inmate.

Use the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) inmate locator  to find out when a prisoner is or was expected to be released.

Get a copy of your own prison records

If you are looking for your own prison records, complete and submit Form DOJ-361  along with a FOIA request . This form helps BOP confirm your identity so your private prison records are not wrongfully disclosed.

Federal prison records 1870 - 1981

Find prisoner records prior to 1982 from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). To learn more about finding BOP records, contact NARA .

NARA also has indexes of inmates once held at Alcatraz, Leavenworth, and other federal prisons . Search by name for former inmates at each location to see if they served time there. 

You may be able to order copies of prisoners' records through NARA if they are available. Include the following information about the inmate in your request:

• Name (including middle name or initial)
• Date of birth or approximate age at the time of incarceration
• Approximate dates in prison

Three Types of Video Visits

At Facility

These visits are when you go to your facility and sit at a video visit station in the lobby. Your loved one or friend will be on a video visit station in their pod.

From Computer

At select facilities families and friends can have video visits from their own personal computers in the comfort of their own homes. You will need the following equipment to do a video visit from home:

• A computer.
• A webcam and a microphone, or a computer with these components built in (most laptops have these built in).
• An internet browser. Internet browsers Safari 4 and higher, or Firefox 7 and higher, are strongly recommended. Using other browsers may not load the page appropriately in order to begin your visit. We are not responsible for technical problems or issues that may arise from using an unsupported browser.
• For the best visit experience you should use headphones, but they are not required.
• High speed internet (DSL or Cable) connection (dial up and satellite are not supported).

From Android Device

Video visits go mobile with our Visit Now Android app. At select facilities families and friends can have video visits from their own Android devices.

How to Schedule a Visit

Free video visit policy.

Free visits are a benefit for the inmate and are credited to the  inmate’s account. Therefore the inmate is the only one who  can book a free visit . This allows the inmate at your facility full control of whom they want to use their free visit with. There are also advanced scheduling rules that control the timeframe that a free visit can be booked. These rules vary by facility. If an inmate books a visit outside this timeframe, they will not be allowed to use a free visit.

• Book the visit with their Friends & Family.
• Suggest a visit with their Friends & Family. The Friends & Family must have no prepaid funds on their account at the time they confirm the suggested time. The inmate’s free visit will then be deducted.
• Confirm a suggested visit from their friends and family. The Friends & Family must have no prepaid funds on their account at the time the inmate confirms the visit. The inmate’s free visit will then be deducted from their free visit allowance.

The only way Friends & Family can use a free visit is by suggesting a visit with the inmate. If the inmate has a free visit available and there are no prepaid funds on the Friends & Family account at the time the inmate confirms, the free visit will be deducted from inmate’s account.

Book a visit to prison

You will need to book a visit if you want to see someone in prison. You can book online to arrange an in person visit or a virtual visit with a prisoner or you can telephone the prison Visits Booking Office.

If you haven't visited a prison before you will need to phone to book your visit. You will be provided with your unique visitor identification number. Once  you have this you can start to book online.

Booking online

To book online for an in person visit or a virtual visit you will need:  

• to have previously booked a visit
• the visit reference number for the prisoner
• the prisoner's number
• your unique visitor identification number
• your date of birth
• your e-mail address and contact number
• the unique visitor identification number and dates of birth for all additional visitors (not needed for a virtual visit)

If you do not have these details, you should phone the relevant booking office.

Booking by telephone

To book a visit by telephone you will need:

• the visit reference number for the prisoner 
• the unique visitor identification number and dates of birth for all additional visitors

If you don't have a unique visitor identification number, you can get one from the booking office which you can use for future visits.

If the person you are visiting has just arrived in prison you will need to ring the booking office and they can arrange a visit.

Virtual visits

A virtual visit can last up to 20 minutes. The visitor can use a personal computer, mobile device or smartphone to have this meeting with the prisoner.

All virtual visits are supervised, if NIPS become aware of any behaviour, language or actions which are considered inappropriate, this will result in the visit ending early and possible removal of the facility in the future.

Registering for visits

All visitors need to be registered in the prison they are visiting. When you arrive at Visits Reception you need to be photographed, have a scan taken of your finger and you should bring identification.

FAMILY LIAISON SERVICE SPECIALIST

CDCR provides through a contract with a community-based organization an on-site Case Manager as a family reunification liaison for inmates and family members, to assist with an inmates pre-release preparation; and conduct Parenting and Creative Conflict Resolution classes for inmates. Once known as the “Rose Capital of the World”, Wasco is still home to a booming agricultural community. Wasco is a small city with approximately 25,000 residents. Located in Kern County, Wasco is one of the most affordable areas in the state. Bakersfield is the nearest big city, about a half hour’s drive. A short two hour drive will take you to the Pacific Ocean beaches, the giant redwoods in the Sequoia Mountains, Paso Robles Wine Country, and America’s second largest city, Los Angeles.

A 1,000-bed medium custody facility houses general population inmates to help support and maintain the 4,580-bed reception center.  A minimum custody facility provides institutional maintenance and landscaping services.

Heather Shirley was appointed Warden at Wasco State Prison-Reception Center (WSP-RC) in June 2022. She had served as acting warden since November 2020.

She began her career with CDCR in July 2000 and reported as a correctional officer to California Medical Facility in September 2000. She subsequently was promoted to correctional sergeant and correctional lieutenant.

In July 2010 she promoted to correctional captain at California State Prison-Solano, where she also held the positions of facility captain, and associate warden. As an associate warden, she transferred to CDCR, Division of Adult Institutions, in June 2015 where she remained until her appointment to chief deputy warden at WSP-RC in October 2016.

David Hill began his career with CCHCS/CDCR at Wasco State Prison in 2009.  He has over 30 years of experience as a CEO in various hospitals and healthcare systems.  Mr. Hill has been a lobbyist for the American Hospital Association and the Healthcare Association of Hawaii.  He served on the Governor’s Advisory Panel for Healthcare and as Chairman of the Healthcare Association of Hawaii.  He has worked with the federal government’s Tri-Care Program and Program 177 Bikini Atoll Survivor’s Program in the Marshall Islands.  Mr. Hill assisted the government of Malaysia in building a network of private hospitals throughout the country and was associated with the Aga Khan Foundation.  He maintains a private consulting firm with clients in Japan, South Korea and Thailand as well as in the United States.

Local  Inmate Family Councils (IFC’s)  are a gathering of family and friends of the incarcerated who meet regularly with Wardens to support visiting since keeping strong family connections with loved ones is a powerful rehabilitative tool. These IFC’s promote visiting by clarifying rules and regulations as well as discussing health, education, vocational training, packages, books, and related issues. You can now book a prison visit online

Booking a prison visit should be simple and straightforward. Until now that was far from the case. Booking a visit required both prisoner and visitor to jump through hoops: paper forms and drawn-out phone calls. And if the visit date turned out to be impossible, they had to start all over again.

Now you can book a visit online . It takes about 5 minutes. Before, picking an available date was pot luck. Now there's a date-picker that lets you select 3 possible slots instead of 1. It’s a straight-forward service with user-needs at its heart but, if you get stuck, you can call the prison's visits booking line and someone will help you with the booking.

By making it easier to book visits, prisoners will see more of their friends and family. Evidence suggests this will help their rehabilitation. Transformation isn't just about websites.

The service was built by the Ministry of Justice, with a combined team from the National Offender Management Service, HM Prison Service and MoJ Digital Services.

Hi my partner was sent to nottingham today, I was on his previous list 4 months ago for a visit. Will that still be on the system all will it have to he put through again if so how long does it take to be approved for a visit? Thanks Paige.

According to the information on this page: https://www.gov.uk/prison-visits , you can arrange a visit to any prison in England and Wales through this service. If you're visiting someone in Northern Ireland or Scotland you'll need to contact the prison directly.

The Visiting Order (VO) number is generated by the booking system, it is included in your confirmation email and you will need this to change or cancel a booking.

However, if you're visiting a prison the guidance is that you only need your ID, not the VO number. If when you visit the prison you are asked for the VO number you should report this via the Contact Us link on the Prison Visits Booking form.

Hi Ilysa. Thanks for your question. A visit needs to be booked 3 working days in advance. So in this case, the visit request would have to be no later than Tuesday to allow for a visit on Sunday.

How do I find out if someone has been arrested and booked into the Latah County Jail?

To find out if someone you know has been recently arrested and booked into the Latah County Jail, call the jail’s booking line at 208-882-2216 .

There may be an automated method of looking them up by their name over the phone, or you may be directed to speak to someone at the jail. Sometimes the jail staff may ask you the offender’s date of birth to ensure privacy of the offender’s status.

Keep in mind that after an arrest, the information on an offender may not be publicly available for several hours.

What happens during booking in Latah County?

After being arrested and taken into custody, and after being read their Miranda Rights, an offender will next be transported to the local police or department or the Sheriff’s Department in Latah County for booking.

Booking is very involved and requires multiple steps in the process, however, keep in mind that most attorneys will advise that an offender remain silent and not offer any additional information about the crime they have been arrested for because anything they do say may be recorded and may very well be used against them in court.

What is the booking process like at the Latah County Jail?

Booking includes having their photo (mugshot) and fingerprints taken, as well as being asked a lot of questions about their personal history and state of mind. If it’s a serious felony, their DNA may also be taken. They will also be checked for warrants in Latah County and other Idaho and USA jurisdictions.

If the offender was arrested for a DUI offense, and has refused a breathalyzer test, they may also be forced to have blood drawn by a doctor or nurse.

It is also very likely that the offender will undergo a humiliating full body search while in the nude. This includes bending over, spreading their cheeks in the direction of an officer, and coughing. They will also be walked through a metal detector or x-ray machine, like those used at an airport.

What kind of questions are asked during booking?

The arresting jurisdiction will ask about gang affiliations, tattoos, medical conditions, prescribed medication they are taking, recreational drugs they are on or addicted to, allergies, if they are suicidal, and other relevant information that will help with determining their cell assignment and special needs.

What happens to an offender’s personal property during booking?

During the arrest and booking process an offender will also have all their personal property confiscated and held for either their release from jail, or with the offender’s approval, released to a friend or family member.

Personal property includes the clothing they are wearing, money, wallets, purses, cell phones, jewelry, body rings, earrings, watches, and even glasses if they are deemed a security risk. If they are allowed to keep their shoes or sneakers, the laces are removed.

What happens after booking?

At this point the offender will be allowed to make a free phone call to a person of their choice to notify them of their arrest, and/or arrange a bond or bail for their release.

If the offender is being detained and housed while awaiting arraignment, the Latah County Jail will provide a jail garment and slip-on shoes, a blanket, sheets, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a towel.

Often, before they are dressed in the jail outfit and brought to their housing location, they will be forced to take a shower and undergo a disinfectant treatment for body and hair lice, scabies or other pests that may be residing on their person.

How long does the Latah County Jail Booking process take?

Booking can take anywhere from an hour to 24 hours or more. It all depends on the number of people that are awaiting processing, the number of staff on duty at the time, and the behavior of the offender.

If the offender is heavily intoxicated and/or violent, the Booking Officer may decide to stick the offender in a holding cell for several hours until they become more manageable.

Latah County, Idaho

The Latah County Jail is an adult male and female holding facility that was built in 1972. The jail is designed to hold adults being charged with a crime while awaiting trial, and those adults sentenced to local jail time or awaiting transport to the Idaho Department of Corrections. We also hold for other forms of due process. We house adult prisoners for the Idaho State Police, Moscow Police Department, United States Marshals Service, Bureau of Prisons, Idaho Department of Corrections, other various counties and our own agency. The jail has a maximum holding capacity of 42 individuals. The jail is staffed by 1 Lieutenant, 1 Sergeant, 2 Corporals and 8 Deputies working 2 different shifts. The jail admits new bookings and releases inmates twenty four hours a day. The Jail Staff dispenses medication, feeds inmates, delivers and receives individuals from court and transports inmates to different agencies. They also provide housed inmates access to the library, recreation yard, attorneys, clergy, and special programs. Security checks, as well as inmates needing work/ school / treatment release are also done throughout the entire day. The jail's library consists of reading books, a Pull up Bar and Dip Bar. We also have an outside recreation yard. Both the library and recreation yard are constantly monitored. Inmates are allowed one hour per day in either location or a combination of both. The library contains a complete set of Idaho Code books and Federal Code books for legal research. The jail offers special programs to inmates to include Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, church services and a G.E.D program. Visiting is by APPOINTMENT ONLY. Visiting hours are Saturday and Sunday 1pm to 4pm. Adults must bring picture ID to visit an inmate. Juveniles must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. All visits are in special visiting room and are non-contact. Visitors must be 18 years of age or accompanied by their parent or legal guardian, and must not have been incarcerated within the last 30 days. If you are on probation you must have prior approval through your probation officer. Everyone visiting must have a valid picture ID. Medical Staff come into the jail twice a week for inmate sick call and they handle the majority of the cases. Those cases that require a specialists such as Dental, Eye Exams Lab Work, x-ray’s or any other procedure that cannot be done in the facility are brought to a local Provider in the area.

The Process

When visiting a Prison, you will be required to pass the security screening process which will include some or all of the following:

• X Ray machine
• Walk through metal detector
• Narcotic / explosive swab detection
• Canine screening
• Pat down search

Should you fail any part of the screening process, a pat down search will then be conducted. Prior to commencing a pat down search, the officer will activate their body worn camera, to record visual and audio footage at that time.

Please note the onus is on the visitor to pass all aspects of the screening process.

Should staff feel it necessary at any point during the screening process, they will also activate the body worn camera for incidents such as threatening and abusive behavior

In order to assist with the screening process:

• Please do not bring any personal belongings or items with you (place all such items in the lockers provided in the waiting room)
• You should only have your photo I.D and locker key on your person when proceeding to the screening area
• Be mindful of the clothing you wear. Clothing with high volume of metal is likely to activate the walk through metal detector & this may lead to restrictions on the type of visit offered or even cancellation of a visit
• Please familiarise yourself with the information and instructional video available on the screen in the waiting room prior to entering the prison.

Prisoner Property

All private/personal property delivered to the prison on behalf of individual prisoners is done so entirely at the prisoner’s own risk. Neither the Governor nor the Irish Prison Service will accept liability for any such property lost, damaged or stolen whilst in transit, in delivery in storage, or in the possession of the prisoner. The Irish Prison Service can accept prisoner property at prison entrances, during family visits to the prison or by post.

The following table outlines a list of authorised items that can be delivered to a prison on behalf of individual prisoners:

The following items are prohibited and will not be accepted by the Irish Prison Service:

• Any clothing that resemble staff uniform items
• No hooded tops
• No steel toe-cap footwear
• Limited belt buckle size
• No ties, braces, sunglasses, hats, caps.
• No clothing with offensive logos (sexist, racial. drug, gang related) etc.
• Large rings
• Long or heavy neck chains
• Only one musical instrument is permitted per prisoner
• Toiletries – can be purchased via prison tuck shop
• No radios – in cell radios are in place
• Reading materials – these are provided by the library service in the prison

It is important to note that all items of private/personal property are subject to Governors permission. Different prisons have differing policies in relation to items a prisoner can have in their cell. This is a matter decided by the Governor of each prison taking into account the security environment in each prison. All items received into the prison will be subject to the necessary security screening.

To visit someone in Norwich you must:

• be on that person’s visitor list
• book your visit in advance
• have the required ID with you when you go

At least one visitor must be 18 or older at every visit. Prisoners can have fup to 3 visitors over the age of 10 at one time, plus any younger children.

There may be a limit to the number of visits a prisoner can have. You can check this with Norwich prison.

Getting to Norwich

Find Norwich on a map

HMP Norwich is situated on the eastern outskirts of Norwich, in Norfolk.

Bus numbers 23 or 24 from City Centre or the train Station go past HMP Norwich. Ask for Knox Road (or simply ask for the prison).

Take a train to Norwich Station (London services are via Liverpool Street). From Norwich Station it takes approximately 20 minutes to walk to the prison. At the main junction outside the station follow Riverside Road (Keep River on your left). At the roundabout turn right up Ketts Hill onto Plumstead Road. Please note the prison is located at the top of a steep hill. Turn left into Barrack Road. The prison and Visitors’ Centre are situated at the end of the road. No special transport is provided. Buses and taxis can be taken to the prison.

From A11: Join A47 (Southern bypass around Norwich) and follow signs for Great Yarmouth. Take the slip road signposted A1042 (Norwich N & E & Thorpe St. Andrew). Go straight over the roundabout and under Railway Bridge. At mini roundabout turn right. Take left-hand slip road by traffic lights (Sainsbury’s should be on your right-hand side) signposted Cromer, Norwich Airport (A140). Follow road up hill to roundabout. Take the second exit, Plumstead Road (B1140), signpost “HM Prison”. Turn right into Barrack Road. HMP YOI Norwich, and the Visitors’ Centre, is situated at the end of the road Parking Limited parking is available on site. Information and leaflets on all the above services can be obtained from the visitors’ centre.

Parking is limited however car parking is free.

Entering Norwich

All visitors, aged 16 or older must prove their identity before entering the prison. Read the list of acceptable forms of ID when visiting a prison .

Incorrect identification could result in refused entry.

All visitors will be given a rub-down search, including children. You will also be searched by security dogs.

Visitors must adhere to the prison dress code that applies. Coats and hoodies may be worn however they must search via the x-ray machine prior to entry. We are aware that it is quite fashionable to wear two layers of trousers however during your visit could we ask that one layer is removed. Ripped jeans will also be permitted. Shorts can be worn however we request that hot pant length shorts are not worn. Miniskirts/dresses may be worn but only if worn with tights or leggings. In addition to this no revealing clothing is allowed.

Please be aware that if you are assessed as being inappropriately dressed the duty manager will be requested to attend and they will decide regarding your entry for your visit.

There will be a small selection refreshments available to purchase on your arrival at the visits centre.

There are strict controls on what you can take into Norwich prison. You will have to leave most of the things you have with you in a locker or at the visits centre, this includes pushchairs and car seats. You will need a £1 coin for the lockers, which is refundable.

You will have the visit rules explained to you by an officer at the start of your visit. If you fail to adherer to these rules, your visit may be terminated, and you could face being banned from future visits.

Visiting facilities

There is a visitors centre at Norwich. serves hot and cold drinks and has a small children’s play area.

Family days

Family Days are an opportunity for families and children to spend and extended period together engaging in play activities and sharing lunch together; 4 Family Days are expected to take place each year split between the Cat C unit and the Main side of the prison. It is expected that up to 12 fathers can take part on each day.

Children’s visits

Children’s Visits are special visits for children to visit their dad/stepdad or granddad so that the family can spend time together in a relaxed setting. These visits can also be for new dads (‘Baby Bonding’ visits) so that they can bond with their new baby soon after birth.

Transition Children’s Visits

Transition Children’s Visits (otherwise known as Brit House Dad’s Visits) for fathers currently residing in the open-conditions part of HMP/YOI Norwich, Britannia House, to spend time with their children at the Play Space in the Visitors Centre, building the families confidence in dad’s capabilities as a parent and preparing the dads for their release.

Phone calls

Prisoners have phones in their cells to be able to maintain contact with friends and family. They have to buy phone credits to do this.

They can phone anyone named on their list of friends and family. This list is checked by security when they first arrive so it may take a few days before they are able to call.

You can also exchange voicemails using the Prison Voicemail service .

Officers may listen to phone calls as a way of preventing crime and public protection.

You can send emails to someone in Norwich using the Email a Prisoner service .

You might also be able to attach photos and receive replies from the prisoner, depending on the rules at Norwich.

You can write at any time.

Include the person’s name and prisoner number on the envelope.

All post apart from legal letters will be opened and checked by officers.

Send money and gifts

You can use the free and fast online service to send money to someone in prison .

You can no longer send money by bank transfer, cheque, postal order or send cash by post.

If you cannot use the online service, you may be able to apply for an exemption - for example if you:

• are unable to use a computer, a smart phone or the internet
• do not have a debit card

This will allow you to send money by post.

Gifts and parcels

People in Norwich are given a list of approved items that can be sent to them as gifts. Contact Norwich for more information on what’s allowed.

Family and friends of prisoners are permitted to send books directly to their loved ones, or can order books from approved retailers, which can source and send the books on to prisoners.   For the full list of approved retailers, you can read the HMPPS Incentives Policy, Annex F .

Make sure to include the person’s name and prisoner number on the parcel.

All parcels will be opened and checked by officers.

Life at Norwich

Norwich is committed to providing a safe and educational environment where prisoners can learn new skills to help them on release.

Security and safeguarding

Every prisoner at Norwich has a right to feel safe. The staff are responsible for their safeguarding and welfare at all times.

Arrival and first night

When a prisoner first arrives at Norwich, they will be able to contact a family member by phone. This could be quite late in the evening, depending on the time they arrive.

They will get to speak to someone who will check how they’re feeling and ask about any immediate health and wellbeing needs.

Each person who arrives at Norwich gets an induction that lasts about a week. They will meet professionals who will help them with:

• health and wellbeing, including mental and sexual health
• any substance misuse issues, including drugs and alcohol
• personal development in custody and on release, including skills, education and training
• other support (sometimes called ‘interventions’), such as managing difficult emotions

Everyone will also be made aware of rules, fire safety, and the day to day regime at HMP Norwich.

Accommodation

Around 750 prisoners live at Norwich Prison, mostly in single cells with some shared accommodation.

There are 10 wings and a special care unit:

• A - induction unit, first night centre, drug treatment stabilisation and maintenance unit
• B and C - for those on remand and trial plus vulnerable prisoners
• D - resettlement unit (also known as Britannia House)
• E - older prisoners unit
• F and G - local discharge unit for low-risk prisoners who are local to the area, serving 24 months or less
• H - healthcare unit
• L - elderly lifer unit
• M - low-risk prisoners serving 24 months or less
• U - special care and segregation unit (also known as the Kett’s unit)

There is a healthcare centre with 24-hour nursing cover.

Norwich has 3 gyms and an artificial multi-use sports area. There are various sports clubs available.

Prisoners have access to a wide range of faith and religious services.

Education is offered by teachers across the prison. Courses cover:

• work, life and social skills
• English for speakers of other languages
• food hygiene
• health and safety
• painting and decorating
• arts and crafts
• gym instruction
