The Best Photos of the Royal Family at the South Korean State Banquet

King Charles, Queen Camilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and more royals were in their finest at Buckingham Palace this evening.

The royal family were dressed to the nines in their finest tuxes, gowns, and tiaras this evening at Buckingham Palace to host a state banquet in honor of President Yoon Suk Yeol and First Lady Kim Keon-hee of South Korea.

King Charles and Queen Camilla were joined by many of the senior working members of the royal family, including Prince William , Catherine, Princess of Wales , Princess Anne , the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester , and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh . (Sophie's husband, Prince Edward , is currently in Australia for a three-day visit.) Earlier today, Charles, Camilla, William, and Kate were at the official ceremonial welcome at Horse Guards Parade .

It's just the second state visit hosted by King Charles during his reign—the first was last November, welcoming South Africa's president Cyril Ramaphosa . State visits kick off with a state banquet, "a very grand formal occasion held in the Buckingham Palace Ballroom. Around 150 guests are usually invited on the basis of their cultural, diplomatic or economic links to the country being hosted."

For the evening, both Kate and Camilla wore spectacular tiaras—the Princess of Wales was in the Strathmore Rose tiara , which hasn't been seen in public for nearly a century, and the Queen was in the Burmese Ruby Tiara . Here, see all the best photos of the royal family attending the state banquet in honor of the 2023 South Korea state visit:

Buckingham Palace officially announced this week that the President of South Korea will travel to Britain for a state visit this November. As we look forward to another state visit—and a glittering state banquet!—let’s look back at the previous two South Korean state visits to the United Kingdom.

Elizabeth wore a diamond brooch she’d had in her collection for decades for the welcome ceremony: the City of London Lily Brooch . She received the brooch as a gift when she was given the Freedom of the City of London on June 11, 1947.

On the evening of December 1, the Queen and the Duke hosted a state banquet for the presidential couple at Buckingham Palace.

The Queen wore a gold evening gown with the star and red sash of South Korea’s Grand Order of Mugunghwa, plus the royal family orders of her grandfather, King George V, and her grandfather, King George VI. President Roh wore the insignia of the Order of the Bath.

She echoed the red color of the order’s sash with her jewelry, wearing diamonds and rubies. She selected the Burmese Ruby Tiara , plus the ruby setting of her small diamond frame earrings , the Baring Ruby Necklace , the Dorset Bow Brooch , and the Cornwall Rose of York Bracelet .

Nine years later, another South Korean president made a state visit to London. President Park Geun-hye arrived at Buckingham Palace for an official welcome ceremony on November 5, 2013.

Both the president and the monarch wore sparkling brooches for the welcome ceremony. Queen Elizabeth II selected the Centenary Rose Brooch , which she had given to the late Queen Mother as a 100th birthday present in 2000.

For a state banquet that evening, President Park wore a gorgeous traditional hanbok with the insignia of the Order of the Bath, while the Queen wore a white evening gown with silver accessories and the insignia of South Korea’s Grand Order of Mugunghwa and her father’s and grandfather’s family orders.

The Queen also wore the baguette and brilliant bracelet given to her by her father, King George VI. And the most eye-catching part of her ensemble was, without a doubt, the central portion of the magnificent Cockade Brooch. The brooch, which is one of Queen Victoria’s Heirlooms of the Crown , was worn as the center of a three-part cloak clasp by Elizabeth’s great-grandmother, Queen Alexandra.

HMS Queen Elizabeth Conducts Combined Exercise with ROK Navy

HMS Queen Elizabeth Conducts Combined Exercise with ROK Navy

The republic of korea (rok) navy conducted a combined naval exercise with the royal navy of the united kingdom on august 30, in the east sea (sea of japan) near the korean peninsula..

Daehan Lee 31 Aug 2021

The UK carrier strike group of HMS Queen Elizabeth and the ROK amphibious ship Dokdo along with an Aegis destroyer and submarines participated into the exercise for the first time in the history of their bilateral relations, even though it is the third time that a UK aircraft carrier visits South Korea since last visits of light aircraft carriers, HMS Invincible in 1992 and HMS Illustrious in 1997.

The exercise focused on SAREX which was mainly about humanitarian search and rescue and maritime replenishment and supply at sea. The carrier strike group (CSG21) was comprised of 8 ships which are 2 destroyers, 2 frigates, 2 support ships and 1 submarine, including a ship from the US and Royal Netherlands Navies respectively.

Maritime interoperability at its finest as the @RoyalNavy and ROK navy operate side by side conducting critical maritime manoeuvres. Thank you to the ROK Navy for their enthusiastic support to the #CSG21 deployment. pic.twitter.com/JN5dYiHbcC — Commander UK Carrier Strike Group (@smrmoorhouse) August 31, 2021

During the SAREX, HMS Queen Elizabeth that carries 8 British F-35Bs and 10 American F-35Bs and helicopters demonstrated landings and take-offs. However, it was reported that the US and other countries did not join the ROK-UK exercise.

“The UK Carrier Strike Group 21 led by HMS Queen Elizabeth begins multi-dimensional exchanges with the ROK Navy in Korean territorial waters as of today. The CSG21 will closely cooperate with the Korean Navy to test interoperability and share exemplary models.” Statement by the embassy of the United Kingdom in Seoul

The ROK Navy seeks to possess a 30,000t light aircraft carrier, but it has faced criticism from the public regarding its capabilities. It was why the Korean Navy spared some time to take a tour  at the British carrier, since the Navy was unable to promote the necessity of its indigenous aircraft carrier by taking advantage of the CSG21’s visit to Korea because of COVID-19. A well-informed military source told the media that “Since the Navy plans to carry Vertical Landing and Take-off (VTOL) aircrafts on its CVX, this exercise will be a good opportunity for us to learn structure, automated systems of the British carrier and how F-35Bs are operated there.”

HMS Queen Elizabeth Conducts Combined Exercise with ROK Navy 2

Aside from the ROK’s obsession with CVX, there have been analyses that the UK dispatching its CSG21 intends to be integrated into the US-led anti-China circle as a key ally, bandwagoning to the US grand strategy in response to the  rise of the People’s Liberation Army – Navy (PLAN)’s influence in the Indo-Pacific and in order to show off influence that might diminish after Brexit. The North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted furiously by releasing a statement on its website saying, “It is no doubt that the UK’s attempt to find the cause of regional tensions from us is  provocative and contradictory in the sense that it is the UK sending warships to this far Asia-Pacific”. In response to this, the UK Ministry of Defence countered that “the UK is ready to work with friends and partners to strengthen the security and freedoms upon which we mutually depend”.

The UK came to kill two birds with one stone in terms of national interests. First of all, it can now publicly show the solidarity between allies such as the US, Japan, and South Korea through combined naval exercises targeting the Chinese PLAN that pursues maritime expansion towards the Pacific. Also, the UK used this opportunity to solidify its stance that favors the multilateral bond with liberal democratic states that share common values regardless of distance between Europe and Asia. The UK government even announced a new security policy last March that it will prioritize the Indo-Pacific region by cooperating with like-minded states to counteract against China’s provocations near the South and East China Seas.

Secondly, the UK can expect more cooperation and benefits in its defense industry, considering that the government and British companies promote their carriers’ combat system and air control capabilities to South Korea, which come from BAE Systems, while attempting to export relevant aircraft carrier technologies for the Korean CVX project.

The ROK Defense Minister Seo Wook and the UK Defence Minister Ben Wallace clarified in the bilateral talk that “The deployment of HMS Queen Elizabeth will be the largest sea and air forces maneuvering far from the UK in thirty years. HMS Tamar and HMS Spey will be deployed at all time after our aircraft carrier comes back to the UK.”

“Profound thanks to Commander UK CSG and all on HMS Queen Elizabeth for hosting superbly informative visit for key partners from South Korea’s National Assembly and ROK Navy (whose support has been top-class).” UK Ambassador to South Korea Simon Smith

The news follows the King and Queen's three-day state visit to France, rescheduled from the spring due to pension-related riots

  • Buckingham Palace announced that Yoon Suk Yeol, president of South Korea, will travel to the U.K. for a state visit in November.
  • Yoon previously met King Charles at Buckingham Palace in September 2022 on the eve of Queen Elizabeth's funeral.
  • King Charles and Queen Camilla made an outward state visit to France last week.

King Charles and Queen Camilla have a party to plan!

Early on Tuesday, Buckingham Palace announced that the King, 74, and Queen, 76, will welcome Yoon Suk Yeol, the president of South Korea, and his wife, First Lady Kim Keon Hee, to the U.K. for a state visit this fall. The date and further details are expected to be announced in due course.

“The President of the Republic of Korea, His Excellency Yoon Suk Yeol, accompanied by Mrs Kim Keon Hee, has accepted an invitation from His Majesty The King to pay a State Visit to the United Kingdom in November,” a statement said. “The King and Queen will host the State Visit at Buckingham Palace.”

King Charles and Yoon met at Buckingham Palace around this time last year. They connected at the reception for heads of state and official overseas guests held at the royal residence on the evening before Queen Elizabeth ’s state funeral. The history-making monarch died at age 96 on Sept. 8, 2022, and her funeral at Westminster Abbey and committal service at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle were held on Sept. 19. Like many visiting dignitaries, Yoon signed a book of condolence at Church House in London that day.

In October 2022, King Charles sent a message of condolence to the South Korean leader following the deadly crowd surge in Itaewon, which The New York Times reported killed over 150 people.

In his former royal role as the Prince of Wales (a title now held by his eldest son and heir, Prince William ), Charles attended the State Banquet at Buckingham Palace for Roh Moo-hyun, the former president of South Korea, and his wife, Mrs. Roh Moo-hyun, during a state visit hosted by Queen Elizabeth in 2004. Charles also traveled to the Republic of Korea with Princess Diana in 1992.

State visits are an important part of the British royal family’s diplomatic duties, organized to strengthen relationships with other nations around the world.

“Foreign Monarchs, Presidents or Prime Ministers are invited to visit The King on the advice of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office,” the royal family’s website explains. “The programme for outward State Visits can vary widely, but incoming Visits usually feature a few regular events.”

According to Royal.UK, visits typically begin with a ceremonial welcome from the King and other members of the royal family at Horse Guards Parade. Guests are then invited to inspect a Guard of Honour before moving to the palace in a carriage procession with military escort before a marquee event that evening — a state banquet!

Chris Jackson/Getty Images

The glittering dinners are held in the ballroom of Buckingham Palace and historically seem to stipulate a white-tie dress code, where tiaras are welcome. About 150 people are invited “on the basis of their cultural, diplomatic or economic links to the country being hosted,” Royal.UK says, and the monarch makes a speech and proposes a toast to the visiting Head of State, who does the same.

From there, state visits usually last a few days. The guest of honor will meet with the Prime Minister and other government heads, possibly attending another banquet hosted by the Lord Mayor and City of London Corporation to meet more local leaders of commerce and industry.

King Charles hosted the first state visit of his royal reign in November 2022, welcoming South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to the U.K. The visit included all the traditional trappings, from a formal welcome by Kate Middleton and Prince William to a Guard of Honour inspection and sparkling state banquet at Buckingham Palace, where Princess Kate and Queen Camilla wore tiaras for the first time of the new reign.

Due to the COVID pandemic, the state visit was the first hosted by the British royal family since then-U.S. President Donald Trump visited the U.K. in 2019 . A royal source confirmed that Ramaphosa’s three-day stay was on the calendar before Queen Elizabeth died "peacefully" on Sept. 8.

Aaron Chown - Pool /Getty Images

News of Yoon’s upcoming state visit comes just a few days after King Charles and Queen Camilla were fêted at a state banquet during their three-day state visit to France. Last Thursday, the King and Queen were guests of French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte , at the historic Palace of Versailles on the outskirts of Paris on the first night of their trip, which ran from Sept. 20 to Sept. 22. Versailles was a French Royal Palace for much of its history but is now a public museum.

Around 150 guests, including prominent figures from both Britain and France, attended the glittering occasion. In a warm and personal toast, King Charles recalled past visits to France made by his mother, Queen Elizabeth, and father, Prince Philip.

LUDOVIC MARIN/AFP via Getty

"My parents’ first official visit together was to France in 1948, shortly after their wedding," Charles said. "By all accounts, they made quite a splash, dancing till the early hours at the glamorous Chez Carrere in the Rue Pierre Charron, serenaded by Edith Piaf. I suspect it may have left an indelible impression on me, even six months before I was born. 'La Vie en Rose' is one of my favorite songs to this day!"

The brief tour, which also included stops at the Arc de Triomphe,  Rugby World Cup village, Notre Dame and an organic vineyard near Bordeaux, celebrated “Britain’s relationship with France, marking our shared histories, culture and values," King Charles' deputy private secretary Chris Fitzgerald said in a palace briefing .

The trip was originally planned for March, and postponed due to protests over changes in pensions for French workers. Fitzgerald said that the September program “remains very similar to that which was planned for March, meaning the themes of the visit are also, for the most part, unchanged."

Here’s every country Queen Elizabeth II visited in her 70-year reign

From Algeria to Zimbabwe, the Queen visited at least 117 different countries

Ed Cunningham

Queen Elizabeth II, who died earlier today , was probably the best-travelled monarch in history. In her 70 years as UK monarch, Her Maj apparently travelled to at least 117 different countries – and covered over a million miles, according to The Telegraph .

The Queen travelled for loads of reasons, from ceremonial openings to official state visits, but she got around so much primarily because she was head of state for the Commonwealth: a political association of countries that were largely conquered by Britain back when it was an imperial power. RECOMMENDED: How the world is paying tribute to Queen Elizabeth II

In fact, Elizabeth II wasn’t just the Queen of the United Kingdom: during her time on the throne, she reigned over a total of 32 sovereign countries. Having started her reign in the final years of the British Empire, she ruled over a number of former British colonies as they became independent sovereign states. Many, but not all, later cut ties with the monarchy and became republics.

Queen Elizabeth II reigned, at various points, over Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Ceylon (later Sri Lanka), Fiji, Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Kenya, Malawi, Malta, Mauritius, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Sierra Leone, the Solomon Islands, South Africa, Tanganyika (later Tanzania), Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Uganda and, of course, the UK . She was also proclaimed as queen by Rhodesia, the predecessor to Zimbabwe.

By the time of her death, she was still the queen of 15 countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and the UK. She was the Queen of Barbados until November 2021, when the Caribbean nation became a republic.

As you’d expect, the Queen visited all of these places – and plenty more – during her 70-year reign. Here is a full list of all the countries and states the Queen travelled to during her reign, and the dates when she visited.

Britain's Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier to visit Japan, S. Korea on maiden deployment

queen elizabeth visits korea

TOKYO (REUTERS) - Britain's HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier will lead a flotilla of Royal Navy ships through Asian waters on port visits to Japan and South Korea on its maiden deployment, the British embassy in Tokyo said on Monday (April 26).

The high-profile visits, aimed at bolstering security ties in East Asia, come amid tensions in the region as concern grows in Japan over any threat posed to neighbouring Taiwan by China.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and US President Joe Biden issued a joint statement this month addressing China's growing assertiveness and the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait following their first face-to-face meeting in Washington since both became leaders of their countries.

Including the Queen Elizabeth with 18 F-35B stealth fighters, two destroyers, two frigates and two support ships, the British carrier strike group will have to sail through the contested South China Sea, parts of which are claimed by China and South-east Asian countries, on its way to East Asia.

The ships will also stop in India and Singapore.

It will be joined by vessels from the United States and a frigate from the Netherlands, and will carry out exercises with forces from Japan, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, France, the UAE, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Turkey, Israel, India, Oman and South Korea, the British government said in a news release.

Other foreign ships currently in Asian waters include a French amphibious carrier and two US navy aircraft carriers, one of which, the USS Ronald Reagan, is based in Japan.

A close Washington ally, Japan hosts the biggest concentration of US military forces outside the United States, including warships, planes and thousands of marines.

The latest, and so far most conspicuous, visit to Japan by British forces follows earlier deployment of warships, jet fighters and troops for joint training exercises as London and Tokyo look to strengthen defence ties.

Royal Navy HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier to visit Japan and South Korea amid growing tension between China and Taiwan

The HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier will lead a flotilla of Royal Navy ships from the United Kingdom through Asian waters on port visits to Japan and South Korea on its maiden deployment, the UK embassy in Tokyo says.

Key points:

  • The aim of the visits will be to bolster security ties in East Asia
  • The announcement comes as tensions grow between China and Taiwan
  • World leaders have recently stressed the important of peace in the Taiwan Strait

The high-profile visits come as concerns grow in Japan over the threat posed by China to Taiwan.

China's military has becoming increasingly active in the Taiwan Straight, drawing criticism from many Western nations.

The latest visit to Japan by UK forces follows earlier deployments of warships, jet fighters and troops for joint training exercises as London and Tokyo strengthen defence ties.

The UK government said HMS Queen Elizabeth will carry out exercises with forces from Japan, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, France, the UAE, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Turkey, Israel, India, Oman and South Korea.

HMS Queen Elizabeth includes 18 F-35B stealth fighters, two destroyers, two frigates and two support ships.

The Royal Navy carrier strike group will have to sail through the contested South China Sea, parts of which are claimed by China and South-East Asian countries.

The ships will also stop in India and Singapore and will be joined by vessels from the United States and a frigate from the Netherlands.

Other foreign ships currently in Asian waters include a French amphibious carrier and two US navy aircraft carriers, one of which, the USS Ronald Reagan, is based in Japan.

Japan, a close ally with the United States, hosts the biggest concentration of US military forces outside the United States, including warships, planes and thousands of marines.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and US President Joe Biden issued a joint statement this month addressing China's growing assertiveness and the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan will defend itself 'to the very last day'

In February,  China's military said the United States was deliberately "creating tensions" and disrupting peace and stability after a US warship sailed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait, the first such mission under the Biden administration.

China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, has been angered by increased US support for the island including arms sales and sending warships through the Taiwan Strait

Earlier this month Taiwan's Foreign Minister said the island will defend itself "to the very last day" if attacked by China.

Joseph Wu's comments came as the Taiwanese minister in charge of the Coast Guard warned China its drones could be shot down if they strayed too close to Taiwanese territory.

The democratic self-governed island has complained of repeated military activities by Beijing in recent months, with China's air force making almost daily sorties into Taiwan's air defence identification zone.

Mr Wu said the United States was concerned about the risk of conflict.

"From my limited understanding of American decision-makers watching developments in this region, they clearly see the danger of the possibility of China launching an attack against Taiwan," he told reporters.

"We are willing to defend ourselves without any questions and we will fight the war if we need to fight the war.

"And if we need to defend ourselves to the very last day we will defend ourselves to the very last day."
